favorite wine, beer and spirits with selections customized to
local tastes? For over 25 years that go to
place has been Cox's Spirit Shop, Cox's Louisville's Go To
Liquor store live from Churchill Downs for Kentucky Derby 150.
It's the horse racing happy hour on ESPN 680 and one O 5 Seven.
Here are your hosts Louie Rabeau and Mike Gandolfo.
All right. Let's go, baby.
We're here. Derby 150, we're all about it.
Mike, Endovo, Louie Repo. We're up at the top of the
luxury suites of 3/22 for the media.
Did you say repo? Repo.
OK, how about that? Holy, holy, he wins that he's
going to be on. I need Brooke Smith to win
today. Shirtless infield, running
around drinking out of trophies. Sierra Leone.
That would be unbelievable. You'll see a shirtless, long
haired older man. We are.
We're up here. We're ready to go.
It's getting a great day. We got ISIL coming on in 1/2
hour, half hour. We're going to have a Kentucky
agricultural commissioner coming on 11, Jonathan.
Schell Quick. One and and then the guy amaze.
Amaze man pick five every year. By the way, we're also going to
be stuffing some money in your pockets, giving you out some
great picks throughout the day, no question.
So hopefully you get. One for one on the single and
the pick three on the sheet. So you are gold book bets.com,
let it go, gold book bets.com. We had a nice little look, $5
pick, three base price man. Only 20 bucks to play.
Got another single coming up in this next race.
Trying to get you paid to gold book bets.com.
We use that money. I think people need to know.
Hey, these are layouts. This under card.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, fire dude.
Sometimes you see starts with the future.
Well, that's basically what it is.
And I think like this race, not the second race that's coming up
with the third race, more so the second race to get off a little
bit late, right. The third race, you see some
horses coming down. I'll stick into an allowance
company, sure, the horses coming up into the allowance company.
It's kind of, it's just. Kind of, yeah.
You see that intertwining of of horses either in maybe in
different directions of their career, or maybe they just need
to take a step back down, get their feet underneath them, get
that confidence back, something like that.
So Race 2's getting ready to go. Louie, who did you have in Race
2 that you said? Yeah.
We got the six on top to Silla and I I apologize 3:00 to 5:00
on the on the line here and and so people obviously agreeing
with me here got the four Steel Racer in second spot though.
So if you were looking for maybe a little bit more of a price,
maybe Steel Racer would be the horse that you want to play
here. But yeah, we got the six on top
here, Steel Racer Irad Ortiz and Jesus Esquivel.
The track is is rated as muddy right?
Now, of course, they scratched out.
But the this is the one mile race, one turn, one mile.
They use the shoot. It's it's going to be upgraded
here pretty soon I would think. Louie, no question is this
already looks as close to fast. As a piece.
So I think it's going to be about this, this brown hue the
rest of the day and I think we're going to have a really
fair day racing. I think so too.
In the first race, what we saw too, by the way, we saw first
for Brad Cox wins that made Special 8.
We're not surprised by that at all for Azaru, you know the the
Churchill Downs thing. But really what we saw was a
return to the form we saw earlier in the week, Mike, where
you were able to close, but boy, you didn't want to be too far
back, right? And so we're seeing that again
this morning. If we're back to the form we saw
earlier this week, I feel good about our picks and I feel good
about what we've said so far this week about the Derby and
the cards, frankly, the races on the other cards.
Now, the stakes races. Yesterday, though, you really
had to be up front. That is correct.
I think that's absolutely correct.
Jeff. Torpedo, Anna may have made you
really think, is it just fierce as a show today, right.
And now we're not going to have that seal track.
You know how this is sometimes that seal track beams out that
early speed, you're able to maintain it.
You just stay on the front like that.
I just wonder, you know, today, a little bit more fair, Fierce
says. Getting that distance for the
first time, whatever it might be, is one of those horses in
that final fraction, you know, top three, one of those that's
going to run them down. Of course, we'll be right here
talking. About torpedo Anis run
yesterday, that opening fraction Lily was sub 23 and she kept
that pace. They hit the top of the stretch.
She broke away. It was unbelievable.
Just watch so. So we watched too.
Part of that was we watched Brian Hernandez junior give a
master class on getting to the front, slowing the pace down so
that his horse can take a little bit of a breeder on the inside.
On the inside was able to slow it down into the 20 fives for
some of those fractions. And so our six year, our other
single in the pick three here is in the lead is going to start to
pull away a little bit as big as you would say eat some more.
So if you're not in yet folks, that's two for two today.
We had five odd top winners yesterday.
Gold book bets.com Already off to a banging start so far that's
fantastic. Yeah.
So the six there again we're looking at a stalker was up, was
up towards the front but not in the lead, got to the top stretch
in the in the middle lane was where that horse came from.
With that, oh, by the way, we had the cold trifecta in the
book. Boom, boom.
Where it is. Give the address.
Gold book bets.com people, it's 15 bucks.
I I don't know what to tell you. We use the money to travel,
quite literally. This is how we get money to go
to Baltimore. I'm not kidding.
Or to the Breeders Cup in the fall like this is I do the gold
book. You know takes me 2025 hours to
put it together for this week. And we do it because we know
that it's going to, you know, rocket us into being able to,
you know, not have to pay out of pocket to go to Baltimore and
those kinds of. Things.
All right, let's talk about what else was impressive yesterday.
Sub 135 for the mile. Wow.
OK, so folks, we got a fast track today.
Let's be really clear. One sub 135 for the mile
goodness and that horse was geared down OK.
So we're we're looking at speed today folks.
Boy, that makes me really doubt some of those deeper closer.
So fierceness is looking like it could be.
It's a good. Spot for him today.
That's right. Yep.
We'll talk about a lot of those horses later.
Point on point. That's fast, dude.
He didn't touch him. What else?
Look at that. 16 Volt doesn't touch him.
What else did impressed you yesterday?
Idiomatic. Let's start out there when the
launch win. Great.
That's a great point to start. Great place to start.
We're set up this year, Mike. And here's what's cool.
Torpedo Anna ran a better figure on the track yesterday.
We're set up again. This show tells you over and
over, Fall in love with the Phillies over and over.
No question the Oaks, one of our very favorite races of the year,
leads into that distaff. In the fall, Torpedo Anna runs
faster than idiomatic yesterday, now idiomatic.
First off, the layoff yesterday. Fantastic.
They did everything they needed to do in the law.
Try end. So not going to hold that
against her at all. I think as she gets better this
year, I think Torpedo Anna, if she can keep that style, that
distaff could be absolute fire. Because how many other horses in
that oaks do we love? Five or six?
Oh yeah. Oh, that class is so good.
If they stay healthy, man, we could have a lot of fun this.
Summer. I mean, and we talked about it
too, that the Oaks really isn't the premier Philly race for
three-year olds, right? So you got the Acorn.
