Barry, how are you? Doing good, nice Friday, ready
for Del Mar tomorrow. So yeah, some opportunities.
Everything for you to say to me. Nice Friday.
Get out of here. You know, man, what is this?
A little small talk with Barry Spears.
Welcome to the elevator, everyone.
There you go. But we do this every week.
We'd love to have you as a regular, a regular part of the
show. You're certainly welcome to
comment. And we'll get to those during
the show as well. But we walk through the entire
card on Saturdays at wherever they're racing in Southern
California. We were just at Los Alamitos and
of course down to Delmar most recently.
We will take you all the way through the Breeders Cup with
this show, including both of us being out there at Delmar this
year. Bury your first trip to a
Breeders' Cup in California. How about that?
Yeah, I'm very, very excited. You know, never been out there.
I hear Delmar is better than Saratoga.
I've been to Saratoga. Planning.
Oh boy, Oh boy. Why didn't you be in trouble?
What are we doing? Like come.
On man, let's just try this phone.
Oh bad. Saratoga compared to Del Mar,
That's that's what it is. It's bummy.
I got nothing else to compare it to I.
Never did. What do we do?
You love being Saratoga. What are we doing?
I I no, I I love Del Mar. I I can't wait to go.
I want to see where the you're. Going to have a great time.
Turf. How many breeders cups have you
been to? 0.
OK, this is a man we're many cherries will be pop folks.
And so we will get Barry Spears out there to the West Coast.
My. And it's my birthday is right
before that. Right before that, and not an
insignificant one, folks, so I'll be be on the lookout for
that. We'll have a seminar here in the
in Louisville before I take the trip out there.
We always do that in the South end with all of our horseplay
and friends in the South end here in the city of Louisville
and of course with our friends at amweageramweager.com.
All right, let's get into it, Barry.
It is Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks day, but we got to start with an
$8000 claimer because that's what God wants $8000 claimer
here. You could run for seven if you
want on the dirt. 6 furlogs here, Phillies and marriage 3
and up, $25,000 in the Kitty. I joke though, Barry, because
I'm never going to be mad if we can get 8-9 horses in a race.
So just just fill these gates for me.
I'll I'll do the rest of the work from there.
Just exactly who'd you land on race one?
Well, race one is is I I dubbed it the race that nobody wants to
win. Feels like you know, it it it
these these are, you know, lower level claimers that really
struggle to stay consistent. I ended up on the one who's kind
of a price putt for doe. This horse has some races to go
back to in condition claimers back in February, March and
April that were really good and and would stack up with these.
They dropped them in for this level back in June, ran a good
race that day. I think the race sets up for
him. There's, there's a little bit of
speed up front and this horse can kind of, I think being on
the rail actually is a is a good thing for this horse to get in
the race early and be able to pass horses late.
You and I both have the four and the six in our handicapping.
We have different horses on top, both longer shots.
I'm going to try the eight on the outside in Misty Dancer, not
a good run last time. Los Alamitos, I'm going to go
ahead and just draw a line through that one.
If you look at the weight allowance for this horse with
the bug boy in a Ron test here for Bill McClain, this is a
significant running at 1:11 here is really, really helpful for
this one in for the 8 tag 1-2 back in one of those restricted
Northern California races at the $5000 level and just a horse
Berry that I think is capable of winning here.
I think the outside post will be really helpful for this one as
well. It's I'm going to lean on Misty
Dancer in here in the opener. Roman Express Empress.
Excuse me, Express Roman Empress in here is the six horse and I
have to look. Did I have this one?
Yeah, second of my handicapping. How about that seven to two
Herrera gets them out for Jesus Araga in this spot comes out of
that 10K race, just a couple back at Del Mar and a decent
third was right there with the leaders of that race for most of
it before that at the 6250 level at LaSalle, gets claimed out of
that race, comes back, runs well enough in the 10 level that they
felt like keeping him at the 8:00.
So I went 8-6 and four here. What do you like about
discrepancy? I think this horse has a little
bit of upside, especially dropping in.
You know drop downs win a lot of these kind of races.
This horse is dropping down slightly and maybe slightly
enough to get in the picture here.
Has some races earlier in the year that that stack up pretty
good with these. Just needs a little form
reversal. Was that wide last time.
I think the post relief might get this horse in in the
picture. So race one, of course, the
start of the early pick five there at at Del Mar and get in
for $0.50 on that. It is the lower of the take out
of the two pick fives on the card, Barry Spears and Louis
Reuveaux with you. It is Del Mar Oaks Day out there
at Del Mar tomorrow. Race 2 though is up next for us,
an optional claimer, $50,000 price on the optional claimer
here. 5 furlongs on the turf course there.
By the way, Barry, the record for a 5 furlong Sprint at Del
Mar is 54 and 3. Goes pretty fast folks, and they
will be going almost as fast as Barry Spears, $81,000 in the
purse here. I'll go first, Barry, on this
race here, I landed on the five on top here in Sharp as Attack.
