Happy Hour takeover over Bow and Co live from section 322 of
Churchill Downs for Kentucky Oaks 150.
Here are your hosts, Luther Abo and Mike Gandolfo.
All right, you know, life is good, Louis.
Life is absolutely good. Are we back?
We're back. How about that?
I'm just dancing away and not actually paying attention.
Let's do radio. Thought you were dancing to
radio? Let's let's do our trivia
question. Biscuits here.
How about that? Biscuit is in the house Derosa.
Stop betching him. What are we doing?
All right. What are you?
Obsessed. With him, I'm tired.
Yes, you are. You bring him up more.
You bring him more up more than you bring up my wife.
I'll tell you why. See all the time.
Because he's a little, he's a little socially awkward, That's
why. So.
That's why I said I do it yesterday.
Do you like that? I do, yeah.
So that's two Dr. people we've already mentioned in the show.
We could be done, right? Sure, whatever you're.
Exhausted. I'm good, man.
I'm. I'm running on fumes right now.
But. A little fume.
Fume. Yeah, okay.
So the Oaks is currently run at a mile and 1/4.
When it was inaugurated, it was run at a mile or a mile and an
eighth. Excuse me now, pardon me.
When it was inaugurated, it was a mile, a mile and a.
Half. Oh yeah.
OK, for the 1st 16 Oaks we ran it.
Is that because absent Oaks was a mile and 1/2?
That's correct. And it was on turf.
I'm sorry we did to the dirt over here.
Not a mile and 1/2. 12 furlongs, yes.
And then they moved it to a mile and 1/4 for a couple of years
that it was actually shortened to a mile and a 16th for a long
stretches. So when you when you were a
young lad, it was actually running a mile and a 16th until.
I was a young lad. In 1981 and so in 1982, it's
been at that distance since 1982.
So there you go. You know I I'm trying to
remember what the first year is that I went to the Oaks.
It was actually right around then right.
No, no, no no. It was actually way later than
my first Derby got it OK I was all Derby not.
I mean Oaks was like because when I, you know growing up Oaks
with the local day and I know it was coming out Derby day most
days, I bet you I didn't do my first Oaks.
Was. Was told me.
To get the day off of school for Oaks Day when you were a kid.
Oh yeah, So it's been that long of a tradition.
Biscuit. Is that the same for you?
When did you move here? How old were you when you moved
to Louisville 13? OK, so that is.
How older than biscuit is? Yeah, no, no, He and he also
didn't live here, is what I'm saying.
Yeah, so, but he was out in Oldham County and stuff.
That's kind of. One, right?
Oldham County was always. County.
Are you off on Oaks Day? Yeah.
For school, Yeah, they were. OK.
So there you go. Yeah, so that kind of stuff.
But you try to describe that to people around the country.
I put up a a little video with my daughter of her, her Derby
parade float right that she made a little, you know, Red Ryder
wagon, you know, and you know that kind of stuff and just to
show people all the little happenings that are going
around. Here there's the old Saint
Leonard days and. Oh yeah, we had the same thing.
That's right. Those are great days man, for
sure. I love that, those little
derbies and stuff. We've gone through a couple of
the races here if you are wondering, or walk into the gate
here. This was to be on the turf.
So I'm going to play the 10 horse here.
Two wins, 2 seconds and four runs over a sloppy track seem to
be really comfortable that way. The 16 horse is an MTOA main
track only in Churchill Downs. The main track is the dirt
track, so Tyler picks up them out there.
You get to get a nice price on that 16 horse kind of out of
sight, out of mind Mike. If people make their bets before
the day right, the 16 isn't included in.
Well, let's be real, the people here are the track.
Don't really know what's going on, probably.
Also, don't know the 16, it's really in there, but it looks
like he's either 8 to one or three to one.
Do you have it right in front of you?
There, I'm sorry, I was looking, I was getting ready for seven
because I know that's what we're going to do next.
OK. Which which horse 16 at the 16
is at right now at 12:50, OK. So that's a huge number in the
slop with Tyler Geffa Leone didn't have the horse last race
with the 10. Apologize for that one.
But we will try to keep it going here on the horse racing
happier. We're on ESP at 680-1057.
His name is Mike Gandolfo. I'm Louie Robos that can't roll
hanging about back to the station.
For us, we're going to talk a little Ali Sheba next.
This is where we're going to. So this is the seventh race
today. It is a mile and a 16th on the
dirt. The Ali Sheba is a great two
$750,000 purse here for four year olds and up another awesome
race. Every year we're going to
scratch the 6th and we're going to scratch the seven out of this
race big time. Dang it, That stinks.
Stinks for you. Yes, because I wanted those
horses running. Because they suck.
Yeah. Tapatrice is going to be a bum
today. I mean, just an absolute bum
today. That sucks.
Oh, I wanted to call him a bum now, so he could run like a bum,
and then I could be the derrier or the downs again and talk
about bums. You know, that's kind of funny
because some of those same ways we'd like not.
I don't want to go like full on, but Tabatrice, last year when we
were talking about him from Derby, you could equate the way
that we talked about Tabatrice a little bit to how we talked
about fierceness because we were talking about the immaturity.
Fierceness is way more talented, I think, than Tabatrice is.
So I just want to be very clear on that.
I agree with that actually. So Tabatrice is just a goofy
horse. He's goofy, just goofy.
Just cannot figure it out right. He's just not mature.
He reminds me of the guy I know. Like we all have a friend.
Zach Zayner? No.
No. But like, they just don't grow
up from the stuff they liked when they were 23, and they just
stay in that bubble forever. They're playing video games and.
Or no, the video game thing lasts, but like just.
I don't know. I don't even know what it is,
but they. Do Video game Guy.
Once in a while. Yeah, yeah.
I mean, once every once in a while, it's fine.
But you're not playing Call of Duty.
Like twice a week I'll play 2 FIFA soccer games.
Sure. Yeah, yeah.
Or something. Yeah, yeah, right.
Like it, like, you know, 45 minutes, right.
Yeah. Twin Spires are saying Tyler's
on the 12. Boy did he stay on the 12th?
Is that what's going on? Who's on the 16?
Then they have a jockey change. That changed on me too.
