All right, welcome to a very special afternoon edition DNC

Preview edition of the Horse Racing Happy Hour.

Oh, a little banking money. I like that.

What we were really hoping is that Steve would have come on

during the normal time and we could have just told everyone

that the DN CS actually recorded and then there.

Was the next after not happening.

Right now, it's all it's all, it's all false.

And not. I think we need to immediately

jump to the fact that Steve Kornacki's wearing a Northern

Michigan University Wildcats shirt.

I mean, I, I, these are high level.

If you, I mean, I used to go to hockey camp in the Upper

Peninsula, you have to be really tapped in to even know that

shirt exists. Steve The.

The Superior Dome, world's largest woody.

Dome. Oh, all right.

Such a football team is gonna try to win its first game in two

years this season. Yeah, it's not.

It's not good up there. Famous alums, by the way, Steve

Mariucci, football coach and Tom Izzo, head coach of basketball

at Michigan State University. There you.

Go who are related? Brothers in law are they?

Aren't they related? I think they're man No Mariucci

married into the no Crean married into the Harbaugh family

boy, I can't remember. What they're like boys are

really. Did she grew up together?

Yeah, I think that's what. It is, yeah.

Just roommates and stuff, yeah, yeah, right.

So. Yeah, one of them's a good coach

and one of them's comedies. Though, there you go.

I really wish that they would. Steve, what the hell were you

doing in the Upper Peninsula? That's my favorite place in the

world, I I. I love it.

I heard of this. Let's go.

There you go. My wife had a job offer right

out of school to take over a practice in Marquette.

We were legit this close to moving to Marquette, MI, of all

things. Yeah, it's.

A cool city. Oh man.

Love it there. You go, how about that there

the. World's collide.

Louie's all. I used to go to Lake State a lot

for hockey camp. It was great.

I love it up there. Yeah, yeah.

I know that you've talked to Louie a couple times since the

Preakness, but you've not talked to me and I've got to know what

happened with the trophy. I need to know the world.

If people don't know. We got a great picture of us

actually taking this 3D, this beautifully constructed 3D

printed, which Steve said that like it was the 1st 3D printed

object he'd ever seen. Is that was that correct?

Exactly. Figure out what it was.

And then somebody told me it's a 3D printer.

I finally know what these things do.

Yeah. Yeah.

He got the trophy for winning the Derby draft.

That's real. And, and what, what was the

journey of the trophy? And I'm assuming it's in some

garbage can now. So where?

Where is it now? I mean, there's, there's what I

hoped it would be and what it ended up being, because that's

like the first trophy I got since like a participation thing

probably 25 years ago. Very exciting moment for me.

And so I was like, I'll bring this back to my office.

I'm in my office now. It would have been right behind

me. I had a place set up and

basically just crumbled apart in the hotel room.

So I left it for the. We can blame Zach.

It's all Zach's fault. Zach for the 4 craftsmanship.

It's all Zach's fault, so. Yeah, thanks for buying a very

expensive 3 new printer and trying to contribute to the show

and in a meaningful way where we get a very nice picture next to

the the winner's circle of public.

O at least yes, the picture we can have forever.

Picture having all these guys, yeah.

That's right. Yeah.

We'll send you the picture so you can have that up instead of

the trophy. And then you can always look at

Mike and Louie and like, be like, oh, I.

Guess I gotta save somewhere. It's a no.

It's a good to keep. OK.

All right. Well, Steve, we're heading into

the traverse and obviously, I mean essentially the last two

restricted big three-year old races coming up in the next

month here. We get the traverse, we get the

Pennsylvania Derby. We're hearing, you know,

Stronghold Dragoon Guard for that Pennsylvania Derby.

We get Torpedo Anna in this field here.

I kind of wanted to open just kind of generally speaking

about, you know, this three-year old class itself.

I think door knocks at the top. I think it's pretty clear he's

at the top of this. I and Mike and I were talking

right before the show may have a chance to cement that spot,

frankly, for the rest of the year if he's able to win this

weekend and the traverse against this collection of characters,

if you will. Where are you on the three-year

old class? Do you agree with me?

Disagree. Yeah, I think it's about right.

I think it's it's basically undisputed that right now as

we're having this conversation, Dornik is number one.

But I think, you know, the traverse can can be the race

that kind of, you know, resets the pecking order here, you

know, because I look, if Torpedo Anna ever got this done, you

know, or for that matter, you know, look, what if fierceness

comes and runs that monster race?

You know, I got the win in the gymnandy.

But what if it's not just the win here?

What if it's a a runaway? You know, it's like we saw in in

some of his other races. So I fierceness could still get

back in there. You know, a couple of

opportunities. You didn't.

Hey, look, Sierra Leone, you know, so close.

Sierra Leone wins this one. I think he's a contender again,

you know? Just saying, the only thing I'm

going to do is put that place bet on Sierra Leone.

So we'll come in second, all right.

You have a feeling about that, Mike?

Do you have a strong feeling about who the top three-year old

is right now? Well, we've talked about it.

I mean, I think it it has to be door knocks in the driver's

seat. And I still think he's very much

disrespected. And people are like, like, I

don't think anyone believes he's the best 3 year old.

But they almost have to feel like they have to give it to him

for what he's done. And they're just poo pooping on

the fact that he, you know, won the Haskell and won the Belmont.

So it's like, you know, and and he was not great, but not

terrible in the Derby. And like he was awful.

And, you know, I know we always talk about a top ten finish in

the Derby's good and he was just outside of that.

So I don't know, I mean, I I look at it and I just think that

it's got to be door knock right now.

And, you know, I still feel like there's one of these late

shooters and that, you know, I were talking a little bit about

corporate power before the show, too.

It's like, is there going to be that year like we had with

Airgate where Airgate basically came out of nowhere, won the

Travers and then just won everything for the next year and

a half and. Yeah.

What if it's unmatched wisdom like you mentioned?

Yeah. Like, could it, could it be

another horse in this field or in this group that jumps up and

does it? And you know what?

The other thing we don't have yet is a couple years ago,

Steve, when you and I first had Eclipse of Eclipse votes and,

and Mike, of course, we were in the same NTWAB class that I

voted for Modern Games because I just thought, you know, winning

a grade one against Open Company in Canada and then winning a

Breeders' Cup race was the best thing that a three-year old did.

