Full Transcript
All right. Welcome to a early October
Edition. A fall is in the air addition.
Pumpkin spice, latte edition of the horse-racing hosp.
Our horse racing happy hour after hour.
What kind of music we got going on here.
This one that podcast Spooks. Is that what that's from sound
podcast, man? Busy show.
Dude I guess Zealand getting open.
Everybody's got their Green Jackets, ready?
I'm going, they're gonna look at Stones.
It's going to be great, stare off into Service Roads behind
them. Exhale gonna be awesome.
Yeah, yeah. Gady on the hill.
Actually tomorrow, is that first day races at or Saturday?
I should say day race is at Keeneland.
You can't game at night which is some of the finest available
game. By the way, South Carolina?
Yeah, I'll be there for Mississippi state, two weeks.
Oh, I told you. That's we're actually.
I'm telling you dad's birthday. That's turning 70.
Whoo, yeah, that's right. By the way, shout out speaker,
Return of the Mack back with our friends.
Brown-forman Cooper's craft hanging out with us, the rest of
this season tonight. We've got the 82 proof will be
switching back and forth, 82 and 100 Proof.
They're moving more towards 100 proof.
As their go-to, I cannot stress. This enough, if you are
traveling Cooper's craft, many bottles is the baller.
It is the airplane bottle of choice.
Um, will be with me for practice this coming spring, for example,
such as I could out all my friends.
This story behind this bourbon is really cool.
Louis, it's cool. Because if you haven't, if no
one, I mean, everyone does the bourbon tours, but The
brown-forman Cooperage tour is one of the few Cooper's towards
you can do. And it's only one here, locally
that you can dance. It's an awesome tour and these
they've got people in this Cooperage who've been there, 18,
20 years and they don't have enough seniority to get on the
day shift. I mean, that's, I mean, it's
like, yeah, they take Care of their employees.
And this bourbon was crafted with the Insight of those people
who've been working at brown-forman for so long.
And this is their Cooper's craft and it's for this is an 82 proof
bourbon, I believe, is that right?
Yep. And it's got a it's got a
significant amount of character for it and I popped by the store
tonight to check pricing. It was right at $24 so very
approachable bottle. I think the hunter proof is high
20s, maybe 30 bucks and it locally.
So I mean definitely an approachable bourbon that's
good. I'm a big fan.
So, all right, let's go. All right, Charlie, let's go.
You want to go right into racing?
Yeah. All right, Charlie, let's go.
I mean, this is the story of the week, man.
Let's go. There's certain Legends of the
sport. No.
You know what? Honestly, like hot rod Charlie.
Came out and did his thing, but the fighting off, Rich, strike
in this, stretch run is unbelievable.
Zach, let's go ahead and roll this.
Thanks to our friends, NBC Sports, by the way, for the
footage, we're getting ready to play, but they don't know.
That they gave it to us but you did and appreciate you
appreciate you. Zach whenever I was X not even
like getting the shit the screenshare up yet.
So we gotta be able to go. So in case people haven't
followed the story, it's been all over.
All of the the horse things we talking about the jockey here of
coming down the stretch here. So Sunny Leone is of Northern
strike, Lucia saddle. Tyler is board is a board hot
rod Charlie and essentially It is very obvious that there is
contact between jockeys in the stretch and I was standing in
right behind the Winner's Circle for this race.
Actually, go ahead and play exact humblebrag and now hot
rod. Charlie starts to crank up the
pressure on our calero. Charlie, the five Rich strike,
the foil are collector. No excuses, right?
Charlie, is that get ready to pause them?
So there's the a pole right there.
We lost it. There it is.
Right there, hot rod. This is, this is, by the way,
one of the great rides that rich strike has ever gotten.
He's closer to the pack, he's only 56 lengths off the leaders,
they made the move earlier on with this horse so that when he
did close, Stretch here at Churchill Downs.
He was able to catch hot rod Charlie and you're going to see
him. Catch him here around the 16th
Bowl. Go ahead and play it here.
What? Diggin could posit.
Right there. We just miss him.
Yeah, that's it. Passed.
And we also saw. Here's a son is 22 into Tyler.
Hit them with the whip. I mean, come on.
Didn't have to do that man. Now we've got the better horse.
All of us can see, he has a better horse.
He leans to his left and he didn't you to do it.
The horse was on his good lead. He's definitely.
That's right there. Like what?
So it doesn't photo lots of Reform, no question, he lost the
race, you can turn off, great. So 15 days suspension, lots of
commentary that it should have been longer.
I'm not an expert in suspensions.
I 15 days seems a lot that's a lot of raised days but you know,
had they gone 30, I would not have been mad photos, come out,
you know, and frankly, The reaction on Twitter was.
Was predictable and understandable, there was no
need to defend Leon in that situation.
The slipping saddle, excuse is not a real one, and it's too bad
because that was the chance for us to have that Derby winner who
paid a hundred and sixty dollars or whatever, come back and win
against older horses against a good, a good field man.
Happy saver art collector, hot rod Charlie, Good horses in that
field. What I mean is there some legit?
I mean legitimate absolutely there's a great one winners in
that in that Field, especially after how here all he has to do
is ride it out. All he has to do is shake the
reins of ride it out. He don't have to hit the horse.
He has to have to lean his it through anything, he just has to
go do it. And it's almost as though, the
moment was too big here for some reason, and it's a shame.
And after that, by the way, I want to defend someone that Mike
and I have known for a number of years now, The picture of the of
the Horseshoe on hot rod Charlie that came out after that, there
were people accusing the track photographer at Churchill Downs.
Curtis Cody of doctoring that photo or if someone doctoring
that photo, let me just say that ridiculous completely ridiculous
and and Way Beyond the pale and something that I will not accept
as an argument that he's not theirs.
I'm sorry. It is a terrible thing that
people would allege that he would even be close to involved
in something like And so I wanted to start there.
The second part is, I don't know what's from what I brought up
that I assumed horseshoes were inspected in The Paddock,
apparently, they're not at Churchill Downs in Kentucky.
I didn't know that. I mean, I'm not jumping to any
conclusions on a photograph like that.
From that distance, I will jump to conclusions about Sunny
Leone, elbowing Tyler, who laughed at him as they crossed
the Finish Line first because he had screwed up the ride.
And so I think all of those things together, it's just a
shame because frankly it would have been Some to have Rich
strike win in that spot. It just would have been.
It would have been great to have him validate his spot and then
say, hey, we're going to go believe.
We're gonna go be the closer in the classic that picks off.
Third place picks off, you know, place, you know.
Oh, maybe we, maybe we push flight line.
Now, he's probably going to find out if I have it, right?
But, you know, makes it interesting for him in that
field. And instead, we have to talk
about this and I just don't think you can put Sunny Leone on
him and the Breeders Cup, I don't think it's okay.
And it's really A shame because that was, he was there.
If they just ride him out, if they just hand, write him out.
He wins. And let's also remember that
after the Derby he was suspended for days or careless riding.
I was just went in, in May that was his forced to Fourth
suspension. In six months are no eight
months since the previous September.
And so, I mean, you know, I think we're getting Riders get
suspended. That's part of it.
I mean, it's part of the sport. I mean, I get it but we're
talking about, this is such a blatant one and you don't have
to say anything after the race when you Who make excuses
immediately are people that are guilty generally speaking.
And so he didn't have to say anything after the race.
The fact that he did points to me that that it was not above
board and so I won't hear that excuse.
I also won't hear doctored photo allegations and so I'm on the
side of Tyler's reaction is the real reaction which is come on,
man. Why did you even lean into me?
You had the better horse, right? Yeah, so I think we'll see him
in the Clark, Rich strike. I've heard Breeders Cup man,
yeah we'll see. I think Clark makes unbelievable
sense for him, though. I agree with ya.
So, all right. Well let's move on, but let's
move on and we'll talk about your your lung shot longer.
Thank you. Wouldn't like a super launch?
Nobody's gonna fit a 6 to 1 in this race?
Yeah, yeah, I mean, we're not like double-digit like that.
So, pulling off the. It was a 2-1 morning line and
all I said about him was, you know, I think this is a horse.
He's been there. He just had a bullet work at
Churchill. They had him on the track for a
month and it all came together here.
Go ahead, Zack. Who heads our then, it'll go to.
But I mean, essentially senior Busca door.
I said if it gets too it's too fast out front next by.
Yes, and you talk over this thing.
It's a bucket, is that kill this?
So the Zach stop there. Yeah, this isn't, this isn't
what we wanted. I don't know why this popped up
is the savior boosted or thing, or maybe it would pass, but
essentially, I said, if he got to, if it got too fast out
front, For whatever reason, just go ahead and say, your blues
guitar has that kind of closing Speedy reminded me a little bit
of bezel, one kind of closing speed in this in this race.
He had one at a mile before, it'll be interesting because I
think with a horse like that, you have to take the shot of
the, my lat Breeders Cup just for the check, but it's two
turns, he's not to turn horse and so it's interesting how
track to track these things change.
And I don't know how you feel about it, Mike but do you?
I understand why they have the dirt mile.
Do you think it dilutes the classic field most years?
