Kevin Kilroy joined Louie on Rabaut & Co. to look over the late sequence at FGNOLA, including the Gun Runner and Untapable, on the Derby & Oaks trails, respectively.
Fairgrounds Saturday | Kevin Kilroy
Full Transcript
Derby Trail continues tomorrow and it will head a two
fairgrounds where we will find our friend Kevin Kilroy at Trust
Your Luck on the socials. Of course, love bringing him in
this time of year and we will very, very certainly be talking
to him the next three or four months or so.
Kevin, good morning, man. How are you?
Louis, I'm fantastic. Are you the sun is out.
I'm, you know, I, I take the things in life that are given to
me, Kevin, and that is one of them.
I'm getting sun this morning. Our studio has a very nice big
window here on Cardinal Blvd. and, and I, I'm feeling the sun
today, so I'm good. How about you?
Is it sunny down there? How you guys do weather wise?
What are we? What are we looking at this
weekend? Yeah, the temperature dropped
just a touch, but yeah, but not, not nothing bad.
I mean, like the sun is up and we're going to be, I think, 60°
today. Tomorrow it's going to be sunny
and 70s. I'm with you, man.
When the sun is shining on my face, I'm smiling.
And when I'm the sun is shining on my face and I'm walking
around the backside, I'm smiling huge.
And that's what I've been doing this morning.
So life is good. Kevin Kilroy with us, he's down
there at the fairgrounds. They'll have a nice card for you
tomorrow. Late pick 5 starts with rate is
8 and the tenacious we'll get to that in just the second.
But for Someone Like You, Kevin, you know, you're going to be
working at Churchill over Derby week and all of those things.
And obviously a race like the gun runner on that path.
I find the fairgrounds round, especially the early races to be
very indicative of who's at least going to be in the
starting gate for the Kentucky Derby.
Do you find yourself and go ahead and include your personal
biases here? You know, after the Breeders
Cup, do you find yourself looking to to New Orleans more
than other places or are you still looking around Oakland,
Gulfstream, etcetera? In terms of gambling, basically
no, but in. Terms of, you know, where you're
trying to find those, those major contenders for the Derby?
Because I'll be honest, this time of year I'm looking at the
fairgrounds, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
So last year was a little bit of a let down year and where the
the good horses turned out to be great magnitude, you know,
looked fantastic. But he had that set back and
chunk of gold has has done good stuff, you know, in front of
second in the Clark or put the third in the end.
He got nailed per second did he? But but last year was a little
bit of a disappointment. I mean, I think looking at of
course, I'm looking here. I'm looking everywhere.
All all you know, if you tell me there's a Durban contender
running in New Mexico, I'll go. I'll go check that out.
You know what I mean? I mean, wherever is good.
But it does seem the more and more the jocks coming here, Oak
Lawn Fairgrounds, those are the two spots you really want to pay
close attention to. Were you the surprised pleased
at how salty this this this tenacious came up?
Oh. God, the tenacious man, this is
a. Race.
It is a race. It's a serious race.
I don't know what to do with it. I mean, it's just like you can
get excited about every course in here except for except for
one, right? Like that?
Yeah, maybe #1 dude on the outside just over 7 this year.
I mean, maybe. Yeah, right.
That's the one that's like, I don't think that course is going
to win, but the rest of them are big time contenders and you
know, you look at the field and you're like, Oh yeah, not this
boy, Sir Grayland. You know, like these are serious
horses, but they really haven't proven themselves against steaks
company in a serious way. So they're going to have to
class up, but they really feel like they already have in terms
of the fields they space and and etcetera, etcetera.
So yeah, it's what do you are we going to trust just a touch?
I mean, how much money is he? It's a great question, right.
No, I think what is he was he 2 to 5 right by by post time?
And look, there are other horses in here that if something goes
right for them or the local connection on the ground there,
like a Ben Curtis can ride San Ciro, whose last win, by the
way, was a mile to 16th on the dirt at Fairgrounds.
He's going to be 25 to one or something because he's won for
seven this year. But that win was in fact at at
Fairgrounds. But that's why this race is
interesting because if you either have to go with just just
a touch and be done with it or I mean, because The thing is, he's
going to be two to five. What is not this boy going to go
off at? Because I don't think that 2 to
one number. Is it based just on on buyer
figures there or like what's that Bill based on you think?
I think it's based off of Jose Ortiz.
I mean, I think, you know, very Bagley, sorry, not been Tagley
Diliberto, our morning line odds maker.