In five weeks, that's right. You have the Alabama in August
and like so, like the older females don't meet these
three-year olds really until we get to the Breeders.
That's exactly right. That's a great point by you.
They do head to Saratoga for that summer.
They run the test. They run it, you know, in that
Alabama and as you mentioned, the Violet of quarter Alabama,
for whatever the hell reason, they run it for a mile of the
quarter. Let's go.
And so, yeah, Thorpedo Anna that style.
Did you see anything about her yesterday that makes you think
she couldn't get another eighth of a mile?
No, she was. I saw, I saw Brian Hernandez
junior this morning and I said man that's a hell of a ride and
I I sometimes jockeys don't get credit for the on the lead races
and he did what what we talked about those quick fractions to
get the lead and be comfortable but then he got to the
Bachelors, he slowed it down man and that's knowing how to do
that. Having that intuition is why a
guy like Brian Hernandez Junior is just one of the very best.
All right, who else stood out to yesterday?
I don't know if we need to go through every race.
But yeah, you know, I had accidentally put away the other
past performances from yesterday.
I apologize for that. Give me two seconds here.
But. You know full of oaks say you
know our best pick yesterday was almost certainly in that tenth
race in the Edgewood. I went on top of dynamic
pricing. Oh my gosh.
Yeah, you hit that if you liked it more than the justify.
Yeah, so I I liked it a little bit more than hard to justify
who came in. It did a lot of the work in that
race, right? But that's an exciting thing
too. Here, Mike, we're getting these
these divisions in horse racing. If you're willing to step
outside of the three-year old Colts, if you're willing to pay
attention. We got a bunch of nice
three-year olds this year. And look, maybe this Derby
actually ends up being one of those where we look back and we
go man fierce, as was that horse or man, Sierra Leone was that
horse or, I don't know, catching freedom.
Whatever it is, maybe that horse is in that field.
Mike, it just doesn't feel like it right now.
And I think some years we do this and you know, it reminds
me. Yeah.
Right. Yeah, that's a really great
point too. Sometimes we meet him later in
the year, but in this case, you know, it's one of my favorite
lines from my colleague Judeiner at ESPN 680.
You know, he's talking to to Richard Pitino and and Richard's
going through about all the great things about the other
team and and and you know, true looks.
Adam says what you you got a good team too.
And he goes, well, yeah, everyone hates their own
players, right? And I think what happens is
sometimes we get in the bubble of watching these replays and we
pick the little, the little inconsistencies, we pick the
little problems and we forget, like you always like to point
out that we're really watching horses that are not even mature
yet. This is an incredible stage for
essentially high level middle school aged athletes that we're
talking about if we're talking about human sports.
And so I think sometimes we just get in our heads, oh, this horse
can't do this based on what, 5 races?
Let's be better? Well.
We're going to see a horse like that today with Zozos, right?
I mean, it's a great Derby, was in the Derby with Rich Strike
and he's. In the Churchill Downs, he's.
Unblade one, by the way, incredible career with zozos.
And and frankly I think one of those that you could probably
look at and think that's that's where I want to go skinny in my
ticket. Now we're not in our picks but
if you wanted to go skinny Zozos might be that guy he doesn't
well I had I had his horse second which is good that's
actually gun pilot was in that race as well.
Good to hear that from him yesterday are.
You getting some hand cabin? Oh, we absolutely.
Get into We're going to start. By the way, we're two for two
today, folks. Let's let's keep it going.
Gold Books. Yeah.
Gold Book. bets.com. Go get in with us.
We're having a great time again that just funds the show.
Pays for our website pays for. Like Mike needed to buy a
speaker. So we could do that that you
know that seminar the other day that kind of stuff.
It pays for that. It's that kind of stuff.
So get it today. Gold book bets time.
All right. We're.
Going to start with the fourth race.
This is the Knicks. Go overnight stakes.
Louie, explain to people what an overnight stakes is.
Oh, OK. I don't know.
I thought we did know. I don't.
Know. Well, never mind that.
I think it's the one that fills with the horses that didn't get
into the other, or it's a stakes for horses that haven't won a
stakes recently. So this is not a great at stakes
race. By the way, I'm pulling up the
text line 437-9680, 502-437-9680 if you want to get in.
If you have questions, if you have a horse you like.
Hey Louis, what are we doing with this?
Just let us know. Go ahead.
One mile here on the dirt for the Knicks.
Go overnight, just like the race we just saw.
Who did you like in the 4th? Race.
Yeah. So the fourth race I went to
best actor. I'm a little chalky here 5 to 2.
Flavi and Pratt and Brad Cox. Of course they'll catch up on on
on catching steel later not catching steel.
Catching freedom later apologize.
And so I, I, you know I think that horse coming out of the New
Orleans classic getting back to a mile only having to go one
turn 3 for four in lifetime at the distance.
That one just makes sense to me. So we'll go with the six on top
in race for Oscar eclipses in this race as well.
The 11 on the outside we get. Jose Ortiz, We get Brian Lynch.
Jose Ortiz had the biggest upset in any of the stakes yesterday
on the turf. Brian Lynch has turned into a
fine fine dirt trainer in his career and making the move from
Australia to Kentucky. I think the two of them really
good comes out of that shirt that Sir Shackleton at 7
Furlongs, if you watch him in that race, went back and watched
that the other day, he's stalking the entire time and
makes his move at the very end. I think actually the added
distance will be really good for him.
A Son of Oscar performance. You know The funny thing?
We got Strava in this race and again, the same thing we thought
was a three-year old. This horse could elevate to be a
stud. And Strava, though, is the 88 to
1 coming off a win with Irad Ortiz.
At Oakland Park. And we watched, and we watched
horses come from Oakland yesterday.
One run well in the slop today. If you wanted a longer shot,
that's a great one. I read Ortiz at 8:00 to 1:00.
Take that all day. But Strava was a Grade 1
contender at least. Don't, don't think.
Never ever never won a A grade one.
But I wasn't that Grade 1 Malibu back in the day?
OK then the fifth race here, Louis, and we're going to just
get a couple raises out before we get to Issel.
Yeah, it's a little 1130, Yep. We got the Twin Spires Turf
Sprint. It is a 5 1/2 fur long.
First off, what do you think about the Turf force yesterday?
I thought it played totally fair.
I thought you could. You could close on it.
I thought you could. You could get out front and stay
out front like Jose did yesterday.
Handle the water OK. It handled the water fine.
It looks OK today. Look, is it is it going to be
good for four races a day, the whole meet?
Absolutely not. But I think for today's
purposes, if that's what you're asking about, I think we're
fine. I.
Think people just care about today?
That's. Right at.
The end of the day, right? 5 1/2 furlong Sprint here on the
dirt. And this is for three-year olds
and up. Who did you like?
In this man I went toward the outside.