This is one that we saw earlier in his career in a Breeders' Cup
race back in 2022 when he was a 2 year old.
He's now a 5 year old horse here, son of Sharp Azteca.
We've seen these Aztecas running pretty well lately out there.
This is one that frankly dropped into the claiming ranks.
Couple back in the optional claiming ranks got claimed.
Ran back in a 32 last time under Hector Barrios and I think they
found what this horse's level is supposed to be. 6 furlongs
sprinting last time. Only has to go the five here.
I get it. The demuro numbers are not very
good, but all this horse has to do is just get out of the gate
well enough and is likely to be there at the 8 to 1 price I
adore. But this year the horse hitting
the board twice last two times out at this kind of level.
Barry, I think has been really, really positive class release
for the horse that you have second in your handicapping and
sharp as attack. But for the seven, I'm going to
call you out here, dude, because this is this is an embarrassing
thing for you to do to this show.
But we got to go inside the mind of Spears people.
Who do you have on top here? I'm very disappointed to you, by
the way, just very you. You went to the chalk zone
because of the names of the horse.
No, no, no. I'd I'd love to say it was just
the name, but this horse is pretty good man Bad Uncle Barry
and funny enough each time this horse is one I've sent the
winning photo to my nephews so they know when this horse runs
and wins and I I. Prepared to tell Mark I'll I'll
make this promise to you young Barry Spears.
Your birthday will be that week. This ridiculous show is already
paying for you to go. But here is here's what I will
offer. I will buy you if he wins
tomorrow the winner's circle photo of bad uncle Barry and on
top of that I will get Roberto risply to sign it for you.
That's. If, if that that's going to
happen. So yeah, I, I, you go get him up
on speed dial. You know what I'm saying?
Whatever you need right now. I can see the future.
By the way, I joke about this because, folks, I have him
seconded by hitting, gapping some stuff like I got.
Yeah, of course. Yeah, but bad Uncle Barry's ran
good at this level previously came off the bench from almost
almost a year layoff and won at 6 1/2 and they ran him on the
flat at Delmar July 18th. He ran pretty good, just missed.
And I think this race might be a little bit easier even though he
was favored that day. I I mean he really got unlucky
late and lost, but he he stacks up favorably.
I love your 5 sharp as as a tack has the back class to to win a
race like this and the only question is why did they lay him
off from June? I figured he might get a run in
in July but maybe something minor happened and he shows up
in a in a better spot than last time.
You know it was almost a certainty that he was going to
get claimed in that $32,000 claimer and he was.
Hector Palmer does good unleashing these types so that
shouldn't be the issue. I think the issue might be Price
might might get bet down a little bit, but I'm bad Uncle
Barry Sharp as a tack exact sounds about right.
You're 75 here. You also have the six.
I just appreciate the name of Vancouver.
I I'd like to think that there's a bunch of dating profiles of 55
year old women in the southwestern part of Canada
where they refer to themselves in Vancouver's.
I would really like to think that that's a thing, but I'm not
sure that that's true. Gotta be right?
I hope so. I mean, that seems like
something that should exist. Yes.
You went 7-5 and six. I went 5-7 and two here.
So I'll talk about our Bucky charm, 5 to 1 on the morning
line here. If speed figures matter, then
this horse is going to be right there for sure.
But Mike Pipey, the reason I included this one here, all of
the numbers just match up for what he does well, Turf sprints
he hits at 17%. By the way, underrated Mike
right now, 3 for 15 at Del Mar, right?
Not a huge number of starts, but he's hitting the 20%.
That's a very, very, very good figure.
Kazushi Kamura keeps them out with this one.
Who's run second back-to-back at this level at Santa Anita, Gets
down to Del Mar, gets to try the course here.
Decent enough, works the last couple out.
I think our Bucky Charms got a real shot here.
This son of Munning's six years old Barry, but only his 7th
lifetime start, so hopefully we'll see him for a couple more
years because all he does hit the board man.
All he does hit a year, once a year.
Let's go. Let's go get it done son.
We move on to race 3 here at Del Bar on Saturday.
This is So Cal Saturday on Horse Racing Happy Hour presented by
Amwager. Our friends over there
amwager.com. Go get that 100% sign up match
up to $150.00 right now for new customers live in California our
friends at Amwager. First maiden special weight race
of the day will be race 3. This starts a middle little pick
3 here as well, $100,000 on the line for 2 year olds and this is
on the boys side of things. Got a field of seven here going
5 1/2. Barry, where'd you land in Race
3? I landed on the 1 Falcon jet,
the other Baffert, now the two litmus tests.
The other. They paid a lot of money for
that horse Litmus Test and there really isn't any other pedigree
to go off of other than the dam. Dam was OK, but I mean you see
the works from this horse, so you got to expect this horse to
be fast, but I'm not sure this horse is going to be precocious
and seven to five seems a little ambitious, especially against a
baffert horse who's already run. So I I want to lean towards
Falcon jet. Hopefully Mike Smith will
unleash him from the rail and and just kind of scoot away from
these. So Falcon Jet on the inside
second timer, 27% angle there, of course for Bob Baffert, who
is exceptional with two year olds as well at 35%.
