Full Transcript

All right, welcome in special Tuesday night, backyard,

addition, horse racing, happy hour.

He's Ron flatter horse racing Nation.

Ron flatter racing potty too many years coming up with that

name. I'm Louis Robo.

There's a reason for that. By the way, we'll have to get

into that in a second. I of course, am of the

horse-racing happy hour usually on Thursday, nights with Mike

and awful and Megan Divine, but I heard Ron was going to be

driving past my house to go visit, Eric Reid, and I said,

let me say one thing when he said I'm going to, I said, I'm

going to be driving past your house.

And you said, Thank you. It's so hot with the Derby

winner today. Mmm, a couple selfies with the

Derby winner. It's good stuff down in the

rebar device in Lexington. I did yeah.

Over at their operation there and all my goodness.

I Louis, this is the first time I have ventured north of I-64.

Welcome to horse country and it is all between fasig-tipton and

spendthrift and all my right just wanted on and on what a

gorgeous part of the country, and just one.

The most well-tended Farms the 50 acres.

Hmm. That Eric Reid has his operation

over there. I saw the Drone shot of that

place the other day and it looks incredible.

Yeah, it looks incredible. Yeah.

Horse country is its own thing, especially, you know, so if

you're listening and you haven't been and you get the opportunity

to take, even just a drive down there.

It's very much worth it. It's really sort of an

exceptionally is just even if you never get out of the car,

but it, and it was funny because I was telling you before we got

going Eric and he had a buddy there.

And we were there were doing a going about their business and

and you'll actually hear it on my podcast Friday.

So this is they go. I Shameless way of offering a

plug, they gotta fight man and we have a surprising amount of

crossover, believe it or not. We do people listen to the happy

hour notice the problem because it while the other thing I do is

there's an old there is an old game show.

Host back in the day named Bill Cullen, Bill Cullen, hosted

everything from the 40s to his death.

I think in the 80s, and he was hosting a show called I guess, I

guess iwai. Guess it was like my memory game

and and it was produced by Mark Goodson Bill Todman, who

produced. Also a lot of other shows her

Price is Right even to this day. But back in the day produced

password and his show was on opposite password and Mark

Goodson Bill. Todman were none too happy about

that. They were had two of their shows

on separate networks. At the same time.

She can have them spaced. Well, there's only three

networks that are there, right? Yeah, and and so they would say,

okay and by the way, the losers today will get a special home

edition of the I guess game. Okay, and he held up a password

box on purpose. Ah, and in that Spirit of

Ignoring the competition, but embracing the competition, if

you want calls competition, we often were colleagues where we

all kind of, you know, as as Pete for to tell says, from in

the money money. I see says if you raise all the

shit you yeah, there were tied, right.

Raises all the ships. I think firmly believe that I so

I think that's probably true. I think to I think sometimes

someone finds a podcast and they listen and they go.

Okay. Are there other ones and maybe

they find one they like better, do lose, what?

But I'd rather them listen and you have here about horse racing

than Absolutely, and and and, and I really do believe The Tide

Rises for everybody. And I will say that very often.

Somebody will tell me that they enjoyed their time on the

podcast. I said, well, if you wanted to

have a really good time, you should go on the horse racing

happen. I will do it or I will mention

Steve Beck or I'll mention Pete and Jonathan or what have you.

So, yeah, that's it. So anyway, I wandered off in

that into tangent land there. But I as I arrived Eric, he's

got someone who's doing. All his scheduling right him now

poor guy. Yeah.

Oh, yeah life is a little different.

It's not catchy or 15 minutes, right?

So he said, he'd forgotten. I was coming.

He goes. I was going to go ahead and go

get some lunch unless his so but I'll Stick Around do this.

I said, don't let me stop you from getting lunch and he goes

well, would you like to join us? And we were just going to get

some sandwiches at this little local store best and then and

then come back and we wound up going at this.

It was like walking into a slice of Araucana, where it's like,

here's the Kentucky Derby winner.

If you're thinking like, okay, he's going to be, he's got his

multimillion-dollar horses and his multimillion-dollar farm and

no K. Kind of does a little bit.

I mean, you can't, they aren't cheap, but you think he's going

to go into a multimillion-dollar restaurant to have multi-million

dollar meal. Nice.

Grab. We're grabbing sandwiches and

cokes and and morsel don't change man.

And the old dead end as he put it.

It was like seeing that it was like a little place.

You walk into and let it ride. I really was.

Yeah, and so we did that we went back to his A cursed and it is

workout tracking. What we enjoyed the.

We enjoyed the sandwiches and we had a little chat and when it'll

be on the podcast this Friday. So I was one of the coolest

things we've ever done. He says, you know, he'd known

her, I'd come from New York, but I said, yeah, but I used to go

to dive bars in New York University.

Also, this was like, yeah, this was fine.

It was totally fine. So it's good fun.

And we are drinking on my back porch, and I'm drinking it now.

I am amongst the million. Oh, man.

Alright, so just a real reset here.

Five minutes and I'm Louis Robo horse racing, happy hour, Ron

flatter horse racing Nation. If you're listening on anything

that isn't Spotify, this is available on video.

So don't go watch that because the two of us together makes for

poor video. Can I tell we did our podcast

for the first time on video? Good best we could.

Oh my God, people love it. People watch the love it.

People are watching this stuff. Oh, I know we gained many

thousands more people. Just by doing the video on

Spotify. We did it.

I was shocked too. We did on you.

Tell you, no, because no publicity nothing.

I didn't say a word about it and we had like, I don't know,

11,000 that we put the, you know, who just fell Stalin's

stumbled into it, but there's spiders or something, you know?

Yeah, there's something going on, you know, we recently,

picked up a sponsorship from greens.

She tracing the little tip sheets.

Oh sure. Yeah.

So very cool sponsorship. We love those guys.

Have been great to us. We're going to be doing some

stuff coming up, that will be announcing and they said, the

average demo on their website is under 30.

Wow, so they figured out how to do the digital thing with what

they have. And that's a that gives me hope

in this space, right? Where we're on the podcast.

We're doing the videos. We get pictures from from

listeners. They're throwing it on their

flat screens to watch our show like on Saturday mornings and

stuff board. If I'm on a large scale, is that

its own? Its own thing, now, right?

So it's almost as though, You know, Spotify, YouTube.

These are actual. You talked about the three

networks earlier. They're just networks now,

right? And that's how people get their

information and our Apple Google Spotify stitches.

I think so, you know, so cool. How are you listening?

Thanks for doing that. Thanks for hanging out with us

tonight. We wanted to do a quick sort of

Derby recap them Derby weekend recap because I always think of

this. As you know, we have the

Breeders Cup and we then we do the year in review.

This is the springboard into the summer, right?

Getting ready for the rest of the Triple Crown.

First, of course, then things like the a And you know, the

Saratoga meets the delmar's eventually so horses on the

undercard. I want to talk about some of

those. I'm really interested in who I

think. I hope you're going to lean hard

on you on those. I have a few but I wasn't.

That was, I was, I think if we talk about three or four, it's

totally fine. Because I thought there were

about, so, like we got to talk to her be first because that's

what people tuned in for. And I understand that you saw

the horse today, sounds like he's really good.

Right? Like he's first thing is really

big. That was the first thing I

noticed and Eric told me. 16 Hands to 16 amps.

Three. That's pretty good.

That's a, he's an Oxbow. Right?

No, he's a Keen Eye. He died.

Excuse me, right? He's a Keen Eye.

Yeah, which is interesting. Of course.

I mean, you start thinking of all the things I did a timeline

of all the things that lined up, how all the stars aligned

starting with among other things.

Sunny Leone coming from Venezuela to America, right?

Patrick, Eric Reid, having the barn fire and deciding after

all. Okay, I will stick with this

game that nearly a fire took. Out of five and a half years

ago. And I mentioned Keen ice around

the same time, beat American pharoah in the Travers, and that

made a name for him. And that may have isn't much as

anything. Been the biggest thing on his

sire resume. Oh, sure.

So, all of those things together and then you start to add these

things up. The 17 length, win in the thirty

thousand dollar claiming race against you.

Okay, dear, I guess just like tradition.

And he gets claimed by, you know, these guys who were in

Lexington, who seemed like a small-time operation and they

had modest but but modest goals at first, but also we're

reaching a little bit for the Stars.

They thought this might be a Belmont horse and they the key

race for me. And looking back on all this was

not was not the one at turf was a race of Turfway.

Not nothing, Jeff Ruby Stakes where he finished third and got

the 20 points, get the race. For that, the John Battaglia

where you got one, we got one point and forth here and forth.

But the Bob of ahead fourth. If not for that Bob of ahead.

He's got 20 points, fewer Stakes earnings and Rattle and Roll

gets first shot at getting in the derby ahead of him.

So, for the Bob of ahead in a race that just only recently

became a derby points prep. If not for Churchill, buying

Turfway. Maybe neither of those is a

derby Point, prep worth anything.

The Jeff Ruby's a minor points, prep absent.

All these things light up. It was like when John Daley won

the PGA and he was the sixth alternate and five other people

had to scratch out for him to get in.

It was almost the same feels like that.

Sort of a story. And and it was funny because

Eric said, all he knew on the day that it might be important

that point because they didn't know he even that was their

first derby point because they finished fifth in the gun in the

gun Runner. And so he did he realized

Especially looking back that, if not, for that point.

They're not in the derby. Amazing that Bob of ahead for

forth for fourth, in the John, Battaglia on a fake dirt trap,

not far from here and some senior Cincinnati which

translated well to Churchill. All three of those guys ran.

Well, isn't that something? It isn't simply the Battaglia

becomes the key prep for the Kentucky Derby.

It just kind of shows. I mean, you know, and we had

Rombauer win out west and then goes when the winds, the the

Preakness last year on a fake on a fan.

Out of Golden Gate. And we're just kind of seeing,

you know, it's just the right horse over on the right day over

the right surface. And you know, what is this?

Why I learned from this Derby horse racing, people are the

most miserable people on the planet because we get favorite

implement, we get favorites to win and everyone goes.

Oh chalk Fest, talk that it's so bad.

I can't even better horses. And then then he wins and Chris

felica. The the bear goes on Twitter and

says don't ever bet the Derby again because of one upset by

the way since 2005. We've had four horses. 50 to 1

or longer. It's right jacquimo.

Mine that bird country house. And now we have our new winner

restrict. That's right.

I'm sorry. That's that's like the last 17.

That's more than 20% If you do something anything in horse

racing at 20 percent or better, that's excellent.

Right? It's excellent.

So I don't I don't frankly at this point.

We have reached the point where it is worth it to bet the

longest shot in the field and you won't and you will make a

profit. I thought I was looking wise

one. Simplification I thought was

going to hit the board because I had I cover, he's a nice horse.

Well, I covered my my call was I said epicenter to win

simplification to hit the board. So I bread on a few others, play

throughs and into the box. I thought I'm gonna have to try

here. I'm going to try all except for

that horse on the rail. Well, I had it worse.

I thought it was. I thought it was the two that I

thought Rafa bejarano, who I've met a couple times, had one that

freakin dirty o on on Doug Source.

Yeah. And happy jack.

Yes, and I was like unlikely but it's still going to use one of

these things. It's Rafael.

He wins a lot of Churchill, you know, whatever.

