it's true, Life is good. Welcome in another edition of

the Horse Racing Happy Hour, Lou Rebeau hanging out with you.

It is Tampa Bay Derby preview time, which means, of course,

I'm wearing a single little barrel cigar hat, as I always do

around this time, based in Ybor City.

The tobacco, all of it from Nicaragua, hung in those used

bourbon barrels right there in Ybor City, rolled for you,

placing their individual tubes. Leave them in there a little bit

longer with the extra bourbon char for a little extra bourbon

flavor. Go check them out on their

socials at Single Barrel Cigar Co for sure.

We've been teasing it for a while.

Want to invite in our friend Barry Spears?

He's wearing one of our great hats that we'll be giving away

as part of our trip to the Wood Memorial this year.

I'm holding the other one. You could look Barry Spears,

except you you'll look older. We were talking about this

earlier. Barry looks like he's still 25.

It bothers all of us. Barry.

Welcome, babe. You got to be starting to keep

over 21. No, he's not.

Barely. No, barely.

I mean, isn't it amazing? I have all this life experience

and I just turned. This whole life experience.

How was this happening? That's what we call it, life

experience these days. So come hang out with us.

Why not? April 5th will be up Ozone Park

hanging out at Aqueduct Racecourse for the Wood Memorial

ahead of the Kentucky Derby. Of course, my schedule

personally, by the way, if you want to come find me edited

spots, Jeff Ruby Steaks. March 22nd I'll be on Long

Island for the Wood Memorial. The next week I'll be at

Keeneland for the Lexington final of those Derby preps.

We're going to welcome in a new friend of the show.

His name is Chase of Oakland on the Twitters and all the things,

the SGPN and all of the great things the notorious OTB podcast

he does with Barry 708 days a week.

How about that? Not too bad, Chase.

How are you, man? How's Arkansas?

Man, it's well, I mean, it's Arkansas, but I'm doing well,

man, I'm doing doing pretty good.

You know, it's beautiful around here.

Starting to turn into spring. The racing's picking up at the

at the home track. So yeah, everything's good.

There you go. Fun stuff coming up, of course,

at Oaklawn. We'll have preview shows for

those coming up in the coming weeks, of course, ahead of the

Arkansas Derby, which they now run for $22 million.

Thank you very much, Arkansas. It's pretty incredible.

All right, so we're going to talk Tampa this weekend, but of

course, we're talking Derby trails.

So let's get into some of those replays to start the show here.

It's already been six days since these races, but we'll start in

South Florida with the Fountain of Youth.

Man, this was a tough one to to handicap a week ago.

I talked with Brian Nadeau sets the morning lines at Gulfstream

Park on on Rabonco here on ESPN 680 in Louisville.

And he just didn't know what we were going to get from

sovereignty. Well, answered all the questions

with this one comes out of that Kentucky Jockey Club and runs

this race down there. Pete Aiello on the call.

This is from Gulfstream Parks YouTube page.

Between horses and Sovereignty tries to motivate himself.

He's underway now. Blue colors.

He's within 8 lengths of the lead through 3/4 in 1-10 and

three Neo equos stretching out River Thames.

Sovereignty warming to the task for Alvarado.

He's on the far outside into third gate to wire finds his

best ride. Burnham squares bid is stalled

as River Thames has made a clear lead off the turn in the stretch

drive in the Fountain of Youth and River Thames, he has the

lead by two with a 16th to go. Sovereignty begins to get on

track, but time is ticking away. Way River Thames almost there.

Sovereignty going to dive at him late.

Here comes sovereignty, no. One quite doesn't like our guy

Peter Yellow. I'll tell you what man, just a a

total gift in our sport. What a great call there,

Sovereignty, getting up to clip River Thames, who was my pick

going into the race. Barry I, I didn't see anything

here to jump off either of the two horses that were at the

front there. I thought an overwhelmingly

positive performance for a guy off the bench in Sovereignty.

We've seen historically, Barry, how important it is if you want

to win the Kentucky Derby, to win your debut as a three-year

old. We get that with sovereignty

here. Yeah, very good performance and

not what I expected, but I, I only want those two out of that

race. The top 2.

I, I really do want River Thames a bit more.

I think that horse ran a winning race that day and just got run

down. And I mean, that happens

especially when they're younger type horses like this.

And worth noting that, you know, for the gallop, gallop out fans,

River Thames, actually River Thames galloped out farther and

faster than sovereignty, so that might be of note.

Yeah, no, I thought a really good performance from him,

especially trying the two turns for the first time.

We've seen Fletcher do this before Chase.

But you know, coming out of this kind of race with a sovereignty

with this River Thames, you know, obviously the distance

questions are going to come about I think less with

sovereignty and and and those sorts of things.

River Thames, You worried about the distance with him or do you

think he can get the 10? I think you can get the 10.

I mean the, the way that he held on for the, for the entire

distance of the fountain youth. I, I, I, it seemed like he was

still finding. I mean, you getting it, like

Barry said, you get nipped by other horses, but they were, you

know, the horse was still finding.

I I think that the horse has the heart for 10 probably.

Yeah, it's the part of it is what you just said, which is if

you lose by a head in a race over a mile and a 16th, did you

really do anything wrong? Especially we're talking about

110 / 5 furlongs for the split there.

That's that's a fast race. The Derby's probably going to

set up at that kind of speed one 10111, something like that.

We always think there's not going to be a horse that rabbits

out in 20, you know, 22 or 46 or 40, you know, 45 high 40 fives

or something. There always is right.

So a horse like Sovereignty, frankly, could sit in that mid

pack. Only thing I ever worry about,

Barry, with the the running style of a Sovereignty, for

example, is you get a 20 horse field and you end up in like

15th or something. There's a lot of work to do, a

lot of time between now and the first Saturday and maybe get

this horse more prime to be say in mid pack or even more close

up than that. But any concerns about

sovereignty being too far back? Yes, absolutely.

I mean things other horses that come to mind are materiality.

I don't know if you remember that horse a few years back took

a lot of money in the Derby and wasn't really ready for it.

