That's OPC pest.com careers. Time now for the horse racing,
happy hour live from Churchill Downs for Kentucky Derby 149.
Now here's Mike, Louis and Dan? Well, it's been eventual an
eventful at least 48 Hours. Ruled in full last three hours
here in Churchill Downs, Mike and Avi are joined by Lugo and
the legend Dan Issel. We've also got Pat 40 here from
Sports Illustrated. Because we got to talk about
right out of the bathroom. At the favorite Forte has been
scratching the race. We started hearing rumors about
this Louis Thursday. Yes.
Right. You know, probably right after
lunch took a little longer to develop, but any shock.
They're not for me. I think the only shock was
watching the arguments Pat. And I think, where you back side
when this all went down, I don't know, but now, but I've seen the
video, these videos pretty clear ownership was ready to run them.
You know, Pletcher fell comfortable or was going to do
whatever the ownership has them to do, maybe but State Vet
stepped in my own, Issue. Today, State vets are paid by my
tax dollars in. They don't make a statement.
I'm not okay with that Pat. Where are you on this?
Yeah, no. I mean, I think that.
Yes, like you said, we kind of saw this coming for the last
couple of days and not a shock. But yeah, I would sure like a
little bit of transparency, you know, and we get to know the
other day from darrenrodgers, all transparency, transparency
and then, the State Vet scratches the favorite who
hasn't lost since June. Yeah.
And, and we're just supposed to go away with it.
I bet they're really bothers but that's two different entities.
Churchill Downs, engage our seat.
I understand but they talked about transparency when they
barred Safi, Joseph Wright and safety and all these things
mean. So yeah, I don't, I think those
are probably not unrelated things so that what happened was
Savvy Joseph from what's Happening Here?
I, I can't six you're gonna do, it would help if we hear from
them. But I guess what, I would think
that there is a real this correlation caution to the point
of paranoia almost right now. Like, we can, we cannot afford a
bad incident in the derby, you know.
There was one with eight bells and nobody will ever forget that
and they given you everything that's happening.
The last week, you can't have another bad incident.
What do you make of the? The Joseph suspension didn't
surprise me, you know? I mean I thought that if they're
going to scratch the horses that then Churchill would make some
sort of move of their own and especially I think given the
controversy that surrounded suspending Bob baffert, that was
kind of like, okay, if you've got worries about one trainer,
you better have worries about other trainers.
And the way those horses died, it's not natural and not easily
explainable. Until there's an explanation.
Shouldn't run here iPad. I think that's that's the point
here that these are two different things horses.
We talked about it yesterday, horses are going to break down.
Unfortunately, that's part of the game.
But when horses fall over dead, and there's no explanation.
And you've got the same owner and the same trainer and and
Churchill with the, with the baffert suspension, they said,
Don't Mess With Us, Derby week and, and I know there's another
entity that Kentucky Horse Racing commission, but Churchill
is not going to let this happen on their biggest stage.
Absolutely. Damn, that's the, you know, the
thing is the derby. Churchill Downs, really doesn't
care who wins the Derby, but they don't want a disaster, a
catastrophe in the derby. And so it's more important for
them to have a safely Run Race where even you're being, you're
being overly cautious, you're taking horses out.
Just in case, it's just been a crazy.
And how many degrees is this me. Pat, this is 36.
I 36 in, I mean, we've seen anything like this.
No, I have not I mean it's just been an absolute epidemic of bad
news and even you know, I mean we had Wild on ice and we had
the horse deaths for various reasons but then even like, was
it Wednesday morning a Thursday morning.
We got loose horses, you know, you got to loccs horse screaming
running through the Barns and it's like, what is going on?
It's just the whole thing. It's just been a bad karma week,
you know, really more than anything else.
It is, you've helped. Nothing else is gonna happen,
are we? Getting this out of the way we
about, we always comment. Since John Asher's died, we have
not had a normal Derby who gotten out of the John Asher,
ghost stuff with the earlier part of the week.
We'll see. I don't know how she helps her
Say Never. So Pat were you afford a guy for
to a guy before before the scratch I was one letter and
yeah until until Thursday when the you know the you see him
stumble and you start hearing the rumors everything.
But yeah I liked him and especially with Cyclone Mischief
drawing in and I think Carnage going to go.
I think there's going to be more speed at the front of this race
than people originally thought. And I thought it would set up
well for somebody coming in the stretch like Forte, but now
obviously got to rethink that but there's there's other closes
heck and the same Barn, tap it twice.
So is that your Derby horse? Now, I think so by default, tap,
extra. He's yeah, yeah.
Well Stood Still figuring it out here.
Got a few hours left. He's my default guy right now.
Have 40 with us at that pipe at 40, on Twitter, s i.com, for all
of his stuff as well. You know, with these decisions
how much of it is and we talked about it a little bit earlier
is, Saving Face. It's Derby week for just being
extra cautious. You use the word paranoia.
I don't think that's out of bounds, I think it's absolutely
what's going on right now. This seems like a two-part or to
Joseph gets suspended. You know, this horse is scratch
and then Churchill comes out with a statement later and maybe
this is Kentucky's, you know, the best saying you know we got
your back here. We're gonna scratch the horse
for you, right? Right.
That could be, you know, I mean, There's a lot of politics in
play in these situations. There's so much scrutiny and so
many eyes on this event compared to an average Wednesday out
here. So it's just kind of a whole
different level of magnifying. What happens in today's Point
look yes these things do happen in racing, it sucks, it's
terrible. But you have horses break legs
and not recover from that, but the all the other stuff it's
like Churchill, and and horse racing can deal with leg
injuries. You can't really just Kind of
shrug off our sudden deaths from horse and that sort of thing and
not do something. And so I think it's got to be
kind of a concerted effort from everybody in the industry to
say, we got draw a line selfish media question which was worse,
not facing the media. After the maximum-security, DQ
they come down they make a statement they leave.
Don't take questions or this today not talking at all about
why the scratch happened. I'm going to give them still a
chance to put out a statement or something to her.
Enough are now you see if they can if they have something to
say I hope that they will. The maximum security thing was
just ridiculous. 100 Cute girl sitting there first of all it's
your their we're 22 minutes to make the call which and they
tell us to all come downstairs. Yes I'm going to have them down.