When I saw the to though, and I saw the teal that was the

disabled cloth and I said, oh my first words Carolyn Greer from

horse racing Nation standing next to me up in up in the our

perch at the quarter pole. Yeah, and I said, oh my God, the

last horse in just won the Derby and then my next line was, oh my

God. Wayne Lukas.

Just won the Derby. Yeah, just not.

For himself, that's right. His profile.

His press conference after the Oaks, by the way.

It's an Alzheimer. Oh my god, when by the way Jim

Over, he'll shout out to that guy.

Did a perfect job moving that along so that we kept getting

responses from the right people, in the right way, the thing with

Wayne, the two things with Wayne second prize, for me, that night

was when he decided to fill a the morning line now, God bless,

Mike Battaglia, but man, that was that That was an all-time.

That was a comedy channel roast. It was, uh, it was all it was

absolutely, just for lazy, but the biggest moment for me and

the one who almost got me to cry.

And in fact, I was on my quill man's radio show and I actually

started to cry the other day. So if you happen to listen to

that about, forgive me for that. Was when Wayne comes off the

track, the rain had started after the race, the

presentations has gone on in the infield, but during the race,

the sun, it kind of peaked out and it was dry.

And then the rain starts, it's pretty steady.

The presentations are going on forever, 5 minutes, 10 minutes.

There's a few of us media waiting around and some are

growing impatient peeling away. Sure.

And then there's only a few of us and a couple of us and then

Wayne finally makes its way over.

We see the cream cowboy hat and I thought, okay.

I'm going to be stick around for this and Todd Pletcher comes

over and gives him a big hug and Ron Anderson comes.

Over and gives him a big hug and he's almost crying.

Right. And I want to try and squeeze in

a question. And Aaron.

Rodgers is the pr guy. Yeah, Churchill says no walk and

talks. So I thought it and I squeezed

in Wayne raining on your parade. He goes.

Yeah, I guess so that was it. Then at that moment with to

Kentucky state troopers flanking Wayne and Darren right there.

As I heard later Darren tried to get a golf cart for him.

Sure, as I got an 86 year old trainer.

Here. We need to get get some help you

but Wayne trooper that he is walking with the Kane looking.

I mean, honestly, when he's on his Pony, looks like he's 50

when he's in a news conference. He sounds like he's 30 but it it

when he's walking. He looks 105.

Yeah. Sure.

I mean, God bless him. Sure.

Got the chain. I mean, you know, oh God bless

Italy. I'm getting that way.

I'll probably beat him to the cane by 20 years.

I don't expect to make it to 86. Keepo.

God bless ya, but as he's walking through under the

grandstand from the tunnel near The Paddock to walk the two

hundred yards or so did get to the entrance of the media

center, the battle for entrance, the bunker.

The crowd just getting around him and shouting.

Well, we love you Wayne. God Bless you coach, you know.

Graduated to go, you know, and over and over again.

I thought I'm in the middle of something really cool here that

that walk. And I thought to myself, this is

the last time you this may be the last time he makes that walk

of Churchill. This may be the last time he

makes that walk at Churchill and I got to me I was I mean, I was

biting my lip hard not to be crying and I still I still moves

me even though point I and then the next day.

I went over to his barn asking about Preakness and you know,

still, I know, you haven't figured it out, you know, all

the above. None of the about data and I

say, Hey, listen, I just want to thank you for that moment, you

know, and just thank you and then I just suddenly stopped.

I just know. I'm just guessing.

Just thank you Wayne. Just thank you, any kind of let

it roll off from that. He's he's heard at thousands and

thousands thousands of times before but my God is I called

him Rushmore asked and I think I don't I don't think that's an

exaggeration. If you're going to build them

out. Rushmore trainers at Churchill

Downs. I mean, he's right there.

No, that's right. And it was cool.

He's George Washington. Katie McPeak.

One is 500 race at Churchill Downs that weekend, eagerly he

did. Which was very cool on the

undercard and then. Um, but I was thinking about

this, you don't be, we talked about coaching trees in

essentially every other sport, right?

And his coaching tree is as good as anyone in any sport.

North America. Frankly.

Now II can't speak to say Irish trainers or you know, UK or

French trainers or whatever. It might.

B-but to me his tree. Aha.

I mean, yeah, it's way up. Oh, my God, Pletcher, Dallas

Stewart up, help me out here. I'm gonna blank on these because

I mean, those are the two that always come to mind right away,

but he's got two or three others that are that, but that Cox came

out of Brad. Cox came out of the store bar.

So yes, so yes, please. So, he's right.

Grandson trust. Kind of a, that's what I'm

getting at. Right?

So it's, it's just the general, there's already a third

generation and wait, enumerated them.

And he Nate. And he said, I got eight.

I got 13. I mean, he knows he He knows the

numbers. Absolutely.

He knows that he's still sharp on those things like you

mentioned and so cool. Be if he gets a printout now, we

doesn't get too damn pretty much.

This would be good to bring a filly in against the long shot

winner in the derby. Right?

Where we heard this before. We're drinking a Kendall Jackson

owned by the folks at stuff street, right?

So, you know, Barbara Bank you, of course, the late Jack, since

our racial Rachel Alexandra, who barely beat mine.

That bird in that race and mine that bird.

Never got a whiff of a victory again.

The rest of his career. It's amazing.

Do you know why you're drinking KJ?

No, whose wine? That is.

Well, it's your well, it's just Jackson can't Jackson's chest.

You thinking about ways. That is the official wine of

John Sherpa. Oh, so here's the story.

I dinner with him twice this past week.

I did Once, by the way, no one gives show notes quite like

John. Sure, ho hahaha.

He's done to you too. As any ha.

Ha ha know what's funny he sits down.

He goes so Mike and Louis. I I'm outside and I just kind of

want to give you know, I just I have I have some thoughts and

Mike and I are absolutely Mike and I are obsessed with getting

better. We all know there's this is in

our shows, whatever it is, right?

And sorry if you're good, if you're good, if you want to be

busy straight, you do you good? And if you're going to be

introduced a good, you can't be complacent with your success.

He mentioned a couple of things and one of them was that I play

with my wedding ring too much and I was like, yeah, like twirl

around all the time. So, it's a trade secret.

Just like when I say, absolutely, I always say, there

you go. If you think you have a drinking

game with what I say, there you go.

Yeah. Oh, oh my God, you'll be bombed

by 20 minutes and my podcast do. And so he, but When it's like

two or three things and one of the things he said is you need

to have more guests and I said, what do you say about the house?

Yeah. I don't know that.

That's true. I don't know, but that's kind of

the point of having a three-person show, right?

Is that you ought to kind of always have a guest plus?

Well, yes. Yes and and gosh.

I was told early on by somebody whose opinion, I didn't

necessarily respect, but I thought the point was good.

Got it. I'll All you off are who would

was that you should have one guest on your podcast, just one

guest so that the seizure focus on that.

And I established that early on but I thought no I want to have

somebody like a horse person, jockey owner trainer.

What have you and and if you've ever had a what have you on your

podcast, you know, and I wanted to have somebody in the media.

My friends generally. And so, what I usually do is put

the media person on or the analyst person onto the

handicapper on split that interview with the horseman in

the middle. Yes, you know.

Hey, more with Louis coming up, but now here comes Eric Reid,

except that's never happened. So, keep going.

Yeah, dude, you had us on. I had you.

I just put this on that episode because you interviewed robbers

owners, right? Yeah.

Yeah, the one trying to Owen blanking on their name to

forgive me now, they were good interview to and they're very

nice people. They were and I was supposed to

have dinner with The New York and I ghosted them go.

Well, I didn't go. So we never had an appointment.

So that's not fair to me. Got it.

Hey, when we were in New York, that's let's have dinner.

And did ya have her happen? God, you know, let's duel.

No ghosting is like 75 graduation.

You're not shut up. Ya know, not like most of my

dates when I was single. Yeah.

So yeah. Oh my God, I'm gonna bail black

Jean and oh, and my phone is charging in the Next Room.

It's all right here, it's really, okay.

But anyways, so, I know you're, I know you're yelling it at me,

but that's alright. Yeah, Dono and so But but it was

just, it was fun to see, John John shirt by one of the things

about one of the things about those weekends.

And you know, this very well because you've been doing the

horse-racing media thing considerably longer than I have

is that and one day I'll get it, right.

It's those events. Even for someone like you who

does get to travel and go to stuff.

You still see people that you only see once or twice a year,

right? And that's really a beautiful.

Yeah, like get together people that do it horse racing is so

hyper Regional. The only get to see certain

people. What's what like, I have a

friend our would be sky. Does we do picks alongside each

other at a br. He's based in a, you're sure he

doesn't think. Okay.

Is that is Whalen really? Nice guy.

So he got a bunch of bump from Sunny Leone, of course because

they're both Venezuelan, right? It was what a great.

What a great. By the way, the Venezuelans in

horse racing. We have a job drinking role in

the show of King Guillermo gets brought up.

Everyone has a drink now and so you go.

Yeah. Cheers.

I started before you. Yeah, and we made a video about

it. Like, you know, a little 30

second snippet, listen to this. Show and we are all making

right? Can gear my jokes and it got to

Venezuela and the Venezuelans were like, you can't make fun of

him and I'm like that. We're not making fun of him.

Guillermo. I picked him before the Tampa

Bay Derby. That's my guy forever.

Whenever you pick the 52? One horse.

You love them forever. Come on.

What are we doing? Like, give me a knuckleballer.

Fifty two one. Let's go and and so but that's

how I met Darwin and I only see him either at the Derby or when

he's running a horse, you know in a maiden or something, but I

mean the Derby maybe the Breeders Cup will probably see

him in the fall that kind of thing, but it's great for those

sorts of Mike Tirico years ago. Drop a name, you'll need.

All right, you'll know. We tried we effort at him for

the Oaks live show that we had in terms.

Okay. Hey, I worked with him.

People said, BC, by the way, they're doing a lot more on Oaks

day, but I think America's kind of noticing that it's really

into a party and it didn't hurt the Wayne won it.

But so Mike. I've worked with him going back,

30 years. Sure.

So and I've had them on the Pod was and have tried other times

twice. So he had a great line.

And for me, when I was bitching, as I want to do, I'm not So Much

Anymore, you know, just to my boss, but I was bitching about

having to be at a Super Bowl one year.

Oh my and this was the, this was the week of the Broncos Packers,

Super Bowl of San Diego Super Bowl 38 and complain about going

to San Diego and February. It was January back then.

I mean Jane. You are.

Yeah, but yes, I do know. I was complaining about having

to be there for all the stuff that went along with it.

I'd rather have just been insane.

Diego and Torico looks at me and he says, you know, you got it

wrong. He goes, you got to look at it

this way and I have ever since he goes, there are certain

events during the year that you as you just described that they

become like reunions for sure. And there are only certain times

you can do it because those are the times where unlike say the

NBA finals or the World Series. You don't know where you're

going to be and not everyone, therefore will be there.

Yeah. Everybody knows where the Super

Bowl will be in advance. Everyone knows where the Final

four will be in advance. Everyone knows where the Masters

will be. Everyone knows where the

Kentucky Derby will be. And at those times you get to

reunite with the folks who are indeed your friends, your

colleagues and maybe the long-lost.

Folks. You see only those that once a

year twice a year. He throwing Breeders Cup, it

said, right? So, yep.

Well and I even, you know, I'm I've gotten lucky with the Show

recently in that. I've gotten to travel to Pimlico

most years. I don't get to go this week.