And I'm not sure that's the case with Sovereignty, but it kind of

gives that sort of feel. So we're going to have to see

what happens from this point going forward just to make sure

Sovereignty is legit and if that horse can kind of keep up closer

in a further race. I say all this chase and we had

a three-way photo finish between three horses with different

running styles last year, Mystic Dan very much near the front.

We had forever young in the mid pack and then a horse of the

talent of a Sierra Leone deep closing.

It doesn't rule a sovereignty out by any stretch of the

imagination certainly, but any concerns for you on this, not

distance, excuse me, but just, you know, running style.

So I mean, you pointed out something, which is when you bet

a closer, you're not only betting a run style, you're

betting on a horse's luck as well much.

And that's like really, you know, think the same thing.

I feel like this is a plus in the for the the Sovereignty Pro

column though, which is in my mind when I think of these two

turn races at Gulfstream, I don't really see horses that

make that wide run and have that long sustained run actually get

all the way up. So I feel like maybe that horse

gets a little bit more credit for that going into it makes the

win a little bit more impressive than just by like a like a head.

Yeah, especially at the mile on a 16th, once we get to that

Florida Derby, I think if we get Barry a Sovereignty out of a

Florida Derby win, for example, or a River Thames out of a

Florida Derby win, I would put them maybe not as the favorite.

I think we might see the favorite in the next in the next

highlight here, but at least in the top, what, 3 or 4 of the

batting in the Kentucky Derby? Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

You know, usually the the winners of of the Florida Derby,

the Louisiana Derby, the bluegrass and usually the wooden

memorial are kind of like the top four choices anyway, just

off turf there you. Go.

Traditional tone, but you know, we're going to have to see what

happens, especially in in the. Let's head out West.

We will head out West and hear Frank Miramati at Santa Anita

Park. This was the San Felipe over the

last weekend. Half the field from Baffert.

No matter. Journalism takes the top spot in

the San Felipe. Starts this Sprint for home,

stablemate Rodriguez trying to make it interesting in second in

Journalism 4, off the pace in 3rd.

They're followed by smooth Cruising and Mellencamp.

They're 1/4 of a mile from home and Barnes is widening.

Journalism now swings into action on the outside.

These are the two as they come to the 8th bowl.

Barnes in front by three. Journalism chasing with

determination, getting closer with every stride.

And here comes Journalism right, run by Barnes, and it will be

Journalism striding away powerfully to win the DK Horse

San Felipe Stakes. In a week where we lose Trevor

Denman to retirement and and shout to Trevor man.

But just spectacular career. 40 years at Del Mar, we get a Frank

Miramati doing his best Trevor impression where he sees

journalism coming before frankly even I saw that horse switch

leads at the 8th pole there chase.

And this is the kind of win that gives me hope for horses,

especially off the layoff. I know it's a smaller field of

five, but mid pack probably, you know, four or five lengths off

making that move in the stretch behind a a a Barnes horse out of

a bat for barn that was always going to try to get the lead and

keep it. I thought this was, yeah, this

was the performance of the weekend.

I thought it was pretty good, but I, I'm going to ask the

question. I, I genuinely want your

opinions on this, which is did we maybe get a little bit cocky

on the ride with Barnes? Did we maybe think that we

didn't really need to to, you know, put that much into it to

be able to cruise home And that's what ended up costing

Barnes. I, I, I do think it's

impressive. I, I mean, you're anytime you're

chasing down a two to five Bob Baffert horse, that's always an

impressive effort. But maybe, maybe have a little,

hell, maybe a little lackadaisical in the in the

irons, a little bit on on Barnes there.

I'm not sure I'll take anyone's opinion on it.

That's the worst part of my game.

And, you know, interpreting what people are doing on horses.

What a what a, what a great endorsement for the notorious

OTB podcast that was. Yeah, absolutely.

You agree with, you agree with this.

You agree with this assessment, though, where, you know, with a,

with the Barnes and look, they're trying to win the Santa

Anita Derby with that horse, not the San Felipe, right.

And and you know, and so I at that point is very well taken

from chase as far as was this horse totally turned up?

Was he, you know, was he totally ready to fire in this occasion?

I'm here for the argument, but I I don't think it takes away one

iota from what journalism did on Saturday.

No, you're right. Two things can be true at the

same time, where journalism ran a really good race and Barnes

wasn't cranked up all the way and and it it seemed evident.

Just the fact that Barnes didn't kick away tells you that the

horse wasn't cranked up to the fullest extent, which is a good

thing for Bob Baffert going forward because I think Barnes

is is as good as anybody or or anybody I've seen so far.

So it it, it's going to be real interesting to see how how that

match up ends up in the Santa Anita Derby.

Future wager? Same.

Let's call them both 5 to one. I give you the fields from the

Fountain of Youth and the San Felipe and everybody else at

5:00 to 1:00. Which one are you taking, Chase?

I'm taking the field honestly. That's the logical choice.

I agree, Barry. I'm taking Barnes.

I'll take those two. Pretty good.

Yeah. Yeah.

But it's the Derby. So it's going to happen at the

damn Derby. That's exactly right.

I signed the chase logically on that one.

Go ahead, buddy. I, I say the field because I, I

feel like the whole time you guys have been talking about,

you know, journalism and sovereignty and I feel like

there's a horse named Cole battle that's just like

strolling around like Clubber Lang and like Rocky 3 right now,

Just like, you know, where once his shot, once his respect.

I don't hate that take at all actually there you go chase

hanging out with us from the notorious OTV podcast his

partner in crime there is the sniper of the urban handicapper.

shows and you can play double s, pick threes and pick fours at 18

percent, 15% on those pick fives.

All very, very, very playable there.

No matter what you want to try to press on Saturday at Tampa

Bay, we're going to start a little bit earlier in the card

guys, because they do the thing where there's a get out race for

traffic, but it's not included in the pick six and the pick

five and the Tampa thing, and it's Barry and I believe Barry.

Mostly it's Barry's fault. Barry, I don't know why you set

this up this way. Why would you do this?

I think a lot of it has to do with the with the TV coverage.

Oh, it's. TV.

Yeah, I think. What else?

It's a radio guy. I'll gladly blame TV.

