Very, very pleased to continue the horse racing conversation
with our friend Red Carruthers back on the program because
apparently she has no self esteem whatsoever.
Red, how are you this morning? What are you saying?
Quality content. Oh, you know, self esteem.
It's an honor. Hey, how are you?
Doing I've been great red. It's awesome to have you back.
She's at Tampa Bay Downs. You can find her at Red
Carruthers on the socials, Ren Carruthers and of course at
Tampa Bay Downs, FL on the socials for them.
Big day tomorrow. The Sam is tomorrow.
Are you joining Jason Beam and me as part of the army of
calling it the Sam? You know what, I always talk to
Davis, so I'm going to be contrarian.
I think I'm the contrarian here. I think people are going to
follow the Ren Carruthers. I don't like that at all.
All right, well, she's Ren Carruthers.
A quartet of steaks down at your place.
And it's turned into an interesting weekend, Ren, with
the four Derby preps now being pushed, You know, two of them
today, two of them tomorrow, you know, And frankly, I was very
happy to see. And I know, you know, you and I
went back and forth last month with with a cancellation, but
boy, the Davis filled up really nicely.
Nine horses. They had to be really happy down
there, huh? Yeah, of course.
I mean, I, I do think it probably runs through the
favors. It's, you know, it's still, it's
still a great field, you know, in terms of there's different
opportunities, I think in how you want to play it in the
exotics and not that, not that the favorite is unbeatable.
I I do think he looks very tough though.
There you go. All right, let's go.
Earlier on the card, though, a pair of stakes races in the
early pick 5. The Minaret is race 4.
This is the Philly and Mare Sprint on the card. 6 furlongs
on the dirt A. 100 and. 25 on the line here and Mystic Lake is
back. We've seen her at Tampa before.
2 for two on the track there, of course for Safi, Joseph Flavian
Pratt rides her for the first time.
And then of course, Miss Bucaro, who upset her last time at
Gulfstream Park in the sugar swirl.
Horse racing is the best names, doesn't it?
I mean, the dinner party, the sugar swirl, the the very one
all the great things. What who'd you land on in the
the Old Minaret? Well, you know, originally I
thought, well, Mystic Lake, she had an excuse.
She was coming in off a layoff. She, she got out there and, you
know, getting pace pressure and the horse who were inside, you
know, it looked like they made a little bit of contact as they
were heading to the top of the turn for home.
And the more I looked at was like, well, the horse she made
contact with had to check back. And that was Miss Buchero.
And Miss Buchero I've thought really had to overcome more
after she had her stride up set to then come back and and run
Mystic Lake down. I mean she cut the corner up the
inside when she got back into gear.
And again, Mystic Lake does have that excuse of it being her
first race back however, and Mystic Lake is 2 for two at
Tampa. So it sounds like I'm making
this argument for her. It does.
That being said, I I was just really impressed with Mr. Caro's
tenacity there to again, a lot of horses, once they have the
rhythm upset, it's hard for them to get back into gear.
They they get a little discouraged.
I like that she showed that grit and tenacity to come back on.
We have I rad back in to ride her.
Mystic Lake has the rail, so she should be able to get out there
on the lead. But I do like that the Miss
Buquero's who are outside and can press on the outside this
time and hopefully we don't see a little bit of a kerfuffle
again. So I went with Miss Buquero over
Mystic Lake this time because obviously Mystic Lake is going
to take a ton of action. I think most of them are going
to feel that she had that excuse of the layoff and it it she very
well could turn the tables and get her revenge.
But that's the way I see it. And then, I mean, if you're
going to play a trifecta, summer's coming from Mike
Deeney. I mean, she's run second in both
stars. She's had here this meet.
They were both at the optional 100 level and she finishes the
length and a quarter off a horse named Factor Bella in the First
off the bench. And that puts her right in the
mix with these horses. I mean, Factor Bella beat Miss
Bucchero in the Regret Stakes by three and a quarter lengths, and
she also got beat by Mystic Lake in the Liberty Bell.
So these horses fit. And Mike Deeney, you got to love
him. A Tampa regular.
What about the Lynn Rayrich train, 4 for four at Tampa?
Long gone, Sally? Is she a candidate for the
trifecta? I, you know, my thing was long
gone, Sally and she surprised me every time.
I just, this is a big step up. I mean, but then again, I
questioned her before. I mean, she won that 8:00 and
12:00. So for those who don't know what
an N2L means, it means 9 winners of two lifetime.
You're in for the claim. If you want to buy that horse
out of the race, she's in there for $8000, OK, And so she won
that race. I was like, OK, and then she
stepped right up the next class ladder ladder, taking the N3L9
winners a three lifetime. And she did that by 8 1/2
lengths. Very impressive, of course.
