All right. Welcome to an Oaks edition of

the horse racing Happy Eyes of. Course, we have to go on air.

right now is Lane Gold, who's looking at us with his disdain

of how poor Americans we might as well just be kneeling for the

next. Time.

I can see the Statue of Liberty whenever I want, you jerks here

in Kentucky. What a ridiculous, folks.

Louis, it's a little bit outside of was listening to Jude

Redfield this morning and he gave the stat, OK, that's 60 out

of 150 Kentucky Oaks. We've had measurable rain.

So it's 40% of oaks. It's wet.

So he called it Kentucky Soaks. What I thought was a Mark Pope

joke. But all of that it wasn't.

It wasn't right. So yeah, so we're here.

It's a. Wet track one of my.

Favorite things And it takes over doing this right now.

But is the bugler playing the anthem?

Absolutely. It's up there for sure.

We actually got a. We should remember that always

happens at 10:00 on a little. Come on, a little.

Later. It's not everybody's fault what

it is. Secrecy.

Yeah, fantastic. It's it's going to be

interesting to see how this crowd rolls in today.

We've already got some spectators in the stands.

I believe the track doors open at 9:00.

I would say there's a good couple thousand people here

already. Yep.

Probably. I mean that's probably.

Especially underneath, there's people walking around that

aren't out. Here we are.

Not gonna get in the rain. It's not raining right now.

That's right. And I know our heavy rain is out

of here. We might get some hit and miss

showers as the day goes on. Yep, it looks like the track is

going to improve, they seem. Very unconcerned here about the

track. Very, very much.

Especially by the time we get to say, you know, while we're on

air, they're hoping the Latroy end is over, let's say between a

good and a muddy track, something like that rather than

the, I mean, they got sealed slop right now, we got to call

it what it is, but yeah, no, hopefully by the oaks

especially. And that launcher end is

something that we will have here for you.

We'll go take will go off right before we go off the air.

It's it's my favorite race of the day.

It also loaded and they did take the fourth race off the turf,

the non stakes. Yeah.

And what did you see yesterday? What you learn about the track,

I thought. Up the turf course before the

rain, it was interesting, was playing like a fair turf course.

We had a race especially where in the, you know in the in the

the two turn main event after Bango lost and got squeezed by

two horses. But we'll leave that one alone.

Carl Spackler wins. Coming from off.

But the horse that set the pace was right there too.

So we got the fair race right, we got the horse that set the

pace, we got the closer and both of them were right there at the

end of the finish line. I always say on this show when I

cap horse racing, there's turf races, excuse me, I try to pick

out the best closer and the best front runner.

And yesterday both of them finished 1/2.

And in my mind that. Means the turf course is playing

fair. We'll have to see how it plays

after this amount of rain because it we got a lot of rain.

Lot of rain and you, but you're right.

I mean, I think we talked about that this whole week, that turf

racing, they tend to run in a pack and you get a little

separation at the end. And we had an awesome finish

yesterday and I can't remember what race it was, but we almost

had a dead heat. It was a lot of fun.

I was actually very distracted because I was running that Derby

Festival event on the 4th floor. I'll tell you what, man, it's

actually starting to become one of my favorite.

Oh, how about that? I guess, I guess it's the one

day where I really just get up there and enjoy and just like

the decompress a little bit yeah.

And then and the the atmosphere up there was fantastic.

Our sponsorship team at Kentucky Derby Festival just did an

amazing job and and I think people we used to call that

celebrity day of the track. So back when the parade was on

Thursday, the the B less I think like the most famous celebrity

that I remember being out there was like Cruz of Polly from The

Big Bang Theory. So like anyway, you know they

they go on the parade or whatever else.

And it got a little to the after COVID, we basically said hey you

know we're going to move the parade to Sunday, which has been

an awesome change. And then we're going to take the

celebrities out of Celebrity Day of the track and it's become the

celebration for the staff and the board and the sponsors just

to be like, man, we're pretty much done and it was a great

festival this year, man, so we didn't have a lot of rain.

