Full Transcript
Let's do something a little happier and we'll bring in our
guy. His name is Kevin Kilray is that
trust your luck on Twitter. You can find his stuff at first
gensports.com as well. And I, I got to say, Kevin, you
did a good job for us because Kevin, the other day, Dan wrote
a piece on the Jim Dandy last weekend and Irad's ride during
that race and then he took to Twitter and I could think of
nothing. It's just an interesting way to
choose how to spend your time, Kevin.
I try to, I try to stay away from any sort of kerfuffle
sweater and I don't. And I don't think it got it got
dirty out there. But it's just nice to nice to
put some different opinions of, you know, when everybody was
just just trashing Ira, I mean. He's the easy guy to hate.
But don't we love having these guys in our sport that that we
like to hate? You know, I mean, it's just sort
of a great part of so many sports and I think people forget
about that. And in horse racing sometimes
that, yeah, we might hate it, but that doesn't mean that he's
not one of the best. And obviously we can see that
with IRAD with all the mounts that he gets.
But yeah, that was fun to write about them.
Think about that piece, you know, that was tough.
Obviously we were looking at Saudi crown to get the win
there. But the Stewards, you know, that
was that was probably the worst situation where it just like,
seemed like such an obvious DQ textbook DQ.
What You know, how could this go any other way?
And then, boom, they leave them up.
It was a weird deal from from every angle it was.
It was villains on every side. Are we losing Kevin or I've got
one I think is worse and I want to ask you about this on a
Thursday last Thursday and and I I've got to tell you that I have
a personal interest in this because our friend Ed Musselman
gave a gave out a 20 to one shot as the as his bed of the day at
Saratoga and and Jose Ortiz. Comes out in the stretch and the
horse that I had in a pick four at 20 to one, his legs actually
went between the hind legs of Jose's horse and and they did
not disqualify. Everybody on the set at Fox was
saying, oh, this horse is coming down, this horse is the stewards
did not disqualify him. And then.
And then they gave Ortiz 3 days. How can you give a rider 3 days
and not disqualify the horse? That's it.
Yeah. He should get more than three
days. He's had a bunch of yeah, that
was a horrible situation. He had another one with the
swore. I think it was swore who was
coming for a clothes and it set up for that that Faraday horse,
that Chad Brown horse to get it up on the rail where Jose just
gives a left-hander and and cleans his horse to the right
and knocks swore right before the wire.
You know it's just so obvious, so blatant and that that one
cost me money, right. You know so and you get mad when
it costs you money even more. But but I do love these Ortiz
brothers. I mean they're competitors.
Every time I've talked to them they've been they've been nice
guys but just just in passing the right.
But they do they. To fire up the fan, which we
need more of, which is good because we want to be passionate
about this sport, Kevin Kilroy with us here on Isle and Louie
at Trust Your Luck on Twitter. We'll get in now into the
Kentucky Downs Preview Day at Ellis Park presented by our
friends at the Kentucky HBPA. Hey, through an agreement with
Kentucky Downs several $1,000,000 is transferred every
year in association with purse money to Ellis Park's purse
account. Additional money generated
through the Kentucky Downs HHR operations in Franklin and
Bowling Green go to Ellis Park in the form of Development Fund
person supplements. And so other than that Stephen
Park that Stephen Foster weekend at Ellis Park.
This is the richest weekend of the meet.
Three $200,000 stakes on Saturday, two $200,000 stakes on
Sunday, a $250,000 and $300,000 stakes as well on Sunday.
Winner of each stakes receives an automatic fees paid spot in
those races at Kentucky down. So we want to thank all of our
friends at the Kentucky HBPA for all of that.
The purses tomorrow. Dan, Are you ready?
Yes, 74,070 thousand, 74,070 thousand, 74,070 thousand,
200,200 thousand 200,000. That's at Ellis Park in August.
The pee patch. The old pee patch, Man.
How about that, Kevin? Nice infusion of money.
And with that, of course, comes better horses.
We go to race seven, part of that $3.
All turf. Pick three.
Do you like these kinds of wagers, Kevin?
I do, I do, I do, I do. I like a high base bet to it.
I think it, you know, weeds out all sorts of arbitrage out
there. All sorts of CA, W's, computers
who are putting their bets together and able to to use
their computer power to to tackle them all sorts of
different ways. So you got to have a strong
opinion, you got to be able to handicap and you need to get
paid on them. So I do like those.
All right. So this does start a $3 all turf
pick three. This will be my play this
weekend. Kevin and I'll have plays up at
first gensports.com that you can check out.
Five and a half furlongs here, $200,000 as I mentioned, this is
for Phillies and mayors 3 and up.