Is there that many scratches going on, Mike?
The 16 rider is Flavian Pratt. Oh, OK.
I don't feel bad about that. Then.
Never mind. Withdrawn.
That's not a downgrade at all. That is a lateral move in my
eye. Flavia.
Pratt and Tyler, who you got here?
You got Tyler, right? Probably Tyler, yeah, but if
we're in California, Flavian. Right.
Or New York Flavian. Yeah, overall.
So let's talk about this race 7 real quick.
I got first mission on top here. I'm I'm very not interesting, I
apologize for that. But I do have first mission on
here. He's going to be running for the
third time this year. Let's talk about and.
Would this be a potential single in this spot for first mission?
Let me walk through it and then I'll tell you.
Let me let me remind myself, I hate to do that to you only
because I know I have looked at. A lot.
Of horses and hundreds of races. Frankly, the last five days let
me make sure I'm back in here on this.
He has a heavy favorite, 8:00 to 5:00, right?
Now sure, I do not have him singled in the pick five.
How about that? Now that I'm looking at my
notes, I do think he's on top here.
I think he's got a great shot here.
One that Essex handicap Adam Island and a blast out at Oak
Lawn Park. 100 speed figure. If you wanted to have a knock
here, his speed figures bounce race to race OK, but the results
really don't. So his last five races are win.
Ran in the Pegasus. Didn't work out before that.
Second place by a nose. First place, first place, first
place. OK, this horse is always right
there except in the Pegasus. OK, now do you hold the Pegasus
against the horse? I do not.
OK. Because he essentially took a
time off. You know, from you know he runs
to the Clark Clark. He ran second in the Clark.
If he likes the track that much he's probably going to have a
good day here as well. So I think he'll be just fine.
So that first mission on top here money supplies my second
horse to 1. Tyler gets them out for Joe
Sharp. OK.
Sorry, you need to look like. I was going to say something.
But go ahead. Two of those hit together at 30%
at Churchill Downs. So I'm going to lead into that
118% of greatest takes for Joe Serp.
This horse is coming off a little bit of time off here.
Ran in late March in the New Orleans Classic, lost by 3 1/2
legs there to Red Route one who had his best race of his life
that day. So we're hoping here that we'll
get this back. The tent is nowhere to be found
here. I'm getting crushed today.
Yeah, no kidding. I stopped at the tent.
Get him off the rail. Come on.
Boom up. There we go.
Start to make a move. Come on, 10, get going 10.
Come on 10, Look at this. Get up.
Come on, 10. All the way home.
Look at that. Let's eat some more and see
biggies, he would say going to win by three or four here.
There we go. Looks like 10-8, probably maybe
ten. 210-2210 to here. So we'll get 3:00 to 1:00 on
that horse back on the side of there.
So there you go, a little back on the the winning side there.
Appreciate our guy Rich making the bet for me down at the
window, making that run money supplies.
The one in the alley Sheba Tyler got for the other Joe Sharp.
Really, really good combination here at Churchill Downs.
So I'll lean on the two of them as well.
And by the way, I'm, I'm a guy like this.
I don't want to be out of a ticket because of blank.
I don't want to be out of a ticket at Churchill Downs
because I get beaten by Tyler on a good horse.
I don't want that. So I'm going to include him in
my tickets that way we're going to go outside to trademark for
the last one. This is a horse that ran in that
Pegasus as well. Way up the track needed the time
off. Vicky Oliver brings this horse
back in and this is a horse that has won four times at Churchill
Downs. So that's why I'm going to use
him in this spot. 4 for 17 lifetime on dirt.
Actually 6 for a 22 lifetime. So not you're going to look at
this form and go, man, why is Louis using this horse?
Horse 4. The horse seems to really like
it here. Did you El Rosario?
That is not a downgrade from any jockey he's had in the past.
In fact, it's a major step up from who he's had recently
between Fernando de la Cruz and Mandy Garcia.
And and and Garcia. No offense to those two guys.
Joel Rosario simply a better jockey.
So I'll lean on those three in the pick 5.
Tell me a little bit about the horse that beat First Mission in
the Clark trademark. You know anything about that
horse? Off the top of my head.
The reason why is because I don't, I didn't think you would
and that the fact that that that's a great two and this is a
great two to me they're very similar type style races.
Well, they're set up to be on the opposite ends of the count,
absolutely. They're the mirror of each
other, OK? The fact that first mission
didn't win that race and was 8 to 5, even though trademark's
not in this race, worries you. It worries.
Me, right. So he's not a single deal.
I would not be a single to me do.
You agree with me on that part? Yeah.
And I actually like to value something you would get like
dear Morocco for that reason too, because I'll Morocco was
just after she finished just behind got it first mission in
that race as well. So but you get 10 to one versus
8 to 5? Fair enough, right.
Fair. Enough.
So that's 9 gig 2. Six to one horses there that I
think have a legitimate charge, Well, that's a nice price.
It's a much better price today if you played race to race, I'm
with you, I'm. Not going to be shocked if first
mission wins here. I don't know if he's worthy of
the 8:00 to 5:00 I. Would agree with that part?
Yeah, no, no, not pretty much. Yeah, yeah, makes sense to me.
OK, look at that. Look at me baking this.
Horse race right there. All right, the 8th is a turf
turf course race right here. OK, so this.
We got the Modesty Stakes presented by Derby City Gaming,
which I drove past yesterday. It was in all its glory.
So. By the way, yeah, just I'm not a
I'm not a slots guy. I'll just, I'll put that out
there. But they've got the legit sports
book downtown now. It's actually very nice because
I don't like the Aristides room. They just took the handicap, you
know, the old OTV room essentially.
I just put up new TV's and the new stuff.
It's very nice here. I don't want to downplay it at
all, but DCG Downtown is way nicer for a sports.
Book Absolutely. We're going to scratch the the 8
horse here in the modesty in the modesty excuse me.
Go ahead be your best with our rad was on he was the first
pigtail on TVGI don't know if that affect your handicap here
or not. So here we go.
Eighth race today on this of course is the modesty stakes.
You know this is another race looks like it's pretty wide open
The the the favorite now is heavenly Sunday.
Another Frenchie and Brad Cox. Seems like Frenchie and Brad Cox
are in every race and they're the favorite.
