right, knuckleheads, we're back. How's everybody doing?

It's So Cal Saturdays hanging out with Barry Spears.

My name's Lou Irmo, back for another week on the program

here. You know us up from this show

and literally nothing else, but thanks for joining us here.

Our presented by amwageramwager.com.

New customers can get in right now, 100% match up to $150.00

live in California. Go check them out right now if

you are new to the show. We hang out here every Friday,

try to pick winners on Saturday at whatever Southern California

track is running. Of course, we have moved our

focus very down to Del Mar. Happy Del Mar.

You weren't with us last week because your big time just went

up north. How are you, man?

You doing all right? Doing all right man.

Disappointed that I didn't get to do Del Mar opening weekend,

but it was. Pretty good John Lindo, by the

way. I know I missed him.

Show some royalty with John Lindo last week.

Appreciate him jumping. Yeah, man, that would have been

great to talk to the legend. But you know, we're here this

week and hopefully the the momentum continues.

It was a good racing weekend last weekend, so I gather this

week should be just as good. I I mean the card is is pretty

good this week. Yeah, tough chalk day yesterday,

but that happens once in a while on a random Thursday.

You know, those are things that happened.

But hopefully with the big races tomorrow, a lot of talent and

lots of these stake races, hopefully we'll get some some

upset winners. I think some chances at some

prices too, Barry, just in some of the state bread races, that

kind of stuff as well. So hopefully we'll be able to

pick out some of those for you today.

Again, Barry Spears, Louis Ribbo hanging out with you.

We are talking Del Mar Saturday if you are new to the show, so

we'll start with Race 1 maiden special for $80,000.

We're on the turf course going a mile and this is for three.

And up here, Barry, one of the few races where you and I landed

on the same horse on top of this one.

Seems pretty obvious. Yeah, Broski looks to be the

best of of these horses. You know, speed figure wise,

speed wise and everything else. I I usually normally don't like

horses who are old for 9. He's kind of races, but

everything kind of fits here. There's really not much in this

race, not much pedigree either. I think a lot of these horses

are kind of trying it out, seeing what they can do.

Broski looks like the best of the best.

Yeah, You and I both have the four and Tempest volat in our

handicapping as well. And by the way, I agree with

Barry. We both have the three on top

just for purposes of documenting our actual picks here.

But Leonard Powell picks up Tempest Volat here, the four

horse and Demuro, who's in from Italy to ride, you know, as an

Italian. Excuse me, who's in the ride for

the Delmar meet here? Hoping to get some mounts in the

Breeders Cup. We're on the turf here, so

you're gonna see his name. He has one for 10 to start the

meet. Does have 3 thirds though as

well. This is a horse, Barry, that

came out of a yielding maiden special run at Keeneland and

just never really got going. Was kind of just flat the whole

time, same pace the whole time. I'm hoping we just, you know,

change a scenery, new barn, get out West, maybe something a

little bit different. And frankly, Larapaul's 1/4 of

his last 18 with with horses new to his barn too.

So I think that's the kind of stat that I'm always looking for

as well 'cause that's north of 20%.

That's the kind of number I'm looking for to clean this out.

And then I went to the 6th and you know, a guy who could have a

really interesting day out West is Julian Leperoux, who is

shipping because Roland Joe is going to be in the grade one

Bing Crosby. We'll talk about that race later

in the card. He's got a bunch of mounts out

there. Obviously, Santos ain't doing a

good job making sure that he's got a bunch of mounts ready to

go there. I think this is an interesting

first timer man and Jabilion is the name of this one.

Jonathan Thomas, Sneaky good trainer out West as well.

Fourteen wins already this year and only 69 starts.

There's a horse that's been steadily working at Del Mar most

recently, but before that at Santa Anita.

His first turfers win at 19% as well.

So I landed 3-4 and six in here. I know you've got the five in

your handicap. Yeah, not only because I like

the name Prank Zappa. It's a good name, you're.

Right. You know, the makeover package

is something to grab onto. Like you know, just like you

were saying, change of scenery with the four.

The five is getting the makeover package blinkers on Lasix for

the first time. A run over the Delmar 5 for a

long turf course. Last year was really wide that

day. You can really strike a line

through that and see what we get this year.

Maybe a little bit of improvement as a three-year old,

who knows. I think it could get weird

behind Broski. So I put Prank Zappa in the

second spot. All right, well, we'll roll on

to race two-part of the early, the start of I should say the

early pick 4 here at Del Mar. We're talking Del Mar here on

Socal Saturday. Barry Spears lira bow hanging

out with you, $25,000 claimer here for non 2 life for six

furlongs on the dirt here, Barry 31,000 and the Kitty.

I'll go first in this race. You and I very different in this

one, but I think it speaks to no but honestly, if you're a horse

player, this is the kind of race you want to see on a card,

right? Lots of different horses can win

12 horse field. You like playing exactis you

like playing even supers. This is the kind of race you can

get down with. And so these are the kinds of

races that I love. So even when I see very

different handicapping between the two of us, I think good.

You know, there might be some money in here.

I'll go outside and a guy who has not slowed down in Southern

California is Antonio Frasu, who won the San Anita riding title

and is off to a really, really fine start at Del Mar as well.

Seven of his first 28 to begin the meeting had them out on this

one previously. Last out in at this level, but

this is second off the layoff for Mark Glatt, who wins at 36%

doing that, Barry. And so I'm looking for this

horse to be really, really ready to fire in this spot.

This is also getting back to dirt.

So this is one that tried turf last time.

We'll get back to dirt here where the horse did break its

maiden running at Del Mar in September last year.

Got that first start on the turf in June.