I was hoping we'd have another horse like that this year on the

at least on the colt side 'cause then I think it'd make it a lot

easier. But listen, Louie, if City of

Troy comes over here and wins and it's impressive and when's

the Breeders Cup race? I'm I'm not a I'm not opposed to

taking a week 3 year old class and saying, dude, this horse is

by far better than everyone else and and putting City of Troy in

that list. Yeah, maybe it's just, you know,

one race in North America to win the Eclipse would be a little

more difficult, I think. But at least with modern games

there were a couple of races. But yeah, I mean, Steve, outside

of that, is there someone in this race that you think can,

you know, outside of say Adornik that could actually really is it

a, is it fierceness that has the best chance to become three-year

old of the year by winning the Travers?

I I kind of think so, because people will return to the early

height and I mean, you just, you can't erase the memory of the

two year old, you know, of the, of the juvenile last year and,

and some of those just monster, monster numbers.

And I think if, if fierceness can put up again, I'm kind of

thinking not just a win, but you know, and one O 8 buyer,

something like that. You know, I, I think a lot of

that comes right back into place.

Yeah, good stuff right there. So I mean, Louis, you want to do

a little bit of the manscape breed, then we'll get into the.

Oh, Manscape breed, how about that?

Yeah, no, just a reminder, great friends over at

What is it? My God, we we talked about this

last week. Beard oil or beard conditioner.

Which one are you using? I'm a conditioner.

Yeah, I'm a beard conditioner. Got it.

OK, How about that? OK.

Yeah, Steve, these are things you and I don't have to worry

about. So there you.

Go give me give me 3 weeks and I might get some stubble so OK.

I'm with you buddy. There it is.

I'm just. Like there's something common

after. Tuesday, November.

I wanted to make it look. I want you to look like you've

been through the ringer, like you've been doing like a 72 hour

vendor and stubble and just. I'm overwhelmed trying to dig.

Yeah, yeah, right. Yeah, I just feel like, who

cares at the end? Oh.

Man, how are you? What does the Commission

Thursday look like for Steve Kornacki?

Like what does your? What does your day look like?

Well, yeah, yeah, we're, I'm going to be on sometime around

11:30 tonight. We'll see how much they keep to

how much they keep to schedule. So, you know, we do get some,

some downtime during the day. They didn't send me to Chicago.

I get to be here in my office. So I won't say I don't.

Doesn't keep me from peeking at the Saratoga program every now.

Do some handicapping. I like it.

OK, All right, let's. Do it.

Yeah. All right.

Well, let's see. We're going to start again.

It is a big day. Five stakes races, two Breeders'

Cup Challenge races, including the race we're going to start

with, which is Race 9, the the Resorts, the Resorts World

Casino, Sword Dancer. It's a Grade 1A mile and a half

on that inner turf course. Louis, let's go with you.

Let's Who did you like in this one?

I mean, fun one, despite the shorter field, I thought in

that, you know, we've got a more American based horse and silver

nod of this one. And then, of course, you get a

horse in measured time that's only run once here.

But did do a really, you know, showed up in a huge way at

Saratoga in the Manhattan. And I think if if you want to

look at this race and try to get as skinny as possible, I think

you're gonna have to choose between one of those two or go

to the other four essentially. So if you're trying to maximize

a pick five or something like that.

Is it a pioneering spirit of Grand Sonata, a Soldier Rising,

etcetera? I have to do to do I have the

two on top here? I do think Measure Time is the

best horse here. We just watched Charlie

Applebee, Bill Buick pick off the Arlington Million.

I think we'll see a similar thing happen here in the mile

and a half Sword Dancer. He's never gone this far, but he

looks super comfortable going the mile and three sixteenths

and the man and last out and so I do expect that he'll come back

to that form for sure. Silver not in the second spot

here for me. I think my third horse in this

field by the way is Grants and out of the sixth horse coming

out of that United Nations was the horse that made the run at

get smoking and I thought ruined all of my tickets.

And so if he puts back that, you know that if he puts that

performance back up with an added eighth of a mile, I think

you know that's he's going to make it interesting and he could

be the second horse in the exacto.

So an exacto play here that might be fun is actually play

the two and the four in the first spot and then only the 6th

in the second spot. Just see if he comes running

late and you can catch him in there.

All right, Steve. Yeah, I, I mean, look, it's,

it's one of the Applebee's not I was going back and forth.

I I landed on measured time too, thinking there's maybe some more

potential here that we haven't quite seen.

You know, if you're watching that Manhattan, the word, I

think in the IT was wandering in the stretch.

You know, the horse was it took a minute there to kind of get

going, but you know, but when he did, holy smokes.

So, you know, I kind of think there's, there's a little bit

more upside there. The distance of bit of a

question gives me a little concern, but I'm kind of

thinking I get more of a price here.

I mean, we'll see. Not not much more, but maybe a

little bit more. And yeah, I'm just thinking in

terms of, like you're saying, in terms of a horizontal sequence.

Pick five here. Yeah.

I probably going to lead off just by just by singling measure

time. And then maybe there's

something. Yeah.

I was tempted to just do like a hammer, a straight measured time

soldier rising exacta just because he's Mr. Mr. 2nd Place.

That or you know, you just do, you know, measured time silver

knot Soldier rising straight try see if I can get that.

But you know, I was I wanted to try to make some kind of

argument a case in my head for like soldier rising actually

finally delivered. I just I can't.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I know that, you

know, in this case, you know, the Buick is typically

Applebee's #1 rider, and in this case, Measure time's been

overseas. It's been really easy for Buick

to ride him and for Flavian to ride Silver Knot.

But Buick has run Silver Knot in the past, right?

So like, is there anything to at all that you all look at from

that jockey saying, hey, I'm putting Buick on measure time

and not Silver Knot, but he's gonna put his number one as #1 I

mean, it's a real easy thing I guess to keep it the way it's

been. It's obviously been working so.

I think the part here that that that isn't an angle here, Mike,

is only that these riders have been aboard for all of their

previous wins, right? So the last three wins were both

horse the same jock. So Flavian's been aboard three

times, he's won three and these are not low level races.

He's winning the Elkhorn, he's winning the Mana War, he won the

Bowling Green. These are graded high level

graded, you know, two turn longer turf races.

Flavian's been able to get him to the front or near the front

and win those races. That's obviously the tack

they'll take on Saturday. And no, Bill Buick's been aboard

this horse since his second race of his life.