We have family stuff. We have no no, it's a great

reason that I can't go so I'll just share it because listeners

know this about me. My my third son.

Thomas is going is having his first communion that weekend.

So for us, that's a terrific, you know, life moment for him.

I want my family is all coming in.

But the day before one of my very best friends in the world

gets to live out his absolute dream and he's going to be

ordained a Catholic priest on that Saturday.

How about that? Oh, I gotta say Mazel Tov.

Ha ha ha, that's totally fine. But no, but my body Dustin and

so Saturday. All of us are going Dustin's,

get to get ordained. And then his second, Mass, ever

as a priest. He's coming to the first

communion for Thomas. It's very cool.

Very cool. So there you go pants.

So sticky. I will miss practices gladly for

those kinds of reasons to be with you.

There. You are.

So by the way tastic. I do have a question.

Yeah. I saw you were pointing

something there and I do. Okay.

So earlier. I thought you were showing me a

winning ticket and bring yeah, I love to play the late double at

at what is now horseshoe? Indianapolis the old Indiana

Grand because I feel very strongly about The quarter

horses, but not about the ones before.

So I stole this pic and singled it from Rachel and then I picked

my quarter horses that I like and I just got a lead in our

you're leaning on Rachel. Yes.

Oh, yeah, I'm gonna get but she listens, give her a shout out in

the thing. Rachel, and they sponsor the

show. Whatever.

Hey, what's up? It's gonna fit back in my days.

At that old Network, that I used to work at in Las Vegas, a van

Gogh. She's a, she's one of the good

ones, for sure. The but I'm a tribal Taos key

whose name, you know, for sure. Yeah, good guy listener.

To the both yours at our pod. Actually they go.

There's another Oh, so that's the one.

Okay, what are your predictions for Rich strikes?

Post Time odds in the Preakness. His guests somewhere between 4

and 6 to 10. No, I think I'll be longer.

I think I'll be longer. I think a real price hunger

strike. You think.

I think I think it's epicenter being there.

But Senator simplification epicenters probably going to go

about three maybe five to two but I think three if I don't

think xanthine is coming. I just got I don't get the

feeling Chad's, bring ease. And and if he did, I feel firmer

about I think it'd win. That type of horse wins the

Preakness. Know, if you'd say that type of

horse, whinnies the Preakness episode.

It's the same sort of horse. That is that rich strike?

As Rich strike is a closer. Okay?

Again, I think epicenter and early voting will be the only

speed in the race. I think early voting is going

to, I think early voting will be shorter priced van.

I think that's probably right. Then Rich strike cut, and will

simplification be shorter than Rich strike.

I don't know about that. So we're probably looking at

between why? No, there's I would say seven or

eight. If you can get 10 to 1 on

simplification in the Preakness. Oh, I'd be all over that.

Whoa, because that's what you're essentially, what my old man.

Now, the only problem I have is that, you know, it's the back in

two weeks thing. Yeah, of course, you never know.

And the other thing you have snow done that much.

I can't even think. Well remember he did well, the

Fountain of Youth cup and then they basically conceded the

Florida Derby because he told me that before the race, he told me

that before the race, I said this to I told the story by

saying. Well, okay, so, Santa told me

they were going to try and run it Forward.

Get dirt in his face, get him used to the traffic.

And then if there was horse left to go and if not just just

handwriting and that's exactly what he did.

And then and I said, oh and oh, by the way, he told me that

before the race and he did, so went according to plan.

And the part of that was they already had the 50 points from

the Fountain of yes, so where he ran brilliantly, frankly.

He absolutely did. So and it goes back to the okay.

Was there much competition in Florida?

This winter? All right.

That's fair point. I picked white about it before

the before the wa you and Andy buyer.

Will they go? I really that's my line there.

You guys, I trust I just has a couple humblebrag there.

So if you listen to make sure you drink but I, um, I I just I

trust, I'm very lots of people have different things.

They used a handicap. I use predictor races.

Hmm. In my handicap a lot frankly and

so, Santa Anita Derby, recently, the Florida Derby historically,

I don't trust the Louisiana track was almost right?

I definitely can attract gave you for the top five last year.

Gave you the winter. I know, right?

So, we'll came out of there. That's starting to change a bit.

Now. Do you go start to change it?

So, you know, and of course, historical Trends are things

that change over time and to sit, by the way, epicenter and

the race one to find her. And I went another one coming

out of Fairgrounds. I think, the big thing there is

and I made it. I wrote a column about this.

That had epicenter one and you could even argue.

All right, if you want to cross out Rich strike and then say

epicenter one all, you know, it's like saying well, yeah, but

it in nine times out of ten he would have maybe.

All right. Do other races now the 100-point

races? Do they start to look at that

and go? Maybe we should be a mile in

3/16. Okay, we talked about that on

our show and maybe I stole it from you, the possibly.

So, we did you listen to our derby draft that we did?

I should have. Okay, so we did a derby draft,

and then I watched three other shows, do a derby draft right

after that. I'm watching you.

People. I know you're fucked.

You're just copying as I get it. And so, we did Rod is very

disappointed that this show that he didn't listen to God.

Copied. So face into a simian like very

angry. So the mega took epicenter first

overall. Okay, and I the only common I

added to her comments, was he went a mile in 3/16 in Louisiana

Derby and it didn't bother him at all.

Right, like that's it and when they listen the form, by the way

experience that the distance, they lumped together a mile and

a quarter of a mile 316. Yeah, and I don't love it.

But but it's fun. It's a good point, right?

And so things like, you know when they do the prep it all.

Lawn for the Pimlico special, for example, right?

Those sorts of things. I think that's why they do it

because there's some transference between those

races. I hate it less than you do

apparently. But I, I understand why it would

be less attractive because they don't do it, for example, for a

mile and 16th and Mile, and an eighth, right?

I mean what's or, which is why is it, would they do it for a

mile and an eighth in the my own 3/16, right?

I know where does the line? Where does one right?

Where? Where we?

Yeah, where's the gray area here?

And so I am I'm with you, I I think for the lines I'm with

you. I think that epicenter will be

favored. I think that early voting is

going to get the Chad Brown bump but I don't.

What about the simplification if you're right.

What about Kenny's allowance in Europe?

Kenny's allowance winner creative Minister.

Yeah, he's gonna get a bunch of money to let's get.

He's getting a lot of money in Europe.

That means if you're not a part of me, not in Europe, but it

Bovada. Yeah. 6 to 17 one problem, which

is, I think a terrible underlay, but Everyone likes that new

shooter. I'll tell you what's really but

new Shooters seldom win. I agree with you.

I agree. I mean, II know you can find the

exception? Reese.

Yeah, but, but generally cloud computing and like my love cloud

computing that, yeah. I can't remember.

That was a solid like 12:48 kind of number, right?

It's just that it's a Giant's Causeway was just one of their

race, right? I mean, it just wasn't my night

and we can talk about jockeys, well, to do that.

But anyways, the um, I Okay, so I want to talk about the

Preakness because around here people, poo poo Pimlico.

I'm sorry, how many champions have come out of the Preakness

versus how many champions of come out of the Derby?

It's not even. So it's the it's the well I've

said this before, are you a modern family Watcher?

Okay. It is I always make this

distinction. It's a show that if it's on, I

leave it on but it's not one that I've watched front of me.

Not, you're not really understand.

You're not rolling on it, but I understand that.

I understand the concept. Okay, so, you know, the Dunphy

kids. Yeah.

All right. So Haley, the Airhead pretty

airhead. Glamorous here head.

It's the Derby. It's the Derby, right?

Luke Luke. The precocious one.

You don't know what you're gonna get, half the time, you know, he

could come up with something inventive or he could, you know,

I drop a coconut on his head. That's the Belmont, the middle

one, the middle one, Alex. The smart one.

Nice is the Preakness. I used to do this with Marsha

Jan and Cindy with the brakes, but it was too old now.

So I that's a musty reference that's outdated kitchen now and

now modern family's been off. It's a little musty nothing.

Right? The New Black.

I don't know. Anything from, you know, Ted

lasso, but I just but that's I think there's it's easy to

Poopoo Pimlico because Pimlico is a dump.

But I think Buster the racing medial of covering that raced

motocross race all year. Easiest way to have easi because

you don't have to state. Boards are all there, you fall

out of the Press Box, here in the stakes, brightest thing and

and the people at Pimlico for some reason, are the friendliest

freaking people in horse racing, the women, the women.

Sorry, the web and in the Press Box.

No, I find that. Generally true and but I

recently, of course, they've had to ship people in from Florida

different things because they moved offices and all those

kinds of things. But there is something about

being able to just walk on the roof there.

Oh, yeah. No, no.

And that, that viewing area from in front of that Press Box is as

good as there is against him by, we know, other than say, Delmar,

Indiana that can't really is and you don't get that at the Derby.

I usually get it at Belmont, but you're just such a big place,

you know, and I find certain people at the Derby are very

friendly. Yeah, certain way there.

I mean Everybody wants to go only Churchill's this corporate

monolith in everybody wants to write a crap on it and all that

and I get it. I get it.

Not the communications people though.

The old couldn't us know, I could heaven and Aaron in my

face. Kevin you went to talk to a

horse player. Oh, he's been on the show.

Not even a thing. Like, you know, I couldn't have

them on the show for the longest time.

Just copy. This is stuff.

We were sponsored for a long time.

My first bed right now, we're not and now I can have him on

dude. That guy honestly killed give

you singles and see. It says that you've never

thought about and he's like, 44 on our show or something.

There's something ridiculous. Not very good.

He's very good guys. Also, I good guy.

Good guy. Life is great.

The old baby little baby was around the track this week.

She's around wife's pregnant again, doing that thing.

Doing a little not that's a little thing.

They just have it as Kevin doesn't help.

That's the social media thing, right?

Come on. No, he's like, oh no.

That editor from horse racing Nations going to want wit 12

credential or something. All right, so a little reset. 34

minutes in lawyer about horse racing, happy arm next to Ron.

Flatter horse racing Nation, the Ron flatter racing podcast.

What are we smoking? These are single barrel cigars

and oh - I gave you a, you grab the little light.

I want a little later. I haven't had a cigar in a

while. It is a, oh my gosh, a Gurkha.

So yeah, it's very smooth it, right?

If I had gone, if I, they had a cigar more recently, undergone

something spicier, but for a first one, I've had.

But this is our spot after all. It's this is a right.

Nice smooth. Entry point to get back into

cigars. It's good for summer.

Terrific or late spring. Oh, no, summer summer.

I'm more. Thin spicy and may not last as

long because I might not. Obviously there you go.

That's the thing. Bronzer rods hanging out at my

house tonight. Is that says that horse racing

money? Is this is, did you hit like a

dog? This isn't build this place.

This is do. This is this is insurance money.

Oh, the insurance industry. Is resettlement, correct?

Yeah, it's not that I've ever ever been.

No, I'm having issues with insurance.

I may need to talk. I'm here.

Yes. You or your wife?

Amy? Okay.

Don't worry about it. I just checking.

All right, let's but I'm married to a physician.

That's not bad either. Yes.

She's gonna fix my eyes. That's crap.

At least for follow-ups, honestly.

Anyways, okay, so we're here tonight.

I appreciate Rod coming over. So, let's talk about some of the

other horses that were on the undercard.

So I'll bring them up. You will remember them.