The 10 big invasion is in here for Christophe Lamont has won
over the course before. It's coming out of a really nice
run at Gulfstream Park. Last out, ran 4th by 1 1/2
lengths. Really, really torrid pace and
closed into it. So this is a horse that I'm
looking to see if they'll be sitting about mid pack.
Something like that did run in the Breeders Cup turf Sprint
last year. Finished second.
We're all second off the layoff here, so I'm really depending on
that for moving in five to one here because of the connections.
Six for 11 lifetime at this distance with three finishes in
second place in sprints to be up there that often. 9 times out of
11 in turf races. I've said this a lot over the
last couple of days so I apologize for repetition, but in
turf races Mike, as long as a horse is there at the end, I
trust them to be there at the end again.
And this is a horse 9 times and eleven runs that has done
exactly that. Look for Mischief Magic.
The 8th Frankie Dettori is in. He's riding a lot for Charlie
Appleby today. I think.
I don't have to explain to a lot of people listening how good
Charlie Appleby is, but if you don't know who he is, he's a
trainer for the British Isles. He brings horses over for big,
big spots. Obviously he thinks his horse
has a spot here He ran in the Shaker town.
Last out is a four year old son of Exceed and Excel and
Australian bread. Actually it's interesting, but
ran really well in the Shaker town.
Second time in the United States, run after running in the
Arabian Peninsula. We talk about that on the show a
lot as well. Sometimes horses need a run back
in the States to get going. This is a horse that had never
run in the States before that now is run once at Keeneland.
Ran really well under Tyler. Another kind of closer though.
So interesting that I have two closers on top in this turf race
and we're going to go to four we.
Got somebody get engaged. Guy got engaged on the tracks.
Do we like that? Do we like that of?
Course. We do.
Oh, good man. I case you back to Megan.
That's true, actually. That was a it was a great.
That was a really nice day, actually.
That's a great. You.
Know did the damn thing, didn't he?
That's right. That's right.
Notorious is the four horse here four fifth motto.
Flavian Pratt gets the amount here. 19% coming off of a layoff
like this. Does hit at 16% of graded
stakes. Fill the model.
Very, very good at taking shots and hitting about 1/6 of the
time in turf races. Give me those three horses on
top of the. Way we're talking about some
serious turf sprinters. Oh my goodness.
Most stash is 20 to one in this field.
Dude, that's legit. This is a grade 2.
Yes. And I think, I think if you
wanted to spread here, I think it's not a bad, it's not a feel.
Like a grade 2 plus field. Yes, absolutely.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. I mean this.
Is a big big? Charlie Appleby shipping for a
turf Sprint where the horse has to take a turn instead of just
going a straight line is is actually a sign.
You're totally right. That's a giveaway that he thinks
it's more than a great two. But we got.
Horses that ran that Breeders' Cup turf Sprint last year that's
a both notorious in big invasion, big invasion finishing
second in the Breeders Cup turf Sprint that was in San Anita
where Louis and I were there. We saw that.
We saw that live. There you go.
All right. You.
Want to go through a couple of Derby horses or what do you
want? To do, yeah, we can do that for
sure. I do want to talk about, you
know, some of these races with Thistle for sure, but you're
right, we should definitely start going through Derby.
Horses. All right.
We'll go through the Derby. Horses.
What we're going to do is we're just going to go one through 20.
We kind of go through the field, talk about what we like, what we
don't like, gives you an opportunity to kind of get your
plays together. We'll do a couple each segment.
We're going to have a tribute question each segment.
Like we said, Luke, Dan Thistle coming on at the at the at the
next segment here on the horse Racing happier.
I'm Mike Adolfo. He's Lou Rebeau and the Derby
this year is race 12. All right.
So we're going to start with the one horse which is Door Knock.
Door Knock has beaten Sierra Leone.
Door Knock has shown an amazing amount of talent.
He won the Remsen, which is the like.
Has the Remsen ever been talked about more than this year?
I talked about it this morning on WLKY.
The Remsen is never I I'm so impressed that we have so many
horses that were there in the fall that I mean.
December beginning. Man, it's just been crazy.
Well, what's wild is we have two races like that.
We have that Remsen that was in at Aqueduct like you mentioned
door knock domestic products obviously Sierra Leone there
again what I no one's talking about how ironic it is there one
and two in this race that they're right next to each other
after that finish in the Remsen. But then the the most stronghold
too, right now made in special weight which is not even.
That's exactly right. So stronghold, resilience, track
Phantom in the same race here at Churchill Downs.
It's interesting we tell people start watching these races
September, October, November. Watch those maiden, watch those
early 2 year old preps and sometimes you'll find a Derby
prep. I love it.
So door knock here. Louis Suez aboard here and and
what did you think about this is one of Gargan's horses?
We had Gargan on this week. You know, it's interesting.
I actually, just, I talked about this when I was on with Fred and
I said the interesting thing is and you know, we for years we
talked about Bob Baffert doing this.
He would just talk about the horse he wanted to talk about
Gargan kind of did that with us on Monday with society man.
Did you not feel that way? He talked about him way more.
He was really excited to get Frankie to Tory for that mount
for, for instance, door knock, though.
If you're going to be a speed horse and catch the 1:00, this
is the era to do it with the new gate, right?
Because he's not going to have to take that right turn or try
to beat horses. The other good news for him is
Sierra Leone Mystic Dan. They're not fast Breakers.
They're going to go back anyway and he gets to save ground.
By the time we get to the Derby, that's there's not going to be
any issue with the rail. He's going to be able to run up
there. If you wanted to use door knock
at all, this might be the year. It really might be.
I'm not going to, but I would understand the case for.
Him in that rim seat. Well, look, he's son of good
magic. All this kind of stuff, all
these guys have hit the board before.
It makes total sense that he, you know, his mom's My big brown
Pook was a serious source. Full brother to mage obviously
won the the won the Derby last year.
Yeah, if you're looking for a price, man, that horse
definitely makes sense. Yeah, And then once he's won,
that's what he's done. By the way, the story there too.
Sometimes it's sports. I think the stories happen and
we just assume it's coincidence. I think once in a while, like, I
like Danny Gargan, who didn't grow up very different than Brad
Cox right around the corner. This was his home track.
His dad was a jockey here, won the Oaks, won the Clark
Handicap. Sometimes it's personal for
those guys. Their focus is better, their
training is better. They notice little things.
Who knows what Thorna? I mean, I yeah, I can't be a
complete toss. No, not a horse that beat Sierra
Leone. Not, not right.
Not when we saw a horse get out front, stay out front yesterday.
And by the way, won the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream.
And horses translate well from Gulfstream to here.
They just do. So no, there's a lot of
positives about him. All right, Sierra Leone is the 2
horse, Tyler Gafflion by the. Way someone's going to listen to
this show and be like, oh great, I got to bet all twenty horses.