Almost all of them. Can't win them all.
Right, so three to one shot here with Heavenly Sunday.
I'm having like Sunday 4th in my hand.
I like this here. I like this.
This is a race where you make some money.
I think this is a race to definitely make some money and
that's what Flavi and Pratt and Todd Pletcher surprisingly in
here out of the orchid at Gulfstream Park mile and a half
we're going to short. We're going to get back to a
distance that I think is a little bit more fitting for
surprisingly the six. Here again, Flavi and Pratt
really trust this was a horse by the way.
Last two times out has finished second-half a length and then by
a neck in that Pegasus, right. OK.
If you can run that well in the Pegasus, in my mind you can run
that well anywhere. I'm going to trust that horse
today to do exactly that here over this yielding course as
well. Really interested to see how the
horse takes to the Yielding course because this horse has
only got to run on firm courses before.
So we're going to have a little bit of a change up there.
But I've got surprisingly on top.
I went to Mufi next to five, that's an 8 to 1 horse.
I get Frankie Dettori here and this horse is shipping from
California. Ran really well at Turfway Park
and at Woodbine before. So in my mind if you can do
that, the yielding course isn't going to bother you that much.
Comes out of that Buena Vista 2nd place finish.
The Megahertz at Santa Anita as well.
With both of those great it takes grade two and a grade 3.
Good spot for MUFI I think here in this spot.
Plus I'd just like to say MUFI. I think at the two horses, Aspen
Grove, Tyler, Gaffe, Leona Board for Jax Isterson.
Not a huge number of races between these two guys, only 18
the last two years, but this horse is coming out of the
Hillsborough, another one that finished second.
I interfaces. We see these blanket finishes
much, much more off of them. So I don't hold those against
horses as long as they're within a length Mike.
I think of them as potential winners next time out.
And so in this case, we get a horse that finished within 1/2
length under Javier Castellano. I think it's an upgrade to get
Tyler here. Overall, Javier and Tyler I
think of in the same similar class, at least.
Tyler maybe a touch above right now, but last year Javier won
all the big races with the Belmont, with the Traverse, like
it's not really that big. Of a step down in class.
Step down to class here. The Hillsborough is the highest
graded race at Tampa Every year it on Tampa Derby day.
That's a Grade 3, Hillsborough Grade 2, right?
And so this is actually their highest race, finishing second
right there. I like turf horses that are part
of that blanket finish. He'll be part of it for.
Sure. He ran three grade ones before
that and we talked about how important.
Has that overseas form is run in Europe.
Aspen broke the two in that race.
Thank you. I'm so sorry, but Jack Sishton
ran that horse overseas, ran in good to soft and won in the
Irish EBF stakes. Yeah, everyone loves EBF Stakes,
obviously. Like I've ever watched that, but
did win in that race has had Jamie Spencer aboard, John
Velasquez, Javier Castellano. They obviously take a lot of
this. Horse Yeah, you guys actually
got two other Irish horses in this race as well and they're
longer shots here. Like you look at those two and
give them a shot just because of how wet it is that you got to.
You know, that's an interesting way to look at this.
Great. This this.
Horse the nine and the 12, yeah. Let's go ahead and do this.
Yeah, so the eight horses be your best, right?
But it's been running. To be your best scratched.
Right. But, but I was say would not be
an example of this because even though you see that IRE next to
them, by the way, people don't know that's where the horse was
bred, OK. And so a lot of times we look
for that as far as. So tomorrow would we have the
two runners from Japan, it'll say JP and next to their name,
that's what that's for. It's for Japan.
In this case, the eight's going to scratch out and that's OK
because that's a horse that's only running in North America,
doesn't have that European form, right?
But you're talking about Papilio.
Papilio was a horse that made me look really smart last year.
Which race did she win? She won the Appalachia to
Keeneland and I gave up Papillio as my top pick and everyone was
like, what are we doing? I don't think she's fast enough
to win in this field, and I haven't.
I can't remember. The only thing that would make
me like her here is she did run. Well, if I'm remembering, it was
the, yeah, the Saratoga Oaks invitation.
She ran well and that had been a day that was similar to this
one, where it rained a lot the night before.
Before that at Keeneland, it's always kind of listed as good.
It's almost never a firm Turkers at Keeneland.
I think they water it. I think they literally do for
what the the setup is there. Ran well there as well.
I always trust Keeneland turf form.
It seems to travel to other places really well and so she
ran well there. Papilio 12:50, you do get Javier
Castellano. In that spot is absolutely one
of those horses. And then you go ahead.
Well, to your to your same point, I'm sorry, didn't are you
doing that horse? The 11 horse, Caroline Street
was bred in the United States but raced over in Europe.
So what do you look at that horse?
Yeah, So Brendan Walsh, for example, right?
He's got a good turf voice. He's like, we're going to ask
it, we're going to try to figure it out, right?
We're going to run high level races for sure.
Is coming off of a layoff from September and that is something
he does really, really well. He wasn't the trainer of this
horse previously. It did run one time in that
Saratoga Oaks Invitational. They shifted over, was
previously in the Joseph O'Brien Bar and we watched him win a
Breeders' Cup race. And so O'Brien trained this
horse and he won a Breeders' Cup race and she's still only two
for eight lifetime. So that's a horse I'm going to
try to beat today. Queen's command is on the
outside. Louisa is in there.
This race looks like it's pretty wide it.
Sets up for a fantastic finish. I'm going to guess the blankets
going to involve six horses. All right, the ninth race is the
8 bells, 7 furlong Sprint, of course, named after 8 bells.
It was the A Philly ran the Kentucky Derby $600,000 purse
here for Philly's three years old.
But the one term Phillies basically is what we get here.
Louis, who did you like in this race?
Yeah, The 8 Bells is a really interesting race here and I.
You talked about singles, and if I wanted to get really skinny on
a ticket, this is where I would look to Denim and Pearl.
She won the Beaumont last time at Keeneland.
Now Mike's going to say, hey, Keeneland doesn't always
translate to Churchill girls, especially on the dirt.
No, no, especially on the dirt. And that is a fair, an accurate
way to look at those comparisons.