I'll go to you first, Kevin. We get base storming here at
8:00 to 5:00, horses over 4 this year.
Always tough in a turf Sprint to determine who's going to win.
Yeah, over 4 this year. I mean, of course, you're
running second to caravel. That brings up, you know.
Will will cause a lot of money to go to base Storm, but I think
this is a very short price. I don't think it's going to be 8
to 5 on base Storm. There's a lot of ways you can go
in here. The the two most likely winners
to me are #2, love and money. And then if you look on the
outside you got to quarry a comet.
Paolo Lobo winning 35%, Cerrito Beau with love and money winning
all over the country left and right and they both took a nice
step forward in that in their last races they they look live
and here for a price I think #4 linguistic 20 to one.
You can see the running line 2 back finished three quarter
links behind coffee maker who was ultra impressive yesterday
at Saratoga I think had a 97 buyer with that wed even though
it wasn't a stake race. So I think.
I think is one that I want to to to consider heavily.
We can get that sort of price to Dan.
What'd you land? Here I landed on one of the
horses that Kevin just mentioned, the 10 Quadria
comment. I you know, you're absolutely
right. If you look at the Bay Storm's
lines, she's been running against some awfully nice
Phillies. But having said that, she hadn't
won a race for a year. And I think they figured out
this. I I think they figured out this
Philly on the outside. I mean she had all of those
races on the Kitty litter up at turf paradise.
Excuse me, Turfway. Turfway.
But then the last time, the first time that not the first
time, but Joe Talamo took her off the pace and she closed like
a freight train. I I really like the 10 quandary
comment. There's a bunch of very live
horses in here including super munnings.
The seven hasn't been mentioned yet.
Chris Landeros in the irons for his fatherinlaw.
Ian Wilkes, 87 buyer last time out wins over the turf course.
They're going 5 1/2 furlongs in one and three and change.
Dan, they ran 5 furlongs in 57 and change.
How about that? So super fast last time out
could be a horse like that that jumps up.
I think a lot of horses have a serious shot here in that
Kentucky Downs preview Mint Ladies turf Sprint.
We go to Race 8. It is you.
Can give me an idea there though, Louis, We got to I got
to do a piece here on soninlaws writing for their fatherinlaws.
How does that work out? Is that a successful
combination? Right.
I could never write for my fatherinlaw, I'll tell you that.
I told you not to marry that idiot.
You're out of the will. All right, Kentucky Downs
preview is the Dueling Grounds Derby is race eight, $200,000.
Here we're going a mile and an eighth on the turf.
As I mentioned, it is a Derby, so it's for three-year olds.
And so we get to see some names in here, Dan, that we've seen
before. Wadsworth is the favorite here
at 8:00 to 5:00, I think a deserving favorite here.
Do you like him here enough to to kind of hold your nose and
single, or do you think there's some other place here?
Now I I think I, I I thought this was the of the three races
at Ellis. I thought this was the most wide
open. Now you know certainly Wadsworth
deserves to be the favorite. It's it's Godolphin.
It's Brad Cox and four on. But you know, if you look at the
speed figures in this race, this is a pretty, pretty closely
matched bunch. And so.
I'm going to because I'm only playing two horses in the in the
prior race. I'm going to, I'm going to
spread pretty good here. Which horses are you playing in
Race 7, then, Dan? Just so people know.
Oh. OK, I'm sorry.
It I'm, I'm going to use the three for Todd Fletcher and
Starlight Racing and I'm going to use the tall boy I like.
I like his shot. So this is race eight.
You're using hidden path. And and I like the horse on the
bottom. I think that's another Pletcher
horse. He's only made two starts in
this country coming from Maidan and I I give him a little
chance. James Graham always seems to
jump up and and win one somehow. So those are the horses I'm
using in addition, in addition to Watchworth.
Got it. Kevin, what's kind of your
philosophy here? Because Wadsworth is going to
get a bunch of money here. Those connections obviously
hasn't really done anything wrong.
His last two races between the race and the Caesars at
Horseshoe and then he comes back to the American Derby during
that Churchill part of the meet at Ellis, you would you use a
Wattsworth with other horses? Or if you think that he's
beatable, do you avoid using him in longer tickets?
Oh, if I think he's beatable, I just avoid them all together.
There's, there's, you know, unless.
Unless I have like if linguistic, if that was a single
for me, right. If I if I was just like putting
put it all in on that sort of 20 to one.
I might you know get defensive and use Wodsworth just to stay
alive because I want to realize that value I got from that first
leg. But, but in general, if if if
I'm going to use a short price favorite, then I'm going to I'm
just going to single that one and not not waste my money with
any of the other ones because. You know, the probability says
that if you like that horse and so there's the market, then
there's a good shot that that that horse is going to get it
done here outside of Wadworth, yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
So I'm, I'm, I'm fading Wadsworth.