So, in the eight Bells, which is the one turn three-year-old,

Phillies race, Mata Raya showed up Madhuri.

And I, and so, I said on our live broadcast, and I hope

people were able to listen over at ESPN Louisville.

We did two hours on of say, three hours on Derby Day.

Really good. Fun shows, if you vote for the

eclipse Awards, I'd appreciate a nomination for the Derby show,

but the Monterey area, I said at that.

So, impressive and seven, furlongs.

That's an acorn horse to me. And you get that weird overlap.

In the season, where those Oaks horses, go to the acorn, but you

also have horses that are seven for a long Specialists that can

at least try the bike, right? That's the same thing as sort of

like the female meant mile for three years.

That's exactly. That's because you're either

stretchy at the or you have to retreat.

And that's an interesting point, Monterey.

I was not on my radar as much then as she is now it was sold.

Not if I would not have pegged her for a horse that I was going

to look at beyond that day. And then she did what she did

that day. That's right.

And so secret opens. Therefore exactly.

And honestly, oh, yeah, no secret.

You could also get a chase the bunch of money.

Secret. Oaths going to go, add.

I don't know that. She's going to go the same

direction. Now, do they both wind up in the

distaff? Maria.

No. Moderate is a 1 turn horse.

So Filly and mare Sprint. Yeah.

Okay. Yeah, and I think she'll be a

absolute Contender by that time of year.

Okay, so she's not going to sweat it out.

This is this is the thing that so the the Phillies season for

three-year-olds is as weird as the most as in as the naira way

of qualifying. So they do the butcher, the fall

that's returns and then they go back to one turn and go back to

window. Yeah, its like the and then they

go to two terms again. The got them the withers the

Jerome's like which way you going to do make up your mind.

Yeah, right. And so they kind of go back and

forth. Same thing with the Silly Season

in that, they only run the mile in the acorn over the one

turning Belmont. I had to remind people that

Belmonts. The only place I know where you

can go Mile in an in the u.s. Violin an eighth with one turn.

Like they did the Derby that or the Belmonts.

He's Mia. Come on.

Let's the 2020s. Yep.

And so but it's to me, it's sets her up to be a player in that

race. If they think that they can

stretch her out that extra for a long, which I absolutely hate

running style. If you can get out front and

stay out front, is always attractive in those.

He's of races where they're going to have some mini quartz

what, 12 horses, at least generally because it's so much

money and it's on that big day. And that's, that's a mayor

making race, right? That is it.

It's, you know, I'd forgotten about the one turning angle on

that. I'd completely forgotten that.

And and if that's the only little pressure right now,

aren't you? Well, yeah, it is.

And then what's it? What's crazy about raeandadam at

Monterey and now me, that makes her the horse to beat their.

I kind of agree with you. And what's interesting is know.

I kind of agree with you on that link and then they go, but then

they go back to Saratoga. They run the, Alabama.

The classic distance is the T. Right.

It's such a bizarre thing that we do these Phillies and I just,

you know, so they don't all have to show up for although I

understand I understand. But that's those are the races,

right? It's it is the Oaks.

It is the corn and it is the Alabama, right?

The coach of Club folks to obviously but I that is the

Coaching Club American Milan animate.

Yeah. Yeah, but that I understand you

want to go to turns you on. Do the mile in the knife.

That's legitimate. No, are they going to do?

Because they have they've re-established.

That shoot into the clubhouse turn at Saratoga.

Yes. Is that where they're going to

start? No, that would be a mile in

length. It's a mild.

We're just putting them. I'll shoot.

I like that. I think that's.

Yeah. It's kind of it's an Ellis Park

thing. Churchill Park.

Well, yeah, but Churchill's not, but, but Ellis's, and neck is a

half, an extra. Turn.

Churchill does not have an Exposé Belmont doing it on the

top of the stretch there. No, no, at the know.

It's are the top of the top of the turn there at the top of

the, unless, you know, something.

I thought they were re-established know this.

That was an old shoot that they had their many men.

Yes decades ago, right? And they're re-establishing it.

Okay. Between the two new buildings.

They built. Yeah, her, which is pretty cool.

I mean, I know they're doing. It's like, okay.

Hey, guess what? You got it, you know, while

you're drinking your cocktail, you can see the start of a race

right below you. That's kind of what they're

doing. There.

Sounds great. It does.

Yeah. It does absolutely does.

Yeah. No.

So somebody way I'm II didn't know, whether they were going to

do your good but moderate Ami a player.

Absolutely. And like you said, oh, yeah, no

moon shot. Yeah, because that's so on.

And that a Warren is one of the great races every year because

you do get that crossover of those really good Oaks Phillies,

those really good sprinters. Is it gonna mean that just

wouldn't know who was it? No, the part was a baffert

though. Who was it?

No, it wasn't wasn't who am I thinking, of two years ago?

And that was her satirist, three years ago.

You'll know yellows text us. I'm getting texts because my

soccer teams playing right now 2019.

Oh, is it? You know, Manchester United?

No. No II, ra pool.

And I wouldn't play at this hour the day new city.

Oh that. Oh, yeah, that level Jonathan

winter. Hello.

Yeah. Well, they go.

Yeah, that's my God. Hey cord Stakes for the

uninitiated Jonathan. Lee the former editor of horse

racing Nation. My Runner was her.

This is now the guarana. Yep.

It's now the maybe relations expert with Louisville sit down

and I were on a texting relations because I filled in

for Bob Valvano for a few weeks. And so I was interviewing the

captain of racing Louisville are nwsl teenager.

So anyways, and you're telling me you're telling the moderator

could be guadarrama. This year's what I'm saying?

Yes. Yes.

Yes. That's that's that's actually

really good parallel. And so I think that's where You

get that overlap. These races are really worth

watching. I mentioned that springboard

earlier in that you get those horses, those fillies, those

young Colts, whatever, who are getting ready for the next

stage, right? And if they're good at seven,

furlongs, Churchill Downs, a mile over that Belmont, course,

shouldn't be too much, appreciate one turn, right?

And that's the thing is the one turn-to-turn thing because look

at, I mean, and I'm sure you're going to bring up Jackie's

Warrior for what he did this last week.

And again, he is that he is good, at one turn.

Is you're going to get? And he's bad at two turns, as

you're going to get. It's a All to every time I watch

him race, the fractions early. I always go.

He can't keep it up. He does he does it and he does

it's remarkable friends Jesus machine.

Yeah. He you know it Doug O'Neill

explain to me many eons ago the whole thing with one turn to

turns is that horses think that certain horses think they're

done with their job when they've done one turn, right?

And you have to train them into knowing that the second turn is

now their job because they're going to graduate.

They don't, yes, few horses started to turns some, Um do but

by and large probably what 70% who then graduated to turn

started at one turn? At least 70 I would certainly

under. Yeah, right.

And and so that's something that is difficult, more difficult to

train because he feels like that's something you train into

them. And I thought, okay, I get that.

Now, I get that now. I've, I've also had some people

tell me that, that's a bunch of crap.

Okay, but, you know, I mean, no, but of Traders didn't disagree

on the V2 time. Derby.

Winner tells me that I'm gonna listen.

But if they also, I mean, if trainers don't disagree on some

parts of game that it, Social cheese in that.

The be a pretty freaking boring sport, but the yeah.

So that Jackie's were certainly one of those horses.

Another horse that I think kind of mate, staked his claim to

being one of the best older horses was Olympiad in the alley

Sheba. Oh, yeah, and so now we're

dealing with right. So we already know the distaff

class is freaking awesome. There's no worries about that.

Oh, yeah, and another one. It's so before we get to hit a

lot of the same names that we've enjoyed so.

So yes, it's as good as it's been frankly since like the Abel

Tasman, you know, sort of group and all those sorts of folks,

but let's go to that one first. Let's go to the distaff class.

Pauline's Pearl wins volumes Pearl impress, the hell out of

me, and I was happy to see that. By the way, that broke a big

schneid for asthma said he was over.

I'm 42 43 over the place. So in Kentucky, and he finally,

yeah, one that broke the schneid.

I was happy to see that butts on that.

That horse the other part of it is Many of the distaff horse of

that class prefer to be a front and she runs a different style.

And so I mentioned on the show over the weekend.

There's something about that style.

Where Latricia likes to be up front.

She, there's a devil prefers to be upfront, those sorts of

things. To me.

It sets up Pauline's Pearl as a possible outlier in those things

where she could pick up the pieces because that's what

happened this year. Marshall ran one.

The distaff do know. Yeah, March 11.

The distaff because it fell apart at the front.

It did. But it also I think.

How many horses got sucked into that pace at the front in that

race? And I think that was part of it.

I don't know when to be a friend is the best of that isn't all,

but I don't know that. You'd they do it again.

I think, I don't know. Some of the fairgrounds route to

the derby was really good because of all these recent

winners. Yeah, but I'm saying this, but

I'm talking about what yet you three year olds were talking

older horses. Now, you figure, you're done

setting and the trainer's learned, something about that

and jockeys you would hopefully learn something about them.

You would hope memo to Hall of Famers.

So, What did Lucas say about the Derby?

There's five, professional jockeys and Five Guys.

That should be bagging groceries.

Ha ha he was on fire dude. He was on freakin fire on

exciting race. I almost just run that on my

podcast. You just play that about just

open with the Hat Man. Jim Over Hill shining just the

coach just do things in mulvihill was in The Shining.

No. No, he was shining.

He was Jimmy. Oh, no, I'm sorry.

He was something different. He was Jim's.

So good at those. He's so calm but he's super

wild. Relax curl the fly in the

ointment. Yeah, may I as a member of the

media at a point, the media would like to ask some

questions? Okay.

I understand. And I've had this chat with him

before. Okay, but you're right, either

ha ha ha. What we want?

Is it always the best for the tip of the press conference?

I get it. The um, can we do is complain?

Yeah, so but he does a good job with those but I know.

But to back to your point though.

I mean, look, true Scott. Now the funny thing about yours.

All that, like you've ever seen the devil in on she there's a

devil made me a lot of money illegally in Las Vegas on for

with the jokes. Yeah, sure.

It is a terrific class. The fact that they're sticking

around. The thing that we talked about

on the show, by the way, fall in love with the Phillies, because

they run as mayor's. They, that's right.

Because rawness mayor, not having to you get six year olds

that are around like a dozen. One ran this past weekend really

well zero value. In 38 years old your value a

difference? Not engage.

It's different. It's not Lucrative prolific as

it is the form of because we've had five years of bells one

running. That's awesome.

I mean that's a half decade of a horse there.

Once was a mare named does the one that only once, right?

But those horses still be back in 8 and everybody kind of knows

it becomes a chess game more. When you have the same horses

coming back, you'll start to see those same faces.

And and so it's going to be a Keeneland.

Now, let's not forget that because that and what's the

distance? A mile and an eighth.

So that the distaff? Yes.

Yeah, but this test will be the second Finish Line, so okay, but

it be Pretty quick, run to the first turn.

So I think so. That's a little truth that she,

there's a devil, but the funny thing with Latrice, get every

time, I know everybody's going to say, this is the one, this is

where she's going to unwrap this.

As you know, every time there's a prediction that this is it,

she can't possibly be this good, right?

She does a good horse. She's in there.

She's humble and Foster Gutierrez, and I love him to

death. He's a good trainer.

You know what? You may not want to say, you may

not be as prolific, but he is a good painter, the smaller barn.

But I mean No, he knows what he's doing for sure.

