All right kids, gather around. It's time for another edition of
the Horse Racing Happy Hour. My name is Louis Ribeau, hanging
out with producer Zach Mike. Very close to Zach, but not on
the show. That's.
Listen, I'm gonna, I'm gonna first.
First of all, I want to give Mike a shout out for being
horrible because he's in my side, my side of town, and we
were supposed to get together and he texted me.
He's on your side of town. Yes, and he texted me yesterday
to say he was too tired at 2:00 PM to meet up.
That sounds about Mike. He was too tired of 2:00 PM.
There you go. I'll hang it out with you.
Producer Zach Louie, Robo Horse Racing Happy hour.
Got some stuff to get into here. Of course.
We come off the Jockey Gold Club.
We come off the Pacific. What a cup.
And and we've answered. We've answered some questions as
far as our four year olds and five year olds are concerned in
that older dirt male class. We have not answered any
questions As far as I'm concerned in that three-year old
class. We got a ways to go figuring all
of that up. But of course, I think we'll
answer those questions sooner rather than later once we get to
that breeders, Cup, classic, draw field, etcetera.
Thanks for joining us. If you are hanging out with us
live on an otherwise football night, I think people are going
to be getting into that obviously.
But you can watch my lions lose later.
Just hang out with me now. It's cool.
Hang out with Louie now. It's all good.
So there you go. Big day in our state, Zach.
I was there for the first. Ever legitimate sports bet?
Let's call it what it is. Plenty of sports bets have been
wagered in this state. Not on the up and up, if you
will. And so good to get a little bit
of the governor in there. I thought he did Zach the It's
as good a bet as you could place being the Kentucky governor and
that was Kentucky football over the season win total.
Louisville over the season win total and Duke under.
Because in very few places to the two state schools.
Just like a common opponent. We have that here at the
Commonwealth with Duke. And so there you go, Smart.
Whoever's giving advice to the governor's office about
gambling, doing a good job, Kentucky, the fastest to market
from vote in the legislature to actually implementing it here.
So that was a real positive. And so real fun to watch those
things happen. It's interesting, Zach, when
bipartisan things happen, they actually move along with some
kind of ease. It's very strange.
So good to see that here in the Commonwealth was good to be down
at Churchill Town. It's good to see people too, you
know, at, you know, at at Churchill, at the track itself,
the people that work there that that helped us out and
everything else ran into Andrew. And I mean, gosh, Darren and
Kevin and Greg and all kinds of folks down there today was good
to see. Everybody did not run into the
governor. Be real, real clear about this.
So I've heard if you run into him, someone else runs into you,
but usually the force. And so, yeah, I tried to try to
avoid doing that, any of that today.
So I did not run into the governor.
But there you go, horse racing happy hour.
You can find us on Twitter, by the way, at Horse Happy Hour.
Find us anywhere. And if you're not watching the
show, believe it or not, I have a face.
You can check us out on Spotify, on the video feed there, on the
YouTube as well, and then of course on our Twitch stream.
If you are a Twitcher and so will find us there as well.
Get into it here Zach. I know you're sort of getting
these things together, but had a couple of upsets as far as I'm
concerned, as far as horses that I think have a legit shot to win
the classic. Here's the here's the hang up
though, is when we talk Pacific Classic, for example, we get
Arabian Night running, a style that Authentic ran at Keeneland
in 2020. And if that's a style that can
win, especially with the same trainer, then why couldn't we
see that again this year, especially with a horse of
grand? Well, at Delmar, could he turn
around, train at Santa Anita up to the Breeders Cup Classic and
then run really Well, I think he can.
I think that's the answer. I really was high undefunded
going into that race obviously didn't run the kind of race
that's going to qualify you automatically for the Breeders
Cup Classic. So we didn't get that from him
this past weekend and so a little disappointing on that
end. But I do think we got some
clarity as to who the top top horses are and the answer is the
three-year olds in our in our you know our two turn, you know
our two turn you know world that is the Breeders Cup Classic and
try to figure out who that is on the older dirt male side.
We talk about it a lot on the show.
Fall in love with the Phillies because they race as mayors,
fall in love with the cult. If he's good at three, he's
gone, and sometimes he's good at 2 he's gone, right?
He's off to the breeding set. So you know, fall over those
Phillies and mayors. For this reason, we're seeing it
in the classic this year. The rationale for us talking
about that over and over and over again on the show, watch
Latruska race three or four solid years of just terrific
races over and over, taking on the very best in North America
in her races. Those are the kinds of horses
you don't find on the men's side of things.