So it was awesome. Well, I was going to say,

actually, you didn't get Oak State weather for.

Most, yeah. We didn't.

We had great weather, if you will.

Yeah. Is that Jude that put that

together? Yeah.

I like that, yeah. Not a Mark Pope joke.

Mark Pope will rap about it later today, so we'll have him

at UP. Just kidding.

Actually to set up the show we will have Trainer went back when

at 10:30. Zach I know I need to send you

that number. And then at 11:30 a friend of

our our podcast here will have Daniel Minani's usually our go

to for Maryland. He will continue to be our go to

for Maryland of course and by the way.

We joke a lot on those episodes. We have a great time.

Those are fantastic. The Road to the Preakness

episodes are fantastic. Dan gets the show.

It's fantastic. He he's going to come on.

He's one of the very best handicappers in America.

Fair to say, no question. But he's also going to have a

lot of. Fun He just got awarded the old

Hilltop Award and we'll talk to him about that.

It is the highest award you can receive essentially in horse

racing media in the state of Maryland.

And so I I I can imagine as a guy who.

Pours himself into that, to that circuit.

Being recognized in that way is a real honor.

So we'll talk to him. About sure, absolutely.

We'll be out, by the way, we're doing freak.

The shows in two weeks, so we'll get you covered there as well.

And we're going to be stuffing among your pockets, going to do

some handicapping and we're, you know, we're getting the day

start off here pretty soon. I think we're about, what, just

under 1/2 hour from the first race.

Is that about right, Lou? We are at 21 minutes so. 21

minutes and they're going to be out here on this wet track and

it's definitely sloppy right now.

It's definitely sloppy. And yeah, I mean.

Yeah, check out that wet form and they, you know, check out

how they've been running over sloppy tracks or wet, you know,

off tracks essentially. You know, especially for these

earlier races, these non stakes races, the form tends to be a

little more difficult to pick out.

Maybe some of these babe races offer a chance, You know.

Find a find a price here. How do you think the the

addition of the new paddock will impact the crowd size?

Because they can't put as many people back there as they used

to, right? So.

The. The record for number of people

at the Derby that that's. Over Right.

That's never. That's never happening again.

American Pharaoh 2015. It's done.

That number is never going to be matched again unless they build

like they remove the barns and build another stanchion or

something, which I don't see happening.

I don't see that happening. Either.

But those days are done and what they move to is rather than

numbers, they move to cost and they just charge more to come

here now. And they've they've made the

change, they made the switch. And I think for them it's just

an easier thing to to navigate and number of people and areas

and all that sort of stuff. And look, it's it's a luxury

experience when you come to Kentucky Derby weekend.

So one of the things that you might see, and actually I don't

even think that, does that tunnel even exist anymore where

you can't. It does.

I walk through it on Tuesday, but you are not allowed to walk

through it. Today or tomorrow?

So the the tunnel that would go from the paddock area to the

infield is going to be blocked off.

I remember very specifically, for example, on orbs.

Orbs Derby in 2013 it rained for like 20 minutes.

It had been perfect. The rest of the day it rained

like 20 minutes and that was the wait before the turf race.

And then the. The Derby itself, and it was

just a deluge. Well, the people in the infield

all moved into the back of the grandstand here, so we couldn't.

Get in there. And there was a young woman next

to me the whole day, and I couldn't stand her.

She was off. She's just chirping the whole

time. But she was in a white dress and

she got stuck in the rain and I got to look right at.

Her and say that's. What you look like under that

dress and it was a beautiful moment of my love.

OK. Yeah.

Well, OK. All right.

So I'm actually. Because of the Enfield folks, we

don't get that anymore. Mike the Derby's done, buddy.

That's what I'm telling you. I'm actually really kind of

surprised that we don't have a ton of scratches going on this

first race. Like we said we do have the

three is scratched right here in the race one.