What was the John scheinman? In Baltimore Arena?

See him, double Eclipse award-winning writer in

Baltimore, and he I am. Once I asked him, I go.

How many horses does it take to make a good class.

Hmm, and that we were talking about three year olds.

He says, one ha ha the 2015 class was Sarah the 2018 class

adjust if I will forever be good because they had pharaoh and

justify. I see his point.

So you start to look at the class with and that's That's a

good anecdote man. That's good.

And it's all want to like that. But that's right.

Yes, it's you know, the more you please off part.

Yeah. I know.

Have you had them on? No.

Well, that's what you don't have guests.

I've had Dave Rodman on because he's the Howard Stern of horses.

Tell you too, that guys, you know, I always call him.

I don't know how it started, but I just did the lovely and

talented Dave Robin. So whenever I say, lovely and

talented, it only can apply to Dave rotten.

Now, you should have him on. I've had it won.

Ask him about his days in Louisiana, and then get the hell

out of the way. Hmm, because he'll tell you

about. Bar stools that fell over on

their own and these kinds of stories and you're like, oh Dave

Rodman. Oh, oh Dave Rodman.

And like it's so we literally he was on one week.

Mike was a was out of town. It was.

It was Megan of me and it was Marilyn million actually this

last year. We had Davon and and I said, so

art Megan went to the same high school as Howard Stern.

Are you the Howard Stern Show in.

Astoria, Queens? Not in.

Astoria, Queens. What was its inquiry?

Kitchen? It's a Long Island.

Nassau County. Yeah.

And so as I said, are you the Howitzer and his response was a

roundabout way of saying? Yeah, that's great.

I actually think it if people haven't heard it.

They've heard me say it on his show a lot if you're checking

him because we're on flat is here.

Horse racing Nation Ron flatter racing pod.

I think is called the Preakness when Swiss skydiver.

One is one of the great, you know, he's he's he's he's big,

he's an underrated for sure. And he's on that Maryland,

circuit. And so, people either hear him

or choose not to hear him or whatever.

It might be every year with the Preakness.

I always encourage people go back.

Listen to the Dave Rodman call. It actually, this is one of

those years go. Listen to the Travis phone call

and listen to the lyric almost call of the Derby because both

of them actually had similar responses.

Travis spotted Rich, strike a little bit earlier.

Yeah. Um, What made the comment?

Sorry Larry, I'm not trying to pick on him because he does a

good job. Didn't they get rid of Dirk?

And because he only the announced the winner hundred

yards from the finish line. And I was like, oh nothing that

I wish you hadn't said that crossed my mind.

Really? I tell you what happened on the

dirt? Can call.

I got to tell you a funny story. Yeah, go, please.

Yes. We're here.

Of course. Okay, we're now explicit.

Drink. All right.

I'm doing Paddock reporting with Bob.

Valvano on that Derby for ESPN. Radio ESPN Radio had the Rob

used to work in the pack. He and I worked three or four

together. No kidding.

That's not everything. That's what did I got?

My claim to fame. And again, get your broom ready?

You're sweeping up leaves and names.

I introduced him to Bo Derek to I did because I you made Bob's

life. I met.

I had not as you're not as date life.

I'd met her at the arc theater before and she remembered and I

said, well, would you mind doing an interview?

And she's not at all. And I thought the better

celebrity interview between the two of us the bottom.

I was happily seated that I get all the way.

Yeah, and get out of the way. Do the same thing.

Hon, baguette. Don't worry about it.

So after so after we're all, we're all standing ringside on

the outer rail to getting ready to pounce on people.

Mine that bird comes up the rail and mine that bird, only me.

We're taking Durkins call. We paid him as well as NBC to

our call. And Durkin calls it late,

forgive me, Tom, but in my talk back to my producer, I said

something where I thought, oh, I hope after I said it, I hope my

mic was long. I said, did he fucking miss

that, white snow? And, and I thought at that

moment as oh, I hope my mic wasn't left on.

So I would not gain set career, right?

And and now, here I am now no shot.

But look, it's tough because you're predisposed to it.

You see epicenters. And and that's the race.

That's and it's, by the way, by the way, it's also many of us

who are watching on TV or in the stands spot, the same thing same

thing. So I'll give and I love Larry

because Larry is a guy. Can I can stand with it?

Kentucky Downs? I'll go Larry.

Yeah. Can you work the phrase biscuit

eater into Heidi, does it and he does he does.

That's right. No, that's right.

No, I totally believe it was a tough spot and I got it's just

it we had a Thing. Mark Midland, my boss and I had

horse racing Nation. We argue.

We argue all the The time honestly, we have that I Mark,

we have that relationship. So he wants to do a thing where

the public can vote on announcers and we have an

announcer pole and all that and I said, I want to that reason.

Someone did that recently on Twitter and tracks one.

Well, I don't want to do that because people because what it

ends up being if you've ever seen our comments section, is

that it turns into a trash Fest for the PPL?

The I don't want to do that. Yeah, as parochial so I don't

know that there's anything to gain from That's all God thinks

that he thinks people would participate.

And so as a gain for us I get it.

I get that part of it. I just don't salty.

I'll do I'll be unpopular right now.

I think Kurt. Becker Keeneland is not

interesting. Like I'm the one everyone like

skirt back. I do like Kurt right.

There you go. Everyone likes is fine like her,

but I love Jimmy. It Turfway and at Ellis Jimmy.

Last name, damn it. It's just let me know.

But Jimmy, I looked and they turn for the money.

Look I love that kind of like that.

Like it's just his but this is exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm not always raising him and I'm right, but why should my a

matter? That's what I also, by the way,

love people. Sorry should love them.

That's it, a boy or downs and there at that.

I said I buy a hamster, gravelly voice, call you Pops around, it,

tracks around the country. He goes, mmm, they're off and

he's got a leak channels, his inner Harry Henson and, and he's

like, he and he is, I love this stuff.

No, but I love that stuff. And I know I'm in the massive

minority like Rebecca, for example, it's not that he's a

bad race, caller. It just doesn't, it doesn't do

something for me. And that's where so like, I love

Matt dinner man, out of Golden Gate.

He's very good. He is have the pipes but oh,

that's right. That content contents all their,

you know, exactly. What's going on tapes anymore?

Honest. I think that's part of it and we

all accept that there's a level of nerve.

To being a race caller, right? Unless you're like a pil.

Oh, who's not a nerd. So you think Sheldon, Cooper

would have been sure. I don't know.

But like so, like, Matt, I'm Matt's actually the, the guests

we've had most on the show. How about that?

We're a louisville-based podcast, the guy who calls races

in Albany, California, natives funny thing.

I grew up in Northern California.

Okay, never been to Golden Gate Fields.

Yeah, so I haven't had a finally and it took me in my bed every

day. They're open.

I love it. I really honestly like if my

fifth day about 50 year of my podcast.

Yes, I finally did a Golden Gate Fields, focused.

I have math, did I have mad on her at a train?

Whoever I have lost track and, and so matz matz great resource.

That's great, because he's because he's never has a bad

day. He's also know he's very, you

know, he's, you know, he's always in a good mood and he

will, he will. And when he does his, his, his,

his pre-race analysis, he'll talk, he does a great job 80% of

it, as is accessible to everyone.

And then there's a 20% for guys like me.

Who know what all the terms are and know what, you know what,

the the BET type is, and those kinds of things, right?

So he's able to 80% of what he says and I don't know.

I'm sure you're like me if you turn on something on television

and there's an expert on and it's a topic, you know, nothing

about but they talk to you and you hear it and then they talk

over your head just a little bit but they come back.

You're like I can watch this. Yeah, you know, who's that way?

And I can if I'm me again get your room ready?

Yeah. Dinner with him last week, Steve

kornacki. Okay, especially in politics,

right? And I'm a political nerd.

He's a political nerd. No, but it's good.

There's a horse racing nerd. He's been he's been riding

horses. That's the five.

That's the thing and he doesn't and he can talk to you without

talking down to you. So the thing that we talked

about is the Allure of drawing in a celebrity to call a race or

do something like that. Well, and that no one of your

Conan O'Brien called race, that's exactly.

Right. And so but what I'm saying is

Steve's not like that if he's not a horse racing guy, but he's

he is a horse racing guy. He's very much.

Horse racing. There you go, right?

So he's not like you. If he had to make a living, he

could do it. I agree with you.

That's my point. Is that if you can get those

guys. So look, I sell insurance.

I'm a dude, right. But I can do it.

I can do a horse racing podcast. I could never sell insurance.

No other skills, except kind of just so yapping.

They about all those that's what insurance sales is.

Just okay. This is its own thing, but the

yes, But no, but you know, I think, you know, and like I

think Michael Roan is the best race color North America.

Yeah, and he does. And by the way, you can tell all

of his researches in there. He could talk about the 300

yard, you know, quarter horse in the same way.

He talks about the low cell Derby and like is impossible.

I don't know how they do it. I don't either, but you know

who's taken to it? Really?

Well? John duel.

He's doing a really good job and Horseshoe in Indianapolis, like

a John's job, but it's just a good race color right on in.

John's, just the best. And then John is the guy, you

know, I mean, he's the most delightful John because I am too

and I've and I've that's the horse collar.

That's the good modern horse collar.

He had here a little bit. You know, you know, I first met

John Dooley wasn't wasn't on this continent.

Hmm. We were getting off a train in

Paris at the at the at the Port. My oh yeah before the Arctic sea

of Stars One. Which is what 2009 whenever it

was. So I lived in Paris in 98.

Did you really for a summer as a 17 year old?

Okay? Humble brag coming.

I'm just okay. So my brother died. 81 my

brother died. That year.

No, no, hang on. Hang on.

And I want to, and I want to paint a picture here because it

was really remarkable. So, my parents the house was was

a mess understandably, right? So, my brother had leukemia, it

didn't work out which around Usman.

May I So I lived on the Southeast side 16.

Oh, you're right near the yeah, right near the body below.

Thank you right next to the zoo. All those sorts of things.

Right? I lived in.

I lived on who's Too Deep a heme, the whole thing.

Did you eat it? No, Vinnie's.

So the good thing, the good thing was so I was 17.

My French was okay, but not great.

And the the parents of our previous.

Oh my gosh. We were the host parents for a

French kid who came in. Hung out lived with us for a

couple months here. What are they called?

Yeah. We're my God.

Strange to thank you in exchange, you for two months.

Emanuel. And my parents were like, hey,

um, could you take Louie for, like, six weeks and they own an

apartment building on the Southeast side of Paris.

I had my old apartment in Paris as a 17 year old.

I showered in my kitchen. My bed was a Murphy bed in the

living room. And those are the two rooms.

That was it. Right?

Was it maybe three hours? All you needed was perfect for

to be out all the time and never there.

Got a job washing dishes at the Hungarian restaurant on the

first floor. And this is at her and I

discovered and you'll appreciate this that you could get into

anything that was publicly funded for free and not wait in

line if you were under 18, and I was 17.

So I've spent over 50 hours in the Louvre, over 30 hours in the

Centre pompidou. I've been to everything

everything. I just as a seventeen-year-old.

I don't know. How was the musee de pury or

know the musee D'Orsay? Yes, they do or say for sure.

But all of the, all of the, all the cathedral's, all those

things of Catholic. I so that was really fun for me.

So you've been to a worship. You've been to a mass at Notre

Dame I did before the fire. Yeah, fire, right?

