2023 Belmont Day Preview

I'm Mike Louis. This is the horse race in happy

hour. There it is.

I got to do one. I don't like usually get to do

that first time for everything. That's right.

I'm no longer a virgin. All right, so it is Belmont

weekend which you know, we can say the Belmont is and but you

know it's met my all weekend is J / weekend, it's poker weekend.

Well, Acorn, we got weekend. I mean, this is about that.

Louis just the same. Saturday.

Is it Blasphemous for me to say that this might be my favorite

card? I mean this might be the best

card we've seen all year already but it's better than the Derpy

card like usually right? Don't like this one.

Is this one is but like normally it can be you know nothing on

the mat Mi DeWitt Mi and I'm actually very happy that the

Belmont has and I think we're going to see this.

Honestly, I think we're going to we used to see like the Belmont

if there was no Triple Crown, kind of be like a little bit of

an afterthought but The spacings just works out better and I

think we're just going to see really good fields for the

Belmont, and you know what, I'm excited about it.

It's gonna be a good weekend. He's amazing.

Yeah, so we are here. Laughing the back back porch,

bringing you the horses have sides of the back porch.

This is the horse racing. A, we've got one big race that

we want to showcase from last week from the the last weekend

at Churchill Downs. I guess we need to talk about

that a little bit. But let's, before we do that,

let's I think we were both shocked to see rattle.

And Roll come off two weeks and look as good as he did.

And well, the thing is, I've been told by various people in

the horse thing that no, horse can run after two weeks, Mike,

they can't do it and certainly they couldn't do this sack show

us. Medina mask parade and Rattle

and Roll are stuck in behind a wall of four horses.

As they hit the top of the stretch, they turn for home and

call me fast comes powering off, the turn, takes the lead and

wanders to the rail, Rattle and Roll, trying to shake loose down

inside. Happy American is rolling down

the center Santina and Barbara Road were in tight.

It's call me. Fast and front Rail.

And roll continues to Rally. Happy American on the outside.

Here's the wire. Rattling, rattle, rattle and

roll or like, or like called me second fastest, huh?

Oh my god, Julie leper. Ooh, how about that rattling?

Roll adding to the Pimlico special win with the the big win

there in the blame. I don't know.

You know how I don't know if anyone else gets that reference.

Hopefully they do because, you know, are we going to see?

Like the like, you know, how Belmont had the big a a Belmont

or the development of the big gate?

Are we going like see the CD at the Big E or something like that

or literally Little P CC ITP anyway, Rattle and Roll.

Looked absolutely amazing in that race, two weeks.

And listen you can Besmirch the two weeks, rest all you want,

but the reality of it is is that if something bad would have

happened to Rattle, and Roll after two weeks of rest and on

that track, when they've announced that they were going

to move, the meat is ready to run.

Who's right? Uh-huh.

On a conversation with the horses ready and so if he's

ready to go and the purse is what it is.

A 225 K, go run the horse and in the Gulf 100 and you know

hundred twenty five hundred thirty thousand dollars.

No good for them. Yeah you look great by the way,

show. We were there for that for that,

for the most part. Yeah, about as good as finished

as we're going to see in person. Absolutely, as good as some of

those. I mean, I thought it said,

And so, I know really, really impressive to come back off the

short, way off there and good to see him pick that offer.

that was a good feel for it wouldn't listen steaks.

So you know, Big Win round roll. It's even keep it going.

Getting that blame. Now we won't see race and

Churchill do for the rest of for the rest of the summer.

Bad for me, I'll be honest. Yeah.

Now, that one hit hard, actually it harder than I thought it was

going to. It's um, and I could have people

around the country kind of taking shots and having fun with

it, but I don't know, I had my episode with sheriff on Friday.

I know you didn't listen to it. I did not.

That is correct. What are your takeaways though?

From the movie? Honestly, I thought it was

premature. I don't think that they were

able to really make it legit connection to the track

condition to the horse injuries. You know, is it coincidence?

I don't, I don't know. I think there's a whole lot of

stuff that could be going into this.