That's not what I'm trying to do.
I'm just trying to make a case. Don't worry, don't.
Get wrong. Would we be shocked at door
Knock One? Absolutely not.
You know, are we given a big percentage chance of Door knock
winning? No.
It's like 4, yeah. Right four to six and is door
knock also one that you would say was either wins or misses
the. Board.
I think he misses the board. Yeah, he's not one you'd want to
complete, you know You wouldn't want to box, right?
But if you want to put him up top, you couldn't.
Unless somehow he's able to maintain and he gets past at the
end. But I think that horse is much
more likely to be fierceness this year.
In in his lifetime, six starts, three wins, two second places.
So that to that point that's that's when those two.
Those two show or two places. Is so we got someone playing
along with the book today as as texted in yes Sir.
Let's get this 9 ohm here. Catching freedom, my Derby pick
Louisiana Derby extremely impressive.
Some horses are just waiters and catching freedom is that horse
will be in a much spotter out of better spot out of the gate
today. Catching freedom you will find
out later. Is second in my Derby rankings
how about that. So I agree with the I agree with
the texture. I think it will be very, very
much part of the equation today. Door knocks.
Current odds? Well, we started off 20 to 1.
Can I guess? Yeah. 312121 Good job on the
Good job in the Morning Line. How about that?
Yeah. Alright, Sierra Leone is the 2
horse. I mean Sierra Leone comes in one
of the hottest horses out there people would say could have been
the Co favorite, gets that dreaded 2 spot.
People kind of forgot about him just a little bit 3:00 to 1:00
in the morning line. So you know, till the morning
line gave him a good, you know, they they lost the draw.
No question, they are the horse that lost the draw.
Yes, if Sierra Leone is going to, Sierra Leone's going to drop
to the back. That's everyone's coming to the
rail. You know, I talked to Chad Brown
at the draw and the only thing he said was a positive was
because of the two, he's able to save ground going to the first
turn. There's less distance to cover
and I don't, you know, in our heads, Do you really think of
the 17 as way different than the two as far as saving ground to
the first turn I? Don't.
But apparently it is a real thing.
And so I got to get over it, right?
It's one of those things where Louis was wrong, you know, one
of those things. And so I think in this case, he
said it was a couple clicks more closer to the rail than we
wanted to be. I think that's a reasonable take
and it's probably the right one. I think they rather be at 5 or
something, right? Well, it's interesting because
like if you look at the Oaks versus the Derby, it's probably
something that really got Leslie Rose yesterday, some of the 14,
but you got that extra distance down a stretch and the Derby is
not that. Big now you have to do more
work, right? But if you're going to get the
mile accord, you going to get the mile right.
And I think we're both in agreement on that.
So, yeah, Sierra Leone, it's. A bigger deal going on the.
Turn If that horse at some point is last in the Kentucky Derby,
do not be surprised and also do not freak out.
That is how he runs. You know he reminds me of you
ever started an old car that has the crank or seen it at least or
whatever and like it takes a little while and it kind of or
like you have to hit the choke on your lawn mower.
It's almost like the beginning of the race is hitting the choke
on the lawn mower and he catches up after that.
Sierra Leone Forest lifetime. Yes, I I mow my own grass
people. Yes, Mike's wife, Grope, mows
their grass. She does.
She does not. That bad you know, fits the mold
though. Louis has race as a 2 year old,
undefeated as a three-year old. One 100 point race if you're
looking at old school things. One of the slop 1 dry track, one
100 point race. Hits the final fraction theory.
I mean all this stuff. All the he checks, all the boxes
he's absolutely must include. The only thing that he doesn't
have really is that post position draw.
That too has been very difficult to win out of.
All right, let's do one more here.
We're going to talk about the three here, Mystic Dan before we
talk about Dan Thistle, Mystic Dan here, Kenny Mcpeake trying
to do something very rare, give that Oaks Derby double.
Not alive. Kind of root for.
It Brian Hernandez aboard. I mean, they could do the whole
thing, man. It's going to be could be pretty
awesome. They won this race, yet they won
the Oaks yesterday. Busy.
Dan's been getting a lot of buzz.
A lot of buzz. He's almost become the buzz
horse, is he not? He's pretty close.
I mean he's he's one of the, he's one of them for.
Sure. Can you pull up the odds again
because I'm fascinated by this. He runs a full 4 and 1/4 lengths
behind just Steel. He's down to 15 to one, started
out 20. To one, he's 15.
To one, what is just steel at? Just steel is at 26 to 1.
I don't understand that at all. I don't understand that at all.
And so I Mystic Dan to me. Can he win the Derby?
Yes. Because the last 16 Derby's for
the longest odds on the board have won the Derby.
Yes. Do I think he's going to?
No. Do I want to bet him above under
20 to one? Absolutely not.
How's that? That's probably the best way to
play it is that I do not want a piece of that horse for less
than 20 to 1. And so look, connections make
sense. We watched it happen yesterday.
Academy Peak knows what the hell he's doing.
It's fine to say this horse does run in the southwest.
What I like about him Five lengths off essentially lead.
That's a good position to be in. The Derby in that race makes
this run late runs up the the up the rail.
BHA by the way, now has two of the very best rides this year.
That Oaks ride is super underrated as I've already
mentioned 1700 times already in today's show.
But that ride with Mystic Dan up the rail to cut the corner there
in that Southwest was just as good.
And so I I think people were overly excited about him in the
mud. I think there were other mudders
here. I think this class actually is
good on dry end and wet, but in my mind here, Mystic Dan is not
a winner. The guitar.
Let me ask you a question though.
Hernandez is going to have to do it two totally different ways if
he's going to. Do this.
That's correct, I trust. Him did that play into at all?
Zero. No, I He's fully, fully capable
of doing both. I think Brian's wildly
underrated. The the trumpet is saying.
He's won a Breeders' Cup race. I mean the the it's time to put
Brian in the proper strata and it's it's above where we
thinking. He's definitely in the second
one at worst. They're getting ready to come on
the track here for Race 3. Let's do that real.
Quick we are. We're getting close to.
We get these scratches out for us real quick.
Race three had a bunch of scratches.
We're going to scratch the six, the 5-6 and seven in this race.
Louis, where do we land on the three here?
This is. I'm actually against the
favorite here. The 11 is a one to two.
We have them in the pick three so that's fine.
We got the nine on top here. 5 to 1 right now for Todd
Pletcher, one on 1st asking at Gulfstream Park. 88 speed figure
first time out. The reason people are jumping to
mind frame on the outside was a one O 3 speed figure.
First time OK but 2 to one on a horse that's only run once was
really uncomfortable for me. I ended up putting them third.
Love the connections here between Pletcher and we saw as
and and so I I have that horse on top here with the 9:00 we'll
see if we can get another on top.