Probably just grabbed A grabbed a race where they knew they

could throw the horse in for this kind of tag.

Is not in for the tag here, right?

Doesn't have to be in this spot. And so gets to avoid the tag

here. I'll go outside to Captain

Sparrow on top here. You went in the middle of the

pack here with the five in City of Angels.

If you're right, 5:00 to 1:00, nice number.

Yeah, this horse hasn't been out in a while.

And, and for as long as I can remember, Mike Pipi has been

very, very good with horses off longer layoffs.

This one, no exception. And, you know, his stats to date

are, are reflective of that. You know, I had a hard time

trying to find horses that could actually win this race.

A lot of these horses are are, you know, they're in and out,

you know, fall into form. Fall out of form.

Sure. This horse was kind of the most

consistent even though he hasn't been out in a while.

I thought that the layoff really shouldn't matter too, too much

because it is a Sprint race and you know, this is wide open.

I mean, these, these fields have really gotten competitive since

the Northern California horses have have kind of joined the

population and you know, you get these big fields and races like

this. I, I think this is a wide open

race and I'll give City Angels the the nod at 5:00 to 1:00

here. You've got the five on top that

he with the special club 5:00 to 1:00 to 6:00 to 1:00 here.

Elliott into ride by the way, had a nice day at Saratoga

yesterday for Craig Lewis in this one a son of clubhouse ride

a four year old gelding here first time gelding.

Is that what? Is that part of the angle you

like here A. Little bit not really the

overriding factor. I think this horse ran pretty

well at a higher claiming price previously drops into this spot

and there's not too, too much speed and this horse will

probably be forwardly placed. Elliott does a really good job

of getting horses in position early.

I don't think that's going to be an exception here, and just the

fact that he's going to be up close will probably keep him

around. Loud recruit breaks right next

to him. Abel Oscano gets the ride there

for Brian Corner. Sneaky great start, 3 for eight

for Abel Oscano to start at Del Mar.

And this is one that hasn't run since November of last year.

We're seeing a lot of horses come off of extended layoffs

here, Barry, And this is part of the thing that we talk about

with, hey, can you run that race again?

I love the works recently for this one, the most recent at Del

Mar. Before that though, we look at

the June 29th work at Santa Anita really, really fast, sub

48 kind of time. I think this one, it's just fast

enough to do it. A son of a son of Nyquist here.

It's incredible to see Nyquist babies in these guys are races.

But this is a tough game for a reason.

And I just think Wilder Crude's got a real shot here.

And I love the price for sure off this kind of layoff.

Brian Corner has won four of his last 12.

That's a huge, huge strike rate. Yeah, it's a big number for me.

And so, yes, a smaller sample size, Barry, on that number.

But at least it's getting done and I know where I can look for

it. And the four for me in Targary

is is a 15 to one shot for Edwin Maldonado and Luis Mendez in

this spot was not great at a mile last out on the turf.

Remember, we're getting back to sprinting on the dirt here where

the horse has run second before at this form did run well.

I thought back in March at six furlongs on the turf and then

before that broke its maiden going 6 furlongs on the turf.

I think for Luis, this is an attempt to try to figure out if

this horse just even wants to Sprint.

But at 15 to 1, I trust Edwin Maldonado to have this one in

the equation. You'd like the seven here to

fill out your trifecta. The likely favorite?

Self-sufficient. Yeah, I, I really don't like

this horse that much. You know, it, it, it's just

really strange and, and you don't see too many horses owned

by Ripoli drop down into a condition claimer and run.

Well, the the few times that I've seen it, they really

haven't run all that good. This one just might be the best

of the rest and that's why I put in the third spot all.

Right there you go. Did work well the other day.

So if the bullet works matter to you, that one has one to show 4

we'll move on to race 3. This starts a pick 3 here as

well. 50 Cent pick three's out there at Del Mar 5 furlongs on

the turf course here. It is a state bred optional

claimer for Phillies and mares who are three and up who have

never won more than $21,000 blah blah blah.

On the condition book there Barry, but you and I landed.

We both have the six in our handicapping, but you landed on

the 8 here. No cap, as the kids would say.

Kazushi Kimura. That's actually, you know what?

That's a nice double entendre. I didn't even think about that.

You landed on the 8. No cap is a nice double

entendre. Me.

Look at me. That's a really that's a that's

me using a a slangy double entendre Berry, which in this

shirt is not what people expect. How about that?

You know, English majors are are loving it right now, but you

know, no, Cap honestly really doesn't appear to be a turf

horse on paper. The two races that she did have

were pretty decent and getting to this spot where really nobody

it, it doesn't look like on paper anybody really would want

to win this race, which makes it all competitive.

The five Miranda I I just don't have any confidence in.

There's a lot of speed in this race that may hinder that

horse's chances. No cap has just been really

consistent at this same level. Why not?

We'll give that one a try and and erase that again, another

wide open race. This card might might have a lot

of fireworks early. Especially this early pick five.

That's exactly right. I totally agree with you.

I do think Darlin, Tammy, the Billy Ante, Georgie Mount here,

he is over 10 to start the meet. So let's go ahead and break.

So you know, and Jeff Bondy's over three.

You know what, let's go ahead and just break all that

together. We're over 13 combined.

Let's just go ahead and put those things aside here, Barry,

and have this horse who just ran at LaSalle and I thought really

well most previously against Winters for the first time and I

thought she showed just enough for me to include her here.

Maybe she didn't like that slight turn to the right there

at Los Alamitos and it slowed her down a little bit.

Won't have to do that here. I think if we get that race

where she broke her maiden at Santa Anita, I think she can win

here. And so I think that's six to one

totally fair price. And I understand why it's 6:00

to 1:00 as well with that Bondy and Auntie Georgie connection.