But you're also correct for Phillies and mares does not seem
to be as a big an effect, which is interesting, right?
But the other part is this is a horse that has been to Churchill
Downs and has won. OK, so it's already been on the
course, has been here for a while.
The last couple of workouts. In fact, the last three have all
been at the track. She's been here.
Flavia and Pratt aboard was there at Keeneland as well.
That was a good field and she won by 9 lengths.
Now it is very difficult for horses to run that back.
This horse has been in five races, never been worse than
second three wins, 2 seconds has been at stakes company three
times. Her first run against winners
was in $100,000. Optional claimer.
This horse was in the highest level made special weight at
Keeland. This horse has never been in bad
company class, Goal class in this case.
Give me denim and pearls maybe by 3-4 legs I mean I think she's
that strong impels in this race for Frenchie and Brad Cox very
lightly race. I'm going to include her in
longer tickets just because Brad Cox at Churchill, obviously
we're. Also agree with Brad Cox has.
She moved up in the favorite. Oh, she's the morning light
favorite. The morning light favorite,
sorry, yes, yes, yes. Yes.
So I'm trying to beat her essentially in the picks by
putting seven first. I think they're kind of neck and
neck as far as, but I'm betting on these the potential of Impel.
The one horse. I've already seen it with 7
denim and Pearl. I've already seen it from her.
I know she's capable of it. That's why she's a head in the
head of Kevin. We're going to scratch the four
horse trial and then if you listen to our show this week, we
had Savi Joseph on talking about the 12 horse, R Harper Rose.
My long shot of the weekend If this horse runs her race, she
wins 2 for two at the distance. R Harper Rose won a grade 3
already. The forward gal on the way to
the Kentucky Oaks Saffy knows she's not a two turn horse is
going to keep her in this kind of company. 7 furlong seems to
be her distance. You're getting 12 to one on the
morning line on the 12 in this what's the race #9 race 9:00 to
12:00 if you want a long shot Today our Harper rose is that
horse is already won really really well.
Running 2245 one ten splits. Mike super fast to Gulfstream
Park. I talk about it all the time
that dirt from Gulfstream it translates well.
The Churchill Downs, our Harper rose on the outside, a major
factor in that. Race.
So we got right now, just to recap what we have, we've got
the launcher win is the next. Race that's going to come on and
so 4:00 to. Five again.
Seven to two on pretty mischievous.
Shigera is actually ahead of pretty mischievous in the three
to. One How about that?
I'm actually not surprised with that.
How about that? I'm liking sugar right here.
I really am. Okay.
Yeah. So we'll see.
What? Radiomatic.
No, maybe not over that I like. At least over pretty.
Just got to show me something and I see something.
Yeah, so just. As a layoff.
Just as a layoff and just because I know she was 100% of
the guy, yeah sure. So I don't think she had
anything major go on. I don't remember that at least.
Do you remember her having anything major going on?
Was just wasn't. I think she needed time off.
They were aiming for the Breeders Cup.
She wasn't ready. They were like.
Screwed. Yeah, that's right.
So we're going to go, let's get our trivia question in.
Let's go to break. Danny Brewer will join us at the
last little bit for the talk about the Edgewood and the Oaks
and then. You know, that's a good idea
actually. How about?
We'll do that. All right.
So what is our look? At you, orchestrating this like
you're the host. Or something.
Yes, how about that. Let's go ahead and do this.
There's been a female jockey to win the oaks or celebrate the
ladies. Today all of us have some pink
on Mike happens to think this woman is not unattractive, as
Dan Ellman would say a handsome woman.
So we're going to do that next. By the way we will talk to to
Issel tomorrow. We'll do 1/2 hour with this all
tomorrow. So everyone's wondering get a
ton of text about that. By the way, I love that because
it means they hung out with us last year.
They're hanging out again this year and everything that we do
Mike, you and me, horse racing happy hour.
Obviously the Rebo and Co, the Co means, you know, that Co-op,
the cooperation of the community, that's what the Co
is. For.
We want the engagement. That's exactly right.
So if you're hanging out with us for the second time, the third
time on a Derby weekend, we mean it when we say it.
We freaking love it. It is.
It's the best part of this for people.
It really is. And so a female jockey is one of
the Oaks. What's her name?
A reminder, thanks to our partners, the Kentucky HPPAKY
hppa.com. Our our friend Chet Mays.
Really great guy. We'll talk to him tomorrow too
at doctor Chet Mays on all the socials.
And that's where he does a ton of his advertising, his talks.
You can meet him that way. Get to know him a little bit.
He's not the typical surgeon. He's got a nice personality,
kind of gets out. He's fun, loves horse racing.
My goodness, that guy loves horse racing.
And then of course our friends up at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
We will have picks for them first race especially.
That is the big fudge pick of the day.
We'll make sure that we do that as well.
My friend Brian Dettman, 2 Tees One, and injury lawyer Brian
Dettman, Injury law. Go find him in the heart of the
Highlands. He's got his office as well.
Who was that female jockey to win the Oaks?
We talk about it next. Horse Racing Happy Hour here,
Audience. P 681057
You're listening to the Horse racing Happy Hour takeover over
Bow and Co live from section 322 of Churchill Downs.
Here is Louis Rabeau and Mike Andolfo.
All right. There's a man with a pipe.
There's I love it. There's a man.
With a pipe tomorrow if you want to.
I got quite the pipeline. Any more stimulus all?
Right. Same.
Horse racing. Game now.
Listen, Louis, we're joined right here by the best turf
rider in Tennessee. Game here.
In Tennessee of any turf rider. And all I'm going to say is like
there's a there's a common bond between us just because we were
all in the first, the same class to be inducted in the National
Turf Riders of Broadcast. Difference is Danny though.
We got in on our first try. It took Danny a decade.
Danny, How does that? Make you feel.
Well you know what, Whenever I if, if I'm saying I'm in the
same class, you guys, I think I've climbed the.
Ladder round too, yeah. Yeah, I'm up there, you know.
The only female jockey to win the oaks.
Do you know her name? You were probably.
Rosie Naprav. I was.
Going to say you were here for both, right?
One of both 20/12/2014. Is there anything you like about
Rosie Napravnik besides everything?
I love my redheads. Are you sure?