So as we're no, I'm sorry I'm looking at the wrong thing.

Really. They got the wrong thing on the

board here trying to get the scratches out for for race one.

Yeah. Just #3 is out.

Scratch. Yes, that is correct.

The three is scratch. I want to be really clear about

something too about the track condition.

It is, absolutely. Sloppy, but it's not.

It's not a swamp. I mean, it isn't.

It is not, no. The ceiling is working pretty

well. Look, is there going to be a lot

of you know? Splashback and that kind of

thing. Maybe take a front runner in

this stuff. I yeah, sure.

But look, we're talking about maidens to go here first.

I'm not at all sure that there's a, you know, past a past

performance to. Look at this is not yet the so

at the end of the day here Louis, did you have a quick pick

that you want to help with people here on this first you

know race. Absolutely. 18 minutes going

into it again. The three who was a 7 to 2 with

Joel Rosario, Steve Asmussen. I had that.

I had that horse third in my picks here.

I do have the four Sundance feature on top in the first

race. Let me see.

Make sure. That I still.

I still agree with that pick. Yeah, Ran.

Ran wants already at Turfway, so we're going to dirt here.

But a horse can handle that. You know get good footing on

that second time starter here for Tommy Drury he goes hit at.

15% in those kinds of races. I do love Luis Saez, of course.

They're they're batting 1000 at Churchill Downs together, 1000

Michael, you understand me in one race, but their last three

races they won two or three of those.

I'll stay with with the four horse. 17 to one that will never

hold up like that. Just early money coming in on

the three. But yeah, I'll play the four on

top here. I do think Penny Royal's got a

serious shot here. First timer for Steve Asmussen,

a daughter of curling. Here, that's the scratch.

Three's the scratch, Then why is it on the board and the one?

Is. I'm telling you right now that

the board is messed like the one toe board, that old school toe

board I screwed up. I don't know it was that so the.

Four is 4 to one. That's still a very good.

Price You should bet the four. 4/4 to 1.

The six is thoughtful. I have thoughtful of the second

spot here in the first. Race for, Soccer for.

Brad Cox, You get Flora Giroux like you just mentioned, 29

percenters here at Churchill Downs.

He goes with first timers and 25%.

He's been training well here at Churchill and at the training

track as well. This, this horse, by the way,

training in all different kinds of places.

The training track down the street here at Churchill Downs.

Itself of that Keeneland. I like that track Friday on a

wet day as well. All right, so we'll see what

happens in race one. They should be on the track here

shortly. Yeah, man.

What did, what did you learn this week?

Like? Well, we had some really good

interviews. It was a good time on the

backside. What were your big takeaways

this week? I think right now it it was that

turf course thing coming into the day and then we got this

yielding surface. I'm surprised they've left the

rail where it is, but. They do have bigger fields for

some of these races they have to have it and so it's it's, it's

set at what? What do you think?

8 feet maybe. That's probably right.

Yeah, about 8 feet. And so boy, how does that, I'm

wondering, Mike, how does that set up for tomorrow?

I thought you're going to ask, how does that affect the Dallas

Cowboys? How does it affect the Dallas

Cowboys? Does Dave Prescott's eventual

enshrinement in the Hall of Fame?

Affected by the 8 foot pole at Churchill?

Downs. Probably not.

You sure? ESPN told me it's everything.

It's going to be it is going to be really interesting like you

know we look at lanes and horse racing.

What lane is going to be live? Not lane gold lanes will always

laugh but we're talking about you know is the rail hot, is the

sort of winters coming off the rail are they coming from the

middle of the pack, are they coming from the far outside?

That's basically the three you need to worry about it in the

most basic way that's you know the the turquoise slopes a

little bit. A little bit.

Yep. And so.

Toward the, toward the, away from the crowd essentially is

how we put. It towards the inside of the

track. If you want to say so, how do

you? Feel I guess is the best way to

say. I'm sure that that being back

will help that drain. They'll take that rail out for

the bigger fields for the for the for.