I have to. Yeah, it was great.

And so I was but I figured that out pretty early on because some

nice lady at the, at the at the Louvre was like, you don't, you

don't have to wait in line. I was like, what do you mean?

I don't have to wait in line. Hello.

Hello. So literally I just walk in

front of a thousand people show my passport volcano.

Sure, so I would guess I've 20 hours in the Egyptian exhibit at

Ethel I've been there. Yeah.

Absolutely. One of my favorite places in the

world will not even. I mean not even close.

Just one of my very first. You got to the I've never been

to the arc. I didn't know what horse racing

was. I've never been in a show or

something he or nothing. Oh my God, but that's my point.

Is that is that I I my first horse race.

I was well into my 20s. I didn't know how to read a form

until my mid-thirties. And being in Europe stuff to

learn to read, get over here, but no it was, it was the very

best. Oh my God.

That's so had my owner. Keep gotta get to the ark.

Then although the new G. Standalone.

Sean is terrible. The old grandstand was so much

better French ruin things. They think they're doing now.

Oh, yeah, like we've never ruined anything here.

Do they put that pyramid in the Louvre?

And they do like the random art by my wife loves that pyramid.

I think a lot of people do I know?

Yeah, I get why they did it but it's just, you know, it is what

it is. But I um, but no it was a very

um, that was a tumultuous summer and you know as a kid relay do

Venice. Hmm.

You know what I'm talking about the steak place.

Yes, where they only serve one kind of snake.

They only serve one kind of his fantastic.

They are right. They got one in New York.

In Montreal in Montreal, my dad and I used to go to Montreal

every summer. Her and my dad would buy his

suits for the year because Montreal is about two years

ahead right. Fashion-wise of everything in,

in, in the US. And we always went to a place in

all they did was prime rib. It was exactly the same.

You didn't get to choose how it came out and do those things.

Just was, we make the best prime rib deal with it.

And it's a part about the related nice.

There's a place like that San Francisco and I forget what it's

called. I think it's called, like the

primer of house or something. There's the related Vinny.

Yeah. The great thing there is you

order your steak and they give it to you, bring you half of it

first. We bring you the second half in

it tastes as good as it just came out of the oven as the

first half so it's brilliant so much.

Really? Oh my God, so so yeah, so no,

it's my I really only have two courses on my horse racing

bucket list and I've been to a shockingly few racetracks in

America shockingly few. Maybe you're no, add McNamara,

maybe 10 or 12. Oh, wow, like really short.

You can get that many around here.

Really, the I don't even I know I'm spoiled to Kentucky and you

know with having, Indiana. Close about Tara.

It's Natty and you know, everything else, but Arlington,

Arlington, I went to, of course, no kidding.

We were both there. We don't have to rehash that.

But um, The only two I have on my bucket list, are launched

Sean and I wanted a lot Rinconada in Venezuela.

Oh, wow, it's in those mountains and that value your time.

Yeah, and I've been told something.

I've been to one South American race track, Sunny Leone came out

of there, all at, you know, Ramon Dominguez Amendment,

right? All those guys came out of that

were missing one who's obvious and I'm trying to remember and

I'm blanking. But yeah, one of the great, one

of the great jockey training areas in the world, frankly and

God, you know, and so I but just the the snakes they asked.

It's not on your bucket list. It is not, you gotta go down.

I've been to ask it not for Royal Ascot, but for British

Champions, okay. Do you have to dress up then

little bit but not a lot if you want to be in the Winner's

enclosure. I my queen.

I've told the story on my podcast.

I told the story on. By the way.

Do this with devolve like this for sure.

We'll get to check Christopher. So, will we that model right?

Yeah. Absolutely.

Yeah, don't you think? I just screams it?

Yeah. Yeah, you look totally informed

on the show. This past weekend.

I said, if he's at 80% of his life is good.

Go there. He should.

Don't you think that's the race. Yeah, frankly.

That's the Jackie, where you show up?

I mean, I wish that we're still on Memorial day, but it's a nice

undercard race on the Belmont Car.

Belmont card is the fifth best card in horse racing.

It might be the fourth. You might be higher than that.

Right? Well, if you tested early days,

you can't Breeders Cup Breeders Cup to.

It might be better than juvenile life.

Every just cutting has been the Derby Day.

Wow, that's absent. The Derby.

They talking under cards absent, the Derby.

If he if he go the John Shimon thing, one horn race makes this

angle than to the derby, but I was yeah, but the Turf classic

and I mean Pat De Mi man the Manhattan and the you know, I

mean come on. I mean it's the pointed toward

different things. Right?

So the three worlds are really helpful.

So part of it, got it. Okay, fairly.

So, anyway, I could be swayed on that.

But where was I going with this? And I forgot you hit rewind.

Remind ha ha. All we gonna do the queen asked

it. Yeah, the queen.

So I made a skit. It's about 10 years ago.

Maybe I'm at the maybe a little more or a little less.

So whenever it was the British champion cedeno you it's a

little more probably, you know covid.

British Champions today and it's my first time in the first race

of the day and they only have six or seven races on right?

Champagne. Stay right there, you know, it's

like one or two and then the big ones.

And so I'm out there and I'm getting my lay of the land and

The Press Room is right next to the winners and closure.

Okay. The saddle area is 200 yards

away. So, you know, I mean, there's a

lot of walking to do, if you want to talk to losers and the

winter. It's almost impossible.

Sure. So I'm getting the lay of the

land. I have no business.

With the first race other than just to see where I am going to

stand after the race, to get what I'm going to get.

And I'm standing in the winters and closure and then all of a

sudden is I've standing there and it's not too many people

there a very well dressed person.

And I think it was a man not Bo Derek.

No, I think was a man. Okay, asked me.

Could you serve please step back just a couple steps, extremely

polite, and apologetic? And all of a sudden who walks,

right? Past be not is huy to baby.

I could have done this with her hat was QE2.

Oh, Lizzy walks right by me and I was like, is she is she the

most famous horse fan in the world right now?

Yeah, it's got to be right. No question.

Yeah, so, you know other than you so I spoke here.

What do we do now? I know the most famous

non-smoking. Well, I don't know that she

doesn't smoke. I think, I bet she crushes is

that, right? I would love if that's true.

And then someone else is like, like managing it for like Jerry

Jones is son. So I hope that's true about the

she walks by me. She's standing in a Phalanx of

people and Harry Herbert. Is there.

Her longtime racing manager, standing right there?

And I've seen it, and I waved to Harry, I'd known him a little

bit. By that point.

He waves to me. And then of course, what are you

going to do? If you've got the queen standing

ten feet, from what you, what are you going to do?

And my case? Hmm, not vomit.

Just no, um, probably very little frankly.

I'm taking a picture, you're wrong.

Flattered, right? Yeah.

Taking a picture. The selfie just taking a

picture. Sure, as she sees him taking a

picture. She looks right at me stoic.

But acknowledging me. Yeah, I take the picture.

She clearly sees, I've taken the picture and then all she looks

to the person next to me, who I see is taking a picture.

Here's a woman who's been photographed for most of her

life. Yeah, so, she knows how this is

done. I was very impressed, very

impressed with her majesty. And I've tried to get her on the

Pod, good for you. By the way, I'm gonna get her.

I've tried sure, I've tried, I've reached out.

I've never even gotten a, with a response from Buckingham Palace,

but I have tried. So, you want a little

Linguistics nerdom at this point, the pot here at an hour

and seven minutes. Now, the Linguistics nerd

portion of the podcast. Everybody drinks are not so

Louis ribs. That's right.

And so everybody drink, we are brought to you by Single Barrel

cigars, the Mike and Megan were thinking of you.

Now as we do the Linguistics part of the pilot Megan, it's

alright, this song all this. They're so happy.

It's like probably about maybe a rally because I wasn't how I was

I was pleased to have. This is the time and Curtis and

Megan. Congratulations.

I mean fantastic news. Curtisha kind of clued me into

what was going on. How appropriate that you have

the party on Mother's Day and Megan.

Yeah, I mean all I know her birthday was on Derby Day knows

that right. How about that?

Oh my God, birthday under B, and then Mother's Day hands to make

that announcement and all I know is I mean with you two, you're

going to have the greatest. Look at Kids America my God and

So anyway, congratulations, so those that listen to the

podcast, if you, if you didn't listen to the derby show, Megan

is pregnant. So we've done three thing.

Three years in a row with Megan. She got a massive speeding

ticket on the September Derby. Then last year and then she got

it. She got engaged on the Derby

this year. She announces that she's

pregnant and I said, hey good luck, coming up with something.

Next year. Twins.

You ready for this? You ready for this last year,

her dad finds out. She's engaged on the Pod because

he was not yet. It happened at morning.

Oh my God, surely. She gets in case you runs

upstairs to do the to the show. She didn't call.

Mama didn't literally shave time.

Okay, you makes this year this year he finds out she's

pregnant. It's the best Peter adult

Peters. A fan power up your papa Divine

and we got news for you coming up on the next show.

Yeah, right. Don't get it.

I said, I said the only option for Megan next year's.

I can't hear divorce talk. Like that's not Odo.

Dance, whatever. I'm so I am on my God that my

wife tonight. You met some of my one of my

kids. Some might want you met Mary,

right? No.

No, I met one gate. Okay, I'm son.

Yeah, you met Charles. Yep.

And so, I have my, all of my kids have old old people names.

So I have a Charles in a merry. No beulas Aura.

Oh, Louie an attacker. He's or she's very old.

Like I know, I'm old Noah Noah, no, no, no, modernism to our

family names. All of this, all of our boys

names ending. S, which is how, you know, their

Latin because estimate singular and not not estimate.

That's how old and not thought of sources and sort of like the,

the band America, all their albums, begin with an H.

So now we, I'm like the band America, there you go.

So but yeah, so I Horse With No Name.

But but yeah, where we at, Ron? Do you think Jack Christopher?

We never got to check. Let's go to Jack.

We kind of talked about met mile.

Yeah, Jack. Christopher coming back.

This was the horse. What might have been his only

one turn horse. Is he.

So is he destined be one turn horse?

What do you bet that Breeders Cup?

Juvenile would have told us if he was the one trying to turn

horse much the same as it was with Jackie's Warrior before

that at Keeneland and we learned he was a 1 turn horse after he

had all the hype about him. Yes, and you We may never know.

We may never know, right? Because now, they are into this

there. Now into a comfort zone.

Met mile. Maybe you just stay with one

turn races. Although what do you do when we

get to Breeders Cup to you? Then drop him into the classic

and see what could have been because the maila Keeneland is

going to be two turns. All the well the well that with

the Mi 4. Well no.

No. The I'm talking about know the

black with the classic smile of quarter, but the mile is to

turns the miles on Turf dirt. My excuse me, the dirt mile

dammit dammit, see everyone. That lets us know that knows

this. I call them the dirt, my own the

turf mile. I'm sorry.

They should flip it around, by the way, because to be

consistent with everything else because this is America, my God,

we're just caught the turf Mi like called the turf.

That's all I've said. Ritmo De Mi are called Turf Mile

in the dirt. Out the torque, my own, the dirt

mild. Like I honestly do that to.

Yeah, that would be the simplest thing to do is real simple.

Anyway, he saw I just Problem Solver so I just I don't know, I

jack Christopher obviously wildly talented it that isn't

the issue. I think he was probably 85%

coming back here. Yeah, and that's the other

thing. There's still there's still a

lot. I think there's a proven to go

there. I remember when violence or not

violence. What was his kid's name?