It'd be a little bit savvy there because where Jose Ortiz goes,
the money goes for sure. I mean that's one of the biggest
sort of things that the market looks at, you know is where,
where is Jose, where is Paco? You know, for this meet, I mean,
he doesn't have a stakes when he's got 2 very close seconds.
Not this boy I love. I don't like him 2 to 1.
And I think he's he's a part of the pace.
And I think if you're going to get away from a forward horse,
like just a touch, you kind of got to to look for somebody
coming from off of it. And there's we'll take it.
He went out of form after looking fantastic in the Hanson
for Dallas ran in the you know, the the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile
didn't didn't do all that much blinkers on late 6 back on
Dallas, you know, in New Orleans.
I mean he's worth a look stowaway.
He's he's another one just doesn't have the class lines and
the stakes win. So the three 4-5 and six.
I think I think it's who I'm going to cover in the in my
multi race wagers. Comoro Vito Amoyde just.
A warrior man, I know. He's Godzilla, right?
Japanese bread for Diadoro. He can Sprint, he can go long,
he's on the rail, Paco's on him. I think he makes it a very
interesting race in terms of just a touch and not this boy
are going to be working out there and Paco's going to going
to, you know, going to do something that's going to cost
it to be a little bit of a crazy race in terms of either going
fast or pushing the pace, prompting it faster.
I think we got to take a little bit of an off the pace approach
to this one. But but I wouldn't be surprised
if anybody won this race except for.
Paco Lopez has hit the board in 39 of his 78 races, exactly 50%
since he's moved to fairgrounds, has won fifteen of those races
at 19%. Coming into this, when we're
talking with Kevin Kilroy, he's down there at fairgrounds in New
Orleans. A texture says sunny and 70 that
doesn't just hang up the phone. The Diliberto Memorial will be
race 900K on the line here. We're going a mile on the 16th
on the turf. Male side of things, the three
and up, Kevin. Always an interesting race,
frankly, every year on this card.
And another nice field here of nine.
Higante in here. We see Emmanuel in here.
Talk about salty races. We've got another one here.
Yeah, You know, I think, I think that.
Yeah, Aspen says. Are we saying Higante?
I like that. Higante sounds more right than
Higante. Let's say Higante.
Sorry, I don't know if I mean you're not.
He got back in the form, you know, at Remington Park just
didn't translate away from here last year.
So it might be a situation where you just kind of got to be in
the right field, got to be in the right jurisdiction, outside
posts holding. A piece.
Lasix, all that sort of stuff. I think we can beat him in here.
Louis, I think we can beat him. I mean, the horse I love the
most in the Dil Alberto is Kapuna.
I'm sure you watched that. 15 to one, longest price of the board,
winning November 7th at Churchill.
Down just a second start on the turf, claimed by Flying P and
Norm Cassie for $100,000. The first thing they do is move
him to the turf and he responded in a big way.
I mean, he settled, he relaxed. That wasn't his style on the
dirt and he just put in a huge stretcher on Gallup, that huge.
He draws perfectly. It seems like Ben Curtis has
jockey had some options and here he is on kapuna.
I think he's the one to get a little bit skinny with it here.
That being said, how good the legalized look on the turf for
his first time for three to go, So it'd be a second time on the
turf. Second time rowing?
Yep. Yeah, second time rowing too.
They went fast. They went super fast.
There's no way that they should have should held on, they should
have came back and and he didn't.
So he's interesting. Theisman has been fantastic.
I'd rather be blessed. We've seen what he can do.
He won them you knees. He needs Lasix like he bled and
in the Louisville and he's just trying to go too far.
So if you wanted to get a little crazy, I think I'd rather be
blessed or legalized could have a a nice little look to him.
But Kippuna for me. Yeah, I love Theismann in this
spot. I think Peter is tipping his
hand a little bit because that horse could run for 1/4 million
bucks on Sunday and only have to ship from the Thurber Training
Center over to Turfway and is instead going down to
Fairgrounds. I think he's tipping his hand
that he thinks he's got a horse here.
Three straight wins for that one.
Ellis Park, Churchill and Keeneland.
The The Forum has traveled all those races are over two turns.
I, I like it very much. I get Luis Saez.
I don't know that I'll get 6 to 1, but I think that horse is
going to try to be on the lead alongside legalized and I think
we'll simply be better late in that one.
We go to the late pick 3. The Untappable is the Oaks Prep
on the card tomorrow at Fairgrounds?
We're talking with Kevin Corey from down there at Trust Your
Luck on the socials. The Untappable, a $100,000 purse
for two year old Phillies going a mile, 70 yards down there on
the dirt. And this is one of those races
where everybody's 5 to 2 up to about 6:00 to 1:00 and there's
eight horses and all of them have a shot.