The American term for the classic, Yeah.

And they're trying to try to protect that lane.

The other part is on, on a yielding course.

I think you lean on the European.

Horses today, right? I would if.

They're used to much, much more of those kinds of conditions.

Cooler day here today at Churchill Downs that it was

yesterday. The track was very, very fast on

the dirt side again, I thought. The turf course was really fair,

especially in that race that we mentioned there.

And so I look, I'll be interested to see the yielding

course. Today and I think.

The Europeans are going to have a big day.

The other things I've learned is that the track is very, very

fast right now. Now what a lot of people in the

public space and handicapping are wondering is what is this

rain going to do as far as the biases that we saw the last

couple of? Days those can change in a

really significant. Way Does this become a front

runners course? Does this become a closers

course? Watch today.

Today's the day to start watching.

Watch the early races tomorrow to get a clue for what you want.

To do don't feel like we're going to have enough time to dry

out where tomorrow to return back to the way it was the other

week. I'm not at all sure it'll go.

All the way back to what it was what I'm.

Saying is we might actually not have as fast of a course.

Tomorrow, which would allow some of those in.

I know this will sound counterintuitive.

It'll allow actually the horses on the front to have better

runs, right? Because the closers actually

need that speed to run into. So fast course for them is fine,

but a slightly slower course actually sets up for the the

front running horses. Yeah, it'll be interesting to

see how that plays out. I would definitely be paying

attention tomorrow morning to see that's what's what's

happening and. We'll get a ton of opportunities

for that year. It's absolutely correct.

So what Louie is talking about, you want to pay attention to

where the winners are coming from, the track rail mid outside

and are they staying up front? Are they slightly off the pace,

which means like maybe there's two or three horses ahead of

them, but then they can they call that stalking, but they're

kind of still they're forward and they can they can finish the

race strong or are they coming from the back of the pack and

their clothes are hard like to see just how the track biases

are are coming from that standpoint.

So, you know, if you're paying attention, it's a good way to

just kind of figure out. I agree.

Yeah, so this is. So how do you look at the

program because we actually try to educate a little bit on the

show. How do you look at the program

and determine whether or not a horse is a closer?

Very good. So a lot of ways that you can

look at the forum and on this show and Dale Newman works,

he'll be on 11:30 works with this company.

So around here at Churchill, you hear a lot about Brisnet, right.

So they they have their own sheets, right?

And they're a, they're a Johnny come lately.

Let's call it what it. Is here you understand?

Me, they've only been around for like 35 years.

That's. Yeah, they're only as old as me.

How about that? And no, we're we're using the

Daily Racing form here talking about that.

And in this case, if you look in the middle of the form, there's

a number in bold that is usually a 2 digit number.

If it is a three digit number, that's a very very fast horse.

So fierceness. Has a 110 speed.

Figure. In his.

Last race in the Florida Derby. That's a big, bold black number.

It immediately to its right is where he started in the gate.

So let me go to him. And try to get this as an

example. I'm on the Oaks Day stuff, so I

will use a different horse. I apologize.

So we'll go to the Kentucky Oaks and we'll use her even though

she's scratched out. Tapagenali is not going to run

today. The one horse she ran, a 78

speed figure last time in the fantasy, which was at Oakland

Park, she started in gate 8 out of 10 runners.

So 8 / 10 is not her, her odds, or anything else.

It's literally just that's. Where she started?

OK. She started by being in 7th

place, and there's a little 5 next to that.

The seven, the big one means the spot that they're in, in the

running order, and then the five means how many lengths they are

behind. Not the leader, but the horse in

front. Of them I like you how you're

talking to me like. You don't know this, Mike.

It's OK. You can admit it to the public.

You don't know what they say. It's OK.

Then. Then she was at 8th place, but

it was still 4 1/2 legs back. She ended up finishing third by

seven and a quarter lengths. Again, that's behind the second

place. Horse.