I think it's a bigger problem than just what's going on in

Churchill or maybe it's not that big of a problem at all.

And it's just the reality of that.

We're going to have about 1% of horses, are going to die and

that's sounds cold. And but well 111 hungry, what

about 1,000? Yeah, 10 thousand, sorry,

one-tenth of a percent. Yes.

And they're just kind of, you know, they kind of come in

waves. I mean we haven't had this kind

of wave at you. Churchill in a long time and

maybe it was just one of those things that the numbers kind of

catch up with you after a while. But I mean, you know, that's a

feel for, you know, I feel for her speak.

I feel for horse people a lot because it's running Dallas is

not run a Churchill. There's a lot of people that had

big events scheduled at Churchill Downs that get

cancelled, which is not the main concern is for the people who

had three more weeks of work at Churchill.

Take tickets, they serve drinks are doing Food Service their

janitors, whatever. It might be tons of people that

I talked to some Will the Turf Club?

Like these are, there's a group of people there about 20, people

that go to the Turf Club every freaking day.

I mean, it's there like this, their country club.

It's their, it's their family, they hang out.

They see each other during the holidays.

I know this, I've been invited to that holiday party before and

they were telling me that Churchill's not refunding their

Turf Club stuff, they're allowing them to guest passes

and for the September and the November meet for them to bring

I need a tutor. So I'm of the opinion.

We had one training. Can I just say that there's no

button for like required besmirch meant, that was

required besmirch rent. Like don't worry well, besmirch

when necessary. Yeah, the the part of this too

is one training injury that was unfortunately, a Derby

Contender? Yes.

It was very very public. But since then no training

injuries. Nope.

Just breakdowns during racing. So my senses were probably

racing the wrong. Because Traders don't put horses

out to train unless they're sure, they're going to be fine

and we've solver and over and over again that these are

actually injuries during during races.

And so we had didn't, every really get to see those

Provisions that we talked about last Thursday to see if they're

even going to work. I thought they were really

excellent and when especially that first provision, where, you

know, we weren't going to get starter bonuses anymore and so

which I found out someone who is a horse owner told me that those

only go to the trainer. Yes, so this, those starter

bonuses. The trainers for sure going to

race. Those horses, even if they're

not ready, just to get that starter bonus, or if it was

questionable or whatever else. And we never as my favorite

basketball coach on ESPN radio says we never got a chance to

let the cake bake, right? So maybe bra he doesn't host.

Yeah. We never got to see the effects

of those, we never. Yeah.

And so I don't really. I feel like it was a stretch.

I think it was a it was an over stretch that they're just

worried about making sure that the they win the public opinion

you know any announcement comes after.

After the market closes on Friday, Churchill Downs is a

publicly traded company. How much do you think this came

from the Board Room rather than from its side of Churchill

Downs? I think there's a good chance

that that's probably true, you know, because then people forget

about it on as far as like the people on Wall Street, forget

about ever being realistic about what Churchill is.

It is a building built for two days a year.

And then for every fourth year for Breeders Cup, that's what

the actual building is for sure. Okay, the giant 150,000 setup is

for one day a year. That day is coming Dawn moving

to Ellis now hurts their handle, but it does not hurt what they

did over that weekend, which was a record handled by the way.

Sure. And at 150,000 people and then

probably has a minimal impact on their handle.

I mean, at the end of the day because the Haney know what

happens, I don't know how to bed Ellis.

I don't think I'm going to try to figure it out, but that's

Well, I mean go up to watch races in Indiana, right?

Okay? So of course, all those horses

are going to head up to her to Horseshoe, where you get around

on the grass, run their, you wrote about Sarah, you and

replaces your brackets. For example, loves going up to

horseshoes. I mean, here's a be probably

love, brother take his horses. The horse, you didn't tell us.

I don't know the answer to that, but he's got a big set up there

for sure that we but the purse is still transfer for the

Churchill person, still transfer Dallas.

So, so for the next three weeks, that's a must travel for sure.

But now, I mean, just I get it people around the country and,

you know, whatever else. But like, you know, me like

Friday, get down, and down, go watch.