I think it's drawn poorly out here.
There's a ton of speed. I do like that 12 that Dan was
mentioning, mentioning Shirar half to Lady Eli, busy Caroline
as well. Lincoln Hwy. #5 seems live
Worthington could finally realize the potential act of
fool Larry Ravelli. But #7 Anglophile is the one
that I really want to to make my top pick.
Brian Lynch. Becky Cannon.
They've been they've been the team.
No, no, no. Offense to the Soninlaw there,
but Brian Lynch and Dec in Canada, they didn't get it done.
That was a good run. Last last out, step forward in a
nice way. I think we've got more to be
seen here and it says blinkers on on my DRF, but as far as I
know after a win you can't add or change equipment.
Do you guys have blinkers on on your on your PP's for #7 for for
Anglophile? I do, yeah.
Yeah. Am I am I wrong that you can't
change, make equipment change after a win?
Or is that? I I think you have to I I think
you have to get the Stewarts okay now I I think what you I
think what it is Kevin is that if the horse lose or lost the
last race you can make the changes and just tell the
Stewarts that's what you're doing but if if but I I don't
think you they can keep you from doing it but you have to get
there okay to do it. Okay, I was wondering about
that. Yeah, I think we'll get a good
price there. I think the pace is going to set
up. We've got a lot of a lot of
these three-year olds who should be forward and trying to take
him get to wire. So I think that was set up
nicely. Good trip there, Dickie Cannon.
He's just been riding like a like a maniac, doing it so well
on the turf specifically. All right, there you go.
We'll move on to the final race. On the card, we're talking Ellis
Park with Kevin Kilroy at Trust Your Luck on Twitter.
We're talking Kentucky Downs Preview Day three big stakes at
the end of the card, all part of a three dollar pick 3.
Kevin and I will have our picks up at First gensports.com in the
coming hours and so you can check those out as well.
Final race of the day is the preview for the Mid millions,
and there's an S on that race now Dan, because it used to be
$1,000,000 but it looks like they're inching closer to 2
million. Bucks for this race when we get
to Kentucky Downs 200K, the old one turn turf course down there
at Kentucky Downs. It's more of a Sprint.
Dan if you will, 3 year olds enough going to mile at at Ellis
Park so they'll start at the finish line there and end at the
finish line on their one mile turf course.
Kevin, we'll go to you first here a fun field here.
Some names that people probably know if they follow Hosiers in
this race. Great Fable is in this race, we
get 4 to Ventura as the favorite here for Jonathan Thomas, who
has a bunch of good runners in this race, has Flora Giroux
aboard to me. I think he's the class tier.
He's won back-to-back in at least a reasonably good company
both in Indiana and then he goes up to Canterbury and wins on
their big day. Where did you land in this one?
You know it's another field with that should have a lot of speed
especially these outside horses should be sending.
I like these inside horses in here in Minnesota ready coming
out for Neil Pesson, Trafalgar. I think it's interesting coming
late and then the big dreaming top pick in here is big
dreaming. Wayne Catalano's 6 year old
horse fully intact horse and he's a big big dude.
I always am a sucker for the Wayne Catalano, Frank Calabrese
combination they used to just to take care of business up in our.
Lington Park when I was young in my horse playing days and I
would just see these guys with these Italian last names coming
out and winning all the races. I thought it was pretty pretty
kick ass. So Big Dreaming is quite a, you
know a quality runner just hasn't always been able to keep
coming back on the afternoons. Has three wins out of four tries
at the assistance one win over Ellis Park and a nice bullet
workout. They're coming into this, so I
really like that one. And the Minnesota Ready just ran
a zero on 3rd graph and that was a speed favoring.
Today, so you know Ellis Park as we've talked about sometimes
that main tracking really carries speed, so you want to be
a little bit weary of that, but that's that's heads and tails
above the the rest of the field in terms of that third raft
figure. So I am also very interested in
Minnesota. Ready.
Yeah. Dan, where'd you land here?
You know what's interesting to me is that Floran Giroux is on
all three morning line favorites in this in this sequence and I
think we can beat all three of them.
I I my my topic is is Heaven St.?
He's coming out of New York first time in the Mike Maker
barn. I love Torres on him as a
jockey. I'm going to play a few other
horses in here, but I'm going to put Heaven St. on my ticket.
There you go. There are some cool stories to
in these races tomorrow. For example, I know he's trained
by Brad Cox, but going good in the first race that we talked
about in this sequence at race seven was bred for 7500 bucks
and he's closing in on 400K at lifetime earnings.
Yeah, that's that. That's Richard Klein's horse.