I think Litmus test is absolutely going to fire and
it's largely based on the works. And frankly, what's interesting
is Bafford's better in maiden specials with first timers that
he is with second timers. And so Litmus Test to me is on
top here, but you're going to go 1/5 in this spot as well.
Chapter one, another first timer.
You keep going back to the Mike McCarthy well, and I'm not
exactly sure why, especially in his main special race.
Because there's really not much in this race past the two Pat
Baffert's This horse is working OK, good enough Yelpan is is
still to be determined as far as his how precocious his horses
are. I I like to think they would
have a lot of speed and this one certainly looks like he does.
But I mean, we, we only know when they get on the racetrack,
but that workout on August 10th, the five furlongs, 59 and three
handling from the gate, 3 out of 85 is good enough for me,
especially close to the race. So that that's usually a
telltale sign a horse has a little bit of talent.
Mike McCarthy doesn't win much first time out.
So that's why we kind of have them underneath.
Send it MO is the second spot for me after the two litmus
test. I'll try the six.
Send it MO. Interesting to see Tyler in
town. Of course riding in that Grade 1
Delmar Oaks instead of riding at Ellis for the day where he had 6
minutes just on Sunday and made plenty of money.
But this seems to be an interesting trip for him.
Riding for Peter Miller in several races this weekend.
This is 1 going turf to dirt, which is a very good angle for
Peter Miller at 17% and frankly wins 1/5 of his races with
second time starters. And so this is one that I'll be
looking for to put up a big number as well.
So I landed 26 and one. We both have the one in our
handicapping here in Falcon Jet. Who you have on top, What you
talk about, the seven in here in the mix, 15 to 1 might be a good
one to hit in the early sequence.
Yeah, I, I give this horse a shot.
It's been working well and you know, and even since that last
race, I think this horse will get a lot out of it.
The winner, Proletariat is pretty decent I think, or is
going to be OK, but this horse didn't have a really great trip.
The workout suggests that this horse probably might want to go
a little bit longer, but I can see this horse picking up the
pieces. Didn't really get a chance to
run on the turf, probably didn't like it anyway.
Getting on the dirt makes a lot of sense, so there's some things
to like. Race 3, of course, a maiden
special. Race 4 will continue the maiden
special ranks. We moved to the turf, though,
and this is for Phillies. We're two years old for this
one. We're going a mile on the turf
course. There's $80,000 on the line
here, Barry, in this spot. It is an even numbered race.
I appear to be going first in even numbered races.
I want to say one that I really liked and it's a one that we
talked about very recently, frankly, at the beginning of the
month for Doug O'Neill. Is Hypergamy the 12 is going to
have to draw in somehow by the time we get to tomorrow, if that
horse does bury, I will have the 12 on top of my handicapping.
I will put that horse in. I think that enough of her from
that first race. I thought she broke well enough
that even from an outside post she'll be she'll be OK to go.
My guess is if she gets in, she won't run because of the outside
post. So I guess unfortunately, but I
would have the 12 on top here. Instead I will have the three on
top here in got the ring. Peter Miller, Tyler Gafilion,
the aforementioned ran really, really well last time at the
mile after stretching out from the five furlongs.
Makes sense. We go from 5:00 to a mile.
Go ahead and break the maiden the third time up in this case
under Mike Smith last time gets Tyler this time.
I think that's frankly at this point in his career and upgrade
from Mike Smith to Tyler, Geoff Leon and so I will use the three
on top here in a race 4. I know you have one that I have
second in my handicapping in the seven horse on top Padel Addict.
Yeah, Padel Addict was unveiled in May at Navon in Ireland,
finished in the top half of the field.
Right. Which was 4th but the three
horses that finished in front of this one came back to win wow
out of this race. So there's got to be a little
something to it you know in a in a race that there's a lot of
guessing going on. Phil d'amato does good with new
acquisitions from overseas. Yes he does this horse you know
was training you know steadily along should be ready to go.
I, I, I have no qualms, especially with that first race
with all the the winners could be live.
I think we'll give him a shot. I I think 7:00 to 2:00 is a pipe
dream though. I think this horse going to be
like 2. To one, yeah, probably not going
to get that kind of money. You also like the horse.
Just to the outside of that one in Improbable, you a first timer
for Jonathan Thomas, who's having a nice a nice year so
far. Yeah, I'm, I'm actually
intrigued because the dam won first time out, OK and again,
there's not really much to go on that I could hang my hat on.
This horse is working well into this race.
Jonathan Thomas does OK with first time turn up horses so
give him a shot 6 to 1. Probably get a square price on
him. He has one of the best debut at
more than a a mile or more stats of anyone that I know.
He wins at 12% and I know that's low as far as when we think of
horse racing in the high teens, it's not something that people
really are ever specialists at. It feels like at least.
But hitting at one out of eight, I think is a really, really good
kind of number for that. And so yes, he he'll break at
12% from there 12% with first timers as well.