I do think, look, on this show we have forces with whom we
have. We have jokes.
We have, you know, drinking games and those sorts of things.
And why the barrio was hurt? Me, one of those drinking food.
However, you've gotta actually think of him as maybe the over
2/3, right? Now it just is what it is very
strange here, and so I'll be interested to see who ends up.
Shipping the pen and needle pull the classic.
I do think this is the answer we end up with, and I joked about
this on our ESPN show, that which would be in this role,
that here's my positive spin on the breeder.
It's going to be a good. Petit And so it doesn't always
have to be high quality for it to be great.
Petit great to have a hard time figuring out who can win.
It falls in the middle of the late season on bridges of the
Saturday. The greater stuff that we can
play in college football. By the way, I want to talk
there's a lot of conservation about.
Blue, you're breaking up People, people.
Okay. Is that better?
A lot of consternation about that not being like the
highlight of NBC's evening on a on a football Saturday.
I have news for everyone. It is considerably better for
horse racing to be part of the normal programming of sports
networks, Period. Conversation over it doesn't
need to be highlighted as its own thing.
Not everything is the Kentucky Derby out of first Saturday in
May when the only competition is the Final Four or you know, I
mean, you know, excuse me, Final Four is over by then.
Is is baseball. Stop this.
We got to stop this kind of madness about about the Breeders
Cup Classic needing to stand on its own.
It doesn't, frankly, that it leads into football beats.
More people are going to watch that race.
They just will, because they're tuning in for another game that
comes up after it, and they'll just TuneIn, more likely than
not, for that Breeders' Cup Classic.
I understand the whaling and gnashing of teeth over it.
I get it. You want it to be the stage.
I think. Normal for the purposes of lots
of things. More eyeballs normalizing the
sport as part of the larger landscape of American sport.
It's better off before a football game than it is by
itself on a network that's not involved with college football.
All right, enough of my. Enough of my.
I will say that you know the hardest part about entertainment
in general and especially American entertainment is.
You don't get visibility until you generate money, which is the
opposite of the way you feel like it should be, right?
Like, so to say like, oh, horse racing should be a featured
sport on ESPN that's out front in front of football or on NBC
in front of football. Football generates billions of
dollars per month, right? Like per month, right?
Yes, that's right. Yep, Dan was lamenting this
morning on our show that only 9 million people watched the
Florida State game. Exactly.
Exactly what? How to lament is that.
Stop it. That ain't it, man.
That's not what we're doing here.
No, this is a good thing overall.
So let's get to two of the horses that did qualify for that
race. We want to talk about Bright
Future. He wins the Jockey Gold Cup at
Saratoga first. This was a horse we talked
about. This is when I said, look, I
don't think Pletcher is placing this one in this in this group
by accident. So here he is.
Bright Future is the 8th horse in this race.
Proxy, of course. The one, the former Grade 1
winner, excuse me, a Grade 1 winner trying to qualify here
for a win and you're in for the Breeders Cup.
He is just behind. Horses need some racing room.
Rattle and roll needs to do better.
In the meantime, Clapton launches a very wide bid as the
field turns for home Bright Future.
Is up to take the lead Tyson There's a beautiful spot for
proxy in between if he's good enough and bright Future Has a
length and a half lead with a furlong left to go running
strongly. Proxy center of the track.
Clapton and Tyson bright future digging in.
Proxy's trying to get him bright Future or proxy.
Bright future proxy. Here's the line photo finish
bright future and proxy in Wow 203 flat is is is not a not a
make you notice kind of of time when we're talking about a
classic race it it temporarily now if it's like 204 and change
we're talking about not good and very slow and all these kinds of
proxy there really does interest me because he may look that
horse runs really well fresh and they're going to give him a
couple of months leading up to the Breeders Cup here.
I think there's a chance of Proxy's very live on Breeders'
Cup day and you're going to get a solid 6 to 701 on that horse.
And so that's just a neighbor name to remember.
I don't know if, excuse me, a bright future is going to be
part of that Breeders' Cup situation.
Now if I'm the ownership and I got a free ride, I'm shipping,
let's go get platter out there. Let him run the horse.
He's going to have other horses in the Breeders Cup in general.
So just get the horse out there, take the free spot in the gate.
Heck, if he hits the board, the check on a $6 million race alone
is worth the ship for sure. And so also you're talking about
breeding. He's already a Grade 1 winner.
Now we're talking about the ability to put that on your
resume as well. He was Breeders' Cup class
placed or whatever you want to call it.
And so just a a big opportunity for him.
Cool race at the end there. Your your reaction was totally,
totally apt, Zach, as far as how close that got at the end.