They read a statement then they all get up and walk away.
Scot they even said they weren't a question.
I think they did say they were told they were going to take
question. Yeah.
I don't even remember them but I just know this hellhole.
Like it was crazy. It was nice.
We all sat around waiting and that was it.
I mean, yeah, yeah, it's not a good.
Look at the transparencies, got to get a lot better and
hopefully does Pat 40 Sports Illustrated.
Thanks for joining us giving us a couple minutes and just kind
of give Us shed some light on there.
We really appreciate it. My pleasure honor to be on with
you guys at all right. There you go.
Buddy there. Appreciate his time.
That's the kind of that's the kind of dentists will juice.
We get we get Pat forde on a moment's notice right there, you
know. So hey I had a mind that one up.
I had no I had nothing to do with it I was sitting here
handicapped if Mike's one who went you know of course whenever
from mobile Peta has been common friends and I went over and he's
like I love to come, on course. He's a good friend of the
station, right? Oh Hannah.
Yeah. Yeah we're very fortunate.
At 49 right there. But you know, guys, it's not
just been to Derby but covered 36.
I mean, that's a perspective that we don't have in this box.
Yeah. Yeah.
But from here, you know, and shortly 36 degrees of being here
before, who knows what it was like even before he was in
journalism, right? So I I'm I'm super disappointed.
This is almost feels to me because I really will tell you
Dan. I don't fall in love with the
three old males, very often, and there's been to that, I've
really liked and it's been for Forte and Omaha Beach.
And So, it's obviously the kiss of this feels less bad than
Omaha Beach because I think he was gonna win Omaha Beach.
I love well. And remember this is deja vu all
over again. Because Micra Poli had the
favorite for the Derby in Uncle Mo that he had to scratch, right
at. Right at the last minute.
So I can't imagine and I saw an interview with him yesterday.
And there, they were trying on MBC.
They were trying to get him to say that something was wrong.
The horse and he wouldn't do it. He said he'll be out he'll
Gallop in the morning he will I guaranteed he will run and so
that was that makes me. Think what you said Lou is
absolutely right. If it hadn't been for this state
vets scratching the horse and for those that don't follow
horse-racing that are listening to us today, they jog the horse
on blacktop. I don't understand.
Well it's because if you jog a horse on dirt, are you jog?
A horse on grass? Gasps it might hide something
but if you jog them on blacktop, if there's some are drawing,
it's going to it's going to pop out kind of.
And so the state vets and the videos are all over social
media. We're jogging this horse up and
down the blacktop and it looked like they were they were really
negotiating with Todd and Republic and at the end they you
know the final word was this horse ain't running and look,
I'm critical of the transparency part of this.
I'm not critical of the decision.
I want to be very clear. Yeah, I think that's a very
difficult job. We forget these are human
beings, making these decisions, right?
These are you know, people's livelihoods frankly and they had
this is a very insular business, we're in.
Absolutely Todd. Pletcher is coming back to this
place. Microphone is coming back to
this place. They have to face those people
again. And to make the decision on the
Derby. Favorite is not an easy one and
I think the fact that Todd Pletcher micro polar so
respected as Horsemen and just like what you said day and he's
made that decision before with Uncle Mo they probably gave him
a little bit. More conversation than they
normally would have given him instead of just walking up and
saying your horses are scratched, they probably gave me
a little bit more leash than they probably would have.
They listened to live with more, you know, Pat made a great point
and that is people that aren't horse racing fans like the three
of us they can't wait to jump on something. - in the horse racing
business I said it yesterday, you know, you have to dig, you
go to espn.com, you have to dig to find.
About horse racing and yet when the four horses died and then a
three or four day period here, I was right at the head of the
list. I mean, that story was on top
and so and so people that don't like horse racing, can't wait to
take shots at this and because of that on the biggest stage, I
mean this race this afternoon will be the most watched the
most bet on horse race in the world and Churchill Kentucky.
They just can't afford horse racing in general.
They can't afford something bad to happen and that's why they,
if there's just the little thing wrong, as I'm sure it was with
Forte, they can't let him run bigger.
Picture question, Dan outside of the Derby.
So, I got in trouble because I said that, I thought maximum
security should not be disqualified because the Derby's
different than other races. You're making the case here.
That look, this is the derby, the biggest stage in our sport
more, people are going to watch this and we'll watch the NBA
Finals by a factor of about, 60%.
Yeah. Okay.
If it's Thursday, do they scratch them out to?
You think it allows for? He's probably not, probably not
agree but but but here's, you know, there was so much
scrutiny. I mean some of us, some of us
yesterday said they were chucking this horse because they
weren't happy with the way that and I don't remember who that
was, but somebody said they weren't going to lose meaning
Street and steam for sure was it was because the horse was
training bad. He had the of all the Oaks and
Derby horses are Todd, Pletcher. The last week he had the slowest
work when you watched him gallop, and I don't have a great
eye for a horse, but you watched him Gallop.
I mean, he wasn't striding out at all, Louis even, even without
the trip he wasn't, he wasn't really striding out.
And so because of that scrutiny, because the video of him trip
Thing just jogging on the track was all over the place you know,
it was going to get more scrutinize and so that's why I
say if it was on Thursday I don't think the horse gets
scratch. All agree.
And just so our listeners who are coming to the tracker in
your car, just to know the magnitude of what's happened
here. Yesterday, when we only had four
horses of scratch at the Kentucky Derby, it was the first
time that that had happened since like 2005 2006.
I can't remember exactly. But interestingly, enough in
that case it would one of the scratches was An also eligible
who decided not draw into the race.
So it wasn't a real scratch before that it was 1936.
Five Horses, scratched out the Derby six, horse dies on the
back side. Before the, before we get to,
the official entries, this is completely unheard of, I mean,
completely unheard of, well, a couple of them, there's not much
you can do. I mean, the, the two horses that
had to scratch because of fever practical move and Skinner.
I mean, they just Got done flying in from the west coast
and, you know, these are, these are living things, they're not
machines. And so, you know that, I mean,
how many of us have gotten a cold after we've taken a
cross-country flight are enough, that's growing.