That that one, that one you could definitely talk me into as
far as that I laid it on the four in the third spot here.
That's miss blame Juan Hernandez gets them out here.
A second timer for Doug O'Neill. I'm I'm playing on the 2 year
old angle here for him. Frankly, O'Neill kind of a 1516%
kind of trainers, 18% with two year olds.
And this is the second timer. So I think just the experience
of last time. By the way, shout out in the
form no menace. Oh, failed.
Shout out to our guy failed the menace.
And so yes, that's Miss Blame. Maybe Juan Hernandez getting
them out for the first time here can make a change for her.
And so in the fourth race I landed 374 and of course include
that 12 if they get in for me. You also have the 6th horse, Tis
Grace in your handicapping. Yeah, I'm going a little
pedigree angle here with the Ken Thoros out of a TIS now, Mayor
should appreciate the switch to the turf.
Again, not much to go off of Yak Teen doesn't do well second time
starters. But I, I would, I would like to
see that stat second time starters when they're making the
second start on the turf. It's probably a little higher.
I would gather not much, but probably a little bit.
So we'll give a shot to finish in the money here.
I love the old maiden claimer to maiden special when the horse is
coming out of a $150,000 maiden. It is incredible to see next to
Tim Yak team's name over 25 with this last 25 second time
starter. So that's a stunning number.
It just doesn't make any game sense at all.
But yes, closing out the early pick 5 is race 5.
How about that? They're at Delmar on Saturday.
Lou Rebeau, Barry Spears hanging out with you on Socal Saturdays.
Presented by amwageramwager.com 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt.
Here's the $25,000 claimer here for Phillies and Mares 3 and up
Barry in race 5. Odd numbered race means you get
to go. My odd fella.
We both have the eight in our handicapping.
You happen to have that one on top in a little boom, boom
another. Yeah, this is what they.
This is what they call Barry in college.
If people don't know, I just. Yeah, Little boom, boom, Yeah.
You're not far off. Funny enough, you know this.
This horse has to be related to Bad Uncle Barry and then that
would make everything. Comfortable.
Can I make a double of just those two horses?
Yes, right, exactly. Oh, we could do a.
Nice little. Parlay because both of these
horses should actually win little boom boom.
It kind of stands out speed figure wise, his last two races
are better than everybody else's last two races.
I think they're tied with one horse, but should be able to
control everything. Stalking from the Outside drew
excellent in this race. There's not much to beat and I
think this horse fits the bill, so we're putting that one in the
winner's circle for sure. I got lo boom boom, second of my
handicapping behind Empress of Grace at 5:00 to 1:00.
Antonio Frazee rides for Steve Knapp here, broke maiden last
time did did Empress of Grace in the state bride ranks.
But at the $50,000 level at Los Al going 6 1/2.
This is going to feel like a lot less distance.
I think just not having to take that little right turn around at
Los Al. And so I think she'll be in a
good spot. I think Antonio will keep her in
a spot where she's going to be really, really close to the pace
and then be able to go ahead and win this thing at the end.
What I like is how she's run the last two times out.
Barry, we're seeing a pattern now.
It's not like she ran those first two races and then broke
through. She's done it now, multiple
back-to-back kinds of races and I think she can be effective in
here as well. I do have Lil Boom boom, second
of my handicapping. Went to the one and Elton sings
another. By the way, great job naming
this horse. Damn is Elton in a dress and the
sire, of course, is all have another.
So Elton Sing's another is the name of this five year old
mayor. Good job out of them.
Terrible last time out. Terrible.
We're drawing the line through that one.
We're going to try to get back to some of the numbers that
we've seen before, but dropping into the claiming ranks itself I
think is the right move for this horse.
The last time it were anywhere near this kind of level was in
an optional claimer at this level where she ran second at
Santa Anita at 6 1/2. So I'm hopeful that this drop in
class will be good for her. In race 5, you have the two
horse in the third spot here in Misty Puppet or Misty Muppet.
Excuse me, that's even better. Yeah, kind of the best of the
rest. This horse is always competitive
and in races, but just doesn't win them, finishes in the money.
Cashes checks constantly is 4 out of five this year with no
wins, four or five in the money with no wins.
So that that kind of tells you all you need to know about Misty
Puppet. Probably will make an appearance
in second or third. Herrera keeps gets them out.
Excuse me for Jesus Oranga in this spot as well a reminder go
check them out Am Wager am wager.com great website
beautiful beautiful platform for horse players designed by horse
players. It's up to speed.
All the best, all the best options for you with our friends
at AM Wager and Am wager.com. Race 6 Del Mar Moving on on
Saturday we're going to the Turf Shoot where we will also be for
the Delmar Oaks in just a couple of races, going a mile on a 16th
in an optional claimer. This is for Phillies and Mares 3
and up, $81,000 on the line here.
Very even number race means Louis goes first.
I think this is very different race than you do, and I think
it's going to be very difficult to pick a winner in here, but I
landed on the outside on a horse.
Who's going to be second off the layoff in Rugelach?