Winner here mind frame shows up and and and proves like we we
looking at another a new stud kind of coming on the.
Well, Mind Frame's three years old, right?
Was Triple Crown nominated? And so interested to see if this
horse shows up because we're in the mile Shoot, right?
Right now we're going mile 16, Mile 16.
Hey, Mike, is the Belmont a mile and 1/2 this year?
No, it's not. Oh, it's not, is it at Belmont
this year? It's not.
Oh, where is it? And it's over 10 furlongs like
it is today. It's So are they setting this
horse up? Maybe not for the Belmont, but
maybe for the Haskell or the Traverse or the Pennsylvania
Derby. That's we try to tell people, I
love this part of the show, man, this might be a future
superstar. You're right.
But think about that. We got a horse debuted at 88,
and he's 15 points behind 103 on that.
So I went nine on top here. I got the One car 2 show in the
second spot. Is he running?
He is 11 to one right now. 12 to one.
That's what I got. 11 to one on the board though.
Yeah, right. Yeah.
One at Tampa. Love the kick on this horse.
Went back, watched this race as well.
Chad Brown goes sprinter out at 29%.
OK, so that's what I was really looking at here.
The two of them with between him and Javier Castellano hit at
27%. I will admit.
Look, it's more likely that the nine and the eleven wins here
than the one, but 11 to one is a really nice price.
Might be a good place bet here. I like the but again, Louis
trusts the nine as what he's going to get out of the Nine
more than he likes the 11. But the 11 would not be shocked
if he wins. Could be a rising star in horse
racing. That's what we got to watch.
It's under card, no question. All right, let's get to our
tribute question. We're going to get to our first
break. We're going to get this on the
line. We're going to do all that
stuff. Louis, what is our tribute?
Question. All right, so the largest margin
of victory in the Kentucky Derby is 8 lengths.
Four horses have done that, none of them since the end of the
Second World War. Can you name any of them?
We will start with that. Probably not.
All right, we will ask Danissel who was at all those derbies.
He was at all. Those, Yeah.
One of them was the the 1914 Derby, which Issel was 15 years
old for. There it is.
All right, we'll be right back. This is the horse racing happy
hour. Live from Churchill Downs for
Kentucky Derby 150. It's the Horse racing happy hour
on ESPN 680 and one O 5 seven. Here are your hosts, Louie Robot
and Mike Andolfo. Hi, welcome back in Mike Andolfo
and I am alongside him. My name is Louie Robot.
You can find him at Big Mike Andolfo on Twitter.
Find our show at Horse Happy Hour.
I'm Louie Robot at Radio Louie. So, so thankful to be here for
historic Kentucky Derby 150. And I we want to welcome in our
favorite 150 year old. His name is Dan Issel.
Good morning, Sir. How are things in Denver?
Things are great watching the horse racing FanDuel and
hopefully cashing a few tickets. There you go.
Hike. Yeah, man.
All right. Well, you were at Keeneland
recently. How did Keeneland treat Dan
Issel? Keeneland always treats Danis
little spectacular. I like that he got the picture
of Mark Pope, man. He darned right.
He got the picture of Mark Pope. Do you know you went viral on
Twitter about your handshake with Mark Pope?
Yeah, and I'm guessing it wasn't me.
I'm guessing it was Pope I. Don't know, man.
I don't know. I'll take big ass over Pope.
Let's do that. All right.
There you go. Well, he is.
Dan Thistle joins us here on the Horse Racing gappy hour on Derby
day. Race three is off here.
Dan, you know outside of the Derby, Is there a race on Derby
day that you always look forward to?
Well, sure, I always I love grass racing.
We might be, we might be seeing the best 3 year old in the
country in this third race at at Churchill right now.
This this Constitution cult is awesome.
Yeah. We were just talking about mind
frame, yeah. It's really good right now we.
Were thinking Dan, you know and just trying to figure out like
what his future trajectory might be.
Do you think he, you know, this is the kind of like a traverse,
maybe Pennsylvania Derby kind of horse?
Well I absolutely, I mean we'll we'll we'll have to see how he
progresses. But I mean, his first race was
spectacular and, you know, I, I don't know, what do you think
about the Belmont with this horse?
Well, especially since it's 10 furlongs at Saratoga, right?
Yeah, yeah. And so we'll, we'll have to see.
You know, I've seen a lot of maidens that were spectacular
for the time out that didn't get it done.
So we'll have to see what happened.
Well, I think he's about to win by about 20 here, so we talking
about this guy for a while. Holy.
Holy crap. Whoa.
He's. Jeez, OP.
Man, there we go. Well, the the first pick three
in the book is hit, but my I did not have him on top.
I was going to try to beat him today and that was a massive
mistake. So there you go, mind frame.
We might be. Pulling away that is, let's see,
123456. He won by 7.
So there you go. All right Dan Thistle with us
here how the horse racing happy hour that race is done.
You know Dan, every year this this Derby City distaff turns
into a nicer and nicer race. It is Race 6 today, the grade
one, 1,000,000 bucks here, Dan, they're they're lowering the
purses again here at Churchill Downs.
I really wish they would stop doing that.
Yeah, I was surprised what the that the race that Idiomatic won
yesterday was $1,000,000 purse too wasn't.
It for sure, yeah. You know what we didn't get to
ask you about yesterday? Thorpedo.
Anna wired a wire. And I was saying earlier in the
show, Dan, you know, sometimes jockeys don't get the credit for
getting the lead, slowing the pace down on the back and then,
you know, saving their horse or the stretch like Brian Hernandez
junior did yesterday. Yeah, yeah, I mean it was it was
some kind of impressive, I believe this idiot texted a
friend of mine who said that was the most over bet horse in the
oaks yesterday. She looked like she was one to
two coming down. This, Yeah.
You and I disagreed on the race, but we didn't agree.
We agreed that she wasn't going to win it, and then she just ran
away with it. So there you.
Go. She looks very impressive.
Very, very impressive. She actually ran a better number
than idiomatic. How about that, Dan?
But of course idiomatic. First off the bench there.
When you watch a horse, like idiomatic, you were there at
Santa Anita when she went to the distaff, you see her winning the
LA Troy. And yesterday, man, we say on
this show fall in love with the Phillies and mares because they
run longer. Idiomatic.
She's moving into that conversation.
Huh. Yeah, no question.
And you know, great, great. That judgment brought her back
for another year. They they could have easily
shipped her off to the to the breeding shed.
But good for them for keeping her in.
And I don't know Louis, she seems to you know whether she's
on the lead or Yep she showed yesterday she doesn't have to be
on the lead and and still ran a spectacular race.
So I'd I'd like to see her take on the boys at some point.
Wow. How about that?
Yeah. Dan Issel with us.
Yeah, she she's, I mean, synthetic slob dry dirt any and
she's wins. She's the winner.