So I think it's a little less of a jockey angle here, but I I

understand. The question That's not true.

He was 54 races back. He was on him.

Who was? Buick was on him five races

back. All on Silver Knot, Sure.

Yeah, I'm talking about, I'm talking about measured time.

He's been on every. Oh, yeah.

Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yes, yes.

Sorry on all measured times except for the.

First one, yeah, except for his maiden race.

Yeah. Yeah.

OK. I don't know what it is about

today, but. And Louis, you told me like,

like at noon today, the allergies in the Ohio Valley hit

for me. Mine was the last two days so

apparently I've adjusted. I mean.

Holy cow. It's bad here.

Yeah. Come on, come on.

You know. Where there's no allergies

Marquette, MI. I got it.

I got it. I got to disagree.

It was brutal. Brutal.

That's great. Oh.

Man All right, we're moving on then to race 10, which is the

Grade 1 battery and a handicap. This is a 7 furlong, one turn

Sprint. It is actually for the the feeds

into the filly and Mare Sprint for the Breeders Cup about 3

year olds in up Phillies half $1,000,000 here on the dirt.

And Steve, where did you land on this one?

So yeah, I guess thinking about this couple different ways,

again, I'm kind of thinking about this and talking about it

horizontally. Pick five.

You know, with kind of that in mind, I'll probably, I'll use

Bava defensively here, you know, just in case I need to get

through. But I think there's a

vulnerability here and I have kind of two two thoughts here on

how to attack. And I guess my main pick is

going to be sill, it is Silla. I hear Silla, Silla, it's Silla.

I think I think you know what I'm talking about.

I'm going to go with Silla. I like the cutback, my own 16th

to seven. I think when you look closely at

the past performances, there's AI think one turn might be the

the secret sauce here. I think Mott, you know, I just

kind of I like Mott's been kind of on A roll here.

I think this is a good spot in, in terms of the pace too.

I think potentially just gets the, you know, ability to come

from off of it potentially with a lot of speed, because I think

you're going to have, you know, money's gold, you know, from the

outside. And, and just I think there's AI

think there's a, a good set up potentially there for a horse

cutting back for a good trainer. So I, I, I like Scylla and the

other one that I'll use probably in an A category a column would

be money's gold. I just think it's a wild card.

Who's going to be at a price who has shown explosive ability in

the past? Very, very inconsistent, but it

is kind of there. I'm afraid, you know, society

has so much speed. I'm afraid they kind of get, you

know, hooked together and, and, and blow it all up.

And I, I just, I think I don't want society, especially not

what I think the price is going to be.

I think you get a real price on money's gold.

Might be willing to take a shot just with, with all the

potential that's been there before.

So those are going to be my two kind of main plays.

Louis. The other part with Vava, she's

over two lifetime at at at Saratoga.

The last two times since she's been first up in the form cycle,

she's lost right. So this is this is coming off

the layoff a little bit here. So I mean, if you wanted to have

reasons to play against her, that would be it.

Steve. I simply don't see the other

speed that's gonna be able to go with her in this race.

I have society in the second spot here.

Ranwell in that Chicago behind her in Positano Sunset.

Do you have a concern at all? Steve?

I wanted to ask you and I and I'm glad you brought up Silla

first man. Three-week turn around in a trip

from Del Mar. So I think there's two ways to

look at that. You could just look at it on

paper and go three weeks I'm out.

Or man, Bill Mott must know something here, right?

That's that's I'm taking the 2nd the 2nd test.

Yeah, right. Yeah.

No, I think that's reasonable. Yeah, go ahead.

No, yeah. And that's, you know, I'm just

thinking, look to me, you know, we've seen society go, you know,

with Baba before. You know, I, I, I, the thing I

looked at was society too, is I was just looking at that really

dissuaded me because I, I again, I was really looking for a vava

alternative. Here is you got three wins for

society at 7 furlongs. But when you look closely, two

of them are Charlestown. So it's a two turn 7 furlong.

And then the other one's Ellis last June, June 23, when I think

there was just a massive, massive speed favoring bias

there, if I'm remembering right. So I kind of look at that.

I'm like, well, I, you know, two turn one.

You know, I I don't, you know, I don't, I don't know that the one

turn 7 furlong is actually it for society.

So that's, you know, one of the things that that pushed me off

there. I think an important thing to

mention here is that a horse named Shita Booty's in this race

and you don't get to say things like Shita Booty very often.

So I just wanted to say Shita booty.

How about that Shita? Booty shita booty.

The other chat Brown, how about that?

It is the half million dollar grade 14 go.

We're going to stay 7 furlongs on the dirt and this is going to

be the four the four year olds in up and of course we get baby

Yoda. I love my Star Wars puns.

I love all my Star Wars horses. Baby Yoda, man, just trying to

hold on six years old. Keep on keep on trucking.

Maybe finding some form here recently.

I know it wasn't great in the last race, but one his previous

two starts in 2024. Louis, I'm I'm going to guess

where you're going to go with this.

I I think Baby Yoda's Mega live here.

I actually do because that horse is really good at Saratoga. 4

for seven's never an accident. Obviously the 114 buyer speed

figure at the track was a long time ago because it isn't even

on our form. But this is a horse that runs a

lot and he either wins or he doesn't.

And so we you're hoping that you get the winner type that we've

seen at Saratoga before, the true North and not the one that

we got last out in the Vanderbilt with where I said,

don't bet on Naka. Tell me that horse is coming

back from the Arabian Peninsula and then it goes ahead and wins.

I do like to move to Tyler FA Leone here.

I think that's actually a legitimate a legitimate upgrade

here from Eric Consell. I talked to Tyler this morning

and he said the best thing about riding Baby Yoda is that Yoda is

his wife's favorite Star Wars character.

So there you go. Oh nice.

How about that? That's inside baseball, as the

kids would say, But I have the six on top here.

Mullican horses, 3 for three this year.

I also think Cali Ostro's interesting in this spot.

We watched that horse go back to one turn mile at Churchill, last

out in the Hanson under. Flavian Pratt picks up Jose

Ortiz here, who's been aboard the horse before in an allowance

win, going two turns over that shorter course at Keeneland over

the mile on the 16th of that first to that first finish line

there at the track after a very, very long layoff.

That horse was off for September until April and has come back

1/2 of his three this year. Sri Devo doing a really, really

good job placing her horses as well.