A daughter of Twirling Candy here.
We last saw her at the end of July at Del Mar, have the lead
forever and then finished 7th and everyone might, oh, that's
no good. But it was by less than two legs
and so just caught at the end as part of a blanket finish there.
Barry, I think we're going to get a similar race here, but
this is a horse that won at the optional claiming level at
$40,000 last year at Del Mar and in August last year at the
$40,000 claiming level, got picked off for that number is
back in for 50 here. I think on the outside, Hector
Berrios can get this horse too. It's it the horse going to want
to go anyway. So I think the outside matters
less than it would for other horses.
So I landed on a rugelach, the 11 on the outside, and it is
time, folks, let's go ahead. We'll just stop everything for
berries. Boring play of the day, Barry
Hucher. Boring play of the day.
Like a clip you do music is that or trumpets?
Who's your boring play? Of the day.
It is number 4, the five to two favorite Gypsy woman.
This everything need to win wins at this level.
I mean, I'll be at $10,000, a little bit cheaper, but really
handled those those kind of horses last year, then got put
in a restricted stake and just did no running and they laid
this horse off. I think coming off the layoff is
is perfectly fine. Mark Glad does really well with
these types getting his go to rider Antonio Freisu.
So the intent looks like they're trying to win this race and I
think they will. OK, I agree that that horse
absolutely has a chance here. I have it second of my
handicapping. I want to see if this sounds.
Diddly Pooh diddly. Pooh diddly.
Pooh diddly. Jamora, what a goat.
Yeah. So I went 11-4 in this race.
You went 4-10 and six. I went 11410.
And so it's not as though we're terribly different here.
The white Lady. Do you feel good putting the
White Lady in your handicapping? Absolutely.
You know, she's kind of a a horse that.
I don't know why this one cracked me up, but the white
lady is just. What a great day for a horse.
I don't know why that one made me smile so big, but it really
did. I'm just.
It makes me so happy. Keep going.
I'm so. Sorry, 11 out of 12 in the
money. How can you argue with that,
especially at this level? I, I think this horse is going
to be right there, but just we'll fall short again.
Finished second 7 seconds out of those 12 lifetime starts.
So you know where the White Lady wants to be.
Second place. The the thing about finishing
second, it pays your own bills, but not other horses.
Bills owners don't mind having that kind of horse, but boy,
it'd be nice if you'd win once in a while as well.
I think the eight, she's a joker's interesting in here.
Again, another Gaffelion Miller combination, one that finished
7th in that that aforementioned optional claimer in July at Del
Mar. Before that, though, was second
in a closer 32 claimer. Optional claimer before that was
in a 32 claimer very close under Billy Ante Georgie.
And so if I get Tyler here, I think we're just going to get a
better ride for she's a joker and there's a chance at least
that should be part of the equation there.
But remember Rugelach kids remember and the white lady, the
white lady race 7 moving on with our handicapping here does start
the late pick 46 furlongs on the dirt here.
It's a state bred maiden special here for Cal sired or bred, of
course, 2 year olds, and so we've got an interesting field
here. Nine horses showed up for this
one Barry and and kind of a disparate group.
You get to go first of course here landing on the three and
need MO diamonds, which is just true for all of us by the.
Way yeah we do, we definitely do, but need MO diamonds.
The damn Florentine diamond out of smiling Tiger One at first
asking on the dirt. This horse also has 1/2 sibling
name Triple Diamonds and funny enough, this is the third fold I
think, but that horse wanted first asking on the turf.
So I'm sure this horse is probably going to lean turf, but
there's no saying that this horse can't win this race.
You see the workouts, namely that August 2nd workout, one
minute and four Handley from the gate.
Not too bad. I like the longer works, even if
they're not super fast. Going into these events where
horses just haven't run yet might have an edge.
Little bit of precocity, a little bit of speed.
Why not 8 to 1? Sounds like a good thing to me.
I think you're going to get way more than 8 to 1 because trainer
Paula Capestro is over 52 this year.
Sky can get one. No, what I'm saying is if you do
like that horse, I have great news.
The trainer is over 52, you're going to get 700 to one on that
horse. Congratulations.
I hope we get 7000 to 1. Why stop there?
We need MO diamonds. I landed on the four in Ocean
Bear. Why not another first timer
here, a first timer for George Papa Pedromo.
Roberto Rispley is going to get the mount here.
And I'm going on a Barry Spears angle with this one.
The gate works. The last two times I've been
really damned good and really fast.
And so if I'm going to get a first timer that works really
well from the gate and kind of got a leisurely stroll the other
day just to keep his legs underneath him, I'm going to
take it. And so I'm going to bet on Ocean
Bear, this son of Bolt Dioro and square Eddie on the damn side to
go ahead and break his maiden. First time out.
I went 4-8 and two. I think the eight in here can't
help myself. A third timer for John Sadler is
getting his legs underneath him. Son of Violence, I think he can
get it done here as well. Hector Berrios keeps them out
with second last time after being up the track the first
time. Natural Progression does say
that this horse will be even closer this race.