I mean, I think again, I just go back to this horses having to
make choices and I think that's always kind of the fun thing for
me to watch as they kind of see who goes where and it kind of in
some ways when I was caught, when I was really hot and heavy
in the basketball recruiting World.
Sure you're sitting back and you're watching like, okay, you
know, that this kids going to make their decision based off
what this kid does and you're watching all these moving Parts
kind of happen. And, you know, and I probably
equate that a little bit too much.
Of kind of reading the tea leaves.
So I think it always adds this just interesting Intrigue to it.
Now, I will say that, you know, you and I we haven't shot away
from the fact that the classic Fields the last couple years
have not really done much for me.
This classic field obviously with flight line is any reason
flight line and it's too bad because the the meat the meat of
it behind him is very good. Yeah I did see something.
You know, come out where they lose, someone said well they
felt like epicenter was by far and away the second best horse
in that race and I don't know if that's legit or not, I think the
fight for peace. It may be right.
I think the fight for the second best horse in that race could be
pretty amazing and I think there's but I think there's a
legit Choice like do you go for that more than likely second
place? Purse money which is still
pretty solid or do you go for that dirt?
While it does. It does it change your ability
in the breeding shed to say? I've got a Breeders Cup winner.
Verse I had to go someplace. Yeah I think with a horse like
epicenter for example you run them in the classic because he's
already won the Traverse, right? I think that he's proven himself
amongst three year olds. You know, if he finishes second
and everyone go people who are in the breeding world aren't
dumb, they'll know that flight that flight line was in that
race and finishing second meant that he was the best of the rest
of the crop. Right?
And so there's no shame in that. The other part is, you know, I
got a text from from like Mills are guy in Texas and he was
like, hey man, just throwing it out there.
What about Le true scope for the dirt mile?
Hmm. And I love that.
It was, it was an angle, I hadn't thought about she is a
get out front, stay out front type in if she doesn't have to
go Go. The mile and an eighth distaff
distance in that cult in that group.
She might be the best Miler over to turns in the group,
especially if she gets a good draw.
She gets a first for kind of post.
I would think about that, really seriously?
If I were faster Gutierrez run against the guys, do it in the
mile and and just figure out if she's able to do that because it
won't be like she's confused. She's used to running to turns,
right. It'll just be a shorter run up
to the first turn. Then she's used to and
essentially, you know, if she's able to pick just get out front,
stale, front-run, 23 and change. Whatever it is.
I think she can be a serious Contender.
It was a great text message to get for my kids.
So I'm glad to be able to bring that to are but I You know, if
your life is gonna have Mike on the show more often, by the way.
Thanks. Oh yeah, absolutely.
I thought it was really good. Our anniversary special.
I like them. I like to have them on.
Well, I like Mike in general, but yes.
How do you do it? So, Mike, you're welcome to get
those shots at the Panic before they completely just torque
down. Looks, so it's there have been
construction over at Churchill Downs, right now.
It's so it's pretty rough. But, but no, I, lots of options
here. We talked about it before by.
He decided not to run here, but to run it.
He was going to run in France when I was going to run back in
a tasket and so you know not having him come for Breeders
Cup, open up the turf a little bit more.
We'll have our guy James while Shawn before, by the way, for
some Breeders Cup coverage before we get into all that but
I you know that opened up that filled the distaff field feels
wide. Open could a horse like
liszewski switch, classes do something different, my senses
do run during the distaff I get it.
But if if I'm in ownership there, if I'm Pastor Gutierrez,
the trainer I'm thinking about thinking about the mile.
All right. I don't want to like this is not
really on the show sheet but we got it.
I do think we just got to mention that.
Life is good. Did exactly what we thought life
is good was going to do and and Maiden won by five lengths or
anything. But I was the closer it would
but it was sloppy and whatever. I mean like 343 now on and off
track. So that horse good on all
surfaces as far as excuse me all you know, dry wet, whatever for
dirt surfaces. And so hopefully, you know,
right. A 113 Echo base speaker by the
way. Oh, darn it.
So yeah, no nice horse for sure. And now I want to talk Here with
the awesome again is even though I know the odds, don't say it is
defunded beating Country. Grammar a bigger upset than
senior biscuit or beating injunction oh and John Chen.
Yes. No the senior boosted or field
was less was lesser than this to funded beating Country Grammar.
No because country grammars attend for a long horse.
Not a 9. Okay.
Yeah it just it is what he actually did.
I think that's felt like a bigger I feel like this agree
with I'm just because I picked Country Grammar and not sure to
find it and not and not to funded.
And I said, I think Susan, your bruschetta is super live in that
race. Um, yeah, I'll agree with you on
that. Yeah.
Why do I by the way for defunded sometimes you get off on staff.
Right? Right.
I mean that's That old adage for sure.
Especially when we talk about a logger Turf races in those sorts
of things. But no, it was good.
Nice, the biggest job, I defunded for sure, I think for
me the thing that I was really more interested in this race is
that, you know, Royal ship did, what royal ship usually does
where we reposition himself, but just had no clothes in him
whatsoever in this race. So, let's go ahead and roll
roll. What we got right here, so it's
still three and a half off. Slow down, Andy moves in on
defunded slow down. Andy the new leader at the top
of the stretch defunded trying to battle back and Country.
Grammar three off the pace with a furlong left to go, defunded
digging down, deep trying to turn away slow down and he's
back in front of length and a half Country Grammar grinding
away on the outside defunded to lengthly.
Are we lost the funded under Edwin, all mellow?
And when Maldonado, that was my favorite part of the weekend.
I'll monado the old Yule Deadwood almond but no nice ride
by Maldonado. By the way, I mean, sometimes
rating those horses for that. It's interesting, sometimes too.
When they get past, you know, when a slow down Andy who's been
a nice three-year-old, by the way, comes up and passes the
horse. Sometimes was FrontRunner see a
horse in front of them and go. Yeah, never mind.
And it does a good job gets him to immediately switch leads.
And he re kicks in takes the lead back and finish a strong.
I mean, Country Grammar is finishing strong at the end
there. He's not going to have that
opportunity is going to be very similar to the track layout at
at Keeneland. So I think, I think Country
Grammar is kind of a toss in the evenin.
The exact for the, for the classic.
Hate to say that because I really you know, how I feel
about Country. Grammar I thought these are fine
horse. I really like him but I think
it's awesome. Even for the exact in the
classic, all right? And then we're going to go onto
the champagne stakes and again, we was a little wet out there at
the big a, but we had another kind of longer shot with a to
have to one with blazing sevens. Flavian Pratt aboard here and
gets the victory with his closing effort, beating the
favorite Gulfport, who finished third and verifying coming in
second. Go forward those out.
The Baptist top reproved Andiamo offer ends a takes the
two-year-old to the top of the stretch in front here by like
that on the outside verifying down towards the round three
quarters in 1911 and four on the other forensic challenged on the
inside by verifying on the outside by Gulfport.
And here comes blazing sevens out in the middle of the track
as they come down for the 16th hole here is placing seventh
verifying is there at Gulfport but it is Blazing sevens to pull
off the upset in the grade one champagne.
Because we also liked Andiamo friends and I race you just to
me was just pushed out a little too far on that.
It's Quinn, just quit. Yeah, so it happens right to
your old racist, man. And so, you know, my sequence in
the sheath this week has a couple two-year-old races in it
and guess what? We're spreading in those legs.
So the it's a It is a wide-open two-year-old class coming into
Breeders Cup Friday, but what do we say every year?
Mike, it's a pretty wide open to your own class.
I mean, the last time we really had a two-year-old single, I
think was Golden Palace print on the turf right as friends,
right? Yeah.
And so it's, it's a, it's going to be open for both the, the
Juvenile and for the juvenile fillies and I think the Surfside
will be the same thing. It'll be interesting this
weekend because what are the good things about the first
weekend at Keeneland is that they do, run these BC, win and
ends. And so the horses get a feel of
The course itself, right? That grass course the dirt
course at Keeneland if they like it.
That's a great thing. We can kind of hope that that's
a predictor for what's to come in the same way that when we go
back, west coast of Santa Anita actually, the American pharoah,
which is going to run on Saturday, could be a good
predictor for what those horses will do come Breeders Cup Friday
next year. And so yeah, I don't know that
we learned a lot in that race because it wasn't off track.
It was at Aqueduct. How does that translate to
Keeneland? The answer is TBD for sure.
But no, there's nothing wrong, especially in that company,
those were horses, all of them that one in high-level races at
Saratoga. And so, there's nothing wrong
with winning by open legs like that.
We've watched father, and Pratt turn into a very fine East
Coast, jockey following his form on the west coast.
And so no reason to think that that horse could show up on
Breeders Cup Friday, be be a factor.
All right, so good stuff right there.
Louis are we? Are we, are we?
Are we going to have any special guests?
He would have. I emailed him.
He would have logged on if he was going to be special.
Okay. I guess not, we did have some
guests lined up by the way. And what we do we have another
one that will jump on something happens, text him and see what
he's up to. Yeah, I think for having the
other special guests on a little early would would be good.
It's not really, I'm right here bike Zach.
