setting it up we'll talk with a. Man, who's on absolute fire down

there in Henderson. His name is Tyler Got by Leon.

He's back from injury. We talked about that injury.

We talked about the moment, we talked about all of the things

that go into a recovery, having a new baby.

All of the things that. Are going on in his life.

I think you'll really enjoy that interview and I'll close with my

friend Josh Rodriguez. We'll handicap the late pick

three on college day on Sunday down there at Ellis Park.

I think a fun part of that card and that sequence for sure.

You can catch me by the way. Here on Rabo and Co, 11:50 ESPN

680 and one O 5 seven on weekdays.

And it's interesting how the how the the year goes.

I was at the Haskell last weekend and I always have a

great time when I travel for that.

And there is it's always a reminder as well of the great

respect for Kentucky racing in other parts of the country.

So when I go there, you know, I see folks that either work with

organizations that I'm affiliated with and, and their,

their base is New York or their base might be Pennsylvania, you

know, might be Maryland. And I see them at these races.

Oh, Louis here. Oh, have you met Louis, Louis,

Louis, the guy from Louisville, Louis, Louis from Kentucky and,

and, and the, the expression changes, the respect level

changes, those sorts of things. And, and I remember there's a

cool stand, first floor of Monmouth Park where they sell

old programs and, and vintage items as a fundraiser for the

track. And the ladies that work there

are just spectacular. They're kind to me every year,

And there's always. The guy from Kentucky is here

and it's just. A reminder, you know, even on

the biggest days, I mean, the Haskell is one of those big, big

races, is it not? And even on those big, big days,

there's still a ton of respect for our circuit and what we're

doing around here and what we're doing around here.

And I didn't know this was going to turn into what it turned

into. But Churchill Downs has

announced that they're going to be moving the Oaks to prime

time. And look what, once they

installed the lights and started night racing.

And by the way, we'll get to it. I shouldn't jump ahead.

You knew that this was at least on the table.

And frankly, having the lights for the Kentucky Derby later in

the evening, having it for the Oaks later in the evening has

been a real benefit. So in that aspect, it's been

really good so far. But they're moving the race to

prime time. And I'm in favor of this.

And I wanted to share why. And then I wanted to talk a

little bit about some of the consternation and anger that I

saw on online and I saw on my text line on the show yesterday.

And I'm in favor of this. And it's it's pretty

straightforward for me. Years ago, Ron DeSantis in an

election cycle in Florida was elected governor.

And in the same election cycle, dog racing was outlawed in the

state of Florida. Folks, it's never been less

popular in American history on either side of the aisle to race

animals. It's never been less popular.

And we've got a state with a lot of spots with a lot of money

built on this industry. Horse racing really matters to

what we do around here, whether we think about it or not.

And I think we think about it when Churchill Downs moves a

post time, a couple of hours, it's very obvious that we know.

But in this case of how important the business is for us

and for the pub, the general public's feelings about racing.

I think the best place you can look is Monmouth Park, where the

crowd is incredibly young for the Haskell, easily over half

the people there younger than me.

And it is so, so refreshing to see.

They're very clearly OK with horse racing.

They love it, they love going, they love being at the track and

we need to harness some of that energy.

And one of the ways to do it is to put horse racing in front of

as many people as possible to get them to walk through the

doors of a track. I've argued for a long time if

you get someone to. Actually show up to the track.

They'll get hooked at a much, much higher rate.

I think we all agree with that. But one of the ways that you

could do that is put this on TV. Breeders' Cup used to be on

ESPN. Everybody watched it.

It's not there anymore, but I remember a couple of years ago

when NBC went to the Breeders Cup, it was in LA, is that at

Saint Anita and said, hey, we need to move your the Classic

up. We got a football game and man,

you would have thought they had announced the end of the

Breeders Cup. It's.

Over. We're never racing again.

How dare they ask us to run a race that's usually race 12 as

race 7. And I remember looking at it and

thinking, my gosh, what am I seeing that is completely wrong

because no one agrees with me. And here's what I thought

immediately. Awesome.

That puts horse racing right along, football right alongside

as a lead in to college football, the second most

watched sport in the United States.

Horse racing, college football, side by side.

That's what I want every single week.

That's what I want. Horse racing, Major League

Baseball, put them side by side. Horse racing, NBA, put them side

by side. I want all of it.

I think it's one of the very best things we can do in our

sport is to normalize what kind of sport we have.

It's a beautiful game and one of the things that we can do is get

it in front of an audience that finds it to just be another

entertainment option on the gambling side of things.

We need to build it in a way that it's another gambling

option for people. Make it part of the menu, put it

in those. You know, we talked about this

on AD WS and different things, the single wallets for sports

and horses, etcetera. There's a Really.

Really good way to do those things.

And then I see some of the local consternation about moving the

race later, and it's mostly on the side of local vendors.

And I think we're watching something with Churchill Downs

that we kind of didn't expect, which is our minor league town

with the bats and Blue City and other things is becoming Major

League on the horse racing side. The state legislature did that.

The inclusion of historical racing did that.

Kentucky's becoming the spot not just for breeding, not just for

sales, but for racing as well. You'll hear me ask Tyler and

Josh about $100,000 purses in Ellis Park.

Those aren't things that we thought that we would see, but

here we are. And Churchill didn't just

gradually grow into the major leagues.

It kind of shot up. When I moved here, the purses

for maidens were about 1/3 of what they are now.

That was only about 15 years ago.

There's been incredible movement forward on the horse racing side

of things or the major leagues. And I think this is part of the

growing pains. I saw a post from the the team

at Jack Fry's long standing restaurant in this town and they

talked about how the timing is really bad for them, but also

the all inclusive nature of Oaks and Derby now.