So so those are they don't fly like they used to, no, no, they
really don't know. But, you know, but you hate to
see you hate to see anybody who has paid their money to play the
game. Get this close and then not get
to participate. You own for take your mic.
If only for the day. Okay.
So first off shave, your face s. Well, first of all, I wouldn't
be talking to you if I was around.
Yeah, I know. I can get Ed Rosen.
I know that. What do you do you wait for the
bomb on at this point? Yeah, okay, yeah, okay, just
make sure he's totally well, I mean he doesn't point to
Saratoga, right? He's exactly he's a New Yorker,
you know. It's used to You know, Louis
following this game, used to get five six, seven horses that came
out of the Derby and went to the Preakness now with the 22-week
interval, the, the winner is obligated to go and you get very
few horses. Other than that, he's a new
motor for track. He ran he ran in.
Well, yeah, and I guess you're not obligated to run in the
Preakness but but yeah, he's a New Yorker.
He ran 12 in the Belmont last year.
Right with Mo Donegal in nests. So yeah.
And now the three rates that you won't see this.
You won't see this horse it at Baltimore.
Yeah. Why the three races?
He typically doesn't support the previous in general as much as
teacher because she's right. Yeah, I don't know likes also,
like he likes us. I guarantee if you ask them,
would you rather win the Preakness of the Traverse
sokolow? Not talking about the well, he
also he's not big on the two weeks rest.
Okay, pleasure, especially my pleasure has Fletcher, I don't
know. That Pletcher has run.
Derby horse in the Preakness. That didn't win it, right?
Well, I guess not. I don't think he has.
I mean, that's always been his Mo.
I mean it's it's just what it is.
Let's reset the show real quick just because we started with the
guests. This is horse racing.
Happy hour here on ESPN, 680. 1057 streaming anywhere.
That you are in the world. Happy Derby.
We are so happy that you've chosen to spend part of your
morning with us here on ESPN 680.
We are presented by our friends. They are running right now up in
horseshoe Indianapolis. If you were up in that area,
head over to To Shelbyville. If you don't hit the source bet
you can always hit the craps table or sports book or anything
else. I got everything I got.
Nice poker room. Say hi to Rachel chick.
Cannot say. Hi to Rachel, cores.
And of course, by our friend Chet Mays who is sponsoring a
quarter of the pick five today that we're, you know, getting
with us from Maize, plastic surgery and Aesthetics.
They've got the surgical and non-surgical options over there,
May's plastic surgery.com at dr. Chapman is on all the social.
All right. So, we do have a new, a new
makeup in the derby. It's a different.
It's a different race now, because Lost key players, Dan?
Who would have been major factors at the Finish Line,
including Forte. Of course, a horse like,
practical move out of California, right?
Because he could have been part of that legitimate early speed.
He's shown those flashes. Before in those races at Santa
Anita at low cell. I think we may have a different
race here and I think it probably sets up for a deeper
closer or that one horse that can stalk the fourth or fifth
and get the job done. Absolutely Cabot tries to me if
If you, if you watch the way this track has played the last
two or three days, you got to be clear.
There are no deep closures. Those are the now you're,
they're coming from a little bit off the pace a little bit.
I mean 3 4 5 likes. I haven't seen a horror show in
wet paint last night. Perfect example right Wetpaint
couldn't overcome where she you know what?
I want to make a point about that and I guess this is as good
a time as any. You cannot talk about the Oaks
last night. Yeah, you cannot take a horse
out of what he or she wants to. And I thought, that's what,
that's what they did with what paint wet paint.
If you go back and look at the fantasy, wet paint was five six,
seven lengths behind the next to the last place horse.
I had a horse. This was in the first crop
Secretariat's. First crop name was secretarial
Queen. Okay.
First crop, we ran her in California, she wanted a
daughter Secretariat. The first year, the first crop
Tom gently Me and Sheree. And I were 50/50 Partners on
this Filly, Tommy Tommy breader, took his wanted to say that out
loud. You're gonna keep going to took
her to the sale, RN aider. We had had a very he, and I had
had a really nice cult that sold.
And so, I turned my money over and took half of the Secretariat
Philly. She won a 50 thousand dollar
stake at at Hollywood Park. Then ran second in the Hollywood
Oaks. She went to Del And she was in a
mile in the 16th prep race on the grass for the Del Mar Oaks
going down the back side. Lois, I thought, I thought she'd
been eased because that's the way she ran.
I mean, she just came from way out of it.
She made a nice run, she finished third and got beat two
or three lengths, Bill, Shoemaker rotor that day.
Come back in the Oaks film. Shoemaker - all's your belly
button. Yeah.
Have you ever heard this story? I'm sitting Darryl.
My card was supposed to Rider. I'm sitting sharing, I Gentry,
didn't go this trip because it was on an allowance race.
Sheree and I are sitting in the clubhouse at Del Mar and we get
paged to the maitre d stand never a good sign so it's never
a good sign way before you know pay phones at race.
Tragedy is a telephone. Yeah.
Did they say they'd anus or do you have like some like code
name or like that? No danis.
All right, everybody vote. Go to the, I go to the maitre d
stand, I pick up the phone, you know, the blue.
Got any Delmar say if we get there he says Mr. Whistle now
I'm like 23 years old. Sure mr.
Is so this is a, this is Harry the Hat.
Darryl mcharg just took off the rest of his mounts today.
Would it be? All right?
If Bill, I think he said shoe, would it be all right?
If shoe Road, your horse in the feature today?
Seth I said, yes, sir. I think that'd be.
I think that be just fine that goes.
Michael Mission. And so we go to The Paddock and
she wore our silk. She didn't wear Tommy Sochi,
where are silks? And here comes Bill.
Shoemaker all five foot eight of our 4 foot. 8 are we going to
say five bucks or whatever he was wearing my silks?
It was absolutely terrific. But anyway so now we get ready
for the for the Del Mar Oaks it's a sixteenth of a mile
further. We have another jockey and I
won't say his name but we said take her.
Let her fall. Back.
She doesn't want to be close. You saw, you saw the prep race.
Take her back as sixteenth of a mile further.
Let her come running, you ought to be fine.
They go into the clubhouse. Turn Louis.