We're not talking about you. so, I think another thing that I
thought about doing was just a kind of a general chat of where
we are with the different groups and I for the Breeders Cup, one
of the things that's that's fun about this coming weekend, is
with the Breeders Cup at Keeneland and the win it ends
and you know, tomorrow Friday and Saturday You get a more
clear picture of who's, who's at the top of the class.
If we get a bunch of horses in these races that people are
going to know. And so, you know, on Friday,
you're going to get a lot of the Filly and Mare and then on
Saturday you're going to get a bunch of the cult and older
horse sort of field. So for example, I love a horse
in the Breeders fraternity. That's 10 to 1.
We'll talk about it later in handicapping section, but that's
what the two-year-old races are about.
Go find that value. Go find those horses that have
wild. You Mike's going to laugh at me
because it's a horse that I got to see.
Person. I'm always just that yes Louie
does that we just do that but like for example like the as far
as the the race is that we're really going to look at here and
I do lots of different handicap things like to make sure that I
keep these things in mind but like the Phoenix tomorrow at
Keeneland is a 64 a long race for three and up and it's open
field over six furlongs. How do how do horses take to
that track? And I think Mike and I can speak
to this. We were there in 2020.
The depth of the track at the beginning of this Keeneland meet
and what it's going to be for Breeders, Cup are going to be
very different things, right? It's going to be deeper.
Now, it's going to be, I don't want to call it a parking lot of
Keeneland. But man, when we at War one,
that one, that one, that spread it was, I mean when authentic
got all fronts take off from the classic it was it was not not a
deep dirt course, it just wasn't right and I think the turf
course at Keeneland is always Fair.
Yeah. Right horses when it Keeneland.
I think that's a very fair thing to say and so that's not very
question. It's just how Is that dirt
course, play this weekend compared to what we're going to
see at the beginning of November and so but I wouldn't hold it
against any horse that shows up. Well, this weekend, for example,
right? I think that if someone shows up
at the Phoenix or the Judgment or the alcibiades tomorrow,
really, really well great, that's awesome.
Especially if they show up in that Jessamine over the turf
course. 42 year old Phillies interesting part of the year to
Mike as we get into both the to turn races, heavy to turn races
for the two-year-olds and then the three and up season, right?
We've essentially We're fully into a full month in two, three
and up. Season is there, do we have a
hashtag 3 and up citizen? Is that a thing that we have?
I doubt it very much but oh wait a minute we got a special guest.
We do. Absolutely guess there he is,
there he is. All right, stretch out.
See my blue glasses. Oh Dad.
How are you? That is a that is a grandpa
shirt if I've ever seen one. Absolutely I'd wear them.
Ha ha, I can unbutton it. Yeah, basketball school.
Come get some. That's right. 60's today by the
way, so we'll see how that goes. I want to get into that right
now because Dad and I are going to talk about it tomorrow.
If anyone is listening, danis will Hall of Famer.
Just joined us Dan and I do a show 10 to noon every day, Dan
and I yelled at each other today, and I stopped the
Camellia each other about steroids in baseball and so
yeah, no, not a problem. I want to know that take too, by
the way. Okay, we can do it again and I
said, Dan, I told I so disagree with you that we should stop
having the conversation and then our text line, God bless them
was like Hey wuss, have the conversation?
I've got the conversation. All right, and so we got back
into it. Um, I horse racing is the kind
of the same deal right now, right?
So I mean, it's maybe, um, so I don't want to do the horse
racing side, just the baseball side because we did it earlier
today. Essentially my opinion is that I
Assume everyone's trying to gain an advantage.
In everything. Frankly I don't trust anyone
especially in sports to do anything.
You know, I thought about this later today.
Dan, I think one of the reasons you have this take is because
you were clean. Yeah.
And.and youryour, drugs of choice.
Where Budweiser and Budweiser, I mean like yeah Lily, I've told
you before I saw Mitch so many whoa.
Whoa, I thought we were sober October.
Yeah, I kind of called it a night.
I have been we got here to tell me these things so I can call
him out of that stuff. Now we got a we got a sponsor so
I know you're you're talking about, right?
No, no, you know, I've told you this before I saw it.
Many careers ruined during my playing days.
I have never had a marijuana cigarette.
Touch, not only person in Denver Colorado.
Oh, you don't have to have a touch your lips.
You just have to go to go outside.
That's right, just take the contact high but that but
essentially, you know, with Aaron judge breaking the record,
I don't. And Dan will tell you this.
I celebrated it, I think it's absolutely the American League
record, whatever, like good for him.
I'm happy it happened. And in a time where I was
watching baseball the last one was 61 years ago.
But I still think of bonds as the Home Run champion and I know
that that is it's not a popular take I still think of bonds as a
way better hitter than Arron judge.
I think Aaron judge I would love to know this actually I don't
know what Dan because you you think are Judges better hitter
than Barry Bonds given that were each given that where he is in
his career. I mean I don't want to like
Aaron judge hitting C1 and 62 home runs is amazing, but doing
it in a fight for the Triple Crown is even more so where he's
hitting for average and hitting that amount of home runs.
Sure. And I think he's a freak and
bonds was good young in his career.
Obviously, it was a completely different body shaped kind of
but when he was with the Pirates, but I don't know if he
would have been capable of something like that.
Of course, longevity is going to play on.
That's where the steroids really help out in the.
It's giving that longevity and I'd also I feel like it's a
little unfortunate because I do think it takes away from some of
the amazing things that we're getting from Albert Pujols right
now. Hmm.
And that is not being talked about and I'm a like, I'm a
baseball horse racing guy, right?
So baseball to me is like, and I hate the Cardinals with a
passion because I'm sure that's fan.
Yeah, right. Damn Hunter losses.
Let's go hunter lost for the second time in franchise
history. Right.
But I just the see what Pujols has been able to pull off.
Of in and be mentioned with absolute, Legends is incredible.
And you know, like I'm not you think, you think Pujols was
clean? Man, I just asking, I'm just
asking that a guy. My age is crushing home runs.
I'm just asking, you know, given the time when he came into the
league and he came in young and you would have had, I would have
just had to think that, like, they started cracking down so
heavily when he came down the league, but then, when you start
seeing guys, have that kind of longevity, you got you start to
wonder, you know, I, I would, I would wonder more about Pujols
and I would about Aaron, judge my argument, with my argument
with Louis, Was not that bonds was not a great hitter.
My argument has without the steroids, he never would have
hit the ball over the fence 73 times.
And so, as he why ya, he completely became a different
player. Record is the recognizable home,
run record. I don't disagree with you Dan,
and, and you also have to take into account.
Look how look how baseball is dominating.
I made this argument with Louis this morning, The Cubs who are
have been my favorite team. Since I was old enough to know
what baseball was have a shortstop name.
Nico Horner, who hit 281 282, excuse me, yeah, 281 decent.
Top 10 National League batting average has said, I mean, it's
just the, by the way. The only thing I didn't say to
you today, Dan was remember like, five years ago, they were
talking about putting balls in humidors.
Is too many guys were hitting home runs.
Yeah, I've years ago and how that's completely shifted to the
pictures within five years and I said on the show, I expect
within five years, we'll be back to the hitters catching up by
the way, bonds us average in 2001, when he hit the seventy
three home runs was 328, his on-base percentage was 5:15.
And so to me, it is more his Acumen in the strike zone than
anything else. Incredible.
Yeah. Right.
And Dan and I, what's funny is, I like to actually, I
appreciated that the text line was like, no, no, you don't get
to walk away from this conversation which was good.
For me because Dan, and I find out.
We agree on a bunch of stuff by the end of that conversation
which was like the ship should be totally legal and the idea
that like that, that you should decide before the play
arbitrarily on where second base is where guys can stand is
completely ludicrous and so kind of but mean just put down the
bunt, those guys put down with that stance argument.
I gave them exactly. Don't stand up there and just
continue to hit in the shift, adjust your game.
Let them let them put everybody over on that side.
You hit it to that side. I will say one of the greatest
sports moments of my life was watching.
Barry Bonds get walked with Bases Loaded.
You know and I think it was a great moment.
I just remember thinking I'm never gonna see this again and
this is kind of where blowing I will different just because like
were our age will show up. I miss what the Golden Era of
baseball when I ran the Home Run was dead.
Like they're you know it was her there was not a lot of home runs
but we got we had base Stealers which we don't see any More like
you did. Vince Coleman Rickey Henderson
talking about this today. I'm rains.
Yeah, that was fun and exciting baseball because you got
something on first base he's going to take second and yeah
you got to remember man. I came by 100.
What when I was coming up? My dad and I would always go to
Montreal in the summer and I watched Vladimir Guerrero hit 30
home runs and stole 30 bases. A bunch of times.
Like I loved him as he still my favorite baseball player of all
time. Just that I got to see and I
said look I got to see Tony Gwynn a bunch, just randomly by
schedule accident in in Montreal.
And then I saw each Play a bunch of games in Detroit.
I'd rather watch those guys at home run hitters that part of
the games crafts. Majestic there, Crusher.