But yeah no kudos. I mean we talked about I said I,
you know you couldn't leave that horse off your tickets cuz that
is it's not a pletcher accident. That horse wasn't there as a
rabbit or anything like that. That's something they that's a
horse they thought had, you know a serious shot and and obviously
he did And so want to thank NYRA, by the way, other YouTube
channel and Frank Miramati on the call there up at Saratoga
for that replay as well. Out West, of course, it was
Arabian Night, the Baffer trainee.
If you followed us at the Gold book, Gold Book, bets.com.
By the way, if you'd play the first, second, second, first,
fourth and first horses, it might pick six for 10 bucks.
You would have had the pick six for $355.00.
So very cool. We had it very skinny, ready to
go 2 singles in that sequence for us at the beginning and at
the end of the horse that I really liked at the end of the
sequence came through flying under Juan Hernandez in the
finale there at Delmar, which is really great.
What we need to do though is look at the Arabian Night
performance again. Classic Baffert stuff man.
Where we get we, we get this, this front running and then he
seems to rally on the rail. So here's that call down the
stretch in for the lead. Arabian Night tries to save him
off. Go rocket ride chasing from 3rd.
Skinner is running on late and senor Booscador down the center.
Now go rocket ride in the blue. Cap on the outside coming
gamely. Arabian nights.
All heart battling on Slow down Andy.
Any one of these three. It's Arabian night hanging on Go
rocket ride. Arabian night has won the
Pacific classic go rocket ride finish.
Slow down Andy getting some of the money there Senor Booz good
or charging late interesting because I think going in people
really like to go rocket ride ahead of an Arabian night there
in that three-year old class no questions asked and so to get
him frankly go rock and ride very strong at the end show the
10 for lungs we're not the the issue you know wit nine in the
Haskell last out turns around runs a good Pacific classic
definitely expect to see him in the Breeders Cup classic.
They'll let him train up until then and so you know I I excited
to see that group it it's so hard to know Zach with these
with these baffer trainees that are so good in that last stretch
that have that extra kick they're ready to go with with a
horse like Arabian Night. Is he going to show up on
Breeders classic day Greeters Cup classic day.
That's a leave out at your own peril kind of horse and I
actually feel that way about go rocket ride as well.
I think that horse has a serious shot at the Breeders Cup Classic
this year and we'll we'll just have to see in a couple months.
We will be out there. We did get our credential
approvals from British Cup this week, which is awesome.
Thanks to Jim and the team out there, we'll be bringing this,
so don't worry. We promised you a chemical and
we'll still be bringing this with us out West to Arcadia.
Thanks for hanging out. If you are a part of our live
crowd here, I'm Louie Ribeau, hanging out producer Zach here
on the horse racing happy hour. Let's go ahead Zach.
You know what? I didn't so Air Camelback is
going to join our our radio show in the morning.
Just a I I have to tell people with the advent of sports
wagering in this state everybody was caught up in it today.
I can't even express that if you work at all in horses or
wagering or media or anything your day went down as as being
involved at one of these sports books.
So my guess is Eric because if people don't know the tracks are
really they're in charge of the of the management of the sports
books all the regulatory aspects of it run through the the tracks
and and so anyone that's involved in horse racing at all
had to be, you know very keenly aware of what was going on
around the state and the Governor made a bed in
Louisville and Lexington and those things and and so I'm sure
Eric just got caught up with those.
He'll join us and we will release that as part of the
podcast tomorrow. He's president of the national
HBPA and make sure that so that we can, You know, we'll ask him
about some of those issues, the takeout issues, those other
things that that horse players are concerned about.
But I just wanted to mention because of that horse racing
101, our friends at the Maryland Thoroughbred Breeders
Association, marylandmillion.com, make sure
that you get out there for Maryland Million Day this year.
Of course, the Maryland million is the Million Million Day,
excuse me, is a showcase of all of the very best about
thoroughbred racing. They're in the state of
Maryland, great partners of ours and so make sure that you are
checking them out. They have an update every
weekend on the on the the runners in that race and I want
to make sure that you are checking them out.
marylandmillion.com Stay updated all those contenders weekly
Maryland million Watch Learn about the sponsorship
opportunities by those club tables.
Heck we'll see you at the 38th annual on October 14th.
The Maryland million. Make sure that you get your
seats for that one as well. We haven't had the full
discussion, Zach. Should the horse racing happy
hour be part of the sponsorship team for the Maryland Million?
You know my take on this 100% think we should.
So I think we'll end up doing that.