Yes, it is. Yeah.
Klein family and it's kind of a cool thing that we're starting
to see, especially on the turf side where we're getting more
and more of these kinds of horses where people haven't
quite given up on them and they get into these kinds of races.
And because the purses are going up and you know we have the
opportunities of things like like we mentioned with Kentucky
Downs, more chances to run in these races.
Again, Kevin is presented by our friends at the Kentucky HBPA
huge day and huge weekend at Ellis Park tomorrow and Sunday.
You get that Kentucky Downs Preview Day tomorrow and then
four stakes on Saturday including the Great three pucker
up for $300,000 on August 6th. Make sure you check those out.
And again, I cannot stress enough, Kevin and I are totally
in lockstep on this. That $3 base makes that pick
three really interesting. At the end of the card there, I
think I'd be remiss not to ask you who you were in the Whitney
is. Geez, you know, it's always hard
when you get emotional about these, these horses.
Cody's wish. But what a great opportunity to
take a swing against. What about Dale Romans Giant
game. I think that's a giant game.
Could be sneaky in there. Luis Faya's riding and it's got
some early speed. I think he stepped forward in a
good way once he started signing the front and he could could,
you know, just run them off their feet.
You know, I think Cody's Wish This is a is the best one turn
horse. But still the speed figures are
great. But I'm going to try to take a
swing against in the Giant game. Yeah, where are you on that one,
Dan? We'll get into it later.
But with a horse like Cody's wish, do you just trust the
class? Or do you look at his form and
think, man, he might just be better off at one turn?
Now I I trust the class. I I see no reason why this horse
shouldn't get. I mean, you look at this and.
You know the the the the horses that are in here against him
they they seem to me to be teaser they have a chance and
and they don't win and all due respect to Kevin you know Dale's
horses coming out of Prairie Meadows.
And Cody's wish won the Met Mile.
So I'm I'm going to say being by Curland out of a tappet mayor
the the mile and an eighth is no problem for Cody's wish.
Well, there you go. And don't be not.
Have to fall the tracks. Midwestern tracks come on Iowa
Prairie Meadows ain't live grand.
That's. The So so do I.
So do I. But I don't think anybody can
compare the Cornhusker to the Met Mile.
Not, not at all. I'm just joking.
I love sticking up. The small guys, well, he's Kevin
Gilroy. I have to tell you, Kevin, we're
at the Indiana Derby and it's, it's early.
And I look over and Dan every 25 minutes is getting up to walk
over by the bar. And I'm thinking, man, Dan's
hitting, he's hitting it early today and what I didn't realize
was he had to pick 5 going to Belmont.
Small, small ticket, Dan, how much was that ticket?
12 bucks. No, it was 20 something.
OK, 2020 something. Dollars.
And he's got charge. It singled in the Suburban and
the horse and the horse wins like like it.
Like there's not even a race going on And so dance plus like
500 before we even turn around. That's a 500 bucks.
Even a even a buying squirrel. Even a blind squirrel.
I think all gamblers listening will appreciate the the end of
this story, which was we got one of the people there, great staff
up at Horseshoe to change the TV.
So Belmont was on closer to our table, but Dan still got up for
the Suburban and walked to the spot because he wasn't going to
not stay to the same spot. You got to do that stuff, man.
All right, so, and trust your luck on Twitter.
He's right, of course, for us over at First Gen.
Kevin, is there a cooler spot than ours that you have a piece
at this weekend? No there's no cooler spot than
than than yours or hanging out with you guys at all.
But do look for myself also on in the money media.
I got to a nice betting strategy way of you know way of thinking
through how to go for a big score in the pick five up at
Saratoga contrarian thinking and just really trying to build for
the you know $100,000 type of ticket that will make your make
your year. So in the money media, you can
find that if you sign up for the emails, it'll come through
straight to your inbox. How about that?
All right, Well, he's Kevin Kilroy, First Gen.
Sports at Trust Your Luck on Twitter or X or whatever the
bleep it's called now. All right, Kevin, we appreciate
the time. Good luck tomorrow, man.
Good. Luck, Kevin.
Good hang with you. Talk to you later.
All right. Kevin Kilroy.
All right, buddy. All right.
K the Kentucky HBPA. We thank them.
Kentucky Downs Preview day tomorrow.
And then of course the pucker up on Sunday.
Great weekend of racing over at the pee patch.
And I'm you know what? I'm not able to call it pee
patch anymore. Man.
I I if if your smallest. If your smallest Dan, I'm, I'm
sorry, but if you have a day with 9 races and your smallest
purse is 70 grand, you're not the pee patch anymore.
Well, I, I don't know, look at the infield, look at the
infield, Louie, what's growing, what's growing.