I love my redheads. Outside Danny Brewer.
Oh my gosh, I'm doing this. I got the sports for my horse
racing scoop.com. Exactly, Yes, your horse racing
scoop.com and I'm also on WGNS radio.
I've got a handicapping spot on Friday mornings.
You can listen to it online and also it's on Facebook.
Is horse racing becoming more popular in Tennessee?
I I think a little bit, you know, it's one of the things for
the gambling aspect because sports betting is is legal.
I think that that has helped the sport and one of the things that
I've encouraged folks is low risk, high yield, that's the
beauty of this game is low risk, high yield.
You can bet a 10 cent super effect for $2.40 and you can
20-30 forty 100 to one on your money with that kind of stuff if
the right horse is coming. To be honest with you, when the
sports betting became will you in Kentucky, it's one of those
things I looked like, he's like, I'm going to bet $5 and only
make like $2.00. It's like, I don't know what I'm
not doing that you know? Exactly, Yeah.
No. And that's the whole thing is,
you know, like in football, unless you're playing those
Parlay cards, you know, a lot of times you've got to bet, you
know, $50.00 to win $50. You don't and start.
The racing. That's right.
We're going to talk about the last two Steaks races.
We haven't talked about exact question.
And I want to. I want to kind of pick Denny's
brain. When did you get up here?
As far as this week, I was up here Thursday.
Morning, Thursday morning. OK.
He saw us right away. Being around here, Buzz, you've
heard horses, you've heard about maybe someone you saw on the
track. Anything like that?
Any kind of takeaways from being up here?
Well, you know, whenever I was, I was up here last Saturday for
the morning works and stuff and Stronghold.
I was very impressed. He did not work on Saturday.
But man, he was on the muscle. I mean, just full of himself.
They walked him, you know, he just kind of jogged around the
track, very full of themselves. Stronghold.
I was very impressed by Stronghold.
So your long shot this year would be?
Yes, yes, absolutely. Loving that.
I'm loving that. So I hope nobody else likes
Stronghold, because I do. I just think it's actually.
Don't. Know.
Yes, It's at Sports Brew and Sports Brew with AZSPORTZBREW.
You know another thing about Stronghold is he's never
finished worse than second and and he's traveled too so he he's
been around he won at Ellis Park that's where he broke his and he
broke he he a race at Ellis Park he broke his maiden here at
Churchill. So he has been around the
country. So I think Stronghold is
definitely worth the play. Mystic Dan is.
That's, that's my, that's my, my top pick and he's a big long
shot. I'm taking a big swing of that.
But Mystic Dan? I'll tell you that stronghold
how many California horses do we have with a Churchill start and
a Churchill win Doesn't happen very often.
Welcome to the modern era first racing where the the maidens are
100 and. 20,000. Yeah, exactly.
And that's what because talk with Phil D'amato, you know,
because he's been in the Phil D'amato barn since his, you
know, since since he came into racing and Phil likes to run in
Kentucky, he's running more and more in Kentucky because he says
he's looking for great spots to put his horses.
And like Louis just said, the money is here at Churchill.
That's right. All right.
So in that maiden special win, do you know the two horses that
ran behind him in that race? Yes, it's two horses that that
are here. Track, Phantom and then another
horse who's running in the Derby, the.
Woodwinder Resilience. OK, there you go.
How about that he's. Not looking at anything, I want
to point out that the top two finishers of that maiden race on
October 1st here at Churchill Downs, over 7 furlongs, won a
100 point race to qualify for this.
And so when we tell you, and I'm sure people get exhausted
hearing it, watch the maiden races at Churchill and
Keeneland. In the fall, especially October,
November, you might see a Derby starter.
We got two of the same. We got three of the same race.
Phantom ran third. Yeah, 200 point winners.
Yeah, 200 point winners. It's really remarkable.
That's crazy. Exactly right.
And that's the whole thing is, you know, horse for the course,
I think can be a factor. Yes, they do play differently.
Tracks play differently. People think, well, you know, Oh
well, it's just dirt and it's, it's an Oval.
So it's the same. No, it's not the same.
Absolutely, especially here. I mean it's a very unique course
and they're saying it's a little deeper this year.
I don't know. We'll see if that plays out or
not. Well, let's talk about a turf
race though. We're going to talk about the
10th race, which is the Edgewood Stakes.
Like Louis said, this is the, this is the girls version of the
American turf, 3 year old race here, great to $600,000 purse
mile and a 16th on the turf in this Edgewood Stakes.
Louis Sun's starting to peak out a little bit.
It seems like we're trying to trying to do.
We got a 14 horse field here. Let me see if we got any
scratches yet. I don't.
I should have pulled that pulled up.
Sorry about that. Our scratches that we have in
the 10th race right now are the 6th pounce and the 12 simply in
front as well as the 14 ragtime laden.
So scratch again in that tenth race.
We're scratching the 6th, we're scratching the 12 and we're
scratching the 14. This is my long shot play of the
day and I don't think it's close.
I'm on dynamic pricing here. The 10 horse I've gone with Chad
and Irad here, she's obviously a three-year old.
She is a royally bred son of Night of Thunder, an Irish who's
a son of Dubali and that is the name in turf racing.
So this is when they talk turf racing in Ireland.
It's a different conversation. They talk about bloodlines, they
talk about keeping those bloodlines alive.
We saw with a ghost Rodan at the Breeders Cup.
He's the next in that great line of turf runners in Ireland.
It's in the, it's in the ethos of Irish racing to breed horses
like this and she's part of that group.
I'm going to take the 12 to one shot here, ran in the Florida
Oaks a little bit up the track, but I think just getting back to
form, if she can get back to how she ran in the sweetest champ,
which was that she was more mid packed last race, Bad start.
Finds herself way in the back of the field.
Way too much to do. That Tampa turf course is a
little strange. It's got that diagonal shoot so
it's almost a three turn race. I'm going to give her a pass
here. I'm going to trust the
connections here. I'm going to go 12 to one here.
Dynamic pricing on top. It's all right.
So it's on the turf. It's I read Chad's first choice
or is Flavian now? Flavian's been on that hard to
justify since the get go. I think that's.
That's the play, right? I'm watching jockeys, right?