That's essentially where we're at.
Yeah, it's, it's not the strongest field in terms of
thinking like, is this a Kentucky Oaks winner in here?
I don't necessarily think so. Possibly pashmina.
I mean, pashmina seems to me to be the standout.
And here Rob addresses Constitution, Philly red, white
and blue racing. She she she ran so well in her
first trial, you know, going two turns may track her second race.
Curtis up on her just handled her like she was a serious,
serious horse. And she she raced like that.
I mean, she was she was under wraps to the wire.
She ran a big figure. I think she'll I think she'll
improve off that race. It's a tougher field.
But Hashmina, maybe she could be the Kentucky Oaks runner here,
you know, funny Bunny, she's also entered and I think it's
race 3 on the same card and I'm just by the barn and it wasn't
there yet. But talking to the assistant,
they're not. They're not sure where she's
going to go yet. So hopefully, hopefully,
hopefully I'll have a little scoop later on.
But she's doing well enough. I thought it was a foregone
conclusion she'd be in the Maiden, but she's doing well
enough that that they're seriously considering her well.
Who did he have? Who did he have?
Last year he debuted in a stakes going 6 furlongs and she ended
up being an Oaks horse. Oh, well, that was Is that
simply joking? The one who actually ran in the
Oaks, who wasn't. Simply joking or I, I can't
remember now. Joking.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I mean, it would not be, it
would not surprise me if, if when ran that horse in this spot
tomorrow, it would not surprise. Me.
No, not at all. And he won this race with her
lap, you know. So that was, yeah, he, he's got
some serious 2 year olds. There's no, no, no doubt about
it. They're going to see three of
them, I think. I believe that they all have a
good shot on the card tomorrow. Your sense miss call is running
at fairgrounds, yes. Yes, she, she's, she's running
here. She's looked good.
She had a big excuse. I mean, she had a hip check at
Churchill. Last time in.
The next, you don't often see that, you know, that's tough,
that's tough, that's going to, you know, cost some stress and
make it hard to run. So she she ran better than it
looks there on the 23rd and. You said she was running in this
one. I went back and watched that
race last night and she was flying at the end of that thing.
If she gets a better start at all, she's a serious contender
here. I asked Kenny.
I was like, Kenny, when did Brian just think that she didn't
have a shot after that beginning?
He's like, well, if he didn't ride her like he was, he was
trying to get her to win the race, you know, until the
stretch, he said Brian said that he thought that maybe she was
hurt, you know, with such a big blow out of the gates.
And then he realized that no, she was not at all.
And and he got her rolling. So I think she's a little bit
sneaky in there. But three to 1 morning line
tells me that maybe not. So I don't know who will get a
price on pashmina. Is is my definitely my play in
here. But miss call, funny Bunny, have
a look. We're going to beat Hit Parade,
aren't we? I think this is the one where
Jose Ortiz just wins it. We all go, all right, Jose
Ortiz. All right, all right.
Yeah. Tom Davis.
All right. Yeah.
Yeah, I know those guys. I've heard of that before, but
yeah, that one coming out of Delta Downs, of course I got it.
By the way, that is such a classic Mcpeak horse.
Missed call, $23,000 purchase, Daughter of Silver State.
If he gets that horse of the Oaks, I mean, it's just another
job by Kenny Mcpeek. The gun rider will be the Derby
prep tomorrow at Fairgrounds. Talking with Kevin Kilray at
Trust Your Luck on the socials. He's down there.
He'll be on the track feed tomorrow.
So are you doing you doing paddock stuff down there too?
They got you doing that stuff Still putting microphone in
front of people's faces. No.
Good, I'm just kidding. All right, so it's a mile and a
16th of the dirt. Yeah, it's way too much going
on. 2 year olds, of course, 10 points on the Derby trail,
$100,000 on the line. And this is the true wide open
race. If the lines maker is correct
here, 7 to 2 is the favorite. Lots of horses essentially up to
the six to one. Kevin informed me yesterday that
Arabia Wild will not run tomorrow.
A the son of Gun Runner that's at the field in the Gun Runner.
So who'd you land on instead? Yeah, we're hearing that one of
the three is going to scratch Arabia wild.
Maybe Barry connected won't run at the beginning of the week.
Kenny was thinking maybe not as the week goes on, the father
said, well, you know what, he definitely fits.