So there you go. There you go, easy.

Get into it race 5 is the grade 3 challenger at Tampa this

weekend. I love this race.

We see the return of Skippy's log stocking.

We're going a mile and 16th on the dirt here, 4 and up 125 in

the Kitty here as well. So and I I think chase, it's a,

it's a theme on this show. All the work that I do about how

excited I am about the the older dirt male handicap division for

this year, getting all those three-year olds back that we're

going to get in fiercest and Sierra Leone and Mine frame and

Missing Dan and everybody else. The list is actually

significantly long. I think we're going to get a

bunch of stakes like this where it's 789 horses and it's just

fun, right Where you can take a shot, you can do that kind of

thing. Do you have that same sense of

this year too? Yeah, it it's kind of nice

because it feels like it all the compelling racing that we've

gotten for the last few years has come like almost exclusively

from the distaffed division. Like I, I like seeing that we're

getting more mature horses, you know, ready to to knock around

in these, in these classic races.

So yeah, I'm, I'm completely with you on that, on that take.

So we moved to race 5 here at Tampa Bay.

Skippy's on the outside of the 8.

Barry, tell me, who's going to beat Skippy?

I hope everybody, but no. This is going to irrational,

irrational atrium. Yeah, yeah, it's really.

Strange. I think this race is is is

really the toughest rendition of the challenger that Skippy's

been in. That's that being said, drawn

outside, there's some other speed and it's going to be tough

for Skippy to kind of overwhelm this field like he's done in the

past. A horse like Patriot Spirit has

the same kind of versatility and is coming into this race a

little bit sharper, and that's who I wanna take on top,

especially getting Irad. All right, who did you land on

here, Chase? Yeah, I'm actually with my

partner here. I think the horse that blows up

the challenger mistakes is the 5 patriot spirit 6 to one.

I I mean, I have a feeling feeling this horse might end up

on the lead on its own and really be able to kind of slow

this this thing down. Plus, I mean it's a Kentucky

Derby prep weekend. You know that that tracks going

to be scraped down for speed, which Tampa also already kind of

promote speed. So I I think the patriot spirits

in a great spot. You're end up having to pay the

the I rad tax a little bit and you're also going to have to

trust I rad on your horse on the front also.

So that's, that's where the, you know, does the juice or the

squeeze sort of thing comes from there.

But I I do like Patriot Spirit quite a bit in that spot.

There you go. Patriot Spirit, of course,

coming out of the fifth season at Oakland Park, running second

under Christian Torres will come into this one.

I think you're going to get at least 9:00 to 2:00 on that

horse, would you not? I mean, you got to think in this

case, I know you got to pay the irate tax, but I don't think

it's going to be any lower than 92.

Yeah, that, that seems about right.

Yeah, that seems about right. Interested in Most wanted.

Do you think this is a horse that can jump up and win here

Barry and add his name to that 4 year old list of of more of

these older horses? I'll tell you.

I'll tell you, man, he did a lot of good work in the Clark up

here in November. Yeah, no, definitely you.

Know as a three-year old too. It's kind of an unheralded 3

year old, frankly. Yeah, it's, it's just one of

those things where it's just where this horse fits is, is

kind of the the issue more than anything else, but as good as

anybody, I think. By the way, Ben Dugue is the

horse that's going to screw this thing up, so.

I hope not because that horse doesn't win.

You know, you see the two windows is it's the two wins

that horse has one is the first level allowance and then an

optional clamor 62,000 anytime other than that, this horse kind

of looks the part and then doesn't win.

It's crazy. Doesn't win maiden special in

six starts. The pick 6-7 furlongs on the

dirt here for three-year olds. 53 K and the Kitty here.

Chase, we go to you first here. You know, this is a this is kind

of the classic dirt shoot here. We get some of the Chad Brown

firsters in here and all that kind of stuff.

Where'd you land? Big field here.

Really really great spot to start the pick 6.

I so I have two that I really like here. 1 is a more

conservative, shorter price and I feel like you didn't bring me

here for that. You brought me here to hit

dingers. So I've got a horse on the

outside with the 11. What is steel at 30 to one?

I I think is really kind of intriguing as a with a pedigree

and coming off of a bullet work going 5 furlongs to hammering a

long workout in the quick win through this horse for Lisa

Allen. I mean, Lisa Allen and herself,

No, no slouch. She rarely debuts horses.

If you go into formulator, dig into it, you'll see in the last

five years she's only debuted four horses, but she won with

one of them. So I think this one could be a

really kind of sneaky under the radar thing comes from a very

productive mayor who's put out 1313 full seven of which

winners. And a lot of those have to

observe winning early on in their career.

And then I'm always a sucker for Go Dolphin because that my

dolphin, as I like to say, I do like to play Del Mar in there at

9:00 to 2:00 along with them. But it's the 11.

What a steal at 30 to one that I'm really excited about.

That's awesome. First timer there as he

mentioned. Barry, do you have anyone at 30

to one? No, but I do have a couple of or

a long shot the five night agent out of Shug's barn.

He unveiled one on Sam F Davis Day Kasser in a maiden race sort

of similar to this one. And I think that run on the turf

and then getting back to dirt is is really what should be the key

here. I don't think this horse was

really meant to to run on the turf.

Getting to the dirt makes all sense in the world.

I like the the workout on March 2nd and gets hot rider and and

Sammy Marin. So this one definitely is is the

horse I'm going to push in on. Yeah, I'm fascinated by Bohemian

style. It's a fourth time starter.

We get Sunny Leone here who is winning at a decent clip at

Tampa Bay at the current time. This is second off the layoff

here from a couple of attempts in State Bread Company at

Gulfstream Park. And so I'm actually interested I

think at 8 to one with a bullet work the other day coming into

this one. This might be a horse that's in

good form. They're turning this one around

faster than a month by a lot, frankly.

Horse ran or excuse me, faster than two months here.

Horse just ran. But second off the layoff here,

interested in the 8 to one price of what we might get there.

The Columbia is going to be race 7 here on the card at Tampa Bay,

Louis Rabo, Barry Spears and of Oaklawn.