So John, if you're listening, if any of the good, the good people
in the office over there at the Maryland Thirdbred Beard
Association hanging out, we will be getting in.
So I will send you all that paperwork tomorrow.
So look for us, our stuff out there at the Maryland Million,
October 14th there at Laurel, of course, down near halfway
between at Baltimore and DC We'll get with Eric tomorrow.
So let's just get straight into it, Zach, we can do an
abbreviated version of the show tonight.
Yeah. And talk about the handicapping
here. Well, before we we move on for
Horse Horse Racing 101, that's the National Horseman's
Benevolent and Protective Association.
For someone who might not know what an HHBPA is, You know what,
this is a good point by you. And so Zach, do they, do they
sort of talk about what it is that their purpose is?
Who do they represent at least? So, you know, in in horse
racing, almost more than any other sport, there are so many
layers and and groups involved. And you know, who's speaking for
a group? Who's speaking for a trainer or
an owner or a jockey or you know, the person that you know
taking the bet, you know this kind of thing set in the morning
lines, whatever that might be, lots of different people
involved in the sport. What would the HBPA be
advocating for? So their take on their own site
about them says that. Horsemen have always taken care
of their own. Anyone who is sick or down, down
on their luck, they passed the hat to take up collections and
that the HBPA is there to provide a voice for thoroughbred
horsemen. Yeah, So, So I wanted to get
that side of things because so often on shows like this, it's
very easy for us to concentrate on jockeys, trainers, things
that we see on the track, our our betting side of things from
from the horse player perspective, try to talk from
the track perspective. But what about those horsemen,
the people that are in that training behind the scenes that
are in the ownership groups, that kind of stuff.
Who are those people? What do they want?
And that's what we'll talk to Eric about tomorrow.
Especially with the advent of Hysa and the rules from the
federal government, we'll be able to talk to him about that.
And now the people are starting to understand what the costs are
to the tracks to have this oversight.
I think people are starting to wonder if it's worth the juice
is worth the squeeze there 100%. All right.
So. So we want to thank them.
marylandmillion.com. Go ahead and check them out.
Make sure that you get down to Laurel Park if you're on the
East Coast. Man, that is a just an
absolutely great day of racing. So just a real fun one, one that
we always cover on this show and I'm sure we'll do a significant
amount of handicapping and that kind of stuff on that on that
card as well. So all right, let's get into the
the handicapping section of the show though.
The big race is this weekend. Zach are down about two hours
South of me and Franklin in a place called Kentucky Downs.
And your boy, today in the gold book, I gave out three Louise
Longshots. Two of those hit today, which is
great. In the first five races, How
about that? I had three Louis Longshots,
which in Kentucky Downs is called chalk because there's no
favorites in Kentucky Downs. So we got into that today.
So that was awesome. I have an actual paper ticket, I
bet today, and I did that on purpose so that I would have
money for next Friday when we're back at Churchill.
And I can go after the show and head out, use that money for the
early pick three and do the damn thing.
So excited to get racing back here.
But before we do that, let's spend a bunch of money on purses
at Kentucky Downs. They've got five races to end
the card that are all great at stakes.
In fact, you you haven't been doing the show long enough to
know the trends at Kentucky Downs, but these were not graded
races, even even last year or the year before.
And so for them, because they're offering these persons and who's
showing up for them, they have moved from, you know, listed
stakes, black types, whatever, up into grade twos.
And I mean, to get up into a Grade 2 status is not an easy
thing. And they have 5 races of grade
two or better status on the card this weekend.
There's two of them. Oh, man, two of them might be
grade threes. Two of them are grade threes.
Excuse me. So two grade threes and then
four races that are grade twos or better.
The first one of those is the exact systems.
Franklin Simpson, it's a great twos, Race 8 on Saturday going 6
1/2 furlong. So we're going to start a little
bit to the right and curve around to the left.
Grade 2,000,000 bucks in this one.
It's a 3 year old race, so a lot of names in here that people
will recognize either from the Derby trail or from those those
earlier turf races that we covered on this show.
Frosted Departure, Private Creed, Luke and Knights in this
race, most stash. What other names have we seen in
here? Mischievous Angel is actually
and also eligible in this race. So horses that we've talked
about pretty significantly. On this show, I landed on the
6th on top here. Speaking of Louie longshots,
Playlist is here Wesley Ward, John Velasquez.
Wesley Ward had a couple of longshots for me today that were
really great. Johnny Velasquez picks up the
mountain here. Hasn't gotten a win coming in
today there, but playlist coming off of three straight wins,
we're talking about a Sprint here.