I think it's the opposite equation in terms of the
untappable. I'm not sure if we've got an
Oaks horse in that race. I think we've got a couple Derby
horses in this race. The heat fishery, a big, big
colt who I think has a lot of development still left.
Liberty National, another monster for Kenny Mcpeak.
He has been, he has been quite the looker in the morning.
Mr. Punch, I think he impressed me a ton for Brad breaking that
maiden because he got headed at the top of the stretch, came
back, surged and galloped out in a way that would give any owner
Derby greens. Chip Honcho, I think maybe it's
the play. I think maybe it is the now
horse. Steve's won this race a couple
times. Epicenter comes to mind right
off right at the bat and Paco up here, blinkers on who's going to
go with them. You know who's going to go with
Chip Honcho? I think he's going to have a
very nice commanding lead in here.
But Liberty National maybe is the best horse in this field.
It could be 2-3 in here for me. I think Mesquite is one that we
got to try to beat on terms of the win end of things, but
definitely a major player to to get a piece.
What's your read on Crown the Buckeye?
That Ohio Bren? We got to ask about Crown the
Buckeye. I've got a an Ohio based
trainer. He's from Columbus, loves his
Buckeyes. What do we make of Crown the
Buckeye? This is a legitimate question
here. Last seen in Mahoning Valley in
Youngstown. It's a football Friday.
We're talking Youngstown. I, I, I really don't know what
to make of him. He can wait here, though.
Like Baker, it's Jared Blumberry at Fairgrounds.
Of course he can win here. We saw, you know, what was
Jonathan's, Jonathan's way, right?
It was absolutely daytime on the scene for Bauer.
So, you know, we can't can't look past these non Kentucky
breds at all. I'm gonna I don't know.
I don't, I don't trust him. I don't trust him, but that
could be that could be stupid. You know the numbers say you
play them and you could see that with Derosa, like Ed Derosa is
very high this horse and that gave me the hint that on on rags
he looks fantastic. And then on Thursday he looks
fantastic too. So, but he he doesn't seem like
like he can hang with the likes of of these horses on the
inside. Well, there you go.
He's Kevin Kilroy. He's at Trust your Luck on the
socials. He'll be down there tomorrow.
Is there anyone else on the card that you think is kind of a long
shot play somebody might want to look at?
I think a. Lot of baby races tomorrow.
I'll tell you what, there's a it's not a question of who likes
their horses tomorrow, It's a question of who doesn't like
their horses, because everybody is pretty steamy.
Ocelli, the Beckman horse in the last, I think is a big time
player, but then also is Liberty Bayless.
So that's a very, very interesting race.
Bombs, looking at bombs, looking at prices, what's going to lean
on, man? I don't know.
I've got the I think Lindsay Schultz has got a couple that
will offer good prices tomorrow. I think you got to look at
Schultz's two that are entered and maybe take a swing with
them. Funny Bunny, if she does show up
in Race 4, she's going to be quite dangerous in that one.
Scrolling through Lady IVA should run fantastic for Calhoun
in Race 5I mean, you know what we might see, which is very
exciting is Randy is al stall junior Philly.
She's I mean, she's she's on the turf here going 5 1/2.
She's she's bred to go longer. I mean, she's got a sibling who
what maybe I'm thinking about somebody else, but but she's
been out working Solem Val who's a based on Philly for stall.
She's been out working everybody.
She had some trouble out of the gates.
I think they've gotten that straightened out.
You can see from that recent. Work she might.
Be one of the more exciting debuters tomorrow, Maha Beach
Philly. So 6 horse and race one.
There you go. That's a good one.
Nine to two you get you get Paco, who's riding really well.
Yeah, yeah, he is. He's he's here to play.
It's great having Paco here. I.
Absolutely got to take him in in Monmouth last year.
It was very fun so. Free, Paco.
I'll say it free. Paco, there you go, a little
free Paco talk on Reboco. It's 8105 seven.
Well, Kevin, thank you very much.
I have to hang up with you now because the texture told me too.
Because you're going to have nice weather and that's just how
it. Goes Louie.
Thanks for calling man. Good luck as we did.
Thank you, Sir. There's Kevin, trust your luck
on the socials. Kevin Kilroy down there at
Fairgrounds. Really appreciate him jumping on
the show. I'm sure we'll hear from him a
couple more times ahead of the Kentucky Derby.
Reminder programming around here.
We'll have the CFP for you tonight, 7:30 on all stations,
Oklahoma and Alabama. And that one, of course, play by
play for the Louisville Cardinals continues tomorrow.

Busy day around the hardcore. We'll talk about it next.