You will lie anything other than that chase.

I mean because I I feel like you, you intentionally keep your

last name for people like your Cher or something.

Yeah, I mean, the I'll throw the hardest.

Yeah, it's it would be nice to have just like a symbol like

that. But I know it's the last name is

Sesame. It's, it's, I mean, there's a

lot of shine behind it. Go the Columbia Race 7.

This is for three-year olds. Here we're going a mile 125 in

the Kitty. Here we see the return of Zulu

Kingdom in this one. Revolutionaire coming over from

Europe as well. Barry, more likely for you a

horse off the layoff out of the Breeders Cup or a horse coming

over North America first time. North America first time all

right, they North America first time Revolutionaire looks looks

pretty good in this spot. I have to think that a group

three in France is slightly better then a non graded stake

here and this horse just missed a long shot.

But I think this the stretch out makes all the sense in the world

and this source should get a good trip considering what this

race shape kind of looks like. The other horse I would give

mentioned to would be the 9 Dream On.

That's actually would be my top pick in this spot, but I think

they're very similar. Dream On is also my top pick in

here. Chase, where did you end up

planted? So bear with me on this angle

here. I I there sometimes people get

into situations in their life that makes them more hungry as a

jockey. Mr. Frankie Dattori right now

has the the back taxes. He's got the the issues, legal

issues in London. I know that he's going to be

hungry to ride. I really like the look of the

seven verses at 12 to one for Natori with Kelly, for Kelly

Breen. The big thing is the horse took

a massive step forward from where it broke its maiden into

the optional claimer 75,000 where it went up 9 buyer points

and had trouble in the process. If there's any horse out there,

you know, coming in off of a, you know, a good month rest,

that could probably take a large step forward and be very

competitive, you know, in this race at a longer price.

I think it's this, this the seven verses with Frankie

Dettori with his his barrister bills.

No one's mentioned Reagan's wit just yet.

Is that just because only Barry's old enough to remember

Reagan's wit? That's a good joke.

I it's a good. It's a good.

It's a good. Yeah, I look older than Barry.

It's not good for me. All right, so we'll move on to

Race 8. We're going to do that instead.

Race 8 is an optional claimer for four and up for non twos. 6

furlongs on the dirt here. 53 K in this.

I got to say as a horse player, Barry and Chase, I love a

sequence where it's like stakes, optional claimer, you know,

stakes routing, stakes spreading.

I love the mix up here, trying to have to, you know, put that

puzzle together of a late sequence here.

Of course, race 8 will start the late pick 4 here or the all

stakes pick or the non all stakes pick four.

I should say here in the optional claimer chase where

agenda planning. You know, I I really like the

six take charge smiling here with John Rigatieri with Daniel

Centeno up. I I thought this horse was going

to get a pretty good trip sitting in the second wave

behind, which should be a little bit of early speed here and and

should be able to kind of track that.

I think three horses that are probably going to be hunting the

front. So I'm taking who I think is the

strongest looking first run off pace horse and that and that's

that six. What is it?

Take charge smiling. Take charge smiling 5 to one

decent price here. Taking the blinkers off in for

the tag. Barry, where'd you end up

planning? I ended up on #8 Osprey.

Now since this horse was claimed by Juan Ariagata, this horse has

has had an interesting campaign. So you see this horse was was

claimed on October 12th, runs opening day at at Tampa and just

misses and had a nightmare trip. The the jock lost the irons, was

inside then outside and just missed.

And I think that horse is running back into form to that

point. And this race sets up very well

for Osprey. There's a ton of speed up front

and this horse should come running like a freight train.

So Osprey is where it's at. If we get 12:50 I may push all

in. Oh wow, there you go.

All right, I landed on the 12 Laser sharp second off the

layoff here for John Terranova. I know that's super boring, but

Marine is has been running really, I mean riding really

well on Tampa right now, 21% the two of them not connecting on

many horses to this point. But I thought First off, the

layoff off that allowance win, starter allowance win.

I should say at Aqueduct, the horse looks just fine first time

up. Should take a step forward here

after some training and some time in Tampa.

So I think the 12's interesting. I think if you're looking for

kind of an on under the radar horse, the horse that won last

out in dither now this year already, this will be his fourth

start. It's pretty incredible to say

this is a son of algorithms 5 year old gelding.

He's not in for the tag here despite the fact that he has run

for 8:00, but one at a higher level.

He just hasn't won at a high enough level to not qualify for

this. Last time he was in this kind of

company he won as well. I know I just gave out a three

to one and a four to one and those are boring.

But hey, we can go skinny in any part of this ticket.

I'll take it for sure. The Hillsboro, believe it or

not, is the highest graded race at Tampa all year.

It is a grade 2. It's on the turf there, Milan

and 8th in the shoot there. They use every single bit of the

shoot and one of the great turf courses in America there at

Tampa Bay Downs. Phillies and Mares 4 and up in

this one, $225,000 on the line and we see the usual names in

here. Chase between Chad Brown and

Graham. Motion, of course, got an

interesting thing that's been happening recently.

Chase in the in the Motion camp, which is an influx of horses

coming from South Africa and South African breds.

We get A7 for seven lifetime horse here.

Worth mentioning to listeners of this show she's listed at six

years old That's because of the southern hemisphere thing.

She's really five years old. She was a three-year old

champion in South South Africa is this is her first start quote

as a 5 year old but really it just for calendar reasons starts

as a six year old here. Chase, where did you lay it in

the Hillsboro? Man, I love this race all.

Right. So first, I want to say it's

nice that all the mornings of degenning turfentine in South

Africa finally, finally coming into play is pretty nice.

Feels feels pretty good, Very validating.

I don't know. I I picked out three horses in

in this race that I feel like would be extremely valuable on

on horizontal tickets. But also, I mean, still with,

you know, some pretty strong horses here, still probably

pretty valuable underneath and verticals as well.

I like the one sparkle blue from the from the rail for green

motion as you, as you mentioned, the 9 eternal silence, 20 to one

Clemont. He's got his boy Rosario up.

They seem very, very deliberate with where they're starting this

horse. You look at the workouts and it

looks like one of those situations where maybe this

horse has been worked for months to punch a hole through the

through the sound barrier in the start.