They're over 14 to get together historically.

And so I totally get it. But again, you and I are trying

to figure it out in a field. Where do you want to win?

Here, ma'am, is a real question for many of these horses.

You have the six in your second spot here, but you've got the

two in the third spot in Cayucos.

Yeah, there's a possibility where this horse could improve

off that slight layoff since April 18th, Richard Mandela.

This is a a curious placement for this horse, especially how

this horse's career started to get to the turf and and this

horse really ran poorly. I I would say in the only turf

try. That being said, they laid this

horse off again a little bit second time Lasix.

There might be some improvement here there.

There's not a whole bunch in this race.

So you know, this horse going to the lead and kind of sticking

around is is quite a possibility.

I think the three's interesting here in Summer Lake, 4 to one on

the line for Ricardo Gonzalez and Carla Gaines.

Carla Gaines not great off of this kind of layoff, but I like

the move from down the hill back to flat ground.

This horse has one run well down the hill.

Not gonna not gonna die under Antonio Frazee, but I do like

the move back to getting to flat ground.

This one broke its maiden going a mile at Del Mar before, so has

one over the turf course here as well.

I think getting to the Sprint will be totally fine.

This one breaks just fine out of the gate.

Has done that even going down the hill most recently in April,

but in turf spreadsheet was at 15% and the two of them together

at about 12%. And so for a guy like Ricardo

Gonzalez who as well by the way, 2 for six to start the meet at

Del Mar and this is what we talk about when we talk about these

kinds of payouts Barry and these kind of sort of wild early parts

of the sequence. I think summer Lake's got a

serious shot here and that's a Carla Gaines Ricardo Gonzalez

kind of combination there in race three.

We're talking Del Mar with you hanging out with am wager am

wager.com for all the good stuff happening over there.

Just a beautiful, beautiful set up for horse players.

They've got all of the great, great tools over there.

It's certainly a platform designed by horse players for

you the horse player as well. So go check them out amwager.com

Race 4 sets up next and this will be a maiden special weight

and we are back to the 2 year olds here.

What are you laughing at? What you doing?

What you doing to me? What?

You doing this this race is another wide open race that

makes me laugh because you know, I hope, I really hope this

doesn't chalk out this pick 5 this early pick 5 because that

would be very disappointing considering the fields and how

wide open they look like on paper.

I'd be disappointed with a a short pick 5.

Are you saying a race with ten horses and one start total

between all of them is a difficult race to predict?

Barry, how dare you? How dare you put that in front

of our listening audience of of dozens of people?

How dare you do that? You understand me?

What a terrible thing for you to do today on a Friday.

But it is race for it is a maid special weight.

We're running for $100,000 five for 5 1/2 furlongs.

Excuse me on the dirt there. Open company here for 2 year

olds, Barry, boy oh boy. I think a ton of ways that you

could go here, whether you trust people who are good with two

year olds, people who are good with the maiden specials, first

timers, trust the second timer here.

I wouldn't fight you almost on what, 80% of the horses in this

race, 8 out of 10 have a significant shot, Is that right?

Yeah, that's probably right. 7 out of 10, maybe something like

that. I mean, it's it's a, it's a fun

one. That's good.

I like this car. That's a good one.

What do you? Got so I went to the 6th

Intrepido. I like this work pattern on this

horse and you know, Jeff Mullins does a really good job getting

horses prepared to run first time out.

Yes, you go. You can see the progression with

the horse getting longer and longer workouts and they

actually get better. You know, it's the only thing

that I could really grab onto with with any of these horses.

I mean, there's not really much pedigree to, to talk about with

a lot of these horses, at least initially, but I, I like the

progression that Intrepido has and it may translate onto the

track. You know, Mullins does very well

with first time starters, so why not give him a shot?

I I mean, in particular that the workout on July 3rd and July

10th kind of stuck out to me and then the 19th was like kind of a

maintenance work, but it was still 5 furlongs and I think

this horse is really prepared to win.

You know, he's got a bit of, it's interesting to watch him

because couple years ago here in Kentucky we had to watch, had

to, we got to watch. We were fortunate to watch Norm

Cassie become kind of a 2 year old whisperer.

It was really fun to watch. We're watching that kind of

happen out West, in this case with intrepid Own a guy like

Jeff Mullins, who's now three for his last 7 with second with

a 2 year old starting. And so it's fun to watch guys

get better or when people get better horse people get better

in general with these sorts of different different challenges

within the sport. And certainly he's turned into

that. And like you said, he's won four

of his last 16 with first timers as well.

So I mean, the numbers are right there. 4 intrepido, especially

at that price, and I think you'll get every bit of that

price. By the way, I think that's

totally a reasonable price that you're definitely gonna get.

I I went boring here. I went other Baffert ish so not

the one Hernandez bafford. I went the.

I went the Pratt Bafford. OK.

OK, I guess ish $3,000,000 purchase for Zidane Racing.

I'll go with that one I guess. Why not?

Yeah. Over the $875,000 purchase,

let's spend, let's spend normal money on horses.

Let's do that together people. And so I went 8845 in here.

So civil liberty. Second, this is purely based on

works. Barry, I'm stunned you don't

have the four on top here. Based on the gate works, I'm I'm

very, very surprised by that. You know, honestly, that's

that's sort of a red flag when there's too many, there's too

many gate works. You know it it the horse is

running fast out of the. Gate, you understand too much of

a good thing. Right, there's there's AI guess

a healthy balance there between gate works and and regular works

that it wouldn't cause for concern.