And she is five lengths awfully, and she is five lengths off the
lead at the beginning, and she was five lengths off the lead at
the end. You can't make them do
something. They don't want to do.
And I thought that's what happened to Wetpaint yesterday.
I thought, I thought they were afraid.
And it was going to be a slower pace and they tried to keep her
closer to the front and she was, you know, she just kind of ran
in place all the way around. Yeah, I go ahead.
I was just gonna say you make your point.
I just want to know what other trends that we notice from
yesterday. It was interesting watching a
horse, get out front. Stay out front, right, Dan?
Yeah, especially around race, like that, a mile and an eighth
and so that really stood out it stood out that Tyler and I read
were the two best jockey sister. Oh 100%, that's it out.
Tyler got family on his coming into Whatever the high-end
rarefied areas, he'll never ride New York because he makes too
much money here and he's the king of this place.
But that Oaks I'm slightly rooting for verifying in the
derby now because I would like Tyler to get the double.
Yeah. Because he's worked his butt off
here. I've also looked totally
selfishly, he's like, but we come here on Family Day and the
jockeys have to walk through the like the kids like face paint
area and stuff. He stops for pictures because it
gives high fives. It's all goggles that kind of
stuff. So much a great he's been nice
to my kids and so like you know that cops he's a great kid.
Yeah I had a big win on Caravelle and we got it.
We got our first text from, Scott has little today, we'll
see what he has. So Kurt, he was also on
Caravelle, Caravelle. By the way, the only favorite to
win one of us takes regs is only mentioned it yesterday.
Caravelle is a horse that beat the boys, right?
And comes back races against the girls just in really great
turnout. But that was to me, the big
Trend that I noticed out of the seven stakes races.
We had five favorites golf. 221 caravels the only one that gets
it done, right? You know it, sometimes Your
Heroes, let you down and I was all on red, carpet-ready, Yeshua
and didn't let you down and my hero talking into just singling
the fastest horse in the world monies.
Go can't get beat. Oops, that was it.
Yeah, I gave that horse in the picture you did.
Yeah, yeah of course you did. So I just had to single that
race. I'm never singing on a no.
It's Derby Breeders Cup day. I begin because he feels are
just too freaking good. We saw a lot of horses or it's
bricks and mortar or orange, pretty simple.
But also you're not, you're not single in any horses today.
The only one I would even kind of consider is good at all of
the matter is, in that race, right?
I mean, there's no, there's no way.
I mean, I'm not seeing her in Cody's wish so I don't think
there's a single on the car today.
Well, obviously King Russell's a single, I mean, if we gotta be
realistic, they're coordinated from the 23.
I No one thing in the match race between me and Mike, Mages a
single what? Listen, HSN started the race yet
and their ages is. My horse is not on there.
That means the that the bet is, his Arc is our Twitter thing on
it is you can do it. So I would like, I would like,
so yesterday I said I didn't like Forte at all.
Okay. This man said he's going to win
the Derby. Yes, I said Mage will Oh, fate
will finish ahead of forte. Yes.
That that was, that was our BET, right?
But it up as a Twitter poll. Yeah.
And B I want to know. I want to know what, our Twitter
people always either because I can double his first Gandolfo.
I mean, it's only lunch. I mean, how much could it cost?
And now he's saying, oh no Forte scratch that you don't have a
bed anymore bologna. If I had a pair of Churchill
Downs here, On the bed, but we're learning the bed and it's
all. I know.
That's good stuff. Good stuff right there.
But, I mean, again, like Luke, you agree.
I'm here, sorry, I don't care. If you're sorry, I want lunch.
I'm sorry, that's a good stuff. I'm not, sorry, I haven't taken
by. I know, I know exactly what
would happen if the roles were reversed on that one, so yeah.
No. All right, so really, what about
you do? You agrees or single here or is
there? What are you looking on the card
today and then we'll kind of good?
An olive. Yeah.
There's the top of that list for me, would you look maturita to?
And I do, I don't know that she's in her class yet.
Yeah, I think she needs a full healthy year of showing that she
can do a good idea. A good night all did last year,
which race is gonna At All. By the way, that's what it's for
it's early for through, as if it's the first thing for coming
up here pretty quick. Yeah, that's where, yeah, the
Derby City just excuse me. The grade one here, and that's a
good, by the way. Great one field.
Yeah. Oh, yeah.
We got grade one horses in there.
Well, that's, that was my travel column is 12:45, right?
Have what you have a great. All these fields have been
fantastic, and that's why you can't, it's why it's hard to
single, you're having the, the average winter in those States
research today was somewhere between eight and ten to one
Spinderella Spinderella single. Nope.
I see the only the only reason that just after if I'm it's the
fifth race. Ya.
The only reason I would say, goodnight, Olive is not is not a
single is because Chad Brown, Chad.
Brown owns. Especially grass races.
Yeah. And his new horse, New York, New
York, and Gulfstream. He comes to Kentucky.
He didn't have a very good meat. Meet at Keeneland, right?
And he said some horses that have not run well here, so he
doesn't dominate. He hasn't dominated well,
digital chalky like he did Gulfstream and like he does in
New York. And so that's the only reason I
would say, goodnight, all of these other horses aren't in her
class. We thought the same thing
yesterday with money is gold. Yeah, but money is gold.
No, I didn't win an allowance. This horse won the Breeders Cup
Sprint. Come on, Louie.
Come on. Louie Army.
Don't use. I'm sorry.
Come on, I do. I'll catch it.
Somebody's man. All right, let's go ahead and
take a break. Your good idea without were
presented by our friends at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
They are running today. If you are in the Indiana Apple
lacera area, you can go there and check out the live preview
and you have a quickie ready to give out on this.
Third racer. You wanna tell people go by the
sheet? Yeah, horse racing happy.
Our.com sheet. Still available Buck 99 for the
day. We still got three.
Hundred and twelve races left. And so plenty of value there and
you can check it out for the rest of the day.
I got a backpack there sir. All right, dumping water, all
over the place. Here were also presented by base
plastic surgery, dr. Chet maze.
I will talk to him at 1:30. Get his input on the pick five.
Make sure that we've got the proper ticket for The Syndicate.
Hanging out with Amy Sweeney. This is the horse racing.