And so I I really think that one's worth it at 20 to one and

that likes the 10 demosso at 15 to one I felt I felt like there

wasn't much speed. And if a speed is going to hold,

it's going to be demaso and and at that price, I think you have

to play it. I love Demaso in this spot.

I totally agree with you, Chase. I talked with Red and Carruthers

on ESPN 680 this morning. She thinks eternal silence is

absolutely a factor in this race as well.

Barry, you have to be proud of us going 15 to one to 21 there.

I do, but I also think that this isn't the spot to do.

Love it. You know, I, I, I think Sparkle

Blue has a distinct advantage. I know this horse really doesn't

want the lead, but it could be a situation where it was just like

last year where this horse skated to the front and nobody

went with this horse. I, I, I know Demaso shows speed,

but I'm not sure they're going to be willing to compromise that

horse's chances by forcing the pace up front too much.

With that being said, Sparkle Blue draws the rail can easily

get the lead. George Ruiz did it last year and

with the three scratching out of this race, she's fire.

I think that it really sets up a very similar to what this horse

did last year. So Sparkle Blue is definitely on

my radar. The other horse that that I'd

give credit to is Venecia. Should get a very good trip and

be closer to the pace than he was the last time.

I think Tyler's going to put this horse in a in a closer

spot, so she basically can run down Saffron Moon That that that

would be the idea. I went with Chad Brown here.

I I don't want to. I hope everyone was sitting down

when I said that, because I know you're so stunned that I.

Phone in. I yeah, phone in.

Spalla Day is the six here. Jose Ortiz gets them out.

This horse hasn't run since October.

That means absolutely nothing to me.

As far as the Chad Brown trainee, only loss was in the

Lake Placid last three runs there at Saratoga over good go.

We're going to have good and firm go here.

Very good and firm go for frankly at Tampa.

I think this one is going to be primed off a bullet workout of

pace in to be ready to run there in Florida as well.

We move into the Florida Oaks, which might be you know it's

gonna happen. I'm gonna say this out loud both

you shake your heads. I think the most difficult to

Haiti cap race on this card and both of your like no, there's

sick here, bro. You don't see it.

How do you not see this lose an idiot.

There it is. Yeah, there is.

You're muted, Barry, so it doesn't matter what you think.

Right now, No, you're right. You're right.

No, that's why I didn't. I didn't unmute because because

you, you actually had this right.

This is a crazy. Race.

OK, good. Race.

That is the grade 3 Florida Oaks.

Yes, all of the preps for this are on dirt.

We're going to the turf here. It's a mile out of 63 year old

Phillies 200K and the Kitty here.

Barry will go to you here first for the Florida Oaks starting

halfway up that turf shoot there in the middle of Tampa.

Good luck. I actually didn't write down the

horse's number for this, for this segment.

I I don't know what to tell you. I, I kind of like two horses in

here, but Brillante or Brilliante, I don't know how you

say it, but the Chad Brown horse was Sam Camacho on it #2 looks

to be really tough. I I mean, if you saw that race,

this horse was when this horse ran at Tampa on January 17th,

hesitated to start. I think it was a a starter

mishap. The starter visibly made like a

gesture after the the gates opened.

But despite all of that. It's also giving.

Everybody A3 length head. Start.

It's also her first time with the starter in the gate with her

too, coming over from France, right?

So that's a big chance. We're sort of starting gate,

yes. Absolutely and and this horse

just cruised I I want to believe that the instructions were to

let her finish up strong and boy did she do that and it sets the

source up for a good run here. I I think they know that this

horse fits class wise and and at 12:50, getting an off brand,

quote UN quote jockey, basically a local hero makes all the sense

in the world and should get the price on top of all that.

And then the other horse I would give mention to a smart union,

probably better than what this horse actually looks like speed

figure wise on paper. But the only horse that really

beat this horse is Savetta, who's very, very good in the

wait a while and after that this was kind of handled a couple of

decent fields. This one is is very tough but

can work out a trip. Denny's very good on riding on

that turf course. We'll call him DJ Sniper.

He's all the ones and twos. What say you, Chase?

You know, I, I have a horse that I'm so confident in in the Tampa

Bay Derby that I really thought that the best way to play this

was to double into it out of out of this race.

And there were three horses that I wanted to use in double s.

The most exciting one is De Lorraine for Go Dolphin, because

that my dolphin and I know it's the Owen Hardy go dolphin.

It's not like Chucky apples and Billy Buck coming across the the

pond or anything. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Hang. On name drops.

No, no, it's it's needless besmirchman.

Why Owen Hardy's catching strays on this show.

What are we doing? We're doing Owen Hardy.

It's not, it's not besmirchman. I'm just saying like if we were

to compare numbers, compare stats.

Charlie Appleby, Bill Maher, Brad Cox.

I mean, Hardy's got 2 on The Dirty trail.

What we do? Oh no dude, I'll put it up again

first, but everybody drink. Needless for first, but

everybody drink. I'm not here.

How could you? Dislike someone who spells Owen

like that. Come on.

He's good. He's good people in my in my

book. But I I don't like his horse

here in the in the Florida Oaks. I mean it.

You have to take a chance here to to get this price and and to

to bet this horse and that the chances that this horse really

will take to turf like it showed that it that it would in that

$75,000 optional claimer at at Tampa back in December.

If the horse indeed does take to turf and is trending up like

we're seeing with three ascending buyer speed figures,

then I think this is a real wild card that you have to play

because I mean, it's not like these these candy ride babies

are are terrible on the turf by any means.

And you've got a little bit on the little bit of turf pedigree

on the other side. So you know, the the other

horses were were pretty easy to get to the seven opulent

restraint. I mean, how how can we not put

that horse on the ticket? And and the 9 nitrogen, of

course, who looks? I, I think probably your most

likely winner, but I, I think you'd take the shot with De

Lorraine there, quite honestly. If I'm using a local that's run

at turf, excuse me, at at at Tampa before I'm looking at the

motion, I read Ortiz combination on pretty lavish the 10 here.

