Full Transcript
All right, welcome to a star-studded special.
Even this is our man. It looked again.
I thought I'd check this is what happened when Zach's not here.
All right star-studded we're having the angle 2023 Derby
draft and we're going to do it a little differently this year.
Louis, of course, she's been blocked.
It some very special friends to join us to do the pics and we're
just going to throw tomatoes at them, right?
Correct. Yeah, I'm gonna tell typer
without the great hair without the knowledge without the
experience, but Mel Kiper still. Yeah, so we're welcoming our
friends. We will go counterclockwise
here. We'll start with the, the Hall
of Famers name is Dan Issel joining us from his bunker in
Colorado. And then, from a bunker in
Florida is our guy, Barry Spears.
Urban handicapper. I might go bad robbery.
That's a real, it's awesome. Yeah, that's a great backdrop.
Yeah, thanks man. All right.
And then for the hotel, you know what I'm wondering, what it
would take. For somebody to throw Rotten
Tomatoes at us and you have. How could he take practical
move? Number one overall.
They're right. And then we'll go to the bottom.
Right is Davis. Kevin Kilroy at trust your luck
on Twitter. He'll be part of the notes team
for the Kentucky Derby this year.
So if you are covering it or following it at all, it's
Kevin's fault. And then above him, of course,
is friend of the show. Dan Dillman with the drf, remind
me. As a drf Dan Dillman is that you
on Twitter, drf? Underscored an omen.
Boom. Okay.
So on underscore underscore is matter, that's right.
Of course if this is going to be joining us on the on the
coverage. So we're super excited about
that and he did such a good job of Breeders Cup that we decide
to have them back now. But we're bringing them into
place now where the alcohol is free and so you know, we're two
halves are so I don't know. Six days of shows guys.
Next week live from Churchill down so make sure yeah, what's
our Wheels dream. We gotta run, guys right there
for K, Kilroy it looks like yeah.
Come here. Well, they go.
All right. I cannot touch it.
You can't do the weeding know. It gives me an instant headache
like it is like, I'm allergic to whatever it is.
So all right Louis I've got a I've got a blue.
We're gonna do a snake draft just so.
So I wonder where we got a blue color for the blue skies that
we're going to have on the first Saturday of may.
We got green because this shows going to help people.
Make a whole lot of green. We got pink for the Oaks, and
then we've got a I started trying to make it red but it's
got little yellow, like the color of the saddlecloth, okay?
For the so, pick a color Lu to see who gets our first pick,
okay, yellow. We're going to go with yellow
and I actually do not know who this is.
So let's see, the first pick look.
Barry knew it was him. He had his arm up like this.
He's going to get the first pick.
Pink blue or green on the next one?
No, no I'm gonna let Barry pick your rebuttal.
Oh my baby. Yeah I'm going to take no, no
no, yeah, I got no, he's gonna pick second.
Oh well there's there's the we all know what's going to happen
the first week back now but it's all right, it's okay.
It's a good pick. The horse goes s little s will
go. S is like there's a little bit.
Back-to-back. That's not the end of the world.
Ban pangur green. Who do you like here?
Great. Daniel trade is pigtown.
He thinks like eight horses are going to go with the first
finger green. I think you could single but go
ahead. This will take her green, pink
or green, Dan pink? Okay, pink.
All right. Kilroy and that means dancing
class. All right, bring it to bring in
the draft board. Now, which I'm super excited
because we made it here and we're going to move berries,
little head over because the the first pick of the draft is
coming up and we'll go for now, hold on.
I gotta, I gotta get the whole thing on with the first pick in
the 2023 Derby draft. Oh guys lot of black side.
It's very spear side. Berry picking.
I'm gonna go with the horse with the most upside.
All right, that a long wingspan. Overall draft will last night my
bad 4444. Take Forte is the number one
pick. Of course trained by Todd
Pletcher and The winner of the Florida Derby.
Very soft picking my opinion but will let Louis make fun of it.
Go ahead Lily. Yeah, when you look at Forte,
what really comes to mind here is the jockey trainer
combination of irad RTS and Todd Pletcher.
Really can't go wrong with this pic here, makes sense at the top
of the draft here. I expected him to be off the
board. One, two or three.
So I think the fairies Midwife pick here.
I've almost lost my almost lost my screen.
Jeez. Oh Pete.
All right, little technical dude.
There there's buried with Forte. Right there.
So esle with the second pick in the draft here, who you going
with? Dan.
Can you hear us? I hope so.
I don't know as he lost his hearing.
Hey Dan, it's your pick bud. I will do we put them on the
clock and then all of a sudden he's got to go ahead and like
hahaha and then we he gets skipped.
He's straight chillin. Yes.
Or wall. This dank dank, and here is an
era. I'm gonna remove them and then
add them back on the see, if that helps.
Dad. Can you hear us now?
Oh no, dad. All right, he just left and he's
gonna come back in. So we're, you know, let's talk a
little bit about forte mean, obviously is going to be the big
favorite going in to the race on Saturday.
You think we're going to hear people, maybe, you know, make
any assumptions about violence being The Sire sire.
Never winning to turn race. A to turn grade Stakes.
Race is that can be an issue. Dan Dillman?
Not at all. This horse has shown that
distance is exactly. He what he wants.