Like I want to see the jockey I rad running dynamic pricing for
the first time I think. I have hard to justify in the
second spot, and that is because of the layoff we've been talking
about. Like, especially with Phillies
and Mirrors, they take that winner off when they're in
season, right. We're coming back into this race
with hard to justify. Is she the most talented?
It's not a question here, right It's it's it's stunning how good
the Justified babies are on all services.
It's it really is. It's stunning How good.
He's he's been just lights out. She runs first.
She say with crops been unbelievable.
She comes back as that Breeders' Cup juvenile turf winner.
OK, that juvenile Phillies turf winner, excuse me, under Flavian
Pratt I I'm just going to trust the current form.
I'm going to try to beat her with with the 12.
I mean, how much money can good magic and justify make this
weekend good magic and justify I can just clean up?
Almost as much money as Louis. Oh man.
I'll tell you what, Danny, did you have a pick here in this?
OK so I'm going to this is one for my wife.
You know here dancing in Dixie. It's a long shot play.
She's ran very well. You know she was beaten at
Tampa, just she finished third I think by like a whisker she she
could have won the race and then she ran good at Keeneland, her
last start you know so so dancing in Dixie is who I like
as a long shot play. But Buku, I think is the horse
is going to win it. I like Buku.
Yeah, so Buchu is the 4th horse here.
Martine Garcia. Phil Bauer won that Appalachian
last time out. It's already shown that form.
I'm going to use dancing to Dixie actually, because well,
she showed me the Appalachian, so she got away from that.
Both of those horses, by the way, the Ortiz brothers are
didn't like the Tampa turf course.
I don't know what it is, but you're right about that.
She's right there. And I always hold up, if a turf
horse is right there at the end of these two turned races, at
some point they're going to breakthrough.
So Buchi did that already last. Time.
I'm actually kind of interested, you know, you mentioned the
Tampa turf course, yeah. Which we hold up as one of the
great. Ones but at the same time though
like this is a heavy sand based turf course and it's not a it's
a Bermuda grass right. So it's I'm wondering how if
this runs similar to that. OK, you know, I don't know.
Love to see I. I haven't noticed that in the
form before. Of course is coming from Tampa.
Doesn't seem to be a translation, but no, it's.
Possible. OK, yeah.
I've no, you know, evidence of that.
Just know that this is a very heavy sand base.
Right. By the way, if a horse bounces
off of their bad last race and that one, it'll be pounce.
The six did not seem, for some reason, in that Appalachian
didn't like that scratch scratch.
Yeah, Pounce is scratch. Pounce is going to pounce back
into the bar and how about that? You know, this just tells you,
like Louis doesn't listen to what I say at all, right?
Well, you know, he's is it kind of like your wife?
Yes, that's actually a very good, very good analogy.
But it's a very good analogy. He's like, he's like my wife
doesn't listen to me, like whatever else.
All right. The the horse from the launcher
in are on the course we've talked about to me.
This is the main event of the day.
We have three potential superstars within in the mayor
world. Three horses that we I think we
would all expect to see run in the Breeders Cup in November.
What did you think about this launcher in Danny?
I mean, I I I like pretty mischievous here just because
I'm a Brendan Walsh guy. But but you're absolutely right.
This is it. It's A Knockout of a race.
I mean it's it's really got you got 3 heavyweights.
This is why you come. You know I was talking earlier
with some boat one, the great day about oaks.
The great thing about oaks and Derby days are you got 16 graded
stakes races over these two days.
So you can see lots of great horses.
I mean, it's fantastic. And we're just a couple of
minutes away from the post here for that loss.
You're getting a longer price. I'm pretty mischievous than the
other two main contenders in this field.
That's Love it. Love it.
Idiomatic right now at 3:00 to 5:00.
By the way, I'm not comfortable betting 3 to 5 on this surface
right now. That layoff etcetera.
I I she might win that. That's fine.
I'm. I'm not comfortable with it.
Not comfortable. With it idiomatic though again
the Breeders Cup champion. The two year old the the I'm
sorry the older dirt female the close world champion.
I can someone all over my words. So anyway, let's go on.
Let's start talking about this Oaks field a little bit.
We know that the one horse is scratched out of it tab with
Janelli. So we'll start.
We're just going to just you go horse by horse again like we
normally do. Yay, nay.
Eliminate or you. Have to make the nay like you're
a horse if you're against a horse.
OK. All right, all right.
There you go. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, sure. So we're.
Going to start you. Have to be at least a little
ridiculous when you're on this show.
We got we get a long shot that's right.
That's right. We get a long a big price on the
two horse Jinjin with Brad Cox and Frenchy.
This is like they're they're running together in every race
today, it seems like, and they're favorite in almost
everything. And now you get them at 30 to 1.
Or, you know that's crazy. You know Jen, Jen is one of
those horses that I think could be a wise guy horse here just
because of the connections, you know, and and Brad Cox, I think
he's the top trainer in the game today that that's what I think
as far as just what he does at different tracks and with all of
his horses I think he's the top trainer in the game today.
So yes, if you can get 30 to 1 on Brad Cox and Flojo, I don't
know why you wouldn't bet it some kind of way.
Or as the flight attendant on our way to Breeders' Cup said
floor on Gay Rue. That was, he was supposed to be
on our flight out. To for me, except if it stays
this sloppy. This horse did win the busanda
two turns and aqueduct in the mud, going a mile and an eighth
earlier in the year. It might be included, especially
if you play the trifecta. Exactly.
All right, #3 where's my ring? Where are we going on?
We know that story. Fantastic story.
Did he tell that on air? Was that in the bunker?
I can't remember what are the story?
Goes that that big divorce between two very wealthy people.
10 carat ring, the wife calls, the exit says where's my ring?
And he named a horse after, how about that?
That's called the ball. Yeah, So.
So maybe what he was hoping for is he named after something on
the horse, You know, I don't know.
Again, where's round ring one? The Gazelle started off 15 to
one on the morning lines. Bet already down to 9 to one I.
Think that's fair. That's a fair price on her
because that gazelle is actually a better predictor than the wood
coming into the oaks. And it is for the.