OK, And so in her case, that's where that is.

What we know about her is very little from that race.

But if you go to a the Edgewood is right before it, right?

One of the very finest turf course turf races in America for

three-year old Phillies. We'll run the American turf

tomorrow. That's the boys version of that

race. So the Grade 2 today.

Let's find a closer. There we go.

Junior Alvarado Okay This horse in its last race in the

Appalachian, ran second at Keeneland.

Okay, this is going to be part of our picks for sure.

That's why I'm using it. She ran an 85 speed figure.

Next to that she started in the eighth gate when there were 12

runners. She was at 11th place early.

And then she was in. 10th, then 7th, then third, then second.

That's how you know it's a closer.

The other way to look is that time form US pace right below

the name of the jockey. Early, Pace Late.

Pace. But if the late pace number is

significantly higher than the early pace number?

That means it's a closer. In this case, the early pace is

58. We go 49 ticks higher for the

late number. In one O 7 with MO fox there it.

Is. How about that little, nice

little education? Yeah, and a reminder.

It's not easy because the space between the yards is so distant

they. Do have kids have.

To walk really far to see their friends.

It's really difficult. Come on.

They do have. They do have horse trails that

you have. You have horse trails not far

from your house at all, Right. Oh.

Anchorage getting the chance. It's not just the guys who live

around here that have trainers that and can and can do.

All right, so getting back into some of the handicapping here at

some of the storylines going on, you know, we had a lot of great

interviews this week with lots of different kinds of

personalities. We got to talk with Danny

Gargan. He'll train the one horse and

the 20 horse now in the 19 hole, of course with resilience,

excuse me, with society, man in the 20 and door knock on the

inside door knocks one of those horses, we get to this point.

Every year there's always a buzz horse.

That's Honor Marie. We're going to talk to Whip

That. There are other horses that

we're trying to figure out what kind of form they're going to

have it so door knocks. One of these horses, the one

horse in the Derby tomorrow, 21 on the morning line.

We get Louis sighs. We get Danny Garden.

I really trust, Louis sighs at Churchill Downs.

I think it's really great here. A slow start to the open of the

meet, but he's run seven times. Hit the board.

And three of them. And again, we're talking about

big fields this week, right? So that's that's not a knock on

Louis sighs at all. It's just a what is going on

with with the field sizes here, hit the board three out of

seven, totally solid. Give you an idea.

He's got one win and seven starts.

Siliga for Lyon coming in to yesterday had one win in 10.

So it's that difficult in these larger fields to get those

things going as well. But door knocks, One of those

question marks, He's going to be down on the rail.

Historically, we looked at that one post as kind of a death

knell for the Kentucky Derby. We even saw some people scratch

out of the Kentucky Derby instead of running with the

auxiliary gate was still part of the equation.

But door knocks going to want to be part of the only speed and

Danny Gargan was very, very clear about this with us.

What's going to join us? In about 10 minutes I got caught

Door Knock might be that horse this year.

He's got good speed. The breeding makes sense.

He's a good magic Big Brown on the mom's side.

OK, wins the fountain of youth at a track in Gulfstream.

That is a good predictor for success at Churchill Downs,

right? And he beats fierceness in that

race, right? So is there?

Is there a chance he's the overlooked?

Horse this year. That could be I I still think

it's more like strong. He did not beat.

Fiercest in that race, I am mixing up my race.

Sierra Leone He beat Ladon Bro. He literally eliminated horses

from running in the Derby. Right, right.

Race. Yeah, Yeah.

I'm more on like the strongholds of Forgotten Horse, or maybe the

Never really even. Ever even.

Yeah. A zero buzz horse that's ever

existed. Yeah, right.

Especially when we're used to like you.

Like I just mentioned, I think of Gulf St.

Park as a good predictor of running here.

Let's say I need a Derby's a terrific predictor of success

here. Right.