I think we saw that in the Florida Derby were really good
horse. One of us will draft him later
on Mage got the jump on him. That would first you're flying
to them down and grind him down. I think a mile and an eighth is
no problem for the source. I think a mile and a quarter is
going to be just fun. Lily, what's the update on
Daniel? I've got a black screen for
danice, all right now that's what I got Louis, what's the
update with Dana? So I sent him.
The link via text message as well in anticipation of this so
hopefully he'll be able to jump back in.
Okay, all right. Well let's hope that we might be
getting big ass right now. Hold on.
Okay, let's go. Not yet.
Anybody else? Have any kind of takes on Forte?
Kevin? Have you you haven't been you
haven't seen him yet but what are least live on the track at
Churchill? I have I think he's looked fine.
I haven't like seen him work real hard but what?
Was your what's your take on him?
Kevin, I saw him this morning. You know, he was moving with
tappet rice and he just he flies across the ground.
You know, even just Galloping. I'm, I'm against them, you know?
I'm not sure what the, you know, he's hasn't lost right for quite
some time, but it's so much Buzz about it means to be coming from
off the pace and I don't know. I heard somebody say today like
oh Triple Crown. They're thinking triple crown
for my just don't have that sense her forte at all.
What about? What about you guys?
You think he's He's Larger than Life.
I don't even know if he has an edge over this field.
Yeah, right. Yeah.
All right, is he it's your pick second.
Big game Margolis. All right, it keeps going in and
out. I apologize.
That's right. We're gonna start calling you
Boomer here in a second. Angel of Empire is the second
pick the winner of the Arkansas. Derby trained by Brad.
Cox is so picks. Angel of Empire.
Louis would say you about that. I mean fluffy.
And prep might be one of the hottest jocks going in North
America right now. So you at least have that angle.
You got the homeboy from a couple blocks, down the street
and Brad Cox training here, love the Run, frankly in the Arkansas
Derby pressing style, can win in the Kentucky Derby, and so
Angela vampire. Very good picket number two.
All right, that will go on with our story for you.
Okay, yeah. Kevin.
Yeah, you saw the person Arkansas Derby sitting there
with, with, with with, you know, some whores players and we were
going at it. It's Ron Foshay was their Tom
Morley. Let's see who else was.
There was my guy, allow me, I will sit around Mia.
Write it as some other guys and we're trying to figure out what
to do with the race. And I was like, listen cocks
Barn, hoping that like Angel vampire.
They're not they're not they're not and I'm saying that, you
know, we're throwing back the beers they're like okay we'll
cross out angel of Empire that I'm like the king Russell.
Look at, look at this King Russell.
Is that Good on ya que NOS a three-year-old.
He could really step forward and we see him on the track and he
looks just so full of himself. I'm like, we got to use that
horse. So I was at once the, the
villain and the hero of the Arkansas Derby should have e and
then the cheers of me. The people who didn't listen to
me about angel vampire. We're pretty happy, but he seems
to prove it me and him Flavia chooses him.
He seems like he's definitely gonna get the distance and, you
know, Cox has been doing doing nothing wrong with those three
year olds. But To go a little bit off the
radar. Maybe this is not a very
strategic pick, but I'm high on to Phil's, we need that.
All right, all right, I'm gonna go, I'm going, I'm totally off
to that. By the way, I'm gonna go to
Phil's as and finish in the top 10.
So, there we go on that one. I'll go pull against him.
Yeah. I'm out on that.
Be a buzz horse. And with 100-point race, I don't
know. Yeah, because the because of
Jeffrey's not a real Hunter Point Race, the other than you a
derby, come on now, you know that.
All right. All right, let me go ahead and
make fun of it. No, I love to now you up.
I think he might be the fastest horse in this race.
And so now I like to pick a lot. We have seen the form again.
This year translate from Turf way to Keeneland.
It would not surprise me for translates from Turf way to
Churchill Downs. In this case of to Phil's who
ran by the way I think that prep the Jeff Ruby was the most
impressive prep run that we've seen in a hundred Point raised,
by the way. I didn't actually get to show
everybody, the the head shots that were using so.
Well, in case, I just make sure I found the greatest pictures of
each. One of you all that capacity.
There's not a whole lot to choose from Perry.
I mean, Dan just got off, Wall Street, and just made like the
deal of the century right there, because he's so upset about that
picture, right? Hellman back-to-back pics here,
who did horses on the board? Here.
I'm a little surprised that he's at number 4, I mean, he's ticks
all the boxes. He's the only horse in the race
with two triple digit buyers he figures.
He's Speedy, he's classy, he's bringing a little.
So kalpas ass you're gonna move. Absolutely practical, move is
off the board. I love the pict until the Santa
Anita Derby, and then I started wondering like, I didn't feel
that horse finish, very strong. Louis would says you about
practical move, I'm gonna let them defend the pick because you
It immediately, I understand that he gets good trips in his
races and I understand in the Santa Anita Derby.
He didn't win by a country mile but they call these races prep
races for a reason. I wonder if this Source was
completely cranked up for the Derby.