Not really a a big concern, but when there's no form, you got to

split hair somewhere. The five Balboa seems very

logical in this spot. I like that this horse actually,

I think owns the longest, fastest gate work closest to the

race, which was on June 29th, one minute and two handling from

the gate. Those kind of works are go a

long way in these two year old races.

So I I think that one's prepared.

And then the seven who I used on the bottom AP again is 1/2 to a

horse named Schwarzmeiser Schwarzmeyer.

Sorry, it was 4 for 9 lifetime and and show some run.

It's a pretty decent horse. I believe it's in the Urton barn

right now, but a horse can run a little bit and why not, you

know, a little, a little bit of pedigree where there's not much

to go off of in this race. Yeah, so I also like the five in

here. That's the other Baffert.

So I expect either Baffert or Doug O'Neill to win a way to Del

Mar. What a stunner.

Well, great job, Louis. Wait a wait.

A handicap. Southern California.

What a what a genius. You must be over there.

No chalk zone, right? Oh, chalk zone at all.

That's right, my whole life, no chalk at all.

Just how I look. All right, so Race 5 coming up

next year. The program, it is an optional

claimer here. Another state bread for Phillies

and mares 3 and up, which have never won more than $21,000

other than maiden and some other kinds of races. 5 furlongs on

the turf here. Boy, oh, boy, Barry, if you can

hit some turf sprints, you can make some money at Del Mar on

Saturday. This does start another pick

three. It will close the early pick 5.

Barry, I'll go first here. I landed on the seven as you

did. And so that is a good sign for a

long shot in guilty of having fun.

Armando Ayuso gets them out here for an Andy Mathis horse off the

bench, and we know what we think about Andy Mathis horses.

They win a third of their races when they were off the bench

just like this. So I do expect this horse to run

big. Two of them not combined on a

winner of Del Mar just yet, but I think this will be the one

Berry. We've seen this horse run really

well in one mile turf races before and certainly over the

sprints as well. I'm throwing out the last race

Barry, just because I that was fourth in the form cycle.

I think the horse was probably just tired.

The last time we saw this horse, first time off the layoff, it

almost won a mile race as a maiden and only lost by 1/2

length. And so I'm trusting Andy Mathis

in this case to have this horse ready off the work or off the

bench. Excuse me, Works have been a

little slow, but my sense of this horse is that it never

works fast. And so I landed on the seven on

top like you did. We landed on the eighth and

second spot. Young Love next to that.

Do you want to add anything to the seven horse there?

I I think this horse guilty having fun is going to get a

great trip. There's not a whole hell of a

lot of speed in this race and this horse going to sit a really

good stalking trip. I would hope you know, next to

young love. I I think those two will

dominate the the front end and and finish 1/2. 7-8 for Barry

and me on top. You landed on the 10 in the

third spot. I landed on Blue Wildcat.

Roberto Rispoli goes back up or this one.

Who has been better at this level?

Lots of times hitting the board, Barry 6 times hitting the board,

no wins this year. Three times hitting the board,

no wins last year in five races. So that's why I have that horse

in my third spot here for him, pretty capping because I do

assume that horse will be part of the equation for a trifecta

superfecta kind of play. You have a much longer shot

later on in this one. And back on track, Jose

Valdivia, junior riding for Paulo Capestro.

What do you what do you like about this one?

This horse's turf races aren't that bad, may have just not been

running in the right spots. This is a really good spot for

this horse at this level. I I think this horse fits here

and ran a decent race back last May at the $50,000 level, state

bred Phillies and on the turf with Valdivia as well.

Now this year coming out of that race on June 29th, which was an

open 40, getting Lasix, I've seen worst 20 to one shots to be

honest, and I've bet on worst 20 to one shots.

Sure. I thought she was really good

last time. Yeah, yeah.

I'll take it. I mean she it looks on paper

like she improved. And we talk all the time about

transferring from turf to LaSalle.

Why couldn't a horse come back off of LaSalle back to the turf?

I totally agree with that. Yeah, I'm down.

If this source finishes in the money, we might be going to

Sizzler. I just had a moment thinking of

George Costanza. I with the guy, the cool

Elaine's cool boyfriend. He turns his hat around

backwards. Got the little crunch, you know,

the scrunchy in the middle. I'm down, I'm I'm I'm down.

You turned into George Spencer for no reason, a much more

successful person than that guy. All right, race 6 moving on.

We're presented by Amwager. This is the horse racing happy

hour sub Cal Saturdays. Louis and Barry are back and

better than ever, as they used to say on ESPN.

We're going a mile in the next one.

State bread race for Phillies again, optional 20 for 81,000 in

the purse here. There's a big boy race coming in

here. This is the California

equivalent of the old $80,000 optional claimer here in

Kentucky. Big race here, Barry.

As far as contenders, you and I landed on the 2 on top here.

And unlike the other races where we had the same horse on top,

I'll let you go first here. Yeah, this is.

This is the a very boring play of the day here.

It's a court, just looks. Way, man, I like that term a

lot. Oh, I'm creating a banner.

There's boring play of the day. Yeah.

Oh, look how good that looks. Oh, let's be boring together.

Oh, go ahead. Yeah, we're, we're chalking it

out here. It's a court.

It's just a kind of a stand out on paper.

Speed wise, should get the lead or be close to it and kind of

dominate. I don't really see too much

after this horse, but it's a court just looks much the best.

Yeah, I landed on Nancy Griffith, which is a great name

in the six hole here for Armando IU.

So coming back off the turf, man, if we go back the race

before that, yeah, it was 6 furlongs, but look at that

level, man. That's a 50,000 level on the

starter allowance side of things.

Sorry, it's not a boring play anymore.