I'm not driving Henderson Kentucky for that, you know?

I mean, Do it. So, in case people are wondering

our next road, trip is the Indiana Derby.

July 8 will be up there. Biggest is coming to town, will

have this with us and so look for the 69 man.

He's enjoying his bougie seats at the Denver Nuggets, playoff

straight grade Stakes. Win third straight.

Great three. So, you know, obviously The

Fosters to little bit Step Up in class, we'll see what happens,

so, especially the configuration of dollars, so, Any Foster's

Mountain ether, Mana quarter on it.

All right, so he can go that distance.

That's his, that's his role. That's how he rattles things,

how he rolls. Yeah, the only issue with the

Breeders Cup Classic is the time for lunch, right?

Is trying to go that extra? Yeah.

Full for a long for him full to, I guess.

Would you think he'd be better suited for the mylar for the

classic at Del Mar? Yeah, he may as well go to the

class because it's two terms either way.

So if we're at Churchill I talk about one term, I love him.

He's never well I take that like looking at is like Mi the 16th

mi mi. 60 miles is now to be fair.

He was Pimlico special about 3/16.

Yep. So he only misses the classic

Distance by 4:30 and the Ben Ali was at 3:16 tequila.

Yeah right. So I mean he's one of those

races. So it's not like he can't get

the classic distance my opinion. I think we've seen it from him

and I get it. Those are great, three fields.

We got to remember, though, in Kentucky, the purses that come

along with a great three field look like a grade one account

for just so we're clear because we talked about her Indiana

Derby trip, Rattle and Roll finished seventh in last year's

Indiana Derby. And that is, I mean, There's

some serious horses in that race that we continue to see run and

have careers mr. Wallace is still running.

I mean, and we saw him I feels like forever ago.

So frankly the Indian Oaks Interstate a dream ended up

being a fine Filly to, right? So we get we get good horses out

of that side as well. Alright.

So after we wrap their arms up, bring it up to you the other

day. I've already in a Turf race

last? Yeah, idiot.

If it's a good day today, where you'll see a lot of things

especially you run a hundred thousand dollar raised people

are gonna show up. We're not going to spend too

much more time because we got a lot of races the handicapped.

We're going to talk all Belmont Stakes card.

This is just Saturday with nine graded Stakes for Point 85

million dollars in purses. And really, to me this is kind

of the launching pad for going into like Breeders Cup Citizen

and making sure that, you know horses horses are our position,

the where they need to be for that first weekend in November.

At Del Mar, where the surf meets the turf.

Let's go ahead and start with the with a star.

The pick three. This is the gray to all the way.

Before, before we handicap, just real quick, I did want to say,

do you have a thought on the Triple Crown this year?

Obviously, the fort a scratch in the derby disappointing because

we don't want the, you don't have a favorite to scratch out

number one. Number two, we get Mage to win.

I thought, a very deserving Derby winner.

Sure, nothing, you know, comes out of the Florida Derby, second

wins the Derby. That's a pretty normal route to

the derby through the Florida Derby.

Can't quite get it together in the Preakness, two weeks later.

That actually makes a lot of sense.

As wealthy National Treasures, though, it's just a really

average horse, okay? And do we think we think we

found that on Saturday? Oh yeah, he gets crushed.

Okay. I mean, I don't mind.

My bold prediction for the Belmont Stakes, is that National

Treasure National Treasure on the board.

Now I'll go no National Treasure on the board.

Okay. Yeah.

I'm not ready to throw Forte out with the bathwater yet because

I'm just I think he's so much more talented than the rest of

the three-year-old class. You know this still looks like

it's probably tappet prices to loose if I had to go with the

pick right now but we'll talk about that will get there, you

know, but we're going to start with but overall us my thoughts

about the this great three class like it's our this

three-year-old class Obviously, the 30 Phillies have been

extremely disappointing. And unless unless we get an

acorn winner, that's a repeat from From yolks, right?

I mean, unless we get that bounce back, we'll just because

they're better than all the other because they probably put

it. I just don't know how good the

group is what we didn't get that were used to.