I have a feeling that he is going to be tactical in a good
position going into the first turn and if he avoids that Kwang
going into the first turn that Crush of horses going on to the
Twin Spires for the first time. He's going to be in a great spot
and in it with a big chance. When they turn for home, totally
agree with Dan. I also think, when we talk to
John Lindo from thoroughbred La, he said look he doesn't need the
race so they're not going to have him totally cranked and he
still did it made her and he will reign as well as you could
ask a horse to run over a mile and an eighth in his first time
in the u.s. especially. So I know I'm with him.
I'm with Dan here, Katie get all ten.
Four logs is the only question for me about him, that's it.
I think that's a big question I really do because, you know,
like maybe he was shortened strike just a little bit going
the mile and an eighth last timeout.
But I just think three nice route races especially last time
going to Mile and an eighth. I'm just going to trust the trip
in here. I think if he stays out of
trouble he gets the jump on the clothes or something able to
hold them off. I think we can all agree,
though, would be great for yachting to get a derby win,
without the aid of mr. Baffert.
So I would, you know, I would hate for him to get that win and
having a stroke. So you know this is all on Tim
yachting so I'm rooting for that.
Hey, one thing before we move on to the second round, A lot of
buzz on the back side, I guess about the point system changes
this year and the fact that, you know, adding those fourth and
fifth place points, you know, we had the second place, finisher
the Arkansas. Derby not qualify for the race.
So what are your all takes it. You all like the, the changes to
the point system. Do we or where you had it?
Like to guarantee a spot you had to run in more than one prep
race and any thoughts on that. Go to bear.
I like it. I Larry likes it.
Yes absolutely. It gets more horses involved and
gets them involved earlier more prep races makes for a better
quality race. Yeah, I think it's perfect.
Hey, I'm gonna sentiment. Yeah, I think that I think
they'll tweak it going forward. I think airing tonight that the
getting horses involved and then you know making sure that
they're able to you know have more frankly More film for us to
study a more experiences is really important.
Yeah. Kevin what are you say?
I like that fact. And more races, but the the
points distribution just seems off, I mean, that hundred points
is just seems stupid, right? I mean, why do you need a
hundred points for anything getting that all that for first
time you should get, definitely get in the derby when you get
first. Right, but I think maybe just
distribute the points a little bit more evenly between those
first through third spots of could make it a little bit, a
little bit better and have some some horses like, Skinner, you
know, just being there, no matter what and then.
You know, King Russell, like he could be interesting, will see
me look good this morning, but I'm sure he's gonna get in, but
yeah, yeah, I think they need to redistribute the points.
Of course, Skinner gets in today after the tragedy of the
Churchill Downs this morning, which, you know, we hate to see
a horse. Get in that way, but no sooner
is now in the race. So.
Alright. Second, pick for Dan ilmin,
tough call. I have it between two horses.
I'm gonna go with a guys won four in a row.
I'm not worried about this. I'm not worried about
Connections, he's still a little bit green, the post position
draw is kind of key for this Source.
I don't want him down inside, I don't want him in behind horses.
Get him to the outside in the clear.
Let that big stride go and it's tap, it priced in the lane, I
love the pict. A trace, of course, the maturity
is the issue here with this horse, but he's carried himself.
Well, so far, Churchill Downs. So, tap at rice is the pick and
could be the most talented horse in the field.
That's me. This is a major value at five
frankly. Horse that, as Dan mentioned,
just a winner. Right?
Is just a winner and he's totally right about the not
worrying about the the distance or anything like that.
You get Luis saez here as well. Who knows?
Churchill Downs really well? So no, it's an excellent.
Excellent value at pick number five.
All right, we're put Kevin Kilroy, he's face down here.
Kevin, who do you got and pick number 6.
Yeah, I'm between to write out a bit rice.
Was a was all the top of my list there, so thanks for stealing
one back from. And try to start by should be
cute or go with go with a cocks horse.
So I'm gonna be cute and crack a beer and I take Steve asmussen
to get his first derby win with disarm.
All right. Rest horse, who they were, they
were late getting that Taurus. Going had a little bit of a
pause there but, you know, I don't think he was fully cracked
in that last one. I think they did.
Just want to get get the points there.
He impressed me getting second and a tasteless race coming from
off of it. In the Louisiana Derby and Kings
bar. Just you know had it all his way
that day and you know Steve has no pressure.
I covered him last year with with epicenter and it was the
opposite hang around the Steve. Asmussen.
Barn in the morning was as tense as it can get.
And this year he's going to have no pressure with this arm, you
know, has a long price in here but he's love this horse since
you know, since you know, they the two-year-old season really
thought that this one had the most promise once extra name.
It really seemed like he wasn't going to go forward so disarm
take that step forward, get the, get the win, the Derby for from
a Man. Steve there it is.
So this arm is The Pick of course got in with the six
points that he got in that license takes was the last horse
to qualify for the race even though he's not the last in the
point system and of course he is a son of gun Runner.
So you got to like that a lot too.
So Louis thoughts on disarmed? Well, we've only had eight
horses who weren't in first and second at the eighth Pole.
In the Kentucky Derby, go on to win.
I got that from some guy named. Kevin Kilroy a deep closer here
to win the Kentucky Derby with the six picks.
I think this is the first time that I think someone's made a
bad picture. Okay.
Wow, interesting. Yeah because you got to wonder
who's that who is that early early rabbit speed in this race,
right? So Dan Issel, who do you have
with pick seven? I'm gonna go with mad.