Without question and and you know it's a feel good horse
because a feel good story because Val Breakerhoff he he
doesn't have a lot of horses and and but what he does have
usually can be pretty good and so he's a great story to be here
with with what this connections I think he's got a chance for
sure. Yeah, she's absolutely got a
chance. About to take off right here.
We got a little trouble. That is five.
That is. Oh, that's pretty mischievous.
She's being mischievous. They're off.
They all broke. Fine.
All right, while the race is going on, let's go on to
regulatory risk right here. The four horse, this was a 20 to
one on the morning line has already been extended the odds
of 33 to one. Seems like the betters don't
like her. She didn't a then for you all.
I just think, I think the two turns is not what she wants to
do. Wager in on her would be a real
risk. Here's a horse that's right.
Now the favorite out there is Anna or Torpedo Anna.
People love. Her Brian Hernandez can't even
peek. You're not going to throw out
the favor, right? No, she's a definite include for
me. I think I have her 4th in my
handicapping to do. I do.
I have her 4th in my handicapping.
But I have her in every single one of my tickets.
I absolutely include a Torpedo, Anna.
This Oak's favorite is kind of gone back and forth a little bit
today, you're right. Yeah, and I think that one of
the reasons that she's bet is because of her connections.
Kenny Mcpeek, Brian Hernandez, but very good horse.
And I'm with Louis, she's in my superfecta.
Oh, show. By the way, bred for five grand.
5000. $5000 so son of our daughter, Excuse me of fast,
Anna so. Should be an interesting they're
actually getting to the top of the stretch here on the watch.
Only one of the major contenders that doesn't have wet track
experience. Quarter mile to go here, Doris.
Vader. Come on, Doris.
Vader. Make me look good.
Idiomatic Trying to do what she always does.
Pretty mischievous making her move on the outside.
Look at idiomatic Oh, look at her go.
Idiomatic. Oh, what a beast, man.
She's great. Oh, she gets against the rail
there. A little sloppy.
She's going to keep it up. Yeah, she's got there.
OK, well, there you go. Good.
For idiomatic. Idiomatic.
Not my early favorite to repeat in the Eclipse.
Any chance Back-to-back Breeders' Cup distance?
Yeah, man. She's without question.
I mean that makes 9 of 10 for her, is that right?
Because she was eight of nine, so 9 of 10.
You could be seeing a potential superstar, the best, best female
horse. By the way, can I introduce the
next horse in the Kentucky I? Was going to.
I wasn't done with Anna, but. Keep talking about Torpedo Anna.
Yes, winner out of three out of four.
The one time she got beat, it was at Churchill Dan.
She did come in second though, however, in that race, So go
ahead and go. That was at the main level,
right? It was it.
Was Yeah. OK.
No, I just. That was an awesome claiming.
I'm sorry. OK, lemon muffin.
Earlier in the day we said, who's the longest odds ever win
the Kentucky Derby? Little horse named lemons
Forever 47 to one. I bet on lemon muffin you're
going to get a solid 50 to 1. You may be right there.
Yeah, yeah, this. Is an A for me?
Right now, she's 19 to one. She's gone.
She's gone the other way. People, People I listen, Uncle
Louis, people y'all need to be better.
I don't know what to tell you. Y'all need to be better.
Trusting Wayne, Lucas and Keith as muscin with an Oaks horse
where there are five obviously better horses in this in this
field. Betting this horse down.
Shame on y'all. Stop it.
Be better if you want to spend money on on lemon Muffet just
give it to me. I can burn it for you.
Stop doing that now. That horse is definitely going
to win the oaks. Go ahead.
Danny, I think that one of the things on lemon muffin that's
having her bet down is the quote, UN quote, dumb money.
The people who don't know anything about it, they see the
name and they're like, oh, lemon Muffin, Yeah, that's the horse I
want. I like.
So, so yeah, so I think that that's one of the reasons why
she's catching some action right now is because and and don't get
me wrong, there's nothing, I've got plenty of dumb money that
I've thrown out there, my dog on sale.
So I'm not trying to. You know, diss anybody when I
say dumb money, but I think that's a.
Lot of it. By the way, am I rooting for
that horse, Mike? Yes.
Why am I rooting for that horse? So we.
Got Lucas in the Pro. Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah. Absolutely.
Absolutely. Yeah.
Good. God, we need that again, yes.
Lemon Muffin did win the Hunterby, but did not fire in
the fantasy Stakes #7. Fiona's magic comes into the
race with 30 to one on the morning line is now 35 to one we
size aboard. What do we think about Fiona's
magic? Not a lot.
Seems to do her best work over one term.
I think the two terms is just not what she wants to do here.
Daughter Saint Patrick's Day is the Florida bred for three
grand. I I she's welcome to beat me
today. I think that if Fiona's magic
wins, it'll be a rabbit out of the hat.
Man, look at, listen, Danny Brewer's got them all, man.
He was getting there, working on these these little dad jokes.
I don't think he is. I think this is just, I think it
was 7 years, seven years old, making future dad jokes.
Flavlingen is on the 8th Tarifa, another horse that we'd be
considered I think for the, although interestingly enough
has gone from 7:00 to 2:00 to 6:00 to 1 people not betting
Tarifa, which I'm kind of fascinated by.
Love it. I love it because you know what?
That's my top pick is Tarifa. She's a three for three this
year. I do believe Brad Cox, you know,
talking to Brad yesterday about her.
Of course, you know, here's the thing, most trainers are really
high on their horses. But he was especially high on
Tarifa and said that, you know, if she gets the trip, she's
going to be really, really tough and I agree with him.
If she gets the trip, look out. It's Tarifa in the winter
circuit. By the way, over two turns she's
run three times, all of them this year.
Okay, she ran that one turn mile here at Churchill that came back
in January. Fairgrounds started running two
turn races, her best finish by length.
Victory was in the slop, so if it stays muddy or whatever, she
might actually be even better than she's been in her last
three races. I actually, I have her on top as
well. Her only loss was here at
Churchill Downs. She missed the board completely.
First time against, against. Winners.
Against Denman Pearls. I think it's my single today.
There. You.
Go. Yeah, there you go.
So that was that's just all you got to look at with Tarifa
again. Could you imagine having
Godolphin, Flavian and Brad Cox and the the odds going the other
way with the with the quality horse that's going on three
straight wins, right? That's a great point right now.