Is that transition from year to year old 23 way?

We're used to that on the Filly side.

We are we happened to not get that this year.

We have to get way more of it on the male side, which is unusual

recently at least. And so for me at least I'm not

mad at the Filly side. It's just, it hasn't been as You

know, as productive as usually, I mean both previous Triple,

Crown Races, the horse that won, that was their first Stakes win,

you know? So that's disappointing.

I mean, no matter how you say it, I think that's just it's

just disappointing. So I'm hoping that the Colts do

a little bit better job than the Phillies have.

And maybe we see some late developing Colts that really

kind of hang together forever. So, yeah, I got we don't, I'll

tell you like, I still think Forte Forte could still Be a

force to be reckoned with in the in the Breeders Cup.

Classic look, he wants the ball mount.

He wins the Traverse and he's rolling toward the Breeders Cup.

He's gonna win. Threw you over here.

Yeah, it's still do that cause he's already got great

instincts, winds early this spring, right?

Absolutely. Okay so we're going to start

like I said with the the grade to True North 250,000 dollar

purse. This is for four year olds and

up, six and a half Furlong Sprint here at Belmont.

Who do you? Like in this onesie?

Look Elite powers back. This side of things.

This is one of those chances. Mike early in the sequence, if

you want to get value, you play against the horse coming back

from the Arabian Peninsula. Right now, everything that will

be power has done recently tells you all the powers gonna win

this race on Saturday, and we have, are you fascinated by

strobe? Because, like, this is like the

up-and-coming Sprinter, right? So what do you think about the

could strobe? Even give Eli Lilly power a run

for his money. Absolutely.

But we're talking about a horse that lost to something name

Skelly by open. Length.

Last time at Oaklawn Park, of course, that sets up a nice

layout for Brad Cox, here, it's a horse that's 13, straight

hundred hundred Myers. If I were looking somewhere that

wasn't Elite power, I would actually look inside the today's

flavor with many Franco, George Weber one last time out over

sloppy, go at Aqueduct before, that one at the aquaduck surface

3 times. I always and Mike knows this the

Long Island tracks. I consider the dirt tracks to be

very similar, so if a horse is good at Aqueduct, I trust that

that will translate to Belmont as well, the deeper more Sandy

surface. And so that horse to me gives

you the best chance because even in a loss in the Carter in a

grade, one that horse only finished with into likes of the

lead there, with doppelganger with repo rocks with, very good

horses. People rocks is running in the

mat mile. Yeah, we're talking about a

horse, not having to run against that kind of group.

So, if I was looking for an upset here, I would trust me

Franco who rides in New York all the time.

I would look at the one here for value for going outside, the

last time. Only power loss.

Who won that race. Stroke stroke, whether that's

okay. So I'm going to be fascinated by

the 10 16 for the first time, right?

Yep. So no Lasix for in this race but

you're a would you consider so you would would you consider

singly power in this race in the sequel?

Yes. Okay.

I think that's going to be pretty, but that's going to

become so in other words, if you want to hit the sequence, play

it for a little bit higher than interval, right?

Like a dollar ticket rather than 50 Cent, take it that kind of

thing, but if you want to get value, you go get sleepovers.

shape here is the even money favorite here.

I think totally deserve it with Flavio and Pratt has 11 the

Maker's Mark. Last time at Keeneland, that was

over a true to turn at Keeneland doesn't have to do that here and

I think the shoot will play just fine for this horse who had

previously run in France at shorter distances, but seems to

have stretched out just fine. I actually think the one issue,

one and a half inch turned here is going to is going to suit.

Well for, for what we tried to do, here are no Delacour and

floppy and Pratt obviously teaming up here.

Don't do very often but they are 245 lifetime together.

Including went on this horse at Keno last time.

I'm out his horses win back-to-back at 28%.

So I do think, of course, has a really, really good shot here.

I went seven outside next with phyllo.

D Ariana, if you wanted the Italian option here, you would

go with the seven back-to-back. Great to Turf wins at Woodbine

last year. Brought him off the layoffs on a

synthetic Sprint. Here.