Here in Race 7 on Saturday at Del Mar, You and I very
different in our first two in handicapping.
You've got the six. Excuse me, Mr. Mike Hoyt in the
second. Yeah, this horse is the
proverbial why are you here horse.
I mean, you look at the pedigree doesn't scream anything that you
would ever see in Southern California typically.
Right. First time not at Wyoming, yes.
Right, First start in Wyoming, you know, you look at the
pedigree, there's one other sibling that that was pretty
quick ends up in a in a pretty sharp barn in a race.
That's for me. I think it's it's totally wide
open. And why not second time starter
in a race full of first time starters mostly.
And why not? I, I, I mean, I don't, I don't,
I don't know what kind of price you're going to get on this
horse unless, you know, some news on the on the backstretch
gets out that this horse can or can't run.
We'll see. But if this horse is lingering
around 6-7 to 1, I think it might be go time.
The works from the gate for that one also very, very good as
well. So there you go.
Little, little Mr. My Hoyt coming out of Wyoming for Barry
Spears tomorrow. Why not?
We're also looking you and me both at Mystic Moses.
What a great name that is. I think you play basketball
against Mystic Moses. Third time starter here for
Steve Miyati. What do you like about him?
Yeah, he hit me with his tablet before, or one of the tablets
while I was going to the hoop, you know, Moses trying to park
the Red Sea and he hit me. Whoa.
Am I back? Was it you?
Was it me? I think.
It was I, I don't know, but yeah, we're both back.
So that's that's good. Mystic, you were on this?
Yeah. I, I, I, I didn't.
It went kind of dark for a second.
High level professionalism. Keep going my.
Friend, you know this technology is.
A little bit great. Sometimes on a Friday.
Took a day off, huh? But yeah, Mystic Moses seems
pretty good. Got beat by Sammy Davis on July
19th. Who's a decent horse?
Was really there all the way. It wouldn't surprise me if this
horse wins. I just don't want chalk and
that's why I see this horse faded at 34 to one.
Finished second but ran a really good race.
So it doesn't surprise me this horse is favored in this spot.
But I'm still gonna look elsewhere, at least in the one
spot. Yeah, jockey Ruben Silvera, by
the way, 13 times hitting the board in 29 races at Del Mar
Silmar this meet. Given who he gets as mounts,
that's pretty damn good, frankly.
So Ruben Silvera aboard the two horse there, excuse me, the
three horse there, a 2 horse, what am I saying?
In Mystic of Moses, the Del Mar Oaks is race 8.
It is a grade one race for three-year old Phillies.
Obviously we're going a mile and an eighth on the turf course
there, which means of course, we will start in that turf shoot in
the middle of the course. Lush Lips has made the trip from
Kentucky and we've got a favorite an 8 to 5 in the local
runner in thought process. And Barry, you and I do our
handicapping separately. I have you share a sheet with me
as far as the handicapping so that I can say things like, but
you landed on the six on top and I can give out the names and I
don't sound like a total dope. And we don't waste time in you
telling people what you you know, what you're going to bet
on or anything else. It just is nice for transitions,
but for the first time in the history of this show, which we
have now been doing for seven months, you and I have the same
cold trifecta in a race and not some 6 horse field or 4 horse
field in a juvenile or something.
This is a big field. How many horses are in this
thing? 12, Yeah, 12, OK, We landed on
the same exact three horses. Does that terrify you as much as
it terrifies me? No, because we do well when we
when we click together, you know, we got a high strike rate
and you know, I just think lush lips is the goods here is a
little bit quicker than thought process and we'll show it.
I mean those only those look like the only two horses.
I mean getting beaten up by Nitrogen, who arguably is the
best horse in this division isn't anything to lightly.
Period. Right, exactly.
If she wins on dirt, man, she she's going to be a champion or
she's already a champion in in some rights.
But yeah, getting beat by that horse twice, once in Florida and
then once at Churchill. Nothing to to be embarrassed
about. Ran a really good race from off
the pace last time. I, I don't think that was
typically the plan, but handled it well and won.
So I, I think this horse's versatility will go a long way.
Not that thought process isn't, but hopefully I the way I think
it's going to happen is lush lips is going to get that that
lead early and and hold on to it with the 10 right there the
whole way in velocity, who I think should be the horse kind
of on the rise. You see this horse came off a
layoff from April 27th to July 20th, improved a little bit on
the speed figures. Had that one run in the
Senorita, the Great Three, which I think will will also help and
get that one up for 3rd and we can just call it quits at this.
Point, it's a very Mike McCarthy move when he's done with
velocity, is it not? Start with those sprints.
You know, you get a chance down the hill, you may as well take a
swing. Horse showed up.
Nice check from that one. You know what?
OK, we're at Del Mar. Let's stretch it out a little
bit see how that goes goes ahead and wins against winners for the
first time. No it it's a a very normal
reasonable progression from what what Mike Trader Mike McCarthy's
doing with her. It's a daughter of Nyquist man.