Instincts, company. And then I have Baby Yoda third.

I really do. I think the horse, especially

because of the record at the track, has real shot.

So I went 684 here. Steve I.

I, I'm with you kind of on Baby Yoda.

I, I think definitely going to end up on my ticket somewhere

because you look at that, there's too many.

There's a couple of those. Saratoga.

You know, performances they're like, well, there might be

something to the horse for course here, although I think

when you kind of to me at least when you kind of look back to

the true north, you know, back Belmont weekend, there was to

me, there was I know there's some debate over this seemed

like a track really did kind of favor the horses that were up

front and I think that might have really aided baby Yoda that

day. So I'm a little bit, you know,

skeptical. Maybe maybe that was kind of it

was aided a little bit there. I like I and I'm, I'm going to

take a shot against Mullikin here completely.

I and the, I think Mullikins kind of had it easy.

And I think this race might be, you know, this is, this is a

step up. And I think there's, there's

competitors here, you know, he hasn't faced before.

And I, what I'm intrigued by, I think are two prices.

The first one is #5 run Classic, you know, and this is so again,

I don't think has has actually faced some good competition.

But what what sticks out to me, I'm just looking at, I have a

note here. What sticks out to me is 7 races

at a a Sprint distance in the career.

Four wins in those seven, you know, four of the five wins in

the career of the horse have come in a Sprint distance.

So I think when you start to just look at that, I, I think

there's a, there's a big difference there.

And I'm just looking at, you know, some of the competition

and, you know, some of those speed figures and I think just

absolutely kind of fits here belongs.

I think it's going to be a price.

And then the other one that I'm interested in is Sev is #7

Angkor and a couple things there is Phil Bauer, who's just been

absolutely on fire as a trainer here and, you know, just looking

again, like had a bad performance.

What 2 back and who's he running against Skelly?

You know, but I I I think there's a, you know, kind of

breaking from there has the ability to, you know, kind of

get probably see a stalking trip and at a big price.

And so I'm interested, except I'm a little scared by the over

six lifetime at the distance. But I kind of think Mulliken is

vulnerable here. He's going to be a very low.

You know, the odds are going to be extremely low.

So I'm looking for a a bit of a score and those are the two

places I'm going to look for it. And probably toss Baby Yoda in

somewhere too. And if anybody is wondering,

yes, Gun Pilot can win this race.

Yes, of course. That's you.

I thought you were gonna go. For sure.

Oh, OK. Got it.

Yeah. No, of course that horse can win

this race. Yeah.

Christian Torres isn't time to ride this horse, I think.

I think he's got a legit shot. No one was catching baby, baby

ODA in that true north. He flew off the page there, you

know, 21 and 444108114 and change.

I mean, he was flying that day over the 6 1/2 furlongs and so.

But right before that, of course, wins the Grade 1

Churchill Downs. By the way, Christian Torres,

first grade one. This would be his second if they

were able to go back-to-back here in the four go.

But yeah, I I think he absolutely has a shot as well.

And I think the true question about Baby Yoda, should they

change his name to Grogu, which the answer, of course, is yes.

Come on, Louis, you don't like this.

I'm laughing, I'm laughing. I just, I can't.

There's so many. There's only so much Star Wars

support I can give because there's already enough in the in

the world that you don't need my help to.

That's all I want is. Are you a Talladega Knights fan?

Do you like Ricky Bobby? I think Will Ferrell's movies

have aged more poorly than most comedies.

Oh, OK. I think at the time they were

very funny, but if I go back and watch a Sandler right now on a

Saturday just to be stupid. You're still.

It's still. Funny.

Wow. It's always funny.

If I watch Anchorman now, I don't think it's funny.

Oh nice. I.

Think it's kind of a miss. I like Steve.

Better than that, brothers. Yeah, I don't know.

I haven't watched Step Brothers in a really long time.

OK, We're not even getting Steve's opinion here and we're

just talking back and forth about comedies.

I mean the. One the one Will Ferrell movie

that I think has held up. If you ever saw it, it was

underappreciated at the time. Was kicking and screaming.

The soccer coach movie. And I think that was so.

Well, I was going to just say like the baby, the Yoda saying,

you know, do or do not, there is no try.

It's basically the same thing as saying if you're not first,

you're last. It's the same.

That's. Right.

That's right. Yeah, that's right.

That's that's B Deoda. That's right.

Yeah, we're going to move on to the 12th race, though.

Enough Star Wars we're going to. We're going to stay at 7

furlongs, man. I mean, let's just keep going at

7 furlongs. It's a 7 furlong kind of day.

And this again on the dirt. Allen Jerkins Memorial, 3 old

horses here. Steve, where did you land in

this race? Worth mentioning before we get

going, book em. Dano is running at Saratoga, not

at Charlestown. Yep.

OK, which surprised me but but wow, it only makes this harder

and and what I mean this is. This is solid field.

Yeah, no, I mean, I spent, I spent a lot of time here and I'm

still, you know, obviously very uneasy with what I'm going to

say. But like I looked at there are

there's kind of three here that I'm really interested in.

I guess this is in order. I think my top pick is Prince of

Monaco and just kind of looking back at that Woody Stephens, you

know, almost almost caught book em Dano at the end there and had

kind of an eventful trip was not good.

You know, it's not good getting out of the gate.

And, you know, I, I think to come that close against book em

Dano, who had a much better trip, I think, and I'm looking

at 4:00 to 1:00 on the morning line at least, you know, and in

this field, that's probably about what you're going to get.

I think that's that's great. So I I like Prince and Monaco.

I think just as you know, just a better trip could make all the

difference right there. I like Speakeasy.

It's a huge step up. This is the number two.

It's a huge step up. But I remember watching the

allowance win a couple weeks ago or about a month ago now, I

guess. And what I wrote down was a huge

rally into blue fractions and just seeing obviously in a race

like this, how much speed is going to be and just, you know,

an ability there I think to come from a little bit off of it.

And yeah, it's a huge step up, but I think it's worth a shot.

A triple digit buyer in the first race too.

And the last one is this is my little little knee who's, you

know, the 11 horse here, almost beat Book em Dano at Monmouth.

And I'm saying you're going to get 3 to one on Book Em Dano and

you're going to get maybe 20 to one on little knee.

I'll take the 20 to one. All right.