So then they throw her into optional competition where now
she is protected, she doesn't have to be in For sale and she
wins two more races at those optional levels.
So she's answered the call at every marker.
I just think this is a whole different animal here today.
Yeah, fair enough for. Tomorrow.
Yeah, no, you're good. I think the six for lungs will
fit her. If she is going to pull an upset
on this card, it will be at the six for long distance.
So interesting to see her tomorrow talking with Ren
Crothers down there at Tampa Bay Downs.
Hopefully your flight go okay yesterday.
I I can't imagine just the chaos of these airports lately.
It's just so bad you. Know I we flew Allegiant for the
first time because Bluegrass airport they have a direct
flight, but it only is on Thursdays down at Saint Pete's
and, and which is, you know, right down the road from from
Tampa. And they only, they only fly on
Thursdays, 2T it's two there and they only fly back on Sundays.
It was a great experience. Awesome.
Every every person with whom we dealt the whole way through from
the counter to check in to the flight crew to everybody.
They were fantastic. I really enjoyed.
It I love hearing at the Suncoast just race 5 closes the
early pick, 5 starts a middle pick four there, mile 40 on the
dirt track there. The Suncoast is a 20 point prep
for the Kentucky Oaks. We're not going to talk about
this week why the Florida Oaks is on the turf and not on the
dirt. We'll get to that at a different
time. But there's $125,000 on the line
here and we see Brad Cox bringing 1 up from from
Churchill Downs, 4th place finisher in the Golden Rod
throwing the blinkers on Life of Joy.
Is she the favorite here? No, I don't think so.
I, you know, I, I mean, she's the biggest competition to the
horse who I think will be the favorite and is the horse I
think going to win is zany. But I will say this.
So the Suncoast is a really exciting race for those who
don't know. I mean, we've seen some like
heavy hitters come through the Suncoast Lacara last year we had
power squeeze in 2024, the home team Bennett took it.
You know, Gerald Bennett took it with Dreaming of Snow in 2023
with Camacho board. And of course in 2022, Todd
Fletcher won the race with Nest and we know how goodness, I
mean, champion over 2.1 million in earnings and also Cohen by
Mike Ropoli, right? So zany same connections with
Pletcher Ropoli. She's one of two entered 4 Todd.
And I just think Zany is one of those horses where I got to give
a shout out also to John Green and Len Green.
They bred this horse DJ Sable, and they always have a mind to
bringing in that beautiful balance of stamina and
brilliance. And you have this with this
Philly. I mean, when you look at it, she
want her debut at Gallstream going 6 1/2 furlongs, took that
by 6 1/2 lengths. And when you look at the
pedigree, you're like, Oh my gosh, you would think she'd be a
little bit slow. She's no.
And then she's able to stretch that out there in the
demoiselles by 8 1/2 legs. Now, were these really tough
fields? No, but I'm not going to falter
for that because she basically was doing this on the front end
or just off before kicking on. So for me, it's it's telling me
that she herself is able to put forth these types of efforts.
And it's not really about the competition.
So yeah, I, I really like her a lot.
And you're right, the biggest competition again, is the Brad
Coxley. That is life of Joy Post 5
already Zany has 10 points to the Oaks already.
She has 12. And she, I mean, when she won
that debut by 14 minutes, record length at Horseshoe, of course,
you know, people took notice. And then she, you know, got
right on the road to the Oaks, scored the rags to riches there
at Churchill going the eight and half furlongs.
And you had the grumpy rabbit in second.
That's a good. That's a good.
Yeah. She had run third behind Percy's
Bar and Tommy Joe in the Alcibiades and then you know you
had Life of joy in the goldenrod there and she was favorite.
She had to come from double digit links.
If you had a horse up front that was let me count the way she was
just clipping along out there. She was 5 in front of the field
and you had Bello Ballerina who is the half sister.
I think it's half. I have to double check to pretty
Mischievous who won the Oaks for Brendan Walsh and she she was
sitting right back waiting to get first run at let me count
the weights when she finally backed up.
You had a tropa in there who rallied for 2nd and a tropa.
She went on to get beat just a half length in the silver bullet
day put up a 79 buyer figure for those who follow the figures and
you got life of joy coming in fresh.
So she has been in because better fields, OK, She's been in
a better company for sure. So when you look at her figures
are like, oh, her figures aren't quite as impressive as what Zany
did left out. Well, yeah, I mean, Zany's also
beating up on horses that weren't that great.
But like I said before, the fact that she's able to be forwardly
placed and putting forth those efforts and putting forth those
figures, that's why I don't care quite as much, right.