And this is where I think some of those growing pains are when

Churchill includes an all inclusive, they're restaurants

around here are going to lose some business.

They are, but catering is going to step up.

Other businesses are going to evolve and have to supply there

at the track with the food trucks and the different things

they do as well. It's a different crowd that's

going to benefit now. But I think it's part of the

growing up process. I think it's part of

Louisville's pro sport, horse racing, not just being like a

AAA version. Oh yeah, yeah, it's great.

It's it's nice we'll be at Saratoga.

Oh yeah, yeah, it's nice we'll be at Gulfstream.

Don't hear that anymore. You hear from trainers.

Oh, I don't have to travel anymore to make that kind of

money. Oh, I don't have to go to

Saratoga anymore. The 2 year old program at Ellis

is blank. It's awesome.

Those things have changed and we're watching that Major League

grow up in our state and I think this is part of it.

TV is part of it. How often do you think in your

mind, why is the national championship game on a Monday

and then the numbers huge? Oh gosh, why are they playing

the NBA Finals so late and then the numbers huge?

I think this is an opportunity for horse racing to re expand.

Let me say that again, this is an opportunity for horse racing

to re expand right now because places like Kentucky are putting

money back into the sport and that will allow people thinking

about breeding to go ahead and actually do it.

We talked about full crop, talk about different things, but in

the case of moving the Oaks a couple of hours later, I think

it was just the thing that boiled over the edge of a pot of

how people probably feel about Churchill because it was a very

different place decades ago than it is now.

I get it, I do, I get it, but if you want the very best of racing

in the world in your backyard, unfortunately with that comes a

corporate entity and that's what we have.

That's what we have here. But I would argue certainly

Churchill done much, much more good in recent years than bad

for horse racing. I'm blue your bow.

This is the Kentucky racing spotlight.

Up next is Tyler Gottfalion. He joins us here on the program.

His return? To Ellis Park after.

Kentucky Racing Spotlight. My name is Louis Rabo here in

the studios of ESPN 681057. You can hear me tend to noon

every weekday on Rabo and Co if you want to come hang out.

This is of course the Kentucky Racing Spotlight were presented

by the Kentucky HBA KYHBP a.com. Really excited to have him back

on the show. Second appearance here, first

time this year. His name is Tyler Gafelion.

He's a jockey and he just went 5 for seven weekend at Ellis Park.

You've had worst days at the office, worst weekends at the

office on that. Tyler, Good.

Good afternoon. Thanks so much for joining us.

How's it going? Thanks so much for having me on.

No, it's, it's very, very good to have you back.

I got to, I think, start here, new baby, Are you sleeping?

Like what are we doing? How's the whole how that going?

My wifes a St. she took on a lot of the responsibility actually.

He's been sleeping really well lately.

He's up to about 5 hour stretches so we're doing pretty

good. Isn't there, have you had the

moment yet where the kid sleeps more than say 3 hours or

something and you and you have the freak out moment where Oh my

gosh, is he doing OK actually? One night we forgot we we try

not to let it go past like 4 1/2 hours.

So we'll set like little alarms and there was one night we had

forgotten and, and he went to almost 6 and we both woke up.

We're like, Oh no. But he was great.

It's a learning. Process.

So I mean, Oh my goodness, I think it was George Carlin who

said, you know, parenthood is the last profession completely

left to amateurs. And as a, as a dad myself, I

can, I completely identify with that.

And I was thinking about all of that Tyler, of course, and Tyler

got finally on with us here on the Kentucky Racing Spotlight.

As far as you know, with athletes, I think we always

forget that there's a back story.

There's a life, there's, you know, in your case, there's a

wife, there's a new baby, all these things alongside a

recovery process from a, from an ankle injury itself.

You mentioned your wife. How important is that support

system for what you've you know your recovery process here?

I wouldn't be able to do what I do without her from the support.

I love just being there and I was, I wasn't able to do a lot

of things during my recovery just with my injury being my

ankle or my left leg. And so I was kind of on the

sidelines for most of it. So she really stepped up and she

carried the load and she's, she's amazing.

Let's do the injury part now and we'll get it out of the way and

we'll talk about stakes wins later on and looking forward to

the rest of the year with you. But you have the spill at

Gulfstream in the moment. Do you have a sense that it's

that this is bad, it's a break? Did you have that sense when it

happened? No, to be honest, I kind of just

felt like it was a Stinger. I had a horse flip on me and I

pushed off like I normally do and I just so happened to land

on the inside rail. And the way that I landed, the

horse fell on top of the rail and crushed my left leg and kind

of pinned it up against it. And at first I, you know, it's

like when you bang your knee in the gauge kind of feels like a

Stinger at first. So I hopped off and I was going

to walk over to the ambulance and I couldn't put any pressure

on it. So then I kind of had a good

idea that there's a little more serious, but until I got my boot

off, I really didn't know what it was.

You talk about the recovery process and how bad the moment

was then look, there's no there's no sugar coating this.

You know it March 26 when the injury happens that you just

described there at Gulfstream Park, Obviously the timing in

our sport ahead of the Triple Crown that season, the final

Derby preps and all those kinds of things.

Obviously not not not great timing, certainly for the

three-year old season. How much of you has to just

forget about that part and and focus on the rest of the year

and and how much disappointment was there given the time of

year? I was crushing, you know, it was

an exciting week. It was Florida Derby week and

then we were about to head to Keeneland and I was really

looking forward to killing. We had some really nice horses

lined up for the stakes up there and you know, it's that time of

year, all the excitement starts to set in.