Uh, you know, it's funny where horse racing has gone.
This will be this horses. Fourth start.
There were Derbies when horses made four starts in April,
before 30. But, you know, this, this is
another horse kind of like tap at Rice.
He's got to get a good break. He didn't do that in the Florida
Derby. He was last or next, to the last
down, the backside made a premature move.
Around the turn, I thought he was gonna run off with the race
and then Forte, who is number one are both beat him a length
and the Florida Derby. So I'm pretty excited about this
or so I'll go with with Madge on the for number seven.
All right. There it is.
That's the son of good magic. Luis saez will be a board that
horse to the horse that came in second, in the Florida Derby.
Louis, what are your takes on me?
You know, he's interesting because he's a progressive type
and he runs a style, that's more conducive to winning the Derby.
He's probably going to be in, I don't know, night tend to place
coming off the last turn and so if he's still got any kick left,
you know, that's a good magic mom's by Big Brown that could be
you know the kind of assignment able to build into that.
I do. I agree with Dan the issue here
is the lack of experience and so look we're getting into past the
top five. I think there's a pretty clear
top five this year. For lots of people, once you get
into that you're gonna be able to put holes in people's
arguments, but at least with bait, you've got a running style
that I think is more You said the winning?
The Kentucky Derby. All right Barry, you got
back-to-back pics here? Let's go.
Yeah, this this what I like because there's two horses that
I do, like that are still left at nice, definitely playing on
Derby day and the first one I'll go with the dermis.
So cocky, the Japanese horse I think this horse is probably not
going to be on the lead. I think everybody's thinking
this horse is just going to do like the ones last year but but
I don't think this horse is going to want to be on the lead.
I think he's going to be up close and definitely has to get
position but I don't think that one's going to be on the LIE
that in fact, I think Jace is Road and probably Kings barn, or
probably going to be out there, winging it, and hopefully Derma
is in the second flight, ready to pounce married?
You see the work yesterday? How they had Dermot behind?
Yes. And that really, exactly.
That's what made me say that. It, you know, it looks like
they're training them. For that purpose so he can just
pass horses and if he's able to do that he's going to be tough
and he's done in Japan. So I'm not really too worried
about him passing horses. He was so good in the UAE Derby.
I'm interesting. Your guys take about that entire
night or racing. I thought the rail was really
good that day about a horses were riding.
Absolutely. He was on the lead and on the
rail but boy he certainly finished that race off.
That was one of the fastest you ain't Derby's.
I was very impressed. Yeah, he feels different than
other shippers. Also, Dan, as you mentioned,
because he had that success in Japan before going to the
Arabian, Peninsula, this isn't just a horse that started on the
Arabian. Peninsula state is running over
here. They moved him over here, really
early to. So they've given him a real
ample chance to get to know the track here.
Get comfortable. It does feel a little different
than say, a Mendelssohn or something like that where there
was a lot of Buzz as well. And then of course he ends up on
the last place cup that we all get around town here, every
Derby season. But Dan Issel, I know that
you're pretty high under Masonic a yourself Yeah, I like him a
lot for all the reasons that that have been mentioned.
What's interesting about this horse?
He's by minding your biscuits. Who was, I believe a sprinter in
this country and was was exported to Japan but I agree
with all of this. In fact, he was there's a couple
horses on the board that I didn't have clothes to my top
but he was one of them I think I had him.
He was number six on my board. And so, yeah, I think I think
this horse has got a real shot to win the Derby.
He, I say mind your biscuits, one it in Milan, eighth to, I
didn't realize that I didn't think so.
I'll check it out real quick. I'll say this about that work
yesterday. Either he's an awfully.
Nice horse or the other Japanese Deport donkeys.
One, one of the two. Well, we do have germicidal got
a, and continue, our been on the track at None already out there
especially spooling. They've been schooling in the
gate like almost every morning they've been working on that Mi
sheet. It's been very interesting to
kind of watch their different approach.
They'll they'll come on the track for a little bit.
When the, when the time is there for the Derby notes horses and
they'll go right back in the go to work in the mail, Chute a
lot. It's been my dear biscuits did
win, the Lucas, classic at Churchill Downs.
Going a mile and an eighth. So there.
Yeah, about that. Look at that.
All right. Well, let's move on.
Then what's your next pick their bear?
I'm actually impressed that I had that off the top of my head.
Should be my next pick. I'm going to go with hit show it
show and I think this horse had a pretty good effort in that
would Memorial with a bad post position and still ran on.
Well I think he got beat because the post position I think got
him beat so I think he's going to come out of that race very
well and be able to be kind of in a good position here.
He has enough speed to kind of be where he wants it.
Show course, out of that wooden world came in.
Second is a son of candy rod and another Brad Cox horse there.
So are you great? So Dan I'll put you back on, you
know, you leave us you come back but it's your pig, Dan.
So, who do you like here with the okay?
I'm going to stay with the Brad Cox theme as Louis and Mike
know, I'm a huge fan of Brad's for a number of reasons.
Change if you like tap it twice, don't you have to, like,
verifying dire fine. Take verifying, number 10.
All right. So verifying gets dropped in the
10 spot the second place, finisher in the Bluegrass
Stakes, Brad, Cox, and Tyler Gaffney own, a son of justify.