So this is a little bit less of having to figure out, you know
figure out the course and those kinds of things.
More just about the speed. This horse has decent early kick
is going to have good staying power late as well coming out of
a win at Saratoga before that at Ellis Park and before that at
Turfway Park. I love a horse Zach, you know
this that could travels track to track and I think we'll be able
to take to Kentucky that was just fine.
So that's six playlist at 12:50 landing on top here for me and
race eight. I also looked at the number 10.
It's two of a kind Speaking of long shots for Brian Lynch and
Declan Cannon. Declan was aboard the five horse
in race 5 for me today. Hey, Zach, do me a favor, lean
back from your mic just a little bit and in two of a kind here
Declan picks up the mount here. He's having a very fine meet.
I think he's up to four or five wins already at Kentucky Downs.
This is a horse who hasn't won yet this year.
But when we're talking about turf sprinters, it's a bit of a
different, a different animal. This is a horse that hasn't
finished further than two legs. Back in two runs in April and
May came back in July, but they ran the race on the slot.
So we're going to, we're going to draw a line through that,
through that race, the quick call a listed stakes up at
Saratoga because I just don't think the horse wanted to be on
the slop at all. Easily the worst speed figure
for that horse in the last three races, but still picked up a
check for 3rd place. So it's not like the horse
didn't try, it just it just wasn't their day.
Brian Lynch, I really trust in turf sprints.
He goes at 15% and those wins at 14% on turf in general and at
14% in graded stakes. And so I do think the two of
them, Decky Cannon and Brian Licht can be here.
So I went 10 to 112 to one in the first two.
The seven horse here is Sweet Cherry Pie.
I read Ortiz gets them out here. He was in town today, so he
actually got to see the course and get kind of the layout of it
again. I do think it's different enough
that for some of these guys they need to, you know, they need to
be there a couple of days or they need, you know, some time
around the track. But I think I read got that
today he's riding for Rusty Arnold.
In this case, two of them don't get together very often, but
this horse came off the slop winning at Monmouth before they
ran a couple of good races at Ellis Park in the Churchill
Downs. I'm really leaning more on I
read here than anything else. And then I did land on the 12 in
the last spot here behind Enemy Lines is the horse that started
its its career in Ireland, has moved over stateside, has been
running really well, one immediately in the Cutler Bay at
Gulfstream Park going 7 1/2 Furlongs.
So we're actually going a little bit shorter with this horse, but
I actually like the one mile experience because I do feel
like when you're starting going up that hill and then down to
hill and then up a hill, it's a little bit more than 6 1/2
furlongs on the horses. Then you know, say out of flat
track, almost won the Pen Mile back in June and then came back
in August really recently. Ran pretty well behind Carl
Spackler, who's turning into one of these really, really great
turf milers that we have stateside.
Tyler Gaffe, Leon picks up the mound here, won a couple of
times today, had three run wins coming into the day, really is
starting to feel Kentucky down. So I do trust him as well.
So they're in race 8676107 and 12 for me Race 9 is the ladies
turf. It's a it's a mile race.
It's a great 3. It's a 1,000,000 bucks for
Phillies and Mayors 3 and up. Some names in here that people
might know. I landed on the Seven Horse here
New Year's Eve. It is the favorite for Brendan
Walsh and Tyler Gaffaglione. I do think this horse is going
to have a serious shot in this one.
Brian Brendan Walsh already having a terrific meet at
Kentucky Downs as one does when you're Brendan Walsh.
This horse coming out of a win in the preview day at Ellis Park
going a mile comes back for Tyler should have a really good
chance here. I don't mind breaking from the
seven in this in this spot because we do get that full mile
run up. So full, I think 2 furlongs
before you even get to the part to that right turn on the turn.
And so I think the horse I will do just fine with Tyler aboard
here. So I did land on 7, the favorite
here. Then I went to the four.
It was a 15 to one horse. Cuero Bin Durada is the name of
this horse for Paolo Lobo and Joe Talamo.
And these are this is a pair that I really like.
They team up at 17% all over the country.
Turfway Keenland Ellis Park or live in the region at least this
is a horse in that same preview race as New Year's Eve only lost
by a length at a quarter but did win the time previous to that at
a mile and a 16th again And and this is a horse by the way, that
last year won an allowance race over 7 for along to Kentucky
Downs. So it's a horse that's won over
the track. We get 15 to one.
It was Joe Talamo that was aboard the horse last year in
those races at Kentucky Downs and so excited to see this one.