Triple Crown and everything, but it was a big blow and it was a

tough pill to swallow at first. But like I said, having my

family around, supporting my wife really, really helped.

Did you find yourself rooting for your mouths as they went

through the Triple Crown season? Did you find that at least?

I did, you know, not only the horse was IA fan of the horses,

but the horsemen and all the time that they put in to get to

those kind of moments. Obviously you want to see them

succeed and I have good relationships with most of the

people that ride for, so I'm friends and.

I'm always happy when they do well.

I'm sure we'll see you in some later summer derbies, whether

it's at Ellis Park or Nashville or, you know, up in

Pennsylvania, what have you. Are you?

Are you at least allowing yourself to be excited about

what's ahead as far as the three-year old season?

Oh, most definitely. You know, that's a good thing

about our sport. There's so much to look forward

to. Obviously missed the Triple

Crown season, but the back half of the year is always exciting,

prepping for breeders, Cubs and there's just always tremendous

stakes throughout the schedule. A big help for you making up

some of the missed money from the last couple of months of

jockey Tyler Got Fell Yeoman with us is the fact that Ellis

has really done yeoman's work in in raising their purses and

different things. You're winning, you know, stakes

races at 150,000. We're running maidens down there

for 100 and allowances for over 100.

Tell us the truth. When you moved your tag to

Kentucky years ago, did you ever think Ellis would be the the

landing spot there in Henderson? No, to be honest, it was kind of

always an afterthought. But after watching the the

progress that they've made the past few years as far as 2 year

olds and horses have come out of there and done well, it seemed

like the logical place to kind of get back started after you

mentioned the purse increase, definitely more incentive, but

it's just a, it's a good spot. I have most of my business in

Kentucky, so it just kind of seemed like the right fit for us

right now. We didn't.

We didn't want to get ahead of ourselves, ride too many, and

with the racing schedule, it kind of opens it up to for us to

be able to travel back and forth between New York and Kentucky.

So it just opened up a little. There's more options for us at

the moment. The Sunday stakes schedule, do

you like that as a rider? Is that something that's been a

real positive like you mentioned, so you can get to

Saratoga on a Saturday? Yeah, actually my age and I were

discussing that and it's definitely beneficial for us.

That way we can kind of get the best of both worlds in that

aspect. Yeah, Jackie, Tyler, Geoff only

owned with us here the the, the three-year old crop this year.

I always love to ask horsemen and and Jackson and other people

about horses that aren't there. So when you see a sovereignty,

when you see a journalism with a Haskell like the the race that

he ran over the weekend, what goes through your mind?

How good do you think this 3 old crop is?

Because we have had a ton of fun on the media side covering it.

It's incredible. You know, not only do you have

the two big ones, sovereignty and journalism, but there's a

great group of drills that follow right behind them.

I think Osgars got a lot of potential in Burnham Square.

There's it's a really competitive group and it's

exciting to see what they're able to accomplish.

I think the Jim Danny this week is going to be exciting and as a

fan I'm looking forward to watching it.

You made a decision or just a week ago, week and a half ago,

to delay the start of your summer at Ellis Park.

Was that more physical or was that more mental for Tyler?

More physical. I think I just got a little

ahead of myself. I was being out for four months.

It's the longest break that I ever had, so I was excited to

get back. And as soon as I was cleared to

start walking, I started getting on horses again and it might

have just jumped the gun a little bit.

When you get back and you're riding in the mornings, what

part of you is like, man, I really need to be back in a

race, Sir, It's nice to be on performance, but I'm ready for a

race. That's the thing, I was so

excited to get back on horses and just being around the the

barn area and being around the people again.

But as soon as my second day of getting on horses and my next

thought is I can ride races. This is a cutthroat business.

You know, people lose mounts and and they're gone forever.

We've seen that all over the place.

Frankly. Was there any concern for you

that coming back you were going to have to re earn some of these

or or do you feel like you've you've done the work to to have

relationships with owners or trainers etcetera to to keep a

lot of those mounts? I think the relationships

definitely help, but I I still have to come back and I have to

produce. I still got to show that I'm

able to compete and especially at the level that we're wanting

to compete at and just I still got to prove myself.

Competing at that level includes winning five of your first 7

mounts at Ellis. Be honest with us, even you.

Did you expect that? To be honest, no, but my AGM

does a great job so always, I always have faith in him.

He said we were going to have a good weekend.

The timing with vanishing, how good is that horse and and the

timing in the stretch. Did you did you think you got

there at the time or was it one of those like bad?

I can't wait to see this photo. See, that wasn't really the

ideal trip that I was looking for.

I was waiting for a spot to open up inside, but the horse that

was inside of me was kind of drifting out and I didn't want

to get squeezed and put him in a in a spot that he didn't want to

be in. So I figured just get him out in

the clear and let him do his thing.

I had a ton of horse, but he definitely made me look good.

He's got a tremendous kick and Mr. Jacobson has done a great

job with him. How much better do you think he

can get? He's a very talented horse.

He's running against some of the top horses in the country this

year. He's run just about everywhere

and competed at a high level, so this guy's the limit for him if

he stays healthy. You were aboard Asternia in the

Twin Bridges last out there at Ellis Park as well, another

black type. This is for three-year olds and

up on the Phillies and Mare side, another sprinter.

How good is Asternia? Man open, you know, full length

here ahead of Mick's Palace, who's a fine, a fine Philly in

her own right. How good?

How good could Asternia be? You know, I've always liked this

Philly. I got to ride her last fall at

Churchill and a Sprint race, lounge race and she, she ran a

really good race that day. Just got run down late, but she

showed a new dimension the other day.