So there you go. All right, Louis, and he takes
on on Dance pick their I both of those pics actually.
I really like I think it shows an interesting entry here.
I think that's the kind of horse that hits the board in a lot of
derbies because he's always involved in Wishes.
And I'll be interested to see how he runs course.
We've got that long, you know, the long in between since Fuji
Pegasus of course in 2000 of the Wood.
Memorial winner winning the Derby.
But you know, if the third place winner of the third place
finisher of the Jeff Ruby Stakes could win the Derby.
I'm sure that the hit show could do the same and verifying is an
interesting horse man. I kind of don't know what to do
with him. I didn't love at the end of the
Bluegrass that that he just got run past by tappet rice.
But I also don't totally hold it against him either because I
think he's a pretty fine, he's a pretty fine cold.
All right, we're moving on to Kevin's pick number 11.
Could you like there? Kevin, I was just sweating over
here. Just hoping you all didn't take
my my guy Confidence Game. Look at that Runner.
Is he's ready to roll. So we haven't seen my boy, Jack
feelings. I think he's gonna be that.
That that's what they're saying, right?
The poll was that they might take that money, right?
He know, that's the same connections.
All right. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah wage at.
He has run since winning in the rebel and there's a little bit
of question there. But yeah, I spent some time at
the barn, you know, while he was down at Fairgrounds and I with
him a bunch today and everything is going well with confidence
game talking to his exercise Rider.
Alex, he says he's just about ready to rip his arms off when
he when he's out on him, he's a he might be the pace.
Presence that sneaks up on people, he won wire-to-wire
earlier in his career, he won the rebel from off the pace but
being so fresh off the shelf and just hearing about these Works.
He might be, you know, game to go the front.
I don't think he needs to. I think he's proved that.
He's got tactical options, he's got that, you know, read by who
was the, the breeder there, when the Summerwind.
Equine. Thank you.
Right and they got some yacht has a sister.
I can't ever say her name and Luis Tiant right up, loosen up
day and I think think he's got that pedigree.
They had some x-ray issues at the sales of Keith is just a
master of finding a deal in The Bargain Bin 25,000 dollar for a
horse that younger brother went for 325,000 to this to vauban.
So I think I think he's ready to roll.
He's moving fantastically across the track.
That's something I look for seeing that confidence.
See In that exercise. A lot of and Conference game is
God. So, I'm excited about that guy.
I'm just gonna ask Dan Dillman here.
Do you happen to know any of the last winter to skip 100-point
race? That's a good question of the
top of, yeah, because yeah, he hasn't run since February.
That doesn't actually bother me that much.
It's not a huge layoffs at, they're not talking six, seven
months or something but I can't remember the last time we had a
horse, skip 100-point race and then show up and win the
Kentucky Derby, I think that would be my only thing.
Only knock against him. We've seen candy ride.
Everything. So, I mean, why can't they go to
add 4 lugs on the dirt? Because they do everything else
got desormeaux in this situation.
He's fantastic trainer. I agree with you.
Yeah. And and this is, these are very
easy connections to Rapport between James, Graham, and, and
Keith are so to exercise, maybe he had a fever there for a
little bit. That was both, that was the the
backside rumor that I never got confirmation from from the bar
at all. But that's, I'm not sure if that
was sort of why they skipped but the storm has, you know, he's
always doing things as Own way, which I love about him and I
think you got to trust that. If if somebody can pull one out
of his hat with that was given that hundred-point race.
He can't overtake the last forever.
Eight-week fever, two out of three wins for conference game.
Have been at Churchill Downs, including a few turn race back
in November, did not look great in the lecompt.
I don't think Kevin you were at that.
Trace, I'm sure. He tended to that pace though.
Remember Echo again, which is going so fast you and I think
that compromise some there and but yeah, it didn't didn't turn
out that. Well, what would he finished?
Fourth there, he finished third behind his and coffee who have a
lot of question marks about and then to Phil's came in second
that race. So, but beat Rocky can and that
allowance race win at Churchill Downs.
And so as a very strong there, of course, that's from the don't
tell my wife Stables, which is Is an all-time great name for an
ownership group so there you go. Everybody in this group just
smiled out that's all. Yeah.
Daniel mean you got back-to-back picks.
Let's go my next election. Number 12, if you watched his
last race, he finished third the Winter Road, the rail, the
runner-up Road, the rail, he was on the outside throughout.
I think that ground loss, worked against him, he's a horse and
still learning. He has yet to In a complete race
but I think the potential is there he goes out for mr.
John Sheriff's, who trained the horse named Zenyatta.
And of course, trainers Kentucky Derby winner name, Giacomo
Skinner slips into the race today and he might slip into the
Winner's Circle on the first Saturday in.
May, I think this horse has a lot of ability.
They thought very highly of him last year.
Very conservative born random in a couple of great once takes is
a maiden. That's a great pick right there
is course, Victor Espinoza knows This way around the Kentucky
Derby as well. Santa curling Louis.
What is your Take On The Pick of Skinner?
Lot of folks, going to say course we got it, ya know, know,
for sure. I we're now into the teens here,
right? And getting into the team.
So it's 12, this makes sense, the breeding makes total sense.