She is losing Irad to Zany, but she does get Pratt, so you know,
you don't have to hate that either.
So yeah, if you're looking, but those are your top two.
I will say that for those who want to maybe look to add some
big price underneath, I don't think the other pleasure Philly
should be ignored. Cadabra and I, I know I'm
talking a lot. Sorry to all your listeners.
No, What are you talking? This is why you have.
This is talk radio. You're supposed to talk.
No, you're good, right? This is great.
Keep going. I.
Don't know how many minutes you booked me for so I could keep.
700, keep going. All right, So I think she should
improve here, getting two turns on this track.
OK, our track got, you know, here's the thing I found our
track does. It's very kind of turfy type and
it's also very kind. And this is part of the reason
why I can't wait for a horse to start running at Belmont again,
because one of the Knights Eagles I've always loved, it's
horses who do well at Belmont over Big Sandy.
They do well at Tampa. I'm just saying.
I'm just saying. But anyway, this silly, she's
got some turpiness to her pedigree a bit, OK.
And especially. Yeah, Yeah.
And she and the pedigree also reads to me as two turns, OK.
She has shown speed in all three stars she's had.
They've all been sprints. She ran second to really good
Chilly and Lenny Lou in the slop on debut.
For those who don't know Lenny Lou, I mean, this is a really
good steak Chilly. She went on to win the Royal
Palm Juvenile. She ran third in the Queen Mary
at Royal Ascot. She won the Desert Victims.
She beat the boys in the Hollywood Beach.
Then she got beat just five lengths in the Juvenile Turf
Sprint. OK, Cadaver herself, she went on
to win a 5 furlong mean special weight at Belmont at the Big A.
That's not the same as Belmont, y'all, So I can't use my Big
Sandy connection there. However, you know she she won
that. Then she was a speed and a fade
off the layoff at Gulfstream going 6 1/2 furlongs.
The winner there. That's a nice horse.
Holland Dr. She finished fourth in the grade 3-4 gal out of
there. And then I know it was just a 35
claimer, but the 6th place runner, that was MO Hygiene.
She won a 35 claimer by three and three quarter lengths.
She put up a 72 fire figure out of that race.
So not bad from that perspective.
But the main thing with this silly is that I think she can be
better here. Second off the bench.
She's getting to stretch out on this surface.
Her mom could route on turf and synthetic.
And the family includes another notable horse in champion
Sovereign champion Cairo Consort.
So there's that turfiness that you see again in the genetics,
but there's certainly dirt in there as well.
Because this family also includes another horse that Todd
Pleasure actually trained in Awesome Maria, who was really
awesome. So I was just would not discount
her as being part of your exotics.
And she's sitting at there, you know, and I think she'll I think
unless people just see the name Pleasure and lay down money, I
think you'll still get like double digit odds on her.
So just saying. Just saying is Red Carruthers.
She's down there at Tampa Bay Downs.
Closer on the card is the Sam. She calls it the Davis.
She's wrong. It's a quarter million bucks.
It's a mile and a 16th. Ah, the dirt.
This is the Derby prep of the weekend down there at Tampa Bay.
A lot of great horses have won the Sam.
This is actually a very, very good predictor for future
success. Not necessarily Derby success,
but boy, a bunch of great horses have come out of here and we get
a bunch of horses in here that have are coming out of very good
performances in their previous races.
The favorite almost certainly will be Renegade.
That's Pletcher and Irad breaking from the 6th.
Confessional will draw the rail. What do you make of the rail
draw for a horse that has to go two turns for the first time?
Well, I mean it, it just depends.
I mean, if they have and it looks to me like he has, you
know, enough early speed to get out there and the rail itself
not be a big hitters. I will say really quickly before
I just truly tell, you know, make it look like you're to your
viewers as though I'm, you know, I love shock the Pelican, which
is race 10 real quick. Track me, I think could upset.
I think track mate could upset. There's a bit of speed.
I could see concrete glory and Silver Slugger, who, by the way,
I love silver. That horse is gutty as all get
out 1/8 of nine at Tampa Bay down.
Victor Martinez owns them. I mean, there's one Avila
strikes at like 30 something percent at Tampa.
That horse has a big shot to to win it for the home base.
But as far as like getting some good value, you know, and he's
41 in the morning line track made, I think 7:00 to 2:00 on
the morning line track made. I think the horse that could
take advantage if there's a pastel up front, some hook and
cooking, so to speak. But yeah, as far as the as far
as the the Davis. Race you're talking about now,
the Davis. Never heard of it.
Yeah, right. Yeah, I mean, why, why would we
just get a little more personal with this of the salmon, you
know, I mean, like I. Didn't call the F Keep going,
keep going. Yeah, truncate it down to the F
But let's talk about the SFB. I mean, I don't know, but yeah,
I got to. I got to recompose myself.