We've seen weirder things of Nyquist babies in these kinds of
races and so I I think she's got a legitimate shot here.
If someone told me they were going to try velocity on top, I
wouldn't fight them. Second off the layoff here.
This is one that makes sense to me.
Little added distance. Maybe it just likes it, I don't
know, but I I would not find anybody that wanted to try her
as a long shot play here. And it's not like she's in every
other type, man. I mean, frankly, she's back.
She's 4th, but by a length and a half down the hill.
So she's obviously fighting to the end and that one comes back
noses out against winners last time.
Frankly, if you add a half a furlong to what she did last
time, she probably wins by open lengths.
And so I do think there's a real case for velocity in here.
Thought process like you mentioned wins that San Clemente
Handicap last time out in the Grade 2 going a mile and that's
the question with her. She is five for 6:00, but you
got to add the distance here and I think that's why I ended up
landing on Lush lips more so because she has gone the mile on
a 16th. We've seen her win in optional
claiming company Gulfstream Park, but then she turns around
and like you said, half a length in the Florida Oaks to Nitrogen.
And that's the difference we're talking about because if she
wins that race, we're talking about Lush lips in a very
different way because then she would have topped Nitrogen heads
up, right? And so I'm with you.
I think Lush lips is the the class here.
How many would you include? Say this starts the late pick 3
here. This is the three dollar pick
three. How many horses would you
include here? Is it just your top 2 or would
you throw the three in? I would throw the three and I
think the three has a legitimate shot to upset this field if
things go haywire. Like for example, if a horse
like Kassalu gets involved and and you know, heats up the pace
up front, then we might see some fireworks and a horse like
Velocity would have a huge shot. You know, that being said,
Castle Lou could be the horse that everybody else is going to
time and kind of be behind. But whoever gets aggressive,
we'll see early how it's going to shake out.
Can I give one more horse that I think is going to be part of the
late equation and you'll get a price on his edge of Molly.
That is the sixth horse here, Antonio Freis, who keeps them
out for Jeff Mullins. And this one has only been
working on turf. And so often we see horses in
Southern California have to work on that synthetic course at
Santa Anita, and I'm not putting that down at all.
It's fine. But this one's been working on
turf. You see those dummy markers on
the outside of that Delmar turf. This is one that broke her
maiden last out at Delmar as well going a mile.
I think the added distance here for this daughter of San Somali,
the French pride is going to be really, really positive for this
horse. So I mean, cheap horse, but I
think she's going to be able to get the distance.
And Jeff Mullins, sneaky, sneaky stat wins a third of his races
coming off a win. That's absurd.
That's an absurd stat. And so that one edge of Molly, I
think is an interesting one that I think if you're playing an
exacto trifecta could absolutely upset the apple cart there.
Late double starts with race 9. This is So Cal Saturdays on the
hell we're facing happy hour hanging out with you and Amwager
at amwager.com. Make sure you get in.
They are live in California and they've got a 100% deposit match
up to $150.00 for you right now at amwager.com.
Race 10, like I said, start of the late double.
It's a $5 minimum on the late double out there here in
California Mile on the dirt course here.
We have come to love these races, $32,000 purse for these
12 five claimers. Berry race 9 means you get to go
first. We got a 7 to 2 on little
Richards bellow the two horse here.
Get her number. The four horse as well who I
landed on that would be Louise Boring play of the day.
You lay down the seven in here toward the outside in contrary,
Chieftain. Yeah, really consistent sort.
This horse won on June 7th at Santa Anita going a mile 16,000
ends up here for 12/5. Probably fits better.
I you know, you can forgive that last run they were hung out way
on the outside in the 10 post on the turf, not the preferred
surface and didn't and ran like it just was way too out wide and
and just never had a shot getting to this level with the
friends. I think this horse is solid, but
given the fact that a horse like get her numbers is really
plummeting and it's it's to me, it's a little bit suspicious
drop, but you never know. I mean, people do that sort of
thing at boutique meets like Delmar, but I'm still going to
side against it and go with Contrary Chieftain.
I'm essentially going with get her number because I think Tyler
will give this one its best chance.
This is a horse by the way, and you're not wrong.
On the 3rd of December in 2022 in the absolute slop.
In Jamaica, Queens, this horse almost won the Cigar Mile.
Just that's an incredible thing to think.
This one just I bet. That horse that day, by the way,
did not have mind control so. Freaking mind control that day.
So this horse, you're, you're right about it.
But I think Mind control won after that, to be honest with
you. Maybe one other race.
Oh God, that sounds right, but this is a horse.
I thought he looked good enough last time out at Del Mar that
it's a worthy of an include here at this much lower level.
His workout numbers are fine. They're fine.
It means he's still running. OK.
I'm not sure that he needs to run for much longer in his
career, but he is over his last 11.
The last two years hopefully be able to be a little better.
I do have that 7th, 2nd of my handicapping.
What would the eight here on the outside and Mother's prayer at
12 to one. Edgar Perez Pieris.
Excuse me? I love seeing him get mounts
down there at Del Mar this weekend.