And just I mean Ichiro, especially just I just remember
playing baseball. The idea of like moving within
the batter's box to try to hit the ball.
I could never do that. I mean, well, you know, it's
kind of fun because you take that timeframe of baseball and
we'll get back to. Now you're gonna things but a
guy like Kirby, Puckett was he such a Dom, I hated that guy.
So good. Yeah and he would, he was such a
like he was a great hitter them but you he was overshadowed.
Towed by guys, like George Breton, Tony Gwynn and Wade,
Boggs, and just won two titles and four years, man.
I don't know that he was over. Yeah.
All right, what-whatever horse here though.
That's why we were going to talk about.
And I've always said, Dan has three kids, his daughter, his
son and Keeneland, excited to get going.
Here we go. All right, listen, I'm not going
to back down by the way, that by my, by my statement, because of
to me, it's no doubt about it. That Kentucky was better than
Ole Miss, because Kentucky played like absolute crap.
They beat themselves and if they would have shown up, they would
have beat Ole Miss by double digits.
And anyway, I that game frustrated me to no end, but
the, I can't imagine, there was a huge Silver Lining.
Be like, we can play that bad on the road and give the game away
and only, and still beat the spread this Kentucky team.
If, you know, I, if they figure it out that they figure it out,
it's going to get better defensively.
They're there. The defensively.
They're pretty freaking amazing. I took the opposite, which was
that Mark, Stoops need to go get a different job.
Yeah. Okay.
Keep going. All right Dan because I don't
know if I'm gonna I don't know if I'm gonna be able to join you
guys tomorrow. That's why they had to get my
piece right now. We lost Patty Ice tomorrow too.
So I got oh well it's this would be maybe I'll let me see if I
can work it out. I got it figured out.
All right, all right, let's get onto some horse agent.
Let's talk some Keeneland, Dan Issel, third child Keeneland.
So are you gonna be out there at all this meat before the
Breeders Cup? Yes.
We're coming in, were coming in the last week.
I'm taking Louis. I'm going to take Louie.
Louie. Kristen are going to have a
Keeneland experience, and I'm going to show him and turn him.
I'm going to show him what Keith best, the best track in the
country. I ordered a green jacket so that
I don't have to pay admission. Oh man.
All right, all right, that's enough.
All right, I'm gonna dress as a rock, we're going to do a very
Keeneland thing and we're going to do something.
We don't do on the show very often, and we're going to talk
about stakes races on Day. So, All right, opening weekend
and Caitlyn is loaded and it's know.
It is every year the Friday Saturday cards are awesome too
late sequences. Both days are awesome.
Keeneland is one of the few places for example on Saturday
that has a pick five that starts six races before the beginning
and they just say, we do you want to bet the stakes?
So the the all the pick five is all six pick five?
No no I appreciate that about Caitlyn for sure.
The first we're going to, we're going to kick it off with the
pick for we're going to start, which by the way.
What's your Green Sheet sequence?
It'll be on Saturday. It's the all Stakes.
Pick five on Saturday. Okay, we're going to go to race
seven, which is the grade to I'm sorry.
I was looking at Friday, this am I, doing, what am I, what's the
top thing on there, than Louis? What am I looking at there?
I'm sorry, you had it, you just have to worry.
Okay, I got you the great to Stoll, keenon qian keenon Ogden
Phoenix, which is Six, furlongs. On the door, I'm having trouble
pronouncing words by Mike. Do you know what?
Stoll keenon Ogden is Why do a breeder I have given?
I was gonna say I've given that a lot of the law firm thousand
dollars in his Law Firm. That's right.
Oh geez. We need to get a Louis Dan and
Mike steaks and Kima. We are Churchill or something
that is silk and awful and Robo. So I'm last on that.
Okay, that just checking. Yeah, well it's because of the
robo just kind of hits, you know, really really like hammers
it home. I mean, as long as I'm hitting,
yeah, okay. Alright, the Stoll keenon.
In Phoenix, which I'm glad, I don't know what that is.
Dan six furlongs on the Dirt 3 year olds and up three hundred
fifty thousand dollars online for the Sprint.
Race will Louis, I'm gonna let you start first because I don't
know. Dan is there, Dan?
Are you ready to go with these pixel?
He's ready. No II, texted, I belong.
Okay, I stay ready. Okay.
All right. All right.
All right, I want to point out that sir, Alfred James is
running for the 16th time this year that which is unheard that
horse shows up, Every freaking time, he's ready.
Every time they don't work him out, they just put about and
stakes races. This horse is awesome six year
old gelding over, three-quarters of a million dollars in
earnings. He's not going to win this race,
I'm glad he's there, you know? I Dan, I kind of settled.
I'm a little chalky here. I'm wondering, you know, if
sibelius who's won over the track before.
Can come back and win again. Want to Pimlico last time out in
a listed Stakes, one in at Saratoga by very open links
here, Love that they're flying in junior Alvarado for this
ride. It's interesting.
He's had a very mixed up here where he's doing, naira.
He's doing Kentucky stuff, and I made the argument last week,
Dan, I think that's the kind of guy that could come to Kentucky
and really have no doubt. You're right.
I'm your round, yeah. Or at least 42 of the seasons,
whatever it is, right? I mean, just run, you know, that
Churchill spring meet, you know, slide into the, you know, even
if he has to slide out of the ls, meet whatever it looks like.
I mean, he just He's the kind of guy that would get serious
mounted at Churchill and so I have him on top, you know, the
speed figures speak for themselves.
I think that Jeremy Jeremy O'Dwyer for example, is a Sprint
trainer has never won a graded Stakes.
So this is I'm kind of just rooting for someone here, but I
think the sibelius is a serious Contender here.
Randall 109, at Pimlico last time públicos.
Dirt course. For Sprint's is a really good
predictor of success. In other places, that doesn't
always happen with those sorts of things.
But you and I have talked about like the chick Lang.
For example, Dan. That's Great predictor of future
success success. And so, he's coming out of that
neck or Islands in this race that horse has already run.
Nine times this year is an intact horse.
Actually, five years old has run back-to-back. 90 speed figures
both here at, Churchill in that, in that level Thoroughbred
Society with France, Francisco arietta who gets them out again.
I think he's on the come up here man.
And so I'm looking at the six as well.
And then the favorite here is Special Reserve.
I really don't know a lot about this horse because I don't watch
Mountaineer races. And last time I watched him was
in The mud at Laurel, we're gonna have a really dry track
here at Keeneland, so I'll be interested to see what he does.
He does have a one-on-one speed figure over the track before and
is 17 to 16 times at this distance.
I'm a little chalky here. Dan where did you fall?
I hold on. Let's go.
Before we go baby. We got we got aren't Mandela
star. Here is our city are all
perfect. Yeah, I apologize.
Can you hear me? Okay, apologize for being a
little late. I had an alarm set that.
My technology just doesn't work tonight.
There will be a fine involved Ellis.
You are next to Dan Issel, UK, great.
And you're here with me and Mike hanging out.
How are you tonight? I'm doing great.
I'm getting a little feedback. Is that me?
Or is that I think it could be coming from you but I'm not 100%
sure. Yep, it's got definitely you're
muted yourself there. So it's it doesn't sound too,
too bad on our own. It's just a little bit of a hum
in the background. We don't hear you at all else,
so you got to unmute it. So so Dan you were going on?
What were what were your pics here in this race.
We we're starting with my pick of the weekend, okay?
So Billy Sebelius roles here. Okay, Special Reserve won this
race last year, but He had he didn't want to come out here.
If this is a legitimate grade 2 horse still maker, doesn't ship
him to Mountaineer to run in a 75,000 race.
Sebelius for all the reasons that Louis said, up-and-coming
141, at Keeneland improving buyer figures and he blew out at
the Thoroughbred for training. Center in 34 flat which is this.
This is my bed of the weekend, so, bilious.
I love it. Okay.
Are we going to get some pics here from else?
Or else has taken a very other? I got all my technology is
working. So great though.
All right, good. All right.
The feedback is gone now. Yeah, me to it and have all all
trades here to pick the horses like this.
But, yes, it really is kind of sticks out.
This is, we could do a webinar today.
I can't remember it. We do you think and talked about
this horse quite a bit? It's just very interesting, the
way he improved, even though he was good with blinkers, four
races back. And the last two Junior Alvarado
seems to really get the most out of him and he's 52 2 versus
Special Reserve to 21. I would hope that holds up.
It would be very nice to get it in terms of odds because it's
not just about the best horse. Of course, it's also about
getting some value. What you think I have and I
wouldn't buy them. At 625 but I would bet him at
1:55 for sure Necker Island Manawa.
Both got a shot, Manny was kind of interesting because way back
in his PPS and one of the things I use it with our race lens
product which is what you see lifetime PPS way back on that
way back but an October 2016 to 2020 at Keeneland anyway I ran a
race that at least comparing speed figures to kind of
normalize against was a 1/16 Billy's got a 113 last time out,
Special Reserve, one sir. He last year winning this race.
So many was interesting at eight to one.
I think is a horse using Exotics in the race.