Holy month ago. Yeah, but his kid was violence

like three years ago. Two years ago.

Oh, yeah. Now you got me thinking.

Yeah. Yeah, so I know you're waiting

for somebody to tell you who it was.

We need a producer. You're not wrong JD.

I miss you buddy the, um, but no.

Just a lot of money. No, but there's a lot of money

in spreading man. Yeah, you could be a, what more

and make plenty of plenty of hay.

And by the way, I have to ask this because this might be my

only thing that I got to go to that.

You didn't were you at the Keeneland Breeders Cup during

the covid? Yeah.

No, there you go. That's the only thing I've been

to the anything. I was, I was in lockdown in

Vegas. So I will be, I will be could

have gone. I didn't.

I just. Okay.

So you have the option at the option on the Derby.

I had all I had the option and everything with the paizo that

possible exception of the Belmont, but I had the option.

You had the Derby invite for that.

Yeah. Okay, and I turned Down.

Like I turned it down quickly because I wanted, you know, the

media relations here. Listen, I don't want to take a

seat. Somebody else can have.

That's right. And they're like 15 miles and I

had, I had family concerns, you know, I mean, absolutely.

No. All that's legitimate.

And so I'm not that isn't it wasn't a wasn't an ethical

question. It was just where you their

question and so like that EPO chal folks.

So that was the word, was that the word thing we were going to

go. It was one of the, it was one of

the moments. It's, you know, when you do

these kinds. So.

Your career much more established in me in the mud.

When I knew we were starting to make it was covid and that they

made sure we were there for Derby, and they made sure we

were there for pregnant. Nice that British Association

that validation, you know, you've arrived.

What was interesting is and guy, you know, for sure GD Hieronymus

over at Keeneland and who just retired while he's there.

But he's like, he's there, he's not, he's an Emeritus were.

There you go and a respected Emeritus.

Well, what's interesting is? Yeah, he retires in there.

Like we kind of still need your help and which makes sense if

you've been around GD and he and horse racing.

So he General. He we get there, Mike and I go

there for our covid test at the time, make sure that we're good

Megan's done hers for for NBC. And for, for Cody photography

and and he says, hey, come on up.

Let's uh, let's get you guys set up for radio row.

We're like, oh, great. And literally, we walk into the

building. We grab three pub tables, and we

put them on the walkway, and he runs an extension cord.

And I say, do you realize you just set up pub tables for the

horse racing? Happy hour.

He said, yeah, I know what I'm doing here.

I know what I'm doing and and so rookie here, but what was great

was and not great, frankly, because this year felt really

good. Right?

I mean the Derby this year, felt really good.

Well good. I don't know that they're really

140,000 people there, but they that's what they said.

Probably 50. I'm thinking 115 maybe but you

know really do. Yeah, I had room to I had with

the infield. Yeah, I had room to okay.

I had room to breathe. They've added so many boxes on

that. Starting line.

I know. But still it's like, it's not

like they're all, you know, you can't put Some people in a box.

I just, you know, okay, interesting.

Alright, that's my old thing, like that, take my old thing on

attendance figures, is that if you show me the disincentive to

lie, and then I will show you a truthful figure.

There is no distance, a to lie. So, yeah, the American pharoah

Derby was 170. It felt a lot more than 20,000

more than what we had. Right?

Is that fair? Here's the thing, I go back to

the cannon Arrow Derby. Where there was no Turf course

and it was patented for 81 and it was like I wasn't there.

R. But you look at it and go that's

a crowd all the infield. Used to be wild, man.

Yeah, so you count that and I'm like, okay.

I mean, it's like at the Preakness, they have a record

crowd. They go, wait a minute.

You just told us 20,000. Seats are condemned.

I mean, come on, please. No.

Fair enough. All right, you don't think, do

you know that this thing was based on program sales and An

average, they calculate an average.

I think what they do. Some wager.

I think they count the staff. Of course they do.

Okay. So the person working the bar

counts. As attending the me tell you

something, by the way, about the live odds on the Preakness.

You will want to watch for this year.

And I want and everybody poo-poos me this on this every

year and we take from Saturday, people are going to Poopoo me at

10:00 on Saturday. The odds will change wildly.

Oh, yeah, you know what happens? Up until 10:00.

It's track only odds with 10:00 on Saturday.

They commingle it 82 and instantly it changes and I found

this out entirely by accident one year.

When I said, well, somebody must have dropped a lot of money and

then after I started scratching and scratching and scratching

beneath the surface, I was finally told by somebody who

would know no. No, they commingle at 10:00

Saturday every year covid year. Okay.

We see where Zach engine or kinky Mo was the favorite.

Right, right on day one. It's like how did Kinky?

Mo get to be the favorite one guy, attract police a hundred

dollar bet. So it was just a first step last

night was the extended. Yeah, and they never told us

what the poolside. They never tell you what the

pool size is. Have you ever been the guy by

the way, you go to bed earlier than I do.

Have you ever been the guy that bets like an Australian hardest

race and puts a hundred bucks in the pool?

Just to watch to make watch the number move.

I've never done that, but I have been the guy to make the bat.

I bet I have not on a harness race, but I bought because I

live, you really I've, oh, yeah, I have I have bet on Australian

race, but I never watched the the Yeah, I know where to find

it. I never watched the board

though. I never have.

Yeah, got it. That's kind of fun.

Now that you got me thinking about.

Oh, it's ridiculous. You can do it by the way, folks

out there. You should do that.

Don't do it. The I was younger when I did

that, the slightly less wise or how much younger were years ago.

Well, yesterday he was younger. Oh man, you know, I think as I'm

looking at us here, do you ever watched you watch the David

Letterman Channel now on YouTube, he's got a new channel

and he puts a lot of new content on there.

No kidding. Yeah.

And he sits there, every bleep to me, by the way, the best

late-night host of all time. I'll go now.

I mean, he's my favorite, but to be but Carson, you had to invent

the We Exist. But yeah, he just because of

Carson, I guess. Yeah, I get it.

And if you saw Carson's early days, he was a lot cooler edgier

than he became. Okay, that's fair.

Especially the hour-and-a-half show, but Letterman.

Yeah, that Letterman brought back all the old Steve Allen

inventiveness. Yeah.

Just pierce the fourth wall and just It's sort of like the way

Saturday Night Live just reacted to guess, though was always a

great was all time. Love is great for sure.

And then some of the eigen David Letterman, by the way hosted, a

late night show. Oh, Jesus Christ.

Came on. After the, after the late news,

late news started at 11:05. You're playing.

He came on at 11:30 Punisher of his.

He's gonna love it. Yeah.

Letterman does the shots walking his dog?

Larry knowledge is fell over. Ha ha ha.

Yeah. I had another harsh die on me

today. Somebody.

Someone else mowed my lawn today.

Yeah. Why don't you saying I got the

back that bad guest house is Holy and guest Wing.

So true. We love ya.

And by the way, cover, the Florida Derby while his car was

running in the parking lot. That's my guy.

I love John man. He gets it, he gets it might be

true. So Letterman does a thing with

Barbara games. He's got some time producers.

He actually host the show and this is like it is shot in a

room, which is like a green screen.

It looks like it's a room. God knows where they're shooting

at. Let him as a garage somewhere.

So in Montana, probably so he, he comes on there and go see a

Barbara. Thank you for having me on your

show and they'll just do, like, reading his see what's on his

iPad or see what texts he got. That's pretty good.

He did one the other day where he answered all the questions

like he was a rock climber and he did it.

All in rock climber. He's and it was just so

Letterman wheel. Look like that right now.

If you watch Letterman Channel, we got the image retention that

because it's getting darker. Yeah, so we have been.

We look like I look like Barbara games.

I'll have the beard, but the with Letterman, by the way,

Letterman is one of those guys I've talked about doing this on

our podcast, having someone on from Indianapolis to talk about

the Indy 500. Hmm, and someone on from Omaha

to talk about the College World Series.

So these towns that have these one time of what time it is.

So talk about Louisville. Talk about ND, talk about Omaha.

I don't know. Where the other ones are hmm

that you would talk about Little Brown Jug.

Oh, that's pretty good. You got that one.

Yeah, that's pretty good Daytona, for sure.

That's a good one. You got that you got but have a

Roundtable of those. People got to go Augusta,

Georgia. That's a really good one.

So I have five six people on. Talk about the traditions of

those places. What the locals do during that

time. Right?

Right. Because there are so many people

in Louisville, and I'm sure you've gotten this that Vibe

since you've been here. Oh my God, that reject the

Derby. Oh, yeah.

Yeah. Yeah.

And the traffic and the people that whatever.

All the other, I leave town during the Derby, you know, that

kind of thing. And then, right?

I've been to Olympics where that happens.

People, leave town during the Olympics.

That makes more sense to me. Yeah, that's an excuse for two

week vacation. Yeah, right.

And those sorts of things first Olympics, Railway in 84.

And how many people left town and then the traffic, what it

was so easy to get around here. You know what?

This is just like the Olympics, all the time.

Now, you know, I've actually proposed they just pick four

spots for the Olympics to Summer to Winter.

I know My waiters go Lillehammer.

Yep, because everybody loved little, I never been to little

hammer in my little bit of Copenhagen as close as I've been

likewise. No God.

No, okay. Oh, no, they're still people

waiting for buses on that. I go Vancouver.

Okay, that's her. Yeah, I go Vancouver.

Hold on, the Salt Lake, Salt Lake.

He say yeah, they didn't nail it.

Yeah, they did nail it. Whether you want to give Mit

Romney credit or not. They did nail it.

Look look. We can be political.

That's fine. But like, by the way, our new

Kentucky Derby trainer winning trainer.

Got a phone call from Trump the day after.

Yeah, by the way, that's the bottom of horse racing.

Twitter searching through all of his tweets to find something.

You don't like about them. Yeah, you could be better than

that. People.

You can be better than that. Yeah.

Other way watch his groom, talk about his life and how he works.

And all those things. That's way more important to me

than whatever, Eric Reid feels about politically good for you.

The people that know the people that we all have and we all have

political opinions, queer are the my have wildly unpopular

political opinion. I shouldn't even say that.

But like things that I know that 55% of people don't agree with

whatever Susie number 55 because that's about right.

I think it is because it's this that divided right?

And and so we both agreed like now you're playing gotcha.

I'm not trying to play another. You're not, I saying I'm also

not to play what about ISM either because I'm not

interested in that either. I'm really not.

And so, but with him, by the way, I spent the day with him

and I just he's a really nice guy.

We there it is. We he treated you.

Well. People around there felt

appreciated. Yeah, Trent's it.

That's all finished. She got a call from Trump.

By the way, every every NBA Finals, winter every MLB, the

president calls that locker room.

Well, Trump's not the president anymore.

I don't know if that some may beg to differ but, you know,

yeah, maybe. Horse racing isn't like that.

You don't have a locker room. Now.

That's true. If your are Creed, you don't

have that. I was you're not spraying

champagne all over the closest. I've seen to that 2015.

Okay and American pharoah wins, the Triple Crown.

I can't get in the news conference because Clinton's in

there and he's not president as I'm president appoint either.

Yeah, by the way, he should be there.

If you wants to be he was it was it was fun to hat to know that

he was there whether you like him or not.