Happy hour, we'll be back with you.
Next Metro college is a program that helps students pay for
tuition and I didn't believe it. You have to work, third shift,
five days a week. It's a great and Rewarding thing
when you graduate, I would do it all over again.
Just like I just did. You know, those buddies who
magically become medical professionals, when you're not
at the top of your game, the ones who say come on muscle
through it, but then also say, hey, you should probably see my
specialist or surgery or pain meds.
It's almost always false false and false atlético's, physical
therapist. The same therapist who work with
professional athletes can tackle those little aches and pains
from the start before they become big ones.
So next time, don't believe everything you hear.
Instead, start with Athletico schedule.

Cam. Welcome back to the horse
racing. Happy hour live from Churchill
Downs for Kentucky Derby 149. Now here's Mike Louis and Dan.
Alright, welcome back, Mike and awful here with Lou your bow and
Hall of Famer Dan Issel, and we're at Churchill Downs.
Watching some races, third race, getting ready to go off right
here. Louis, we have major fed in this
race. He was in the Kentucky Derby was
the last year. Now he's scratch.
He was trash out. All right, you can say it's
12:45. So I mean that just tells you
what kind of cards that we have, this is the Pleasant You getting
ready to go? An allowance optional claiming
race and they're in the game they're going to go but we're
going to go to we're just going to keep talking.
So there you go. All right.
What a before we start talking about the races and handicapping
the races, any other takeaways from the yolks day that we need
to make sure that we know. I mean, just a Caravel is
turning into an Alzheimer. I mean, you know, it is, it's
one of the, it's one thing to beat the boys in the Breeders
Cup Sprint. It's another thing to come off
the layoffs and beat the boys again, right?
And then leave. Keeneland.
After two wins and come back to Churchill Downs and win again,
right? And so multiple different
Services different company, the fact that she's just, it's not
even a. I mean, it wasn't, it wasn't
interesting. It was at least interesting race
other day yesterday, and she's just that powerful that good.
And frankly, it was a show early.
The Tyler was in the zone. He raided her perfectly.
Yeah, absolutely. Anything else for you Dan?
Well, they are watching the races.
Yeah, don't bother me, leave me alone, kid, whatever you're
doing, have, you know, you go back and after Races are run,
you go back and look at the form again and try to figure out if
you lost where you went wrong and where you went, right?
And when I went back and looked at the Oaks yesterday.
Yeah, I mean sometimes you look at a race he said well I you
know I couldn't bet that horse if they ran the race again.
But you look at the Oaks and we were real idiots for not having
the winner. I mean we picked four canonical
and and South along some points here.
So I have those two of my top three, fourteen five, I'm gonna
have to try here. Continue late is pesci.
Late is going to put you on day. I don't know.
What does the Lord team? Yeah.
Yes. 14 holds on my phone Luis saez aboard that we said he's
nice. But getting back to the Oaks and
we I didn't do a good job. Handicapped in that race at all.
Hey, Ben Roberts, I'm on air here.
I had I had three horses in the Oaks and you know two of them
made sense. Why I bet británico instead of
pretty mischievous? I don't know.
I mean Botanical and it's human breakout.
Yeah. And and she got beat 25 likes,
right? Are there was a reason that Brad
started her on the grass. There was a reason that he left
her here and ran her at Turfway park.
Instead of taking her to the fairgrounds where he took all of
his other horses and and why why?
I even thought that Filly had a chance.
I was kicking In myself, when I went back and looked at it,
because if you read that, especially if you read the trip
lines, she ran second in the fairground, Oaks and stumbled
coming away from the gate. And so it was one of those races
I thought after you went back the horse, the winner was very
playable. Absolutely.
Yeah, and we mentioned earlier, we say, you're a bum dance, a
Dana's Lama, bump, good or bad wedding day yesterday.
I had a great bedding down. You want to know why the gives
out the only guy that had a great wedding day outside of the
Oaks? I played monies.
Go after the fastest horse in the world gotta pee I played a
pick three singling Caravel and going deep like we talked about
you had to go deep in those next two races and I got I got like 8
to 1 and a 9 to 14 50 cents. The pick three paid $180 and
$103 and I had it more than once.
And then in the last race, I'm already sitting at home and I'm
saying, well, you know, you got it, soaks day, you got a bet so
I played a 5-horse exact box. Who in the now excuse me,
trifecta box 5 horse trifecta box in the last race yesterday
and I got a 10 to 1. Over a two to one over a 12 to 1
and, and for fifty cents. And again, I had it more than
once it paid. $300, nice, $300. So I even though, even though I
choked badly on the, on the opes, I had a good day.
There you go. All right, so it only takes a
couple races. That's right.
That's right. That's the thing about when you
hear someone handicapped and you go, well, they miss that race.
It's like what we got. Another one in 20 minutes.
You'll be okay. You know, we'll figure it out.
Four stakes races by the way, where are 243 and Trifecta
today. Yeah, sheets.
They had an inquiry here. There's got to be the jocks are
on the phone. You are the ones whose only in
the Winner's Circle. There was the first it s.
OK, there's interesting, there's an inquiry here.
So top two finishers here, the 5 and the was 52 to 55 David to 72
on the house because I'm going to win.
I've seen this before you go. They're going to take down
maximum-security, Dan. How do you feel?
Because you're back because this is Churchill and, and they've
got a band on the screen. I don't know.
I haven't seen the head on, so I can't tell if this is a
legitimate are never older than you are at Churchill Downs.
You sound older than you ever do, but, you know, along this.
It load management. Louis, I'm sitting, we went with
these seats cost if we weren't, if we weren't on the diamond and
Ivory With these seats cost not good and and you can't see
anything from here, okay? All you can see is a big board
with the band on it that Dan Issel 44 on Twitter, go find him
the show eight. We know what two horses are in
the are in the inquiry. Show us the head on for crying
out loud. They're shown it on the small
board out of there. Yeah.
But you see that stupid? I agree with ya.
Thank you. Thank you.
They have that big born. They don't use it properly that
part I agree with. Oh yeah.
They use it properly cuz cuz They're catering to 22 year olds
who come to the races twice a year, that's who they're
catering to. They Don't Care About Us
horseplayers. I semen.