She was able to relax and she relaxed beautifully.

And soon as I asked her, she really turned on The Jets and

she opened up that lead and was able to hang on.

But if she can continue to move forward with that kind of

patience, I think she'll keep improving.

We'll be seeing Ellis Park host the Kentucky Downs preview

weekend next weekend there in Henderson.

Or I guess it's yeah, it's actually college weekend this

weekend, by the way, on Sunday. If you want to throw some

T-shirts at people there, you'll have the opportunity.

I thank you at Ellis Mark this weekend, Tyler.

But as we look forward to the Kentucky Downs thing, a place

where you've had a lot of success this preview weekend

itself, how much are you looking forward to to meeting these

horses In some cases, getting back on some, I'm sure in other

cases, just getting ready for that, that Kentucky Downs thing.

I'm so excited. Kentucky Downs is one of my

favorite places to ride and not only so money incredible, but

just the layout of the track. It's it's a fun place.

It's great for families. We've been going there for at

least the last six or seven years now and we always have a

great time. What is it about that place?

Is it the challenge of it? Is it that it's difficult to

know which horses are going to run well?

What's your favorite aspect of Kentucky now?

I think it's all of it, but for me personally, I just love the

layout of the track, the right and left hand turns up and down

hills. It's unique over here in the

States, so it's just kind of nice change of scenery.

Oh yeah, It's nice to get down there.

I remember talking with trainer Joe Sharp on the show at one

point and he said there's something about being out in the

country like that. Certain horses just like being

in wide open spaces essentially. They run really well when they

get out there. It's not just the track that

does it. Do you find yourself enjoying

just kind of the the quieter environs of a place like

Kentucky Down? Absolutely.

Like I said, it's it's just it has a different feel.

Obviously the money is incredible, but you don't really

feel that kind of pressure like you would have like a Saratoga

or anything. It's it's like backyard racing.

It reminds me of being back in Ocala, like working horses out

in the fields and it just has a very homey feel.

Yeah, I yeah, I love going down there and I can imagine for the

right horse or horseman, frankly, I'd be really, really

positive as well. Jockey Tyler got Falion with us

here on the Kentucky Racing Spotlight.

My name's Louis Rebeau. We're in the studios of ESPN 680

and one O 5 seven. I did want to ask about your

plans here this coming the coming weeks and months are is

your plan to largely stay in Kentucky right at Ellis Park and

then jump up say to Saratoga Del Mar whatever you got to do in in

spot sort of work? Yeah, that's kind of the plan

right now. I'll leave most of that to my

agent, but from what she's been telling me, we have a couple

trips planned to Saratoga, Del Mar.

I'll be riding Indiana a couple times.

So really just wherever we can fill the spots and kind of just

keep building towards Kentucky Downs and Churchill and

Keeneland in the fall do. You do you anticipate being

largely in Kentucky then once we hit Kentucky Downs, I mean, is

this is this style you're going to be Mr. Kentucky this year,

obviously with Churchill and in September then heading to

Keeneland? That's the plan right now.

Hopefully everything kind of goes well and we can keep

building on our business and put us in a spot where we're we're

able to compete. It's a fascinating time of year

for you to come back because we're getting geared up for both

in this state. You know, the rest of this, this

Ellis Park meet, which includes that preview show, it also

includes that preview weekend, I should say, excuse me.

And it also includes the Ellis Park Juvenile in those sorts of

races in the Derby itself. But around the country as well.

We're starting to work our way into talking about the Breeders

Cup and those sorts of things. When is it during the year,

Tyler, that you sit on a horse and think, OK, this might be one

that I'm going to be riding in early November?

It really just depends you, you kind of go through different

stages early in the year, I'd say April, some of them start to

come around and they give you that feeling.

And then I'll say it gets a little more serious around

August, September. Then you're starting to point to

certain races and find the right courses to fit in those races

that you think will go on and compete in those kind, the

Breeders Cup type races. I mentioned the five for seven

to start at Ellis just coming up on the 26th.

You have 6 mounts alone the next day, more mounts than that,

etcetera. You feeling ready buddy?

You ready to get back into it this full schedule?

You feeling? Ready.

Yeah, I'm ready. Yeah.

I didn't. We we took it pretty easy the

first week just to kind of get back in the flow of things.

But I feel great. I came out of it really well and

I'm ready for more. You got a bunch of maiden

specials that you'll be riding in as well, including a board a

horse named Quick to Charm. This is one that you'll be

riding the next time out there at Ellis Park.

This is one that's never run before by my no Excuse me as I

started twice before has run third.

Anything you could tell us about Quick to Charm this weekend?

This will be the first time I'm beyond them, but looking at the

forum show good speed last time definitely has the experience

advantage, so we'll use that to our advantage and see what we

can do. Mark Cassie went over 4000 wins

very recently there up north at Saratoga.

What's it like riding for for Mark?

What's he like as as far as a a back and forth sort of a partner

in this? Mark's amazing, yeah.

He's been so, so amazing throughout my career.

He put me on my first Grade 1 winner.

I won my first classic forum, I won my first Breeders' Cup

forum. So Mark and I have a very good

relationship and I'm so thankful for all the opportunities that

you've given me. But he's a great guy to ride

for. He's a great family man and just

brings a ton of fun to the track.

Never takes it too serious. And yeah, he's, it's a pleasure

to work with. Yeah, he's a good interview for

sure on our head as well. You also are named on six horses

for a guy named Joe Sharp who just won the title for training

here at Churchill in the spring. I, I don't want to say that it's

felt like in eventuality, because I don't ever want to

downplay an accomplishment like that.