I would say, that's the biggest upside for Skinner, is the curl
in in the Malibu Moon. Those two things are huge, huge
positives. And like you mentioned, it's
Victor. Espinoza man.
He's done it a couple times, so no, it's a good pick.
Absolutely. All right, Dan, who you like in
13? I'm a little bit surprised he's
still on. The on the Block, he's unbeaten.
He's trained by a guy named Pletcher, he won the Louisiana
Derby, which is at a mile, and three sixteenths.
Kind of close to a mile and a quarter now.
Yes, he had a perfect trip on the lead that David is also one
from off of it. Todd's done.
This in the past, really likes to run horses at Tampa Bay
Downs, that he really likes. You ran the source in a
allowance race. In the second lifetime, start, I
like his tactical speed. I like his pedigree.
I like his connections. I like it's upside, I like kings
Barnes King. Amy.
Yeah, I'm actually shocked that horse is still around.
I agree with you. On that front too.
I would have I would have him much earlier.
So Kings Barnes the pick their Louis Son of Uncle Mo which
we've seen in Uncle Mo do before.
So who you what do you think here?
What are the positive things about him?
Is in that Louisiana Derby at the distance that Dan's talking
about he gets out front and they are not fast fractions, let's
not pretend they were not however he was not hurting for
any speed or effort at the end of that race.
And so even though Oh, it was probably three, quarters of a
second, full short, you know, of being a normal Pace.
Trace. This is what, by the way.
This is what good jockeys do. They Rock everybody to sleep and
they just run away with the field when they have the very
best horse out front, as those Pratt.
Right in that horse in that race, I think it was lobbying in
Louisiana Derby. I do like that.
He's gotta my own 3:16 that doesn't bother me.
Unusual path to win the Kentucky Derby do through Fairgrounds as
far as Louisiana Derby. All right.
We're moving on to it was the 13th.
Pick Dad. I'm not really hate.
No. Don't worry.
Are you get Kings? Borrow the 13th pick.
That's unbelievable. I agree.
Yeah, that's better than getting to Phil's at, for I promise or
it's foreshadowing. Yeah, it's not the 17.
All right, Kevin. Who do you like it?
There at 14. I'm going to take the real
FrontRunner of the group. JC's, Road.
Give me that speed horse. Who maybe can't get the
distance. Maybe not, maybe not, but this
is a horse that I've heard been described as a coward.
And welcome to coward, do run, and hide.
You guys got it. Get that easy trip, JC's Road,
being the one right behind them. So I think there's no choice but
to split this horse and that could work out.
Well, for him, you get, we haven't had too many gate to
wire winners and the Kentucky Derby.
I think it's, you know, less than 10, you know, but I think
it's more likely with the point system.
I think it's more likely, than not, you know, so it's, you
know, so I don't hate it, you know.
Yeah, pay scenario could work out well sure.
So JC's Road. And again, another Brad Cox.
Why did been the first Derby horse on the backside?
Maybe I think he came in with a stable mate, but I'm not 100%
sure. He's been back there for a long.
Long time. All right.
Danny with us, by the first time going in the the Iroquois go to
my land. A 60th is a two-year-old at.
Churchill, ran, third in that race behind curly Jack, who is
about as good a two-year-old as there was in the fall.
So if he could repeat some of that form, he's definitely
danger to hit the board. How do you like it?
Number 15, mr. Whistle.
And a lot of call you that sorry, Dan.
I don't know, we're kind of down to the short hairs.
That's all you and I have Dan winner on the board.
Raise Cain, is are fake here? That's well take, although I,
you know, that race hasn't been much of a harbor harbinger of
Successfully in the in the Kentucky Derby and that that the
track was awful that race just fell apart, I'll take him just
because he is a hundred Point winner but don't have a lot of
confidence in that pic raised came to half-brother to Forte.
So I mean we got the same side here, we got both out of
violence, so are both from violence progeny.
So maybe the fact that You finished fifth in the Bluegrass
means you didn't like, seeing them.
You might like Churchill. So we, you never know there,
with that one. So raise Cain, with Joel,
Rosario aboard is the pick at 15, Louis, and he takes on raise
Cain. Just I realize I've been
following horse racing. A long time that it makes me
feel old that violence and Lemon.
Drop Kid are both listed next to this horse's name.
Good Lord feel like they were running last spring, man.
That's ridiculous. I don't just that Aqueduct run
in the Gotham. I mean, if you look at that form
and you wanted to see a horse, repeat the type of form It could
deal with, you know, a sloppy track or something like that.
I think this is a horse that could do that.
All right, so we'll move on to Barry's last two picks Barry
here. You got to make them count these
last two. Yeah, so much to choose from at
this point. I don't even know where to go
last year. This would have been a great
time to be picking. Exactly, like he would have been
in the race. We haven't even been on her.
Yeah. Dang it.
I'm gonna go with the reincarnate.
I think that horse ran a pretty good race actually to back and
and he kind of it was in the slop.
He kind of got shuffled back, got some dirt in his face and
still kept running. He kind of stopped for a little
bit and ran on again, and I thought that was pretty
interesting and I think he can build off of that his, the race
after, in the Arkansas Derby. It wasn't that good but he
didn't run all that bad and and I can see him maybe kind of
hanging around, if things kind of Falls his way in the derby.