Well I'm here on Fridays after work anyway they don't need to
worry about me. I have a problem.
These other kids don't be. Did you guys do you guys know?
It's the 14 in the five that are in the I did.
All right. Well we're gonna have good
Vision. We will have four stakes races
while the show was on the last one, being the seventh race
which is the Fires. Terse print that we do some
James Fable glistening. Hey, James, you're a bum,
they've cut up. That's your supposed to be here.
You're a bum. That's the other need to be.
It needs to be said. That's the other thing that made
my day. Not great yesterday.
Streamable was up here. Said he was gonna go down, come
back and he's gonna bring me a drink.
Drink never came, never never came back left behind my partner
on the u.k. Post game show left me high and
dry, no drinking again. Listen tist, took Louise, Mike,
Dan Issel seems startled And he, he was given an old take.
I don't know what it was. It's not about the race.
I don't care what I can see. By the way, I'm glad I'm glad
you picked up the mic. I'm tired of you taking shots at
old people. Nick, Nick Sido has won the
Kentucky Derby. I was awesome 2 more times than
you do that. Then you have doesn't matter
that he's 97 years old on the singer.
He won two Kentucky Derby. So, don't give me that ball
Zito's, not Muskie, Battaglia a little musty Yeah, yeah.
I mean you have to you have to at least as a, that's talking
about, like Indiana bat. No, sir he does.
I don't care. Mike does the morning line.
He does the morning line at the Kentucky Derby.
Did they have a decision here? What's the over-under on drinks
by James Tribble? Yo, day, no change.
What was the text week? No change or jungle stays up?
All right, all right, the change, the 14th of the I did.
The Wrigley Field cup of snake yesterday.
Wondering really proud. Hey, Sam.
And it to those are mine. Sandy my wife strikes, my wife
drinks heard mixed drinks out of a straw to.
That's a straight. Let's go.
All right, we're gonna handicapped.
Hey, Thrace first. And then we can come back and
talk about the fourth race. We're makes makes sense to me,
eighth raises the first race that right on the water.
I lost a chair to NPR. I don't know how I feel about.
Listen, they think that everyone should have a preach.
Are they have Fortune? They have for credentials for
NPR? I asked for a fourth, for the
horse racing. Happy are they asked like I was,
like, cutting off thumbs, okay, this is the race of the eighth.
Race is the Pad de Mi again. Neither none of us think that
the pat De Mi is the typical pad a model that we would normally
see it. Guess it is of course, one mile
on the dirt Dan. Who do you like in the past day
while she's out. I don't know, I mean, I guess if
you made me pick a horse, I take Echo again, gunrunners or
winning everything in there and he his first time out our, the
last time out this year. He won an allowance race at
Oaklawn pretty easily. But I Mike this thing gun pilot
another gun Runner with Tyler Tyler glass Gap Lyon on the
horse that I didn't know what to do with was Hurley Jack right?
Yep. Curly Jack had a really nice
record as a two-year-old six starts, two wins and two
seconds. Three starts here at Churchill
with two wins and a second, he won four hundred seventeen
thousand dollars is a two-year-old, which is a lot of
money if you don't win the Breeders Cup, Juvenile.
And but he has come in as a three-year-old and just thrown
to Absolute Clunkers. In the Risen star, he got beat
Ten and a quarter length in the Louisiana Derby.
He got beat 12 lengths. I mean, if you discount, those
races, he's 12:48 on the morning line.
Maybe that's what, I don't know, how you can discount those two
races. Well, Edgar Morales little
Thomas to them, connecting at a very good percentage here at
Churchill Downs, at 19 percent, twenty three percent overall,
because they run a bunch up in Indianapolis, where our sponsor
horseshoe Indianapolis is a located in running today.
Yeah, yeah, we decided to go with as many horses as possible
in that race in our Ticket. And so I think we're all kind of
in the same spot, which means, of course that Echo again will
win the race by five lengths. Yeah, that's what happens when
you when you go all. I thought there were a few that
here that you could that you could throw out.
We talked about Damon's Mound yesterday, I think he's up, he's
certainly a play against freezing point in the 14th hole
is, is, is a play against, I don't know.
But again, tall boy is coming back from UAE, where he got
beat. 34 lengths by dermis. So the gotta there's a few you
can throw out here but not cocky.
Okay, mr. Robust one looks.
I want to make a couple points again.
This car actually that horse, I'm coming over from overseas.
I'm very sorry. I'm like, I don't know how when
you're tall boy, right? Yeah, one two thousand guineas
there and then get beat by 34 length.
The Derby right? One for one of the distance logo
on one turn. Yeah, that's why, that's why
we're include as many, we can't because there's evidence from,
some of these are at least capable.
What was our Somehow the California Shooters did
yesterday. If I remember right fish there?
Yeah, I believe it was not good. No I don't think so like either
you know just look at his fort Bragg's and grab some money.
Here is a cow for you shiver and I'm not off the California horse
until they prove me wrong today. It's kind of where I'm going to
go with that and when it comes down and this is a, we've seen
better running from horses coming from Keeneland.
Yeah, which isn't always the case.
Alright? And for bolstering cargo.
Yes. So and then one thing I just
went York to Edge. The I think this is good right
to educate, our listeners on who are watching.
This ask me she has the to gunrunners in here with gun
pilot and Echo. Again, he gets you know there's
some conversation with the lowest whole bourbon or we're
already. There we go, I run into there.
All right you know all right cut them off.
All right now and I'm just messing with he's good.
Alright the we got the to gunrunners as me some training.
Both of them talk about about how the jockey Choice kind of
goes with that. The no he's choosing between
Florence Euro. And, and Tyler, Gaffney only
it's not, it's not a poor man's Choice here.
But how do they kind of decide which jock goes with, what
chores, and all that kind of stuff.
I absolutely disagree with you. I think your room is a poor
man's Choice. Okay.
I think he's able to run frontrunners and nothing else.
Okay, he's a terrible timing. Jockey.
Now, my point was Tyler had run Ecco again before and he's all
eilers off of him and running gun pilot and never run, gotten
probably get they like on file. And I agree, that was where I
was trying to get you to hear that in.