If I especially if I can get nine to two, five to one, that

kind of number coming out of that race.

This is one of those where you watch a maiden race and you see

a horse just look lost for a little while.

Like they're kind of looking around like, oh, I'm in a race

instead of just training something like that.

We're all going the same direction and and then goes, oh

crap, I got to get going and goes ahead and wins in that

spot. And it's a classic IRAD dilemma,

which is is he going to kick it on in time for this horse to

find a path forward? And so I do wonder with that one

if she's going to have a chance moving forward.

Ren gave us Celtic Motif this morning.

Rand last time is still a maiden, has hit the board four

times in five runs and and she essentially said the horse

really liked going left-handed here.

And so, you know, if you look back at this horse's runs,

second time ever goes left-handed over the seven

furlongs there at Nos and then comes back at Gulfstream Park,

first stateside. First time keeps, you know, and

and with Tyler gets Frankie here and if Chase is right about

motivations, I'll take 12 to one on a horse like that.

All funny enough you you speak about that horse.

I would take the other one out of that.

That's in this race. The five at 30 to one.

Love you anyway. Ran basically the same race, was

wider and finished stronger. Oh, and Rusty Arnold's second

start is the angle with him. It's not even a question.

Especially like you get to Ellis in the summer with two year

olds. Rusty Arnold's got a second

timer. Forget it.

Look, don't even bet it because you're not going to get any

money. I mean, he's that good.

And so, yeah, no, it's I don't hate the Owen especially there.

I do not hate the George Weaver or George Arnold.

Excuse me, second timer. I think that's a.

Really good, yeah. I I wouldn't take, I wouldn't

blame anybody for taking a flyer on that horse in this situation

because this is a wide open race.

That horse ran really good despite what it may look like on

paper. And if you're going to take the

11 at 12 to one, you have to like the five at 30 to one.

We play a game on this show Chase with all of the biggest

races on Saturday where we play a buy or sell essentially.

OK, And you tell me if you think a horse can win or if they're

very unlikely to win, OK, And in honor of our friends a single

barrel cigars, we're going to say if they win it's a cigar and

if not close, but no OK. And so we will play cigar or

close, but no. For the Tampa Bay Derby, it is a

mile and a 16th on the dirt course there at Tampa Bay Downs,

$400,000 in the Kitty of course for three-year olds and 50

points to the winner toward the Kentucky Derby.

Guys, this has been a really fun route through Tampa this year.

A bunch of three-year olds who are a lot of fun.

We've seen some of them in the sprinting races in the Pasco and

other things. Now we see different ones in the

route race here in the Tampa Bay Derby.

The return of Owen Almighty, of course, Chancellor Mcpatrick

coming back out of that Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and

everybody's favorite apparently in Patch Adams coming out of

that SW last time out. We'll go horse by horse here.

We'll start with #1 Chase in Owen Almighty Cigar or close,

but no, I'm. Going to go close, but no.

OK, why is that? Move in the wrong direction,

took a step back from the passcode to the CMF.

Davis, I understand you were dueled and out kicked last time,

but I don't know. I feel like that might have did

the Pasco might have taken a little bit of starch out of out

of Owen Almighty. So I'm saying close, but no.

Cigar or close, but no cigar. And Owen Almighty, you Barry

Spears. Cigar, that horse is excellent,

has has not run a bad race yet and I don't think it's going to

happen here either. I I think Owen almighty stands a

good chance just because of the race dynamics where there's

really not that much speed in here.

And, and this horse is intent on not going to the Derby, which is

another plus that they're probably going to be really

trying to win this race and makes a lot of sense here.

I think a mile and a 16th makes a lot of sense.

I'll go Cigar. If this were another prep.

A mile and an eighth we go to Louisiana Mile and three

sixteenths. He would be a close, but no, for

me. Mile and the 16th I think is

exactly where they want him at. I expect him on Derby day to be

running in the Pat Day Mile, not in the Kentucky Derby.

The two horse is Chancellor Mcpatrick.

I'll go first here. Barry, if you were just playing

form, if you were just playing talent, I think you would put

this horse on top. I will go Cigar because I think

no one's sitting at this table, virtual table.

We'll be surprised if he ends up winning in this spot.

I will go cigar on. Chancellor Mcpatrick.

Barry, what say you? I'm going to say close, but no,

I I think this horse is 11 race away.

It's it's it's really tough. The dynamics of running at Tampa

Bay Downs. It's really hard to to close and

I don't think this horse is going to get a good setup in

general. That being said, it's not like

this horse couldn't just overwhelm these horses and if

that does happen, I'll be OK with it because you know, this

horse is going to be a short price.

But I I still think that this horse is one race away.

Chase, let's say you about Chancellor Mcpatrick.

I I say close, but no, And I think the reason is the horse

lost the race whenever they they took entries because this, this

just doesn't shape up for for Chancellor Mcpatrick at all With

like Barry said, there's a there's a pace dynamic that's

definitely against Chancellor Mcpatrick.

We're on a surface that doesn't really seem to elevate deeper

closers. I I say close, but no, it's just

not the spot. I'm going to guess that I know

exactly what they're about to say about Hill Rd. who danced

around on the track at Del Mar before realizing he was in the

Breeders Cup Juvenile last out and finished a very game third.

We've seen the horse ahead of him in, excuse me in Citizen

Bowl. Come back obviously just fine as

a three-year old bear. We go to you first here.

Cigar are close but no on my pick for the Tampa Bay Derby in

Hill Rd. Cigar I think this horse is

going to be more forwardly placed.

I I'm not really sure what happened on on the Breeders cup

day, but I I think this horse is going to be into the race a lot

earlier than he was in that race.

And that will make all the difference because I don't think

this this pace is going to be all that that lively up front

and and Hill Rd. might fall into a great trip just by being

closer to the pace. Well, let's chase about Hill Rd.

here. Close but no close but same

exact same problem as Chancellor as Chancellor Mcpatrick with

with Hill Rd. is you're going to be sitting.

If you're sitting 8 links off of the early pace here, you're not

going to win this race. And I feel like it's the exact

same move the Chancellor Mcpatrick is going to put down.