OK, Yeah. The thing, you know, I watched
Confessional because I kind of wanted to like him, you know, a
lot of essential quality, You know, you could maybe even throw
my essential quality did a lot of good running at Belmont, just
FYI. So you could maybe like use my
angle there a little bit with that.
But do I watch it? It is weird.
It's kind of like when you watch people, right?
And you can tell like if if another person has like a ton of
charisma or like when they walk in the room, you know?
Yeah. The Riz.
Yeah, exactly. He just looks like when I was
watching him run. ABS.
Absolutely. Of course.
Talented and he did have the blinkers on last out and I think
this was part of it. It got him a little like I the
way in which he was carrying himself was it looked a little
bit mechanical, whereas by comparison, and This is why
watching renegade. If if your viewers haven't had a
chance to watch any of his races, I highly recommend they
do so to kind of get an idea of why there's the hype.
This horse runs like not only like he understands his job, but
like he relishes his job. He like he wants to flip and rip
your heart out like it's it's it's it's really, really
impressive the way this horse gets out there.
The word that comes to mind is determinedly he does not want to
lose. And to the point where he's kind
of had to push himself out of trouble.
Like, you know, when he was running last out in New York, he
got out of the gate about 1/2 beat slow.
And then he because of that, he came out and he got into this
crunch with these other horses and he pushed his way through
that. And he still hadn't kind of
extricated himself from from having a stride a little bit
upset because there was another horse alongside him and in close
company as they were going into that first turn.
So the fact that he ran the race, he did, even though he
ended up finishing second to Paladin, who he had finished in
front of the race prior but was disqualified.
I I just thought it was such an impressive effort.
And this is a horse with a tremendous pedigree.
I mean, he's by into mischief. He's out of Grade 3 winner
Spices Nice by Hall of Famer Kerlin.
She herself is out of Grade 1 winner Dame Dorothy by
Bernardini. You know, spice is nice.
Dame Dorothy also trained by Todd, by the way, and you have a
Whitney winner there in the pedigree also with unaccounted
for. So I, I just, I just think this
horse looks like he's got the goods and he's freshened back up
And I it would be really cool because you know, Ripoli owns
this horse alongside with his breeders, Robin Lalana Lowe.
And to have bred a horse of this caliber, it's got to be that
feeling has to be one of those. I'm going to use the cliche
words, surreal. I mean this horse, I think is is
very talented. No, I I totally agree with you.
I would make the joke. Is this Ripoli's horse that will
scratch out of the Derby? I'm not going to do that, Ren.
That's not a nice thing to do. So I'm not going to do that on
this show today. That's not what we're doing
today at all. The the I can't believe there's
a buzz horse in the sand, but there is His name is the Puma
around here. We had a quarterback named Puma
pass. So this makes us very What do
you make of the Puma? He's got speed, but he's going
to have to, if he's going to want to use it.
He's going to, yeah, he's going to have Doctor Kapoor.
He's going to have Doctor Kapoor to, to tango with.
And so, you know, I, I just, I don't know, it's very rare when
you see horses, like I said with Renegade that just they, they
want to run you down. So I don't know, like, you know,
I just, I just have a feeling that it all just going to run
through him now. I, I don't fault anybody if they
want to look for better price opportunities, because how many
times do we see it where you think a horse is a lock and
they're absolutely not for whatever reason.
It's just, you know, a lot going back to talking about when
horses get into trouble or they're stride upset or this
happens or that happens, you have to a lot of them get
discouraged. They don't want to go on with it
or they, you know, they, they get mentally thrown out of the
game. So it's really rare when you see
a horse who's not only talented in terms of just the mechanics,
the physicality, but the mentality on top of it where
he's been through. Like, I mean, this horse, I feel
you could put him on a battlefield and he's going to,
he's going to, he's going to run his game, you know?
Do you know that's why they do You know why?
That's why they settled the West with donkeys instead of horses,
because donkeys would sense danger.
And horses are like, yeah, I'll go there.
I'm not kidding. That's why they did it, because
horses are like, yeah, sure, I'll go, yeah, OK.
Yeah, yeah, right. I mean, like, you know, we got
the Sergeant reckless thing going on, you know.
Oh, I mean, I don't know, like I said, I I don't, I don't like
picking Jock. I don't sure, but there's.
No, but if he's the best horse in the race, there's no reason
to miss the pick 5 because you decided to get cute about it.
I mean, right, I mean. Also, how do I not pick a horse?
Renegade. Ren Ren renegade.
I mean, come on, come. On people all right well we got