I mean, there's several horses in here that are super

interesting, so. It is fascinating because I I do

think this one of this one of all of them, you're either

grabbing Bokam Dano or you're grabbing all of them.

I really do feel that way. I think you if you if you told

me you were spreading in this race, I would totally believe

you. But this might be the spot then,

Steve, just because I think a lot of people are going to have

to spread here in the jerkins that it might be the spot where

you just get you get if you wanted to be aggressive.

This is the race to get aggressive, frankly, right.

And so, you know, the other option, I think is the very

first race of this sequence, play against Silver Knot, play

against the Applebee's essential.

Like if you wanted to be aggressive, aggressive, that

would be the other spot. This race is the one where you

would get a lot skinnier, frankly, if you wanted to be

aggressive. But I'm with Steve here, man.

Like little DI couldn't look away.

A horse was excellent in in July down at down at Monmouth.

And then you say, oh, he wants to book him Dano by a nose.

Yeah, book him Dano. Well, the Woody Stevens by you

know, half a length over Prince Monaco too.

You know, if we started holding legs against horses, idiomatic

wouldn't have been the the older dirt dirt female of the year

last year, that kind of stuff. So I'm I'm a little less

interested in that, but I literally have all written in my

my handicapping. I mean, Otto the conquers 20 to

one here and that horse ran really well behind raging

torrent in the Maxfield last time.

And I don't think that horse has a huge shot here, but I I that

horse is really good man. And you know, like a Jefferson

street here, for example, 2 back in a 6 1/2 for a long allowance

and and Saratoga runs it in 114 to change.

I mean, it's just there's so much speed in this race, so many

quality horses. I really think the break is

gonna be huge. And then whoever's in that first

two or three group is is going to win this race.

The last one I'll mention because this sometimes, Steve,

we talked about Belmont bringing back Asil on on short rest

domestic product here, man, this is a Kentucky Derby horse and

since then has gone from that mile and a quarter to a mile and

a 16th and last time out to a mile in the Dwyer over one turn

at Aqueduct. Maybe Chad Brown thinks he's

found something here where the seven furlongs is long enough

for him to be interested and keep pace.

But I, I do wonder man, I, I think if I were going for my

first level, first tier, not book em Dano to win this race, I

think I would go to domestic products of all things.

The biggest tragedy in this race is that Timberlake is five to

one in the morning line. That is ridiculous.

That horse should be like 15 to one.

He was really good in the Haskell for the first six

furlongs. If that race is 7 furlongs long,

he might win it. Well, we'll see, I think.

It screams all race or get real aggressive for sure.

All right. We're going to go through the

field here on the traverse and we'll say get in the canoe or

stay out of the canoe. I don't know in the canoe or out

of. The canoe.

Canoe talk. Let's go.

All right, Canoe. Talk.

Let's go. Are you are you happy?

I'm going with that. You know, I know you like your

little going through the fields in the canoe or out of the

canoe. You like it.

Are the you like? You know the hell yeah, I'll

know. Yeah, no, this is great.

Yeah, no, this is fantastic. I love.

This the great one, Travers mile and a quarter known as the

Summer's Derby, $1.25 million was all that I could put up for

the purse, but they took it. So here we go.

We're going to go through the field.

And you know what? I don't want to start with the

one horse. I want to start, man.

All right, we'll start with the one Brian Hernandez and Kenny

Mcpeak are going to run it back with Torpedo Anna, who has been

just absolutely spectacular in her three-year old season, 4 for

four, obviously winning the Kentucky Oaks, the Acorn and the

CCA Oaks, all grade one races. Now she's going to challenge the

boys. Is she in the canoe or out of

the canoe, Steve? Out.

Out of the canoe. Out of the canoe.

I, I mean, look, my heart is all, it's a great story.

I mean, I just, I'm excited it's happening.

I want to see it. And I mean, I, you know, look,

if I, if I've got some kind of a big score on the line, which is

very, very rare, but if I ever did, you know, and I lost her,

I'd be upset. But on some level it would be

nice to see this happen. But I, I, I mean, I'm just prove

me wrong. I think she's just going to be a

little too slow. I think there's a lot it's, I'm

not quite sure on the tactics here, just looking at some of

these horses. But I think overall, it's just

going to add up to a ton of a ton of speed and the

possibility, I think that maybe it's just a bit, it's just a bit

too much for her here. Louis.

Man, I'm straddling the canoe, which is not good for for

podcasting or radio or. Anything.

It's a girl horse. Here's the girl horse and a boy

horse. There you are.

So I really do wonder if if she beat up on a really bad

three-year old class of Phillies because power squeeze goes out,

wins the Alabama with a 90 buyer.

I mean, ain't nobody winning the the traverse with a 90 buyer.

And so I, I wonder, I think she's a fine horse for sure.

Good job reading this one for five grand and then winning a

bunch of money. I mean, all of it.

It's all fantastic. But like Steve said, story's

fantastic. But I, I think the 90 buyer

coming back on power squeeze turned me off in a pretty

significant way. I'm not gonna lie.

So I'll go out of the canoe for this one.

I don't wanna be on like Steve. I think it's a cool story.

I think Mcpeak making this Philly available for people to

like visit in the mornings and stuff is fantastic.

Like that's, that's just, that's just good stuff.

And and I appreciate that, you know, that he's doing that, that

she has the temperament for that all those kinds of things.

But I'll go out of the canoe for this one.

All right, So I'm going to ask two questions real quick before

we move on. Number one, she obviously would

have just Romfield in the Alabama.

So you like the decision at least to try it, right?

I mean, were you all in the? Decision to go I.

Don't I? I don't like trying it against

the boys. As a three-year old, I think

you, you rack up, you get all the checks you can against the

three-year olds. There's No 3 year old horse of

the year. There's a three-year old Philly

of the year. There's a three-year old colt.

I would have stayed in the Alabama if I I at least my brain

tells me that now. I don't own nice horses at all.

I don't own horses at all either.

But I I would have tried the Alabama, I think.

Steve. I I, I, I like the move.

You're not promised tomorrow. We know this in horse racing.

You know, you think the Philly's in great form.

You look at the three-year old male class and you say I don't

see any world beaters there. Sure, take a shot.

Does it does something to Louis's point, though, and this

is kind of where I was trying to go, Is it one of those things

where she's her like her confidence is rolling, rolling,

rolling, that it could backfire and and maybe cost him the

Breeders Cup distaff? I don't know about that part,

but you know, for example, like there's talk of Adair Manor

running in the Pacific Classic. I think that's perfect, right?