I I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if if some Chad Brown

stuff happens and Chad Brown wins because I've lost to Chad

Brown a lot playing horses. So but I say close but no for

Hill Rd. Chad Brown, of course, Eclipse

winner for top trainer last year.

In 2024 we move on to the four four horse here.

Name for Bro Doer. Do you know who Bro Doer is?

Sniper. Absolutely.

I I'm from New England. I know hockey.

Hello, Marty. Brodeur reference here, which is

unusual. Yeah.

I always think of hockey in the O'Neill barn for whatever

reason. Nyquist or whatever else.

Yeah, we go to Brodeur 15 to what he does come out of the wet

fast win at Oaklawn before that one over the mud at Oaklawn.

Isaac Castillo not making making the trip.

Jose Ortiz picks up them out here.

I think guys not close for me, the most difficult horse to

handicap in here because we're not going to have those

conditions whatsoever. This is very clearly a horse

with speed with the ability to get the front and keep the front

if he needs to. I'm going cigar on this one

because I think he's at least part of the equation at the end

of this race. Even if he gets rundown, I

expect this horse to be part of the exacto trifecta.

Whatever kind of play Chase, how do you feel about this guy?

You know, you might have kind of like maybe talked me into a

little bit, 'cause I mean, it is, it's a question.

It's the running style more than anything else, but you could

make the case because it was sloppy.

He could get out front, nobody could pass him.

I wouldn't be mad at any of those kinds of analysis.

But he's willing to get the front and that's all I care

about. 3 year old races in March.

Like, if you're willing to be the winner, great, let's just

run with that. So many of these Kentucky Derby

preps were won by the exact same kind of horse, which is Fortley

placed. High cruising speed.

No one else can keep up with them.

Boom. We Brad Baffert, Brad Cox have

all made careers out of it. And I do think it's the most

probably intriguing horse you got to.

I mean, then you see Nyquist, you see 2 for two in the wet and

you really have that question I to be, I'm going to say cigar.

I'll say cigar there because there's not going to be a ton of

spiel. I'll say cigar.

Barry, why do you not like this horse?

As as you know, this is definitely a close, but no, if

you look at this horse's first race against guns loaded, he

wasn't even close and then rips off two straight wire to wire

victories. I'm just doubting how fast this

horse is and compared to these type horses, Owen Almighty is is

way better than what they're giving him a chance for and and

he's quicker than Brodeur. You know, but there is a

situation where they might let Brodeur go just the time the

horse. So we'll see.

It's going to be interesting to see how, you know, Flavin Pratt,

for example, kind of rides this race because you don't want to

get too far back. And honestly, Chancellor

Mcpatrick doesn't want to, you know, dead close from like 30

lengths because it's never going to work.

So it's really going to be interesting to see where where

the placement is for a lot of these horses.

Another horse who will try to come from off the pace is

Filoso. That'll be the five horse here,

Son of City of Light. Throw the blinkers on.

This one is Chad Summers. Man, I wish for our game guys

that Chad Somers had better horses because he's one of the

damn finest. That's my guy.

Podcast a radio guy could ever do.

He talks bleep. He's fantastic.

I really wish. Look, if I'm rooting for a horse

this weekend, it's fellow so because I just want I want him

up here. I want him backside.

Derby week, Tuesday morning at 10:30.

I'm crushing a cigar doing radio and he's like, yeah, I'm sitting

down with that guy. That's what I want.

This is what I want, people. I'm a very simple man.

I just want to smoke cigars and talk to Chad Somers.

You understand me? I'm a simple man this way.

I really hope this works works out.

I'm going to go close, but no, you chase.

Yeah, close. But no, it falls into the same

thing as Chancellor Mcpatrick. It falls into the same thing as

as Hill Rd. It's just that they're they're

sitting in just a terrible spot in this race shape.

So close, but no. Barry, what do you think about

Chad Summer's training here? I will say close, but no, with a

caveat. If Chad is wearing the

Creamsicle suit that Chuck Simon used to always get on his case

about, it could spell that this horse is going to run a huge

race. So if he's wearing that

Creamsicle suit, I'm going to tweet it out and, you know, do

with that information what you will.

You heard it here folks, You heard it here from from the

sniper himself. Naughty Rascal be in the 6th

hole. All the local connections here,

the Bennett Barn and Camacho. Of course they did run in the

Davis trying two turns for the for the second time there on the

dirt. Excuse me in in general the the

other time was over the mile turf course there at Gulfstream

Park. Of course ran really well in the

Pasco. I think we're finding out of

this son of roguish is actually a sprinter Barry and I think

he'll live much of his life doing things in you know running

races in Florida as a Florida bred able to handle that kind of

situation. Appreciate him being in here

because seven horses means full points for the Kentucky Derby

trail. But Barry?

close but no. Or a cigar here.

Close but no I I this is a hard knocking horse that that has a

real future in the in the state bred ranks because there's a

state bred day at Tampa in March or April that this horse would

be perfect for and and I think that that's what they're going

to probably shoot for giving him a shot here does make sense.

I mean, I would too given his body of work, but close.

But no. I mean, Dana by Smarty Jones,

Dad's by Into Mischief. It's the Brady's at least there

to go two turns. He just doesn't seem to want

necessarily to do it. Chase, where did you land on

him? You know what I'm going to say

I'm going to say cigar here. And the reason I'm going to say

Cigar is I think that this horse is going to be sitting the

perfect spot first run at the the early speed.

So if they're just not good enough, they don't have it on

the front. This this is the horse is going

to have all the shot in the world to to make the move

entering the stretch. Also, you can ask Barry and he

will confirm this is true. Yesterday I invented the word

Rascal tudeness, which is going to change the game for rascals

and scamps. Also, rad dudes with attitude

will be impacted. So this is just, you know, yeah,

yeah. There's all sorts of vibes going

on here. So I will say cigar to naughty

Rascal. You're strange man.

Chase, this is a close but no for me.

Move on to the final of the field.

We're going to let Chase go first here because he can't

stand up when talking about Patch Adams.

He'll be in the 7th hole here. Floral Giroud and Brad Cox and

this one not in line last time out at least.