Another good magic. We saw a major Leaguer taken and
reincarnate owned by Starlight racing.
So the, you know, yet another, another ownership group that
knows how to get to the Winner's Circle.
There with reincarnate, Louis taught thoughts on reincarnate.
I think, I think Barry covered a lot of the, the things there.
Also think I thought we would see more of these transfer
horses in this race this year, because backwards actually, at
Santa Anita last year, he had to disband, his body wasn't even
there and I know he's not allowed to help out.
I'm making air quotes on TV right now, but he's there.
At least. And I mean, I thought it would
be different. I expected a few more of these
kinds of horses this year and I expected, frankly.
Reincarnate to be better than, is our results of it.
Yeah, I think that was a surprise that baffert horses
weren't as good as they usually are at this point.
I'm We heard there were like 20 well especially yeah.
I think from the fall. Yeah.
I think that they just kept losing.
That was really the problem they lost and then off the trail, you
know, one by one. Well, they'll be back, they'll
be back and now, weird about that.
Yeah, two year, old sales going on this week and and baffert has
fought the session leader all three days.
So the hips begin next year all right.
It number 17 there. Barry who's your final pick?
I'm going with Lord miles. Alright, winner this off of
recency because when I was at Tampa doing you know the track
feet over there for the Tampa Bay Derby.
I want to know part of this horse is horrible, that day,
didn't actually run that bad in all things considered.
And I think that was kind of a, you know, foreshadowing for his
Wood Memorial effort where he ran pretty.
Good, you know, it's just recent.
See that's that's really it. So Savvy Joseph and Paco Lopez
team up here and after the would win in the last hundred pointer
goes off at 17, so, there you go.
I do want to say if that horse wins, it will be the greatest
month, man, bun, and chest hair combination in the Winner's
Circle, ever at the Derby, and like, not close.
Saffy also really great radio interview by the way.
Dan was your final pick here. I'll take run Thunder.
Thunder Thunder. Yeah.
For no other reason than Kenny McPeak always seems at some
point to bring it a huge number for a horse and so it's this a
resource. I'll take, I'll take, I'll take
Thunder. Some vendors in a little bit of
buzz on the backside to for Canyon Peak.
So Louis what do you take them back in in the Risen star sort
of into Mischief? I mean if we're trying to fill
out our superfecta here that's the kind of horse that when they
pop in forth, all of a sudden that $1 superfecta looks a lot
better than it did. All right Kevin you got the
dubious honor of choosing between continue our and Rocket.
Can I'd like to take from my last pick Rich strike or cycle
of Mischief or King Russell or You know Mandarin hero or
somebody from this a e-list geez Rock and of course sorry.
Yeah. It's more maybe not quite enough
to get the win but could get the money and could be interested in
here. That was a cool two weeks at
Gulfstream. When Bill Mott and Junior
Alvarado, went back to back in the Pegasus and then in the Holy
bowl and of course, rocker came was the second part of that.
And so know if you can recapture that form and get back to what
he was, he was doing the best in the Holy Bowl.
Another, in a Mischief. I mean I just I don't know it
just Just I'm stunned. He's at 19 honestly.
I think that's the only part that's kind of.
I mean he just ran Force the last two races here in Four
Seasons paired up for some third rat, right?
Which is, which is, you know, the best we see is a 1 in here
so he can forward from that and yeah I'm surprised he's down
this low I'm not sure why we're sleeping on so hard.
I'm really surprised and almond chose continue our that's very
strange. I really think that if I'm stuck
with continue our I should get any also eligible or any horse
that comes in. I think that's fair.
I think I'll go that that's fair.
Okay listen continuing in card to life who saw the workout and
I'm not good. Maybe he's not a morning glory.
Maybe he saves his energy. Is an evening, horse is.
And if you really wanted to make an excuse, to the UAE Derby and
I guess you're really can't, but they ran one, two, three around
the track. He covered a little more ground
than everybody else. We talked about the inside being
good, but, ouch, he, he he didn't look good the other
morning and he's got it. Do a lot more.
And you gotta wonder how that impacts Derma soda Gotti because
they hate me and they are like they're they're right next to
each other every morning. They're just like you know you
want to be the star who's you know dragging along the maybe
the horse that maybe shouldn't be there.
I don't know. So yeah, like doing your work W
against a third grader while you're getting ready for the
right. And that's exactly right because
they're together, they're not more than 15 feet apart ever in
the mornings right now. So, Any, let's just overall, you
know, I think there's a lot of mediocrity or a lot of not
mediocrity, let's say parody in this field, you know, that
people need, people need to know that are sitting with us right
now. When we get to Derby, Mike hates
the three year old crop, it happens every single year and I
love Forte, okay? All right.
Okay, fine. Yeah.
I mean, it's like justify. A little bit different for me.
Like I love Forte. I think that tablet rice could
eventually be a pretty big star. I think that horse and then I
like practical move a lot. I think maybe a monolith might
be too far, but our amount of quarter might be too far and but
you know that horse comes into them all Races and has a nice
career there. And but we have like s like we
had Kings Barn go 13. I mean, that's that's a deep
that's deep. So I agree with that as far as
this group, yeah. All right, so everybody in the
room and the group, who do we think had the best draft?