On the starter allowance side before that, running at that

level again, we get to drop into the 20 level here.

I don't think anyone's noticing how much of A drop that is for

Steve Miotti and Armando Ayuso here.

And I just turf the dirt for, for, for Steve Miotti is a 22%

ratio as well. So I think this one's got a

really, really big shot. So I'm 26 and 9.

You and I both have the 9 here. You went five in the second spot

here. Nothing is forever.

Yeah, kind of the best of the rest should pick up the pieces

late. Like I said, this is very, very

boring. This is probably as boring as

I'm going to get. But one word on on the Nancy

Griffith. It just depends on how strong

you think those restricted races are.

Oh, I. Agree.

Yes. You know cuz some of them were

very strong and others weren't, so you definitely have to think

twice before going there. I mean this horse speed wise,

the 6th is very competitive in this spot.

So I would think that those would translate very well here.

You have the five in there. I do think Lady Montclair, by

the way, and the seven is interesting as well.

Doesn't win very often, but this is the distance for this horse.

You've seen some good results going a mile on the turf as

well. 2 back at Santa Anita, an optional claimer at this level,

finished third behind a horse in this race as well.

I think at 5:00 to 1:00 with Flavian picking up the mount

there. I think that one's worth

watching there as well. Barry Spears, Luther Beau

hanging out with you. We move on to Race 7.

We're going through the entire card like we do every week in

Southern California here on So Cal Hi today.

Thanks for hanging out with us today.

Made special here. This does start the late pick 5.

Excuse me. We're going a mile on the turf

course here. It's for two year old Philly.

So we're already going a mile with the 2 year old's Barry,

which means it is the end of July.

Love it very, very much. Another one that was a little

difficult to pick out a winner, but I got to say, Barry, this is

a, this is an instance where I think the the morning line

favorite, I don't see it at all. Won't happen.

And I and I just and I'm not picking on anybody when I do the

following analysis, I promise. But Michael McCarthy for how

good he is with high end horses. And this is a high end horse.

OK, I want to be clear. The daughter city of light tap

it on the damn side like this is a this is a royally bred horse.

I'm not I'm not pushing this horse's royalty aside.

He's 5% first timers, man. Like this isn't this isn't what

he does. Like she may turn out to be

awesome as a four year old. I don't know.

But first timers, Barry, no, they didn't want, I think.

They I think they got the seven and the 8 flip-flopped.

You think that's what happened here?

I think so. Because I like the in here and

you do too. We both like the five as well.

You landed on the 9 on top though.

Remember April 2nd time we're here, Timmy Acti.

Yeah you know he has two in here and soaring angels gonna take

all the money being 1/2 to Johannes I I would think that

horses is definitely going to get bet down to favoritism.

But the stablemate, the nine, remember April, the dam won 550K

on the turf. Cordiality, very good horse.

And they gave this horse a run at Los Al and it doesn't seem

like the intent was to win. Now that this horse lands in

this spot, I think they're going to really try and and hopefully

this horse, you know, flies a little bit on the radar.

We get a little higher than that, 8 to 1 and get all the

money when it's all said and done.

Barry 985 here. I am 458 in this one.

Let me tell you about the four there in in.

I am on the right race. OK, Mama glows 1 here.

Go with the second timer myself here.

Barry, Kyle Frey O for 15 to start the meet, but 4 seconds

2/3 he's bound to get off the Schneider at some point.

Doug O'Neill the the stats are really difficult with him

because he's just willing to run horses that are in good form.

He's a bit of a Wayne Lucas West of the Rock.

He's a Kitty Mcpeak if you will. You just see his horses run if

they're ready to go. But this is a daughter of

Nyquist. I think she's going to be better

the second time out. We saw her at Indiana go the two

turns under Evan Roman and even though she didn't finish well or

in the money or whatever, she did pass a horse at the end of

the race and I like that. This is a daughter of Malibu

June as well, a Malibu Moon sire dam here.

I just think the the this is Royal Breeding.

At some point this horse is going to turn it on.

Work from the gate the other day.

The gate works haven't been great, but I get a mile to sort

that out. So I think the four in here is

an interesting play. Like I said, the five of the 8

for both of us. What did you like about Olivia?

I like a lot about her too. Mostly Ryan Hansen, he does a

really great job getting horses prepared first time out.

This one looks to be no exception.

A lot of four and five furlong works.

This horse seems to be a little bit fast, has a little bit of

pedigree as well. Will probably be dismissed on

the board thanks to you know, got the ring City Lady and

Soaring Angel. Maybe the best of the rest, but

it really wouldn't surprise me if this horse won.

City Lady would break an O for 23 record for Mike McCarthy.

Trainer Mike McCarthy debuting a horse at more than a mile.

The San Diego Handicap is race eight.

Grade 2 here. Barry $300,000 races for three

and up at a mile and a 16th. We see the return of some

horses. Certainly people know.

Nisos. The headliner here at 3:00 to

5:00. Miramati is in this race.

Express train Hall of Fame, Tarantino, Judge Miller of

course, if you watch if you watch West Coast racing was very

effective in the Californian in the Gold Cup last year.

We both like Nisos on top here and Barry is there is there a

reason to worry about the mile on the 16th?

I, I, I think after the Lewis last year, the two turns at the

mile, I'm just not worried about it.

I would say no. I mean, I guess it it it will

always be in concern until the horse actually does it.

However, I don't. Think 10 furlongs, right?

I mean like 8 1/2 is so different.

Yeah, right. Yeah, the, I mean, there's

really not much in this race. Miramati is probably not at this

level and Nico's going to use that horse as a target and it it

just looks like it's really set up for that horse to win.

Express Train is an 8 year old. He's running well honestly.