So, do you know this you came on you the last time you're on this

podcast, you remember? Yeah.

Your interview. It was yeah, we were we you

know, we cobbled together something it right at the end

about this. About this length was a December

January while January was. Yeah.

Okay. Do you know who the next guest

was on Donald Trump? Ja adande?

Oh, we know I asked you this. You should go get him and he and

you got him. I knew he wasn't, you know, and

you don't and someone who was it today.

It might have been you who said it was earlier in this podcast.

It was that it was that long ago, people who aren't Our

aren't regulars to the horse racing game, but have a

perspective. That's interesting about horse

racing. Ja.

Dante is incredibly positive about horse racing.

Yeah, and we and we miss those things with people who are

outside of the prism here who really look at the sport, really

positively, I agree. Because the people who are

within it are like, oh we're doing a terrible job.

We're doing this and rather it isn't that it's okay.

There are things we need to fix. I want to preface it with that.

Certainly. We need to be better with Lots

of things women in the sport minorities in sport, whatever my

God. Yes, especially I got write

those two things, for sure, big time, especially with

representation people that are on the screen.

What have you but LBGTQ? Same thing that's got to be

everybody. What's your when you're inside

that room though, and we know the personal lives of people in

that room. There's no acceptance issues,

right? That's true.

You're just a there. You this, you're just there to

do your job. And I think that's what I think.

I think ja got that feeling from the room because he's toll

Outsider, right? He comes with a bunch of his

grad. Students from Northwestern.

He comes down as a literal complete Outsider.

He told a great story on the podcast about randomly getting

into Dream Team practice in in, in France and Monaco.

Hello. Yes, the great of the greatest

game ever played. Other than that.

There's a deer over there by the way.

Yeah. They just look at us instead of

done. That's a do.

There's another one right there. Another do is add a couple

Dozer. Yeah, there you go.

Our neighborhood is full of deer that stand in the middle of the

middle of the roads asking you why you're driving me crazy.

And then, and then end up becoming and then they attract

coyotes. And so people would small dogs

in my neighborhood. Don't love it.

But anyways, the other gorgeous, they're beautiful know, and it's

sort of whitetail. Oh, for sure.

They're always there. Oh, yeah, it's definitely.

This is definitely a white tails.

It raises his tail. Like there's a third one there

to drop something on the ground. Yeah, third one over there.

Yeah. That's, that's where I'm.

That's where I mow. My grass, John, Jay.

But it Dante was one of those guys so he comes down.

So want to talk quick story. You know, what's your it's

Oakdale? Yes, it's Oaks day.

Yeah, and in a weird way he and I have something in common,

which is that we both wrote for the LA Times.

I didn't know that you did in the newsletter.

You know, that about me settled in the newsletter.

Yeah. Alright, okay, but I wrote in

the newsletter to yeah, right. A bunch of assholes wrote in the

newsletter. So the so but he started to

follow me on Twitter because of that.

Well, I didn't know that. How about that?

Right? So I A couple hundred followers

on Twitter. Why I'm a nobody on Twitter, but

more than that. You should follow him.

You really should on that. However, my name is spelled on

Twitter. So the Louis ribbon they go.

So but the but what was cool is he sitting there by himself?

He's got his you know, we're inside.

And it's at that point. This is this past Friday.

No, there's last year last year. Okay, but it's that like many of

us have been vaccinated but it's that like, oh, yeah, right.

Like 12-day thing. Yeah.

Yeah, like, where are we? We still No, the data like no,

no seriously. And he was like 13 days out or

something. Right?

Like he had gotten it, but it wasn't like the full thing that

they suggested, you shouldn't be traveling yet and like he's

being reasonable and safe from whatever and so I see him

sitting by himself in the media bunker.

Hmm, otherwise. Known as the parley are like,

right. Yeah, which is the simulcast

Sarah most of the Year. Anyway, well isn't anymore.

They moved upstairs to the aristides room.

And so I walked past them and I had the moment.

If I had the moment. There's the pretty girl you have

the end with the pretty girl. And I just walked over and I

said, hey Jay, my name is Lou your bow.

We actually follow each other on Twitter and he goes.

Oh, yeah, you're the Oaks guy. And I went bang and all I said

was welcome to Louisville. Do you know how to get outside

to watch the races? And I was, I was doing the

Louisville thing which is trying to be hospitable, right?

You know, Derby and then leave your car, parked on the side of

the freeway. It's some of you will understand

about 5% of our audience will understand that and he looks at

me. He goes, actually, I don't, can

we go right now? And I said, of course, and I'm

holding like seven bottles of water.

You know how that goes. We walk up stairs.

We woke up, we hung out for four hours.

And he would walk down and make his bets, and come back and he

kept coming back. How great is that?

And so, this is where I, and then and then, at the end of the

weekend, I understood exactly where I was at horse racing

media. He spent Oaks with me and derby

with Pat, 40, ha ha, but that's perfect.

I was thinking of Pat, he followed me on to the farm today

with Eric Reid. Oh good.

He was the next appointments. Good.

I saw you, we chatted for all the way.

He follows in. It's worth mentioning of people

have followed horse racing. Media and guys, that care about

it, right about it, Billy Reid, who passed away this year.

Yeah. God bless.

Rest in peace. He started follow.

He started Derby coverage. He was the first, especially on

the national level, when he was at SI.

He was from here. He made the Derby part of that,

coverage it back then it was literally, you had to wait until

Tuesday to get your stuff, right?

Whatever. But Billy Reed was that guy.

He was the first one. I'm gonna go back side.

The reason the reason journalist go back side is Billy Ray.

Wow, no question and Pat 40 is now when that mold, because he's

a local guy, His Daughter, by the way, Brooke.

Iraq is our silver medalist in the relay and the exactly like

told Eric read that I said, he's maybe more famous for his

daughter after himself. Well, he got to go to the

Olympics and cover it. I know and he gives the only

guy, he was the only father who got to greet his daughter after

so awesome. I mean just the best if you

listen to on the Kornheiser podcast, he's on there regularly

and he would all that became a diary of since Mary.

T Maher, there has been an there has been an Olympian who got a

medal in swimming from this couch mcaddie, right.

Everybody. Thanks.

It's one of the great and so, but what's awesome is he, you

know, he really? Last call for alcohol.

There on your thing. My wife is leaving.

The house is leaving you. Yeah, he's fed up.

I, I thought it was an hour to an hour and a half.

The what is it? Yeah.

No, it's all right. The joke on the show is the Hat.

No. Happy hour at last an hour.

Oh, yeah. It's like first Berman's

fastest. Two minutes.

Click format. That's right, which was great.

Yeah. The, New York.

Giants. But the, um, but no, but ja was

one was one of those moments where were, you know, you've

arrived? No, I don't know that.

That's true. But it's it's person to person

and he understood the hospitality of horse racing.

Oh, so it was rather than the profession of it all.

It was the Friendship of it. All, that's exactly right.

Yeah. He needs Mike.

He didn't treat him any differently than he treated me

or anyone else up in that section.

He came back up for a bunch, right?

I probably watched five six races together, that kind of

thing and so it's it is the hospitality of horse race.

Thing that is different than other sports at some point.

You realize there ain't no sacred cow.

Don't worry, you know, I owe it to myself to reach out to him

because I now live in an adjacent state, but I had Doc

Severinsen on the pot. Okay.

Yeah, about three years ago. I want to say and still, I think

he still performing there was a wonderful documentary done on

him, which was part of the reason he came on the podcast.

Yes, but I think he also did it because of a of a Over to his

son who I had reached out to try to get him.

All right, I don't know Alan that.

Well, if at all, I mean, we've traded texts and that's it.

But doc doc with the great story about how he could have own

Sunday, silent Silence by himself that he hadn't thought.

His second wife would divorce him thousand dollars on it and

they have been named in the race tracks after you in Japan right

now because that's true, but there is that there is that

connective tissue is its Kornheiser will say about his

podcast in his community. That That there is a connective

tissue and it's it is where the aristocrats and the proletariat.

If I may use really well, bad terms.

Come together. We do it.

Well, the new, the new design of the paddock at Churchill kills

me because they're getting rid of that.

Yeah, they are where the million-dollar.

The guy owns a million-dollar horse race horse stance x to the

guy Crossing Pall Malls right now, but now 90 way it's gonna

go away to Utopia PSL. Yeah.

That's right. It's really Churchill's.

Become a real estate company. And then absolutely days a year.

It's a PSL company. And look, if you want stock in

Churchill, the stock went up three times its value in the

last two and some odd years, right?

So they're doing something right.

And by the way your point of view you're happy with what's

here and frankly, what they did the turquoise really positive,

right so far. I think I think what they're

about to do. Colonial Dawn, will be really

positive. I hope.

And here's the thing, that's a difference of people say, well,

the oils in the middle of nowhere.

That's it. Because the real estate's worth

noting. The real estate is Santa Anita,

not Churchill, but Stan Anita's Worth some molding and Golden

Gate's worth something and, and even Churchill's worth

something. And certainly Pimlico could be

worth something with, you know, it would be gentrification of

this and the matter. Yeah, but all these places, you

know, Gulfstream could be with calder's worth something, right.

So but but in the middle of nowhere, no, I think they could

make an investment there and I have, you know, and Jill Byrne,

who I adore, and respect to the nth degree, Kurt being one of

the great racing exact. I miss her very much, a church

of the Heidi's sister with a goatee.

A job. Earn is somebody I stand next to

on an elevator and don't even realize this hurt two people has

been broken right next to Steve Beck and she'll burn and didn't

realize it was them each time and Beck had those.

All those Harry Potter glasses on even know it was him.

This was our, we were sitting next to each other sushi.

Bar in Las Vegas different 20 minutes, and I didn't know it's

great. And I and he's so sick of me

bringing that up. It's like Ron, I'm over it Ron.

I'm over it. I'm doing Regis now.

There's one row behind me, doing the the serious stuff this.

He's so good. Here.

He is. Good God, he's Our North Star,

isn't he? He's one of them.

He's my North Star. Okay.

Fair know my, your North Star for me.

I want to be in North. I want to be I want to be steep

dick when I do something really do.

All right, we're going to get out of here because it's getting

dark half, do it's all right. This is the best.

He's Rod flatter, Robert letter racing potholed at Ron flatter

on Twitter night of just Google Ron flatter.

You'll find all the stuff. I blew her, Beau horse racing.

Happy Art. Thanks for hanging out.

Last thing. I'm going to ask you more

likely. Rich, strike wins another

classic race here in the next two, or episode, or sweeps.

The next two. I'm on a center know, I would

say Rich strike. I don't know.

Okay, Senator can get the mile and a half, but I think Rich

strike could win the Preakness? Yeah.

No, no. Like, they could win the

Belmont. Now, they've the bigger question

could be, and I know closers don't win the Belmont, not

recently. But there's this the one that

just tore my was on but as a summarize something I said.

So, but I would say no. I would I would go, I would go

and God, I still say it. I'd still say adding neither

will happen. But I think summer I summarize I

with I think that rich strike wins the Belmont more likely

than epicenter wins. Both of the next to.

All right, I'll take what we in essence.

I'm saying Rich strike this epicenter.

They go in the Belmont. Right?

I'll take a center there. I'm Lyra.

Baroque. He's our I'm flattered.

Thanks for hanging out with us tonight.

This is the horse racing. Happy hour.

We'll see you on Thursday.

Horse Racing Happy Hour