It's unbelievable. Nine of her last 10 now.
Unreal. I think we got a better chance
though, seeing seeing Torpedo Anna take on the boys.
Maybe we'll talk about her going the Preakness.
Maybe. Yeah, that kind of got shot down
yesterday by Kenny Mcpeak, but 10 for a long Belmont?
I don't know why that's out of the question.
Would you try Thorpedo Anna there?
Would you scare toward the Acorn?
No, I I wouldn't. I might try.
You know, you've got Baffert, who's sitting there loaded for
the Freakness, and I wouldn't. There's no way I'd I'd run her
in the Belmont, but I'd I'd keep her in those.
I'd keep her in those grade ones, especially as a three-year
old. Now if you want to take on the
Colts, you know, do it. Do it next year.
But what? Why?
Why take them on now when you've got all these grade ones for
three-year old Phillies that are worth a lot of money?
Yeah, fair enough. Dan Nestle with us.
Of course. Here Horse racing happy hour.
Mike Andelfo next to me. I'm Louis Rebel.
Thanks for hanging out with us live section 322 here at
Churchill Downs. Dan, let's handicap.
Buddy. You and I get to used to get to
do this a lot on Fridays and I have by the way, I think you'd
be happy to know we've kept that tradition going on the 10 to new
show over at 680 Got those handicapping sessions every
Friday. All of our horse racing talk by
the way presented by our friends at the Kentucky HBPAKYHBP a.com.
Get over there today. You can check out those
workouts, the videos and all the articles by our friend Jenny
Reese over there as well. KYHBP a.com We're going.
To talk about race 6. Let's go to race 6.
Race 6 is what we're going to do 7 Furlong One Turn Sprint.
The Derby City Distaff Stakes presented by Kendall Jackson
Winery. Of course my favorite man, this
is a grade one and it's $1,000,000 purse for Phillies
and various 4 year olds and up. Dan, where did you land on this
one? You know, I I landed on the 10,
you know, I know that. Yeah, I know that Albastar beat
her last time, but that that first weekend at Keeneland it
was impossible to close from more than, you know, three or
four. There was one point where there
were three, like through the through the third weekend or
there were like three horses that that came from off the face
at the head of the stretch. Sierra Leone was one in the
Breeders Cup. I forget who the second one was
but our Philly Saint Benedict's prep was the third one.
And so I I think that I think she turns the tables.
I'll tell you, don't sleep on red carpet ready because she
absolutely loves Churchill and she's and she's going to be up
close. I think she's 3 for 3A lifetime
at Churchill. So you know, if you're doing, if
you're doing horizontal wagering, don't.
Don't leave her out. Yeah, Dan and I have the exact
same two horses. On top it's get out front, see
out front so far is Baba going to be able to?
You know you say that the first race was not it was, it was it
was stalk in the first race. But yes, getting out front is
totally OK. I think Baba is going to be
close enough. 2 lengths, that kind of thing.
Dan right about two lengths off that lead red carpet ready
though is ready to set the pace if she wants to.
And I agree with Dan, 3 for three lifetime is impossible to
overlook. You get Rusty Arnold here.
You get Luis Saez though that's an absolute must use as well.
Dan. My long shot in here is 3
witches on the inside. Flavia and Pratt.
Mike McCarthy did win that Santa Monica last out once in a while.
Dan. I just trust that California
speed and sometimes you know coming out of Santa Anita they
really do translate audit Churchill Downs.
You get 3 witches. Much shot here.
Because if you look at Keeneland now, I know Keeneland's
different than Churchill. There hasn't been enough, hasn't
been enough races. But at Keeneland, Louie the the
California horses did not perform very.
And so I I'm, I'm going to Chuck her in this race.
I have Elvis star third in that one did win the Madison as Dan
mentioned ahead of Volvo and red carpet ready.
But I I agree with Dan. I think the tables can be turned
here. I also do agree Red Carpet Ready
loves this course. All right, we did not answer our
trivia question. Oh, Dan, we asked.
You were at the 1940 nineteen, excuse me, 1914 Kentucky Derby.
Do you remember the winner of that race by 8 lengths?
I I don't. I remember the burger who was
exceptional that day and the and the mint juleps were very tasty.
There you go. I can't.
I can't. You know, I'm 75.
I can't recall the winner. There you go, Old Rosebud in
1914, Johnstown in 1939, and two horses everyone has heard of
World Away in 1941 and Assault in 1946.
All four of those horses won the Kentucky Derby by 8 lengths at
the time. Of course, the the race is being
running at a mile and 1/2 so that you had more chance to to
run away with the race. There you go.
Yeah, All right. Well, let's go to the 7th race.
There you go. The seventh race is we're going
to get on that turf course. It played like Louis said,
played very, very, very as the sun just shines down on.
What is that light? What is that?
Dan, do you know what this is? This, this sun thing?
We don't get that here very, very much the last two days.
Go ahead, Dan. I was just going to say the sun
has come out at Churchill. That's terrific.
That is horrific. Actually, yeah, we'll take a lot
of sun for like 3 hours here. Let's go.
The law. Are there supposed to be?
Is there supposed to be rain later on this afternoon?
Maybe it's going to be a pop up. It's it's like a hit miss.
They don't know. Very Derby.
Sort of like 20 minutes. It's a coin flip kind of deal.
They're not sure if it's going to hit here or not, so we'll
have to just kind of see. Yeah, So some sun right now
would be nice. Yeah, get this thing dried out a
little bit. You know, they're still calling
the track muddy, but it's it ain't muddy, it ain't muddy.
It's good at, good at worse. Closer, Closer to fast ham.
So the the the the seventh race is the one mile longing
Churchill Distaff Mile. It's a grade two 750,000 mile
purse. Again we will be doing a two
turn mile here on the turf. Louis, let's start with here.
Yeah, I landed on the the Honey Fox winner in Chile Flag Chad
and Irad can't beat them. Irad did me good yesterday so
I'm going to stick with them in this spot as well.
Does have late kick is probably going to have to do what they
what what she did in the in the honey fox here which is probably
about four legs off the lead going into that final turn make
the late kick after that so I'll go chili flag on top here.
The three of the six is Della Hay.
Think this horse is really interesting at 8:00 to 1:00.
It's the other Chad Brown. How often do we get burned by
the other Chad Brown? Pretty darn often Three straight
wins after getting necked out in its first race as a three-year
old last year in February. We took a ton of time off, ran
again in November, came back in a maiden special down there at
aqueducts. Runs over that course, goes down
to Gulfstream. Wins over that course.
Goes to the fairgrounds, wins over that course.
Makes me think that this horse can win here.
Three straight wins as well. And I love the 8 to 1 price.