For a guy like Joe Sharp, it's, it's a massive accomplishment.

That's a guy you ride for a lot. Frankly, you've helped him do a

lot of wins at Churchill. The two of you partnered

together very, very well. I like Joe from, from this seat

for sure. What's it like working with Joe

and and were you surprised that he won the right the track?

I'm not surprised at all this. This was a long time coming.

Joe Joe does a fabulous job. His team, he can compete

anywhere in the country and they show exactly who they are.

But I'm so happy for him. He deserves all the success he's

had. He's great to ride for and he

gets on a lot of the horses himself.

He's very familiar with the horses.

He can give you great insight after the race.

It's never, never a lashing, it's more of a discussion, see

how we can improve and he just, he's great to work with.

I love riding for Joe and I'm so happy for his success.

He deserves it. Well, Tyler, we appreciate you

jumping on I'll get you out of here on this.

The everyone I talked to in this sport that's that does something

like you do, whether it's riding, frankly, a guy like Joe

in in the training site, I always ask them, do you allow

yourself to dream? And I asked you this before and

you said absolutely, you know that that that Derby winner's

circle, whatever you you for sure you have to dream when the

injury happens. Does it, does it do anything to

dampen those dreams at all for you, Tyler?

To be honest, no. It kind of made me realize how

much more I wanted it. Just more eager to get back,

more appreciative of the opportunities that I've been

given, and just more hungry just to get back to that level and be

able to compete on the national stage.

Well, Congrats on the baby, Congrats on the health and

continued success this summer. Tyler, thanks so much for

joining us here on the SPOTLIGHT.

Now, thank you so much. It's my pleasure.

There you go, Tyler got fully on.

I appreciate him jumping on the program here on the spotlight

presented by the Kentucky HBPA. Again, it is College Weekend

down at Ellis Park this weekend. If you are there on Sunday, make

sure you get in with the awesome, awesome, awesome

promotions that they've got going down there at Ellis Park.

Everything from $1000 giveaways to Apple iPads and all kinds of

great technology. Anything from a barbers college,

Community College on up to a four year degree.

Whatever you working on, just bring your ID.

But you got to be there in person.

So make sure you go check them out this weekend.

Let's handicap some races. We'll do it next here on the

Spotlight Show on ESPN 681057. Welcome back to the Kentucky

Racing Spotlight on ESPN 680 and 105.7.

Now, here's Louis Rabeau. All right, welcome back in final

segment on a 25th of July 2025 version of this program.

We call it the Kentucky Racing Spotlight.

I'm Lou Irbeau in the studios of ESPN 680 and 105.7.

Thanks so much for spending part of your horse racing weekend

with us. Handicapping segment at the end.

We're going to talk late. Pick three at Ellis Park and I

have great news. If you are a full time student,

a part time student, whatever it might be as long, excuse me,

full time student at an accredited post high school

program. This includes 2 and four years

schools, vocational technical, Barber colleges, whatever you

might be doing, head on down to Ellis Park on Sunday.

It's dollar day down there. Dogs and drinks for sure, but

they're also giving away $1000 scholarships.

They're giving away Apple prize packs, Amazon gift cards, a

bunch of great giveaways for all the college students who can

make their way to Ellis Park on Sunday.

That is presented by hey, the same people who present this

show, the Kentucky H, BPA, KYHBP, a.com, all the great

articles and photos and videos from around the Commonwealth.

All the great people that make our great sport go here in

Kentucky. A guy who's not not in Kentucky,

but he's going to talk to Ellis Park racing for with us.

Not a terribly far Dr. frankly, a little bit closer probably to

get to Ellis than it is to Churchill for our guy Josh.

He joins us Josh Rodriguez from on the wrong lead podcast.

Really glad he could join us here on the program.

Little late pick 3 Ellis on a Sunday.

Why not Josh? How about it?

Yeah, You know, I love the Kentucky circuit.

I love going to Churchill Downs. I always have a good time there.

I love going to Keeneland, even though I lose a ton of money.

And we've actually been talking about trying to get down to

Ellis. I don't know if it's going to

happen this summer, but that's the that's the last one to kind

of cross off. You know, I've been to Kentucky

Downs and I haven't been to Turfway yet, but.

Yeah, I do always love them. It's its own animal, dude.

It's awesome. Yeah, but love the product.

Love, love seeing, you know, love betting these Kentucky

horses. And yeah, I think this is an

interesting pick 3. Yeah, and underrated day, by the

way, a Turfway, if you need to make your first appearance, is

that synthetic championship in December.

Fun day for like ridiculously good races.

On top of. Just full fields, you get 12

horses in every dark race and turfway, so that's a lot of fun

that way as well. As Josh just said, we're looking

at the pick three to close the card.

Races 8-9 and 10 on Sunday at Ellis Park.

That is college day again, presented by our friends at the

Kentucky HBPA, $100,000 on the line to maiden special weight in

race 87 furlongs on the dirt here.

This is for three and up Josh, so a little bit of less less

lesser knowns if you will, on the 2 year olds scene that we're

getting used to the elevated version of it at Ellis Park

here. I thought this was an

interesting one. I love a super long shot in this

one to at least hit the board. Where did you land though on

top, Josh? Yeah, so I, I kind of looked at

this race and, you know, obviously my eyes go to the

favorite, then the number 5 only Phil, 7:00 to 2:00 on the

morning line. And, you know, you, you kind of

have to decide what what your thoughts are on this horse,

right? And depending on what product

you use to handicap, you know, you might have a different, you

know, differing opinions. I will say on on the product I

generally use the most time for him.