Last time I think just to get his legs Underneath Him.

Mark hasse. Very good off the alpha, lay off

here. So 4 to 1 with that kind, of

course, if you were looking for someone else might be a really,

really good play here, you get Louis, is the two of them

really, really productive. Together at 15%.

And so if you were looking for someone other than the one who I

do think is the most likely winner here, I would look to the

seven. That would be a few load, the

Ariana. Alright, so your anaconda don't

want none. Unless you got buns hun.

So I'm Rowdy the twos and interesting adhere to because it

is a Chad, Brown off the layoffs.

Good luck predicting that the grade to Brooklyn 250,000 dollar

race. This is a mile and a half on the

dirt, but this is for four-year-olds.

This is not the three-year-old kinds of this is like the

Belmont distance, but for older horses, we see next in this

race. Who do you like in this one?

So I laid it on the to hear read run 621 Mike.

Maker. Tyler guy falling on lost by a

neck first time, trying to distance last time out at

Churchill, love the idea of this horse knowing the distance.

Now getting run back at this distance hoping that we'll see a

better race out of him. Here is going to be a stocking

type which I really like. So Tyler can set up his trip the

way that he wants. I'll Trust Red Run here who had

been working at The Churchill Downs, training track like maker

real good in these kinds of races as well 20% with dirt, 17%

or droughts here. So I trust him in this spot.

So I landed just a little bit of a price there.

I went to the eighth next and that's Lone Rock load Rock has

not won this year's 0 for 2 but did did run second at Oaklawn

Park earlier on Brandon that Murphy really disappointing

almost like he didn't run last time finished up the track by

twenty three lengths and so I'm completely drawing a line

through that hoping we get back to some of that form from last

year he won this race in 2021. So my hope is that we get some

of that form back and so will see him back at Belmont where

he's never missed the board. In three runs, does have a

hundred to be figure, His Highest of his Career was in

this race. Two years ago hoping that Lone

Rock. Get some of that back.

I went to the seven next which is warrant the favorite here.

Flavia and Pratt won that race of Churchill.

But if I'm getting 522 on that horse, I'd rather get Red.

Rock the to horse who read, run scuse me, who finished right

behind him and Kurt 641, kind of number.

So that's where I landed those would be my top three in there.

All right, when we were cutting right there on man, we're just,

we're going right on now. This is a race that I

traditionally just really love that.

We're getting into the great ones, and the Ogden Phipps is

year after year for Phillies and Mayors four year olds, and up,

this is usually great, great, great race.

We see search results. Come back.

This horse one on Derby Day at Belmont, integrated to, she beat

idiomatic who came back at dominated this past week at, at

Churchill Downs. So, I am hoping that we get a

little bit of that form. We see that idiomatic came out

of that race really well. Ran to really well over the dirt

at Churchill Downs. I'm hoping that past the

champagne 821, I think you're going to get every bit of a 21mm

this horse. Well, you those are three going

to get so much money, so much. I mean you might get eight,

nine, ten to one of the other horses though.

I do think Claire's the best here.

Has won at Belmont before she won the fifth with a 10-6 p

figure last year. So maybe it's just her turn to

come back and win this race again.

kind of horse that's just going to plot along and get himself

into third place. But we had Bel yeas on a like a

lot but there's a lot of horses here that we wouldn't be

surprised to see who wins and kind of It's gonna be

interesting to see how this three-year-old class kind of

separates out and goes forward, you know.

Yeah, really the older horse Belmont Breeders Cup, Classic

Challengers. I think he's in who's getting

the Foster and all that stuff art collector, you know, all

those horses. It's not like overly

intimidating, you know. Sure.

So one of these horses develops, would you be shocked to see at

the Rio when the, when the Breeders Cup Classic know, No, I

wouldn't. Yeah and I think that's a fair

point. We haven't seen table back

stateside yet, right? So he's got a chance.

If he can pick off a couple races in California and really

look good, maybe a Delmar, where we'll go.