Chad there, Dan. Yeah, I'm going to go with the
11 horse Capisce. That how you say it, you you
look at the Chad's numbers with these kinds of horses and look
who this Philly ran against. I mean, you look at her European
form spiral how you say it, Heredity, Nashua and all of
those Phillies would be, would be one to five in this spot.
So I'm going to take a chance on La Franco de Torre.
That's my third pick. It's almost like Dan and I are
just picking up where the other leaves off.
How about that? I mean you.
Scott taught both you all really well.
So we're going to move on then to the eighth race here, which
is the pat day mile. This is a race that we thought
was going to set up to be very, very strong.
I mean, it's not bad. It just didn't quite shake out
the way it gets. I thought it'd be.
I agree. This is a great two 600,000.
And by the way, I think it's a harbinger for the fact that the
Preakness field might be really good this year.
And we've talked about that for a couple of weeks.
I think a lot of those horses that we thought would be in the
pat day mile and just point to Baltimore.
Dan, who did you like in the PAT day?
I I I like Nash. You know you look down there.
He he didn't he didn't run very well on a sloppy track got beat
well. He only got beat a couple
lengths by Tuscan. Sky track Phantom was a phantom
early and fairgrounds and he and he ran close to that horse.
His last race I thought was was pretty good, so I'm going to go
with the 12 Nash. Nash is best speed figure by the
way was that. That's correct.
It is maiden win that blew all of us away.
We all thought, like we just saw with this last horse that he was
going to be the next thing, Dan, and obviously hasn't gone that
way. But maybe they find out with him
in a similar way. Gosh, who won the Indiana Derby
last year? I'm totally.
Yeah, yeah. But that Chad, you know, Chad or
excuse me, Brad Cox figured out that that was a horse that
wanted to go mile 16th and shorter.
Right. And so Nash might be that kind
of horse. Maybe we do see him in the end
of the Indiana Derby. That might be the Indiana Derby
horse for the Cox Barn this year.
I have top Connor on top here. Ran and broke his maiden in that
one turn mile shoot at Gulfstream Park to open his
career. Tried him in the Bluegrass.
Didn't run poorly only lost by 8 lengths but in his first time
going two turns. I think getting back to the mile
distance here will be really really positive for top Connor.
Other horses to fill out that spot.
Sees the Gray is the five, eight to one here I get Torres and you
get the coach. Here was another horse that
coming out of that Bluegrass before that though did win in a
mile and a 16th at Oak Lawn High level optional claimer tried him
in the Ruby. Ran 3rd so got some Derby points
there. Ran them back quickly in that
Bluegrass to try to get points at Keeneland.
Didn't like Keeneland? I you know, Dan, it's
interesting. The Phillies seem to be OK
moving dirt from Keeneland to Churchill, but we don't see that
on the cold side. Isn't that bizarre?
It it, it, it really is. And I again, it got fairer,
fairer as the as the meat went on.
But early on I mean you had if you weren't 1st at the head of
the stretch you would not win it.
So it was amazing, yeah. By the way, long shot, Long long
shot play on that Who day, The seven Brian Hernandez junior
aboard. He might just be in the zone
right now. That's a horse that's going to
be second off the layoff here already, one for one at
Churchill Downs over that mile course as well.
All right, we're going to go now.
Let's talk about a couple Derby horses.
Let's get into the Derby with Dan now, yes?
Right, we left off. We're going to go through.
Dan, I want to get your overall pick here, but eventually, but
we're going to just talk about the four, the five and the six
very quick, the four being catching Freedom, who of course
won the Louisiana Derby. Not a lot of knocks here.
I'll actually let Dan go first. Brad Cox is his guy.
Yeah, you know, I'd. I'd.
I'd like to see this, this Colt win.
The Albaugh family have put a lot of money in, but I but my
pick in the Derby is Forte. Did he drop the mic and leave?
That would be great. Oh man, What do you think of
this horse? Do you think he's got a shot
though? I want to.
I want to make fun of Mike some more.
Go ahead, go make fun. Four day.
Did I make it to the gate? We did.
We did eliminate Mage from our pick six ticket.
I knew it was coming up. He.
Made us go too wide against Cody's wish.
It was great. I know.
It's coming up. It's all right.
It's all right. You know what?
The fact that Dan Nelson's making fun of me.
Oh, that's a good moment, man. That's a good moment.
So. Do you think he's got a shot
today, Dan? Where would you put him like
like top five, top 10? Where do you have him for his as
far as having a shot to win here?
Yeah I I would put him. I would put him in the top five
you know the the the the race that he ran in the Louisiana
Derby. I thought something was wrong
with me. He dropped he dropped back to
dead last that that certainly isn't his running style.
I mean he's not going to be on the lead but he's usually mid
pack in in all of his races prior to that and the way that
he ran now you know the question is what did he beat.
I I don't I'm not a big honor Marie fan and Huskin gold.
I he didn't beat much there, but in only the 4th start of his
life he was within a length and a quarter of Sierra Leone who's
going to be second choice in the Derby.
So yeah, I'd. I'd put him in the top five
there. You.
Go. I agree.
I agree. He's a top five type of horse
for sure. By the way connections and and
if you look at this horse sometimes we talk about every
other types. I think he's got excuses for
every other. So when he runs, you know that
second time out in the optional claim, it's first time going two
turns that he wins in the Smarty Jones, he runs back at the Risen
star. It's sloppy and he only loses
by, like Dan mentioned, a couple of lengths there, you know.
And then he comes back in Louisiana.
Derby has a terrible start, has to go the furthest he's ever
gone his career and he wins. So Dan the the the biggest thing
about him for me is in the final fractions theory, he's way at
the top. He's like he's 2nd and he's
already run a mile in 360. He showed he can go the
distance. Yeah.
No, the the mile and quarter won't be a problem.
Yeah, there you go, I. Think it's top 10 for me.
I don't know who's top five. OK, there you go.
Yeah, I think we should toss them out our pick six.
Alright. I have not doing a pick 6.
That was the joke, right? The fifth horse is catalytic.
Jose Ortiz aboard Saffy. We had Saffy on the air a little
bit talking during. This week I wish he were a
little more talkative because he's fun.
He's fun. He's fun.
He gets. We're having fun with him.
I think that's probably right. The phone.
The phone makes it hard. For you, it does make it his.
Yeah, this horse came in second in his last two races and the
Florida Derby and an optional claiming race as well.
Really, he's only got 1 stakes race.
He's really lightly race. You know what's interesting
about him is I, Mike, if you think any other horse was in the
Florida Derby with fierceness, does do they beat fierceness?
Not that day, man. Not that day.
So what if we take fierceness out of that race and we just
have catalytic beating Grand MO the First, who also qualified
for the Derby? Do we think of him differently?
Obviously we do. Right.
A little bit maybe to 25 to 1 or 20.
Here's the case I'll make for him.
I don't think he wins. I want to be clear.
I don't think he hits the board. Here's the case I'll make,
though. He ran that back after three
weeks. He was sick.