He actually looks rather slow. So I I'm not going to have this

favorite on any of my tickets. My eyes kind of went to the one

ripped for for Steve Asmussen and Keith Asmussen here.

You know, last time out they tried turf with this horse in

and this is a horse previously trained by the by the late

Dewayne Lucas, but two back. I thought that effort was

actually really good. That was a day at Oak Lawn on

April 19th where it seemed like closers were doing really well

and this is a horse that was right up on the lead and just,

you know, the track was not going to let that horse win that

race. That horse kind of ran against

the bias. So I like this horse kind of

coming back to one turn, coming back and you know, going to be

able to be inside and looks to probably be your controlling

speed here in a race that didn't really seem like it had a ton of

speed. So the one ripped was my top

pick. I like the seven St. chance a

little bit too for Danner. The Danner barn there and you

know, has got one run underneath, underneath him in

the tripway park on a synthetic, ran fine, ran, ran a solid 2nd.

And I mean, you know, earlier in the year we just saw these

Turfway Park horses just firing when they went to Keeneland.

This is a horse that had a little bit of time off.

You look at the works though, the works look good.

This is the horse has been working consistently.

So I expect this horse to fire a good shot here coming off the

layoff. And then I mean Brad Cox, first

time starter showing up here at six to one, you know, by game

winner, that's the 9 safari game winner has not not been really

good with with first time starters.

So you know, this horse might be a little bit under the radar,

but you know, I have a hard time counting Brad Cox out in any

type of maiden race. So I got the one is my top pick

ripped and then I'm going to be using the seven St. chance and

the 9 safari as bees. I think only Phil Fitz here

really well the five that you mentioned to start because of

that bullet work last time and Wayne Catalano, second time is

very, very good with his runners.

He and Corey Lannery too. Once they get to Ellis Park they

win and so I will be leaning on that horse in my tickets.

I think I shot Irving Mocata gets the mount for Rusty Arnold.

Rusty Arnold a sneaky good trainer first time up for years.

What we said about him was oh just wait for him to run a

second time and you can bet him. But that number is creeped up

into the mid teens at 14% with first timers.

He's hitting at 20% right now on dirt.

This is what Rusty Arnold does And if you give me Irving

Mocata, who yes I get it, one win and 11 starts.

But three seconds? As well has been right there

giving horses honest rides I-15 to 1.

I think we'll get considerably longer than that too.

Joshua if I was looking at this race not from a multi race sort

of thing but rather trying to figure out you know say an exact

or trifecta play. I think he's a must use in this

spot A really interesting entrant this three-year old son

of keen ice in this one. Yeah I'm with you though on on

the one horse ripped. It's so hard to know because it

seems like with somebody of these these he's trainees from

coach once he got it in his head that this was what the horse did

they just ran that condition over and over right.

He would just say I know we're going to mile the 16th again.

It's like well coach no no that horse is going to mile the 16th.

He was just so by the way over a career like his not going to

argue with the man he had tons of success.

Well obviously it worked but you just see this over and over

again It is interesting to see Asmus from trying to move that

horse into what Steve does best which is the six and seven for a

long kind of races on the dirt. It's where he's really built his

legacy and frankly all of those wins throughout North America

and so interested to see that one in ripped in race 8 on

Sunday. We're talking through the late

pick 3 here on the Kentucky Racing Spotlight on Sunday at

Ellis Park. Race 9 is a mile and a 16th on

the turf and it's a starter optional claiming race $50,000

purse here. And we are going.

You can be in for 50 or 40 grand if you would like to in this

spot. Lots of options for long shots

if you like them here, Josh. I like one that's 30 to 1 to

fill out a ticket as well. Yeah, I, I like some horses that

are a bit of a price, but I, I don't have a 30 to 1.

You know, it is an interesting race, right?

You, you look at this race and you see a lot of horses that you

don't haven't necessarily run on the turf much, if at all.

And you know, it seems like the horses that have run on the turf

or have run on the turf look maybe a little bit slower than

than the dirt horses. But then you got a real, you got

to think, well, are they going to carry that form over to the

other surface and vice versa, right.

So, so I think this is a really, really interesting race.

I think the most consistent horse on the turf is the 2 tress

soles. You know, Rob actress trains

this one. Juan Machado, the axe man

aboard, he's hitting that 18% to start to meet off to a hot

start. First time gelding for for this

horse. And you know, you could look

back 3-4 back at those tries at Keeneland and Fairgrounds and

what were pretty salty allowance races.

I mean this, those figures I think fit with what anybody else

is running in here on the turf. And you know, you're getting 8

to 1 on the morning line on this horse.

You know, I, I don't know if, if, if that was a miss on the

morning line or if there's, you know, we are going to kind of

get that that price. You know, the 10 keen cat is, is

sitting there, you know, with, with really fast figures.

But you know, I, I don't know if at least going back, you know,

12 races hasn't been on the turf at all.

So I, yeah, you know, I, I really like this too, Trest

Souls and and the other horse I like is the outside horse, and

that's a risk manager Mike Maker taking a horse going long and

oh, Tyler Gafflion's board here. You know, when, when you look at

the rest of this, this jockey colony, and no, no disrespect to

the likes of like Luan Machado or anything like that.

I mean, Tyler Gafflion is the guy here.

He's off to A5 for seven start and you know, I I think Mike

Maker taking this horse going long, I mean has already been

doing it. But you know, if this is like a

this is like a turf Sprint, maybe you're a little bit, you

know, you know, because this horse hasn't isn't that much

faster than than some of these other horses.

But I just think the connections are way too strong here.