They the Interesting thing is remember when Santana and as
mucin were a thing and unbeatable.
Yeah. Yeah.
And and Santana Road, both of these horses last time out.
And he doesn't get, you know, there's a lot of things that go
into it with a jockeys agent and you know who jockeys agent is
going to sometimes ride the Lesser horse to stay in the
barn. So there's Or to make an owner
happy. Yeah.
It's not it's not always that the jockeys riding the horse.
That he thinks has has the best chance to win now.
You know like Pat day now. We're talking about the Pate Mi.
Yeah. Which have different thing
that's after that day, that day used to wait till the entries
came out because you didn't have to.
You didn't have to announce the writer at the time of the
entries, he'd wait till the interest came out and then just
pick the best horse because everybody here and at Everybody
wanted Pat riding their horse, so it's not always that the
jockey thinks that that's the best horse or the trainer.
There are other factor. I agree with that.
But if I would have seen Tyler had that run gun pod before and
Tyler's, not written gun pod before he has read written,
Echo. Again before I Go Again, by the
odds is that is the better horse, you know, not writing
that go again is on gun. Pilot didn't Bay Storm run
really well yesterday in the unbridled.
Unbridled Sydney in the turf, Sprint behind Caravel.
Okay. I know everybody got beat by
Caravelle, but I think she's so if we're talking about
California Shapers, I'm just saying like they're I think
there might be an example of one young guy.
No. You just threw that dead fish.
In my lap. With me.
Not having any information to fight under some.
Yeah. So for shippers from Los
Alamitos Louis. Hello you're usually right on
that Fahrenheit or our expectations.
Yeah, good good night, Olive is 325, here's some more chalk for
you Michael. Well let's see, we're going to
go ahead and go to that for Grace, which is the first Stakes
race of the day I'm flipping through my 12:05.
So coming up in about 17, guys. So we're gonna give you plenty
of time to bet right here, updated updated odds for the
Derby, angel of Empire 722 r92 to tap it price 922, so we have
Co favors right now, fills all the way down to seven to one.
So is dermatologist dr. Erma Jean?
So toga mr. Robbo 721.
Split up, you know what why why they have this up?
You know what was interesting to me was they have this up because
we're all here for the Derby? No, I said while they have this
unit drinks already, that's fair, right?
Yeah. Yeah, while they had this up.
Do you know and I texted this to you last night?
Yes. Do you know that before the
scratch of forte the Oaks Derby favorite was was a was Angel of
Empire. Very, very, very interesting.
You know what happened? People listen to this show.
It's a problem. They think that's a problem.
There were those two popular shock team?
Has anybody texted in to say that my host owes me lunch?
You know what their enough? I have not checked it, I find
it. The 379 680 Louisville 50 to 40
percent. We have gotten a ton of text of
card. We have six courses in this race
for which is the third great, one dirty, this has seven
hundred fifty thousand dollars on the line 7 for a long sort of
start just a little bit inside the bottle.
Shoot, not all the way back to the mile, walk.
The length, actually, an eighth of a mile short of it.
Good night, all here, Dan heavy, heavy favorite.
I read Archie's aboard. Chad Brown is the trainer.
I mean, this horse has been nothing, but spectacular has
only lost. It's her first race ever in his
one, everything since seven straight wins and that first,
right, she did come in second so this horse is dominant and she
beatable can matter a a jump up here.
Well, as I said earlier that, you're getting five to 10
getting ready. Yeah. 72 2722 on Wicked Halo,
who beat matter, a last timeout, and, and five to one on Matt
array. Yeah, I mean, they're all
beatable. We saw that yesterday, this
horse, this horse, so good night, all Has 13 grade ones in
a row and was the champion Sprinter.
Here's a, here's the other thing that I think gives her a big
Edge Mike. That is both Wicked Halo and
matter area are four year olds, goodnight, olives a
five-year-old. The only thing that would give
me cause pauses what I said earlier.
And that is, I read and Chad have not exactly torn-up,
Kentucky. Since they've since they've been
here. This Ring, but I don't see how
she gets beat except for in the Madison.
So she was fine. First off the lamp there, Chad
Brown 30% off of the second awfully off here he and I ran
over five at Churchill Downs. So far this meet 29% though in
their last 250 or so runs seven. Furlongs is her distance. 545
lifetime does have a 1 or 2 buyer in the Saratoga ballerina
handicap. That was in August last year,
they seem to spacer runs out pretty well as well.
So she went a couple months November to excuse me, August to
November. Between that ballerina and the
Breeders Cup Filly and mare Sprint and then she came back.
Of course, just in the Keeneland meet, right at the beginning.
In one of their, there's nowhere.
Does the medicine ranking? The Keeneland race is its top
five, isn't it? Oh yeah.
It's a pretty important, nice. Yeah, it's a high level grade 1
and lots of everybody shows up Society was in that race came in
third year and so yeah I think she's if we're going to sing on
the card today that's it. We're about to see it.
And you have a pig five that does start with this race.
So if you want to go in there, a couple of start off with the
single, like this is, Your best bet for single for the day and I
would agree with that as well. You could also play to pick
three and you could single baby Yoda and rh6 baby.
Go to all day long. I went back and visit baby out
in a stall. Okay, so here's a cold.
Here's a stone-cold pick three, four.
Let's go. All right, good.
Good night, Olive Spinderella and baby.
Oh that. All right, I'm out here doing a
better right here. For you are doing it.
I got a phone cuz And then finally died, which is good.
I wanted to kill it all. They wanted to kill it all day.
Somebody got ya with the battery, right?
You got to like, let it know. I disagree for battery health, I
don't know if that's true battery.
How is that a thing? Battery health.
Got a drink. Every once in a while, the
aren't you on your phone all the time?
Your realtor. Yeah.
Yeah. Have the best phone phreaking.
I feel iPhone, 14, pro. So, what's all you're saying for
battery life or battery, it's better.
Sure, to drain it. And then that is what they say.
Yeah, I'm with you now. How much does it really matter?
Because after a couple years, you just get another iPhone.
I thought you had an old iPhone lonely, like, strable in some of
these other guys, I didn't car in some of these other who
doesn't work. Oh crap, he's on private school.
Now that's not a lie. Walton has an Android?