Yeah, we know, you know course, many Waldo also over 80 and 20,
22 and just wondered kind of what happens on that front, but
I kind of look at this race where you got the up, and under
cover and sibelius it at 14. Races lifetime is lightly run,
compared to this crowd and this is like this is like the
Old-Timers Day at the track or whatever else.
I mean they're pulling in some horses that have had significant
track experience but But everyone seems to be on the way
down as sebelius's. Coming on the way up.
So it's interesting. You know what?
Yeah, for right, only 24 year olds and raised, so he may have
not run his best race yet. Yeah, it's interesting to, you
know, so Ellis stars with us and I should point out, we should
fully introduce them into the show a tuber Capper on Twitter.
If you want to go find him. They're all of this stuff at
Keeneland as well on like some fireworks.
Okay, you're good. I love this show.
I love that. He's guy.
Maybe Yoda not more of them to say.
Okay, okay. I appreciate all of the things
that are happening right now. Exactly.
Ellis there. Ellis.
What? Percentage of the time that you
go to the track? Do you wear a hat?
Well, I can. I wear it every day.
Okay. You know, that's the way that
people know me because that's my Twitter handle.
So I was very worried when you came on without a hat that it
wasn't actually you, it was your brother or something.
Yeah, right. Okay.
Well, good, L star. Like I said, Uber Capper on
Twitter, go find his stuff and Aquila.com of course.
All right, we're going to move on to race eight, which is the
JPMorgan Chase Jessamine. It's a great to 350,000 our race
and it's for Phillies two year, olds and up.
And I always find this interesting.
When we have new people in the show else, I'm going to ask you
this question. What how do you when you get
these higher-level two-year-old races?
That are, there's just such limited information.
What is your go-to? That you look to when you
handicap a two-year-old race. Well, I mean this is this a
turtle race and I'm not trying to avoid the question.
Any means it's a little more complicated than the simple
answer. These are horses run a couple
times and yeah once you get that an early three year olds, you're
looking for improvement and these are athletes.
So with this kind of race, a couple things Is How They Run.
Two turns out they run on Turf, are they improving?
Weather its position improving your running faster basis versus
speed figures. So this when you get erased,
it's this good and believe me this race, the alcibiades, the
Breeders Futurity with 12 and forth.
This is kidney candy store stuff.
I mean, this is good. This is Breeders Cup prep
because you're not going to have these kinds of fields except for
these kinds of races. And so again, it is to you'll
Race but there are two year old Maiden races allowance races.
Those are little different. Once I get to this level, it's
just okay for three or four or five horses are going to
improve. Which one can improve more?
What's the one? The public might not see coming
and there's various ways to hit it.
So I mean, Just to jump into and you don't ask for picture.
I'm say give example is the horse I'm going to pick which is
have a Lenka. Yeah it was on the rail of ten
to one and there's nothing special about sampling compared
to the other horses. But she's been on Turf twice.
She ran second and first he's improving and she's got a
trainer that a lot of y'all and heard of the I hadn't heard of,
I mean it seemed the name on the Kentucky Circuit with Beckman,
his name is B column width and I couldn't remember He came up
with and Christina blackard help me out earlier.
Today said, he worked for Pletcher for years before yours
and so, this is going to be another guy like Braun that came
out of the Pletcher mentorship. I mean, unbelievable.
He it out of a Lucas tree, right?
I mean, frankly. Yeah, that's right.
Yeah, that's right. Back that giant family tree.
Yeah. But Beckman show. 64 44 on the
year, but he's 448 last 90 days. He's just starting to really
catch fire. Now, Now and this is example of
this Improvement is to ask your question to the question, kind
of like, it's with your braces, it's improvement improvement and
more Improvement and then figuring out which one might
improve more love it. Okay.
What is the site we have to watch for every year to is how
do horses come out of Kentucky Downs, right?
Different. It seems different year-to-year
Ellis and so I've been impressed actually performance to
performance at the Churchill need in September.
Especially those Kentucky down sources, actually came out
pretty well. Yeah, well because of big fields
and it's the same as Saratoga, you get harassed and you also
have feels horses. It competing in 40.
Northfields this was a 9 and I watched the video of the race
again. I remember I think I saw it live
but she battled the last for those who don't know.
Kentucky down some key folks. To Kentucky announced the
stretch is basically 5/16 of a mile.
Yeah, she goes on forever, right?
And she got hooked up and she battled the last three
sixteenths, head and head and she would not let the other
horse buyers. So it was pretty, it was pretty
impressive in terms of mental. Toughest back to your
two-year-old thing. Yeah.
You if you have a chance to watch videos and say, Yes, how's
the light bulb going on? I mean, are they understanding
what they need to do? A lot of them.
Don't get it for quite a while. Hmm.
All right, so we got your pick. Is the one anybody else stand
out to you in this field before we move on to mr.
Issa. It's a 13 tax implications gets
in. That's the other wind main when
Contender for me. I think happy yells got a shot,
knockers go ahead and I'll get back there to knock your socks
off in one second that don't want to know.
Awful eyes, of course, but tax implications for Chad Brown.
If she gets in very impressive. First time out of the mile 1 by
7, Chad Brown for those that are not too long.
Not too far away. Russian troll rushing fall 2017.
Chad Browns, off a tremendous Maiden win and he's trying to
repeat that again. So, this could be another
rushing fall for him. Long shot.
Knock your socks off. Absolutely, going to bed.
A couple bucks to win. Maybe when Place using some
exotic. When a colonial Mi first time
out, not a good effort to Kentucky Downs.
But that was the day that started to rain and it rained.
And they canceled the last three races, and they completely took
the next day off, and the course was a bog and she moved up from
8th to third. I don't do a lot of pedigree
stuff, but when I look and I see a dams had some winners I check
who it is. Knockers the only other main
full of this dam is a horse named Bob and Jackie, which some
folks may have heard of me. Not mostly Man of the West Coast
Bob and Jackie was first or second and 10 of 17 on grass or
and a half a million bucks and flattering perhaps writing this
32 one shot. So that's my long shot thing.
All right mr. Itzel if you don't stop calling
me. Listen, you grew up in Kentucky,
you respect a guy like, you know, I will call you Dan.
He'll stop coming up the show. Dr. All right, Dan I'm going
with towhead, this has got to be the unluckiest.
Horse in America. She went she wins a maiden at
Saratoga and they make it a no wedding card wagering event
because they couldn't get the Starting Gate off of the off of
the course and a zealous just said, as she ran second to chop
chop who I like in the alcibiades in a driving
rainstorm and she her nose in a 500,000 dollar race.
So I'm going to say is finally told.
It's genius. A couple others that I looked at
in here. Bling G Watts.
Humphrey! Look like that.
Filly, really woke up American pharoah out of a fort learner.
Mayor shouldn't be a distant, shouldn't be a problem.
American Pharoah's are running great on the grass.
She really woke up that Turf race and I'm a little intrigued
by blind spot and now she's never been on the grass but
she's out of a boundary mayor. So that shouldn't bother her.
And and as the distance distances get longer she seems
to get better. So those are my three.
That the three that caught my attention.
Yeah I with Ellis here, by the way, I think tax implications.
By the way that horse, trough said you have to use it.
It's a no brainer there. I think the connections number
one and just that that Monmouth one mile on the turf, just makes
a ton of sense in this spot because it just for the distance
for all the That you have to do at that track, it just makes a
ton of sense. I couldn't really come up with a
bunch of horses that I love here.
I'm interested in a horse, like, recognize the 9 Jr of arado.
For Bill Mott who wins third time up in?
You know third time out, I should say in a maiden comes
back and it listed Stakes. Runs runs Third, Kind of up the
track a little bit, a couple open legs.
Can that horse could bounce back?
I think a lot of Junior Alvarado.
So, I think that's a kind of horse that can hit the board
here. God bless these two horsies to
you. Old racist because frankly, you
could get a lot of value here, but I'll just mention those two.
So, two years ago, we saw Aunt Pearl when this race and then
come back and win that Breeders Cup juvenile fillies.
And if I remember Louis, that was one of the most impressive
rides in that juvenile day. It was awesome.
It was awesome. And then, of course, the mm
Pearl really never did anything after that Grandeur.
What kind of the Edgewood and then.
So hopefully we see another great winner here who goes on to
race in that first weekend in November as well.
So it's so before we go to the next race.
Yes, I mean, Mr. Starr needs the since we're calling, apparently,
our guest mr. So Ellis needs to know.
So we know with with the initial you're getting Budweiser.
What is the Ellis star? You know, adult beverage of
choice, or is there no adult beverage of choice.
We've had a lot of both on. This always, always changing off
right now. I'm drinking right now, that's
in that. Not this very second, but my
drink this week and they've last two weeks has been something I
discovered. It's a town branch bird.
Oh, yeah. Finished off in.
In finish off and maple step barrels.
Okay. I gotta say that.
I'm not a big fan of like the regular expression of Town
Branch but then I tried their foolproof, like their Barrel
proof and I liked it quite a bit.
So, and Sherry, casks, which I can't find anymore, which is
really good, not too sweet. And this one is finished in
Maple Stout barrels. And it's very, very good.