The 12 risk managers going to be on my tickets and then I'm used

to two Trest holes. Yeah, I got the 12 in my top 2

as well. I do think Brian's on the best

horse here on the 10. You talk about great jockeys

here, Brian back in town. He'll be riding at Saratoga on

Saturday. I think I remembering that

correctly. I can't remember, but it is

funny. It is amazing to see Josh

watching Flavian Pratt not be in the Dandy to go ride at Delmar.

Still wrapping my head around that one.

Makes sense when you see what he's got out of California.

But Hakeem Cat, I think comes in here has been running at a lower

level than this. And 20 Allowance company does

have to step up here into 40 Allowance company.

And I understand that. But speed figures, all the other

things seem to work out. This horse hasn't been worse

than second in his last five starts.

And the one before that was a 5th place finish by only a

length of 3/4 at this kind of level at Oakland Park.

But we are switching, you know, we're we're we get to stay.

Excuse me, we're switching to the turf here for keen cat, but

this horse does have two wins over the surface as well.

So I think this was more just hey, we can fit into the we can

fit into the condition here. So we're going to put the horse

in here. Another look at me picking kids

of keen ice of all things to do on this program.

But man, here's my long shot in this race is non fungible The

four hear me out. So Michelle Dalton trains one

win in 16 starts this year and it was this horse and it was at

Belterra Park in a maiden special that was washed off the

turf. OK, Louis, where are you going

with this? Well, this one started its

career and the other Listed turf race was at Kentucky Downs.

And Josh, you and I have been to Kentucky Downs many times and I

like going to Kentucky Downs, but it isn't a way to handicap a

flat race at Ellis. It just isn't.

You have to do different things. So I'm going to toss that 1.

So for me, this is really only the second time on the surface.

This is a horse that at Belle Terre at a mile and a 16th last

time in splits that I think we're going to see on Sunday at

23 and 46 and change that. This one set last time out under

Nick Juarez, who keeps them out here.

He's already got three wins and 15 rides with Four Thirds guys

hitting the board like crazy. I don't know if Non Fungible

wins this race, Josh, but I think I think he's got enough

speed and we've seen it the last three out.

Once this horse got to a mile, this horse ate it up right And

now we're over at Ellis Park. This one just ran in a 30

claimer obviously qualifies for this.

I think at 30 to 1:00. There's a lot of value with that

one. You can.

You can go ahead now and spend some time tearing apart that

pick. No, so what's interesting about

non fungible is I looked, I was looking through, you know, DRF

and I'm just like all right, horse did improve a bit, but it

still still needs to kind of take a huge step forward I

think. But then I look at time form and

you know that this is a horse that kind of got like nearly a

20 point jump on that last race at Ellis, even though it

finished third in that race. And that race actually puts them

within about 10 points of what I think you're gonna need to win

this race. And another step forward and not

not even as big of a step forward as as he took last time,

another step forward kind of puts him right in the in the

conversation. Now I'm I'm maybe a little bit

more concerned to see, you know what this pace scenario is going

to be like. You know, the 11 the 11's got a

ton of speed and you know, it depends on how how much that

horse and and maybe a horse like the one kind of press this for

but no, I I see it a little bit here.

Yeah, I think it's more just pace and it's more just I think

this horse can get the lead. And you and I have seen stranger

things in route turf races than someone getting the lead and a

bunch of horses not catching up. And so that might be, in my mind

at least a possibility in this one.

By the way, I'm hanging out with Josh Rodriguez from On the Wrong

Lead podcast. Lou Rebeau, this is the Kentucky

racing Spotlight. We are going through the late

pick three on Sunday at Ellis Park.

It is college day down there. The closer is on the turf once

again and it is a maiden special weight.

We're going 5 1/2. This is for three-year olds and

up $100,000 in the Kitty here. Josh, be honest, you can love

Kentucky as much as you want. Did you think we'd arrive this

quickly at a date with $100,000 Maiden Special?

Weights at Ellis. It's, it's wild, man.

Are they, they're just like, there's so much, there's so much

money in Kentucky right now for these maiden races, you know,

and you know, Ellis, Ellis and Kentucky Downs are just like

giving each other money at this point because because these

purses it, it's crazy. Yeah, no, that's fantastic.

Who did you land on in this this maiden to close the card?

I think there are a bunch of really interesting options in

here. There are, and this was a heck

of a race to end on. Because by the way, they carted

this perfectly. This is exactly what you want at

the end of the day. It's.

Fantastic, I mean, I looked at this race and I could probably I

I don't know if there's a horse in this race that would

absolutely just shock me if it won to the point where I I would

just be like I, I didn't see it. Maybe like maybe like the 11:00.

I could maybe be I I don't know. And even then I'm you know that

this is the horse that's first time gelding second time out,

you know, so I, I, I was just like, all right, let's let's try

and narrow this down a little bit.

My top pick in this race is actually the five Tap me a song

you gave size aboard here for I believe it's Carlos Santa Maria.

And last time out at Churchill Downs, this horse was on the

lead faded the third, you know, ran pretty well in that race and

actually got a really nice figure for that race.

And I I like this horse kind of coming back to a race that I

think it's got a little bit less speed than maybe that race had

at Churchill Downs. And yeah, I, I just think, you

know, obviously Churchill Downs to Ellis, you know, a lot of the

Churchill down to horses stick around.

But you know, we, we kind of know that, you know, the best,

the best horses at Churchill if if they are going to kind of

move up, you know, they're, they're kind of going abroad a

couple places over the summer. So maybe we think that this is a

little bit less salty of a field here and, and, and maybe he's

going to be able to kind of hang on here.