Yeah, #9 Everland right here is 30 to 1:00 in the morning line
is right now 35 to one. Is this an A?
Usually, yes. Bourbonet Oaks hasn't yet been a
good predictor for success in the Kentucky Oaks.
Abel Sedillo though. Dude.
Right now I I don't. I don't.
I don't want to be the wise guy guy and Eric Foster.
I don't want to be the wise guy guy.
But they picked off the last race on Saturday night at
Churchill Bounce. It was a claimer.
I get it. It's a nay for me.
But this? This if this horse runs third or
something, I wouldn't be stuck. Now Abel Sadia, when he was
riding on the West Coast, he was extremely good.
He he got hot there and and then he transferred his tack to back
east here. But I think Abel Sadio is a very
good jockey and you know on a in a race like this, I don't think
you can really discount anyone. I don't think she's going to
win, but I do like Abel Sadio. Jillian Lap rose on top of the
10 into Champagne here with Ian Wilkes as the trainer. 30 to one
is the as the current odds as well as the morning lot odds.
Let's try to do this one kind of quick.
Yeah, I'll go nay again. Two turns seems to not be her
thing, but if you wanted to make the case for second time trying
two turns, maybe it works out. My bomber Here's my that.
This is my bomber. And and the champagne.
I like it. Ian Wilkes Leparou.
I think she likes his track, he likes the way she's been
training. Boom.
Another horse is being bet of the other way which is
surprising me. Is a Ways and Means. 5 to one
shot. Tyler and Chad Brown, we're
starting morning line 5 to 1 now 7 to one with Ways and Means.
Yay or nail. Ways and Means.
I don't have her in my handicapping.
I don't like her as much as the other horses.
I just don't. But everything about her makes
sense second time routing, second time off the layoff Here.
It's Chad Brown and Tyler Gaffilio.
Tyler won this race last year. I don't know why she's not on my
handicapping, but I think she's probably like 5th, 6th on my
list. Yes, you can win.
For sure, of course. Any of them can win, but I'm a
I'm a nay on this one. I don't think that she's got the
means or the ways to get. It done.
There it is. The 12 horse start off at 12 to
one is now 18 to one. This is power squeeze.
Yay or nay on power squeeze? Power Squeeze is a horse that
can be there. I think I've got her in one of
my supers. We watched her on the track the
other day. She got major attitude.
I like that. 33 this year if. Somebody in the double digit
odds in this race for the morning line wins.
It's going to. Be all right.
I like it. The 13 horse is a horse that we
all saw won the Breeders Cup Juvenile Philly in Santa Anita.
This is just FYI. Bill Mott Junior Alvarado
started off 9 to twos, now 7 to 2.
Will this horse be the favorite at the at the start of the Oaks?
Yes. I think, I think, yes.
I'm, I'm with him, I think. Yes.
So this is a yay for everybody or?
Just FYI, she's going to be there.
Leslie's rose with Irad and Todd Fletcher started off 4:00 to
1:00 in the morning. Line is now 7 to one.
What do we think about Leslie's Rose?
I agree with Dan Hillman, who was on with us last hour.
I think she's an unbelievably good contender.
The good thing about how they run and how the course is
configured here, starting right here at the 8th pole right in
front of us in Section 322, she's going to have time to make
a move from the 14 that she wants to make.
Now she's been a near the front of the pack horse.
It's going to give her a chance to make that move outside of
some other horses that are not interested in that kind of trip.
So I think she's absolutely Nicola.
Near the front of the pack, horses have won just about every
race. I love it.
All right, so our Pretty Woman is the horse that drew in when
the one scratched. And lots of times we get a horse
that draws in that you know will come in at 31 or whatever else.
This horse looks like a horse that should have been here the
whole time, just didn't have the points. 15 to one on the morning
line. Now 16 to one as Buston and
Rosario, who do you like on this one?
What are you talking about? 16 to one now on this.
Horse. Retrieval by 3/4 of a length,
What are? We doing this is a player,
right? We're betting across the board.
That's what we're doing. Yeah.
I I. If you got the gold book and you
were set up before today, you got an e-mail from me this
morning about this horse. I sent an e-mail about this.
Yes, yes, yes, absolutely. 16 to one's absurd.
That's a. Actually so power squeeze or or
our pretty. One our Pretty Woman.
Not even close. All right.
I mean, I but you got two live long shots right there.
Two live double digits, yes. Yeah.
Yeah, love it. Yeah, I'm.
I'm with you guys. Yeah, very live, very live.
Long shot. Because remember last year wet
paint, we talked about her a lot like we talked about Tarifa this
year and she just terrible trip. The 14 horse field just happens.
Right, pretty much. She just got the jump on her and
it was over. It was over.
So I mean our Pretty Woman could be that horse.
She likes to be out front and she's won twice on slappy
tracks. I I don't 16 to one is absurd.
That's money before they saw the track.
Danny Brewer, a very popular bet.
I'm going to put you on the spot right here, is the Oaks Derby
double. How would you play it?
You know I would play it probably you'd throw a couple
favorites in there and a couple long shots.
I like Tarifa. I think maybe our Pretty Woman,
you know you you throw it like to throw a couple favors, a
couple long shots in in both on both days tomorrow.
I think Fierce's is the favorite that you play.
And as far as the long shots, you know, hey, I'm, I'm a Mystic
Dan guy. The Oaks Derby double, I
actually try to just hit two long shots and I understand it's
a $2030 kind of bet for me. And I'll take, you know, like in
our Pretty Woman or a power squeeze, right?
And a couple of others that I know are not going to be Tarifa
that are not going to be in that group and throw them at the top
of the ticket and then use the bottom ten horses in the derp,
something like that. And then essentially take the
bottom 10 * 220 bucks times 330 bucks, that kind of thing.
I know it's a $2030 bet, but if I hit it, boy, that's going to.
Hit it. It'll pay exponentially.
And that's what you have to be willing to do, is throw 20 or 30
bucks out there with the understanding, hey, I may not
get it, but if I do hit it, whoa.
Whoosh. Having a steak dinner.
More to steak dinner? There you go, Danny Broer.