We're going to stick with the to roll Phillies and we're going to
move to a grade one, racism on 16th, on the dirt, for the
Babies. And we'll start.
Let's see. We haven't started with the and
yet so we'll start with Dan Dan go ahead and let us know who you
like me. Also babies.
Yeah, I have P pieces. That don't have odds.
I sent you the new ones so I know for the weekend.
You did but not yet? Yes I did.
I don't know what Chop Chop is on the morning line.
Twelve. Twelve to one look at you.
And know this is a Philly. I love Brad Cox.
He's putting Joel Rosario up which I found interesting.
City of Lights, Out of a Giant's Causeway.
Mayor shouldn't have any problem the dirt after running a mile in
that rainstorm at Kentucky down she ought to be fit.
I thought there were all kinds of horses in here that were
attractive, Raging Sea, for Chad Brown.
We need, we mentioned those connections before.
I'm I'ma play against run and feisty that Pocahontas.
She came. The last three sixteenths in 33
and one which Bowie Robo could come three pink Center.
He's my play against a couple others that I found interesting,
infinite diamond, and just Cindy, just Cindy her first two
races were excellent. I don't know what happened last.
Timeout sure, but to write meteoroids that's what's going
to happen. Every once awhile right there,
just going to not fire. I'm going my man, Brad Cox and
Chop Chop 12:48 shot. Dan's long shot right there.
All right Ellis, you agree with Mr. Mr!
Dan since I can't go home again, a couple people, some things
I've done this week like why are some of these words is starting
out on grass and a lot of trainers when they have a horse
they know as no early It apparently will put them on
grass where they know it's not as important and get it.
Plus you also get bigger fields and helps them to not get
discouraged. So, chop-chop certainly Horse.
By the way, Brad Cox amazing record, 19, 455 the last two
years going Turf to dirt. So you know, 40 a little less
than 40%. My topic is infinite Diamond.
I looked at this race. I watched it again.
I hadn't seen it. Originally another 10 to 1, by
the way. I mean, it's a good that's a
good number. Yeah, big number 8.
Six Echo be speed figure which was a tie for the best in the
race 14, length win and talking about Patrick being constant,
usually starters horses on dirt thinking back to some other
horses that he's had, that were good 2 year olds and mostly
early three-year-olds at the Indiana and sole Volante.
He started them all on the grass at Gulfstream and then he won
the Tampa Bay derby with one. You won the Fountain of Youth,
with another one. Giroux is not writing for Cox
here. Really, really intriguing for
me. Being cones horse.
I know he is separated think after Breeders Cup, he's
separating with his longtime agent.
A great are but this would have been a braid, our horse, they
put them on 59 and to work since leaving before leaving Florida,
just very intrigued. By this feature, is your new
sire out of more than ready, Marian Diamond, really
interesting. I'm Myles not to turn to the
still good. I Know Dan said you'd like fun
feisty, I get the time issue, but visually impressive six, why
she pulled herself. I mean Ryan Julian leopard
didn't move a muscle and she just pulled herself to the lead
and then Drew away. It was a pretty good number.
This will be your second round. So she's going to be stronger
and McPeak. I have it on another, I think I
have it on my notes for the British maturity.
You make being Rattle and Roll last year in the Futurity, but
he also has one with or Runner finished second set five seven
or five times and both between the alcibiades in the British
Futurity the last few years. His horses in October and
November at Churchill. In Keelan do very well.
And this is this kind of horse 07 too slow for win, bit.
Got to use it. The one Wonder Wheel, Mark
Cassie two wins in a second stretching out after a second.
The spin a way to leave. No, trace an into Mischief.
Fantastic reading for going to turn so Naga, to fair.
I mean infant diamonds tend to one, that's why she's my top
pick Raging Sea. I Know Dan mentioned a big, big
one there and then an interesting.
Horse for Wayne the 12 take charge Brianna.
I agree Pratt. Yeah, you notice Pratt.
Got off of Raging Sea, even though there's a rides, you
could easily have taken them out back.
You got off the right particular brand of we wrote last time as
well, you know, seven Furlong horse.
I curling so I'm not worried about a thing out of a war,
front mirror. That's produced of dirt, route
winner, and Lucas and 12:45. You know, it's kind of horse
against some of these races. You got about two bucks to win
cause you Want to be kicking yourself, the workspace, 40
bucks, so, but in fact, that is my top pick, and any of the
other four, might take a look at some other ones including
chop-chop, and that's a good pick, Dan, I think you can go
short here. I totally agree about take
charge Brianna. I think she is totally set up
for this race. Totally touch, trustee the move
by Flavia into this horse. And and, and the coach to get
this home. I just I can't look away from
funding feisty and Mike will say this, I pointed out if I see the
horse and person I am totally into the horse and I got to see
this one in the Pocahontas and it was as you said, Ellis
effortless. I mean, she just it was freaking
effortless. He didn't, there was no whip.
It was just hey, let's start running.
Literally just did this. And she said, okay let's go to
the front that sounds great. And with with two-year-old
Phillies, I am more interested in who's interested in being in
the front, then any other kind of anything else, anything else,
10 Phillies. And and so I think she's I think
the Is definitely the play here but if you want to play a longer
shot, I totally agree with almost at the 12 as well.
One thing to point out for folks and most people know.
But the Mi six you, that Keeneland is the first finishing
short. Yep, very horse.
Has to make a move. They got make a quick move on
the turn and then go, you can't make a move after they turn for
home is not enough room and that moves you put in on the train
last time going, okay? Back to the head is the kind of
move that wins at a Model 60 degrees, by the way, that's the
thing. I think I had that annoys me the
most about human is the to Finish Line's you and I are in
the same house. Just okay.
Yeah, sure throwback. I believe the last horse to win
this race to go on to win the Breeders Cup.
Juvenile fillies was British idiom, three years ago and then
the last horse to win this race to win the Kentucky, Oaks would
have been Silver Bullet day. Maybe I could 98.
So that is we've got this horse. This race has got a lot of
history grid horses that have gone through here.
So hopefully, We'll see another great two-year-old, fear,
Philly, Champion, coming out of this house baby's.
All right, let's move on to Saturday.
We got another three more, really good.
Safe traces on Saturday. We're gonna start off with race
seven, which is the gray to Thoroughbred Club of America.
Mi six was they call the third Club of America mile.
But six furlongs on the dirt, is it 6 for 10 years, that I'm
sorry. It's all right.
Eight furlongs Lily puts it on the, on the teleprompter, my
fault. My flan burgundy's, going to
read it. Third Club of America.
It's, that's The race. It's six furlongs.
I think so mi should not be there.
Okay, on the Dirt 3 year olds and up, three hundred fifty
thousand dollar purse. We'll start with Ellis, Ellis,
who do you like in this one? It's a your honor.
I'm sorry. It's not a race.
Wait, I'll go. This one.
Is a good one. Think of the next one.
I was gonna say this one's excellent.
Yeah, what are you doing? Yeah, that's great.
I agree with you, the good. Yeah.
Value. I had the money line, I forgot
it, but just Todd Fincher's, really good trainer, most
logical. Don't know how good he is.
Mostly races in New Mexico. He wanted to see how good this
Filly was after she won, you know, seven of her first nine
and shippers Del Mar. And she won a classified
allowance Race by five and a quarter beating, a horse and
Grace Adler. And then the next step winter
and Midnight Memories. Then she comes back and runs in
Rancho Bernardo and she got headed, ran head and head for
About three-eighths of a mile. Yeah, that's right and seven.
Clear the next horse? Something interesting I noticed
because I'm a senior boost Boudoir.
Fan for those who don't know Senor brewski door.
He just won the he won the ACT last week.
He was my log shot last week. There you go.
Yeah. Lover.
You get and he got what? He was 13 to 7 to 1.
That was fun, huh? Yeah, I'll take seven to one
Ellis. I'm not I'm not paying you.
So Todd pfitzer, transferring booster who earned his winning
to the Breeders Cup, dirt Mile. And I saw, I was just for the
heck of it. I said, oh, you know, I want to
see if they work together because there's usually ship two
horses to a circuit. And I went look back at Sydney,
Bruce korf, peepees was still had and race lines, and I saw
that September 21 worker was identical, so they had to have
worked in company on September 21 and of course, they went
separate ways after that. This really worked at a slower
for furlongs, but the fact that she worked with the male who
just won the ack, acks takes really Has been kind of excited.
So select she's just fast as she doesn't necessarily need to
lead. You can be second or third,
early come, but I think Drew can do what he wants with her, the
others, Tom Cottage Boy. You know, you don't think you
have a horse stuff off, Brad Cox and maybe you didn't, but this
horse went to Paulo, but maybe just need to get mature that lay
off from December July. She came back as a totally
different horse career-best first awful, laughs career-best
second off the layoffs. She's projected to be the lone
front-runner here, and even a joyful Kansas fast, pump clouds,
could be faster and you know she could get an easy lead and
slammed has to stick with her otherwise she's not being here.
Okay, Louie well it dangle last look at that first time in his
life. All right, so I lied on a long
shot this race. I think there's a chance that
the local class shows up in this race and joyful Cadence has run
a bunch of second places. Locally in a bunch of very high
level Fields behind bells of one behind Bells.