But I mean, you're getting 12:50 in the morning line and and

that's because. There are 12.

Horses in this field with two AES and it's a very, very flat

race. I think this is a race that you

can basically pick your price here.

So I I kind of landed on the five Tap Me a song as my top

pick, but there's two other horses I do like and there's

actually the two inside horses, Illinois Calvino for Mike Maker

and Tyler Gafflion. And of course, earlier I was

mentioning how Mike Maker is not great at turf sprints versus

going long, but I see Tyler getting the.

Board here, it's still 12%, I mean.

Yeah, I see. I see Tyler getting the board

here. This is another horse that's

shown some speed. And, you know, they did try to

get him on the turf last time out in the race that got washed

off at Churchill Downs. So, you know, I I like when I

see, you know, they're sticking to the plan.

They're trying to get this horse going short.

You know, you look, you know, before that, that Churchill race

is the horse that was working really, really well.

Had a nice little maintenance work after that Churchill race

and looks primed to take a step forward here, getting probably

on the right surface into Mischief can win on.

I mean, anything going any distance.

So, you know, breeding is not really an issue here.

And then the two Evan on earth, this is another horse I think is

going to be kind of tracking. The pace here has been primarily

or has only been on the dirt. But you know, just kind of

looking at this, this is a horse has got a lot of really, really

nice figures kind of stalking, you know, stalking the pace at

Churchill Downs. So I I don't really hate the

fact that they're kind of trying something different here with

this horse. I think the the pace figures

kind of, you know, makes sense and you know, Greg Foley's not

necessarily a guy who is really good with this like dirt to turf

move or anything like that, but Greg Foley is very, very good at

Maiden's Special. Weight race, no doubt about it.

That's. He's the 20% trainer and maiden

special weight races so. He's in a good spot at Churchill

and Ellis for being very good at main specials.

They're all great threes, essentially.

It's something so that works out for him.

It's interesting. I love the five as well.

It's so interesting you landed on him as well.

One that I found to be really similar to the one horse here is

Hoagie the player, who's the 10 horse here for Glen Wismer and

for Chris Landeros, who's going to get them out here.

They're they just gelded this one.

We last saw this horse in a race that was taken off the turf and

run on the dirt. Had the lead a little bit in

that one lost to Illinois. Calvino, who's also in this

race, and MO Work who ended up going on after this race.

But this one to me is a fascinating, fascinating entry

here. A quarter $1,000,000 purchase,

son of Omaha Beach, can he get this done?

Now? The works recently have been

very strange, but one of them was in the mud and I don't know

what to make of somebody. He's training tracks for their

six horses training and that kind of stuff.

But I think this one's second off the bench, second off ever,

I think has a real shot here. I would lean 5 over the 10 here

in the case of the Chris Landeros ride because I do think

Tap Me A Song is really set up for this one as well, but I

thought the one was. The same as you.

Illinois Callevino, this feels like a mic maker special.

Like you said, getting Tyler aboard never hurts in these

spots as well. So should be an interesting one

to close the card. You mentioned Evan on Earth.

What do you think of the chalk here coming out of another one

that's going to be switching services?

This is for Brett Calhoun who does switch really well at 19%.

Huge sample size. And second off the layoff here,

which he hits at 22%, we get Brian 15 one's nice price here,

Josh, And this is another one that you're talking about.

Would you say, hey, wouldn't be stunned if a a number of horses

won? This is certainly one.

Yeah, this is a horse that, like I said, on dirt has been running

basically the same, you know, similar figures to what a lot of

these other horses have. And you know, when when we talk

about 3 year olds, right, you know, we're talking about

teenagers here, right? And when they, you know, there's

just a huge, huge amount that they can improve very, very

rapidly. So second time as a three-year

old running here, you do expect to to see a move forward,

assuming that that he's going to take to the surface.

And you know, maybe you have some questions because you look

at his lone try on on turf going 5 1/2, you know, at Ellis last

year. But once again, that was as that

was, you know, being a 2 as a 2 year old.

So we're completely different horse at this point.

But yeah, you know, he was, he was a little bit interesting as

it's another horse that I like the fact that this horse got

passed early and then kind of fought on and was able to pass

and, and, and kind of get up for a second, right.

So it's got a little bit of fighting in, in him.

And, you know, I kind of like that because sometimes you get

these races and you're like, OK, none of these horses want to

pass other horses. And and this is at least a horse

that has shown some ability to pass other horses.

Yeah. And that was most recent time

out too, right? And so when you see the ran on

byline as opposed to no bid, it's a much better move for that

horse who seems to be in much, much better shape.

Well, Josh, I know you're a busy guy, so I appreciate you jumping

on short notice here. Do a little bit of handicapping.

Tell people where they can find the podcast please.

Yep. You can find us at On the Wrong

lead.com, on YouTube at On the Wrong Lead and on Twitter at

Wrong under score Lead. We generally stream Thursday

nights at 8:00 PM Central, 9:00 PM Eastern.

And then we got a couple of podcasts that go up handicapping

stuff like Del Mar, Saratoga and and Hong Kong when that run.

So yeah, just go ahead and find us at any of those places.

Literally nothing in Kentucky. Thanks, Josh.

I'm just kidding. Appreciate you very much, buddy.

It's it's Jim Dandy and and Bing Crosby weekend for Josh and so

go check out their podcast right after this Friday night.

Go hang out with Josh and the on the wrong lead guys.

Thanks Josh. Talk to you soon.

Thanks. And that was Josh Rodriguez and

he wraps up the show here on the Kentucky Racing Spotlight.

I'm Louie Rabo at Radio Louie. You can find the show at KY