She's been through it. She's been through a bunch of

races. She knows what she is.

And, and so to your point, Mike, maybe with, you know, with

Torpedo Anna, that could backfire.

I, I, I think less just because she has won so many races.

She knows what the the winner's circle looks like.

OK, now what about her? Her.

She's morning line 3 to one. Yeah.

Is it gonna go up or down? I think that's about right,

actually. I don't think she'll be the

favorite, but I think that's about right.

OK. All right.

Very appropriately. The horse coming out of the the

two spot is Sierra Leone, since Sierra Leone loves to come in

second. Actually, I'd, you know, I'd say

that and it's he's won two, came in second twice and came in

third once in 2024. It's just been a little bit.

Sierra Leone's the horse everyone loves obviously and

just everyone thinks once this horse figures it out, he's going

to he's the most talented horse out there.

Is this the one in the canoe or out of the canoe on Sierra Leone

for Flavian Pratt and Chad Brown?

In for me, I'm falling for it. I, I, you know, it's, it's we we

talked about soldier rising earlier, the perennial, you

know, second place finisher. I, I, you know, Sierra Leone,

Sierra Leone could get there eventually, but I'm, I, I still

think I buy into this horse can figure it out.

And I think what I see here I think is all that speed.

I just, I think this is really going to set up the right way

for Sierra Leone finally to get this done.

And if Sierra Leone does not get it done here, then I'm saying

this is the new soldier rising. But I, I kind of think this is

it. And, and honestly, it's one of

these I'm, I'm looking at this just talking about it in terms

of the, the Pick 5I. I, I, I may end up just singling

Sierra Leone here and, and, you know, say, spreading the race

like the, the, you know, we were just talking about and, and take

some other shots earlier, but I, I kind of, I just have this

feeling this is the time. Mike, do you remember a horse

that won the Louisiana Derby, ran second in the Kentucky

Derby, ran second in the Preakness, and then came back

and won the Traverse? Do you remember that horse Mike

Wasn't too long ago? Gun Runner.

His name was Epicenter and I really hated that horse.

He really bothered me. I really thought he was a second

uh, for life. And then he came back and he won

the Dandy and he won the traverse and so he's definitely

in the boat here. I think this is the kind of

horse in in Sierra Leone that can come out and win this kind

of race and then set up, frankly, as one of the absolute

must watches in the Breeders Cup Classic.

There's the Epicenter always second.

You're damn right that's how he rolled.

And so, you know, eventually people came to me like what

should I bet on this week? And I was like epicenter place.

Just do it. Like it's like you'll get your

money back, like it's gonna happen.

So just do that. But no, he's in the boat for me.

I think Sierra Leone's got a legit shot here.

I mean, he's almost guaranteed to hit the board, right?

So you got to put him in the boat from that standpoint.

So the three horses, very interesting to me.

This is the horse that is 3 for three, Chad Brown, Irad Ortiz,

of course, so another Chad Brown.

Flavin's been riding this horse forever.

Flavin's of course going to stay on Sierra Leone.

Irad's going to get them out here on unmatched Wisdom as he

takes his step up into great at stakes company.

Is this potentially the new shooter that could be taking on,

you know, this three-year old class and, and who and who knows

it's the next air gate. We'll have to wait and see.

In the boat, out of the boat. Steve on unmatched wisdom.

I'm out of the boat, but I with trepidation.

The other Chad being one of the the factors the but I I my case

for Sierra Leone is my case against unmatched wisdom.

It's here's the speed, here's here's who's going to really

help Chad set up the hot pace that gets Sierra Leone home in

the end. It's going to be very

interesting on that because you you add Torpedo Anna and this

horse to basically a door knock and fierceness is the only ones

who wanted to go before that. So it's going to be really

interesting. Oh, and you got to batten down.

Who's going to want to go as well?

I mean, it's it is a loaded field.

I mean, it's essentially half and half.

Very few stalkers in this field. Someone's going to have to stalk

in this race. Someone's going to have to

figure it out. Wisdom is in the boat for me,

man. I think he's really interesting.

I think that Curlin showed that he could do the two turns.

It'd be just fine. He was pretty geared down at the

end there. Not the company that we're

talking about here, of course, because Corporate Power was

second in that race, but I think we're going to see another move

up from this horse. Does he win?

Fair question. I don't know, but you know, no,

Lasix last time out was just fine.

Stays in that kind of medication route.

This is a really good angle for Chad Brown as well, getting

giving horses about about 5 weeks, 5 1/2 weeks between

races. So I do look for unmatched

wisdom. I think he hits the board here.

15 and one that's on corporate power, the horse that Louis just

mentioned, who lost unmatched wisdom last time out by a

length. So what about in the boat or out

of the boat on the corporate power?

I think if it were going to be, oh, sorry, go see no.

Go ahead, go ahead. I was gonna say if we were gonna

be a wet day, I think I'd actually be leaning on this

horse. I think corporate power has

shown that he's willing to go in the slop, in the mud, whatever.

He was really good at Pimlico when we were there, all three of

us. How about that?

Making bad trophies and handing them out.

And so the I, no, I, I think if it were on a wetter day, a

wetter week at Saratoga, which of course at Saratoga could just

spot shower on us for no reason. But I'll go ahead and say out of

the boat. I think unmatched wisdom showed

that he's just a little bit faster and if the corporate

powers going to try to be amongst the closers in this

race, he's not as good at closing as Sierra Leone's.

I'm I'm in the boat here. Just again, I'm, I'm a broken

record, but just see, the closer I, I, I think, yes, I take

Sierra Leone over corporate power, but I, I think corporate

power has the right style here And just in that curling was it,

you know, was sort of a bit all over the place to see the

stretch there. That's overstating it.

But you know, I, I think there's room to improve there and I like

the style here. So the idea of hitting the

board, especially at a price I'm I'm, I'm, put me in the canoe.

Batten down I guess some of us are surprised to come in 3rd in

the gym. Dandy is going to take this run

here and it's going to be 20 to one.

Junior Alvarado aboard Bill Mott, the trainer.

Batten down, The winner of the Ohio Derby.

In the canoe or out of the canoe?