You know, his last start behind Locked and he beat Hit Show.

Got to count for something when you're 8 years old.

But I agree I you know the rest of them.

The only one that I could see that might be able to win would

be Hall of Fame. OK, what do you like about Hall

of Fame? You know, he's been running with

better competition actually on the East Coast.

And maybe the change of scenery is, is what all this horse

needed. I, I thought he was kind of

fledgling, you know, not getting over the hump as as people would

say. And the other concern is Lasix.

He's run way better performances with Lasix than without.

That's always a concern. But he still should be better

than most of these horses. I I just think Nisos is too good

here. Yeah, I think Nisos is too good

as well. I am really fascinated by the

inclusion by Mark Glad of Judge Miller on the outside.

Now, this is a horse that did run well in the Gold Cup and the

Californian, I think he thinks with the Curlin breeding, the

Bernardini mare, etcetera, I think he thinks he's got a horse

that wants to go the two turns. So I'm gonna use Judge Miller as

my cold exacta here. Are you using Hit Show as the

cold exacta or Hall of Fame? Excuse me?

Yeah, yeah. Hall of Fame I I like, but Judge

Miller is interesting. You know, I have the notion that

this horse might be better on turf going two turns, but we'll

see. I mean, it wouldn't surprise me

if this horse ran well. I just don't like the fact that

this horse kind of loses ground when he goes longer on the dirt

and he kind of runs like a turf horse on dirt.

So we'll see. Yeah, he, he seems to get

discouraged in certain races, right?

And if he gets that here, he's done.

I mean, he'll finish last in this field.

There's a bunch of hard knockers in this race, right?

I mean, a bunch of guys forever and whatever else.

I mean, there's a bunch of horses in here.

I mean, say whatever you want about Express train.

I mean that's a horse has run 25 * 19 times in the money and he

ain't running in crap company dude.

No, I mean he's. Picking up checks dude.

He's already made 100K this year.

I don't think he's finished worse than fourth in a long

time. Long time and and so there's a

bunch of horses and you mentioned Hall of Fame say what

you want about Tarantino that's a horse that's finished in the

money 17 of his 30 lifetime starts.

I mean you know no no no this is a this is a hard knock your

group and if judge Miller gets in his feelings at all be a lot

of hurt. I'm not kidding because I

there's just so many horses in here that just don't care,

right? Just show up and do the job.

So this is so Cal Saturday hanging out.

Barry Spears lawyer boat. We've got you every single

Friday right here previewing the card in Southern California.

Of course we are at Del Mar. It is Bing Crosby day and it is

time to talk Bing Crosby late pick 3.

Very great news here. You weren't on last week when we

got to talk about this, but Delmar did adopt the late pick

three, which I love. This $3 minimum 15% take out.

So that starts here in race 9. If you are playing the races, we

encourage you go check out our friends at amwageramwager.com.

They've got you all set up, especially if you are a new

customer. 100% deposit match up to $150.00.

I lied. The Daisy cutter is race 9.

We're on the turf here going 5 furlongs.

Barry, I love this race, my goodness, Especially because I

think if you don't like Uncorked, there's an

unbelievable amount of value in this spot.

You did not land on Uncorked, you land on Chiefs Mosa, who we

just talked about a couple weeks ago on the show.

Yeah, I don't. I don't like Uncorked at all, to

be honest with you. I hope that horse does get bet

because I think Chismosa, although isn't strictly A turf

horse, has run really well on the turf and the class relief I

think will make all the difference here in this spot.

This horse has been running with the best of the best wasn't

embarrassed at all at any point by by last out or even before

that loss to sweet Azteca who's who's razor sharp and this horse

didn't embarrass himself at all or herself.

And if you go through the past performances, super shine was

was sharp at the time the source lost in the misdirection just

never had a chance. So those races.

Like a seven month layoff too. Exactly and and the horse seems

to be in perfect form now and going to give his best effort.

This is not the greatest field, is very competitive and and I

think the class relief helps get the job done for Chismosa.

I have her in my. I don't have her.

I'm a liar. Oh.

No 9. Sorry, No 8.

No 8, I have 9:00, so I apologize.

I do have pushiness on the outside and #110 horse here

comes out of a second place finish, picks up Juan Hernandez

Umberto jumping off here, which is very interesting to me.

I just think this is the most consistent horse in this field.

Barry hasn't won on the turf and I think she's still a worthy

favorite here. Never missed the board. 2nd and

3rd going on the turf. This is the third race in a row

on the turf as well. Did try the Del Mar turf last

summer, Excuse me, in August in an optional claimer, finishing

less than 3/4 with length. My essential hope here, Barry,

is that Juan just gets this horse over the line.

The horse is always there, it's less than a length all the time.

Just get this horse over the line 1st and that's what I'm

hoping with pushing us here and Juan Hernandez.

Just inside though is Giovanni Franco, and he'll be up for Phil

D'amato, a horse that just ran in the misdirection and hated

it. But if you go back to on Granny

Budgie, we all have a Granny Budgie in our life, people.

It's OK. This horse did win an optional

claiming company going 6 furlongs on the turf at Santa

Anita. Now, this one's gonna need to

come from off the pace a little bit, and I don't know that

that's the best tactic in here, but you're going to have a

pushiness who's going to want to go.

So you got a horse next to you that if you can keep pace at

all, or at least have a target to run at, you're going to have

it. And that's going to be pushing

us there. So I can think Granny Budgie

here is an interesting spot. I'm mostly going on that flat

last two races at Santa Anita, one in an optional claimer at

the $100,000 level, one in the optional claiming $80,000 level.

To me, that's a horse that can absolutely get there.