Ill, man thinks he did. Of course, because he's Dan
element, and he's 65. I mean, II, I am so deep in
here. I mean, look at this price Kings
Barn, Skinner and continue our little bit and I'm absolutely
loaded. I couldn't be more pleased.
If you don't use my pics in your in your attic, I'm not your guy.
How you feeling about that draft?
You know what? I'll just keep my powder dry and
that comes come the first day in May, you know, I'm not a bolster
this guy. We'll see what happens.
Very, how was your day? I'm happy?
I'm happy right now. I like, I like my pics.
Yeah, yeah, I'm actually. More excited about having hit
show. So he maybe I'm just tipping my
hand a little bit. Okay, that's rich.
I was a pic right there, man. That's salts.
Go to everybody real quick on the right.
Column, 11 through 20 who's the most likely winner out of that
column? Dan Issel, I'm gonna go with
Skinner, I think that to me, to me, his race in the Santa Anita
Derby, was more impressive than the winners.
I really like the way that he was closing.
I think he'll love a mile and a quarter.
And so on that on that side, I'll go with Skinner.
How many women I knew? I was getting continue our so I
really like the force, but I think that Barry made a very
wise. Pick late in the game with
reincarnate. I don't think we've seen his
best yet. I think in the Arkansas Derby
that was a very, very fast pace. He was pressing it because I
gained a lot of Fitness out of that race.
And he's going to be close to the PACE and the Derby.
He'll be right in the thick of things when they turn for home
at a big price. I think Skinner's logical.
But if I had to go for sort of a, an under-the-radar horse on
the second. Second group we reincarnate, I
want you. Kevin Only two horses.
I would put on top in my my Wagers from the right column
Confidence Game and JC's Road, I bet I think their major players,
I think Jace is Road could sneak away with it and I think
Confidence Game is super life. So you like your pics on the
set? You like the second round picks.
All right guys? Yeah I'll bet you are.
I think Skinner, I think's going to ran a really good race, I
think that's an Anita Derby is a lot better than people.
Give him credit for and I think, practical move, Is actually a
lot better than people realize. Yeah.
I mean it's at that race would have been an eighth of a mile
longer Skinner wins that race, right?
So maybe urinating or Mandarin here?
Oh yeah I hear ya? Yep.
Yep. All right.
So what's the pace that he had to close in two and so, I mean,
yeah, I think there's a lot of things.
What's the hate on King's Barnes?
Seriously, like, wow, why? No, no mrs.
Want a slow race. I think that's it.
Yeah. I mean that depends on Pace,
right? Yeah.
And if you set it you can you can dominate it then.
Yeah you know I just don't think he gets a good setup here.
I mean, other than that, he's as talented as anybody in this
field, he probably could win it, you know, obviously, if you run
this race, let's say, 50 times he's probably going to win it
quite a few, but it's just 20 horses.
It's definitely a difficult task to go wider wire when you're
going to be under pressure. I guess barn and demonstrate the
synagogue, a who get those get those leads.
And they get that confidence and they have distance from the
field. I mean, those are horses I want
to fade, right? They just find something
different horses by some a different.
We have that sort of easy lead turning for home and pull away,
so he didn't feel any pressure, either the source of fuel
pressure. So I want to say this.
Well, well, Dan Issel, we have five minutes until the first
pick is announced with will love us.
So when your second Kentucky, quarterback big, number one
until last 25 years, you mispronounced his name?
The Gladys leftist, mercy of Kentucky will left us man.
That's an inside joke and I it is, by the way, a reminder, our
show horse racing Happy hour six days this week Monday, through
Saturday at Churchill Downs. First, three backside next three
in 322. At the top where we always are
if you happen to be out at the track in the 300 section, please
come give Mike a high-five and leave me alone.
We will be over. That's actually the only thing
you can actually do. I'm closest to the people.
We had to Shield Louis away from all his, you know, raving fans
and women trying to break the tomatoes?
I, yeah. They bring the tomatoes.
I do appreciate it. So, yeah, right.
I'm it is what it is. But all right, again, Dan Issel,
you find him 10 to noon with me on ESPN.
Any here in Louisville? You could find our guy Dan
Dillman as well at, drf tons of great videos there.
I'm sure Dan, you're doing a ton of stuff for Derby.
Yeah, lot of stuff for Derby on The Daily Racing Form.
YouTube page find me on Twitter, @jrfromptc and element Laurel
analysis. Every day in the drf and
chemical coming up for greatness.
I was gonna say Dan and I'll be hanging out on black-eyed.
Susan day with Dan, Issel on that Friday.
So, and Mike of course, and then Kevin on the notes team.
And what's that? Where do you stay?
Downtown, where do they? Where do they Shack?
You man, Candlewood Suites on Zorn Avenue.
No, I won't pick you up on the way.
What do you do for Kentucky Derby Day bury this year?
I'm not doing anything. I'm staying home.
My daughter's birthday is actually on Sunday, so we'll
probably go to Disney on Sunday. So they're a I can have For
weekend. That was a Florida Flex for no
reason out of Aries Spears. I see what happened there last
year. Is it Epcot for Preakness?
There it is, of course, is that one I was I was firing away all
day. Well Ratatouille, I like that.
All right, we're gonna pay the tab.
We're going to get out of here. This has been another episode of
the worst agent. Happy hour.