The one before that wins at Prairie Meadows.
I love the price at 12:50 with regular Gutierrez.
So I think I I just I have the 8 on top here.
I think the three as well has a shot here which is Club Car.
Another Second Place, where's for second place finishes in
five rounds hasn't had, I read Ortiz aboard.
I read the kind of the kind of jockey that pushes you from
second to third or second first, excuse me.
And so I love Club Car in the second spot here.
I also think and I think Ellis mentioned Palm Cottage, I think,
in the second, in my third spot here makes a ton of sense has
won the last two times out at the at different levels at Ellis
Park. Ark.
They ship a ship are her up to Saratoga winds as well that
horse no excuses here. I think absolutely as part of
the deal you know on this show we talk about is this a grade 2?
Is this a great to feel to me. This feels like a great 3 plus.
So those kinds of horses, have a real shot here.
I also like Caribbean Caper didn't fire last time out, but
15 straight before that jumps up at Colonial first time out this
year. Doesn't fire give her some time
off. Come to the Churchill Downs.
Training track runs on 46 + 3 / 4.
Furlongs last time out. So maybe that horse is really,
really ready to go. And so I'm going to try to beat
else's favorite here and go. 8, 3 to 4 in this leg.
I think I like the for, as well. I can't get on club car because
I think low Carla's to finish second, but I do like, I think I
Reds a kind of jockey that pushes you from second to First.
We'll see Dan. Does anybody know why Bell the
one isn't in here? I get those good question.
Her up to the to the Breeders Cup.
I'm guessing. Yes.
Yeah. My topic is the for Caribbean.
Caper she as Louis, just said she was 5 for 5 last year as a
three-year-old got got her prep race out of the way, was at
Colonial was was At six Furlong at the six Furlong marker in 9
and 4, she gets Jose Ortiz, a very big upgrade.
Albert stall knows what he's doing.
I'm going with Caribbean. Caper, by the way, I also am not
upset the bills, the ones on this race because I'm the whole
sconce and bells. The one like I thought was a
rule that they had to be in the same races so it's like, it's
not upsetting to me. I said not do that.
Yes, right. Alright, let's go on to some
Once and back-to-back grade ones here, we're going to start with
the Claiborne readers for charity and Louis was really
excited about this race in the let him go first, it's mono 16th
on the dirt for two-year-olds six hundred thousand dollar
purse. He likes.
Come on Louie spill it. So, we're on the ninth race
here. I have, this is my long shot of
the week and this is totally biased against a horse that I
wash but frosted departure. I knew it ran off the dang
track. The last time I was here, It
again. The prostate departure comes
home, there's something about settle.
The, the only thing I worry about with this horse is
sometimes we see horses that are every other and the pp say that
this is an every other, but if it's not, if we get the Kenny
McPeak last time, one sixty percent were in the good spot
here at 12:50. He and Brian Hernandez.
By the way, 21%, the last three hundred and forty six times,
they've said horses too. The to the gate to me, this is a
this is a spread race if I'm picking you 10 to 1 to win.
It's a spread race generally speaking.
That's how I play. Two-year-old races the to, as
well, logins is coming out of a maiden win.
This is a brad Cox special. No one is better at Sprinter out
at 32%, the bread cocks, this this reeks of, oh, I got florals
roo-hoo. Just fired his agent because he
gets a bunch of rides from Brad Cox, which is horrible.
Apparently and then And the Seven I have as well in the
third spot Forte. I read Ortiz, Todd Pletcher
Mike's on the show with me, I think no one places horses
better in Kentucky than Todd. Pletcher, I think it's very
intentional. He doesn't ship horses and or
place them in these spots without really, really serious
spots. He's a sprinter out at 24%, kind
of guy as well. And then, if you get into a
deeper, I think, baffert's horse here, by the way, calmer Road,
the 15 is set up for a massive spot.
Your if he draws in and so don't don't overlook the the also
eligibles here. I think his times at Del Mar
makes sense in this in this spot it isn't.
It isn't Sprint to route or whatever with him but all of the
numbers make sense and so don't overlook him.
And then lastly in the in the Five Spot instant coffee another
Brad Cox coming out of a maiden win Sprint around as well with
Luis saez. I'm just, I personally just
Fanta Louis ideas and so I have those five horses included here.
Mr. Mr. Dan yeah, I everybody knows I'm a brad Cox, man and
logins, logins breaks breaks his Maiden in 15 and 4 at Churchill
very impressive. Instant coffee, he did two
things in his Maiden win that are really difficult to do.
Number one is to win at seven furlongs, which he did in a very
good time. The other thing is he came out
of the rail, came off the rail, Of the one post.
It is very first start but I've got to go with Lost Art Arc.
I'm sorry because Marion Ravenwood the dam of Nest.
The damn who will be three year old Champion Philly.
The damn of idle, who's a grade one winner and I know that
Pletcher likes, this horse a lot key when after he broke, His
Maiden at Belmont. Wayne Lister who bred the horse.
And so leading ask Todd why he didn't go in the hopeful and he
said this is a to turn horse and that sapling, I he gets Pratt, I
may be more with my heart, then with my head, but I'm picking
Lost Ark, love it. Now let's well, I am going to go
one better than you. We I'm going to pick six horses
here now. Haha, I'm kind of kidding, but
you got three for a couple injuries.
If you include the tooth, we asked mrs.
Ellis, wait, let me get a pin. I won't remember all six of the
show. The show is recorded, and he
doesn't want to do. They keep, I'll send you a link.
It's all over the Internet, sorry.
It's not whatever Nest. By the way you mentioned is
running and The building on Sunday.
But basically the reason I kind of killed about the six is
you've got to ask me since I'm not even going there.
You got to Pleasures to Big Pete's into Cox's, but, yeah,
well, the six I think Lost Ark is the one really didn't have
the moon. I have a very small, very small
horses to watch list and it's hardly ever a horse that wins
usually horse. It's in trouble and I watched
the sapling and I made a note that just said Hardly asked most
of these Phillies don't have to turn experience or two term
Williams. She does, she improved
tremendously to a 94 Echo base people figure, the only ones
even close as long as I'll get to with an unheard-of figures
retiro, but it was in the Sprint and as Dan pointed out nest, and
idle and violence, violence, I wrote it down again, somewhere,
violence last year in the last year.
Like 30% dirt route winner. As you know just you know, it's
the second or third crop 621 is fantastic, the other half of
that. Uncoupled injury is forte 3 2 1.
Okay, 74. All I'm still hopeful, I'll
probably use all six in pick threes and tickets like that
logins. 108 example, be figure which you usually won't see
until you get to Derby time for three-year-olds and or early in
the prep season just really fast.
Ghost, zapper a blame. There's I'm a problem with two
turns Cox Sprinter a fantastic. Not going to be four to one
probably more like one jobs perfectly definitely gotta use.
I'll try to speed it up here the other half of that enters into
coffee, but 32 ones just hard to take on a horse that's just
about as good, but no better than the rest and then the make
pizza 10 to 1 and 12 the one. Yeah, God.
That's hard to ignore because frosted departure on the rail
coming out of a big one. That's a 98.
That's the second-best figure in the field with seven, furlongs
written out. Gas in the tank.
The dance produced a Route, winner and McPeak again, Rattle
and Roll. Last year, I found some of my
notes signalman s simply ravishing in the alcibiades.
There's no one else bodies. Like peaches points is worth
over this race and the other one hone, The Three Mile Island.
16th, a big race second beat the length of curly Jack, who might
be the next big thing? Sure we are COI.
Maybe a little further back than he wanted to be in that race lip
Rouge riding back. Sharpest tack.
I think it's his first crop. He's had a lot of success so I'm
going to make a token win bet for sure.
I'm telling you, I'm prostrate departure and honed.
It may be 5612 better, but lost ark is my main plan Direction.
This race is traditionally just loaded the horse that goes on to
win. This to has a pretty good career
where I don't roll one last year.
He's had a nice career, not maybe, not for sure that people
five. But before that essential
quality Maxfield, Nick's, Go free, drop.
Billy won this race in the never won a race again and then
classic Empire. Wow.
That's a pretty good match. Brad Cox Mark.
Cassie K McPeak. And I forget the other one so
that's a pretty good list that's as good as it gets.
Yeah. That's not a 42 year olds as a
good year olds. Yeah.
Because usually when we see these two year olds perform now
I feel like they're usually a flag.
Forget it man, we never see him again, right?
So that's all. All right we're going to move on
to the the next grade 1, which is the turf model.
The cool more Turf Mi again. It's a mile on the church.
That's why it's called the church while unlike what I said
on the other race, we're going to see some familiar names here.
Classic Causeway who seems to still be undervalued as a term
for some. Not really?
Exactly sure how that horse is 21.
I'm definitely would play that. Just, you know, a 21 Skies.
Go to shot same thing as a 21, right smooth?
Like straight is in this race. Louis, who do you like only
likes Ivar know a lot in this. Usually, and so, who do you like
in this one? So, I've always had my group of
horses to include here, but, man, I'll end on a Cossack read
done, nothing wrong. Last two times out at Belmont in
the J /, and then in the forest are Dave.