I love that 15 to one number with Paolo Lobo who's 2 for five
at the meet so far. I don't think we're going to get
that steep of a number but if that number stays in the double
digits with Cuero Ben Dorada that's a horse I would actually
really lean into for say maybe it across the board bed or
something along those lines. That's the four horse tomorrow
or excuse me Saturday in race nine in the three here White
Frost is the favorite nine to five.
I would have a hard time making any horse at Kentucky Downs 9:00
to 5:00 but they did that here So Joe Rosario Belmont
interested to see if they can connect.
They have been miserable at Kentucky Downs over 12 together.
So I do wonder though this horse. 2 seconds and three
thirds at the distance in five total runs.
So never missed the board. Never been worse than second
frankly running at the distance on turf.
This is a gainsway bread. Home bread.
They still own it. A candy.
Excuse me, a daughter of Candy Rat.
She's 5 now. Can get the distance we've seen
it before. Has finished second or last
three races at Churchill Ellis and Saratoga.
So we'll look for her to possibly breakthrough tomorrow.
And then I went to the one horse and I have immediately after
this all question mark because I do think a lot of horses can win
here. I'll regal realm finish behind
white frost last time out by a length in that de la rose at
Saratoga. Going a mile with Laura Giroux
keeps them out here for Jonathan Thomas.
Do like them here for Rodger Ruthman sneaky go to Kentucky
Downs too and so interesting to watch him excel there and so a
real chance I do think you got to use as many as possible here
because I'm just not sure who's going to win 743 and one there
in race nine. Race 10 is the turf Sprint.
It's grade two. We're going six for a long.
So they move the the gate up just a little bit to try to make
this a little bit shorter And for that reason I'm going to try
to buy. I'm going to try to grab horses
that are on the rail because essentially you're turning
immediately One timer is the one horse coming in for Larry
Ravelli ET Baird is driving down the two of them by the way win
it 40%. Now I get it.
A lot of that is up in Hawthorne and and that's where Larry just
dominates. He wins at 32% overall.
However, this horse 3 for three on the synthetic.
We've seen horses move from synthetic to that track at
Kentucky Downs really, really well.
So I expect this horse is 4 for seven lifetime on turf and three
for three on synthetic. You put those together, that's a
horse that's seven for 10 with a second and a third.
So missing the board exactly once in its life on turf or on
synthetic, that's a horse I think you absolutely have to
include and I think is the most likely winner.
Nine to two would be an absolute gift on that horse front row.
the Fed is in here, the two horse for Ray Lou Gutierrez and
for Chao Karamori. And I am I'm interested here
mostly because the horse did win last out of colonial showed some
speed, some really fast speed. 2143 and 55 for the splits
really, really fast. Came from off the pace a little
bit and so I'm interested could we get a horse that gets to
settle in let's say right behind one timer who is going to try to
go for the leader at least in a stocking position in the one
hole Good frontrun the Fed be that horse that's right behind
it does you know does its work later in the race.
I'm not sure I that's not how Ray Lou Gutierrez usually wins
races but I do think there's a chance that he does it on
Saturday. The third of the three horse
here is Olympic runner 15 to 1. Javier Castellano, winner of two
of the, excuse me two of the classic races this year on the
Triple Crown trail gets. Olympic runner who did win last
time out also ran second three back in at Gulfstream Park but
is essentially second off the layoff here for Mark Cassie.
Mark Cassie already has a win, a second and a third and six runs
at Kentucky Downs this year. This horse has won this year.
Like I said last time out in an optional claimer at Colonial in
a in a Sprint really fast 15 to one just seems like a super long
number and like front run, the Fed is going to try to do its
best running late in the race. And then I went to another horse
here the the 8 horse after that no balls and we've watched no
balls a couple of times ET bear jumping off of this horse to
ride the one I think that's worth noting for Larry Ravelli
who picks up Herondo Corrales here.
The two of them hit together at 40%.
I do think the horse has a serious shot here ran in that
that Troy the grade three over soft go at Saratoga before that
ran in the Garrett and won it at Indiana over firm go going 5 for
longs and so more interested to see if that horse no balls can
run back to his best form there. All right and then let me see if
I've got other. I think I got one more horse I
wanted to talk about in that race.
He had the seven let's talk about the seven.
Zach. Why not Cogburn's in this race
that's a horse. Ricardo Santana Junior who's
actually having a really good summer and has been on this
horse a bunch has won its last three races so it's just a
winner once in a while. Kentucky knows you just want a
horse that that just wins 4 for six this year.
Three in a row as we mentioned ran behind Tejano Twist, but
both of those were on the dirt. They move this horse 2 turf 3
for three lifetime. Stevie Asmussen, friend of the
show has moved this horse over. A rare combination with Ricardo
over and over and over again with a horse.