Steve in the Traverse. I think I'm out of the canoe

here, you know, Yeah, I was just talking up Mott a few minutes

ago. I, I just don't think the horse

is fast enough. So I'm yeah, I'm looking

elsewhere here. Yeah, I think the fast enough

comment is the right comment and I do think this is the kind of

horse as we get into a new era where there are more two turn

dirt races for older mares, males, excuse me, at the

fairgrounds place like Churchill Downs.

I think you're gonna see him again next year in those kinds

of races. So in the New Orleans Classic,

the Fairgrounds, whatever it might be, more at the Grade 3

level. I think we'll see him again next

year, maybe in some smaller stakes this fall.

He might actually might be a really good candidate for the

Clark at the end of the year. He kind of sets up that way

'cause he's not a Breeders' Cup horse, but he is a 2 Turner.

Maybe that field comes up a little light.

You see Bill Mott drop him in there.

But I think we'll see his best running later on.

Even though he is a, you know, he's a tappet.

It's not a cheap breeding job. And there's going to be, you

know, Juddmont probably tried to push him into the breeding shed

at some point, but without a couple of grade threes at least,

I'm not sure that that'll happen.

So I'll go out of the out of the canoe on this one.

But I do think, I think down the line we'll see a better running

from him. All right now, Steve Louise,

he's making a very dangerous choice right now.

He is outside in Anchorage, KY, and we're getting ready to talk

about Anne Marie. And he's going to have to say

that Anne Marie doesn't have a shot in this race in Anchorage.

And the people might hear that and they could revolt against

them in Anchorage. If he's so, he's just going to

have to by. Neighbor.

Not by neighbor. Whit Beckman, Not Whit.

Oh, man. Yeah, our kids go to school

together. How about that?

Anna Marie, 20 to one with Tyler aboard here for the first time.

Actually Tyler aboard. Whit Beckman is the trainer and

I think actually Beau Wit's brother and my brother right now

are Napa. I should probably know that for

sure, but my moms watching my brothers kids, I'm pretty sure

he's with which brother. So the fact that which brothers

not even going to the Travers right there tells me that the

Marie is out of the boat, Steve out of the boat or in the boat

wit we love you and we you're getting all the local support

and we would be so excited if you wanted.

To be wrong? Yes, that's totally correct.

Please. Please prove us wrong.

Please get a $700,000 check. Yeah.

Should I, should I just say yeah in the boat to save your

relationship? You're the politics guy, not us,

man. Yeah.

Oh, man. I'm out of the boat on this one.

I, I just, I don't, I don't know what to make of this horse

because he's a good horse, man. He just, these are tough spots

and it's a reminder that this, this three-year old level, these

restricted races. I don't want to say, for

example, like he'd be better in the memorial tomorrow night at

Charlestown or something over the two turn 7 furlongs because

I don't know that I believe that because he is such a closer.

But it is. There's such a small niche right

now for these deep closing two turn dirt specialist Steve,

where we've turned into such a speed game where it's got to be

on the front of pressing with so many of these races.

You know, I, I would expect, you know, if he gets out, fierceness

has a real shot. If door knock gets out, he's got

a real shot here. I just feel like Anna Marie's

going to have to do so much work here and Sierra Leone simply is

going to be better at that kind of work.

And so he's out of the canoe for me.

Yeah, I, I, I lay in the same place.

I, I was curious, you know, again, just, I keep talking

about, you know, setting up foreclosure here.

I mean, there you go. But look, I mean, look back to

the Risen Star, you know, Sierra Leone really closed, you know,

Ana Marie didn't. So yeah, no, I, I, I don't see

it here. Yeah, I mean, this is the

example of blue you and I talk about all the time, really good

as a 2 year old has been good as a three-year old, but not great

as a three-year old. And it's kind of the, you know,

we talked about these horses that are three years old being

like, like freshman, high school, middle school athletes

and that we all remember the one middle school athlete that was

bigger and more athletic than everyone.

Then all of a sudden everyone caught up with them and just

passed them up, you know, And not to say that that's that's a

bad horse, but it's just, it's a reality, I guess.

We I also go ahead. Go ahead.

No, I was just going to say this.

This is a horseman. He looks so good.

You're right in that Kentucky, Kentucky Jockey Club, Excuse me

back. You know, Thanksgiving weekend

here. But yes, it is so difficult to

translate, especially for the guys.

It seems this is for the boys to translate that form from the

fall to the spring. Door Knock is the seven horse,

five to two Luis Ayez aboard Danny Gargan, the trainer and

now one of Louis's personal friends.

Right. You Danny.

I talk to him a lot. Yeah.

Right. Yeah, sure I do.

Right. Yeah.

There you go. I'm a I'm a journalist.

I don't have friends. You understand me?

I'm a curmudgeon. Just I don't have friends, Mike.

That's how that goes. Interrupting people.

How about that? He is.

He's got something that most of this field has struggled to do

and that's a that's a win streak at the grade one level.

Two straight grade one wins here for Dornak.

If he makes it third in this Travers, I think we're all in

agreement that this is 3 year old horse of the year or the

colt of the year. I guess I should say right in

the boat or out of the boat. That seems kind of stupid.

I think we are. If anyone says is anyone going

to say out of the boat on this one?

Maybe Steve, Any No. No, I mean he's.

Not my He's not my pick. He's not my pick.

But he, I, I would not be surprised.

Right. I think he's my top pick

actually. Here I just I, I will.

I have now seen enough of him and his willingness to clearly

be tired in the stretch and then find a gear again and go and I

and I think that's incredibly underrated to young horses.

He's won three in a row before between his main special with

that, R.E.M. said he came back won the fountain of you.

So it's not as though he can't do it.

I I've got him on top of my handicapping just because I've

seen it. I've seen him do it against this

group, frankly. And so yes, in the in the canoe

for sure. And we've seen him do it at a

mile and a quarter in Saratoga. That's right.

Yeah, Mile and a quarter. What am I saying?

Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Yeah, that's. Right.

Anything to add to that, Steve? No, I mean, like I said, I I I'm

not surprised at all if he wins this race.

I I'm ultimately going to go against him here because I just

think again, there's there's so much so much speed here.

He's going to face so much pressure.

I think back to that Belmont and how if mind frame could have

just run in a straight line in the stretch.

I think it does catch Dornak. So I, I, I, I that's where I'm,

you know, I respect him, but not my pick.