What's interesting is I like the progression of that horse,
coming back from the Arabian Peninsula.
So we talked about that a lot of this show.
It is really hard for horses. I don't know.
The reason it doesn't matter to come back from the Arabian
Peninsula and then run. Well, the next time out, we saw
this horse and kudos to build Mont 640 longer at Belmont.
Come back. Just when the race he does it,
he does a by half a length against a really fine Frank L
Force, interesting, me read and then they said, okay, it's time
to To go to turns and do the thing at Saratoga.
He says, okay no problem in the four-star.
Dave, he wins against real glory.
I think she is the absolute favorite of Saturday, for
example. Okay.
And so he comes back. He beats Mason as well and Soca
secretes on top for me. Five to one.
I know we have a new morning lionmaker at Keeneland 52 ones.
Knock it up, a Cossack read and that's fine.
But I I mean God bless him. If it does that, that'd be
great. I would love it.
I have 27 satin in the second spot.
The weird part about Santan is I'm not basing it on the
Arlington million was just happened here because I think
the turquoise are Churchill at that time was not at all.
Like the the turquoise that that horse is going to tackle at
Keeneland this coming weekend and that's as nice as I'm going
to be and I'm going to move on. And so I think that that horse
has a serious shot here. I do think I've are has a
really, really serious shot. And that's Horse that has won
over. This course, has one with a
serious speed figure in the in, it was at this very so, I mean,
frankly this tration 2020, thank you.
So two years ago and so it's a horse that's shown that that
Acumen to do it at Keeneland. So to me that's that's another
horse. It had to include to me.
Smooth like straights are really interesting horse and this is
where Turf racing is really interesting.
Especially in the United States where this is a horse at 77 for
22 lifetime. It is never won at Keeneland but
any of us if we looked around and that was the horse that won
this race would be like, oh, how did smooth like straight win
this race? I don't think that, that would
happen either. And then I think you have to
look outside as well to the five Mazen.
I'm not at all. Sure how this horse is too. 21
morning line. And this is where yeah for sure
run four times to 11 this year. Second place here at Keeneland
less time out over the good going and and else can speak to
this more than I can. It's, it feels like something
happens in Keeneland that I don't understand where the the
turquoise is always good. Maybe there are goats that just
walk around in urinate all the time.
And so it's always a little wet and I just don't know.
I get that horse. If you want to explain me, I
absolutely want you to, but that's the last horse there,
there's a horse on the outside that's and also eligible to 13
that I will mention as well. I think at owned, by the way,
has hit the board four times at six runs this year, just a
horse. If you're if you're playing a
try or a super include the 13, two-tone at that horse Drazen
that's all okay. Let's help us.
Let's hear the explanation to know this because Right now, of
course, opposite. In the fall, we've had 30 days
of no rain. No, man.
They're watering, you know, the heck, out of the course to keep
it sound in the spring, the mornings are cold.
There's a lot more do on the ground.
Mmm, the grass is wet Without Rain in the spring and less.
It really warms up and you get a lot of heat.
Little days aren't long yet they throw moisture in the grass in
Spring at Keeneland normally does stay good.
It would have to be hot or not. Any do in the Earning very low
humidity for days and days in a row, it just doesn't happen.
So that's why you have a lot of good horses of keying on the
spring, it'll be firm and maybe even hard for this race Dan.
Dan has will just love that to a level that I can't explain to
you. Like, he thought that was the
greatest thing that's ever happened.
As far as explanations of of courses.
Dad, how much did you love that? It was the best.
It was, it was Thank you. I love
before the three you guys were born so yeah, you can call BS on
it if you want to do is the point.
Yeah. Back to my motto of off and
never in doubt, I think is going to win this race.
Three years in a row. Hmm, Ivar is He's head of the
horse. So amazingly, well, he knows
this horse so well, and the patterns are so explicit to me
of what he did. I'll take a side trip and say, I
don't know if you guys remember the Sword Dancer this summer at
Saratoga gufo won the race. Hmm, and I'm very well.
Hold on my peepees. Last year, he won the race
Clement took blinkers off. He took blinkers off for this
year's race and I missed called love.
I love me remission at 12:45. I had a small exact If I would
have hammered it, we had him on the show.
Yeah, keep going. Yeah.
And so what Lobo did in 2020 was you ran the worst June and
September the tourist mile. He ran third took the blinkers
off for this and he wanted 14:1. It was his best race ever.
Not disgraced it all that. Your fourth in the Breeders Cup.
Mi comes back in the spring after 6 month layoff last year.
Fourth in the in the this race second off the Last year and
then third the British commander even better even though he
didn't run as well. In the first mile leaves him off
again this year. The vembur July because back in
Indiana wins The Schuster so impressed.
By the way, Mike and I went there.
It was so impressive. He's perfect.
Yeah. Is it got worse when you get him
to the middle of the track? And there's nobody in front of
them. Yep, just stretches out his
strength up and then even Iran. S, the, with my Mi is a
million-dollar grade one. The same as The Bard games is a
serious horse. Yeah, my games will be the
favorite in the bridge got Mi. There's a real question that so
here at second to him and he's beats finest Sound by a neck.
He want a pattern of 106 2113, I'm looking for progression.
The numbers don't matter when he won this race, in in September,
twenty twenty went 111, 122. We actually running a little
faster this year, but the blinkers come off and that's the
key to I've are doing the same thing.
He did, two years ago, that being said, cast a Creed is
good. I think he said 521, I've
written five to two Could be wrong.
I five to one of my this is drf but whatever.
I have to to I think this is Bill Maher.
Coming off the four-star day which is of course, another gray
one almost a million bucks, but I'm going to give one more horse
out and that's outside set-piece 12:45.
I agree, especially Keen washable 11 for 23 in his
career, Brad Cox, I went back and watched the video of the
Maker's Mark Mile and April come in, which make great one of the
great blanket finishers ever. Yeah.
Oh yeah. He's seventh meeting tool.
Yeah, but I'm not being disrespectful Giroux, but Drew
did not write in the way. He wants to be ridden.
This works had never been that close to the PACE.
He's three wide. The whole way.
He's totally uncomfortable. He took all of his leg kick away
and then he got it back next time about the dinner party.
He got him back last time out in the Baltimore-Washington race.
And now I guess Rosario, I mean one of the king of closures here
and it's a set piece. I think set P PSI of R will be
12th and 11th early and running as a team Lee and he's 15.
One so old and if I've are wins, he'll be the he'll match.
The last horse to win this two times.
Who did it one year? Then didn't do it the next year
and then one of the next year, who was that horse Dan?
Why is Dan? Who was it?
Can't remember what I had for breakfast tomorrow.
Come on Wise Dan come up with it was Wise.
Dan that is correct. Let's go to our own way.
Sighs Dan right now, who? Of course, everyone.
I think love watching. Why is Dan?
When he, when he ran? So Dan?
Who is your wives pick here? Yeah, you know I kind Kasich
read it's very seldom or horse gets get starts running as good
as he's ever run when he's 6 years old.
Yeah, but that last race at Saratoga is unbelievable.
They rating off of a half and 47 and for they come the last
quarter and 23 And he gets there under PSI is, so he had to run
his last quarter. Mile sub, 23 seconds, I think
Satine is certainly in the mix, but I'm going to give you a
horse not to sleep on. That's a order of Australia.
He won the Breeders Cup mile on this.
Course, A couple of years ago, he came over for this race last
year and for some reason just didn't fire at all.
He went off the favorite. It but ran ran 12, but he has
been running against some of the best horses in Europe.
All grade. Last three starts four out of
the last five starts grade ones and, you know, cool more isn't
stupid. So don't take the one only thing
I worry about or Australia, the last five races either going
right, handed or straight straight line races.
And so I worry about that with him.
But Be fair to him. He only won one of those.
Maybe he does want to give a Keeneland and go left-handed.
All right fellas, thank you guys for joining us.
We little bit of a long show today but it was worth it to
have R to Fantastic guest today. So Ellis and Dan, thank you very
much for joining us. No, happy hour is one hour.
There you go Dan. I will.
I will probably all try to work it out so that I can see from
our land. Ellis.
I will be out of Keeneland next Friday, so if you're around,
let's catch up and assign it Kentucky to win by three
touchdowns. I think it's gonna depend on
will not let his plays are not right.
I mean, hey, Ellis will be out there Friday and Saturday of
British cup. So make sure you so, especially
Friday brought their 10 to noon. We're going to be doing our
show. Just kind of slip by it's called
radio row By Radio row I mean they put pub tables on the
walkway at the back. That's what they did.
The covid. Your that's not what they're
going to do for this. You sure can do.
Yeah, I was, I was out there today and they've got all the
chalets or up and all the snow. Yeah.
All right. Look, it's looking really,
really snazzy right now. So I'm not going to do the same
thing. I'll give you my number, you can
text me, I'm there every day. Thank you so much for jumping
on. All right, guys, we're going to
pay the tab and get out of here. This has been when the horse
racing happy hour.