They had to scratch him out of a race for a second race at
Gulfstream Park. They ship him to Tampa.
He wins off the layoff October to March.
He comes back and they and staff, he's like, he's in good
shape. Why don't we try the Florida
Derby? And he beats every horse in that
that field not named fierceness, OK.
It's kind of like when Flight Line won the Pacific Classic and
the other horses didn't know that he was in the race, right,
You know? And so I wonder.
In a different year, if we're talking about catalytic in a
really different way because it's still a 90 speed figure,
it's still those things. I just really wonder if if it's
that again, like I said, I do not expect him to do anything
today of of substance, but it's still Jose Ortiz and still he's
going to get a good ride, right, those sorts of things.
I just, I think he's a little early.
Again, if he's going to develop, it'll be Traverse, Pennsylvania
Derby that kind of year. What do you think, Dan?
I I think the only reason this. Horse is in the race is so his
connections can get a box for the 150th Derby.
I give this for absolutely no shot.
None Miss Bircham with some. More Dan.
I love it. Who?
What's? Worse that horse's chances in
the Derby or Mike's handicapping?
No, my handicapping is good. I actually agree with that.
I agree with that. There you go.
All right, let's move on to the six horse.
This is it's this. Particular day that he stinks.
The six horses just deal. This is a.
Justify the justifies have been unbelievable.
Right? So.
And we got a demand man. Dewayne Lucas here with Ken
Asmussen aboard. He's Asmussen.
That's a kid. Yeah, just steal here.
What do we think about Just steal, Dan.
Oh, go to Dan. Yeah, yeah.
Go. Dan.
Dan, you. Know.
I don't. I don't know.
That that last race, you know, if if Muth was in this race,
would he be the favorite or second or third at worst, I
don't think he's. The favorite, though?
Second or third. At worst, though, he's top.
Three. Yeah, I agree, Danny.
Top three and and. You know Wayne's horses?
He he runs them into shape. I mean, you know this, this
horse has made four starts already this year.
He's made eleven starts already in in his career.
If. If you.
Look at some of his other races, like The Rebel, the Southwest,
The The The Smarty, The Smarty Jones.
I don't think he'd give him much of a chance.
But then look at that last race. Where did that come from?
He only got beat 2 lengths by move, and he was 32 to 1.
So this would be a great story. I'd.
I'd love to see this octogenarian win who win the
Kentucky Derby with, you know, a kid that's just getting his
writing career started. But I'm.
I'm using five horses in my horizon that's and just steel is
not one of them. Got it.
Yeah. I think Dan's point about.
How well he ran in the Arkansas Derby isn't worth.
We shouldn't overlook it if if Mage can win the Derby running
well in the Florida Derby last year and is working toward being
better, that just Steel may have done exactly the same thing in
the Arkansas Derby this year. I'm I'm more nervous, Dan, about
trusting Keith Asmussen in a first Derby right at that age at
this stage. All those things.
I talked to him. He's a very nice guy like all
those things. But I just.
I wonder if the stage for some of these guys is just a little
bit too much and that's all I would push back on.
Obviously the coach knows I'm not worried about Lucas a good
guy really doing here like 0% son of justify.
Obviously all those connections make sense.
But no, I I'm with Dan here not a likely winner for me but I
think just steals in my top 10. How about that?
Yeah, I think he's in my top 10 most likely winners.
All right. The first stakes race is getting
ready to. Go again.
This is the Knicks. Knicks go overnight.
If you were listening to us earlier, we gave out the the you
gave the best actor. Is that correct?
Yeah, I have Best Actor and Oscar.
Eclipse 1/2 here, Dan in Race 4. Hate to make you flip back, but
do you have a pick for Race 4 for our listeners?
You know what I. Thought this was the most
competitive race on the card. Looks very fun and.
And I know. That best actor.
But look at the horses in this race that have to be on the lead
to run a good race. I mean, there is speed after
speed after speed horses in this race.
You know, obviously it's 7 to 5, Brad figures to win it.
But I thought. I thought this was the most
competitive race on the card and I spread deep on my pick five
ticket I. Like I'm I'm liking.
A little bit of a price here with the 8 horse Strava.
Let's see what happens. Interesting one if Dan's right
in, the pace falls. Apart out front look for
Dennington, the two possibly on to pick up the pieces here 8 to
1. Brian Hernandez, Junior OK, so
so Dan, you mentioned you had. Five horses that you're using?
Yeah. What are your?
Who are your 5 Derby? Horses.
My fight well. First of all, you know if
fierceness gets a clean trip and everything goes his way,
everybody else is running for second.
How do you how do you how do you trust the horse in a 20 horse
field that needs everything to go perfectly for him to win and
and so you know based on that I I use I use both of Cox's horses
I used Sierra Leone and my long shot is the other Chad brown
horse who domestic product won the.
Tampa Derby, yeah, yeah. Those are my horses lot.
Of. Lot of the best product talk,
Daniel. The final fractions.
He's the best. Horse standing The best late
kick of any Kentucky Derby starter.
How about that right? The horses are getting ready
and. Listening.
To people who were there, he might be training as well as any
horse coming in the I mean, he walked a couple days ago.
He walked off the track on his hind legs.
He's he's feeling good for sure. Imagine you you can't get.
Tyler So you have to downgrade to Irad, Ortiz Junior.
How about that? All right, fourth race horses
are coming. On the track, they just played
the the call to post. Louis, let's get to our trivia
question. Well, let's let's have a, let's
have Dan. A kind of, you know, walk us
through here, Derby 150. You were at Derby 100.
Yep. That's not a.
That's not a. That's not a joke.
Good. You really was?
No. No, he was.
He was really there. And so I it's it's certainly,
it's certainly cool that we get to be here for this one and we
get to talk to to Dan who was there for the 100th.
And oh, I get it, Yeah, yeah, for sure.
We'll we'll figure something out.
We'll get the out for something this year.
But you know just the Derby in general and you know we always
joke on this show with you, Dan. We have a great time about the
Churchill Keeneland rivalry. That doesn't actually exist or
whatever, but Derby Day itself, as far as, you know, just the
the calendar, the race card today and yesterday, you know,
kind of like being a Spring Breeders' Cup on the opposite
side of the schedule, you know, Do you, How much do you look
forward to these two days of racing?
Immensely. I you know, I've, I've said
before if you give me my choice of attending every sporting
event and I I don't know how many derbies I've been to.
But I know my first one was in 1968 when I was a junior at at
at UK and I'm going to guess I've been to 25 derbies maybe
more. And even even with that, if you
gave me my choice of any sporting event that I could
attend, Super Bowl, World Series, NBA championship, the
Masters, I would pick these two days to be at Churchill Downs.
There you go. He's Dan Thistle.
He's out there in Denver. Doing the darn thing.