I'd love that 8 to 1 price. So I went 10-9 and six in here.

Barry, you went eight and then four.

What do you like about Hanging Ash?

Another horse that we talked about on this.

You know, Hanging Ash was a horse that I connected with back

in March and this spot in particular is, is very good for

a horse like Angin Ash. This horse seems to like the

flat rather than the downhill at Santa Anita, which is a good

thing. The fire speed figures are

competitive with everybody else in this field and 20 to 1 seems

like a stretch, but you never know.

I, I, I mean, I'll, I'll be honest, I thought pushiness only

has one horse to beat to the front and that's the two I'm

about to go. If this if that horse clears,

it's going to be tough to beat. She's she's definitely going to

be tough to beat. But if I'm about to go does go

heads up right with pushiness, then that opens it up for horses

like Andrew and Ash and also Tsismoso and Granny Budgie.

But I thought Andrew and Ash is resumes good enough for this

horse to kind of make an appearance here?

Barry, you're getting some love from our guy JD Fox at Horse

Tickets on the Twitter and Janash 2 for 25 furlongs of Del

Mar. Much better as a flat sprinter

than down the hill at Santa Anita.

Love you guys. We love you, JD.

Yeah, we do. We do no, but no that these are

the kinds of angles where you and I are always looking for

because and we and we joke about it, but it's a real thing.

They run everything in Southern California as far as turf

racing, right? Yeah.

We're running a mile and a half and you've got to cross a dirt

or a mile and a quarter. You got to cross a dirt path to

get there. You got to run 6 1/2 flat.

You're going to run 6 1/2 down the hill.

It's 5 furlongs flat at Del Mar. I mean, they literally run

everything. So you really got to scour the

sheet to try to find some of this, you know, some of these

options. And, and I, I'm not going to

argue with anybody that makes the case for Ang and ash.

I do think on cork, just because of the the Flavian factor will

probably get tossed in my tickets.

I know that's but I'm going to toss that horse.

In boring play of the day. No, Louis's going to play of the

day. Do you know what happened to me?

I interviewed Tyler and he went 5 for seven to start the Ellis

Park meet and then I went. You know what?

Maybe these jockeys do matter, you know?

Just a little sometimes. Yeah, that's something I need to

be watching out for. Can't fall off?

You don't want to do that. That is a real thing, folks.

The 10th race is the big boy, it's the grade one Bing Crosby.

It is a win and in for the Breeders Cup.

Der Sprint 6 furlongs on the dirt where they will hold the

Breeders Cup at Del Mar $400,000 on the line here, 3 and up in

this one. Interesting, interesting field,

Barry. I was surprised to see world

Record getting favoritism here. The morning line maker, very

clearly a Pratt fan in this spot.

But we see Hijazi out of the Baffert barn.

We see Doctor Venkman out of that Mark Glatt barn.

Crazy Mason's a nice horse here. Roll on.

Big Joe, who just beat Doctor Venkman in the Kelly's Landing,

is back to the West Coast at a place at Del Mar where the horse

has run well before. Where did you land in the win

and in Bing Crosby? Well, my, my idea and hope is

that Hijazi world record and roll on Big Joe kind of tussle

up front early and leave all of that for Mr. Venkman, Dr.

Venkman to watch and roll on past.

I, I mean, this horse had two tough beats.

The triple bend, not so much because Nicos kind of just ran

away, but that Kelly's landing. I, I kind of thought that Doctor

Venkman just didn't get his best shot because nobody pressured

roll on Big Joe and he just kept rolling rolling.

Big Joe's a really nice horse. And he's a nice horse.

He has a high cruising speed and when he turns it off, he's still

faster than most horses and then he'll kick it into gear and, and

you can't catch him. Once he gets brave, hopefully

those other two horses can can make it difficult for him and

and and set it up for Doctor Vankman.

He is not at the level yet at all.

But I'm not gonna lie to you. Roll on, Big Joe.

Reminds me a lot of Whitmore. Yeah gelded later in life he's

starting to roll a little bit wins that Palos Verdes, comes E

to Churchill, wins an optional claimer at a high level, rolls

it back into Kelly's land and goes ahead and wins it 5 to 1

heads out West for the Bing Crosby now can really establish

himself as one of the the important sprinters in our

sport. And what's interesting about

this one Barry is and I have him on top.

I have him on top in this race partly because I love that six

to one number and partly because I don't usually use Julian

Leperoux in sprints. But this horse is so fast.

The only job here is don't make mistakes keep him clear.

Hold on Big Joe, just keep him clear 'cause if you give him a

clear path, guess what ain't nobody catching him.

He's that fast and so just let him go I've got him on top.

I just think he's growing into himself and look, I know he's

the son of perspective. I I get it.

But we have seen way weirder things than horses getting to

stick around and be 5 year old, you know, 5 year old geldings

and and just get to turn into whatever it is they are.

And what I love is, frankly, 2 of his best performances are

without Lasik's. They were in the Palace Raiders,

they were in the Kelly's Landing.

Both of those were some of his very best performances.

And so I'm hopeful that he'll go out there and I'll get a price

and he'll be he'll be running up the track.

I know you have him in your handicapping, so it's not as

though you're dismissing him at all.

And you said very nice things about him earlier on.

So I don't want to make it feel that way at all.

But what do you like about smooth cruising in here?

Smooth cruising. It's kind of a horse that you

can't, you can't trust. You probably shouldn't be 20 to

one on the morning line because he probably has a better chance

than that. But he needs a setup and, and I

don't know if he's faster than a horse like Doctor Frankman to

get that done. So we'll see.