This is one of them seems to have found his footing here.
And now that I'm saying all these things out loud, Cogburn
might be better than fifth option in this race.
But I'm including the 1238 and seven in my tickets as we go
forward. The next race is the the Lady
Turf Sprint. It's great, 2,000,000 bucks, 6
1/2 for longs back in that gate. Up a little bit for Phillies and
Mayors 3 and up. This is a this is a Breeders'
Cup. But the turf Sprint last race
was the Breeders Cup. Winning in this is a grade 2
like I mentioned 1,000,000 bucks here.
Look the two horse here. I like Quarry a Comet for Palo
Lobo and Joe Talamo. Boy if the two of them have a
nice day boy we're going to make some money.
It's a 5 to 1 horse one last year back Kentucky Downs in a
maiden special weight left one at Turfway twice then one at
Churchill this past year in $100,000.
Optional claimer not made available in that one.
Then ran second to base storm in the Kentucky down preview day
and that Lady Sprint at Ellis Park and so interested to see if
she gets back to that form. She seems to be in every other
type. This is the every other one five
back three back two or excuse me 6 back four back two back.
We're running again here see if quarry a comment.
Can't pick this one off. At very worst I think she hits
the board 8 for 10 lifetime hitting the board for this
daughter of Shackleford after her landed on the 6th horse
which is based on it is the favorite here.
Beat quarry a comet last time out gets Flora Giroux here for
Jonathan Thomas. You know in a grade 3.
Recently finished back by one leg behind Poppy Flower Bubble
Rock ABCA. Very good field up there in the
Intercontinental at Belmont Park back in June.
Ran here at Churchill Downs in the unbridled.
In the unbridled Sydney, $300,000 listed stakes with
Johnny Velasquez in second right behind Caravelle.
No shame in losing to Caravelle. We've talked about that on the
show and so good to see her back in this kind of company.
I do think she's got a serious shot.
I wouldn't play her on top at 9:00 to 5:00.
I don't think that's a good price of Kentucky Downs, but I
do think she's the second best horse in this run.
Trained. Our team misses in here as well.
Nine runs already this year, Zach, how about that?
All right. And if four wins, 2 seconds and
2/3, that is a eight out of nine kind of horse, which I love as
1/2 of her starts on turf. We get another one here.
Ran third last year, excuse me, two years ago, I guess now at
Kentucky Downs in a three-year old race.
Didn't like it back then. Hoping she's changed a little
bit since then. Lots of opportunity.
She ran at Aquaduck, Gulfstream, Tampa, Keeneland, Pimlico,
Monmouth, Colonial, Saratoga. Simple math there.
They've run this course everywhere, and so I'm hoping
that experience of moving around has really benefited her.
That's out of the Breen barn with Kelly.
Breen Rodda Carlos gets them out again in that one, so we'll see
if she can't get it. Loop is, is, Yeah.
That means she's run one race every three weeks this whole
year. Yeah.
I mean, she's crushing. That's great.
Yeah. Old Trend, our team is.
And you can kind of see it too. It's not.
There aren't a lot of of workout times because they're using the
races as workouts. It's old school, man.
It's fun when you can get, when you can get Phillies and mayors
like that. And then the three horse here is
Waka Naka. It's a horse that if you
followed turf racing in this country at longer distances,
you'll know her name. They tried her in a Sprint last
time for the first time in the caress over a good go at
Saratoga, integrate 3 finish behind roses for Deborah by a
couple of lengths. I'm just wondering if she didn't
learn something last time going the shorter distance if she
won't figure it out here at Kentucky Downs.
And so in that one in the race 11 I landed 264 and 3:00 and
then in the nightcap which is race 12 another breed of cup
winning in mile and 1/2. So you actually do start before
the finish line to go all the way around there at Kentucky
Downs $1.7 million here for the grade 2 FanDuel Kentucky turf
cup 3 year olds and up open company here including one of my
favorite turf horses going in the US his name is red night
he's the two horse here. I have him second Zach under
Tyler and and for Mike Maker who usually has a great beat at
Kentucky downs a bunch of second places this year Red Knight beat
Goofo here. If people remember a couple of
was that last year was last year in September gave that horse out
that was a 12 to one shot. Loved him in that spot he's come
back since and won twice. One in the the McKnight at
Gulfstream going a mile and a half.
And then he came back and won the man of war.
The man of war. Excuse me at at Belmont Park on
a mile and three. Ace gets.
Tyler here ran well in the United Nations at mom that
didn't have that late kick that we're used to and he's one of
those horses he's got to make his trip right.