This horse was in for eight last time at the mile and almost 1.
I don't think of 10/5 as being so much better than the $8000
level here. Barry gets keep Lasix here,
drops a couple pounds, frankly, because of the condition.
And look, I get it. It's our son of rousing sermon.
A5 year old gilded son of rousing sermon.
But I do think at the distance the horse is 6 for 19 lifetime.
This is what he's done for all of his career.
Does have a win this year. So give me 12 to one on the
outside with him. You went A-75 in this one.
Tell the people about Zimba Warrior.
Yeah, I, you know, just an old literal warrior.
This this horse is 8 years old, likes Delmore quite a bit.
You know, 6 out of 11 in the money, six wins at this distance
over time is dropping class just slightly enough to to cash a
check. I I really don't think this
horse will win, but at A at a decent price could get in the
picture and make somebody's exactor a try.
We close the card, they're at Del Mar with race 10 and I think
I had race 10 on for the race 9. That's my fault.
Made special rate breaking out of the chute there.
Mile and a 16th on the turf here.
This is for Phillies and mares 3 and up.
Running for $80,000 on the turf there.
Barry. It is an even numbered race so I
will go first here, but I will try 4 irrigate the four horse
here. Augustine Stables.
Kazushi Kamara, name that I haven't said yet today gets them
out here. Had him 2 back at Santa Anita.
Ran 4th last time. We're taking the blinkers off
here for this son of Erica, Jonathan Thomas trains.
I just think getting to the turf here, throwing the blinkers off
is a good enough angle for me looking around at the rest of
this field, Barry, I'm either trusting that Dan Blacker is
going to win his first race into Omar this summer, or, you know,
something else is going to happen in this race, maybe the
10 horse that I also have on here.
And by the way, I think culturally, this is the word
that gives away how you grew up, is how you pronounce AUNT i.e.
The way that you say that I think tells you so, so much
about how a person grew up. And the fact that I say Auntie
is such a giveaway to growing up white in Michigan that I can't
help Barry. That's the giveaway.
Because when I hear Auntie, Auntie, let me tell you about my
auntie. I know where you grew up and how
you grew up. Yeah, I'm definitely Auntie.
There it is. All right.
I do like Auntie on the outside, The Ted horse here, Roberto, get
them out. I'm drawing a hard line through
the last race and praying to God we get that race from June 7th
because if we do, I think the horse can absolutely win here.
Auntie on the outside, daughter of Uncle MO will clean up my
handicapping. 43 and 10 in the closer.
You have the seven on top here. We are completely different in
this one. That'll make up for us being the
same in the Oaks. Miss Artois.
I assume it's not a beer reference.
No, definitely not no still is here, but I I like the races.
This horse has had you know, clearly improved since 2024.
Ran in December 12th was fledgling on the the Tepita over
there turfway comes out West for Richie Baltus and kind of
blossomed. The horse jumped up in speed
figures when they hit the turf last time at Delmar on July 18th
was just way out wide. Never had a shot.
Gets in better post position this time.
I think this horse might upset the apple cart here at a good
number. Baltus and Afrazu six times
running together this year at Del Mar.
They have won one of those together inside post Starwood.
First time starter Demuro gets the ride for Mandela.
What do you like about Starwood here?
Mandela unveils horses like this quite a bit.
They're usually not cranked up all the way, but they run good
for an outfit in Ellen J Foxwoods, who, you know, does a
lot of spending at the sales and and really tries to pinpoint
good horses. And they usually get good turf
runners, so I wouldn't be surprised if Starwood comes out
running. Daughter of Quality Rd. their
final one in your handicapping is right next to her in the in
Toes. TOES City of Light.
Ask me when. I'm not sure where TOES comes
from, but here we are. Armando Ayuso, our guy keeps
them out here. Ford, Neil Drysdale essentially
second off the layoff here coming out of that mid-july race
at Del Mar. I'd like that part of the angle
for sure. Yeah, I I want to forgive that
last race this horse was on the rail, just didn't get a great
trip at all, you know, kind of all over the track.
And I think the experience probably did the this horse a
lot of good gets back in this race in the two slot.
So you kind of figure that this horse already had a similar
experience and I think can run better.
I I mean, there's really not much in here past those, you
know, the the ones we mentioned, the outside horses I tend to shy
away from because it's hard to win somehow from from way out
wide unless you get a a good trip and a good ride, which
Auntie or bougie beach could get.
But I think toes merits a shot to hit the board here at a nice
price too. 12:50 on the morning line.
Well, there you go. That is our weekly walk through
the Southern California card here on Socal Saturday.

No, no, no, no. We got La Cara La Cara 5:00 to
2:00 morning lines. She's a problem man.
She is when she gets loose, and I think she's gonna get loose
less. Chance you're not taking the the
Swedish Derby second runner and that one.
I'll try that, Sir. No, I.
Agree, although I I look long and hard at that horse and just
couldn't come up with that. One that's right long and hard.
That is So Cal Saturdays here on the.