Chase, with what you talked about as far as these Cox

runners that can get the front and stay there, this is going to

be one that's going to try to close from just off, which I

think will set up very, very well in this field.

He's a cigar for me. So I'll go ahead and flash my

cigar in front of me here again, Single Barrel cigars, go check

them out on all the socials at Single Barrel Cigar Co there in

Ybor City. Chase, tell us why you think

he's a cigar. This source is a a Churchill

with the Connecticut wrap. A nice creamy finish I I think

the here's the deal yeah speaking ran away from from

patch Adams in the southwest but I I mean patch Adams pretty much

kind of knocked himself out of this at the gate with the bobble

does the horse still fought on still put up a a good figure

that 98 two back in the main main special weight going one

turn. I mean that crushes this field.

I really think that this horse is it look kind of like you

said, going to sit that like off the hip stalking kind of trip

and then it's just going to be bedtime for Bonzo whenever they

get whenever they hit the stretch.

Is this your winner? Yeah, hands down.

OK, Cigar. All right, Eric, Cigar or close?

But no. Is it possible for me to give

more than one cigar to a horse? Hey, God, is that possible?

All right, all right. Now I want all the cigars to go

to Patch Adams. I think this horse ran a a

winning race in the Southwest. It was just a little bit short.

Gets a good set up this time despite being drawn outside and

Florent Giroux to the hoop. The Flocox.

Yes, Flocox. Nobody.

Nobody can beat the Flocox. No, I like.

To Yeah, I like that. Yeah, so it's good.

But like that more than I should.

I also wrote cigars and all caps for you because I like you,

Barry. How about that?

These are things, you know, how about that?

All right, well, that's the that's the show.

I'm just kidding. All right, so look, if we get

who is it out of this race that would create the most buzz.

Let's do that. Is it chancellor?

Is that the one that if we get that horse, we'll start to get

full buzz on that on that guy? Or is it is it, you know, just

because of Brad Cox? If we get a patch Adams, is it

AI don't know what Hill Rd. Who's the most buzz?

Is it chancellor? Because I think for me it's

Chancellor. I would have to agree.

I think it's probably if Chancellor could win coming from

off the pace, then I think you're going to have full on

kind of Sierra Leone buzz, even though I, it's my personal

policy to not fall in love with the winner of a Tampa Bay Derby.

Like it's just that's, you know, end of transaction right there.

You did your job, you won. We're we're moving on now.

Wow. I can't believe you just

besmirched King Guillermo on this show like that.

That's exactly the horse I was talking about too.

I wow. So you try to do you try to do

nice things and have friends of berries on the show and and then

they should all over King Guillermo.

And I'm trying to have a civilization here where King

Guillermo's at the top of everything that we've ever done

on this show. And wow, boy, Zach, I, I don't

know that we can come back from this moment.

This is an ugly an ugly time. Like I got stabbed I this.

Is a real feat on the couch sort.

Of well, I'm gonna have to bring this back because the

connections, the connections really did me well with little

Victoria on on oh OK Pegasus Day.

So yeah, that key to $1700 pick 3 for me.

So yeah. Not little Vic.

Saves all. There you go.

No, the Victor Martinez jumping over the sofa when the horse

ran, what was it, second or third in the Louisiana Derby?

Something like that stands out as a really cool, cool moment

for sure. So hopefully we'll get more of

that, that kind of stuff. Do you have a Derby favorite

right now, guys? Did we see them last weekend?

Maybe a journalism, maybe a sovereignty, something like

that. Barnes, I know one of you

mentioned at least. Is there an actual Derby kid in

them? I think we've seen them.

I, I, I really think Barnes in in River Thames right now are

heading that class. OK, Chase.

I don't know, I'm not sure if we've seen them yet.

I I feel like somebody's got something under wraps somewhere

that they're going to drop on us, you know, in in mid-april

and it's going to be OK. Things are a little bit

different now. I just, you know, I, I know with

what I do, I'm supposed to have like a who's my Derby horse

take, but like I'm such like a slave to pace setups and

everything that like I, you know, I need to see everyone

together before I really feel like I have my my Derby horse

there. You go all right.

Well, he is Mr. at of Oak Lawn and Mr. at Urban Handicapper.

You can catch them on the Sports Gambling podcast network with

the notorious OTB pod. How many?

Five days a week now? Six days.

What are you guys doing? Five days 55.

It really is and look, if you're if you're like me and you just

want a spot play at Mahoning or just want a spot play at

Fairgrounds or whatever it is that is running that day, these

guys will get you hooked up. They are very, very near the top

of horse racing. If you just search horse racing

on Apple podcast, they're doing a great job putting out content.

So make sure you get in with Chase and you get in with Barry

especially. Look what part of the backbone

of our of our sport are those midweek tracks, right?

And I do, I get to do a bunch of work up in Indianapolis and I, I

love those folks and the horsemen up there and the

program in Indiana now. And obviously, you know, you

talk Mahoning and Thistle and those kinds of places, those are

really the backbone of what we do.

And so many of our best horses have come out of those midweek

allowances and that kind of stuff.

And so hopefully people are able to follow along there.

And you can do that with our friends at the notorious O2 B on

the SGP and Chase Man, really good to have you.

I'm sure we'll have you again. Tell people again where they can

find you. Yeah, you can always find me

being abrasive on Twitter at of Oakland.

That's like OF and then Oakland like the track.

You can follow the show at Notorious under SCORE OTV

because I was paying more attention when I made that

handle. And then you can always follow

the follow me on Instagram at Wolf of Oakland, where I am the

have that one for. Steve Oh, I know what you know

what he he can, but we we're going to have to negotiate.

So we're. Going to have.

Fair enough. I told you, if we get Kornacki

in a flat bill, I'm retiring. We're done.

right? A mission.

My life if I get Kornacki in South in South Ozone Park in a

flat bill maybe a number one he shows up and.

Bring my nice chain too so he can he can rock the, you know,

the 10 TS around the neck. There's so many things that need

to happen now and a nice chain comment just took us to the

level that we need to be at. That's it.

That that's the level we need to be at.