But I I thought a horse in Crazy Mason who ran down Quince Brew

in the Carter when we were there, Mayor, it's a good shot

because there's a possibility that this race could totally

meltdown. And if that happens, Crazy Mason

is is the most likely to pick up all the pieces.

OK. More than Doctor Bankman.

Yeah, if it if it, if the pace just absolutely goes nuclear,

then yes, Crazy Mason will will pick them all up.

Man, I wish I had George W Bush say nuclear.

That'd have been great. What a great.

Drop that, Oh well, we can't do that.

Our last race of the day closing out the show here was headed by

AM Wager, Am wager.com. New customers right now 100%

deposit match up to $150.00 live in California.

Go check them out our friends at AM Wager and Am wager.com. 5-6

and nine is where I landed in the last race here.

Barry, as he will disagree with me.

It's an optional claimer going a mile on the turf course there

$40,000 is the claim price, $81,000 is the per price turf

price. This is for three-year olds and

up, which you've never won one $21,000 or more in more than one

spot here. Barry, I'll let you go first.

You lay down the 9:00 here in the last horse last race.

Excuse me, a day to remember Mark Glatt in Abel Escana.

Yeah, this is actually the horse I like the most on the card.

Funny enough, this horse is stretching out out of American

Pharaoh and Kendall, who's a nice horse who did a lot of turf

sprinting. But there's a horse that this

horse is 1/2 to by the name of Palazzi who like to go long on

the turf. So there's that potential there

being out of American Pharaoh, Pioneer the Nile.

This horse should run all day. It's it's really all about the

trip. I just don't want them to get

into a speed duel. If this horse settles behind the

speed, I think this horse is going to be ultra tough and I

think they can do it. I have Cuban confusion on top,

not just because I love the name, but Umberto gets them out

here. It's a horse coming out of a

maiden win, and it took this horse 14 times to break its

maiden. But since the horse has been

stateside, Barry has only run in maiden specials at Santa Anita.

All of them, three of them at a mile.

Excuse me? They tried this one spreading

just to try it and didn't work. Second, third, second, first.

OK, so this horse is clearly getting better.

Gets to keep Lasix here. All of the things, the speed

last time 223 and change 46 and change 135 that can win in this

company. And I think Roberto's gonna give

this one the best possible chance to win in here as well.

The six next to him fly over I think is a really fascinating

horse only third race ever getting out though of state

bread company is why I have this horse 2nd instead of first

phrase who's riding out of his mind right now in Southern

California great at Santa Anita. He's been really really good as

well at at Del Mar. If you place that if you play

him win place you're gonna you're gonna catch somebody at

this point. But this one you know sprints to

break its maiden comes back as by the way all is a four year

old didn't run before his four year old year comes back wins

for the first time going a mile. This is the second time trying

the mile as well. I just think this one sets up

really well and I might even go really short at the end of the

ticket here and go 5-6, except that I have the 9 third.

And I really agree with you about day to remember because we

see so many horses on this circuit go from six, 6 1/2 on

the turf to a mile. And because of their speed,

they're able to pick up those pieces and just figure it out.

Barry the No Horse no No set up in the world makes a better case

for you about how turns don't matter then 6 furlong horses

going to a mile in Southern California.

Oh yeah, and. It's the best evidence for you

that there is. You're still wrong, but it's the

best evidence that there is for you.

It's that there is for you. And so I'm 569 here.

I totally agree with you about the 9:00.

That's when you got to throw in you have the one second in your

Souchet coming out of France has tried 11 different times with

two wins to break its maiden and then you know comes out of a a

couple of allowance races overseas.

But this is John Sadler, who's really good with first timers in

North America. Yeah, his horses that he gets

newly when he turns them back on the track, they do very, very

well. This horse was running good on

the synthetic and also at Shanty got a firm turf course one of

those days which was amazing back in April and and ran a

pretty good race that day in allowance over there in France.

And just by pure class or the horses that this horse has been

running against should be competitive in this spot

automatically. Not to mention the fact that

this horse hasn't isn't coming off a super long layoff.

This horse ran in May. I think this one merits a good

shot. I'm not sure about that number

of eight to one. I gather this horse is going to

get bad a little bit, plus getting Lasix Sadler does well.

I would say second or third choice in this spot.

You like Rexford? Third spot here.

This is a horse that hasn't been on the turf since May but was

running at LaSalle most recently in a 40 claimer.

What do you like about Rexford here?

Rexford is really interesting. I mentioned a horse named

Schwarzmayer. This horse lost to that horse

back in February and that horse is pretty decent.

Then they come off the layoff from that race into May 4th.

Got claimed that day and since the claim is actually run a

little bit better, I'm with you and on the dirt, which which is

surprising. Now, getting back to the

preferred surface, I think this horse merits a pretty good shot

at a big price considering there's a lot of speed in here

and, you know, closers might do well in this.

Race, yeah, son of tapature too, so we've got the distance on

that side. So the mile certainly not an

issue as well. But yeah, no.

Interesting, interesting closer here.

A a card with lots of opportunities, I'm sure for lots

of value. Well, thank you, Barry.

We'll catch up with you next week here on Socal Saturdays.

That'll do it for this edition of the show.

Or make sure you tune in next week for Barry's boring Play of

the Day. It's always one.

This week that was the nine horse and race 7.

If you are wondering about that this year, the 9 horse and race

7 is no, it can't be, never mind.

No, it's just a court is the 2. Oh, that's right.

That's right. It's a court.

That's right. OK.

Yeah, trust me. I know it's race 6.

I don't. Know the disappointment from

you. It's almost like you're a sad

father looking at yourself. You know what I mean?

Like you're looking at the mirror.

You're like you, You should be better.

Be better. Should.