What are we doing? What are we doing here?
Try to have a civilization. What are we doing?
All right so well it'll give out your pick to regain their Dan.
Dan is going to 53. If I were giving a cold one my
sheet with say 2512, are you playing spinner luggage or a big
fan of salt and pepper? Kato, River Nile River, baby
ready to go dealer dealing, it's going to love them.
I'll shoot dealin. All right, I kind of just want
to talk or walk because I don't know if I want to start a niqab
another race before you take a break, or should we take an
early break? Will you why don't we talk about
a couple of the horses that are in the derby field?
Okay? That sounds like a great idea.
So let's talk with hit show. Start with It through the first
coming out of the wood. So before we do that, I want to
say that. There's one major thing that
we're watching right now with the Derby because it's when we
talk about hitch. Oh great, that's great.
It matters though is the moving of the gate they will more than
likely now that we have a teen stars and Derby going, they're
probably vacate the one and vacate, the 20 I would be in
favor of them. Vacating the one, the two from
what we understand, they have not officially made a decision
yet on which they're going to vacate whether or not hit show
comes Out of the two or the three makes a difference than a
dance. We're up to five NPR people.
I don't understand the world at all.
Well, I couldn't get into your, I couldn't get you on the horse
racing. Happy hour, something with the
word horse racing in it and there's five people from NPR
Here. What are we doing?
I'm here. We trying to end Western
Civilization. You got me here.
You got me. You know what?
I don't know that. They move them.
Mike. You think they go?
I think they got a horse Drew number one and I think I think
they look nothing. 2013 18. Yeah.
That's what I think. I just think I'm gonna go to 319
is my guest. Tonight is probably my absolute
most likely to happen. I feel like in the past when
we've had short feels, they've always been Vacate.
The one first. But I honestly, we were talking
about it in the again the president of room and, and, you
know, there's a lot of people say, oh yeah, it's been done,
that way. It's been done this way and
right now it's been no consensus on what they're going to do.
So we'll try to get that information for the show's over,
but when you talk about hit show, right?
And it really affects to the to horse in the three horse
verifying and to fill the who we think are absolutely contenders.
Yes. Yeah, go ahead.
And with hit show. I think I'm the biggest fan of
hit show on this show. My really, really like his form
trained by Brad Cox. Many Franco rides.
Many frequencies, go to Rider now at Aqueduct.
Yep, in the winter so I like that.
They shipped him in, for this race.
Makes sense, to me, they didn't go find someone else to ride
this horse. You don't pick up a local guy,
like a brine Hernandez, junior or Joe towel more, something
like that. They stick with many Franco
flying in for this when he runs second in the wood.
But before that did have a really great run in the withers,
both of those over fast go and I, they're not fast races.
I'm not going to lie to anybody. You go a mile and an eighth in a
buck fifty. Or they sped it up.
A lot, though, in the wood buck fifty one very deep track on
Long Island, both at Aqueduct, and at Belmont.
I'm always interested how those horses will like getting to this
surface, and this distance. I've always had the, I've always
been at the mind and that they won't let you know, the, this,
the tent for a long as won't bother them, because they're
used to deeper go over a mile and an eighth.
But that hasn't been true for 23 years.
Yeah, Friday is just in my brain, but it's just
empirically, not true. You know, the one man that I
know that is, well, he's not as good as you, you're the best
handicapped, right? But the second best handicapper
I know is the heir to my fortune.
He likes us horse, okay, I need to use the Lord.
He said he went. He said he went back and looked
at that race. Yes.
In New York the wood and he said he was between horses the entire
trip. Yep.
And if you if you read he's game as heck man and and if you read
the trip notes there it says jostle jostle inside the 316
grow. So And when we talked to Brad,
remember we talked to Brad, what they do?
We do once every Wednesday, Brad said when he saw that this
horse, was 30 to 1 on the morning line, he thought it was
a misprint. He thought they made a mistake
and once in a while, jockey jockeys will choose which horses
they talk about app and branded I with with hicho and and again,
I don't have a great eye for a horse but yesterday, I went down
there. Thursday, I went down for the
first race and Brad was Was schooling all four of his Derby
horses and the horse that looked the best to me out of the for no
question that horse, right? And every day makes sense, you
got candy right on time you got candy ride dad tap it Mom.
I mean it's a as we come to expect in these big-time
three-year-old races their breeding is Royal and this is no
exception here. I think he's just a gamer Dan.
I mean, when you were on fire four times and the only time you
miss the board is in an optional claimer here at Churchill gone.
A mile and a sixteenth going to turns for the First time.
And then after that, you don't miss the board.
And we're talking about a hundred thousand dollar race,
the withers and then the Wood Memorial.
I just like that. For my think no one's been more
unlucky with their post position from last two races, then it hit
show 13 in the wood. One in the Kentucky Derby, you
could not get less do, that's it, that's it.
Alright, let's real quick. Talk about Brad's other horse
and we'll take a break. This is verifying the Morning
Line. Odds were 12:45, I'm not 100%
sure. Verified, the one, I've got it,
right. From the actually verifying.
It is still at 1501. Okay.
I think that's a fair number Tyler here.
One The Oaks yesterday aboard you like to salute hoarsely.
We don't you Dan likes him. More than I do.
Dan's been on him as far as a pick for considerably longer
than I have, but yeah, I do, I need to see him put it together
against very good company. He's, you know, there's no shame
in being beaten by tablet, rice, filenet.
No? There's no shame in any of that.
If we like me to Florida as people do, then you have Like
verifying here. I think right?
I think so. Okay, I think so.
Yeah. So I think he's in that, so Mike
if we had like an a group, he's in the B plus I would agree.
I think that's where he is. Daniel grew the B+ grade.
Yeah. Okay.
Yeah. But but I think he can win.
I want to be clear, but look at, look at the, the, the last race
when he got beat a neck by tap it twice, I thought he was that
was a gutty performance. And in the rebel, I kind of draw
a line through that. It was on a sloppy racetrack.
He's got a terrible way. It figure.
Yeah, I he's not in the a group but he isn't far behind.
All right. Well, let's go ahead and take a
break. We'll be right back, this is the
horse racing. Happy hour.