Well, the good thing about Kentucky down for a horse like
Red Knight is that you got tons of space and he's going to have
space to make his trip. So I do like him in the spot but
I landed on the 11 horse here on top.
His name is therapist and he is running as well as any grass
horse in the United States currently.
Mike Maker again trains this one.
Javier Castellano in the Irons flying in, won the United
Nations won that race that we were talking about ahead of
Catnip and Red Knight. If he runs this race, I think he
wins. I do think he's the best horse
here. So the 11 horse I do have on
top, so we're 11/2 so far. Then I landed on the three
horse, which is very stopping and this is a horse that I hate
and so I'm definitely putting him on my tickets because I
can't stand them. But it is Decky Cannon, it is
Brendan Walshell. I think those two could
absolutely be a problem and break up these tickets.
So if you leave the three out in the last race at Kentucky Downs
on Saturday, God bless you. But that's a terrible decision.
Can I ask you a question? So sure.
In the so a lot of people might not know this the current three
time. It looks like next week champion
in F1, his last name is for stopping, yes?
Correct. Yes.
And so you think that's where this comes from any any history
there you know that's a great question.
I don't know the answer that he's the son of war front.
Yeah. Pat so celeb is his dad is a
French bread I there is a his mom's dad.
I just, I don't know, I I don't think so, but it's a it's a fair
question. That's an interesting yeah it's
it's it's a coincidence for sure if it's a coincidence and the
other mic maker in here man is with her out of Corrales.
I love the two of them. Together they hit 30% at
Kentucky downs this horses won three straight a black type
state bread race in in Florida then moved up to Indiana won the
Schuster mile. Comes back wins at Ellis Park in
the preview day going a mile and a quarter.
Going to have to go a little bit further here but I'm not worried
about it given that this is a distorted humor.
Cozon Sire Dinoformer on the damn side this is a horse that's
going to be able to get the distance 6 year old son of of
Cozon by the way which is interesting and and really
starting to find his stride this year it's it's a mic maker
special for sure with this one so interested to see if the six
miss me and Mr. C be part of the equation in the last of Kentucky
Downs on Saturday. All right, man.
Well, I think. I think that's all I got for
today. We'll have Eric Camelback, as I
mentioned on the show tomorrow with Dan at 10:40.
If you're listening anywhere near the Louisville area, we're
on 680 and on 1057 FM, you can stream us anywhere in the world.
ESPN louisville.com. If you have a smart speaker,
just have it play ESPN Louisville, especially on
Fridays between 10 and noon. We talk a lot of horses.
And so if you're listening to this, you probably enjoy the
shows on Friday as well. Kevin Kilroy will join us in his
normal spot at 11:00 tomorrow. We'll talk Kentucky Downs with
him as well. Well, good luck this weekend to
everybody. Zach, you got anything going on?
I I do want to say if if you live in Kentucky and you're not
Louie, who I know probably has already placed a sports bet,
place one for me. Texas.
Texas is never going to legalize it.
Never so stupid, man. I love the freedom states that
don't have freedom. It's really.
Exactly. So there you go.
I do remember. I mean, I'll see her like one
last story. Here.
I win. It was the last day of the
legislative session. I gave out phone number and so
if a legislator was dumb enough to put a phone number on a
website, I gave it out on the show.
And I think we just flooded them to the point that they were
like, I don't want to deal with us anymore.
It's just great. So good job by everybody calling
and and pestering and doing the thing.
So good job out of everybody as well.
So I'm also hoping in the next couple weeks we'll be able to
make some announcements about Breeders' Cup and what we're
doing. Hoping to, you know, maybe meet
some fans while we're out there. If that's something you want to
do in the LA area, please let us know.
We're even tossing around the idea of hanging out with Los
Ponies the Saturday night After Breeders' Cup just to do the
double. Yeah, dude, I'm serious about it
too. I really want to do that.
And so if you want to go hang out in that quarter horses, we
could do that as well. I'm Lou Irbo.
He's producer. Zach, we're going to get out of
here on another edition of the Horse Racing Happy hour.
Good luck in Kentucky Downs this week.
It only takes one. I have good news, only takes one
to make your weekend at Kentucky Downs.
But if you can't hit a sequence man, even the, I mean, even the
pick three Zach are are consistently well over 200 to 1.
So if you can get one of those, you'll be good to go.
I want to thank producer Zach for hanging out.
I really want to thank Mike Andolfo for not being here.
All right, Zach, play some music.
Let's get out of here. Look for the other episode this
weekend.