The 8 horse is probably the most intriguing horse in this field

and it's the every other. It's a it's it's the guy, it's

Todd Pletcher, it's Ripoli, it's Velasquez and it's fierceness.

And if this is this is the this is the other, right?

This should be the other. That should be the time he

doesn't fire. And if he does fire and he

starts to save face and he has a good Breeders' Cup Classic, he

could play himself into that conversation.

For three-year old colt of the year, if if not horse of the

year, actually, where are we staying on this one, Louis?

He's in the canoe for sure for me and I I wonder, you know,

we're doing the every other thing.

So let's go ahead and and analyze that.

Wins his first race that he runs in the slop in the champagne and

doesn't like it, doesn't win, comes back, wins the BC

Juvenile. OK, the every other is a loss by

three lengths in the Holy Bowl coming off a layoff.

That's the every other. OK, And then the every other

after that is the Derby. I think those are all excusable,

man. And so I'm gonna, I'm gonna go

ahead and say I'm not buying the every other thing with him, but

rather I think he's got a legit shot this weekend in the canoe

for sure of the Travers. Yeah, I, I, the, the every other

thing I think is it's a, it's a flukish thing, but it's, you

know, when you look at the, you know, closely at each race,

there's a reason for for most of them.

Yeah, He, he'd be basically my, my, you know, second pick here.

Definitely in the canoe. I think it's Sierra Leone wins

it, you know, I think passes fierceness late.

And I, you know, I think that's, I said corporate power earlier.

I think, you know, to try to, you know, juice up the try a

little bit. I think that's who I'd throw in

in 3rd. I, you know, I put out a poll on

Twitter the other day asking people who would be the favorite

in this race by the time we got to post, and it was Thorpedo and

Sierra Leone, Dornick and Fierceness.

Do you know who came in fourth in that poll?

Was Dornick. So the actual border glide

favorite in this race, do you know who won the vote there?

Steve? Steve's pick Sierra Leone.

Oh OK, here I am thinking I've got some original.

Yeah, by the way, no, no, by the way, I totally agree.

I expect him to be the favorite here.

I think he'll be like 5 to 2, two to one, something like that.

I think people are ready for him to breakthrough the second the

second go. They they they tied Thorpedo,

Anna and fierceness for getting that money.

And I'm I'm the only thing that I'll say is I do think Steve,

and I'm sure you're of the same opinion.

So Peter, Anna's gonna get a bunch of money just for being a

Philly, right? I mean, that's fair to say.

And and so and and that's fine. If you're rooting with your

money, go rooting with your money.

I don't care. Very mutual game.

Go throw it away. It's fine.

But the, you know, I, I think Sierra Leone's gonna be the

favor by the time we get to the post on Saturday.

I really you. Rethink my my opinion because I

I hate going crap big big. I came up with some, not

original, but something there was a little bit of no, no.

Oh man. The hell no.

That's not a baby race at Churchill now.

And Steve, I can't help you with this.

Yeah. No, it's not much like Saratoga.

Yeah. Louis, one more pick over under

at 11:45 for when Steve actually goes on the air tonight.

Oh, way over. Yeah, the they are party and

hearty at the old DNC. You know the only thing missing,

Steve, from your timeline. I've been following 'cause I, I,

I'm not much of a watcher of conventions, but I like people

that observe them for me, like you, which is nice.

You didn't put in when they they danced the Macarena at the

Democratic National Convention, which is a top three political

video of all time. It's I remember watching that

one live. You get Hillary.

Clinton and put away. Shots to these Democratic

luminaries of the mid 90s. What a moment.

What a what a what a moment. For us, oh, what a great time.

We used to be a proper country dancing the baccarat at the DNC.

You understand that? Oh, man, Good stuff out there.

Yeah. No way over.

Steve will go on air. The first thing we'll hear from

Steve will be at 12:02. AM sorry thanks for.

Hey, I'm just in the gambling business here.

I'm just setting over unders, you know, I'm just, I'm

answering questions from other people.

Steve, it's not me. Come on.

All right, Steve Kornacki, if you like, or start to, you know,

kind of drift a little bit around 10:30 or 11:00.

What is the go to pizza place by where you are doing the show

from since you're in New York? Oh man, there's a it's going to

be closed at that hour. There is actually a red, you

know, dirty rock here is one of the cool.

It's legitimately one of the coolest things I've I've seen in

a long time. It's called Ace's Pizza, but

what they decided they, they're an 80s themed throwback pizza

parlor. And so they actually had, they

got a, you know, an old school, you know, big TV from the 80s

that's playing television shows or sports events from the 80s.

The, it's all 80s decor. I mean, they, they really did it

up right. It's it's super, super cool.

The pizza's good, too, all. Right there it is, Good shout

out for those guys. Manhattan and Williamsburg.

Oh man, Steve's just doing the the hipster thing.

Oh, I see what's going. On I didn't know about the

Williamsburg hang on, I go to Northern Michigan.

Let's go. Oh.

Man, and actually I'm not lying. I'm looking at the website.

It looks awesome. But I'm not gonna lie, it looks

great. Like the the both the pizza and

the decor. It looks amazing.

So there you go. Yeah, man, Mike, we gotta, we

gotta live here with this pizza. It's just I'm not, I'm not OK

with it. Now that I've seen this.

I'm just effects my Steve. Today is my 21st wedding

anniversary. Congratulations to.

You do you have do you have marriage advice at all?

I think I should, do you know? A great married couple?

No, But you have a great married couple in your life or anything

like that that you've watched and you go, man, they figured it

out. Why I told him that one, my

friend, that one say I said, man, you're so lucky.

And then he told me some things and I said maybe not.

That sounds right. That sounds right.

There you go. Yeah, there you go.

Bad. All righty.

Steve, are we doing the show early cuz it's Louis anniversary

or because Steve's got the DNC? Yeah, I don't know.

Yeah. Works out for both of us, but I,

I always appreciate having me out because this is, I mean, I

just do this recreationally. I usually just listen to these

podcasts and learn. So it's fun to kind of, you

know, take my opinion with a grain of salt, obviously, but

it's fun to be part of it. I love, we love.

We made money. We made money last time you were

on. Steve.

Don't do that. That's all right.

We made some money. Yeah, we love it too.

So thank you very much for joining us, Kristen.

Thank you for putting up with Louie for 21 years.

And yeah, there it is. So we're going to pay the tab.

We're going to get out of here. This has been the horse racing

happy hour.