So it's a very surprising thing that strongholds getting. #0 You

know, I just did a spot with Andy Sweeney in in Indianapolis

and and he said, hey, how's the Baffert thing going?

I said I We haven't talked about it.

Nobody's really at all. It's done.

People moved on, right? And and you know, so it's it's

interesting if you ask. Someone to have an opinion?

But no one brings it to you just, you know, just out of the

blue. And so I you know, you also

brought this up. Is this the friendliest Derby

ever? It might be the most likable

Derby. Rich got in.

Rich got in. Oh my goodness.

Already, good Lord, oh. Man, the one guy who doesn't bet

his name. Yeah, the one guy who didn't bet

Rich strike. Here's rich.

There we go. Just going to crush this a hole.

Gentlemen, hide your daughters. Rich is here.

Hide your sons all. Right.

So there we go. We are out here, but Door Knock

is one of those forgotten horses.

You're saying Stronghold? Yeah, I think Strongholder, even

just the Touch in a lot of ways, but we kind of debunked just the

Touch yesterday with the final fraction.

You know, I was talking about that after with with biscuit

during the 3:00 show and and I said the thing about that is

developing 3 year olds right now the final fraction theory is a

is a very effective tool for sure.

And if people don't know what that is, it is essentially a

measurement of how a horse runs the final Derby prep they're in

over the last 3/8 of a mile. Are they fast enough in those

3/8 of a mile to extend out to 10 furlongs?

Now we have a horse in this race in catching freedom who has

already run at the Preakness distance of a mile in three

sixteenths in the Louisiana Derby, right?

So we have a sense that he can make the distance almost with no

issue, right? Because he already did it.

We saw OK, but a horse like Justin Touch ran in a mile, and

an eighth needs to go another eighth of a mile.

You might not think it's that long, but Mike.

That eighth pole in front of us is a lot taller looking than the

the final than the the my. My fat ass takes a long way.

So it's not a small amount of distance, right?

Especially when you're running in a Sprint speed for already

for a mile over a mile, right? By the time you get to that

pole, you've run a mile and an eighth already.

The longest distance you've already run happens right in

front of us, right? And so it tries to figure that

out you. Know it's kind of funny when we

talk about that because like if you look at it like a track and

field athlete, they talk about that 220 being one of the

toughest races to run and that's basically what an eighth of a

mile is, right? So yeah, I mean, it's.

It's a weird in between. It's kind of what it is and and.

To the larger. Point and I'm glad that four got

home. We're already one for one today,

Mike, how about that? Well, none of that.

Just letting people know that 2nd lane off the rail was where

that came from up front the entire time.

Just going back to what we talked about, OK?

But the other thing we talked about is, can front runners be

the thing today? Especially in sprints.

We already saw it in the first race.

We'll have to keep watching that, of course.

Wire to wire. But wire to wire for sure, with

that one really fine ride, frankly there in the first race

as well. Glad to get that.

Horse home paid just over 8 bucks.

We'll take that. Looking at the track, though,

Louis. Oh, Kylie Minnow.

I mean, they really all stayed pretty close, a lot closer to

the rail than anticipated. Yesterday, being in the middle

track was very advantageous. That's correct.

Yeah. So that's what people are

talking about as far as the track files to try to figure

that out as the day goes along. So, yeah, being out more in the

middle of the track, that was really the question there.

But to answer the trivia question from earlier, did we,

did we, what was the longest odds in the Kentucky Oaks to

win? Do you remember?

I can't remember, Oh. Lemons Forever 47 to one paid

$94.00 at the window for a $2.00 win place and so yes hey if you

really likes that's. With the last, the last one

fraction in the OR the last furlong and the last three

furlongs, he's 3rd, 4th. 4th OK, that's awesome.

So right. Yeah, it's right.

There I like endlessly. Is he in there at all?

Endlessly, he's third. Oh, how about that?

Interesting. Yeah.

So yeah, if you like domestic product by the way, that's the

the field, because you pick up Irad, so it's no drop in jockey

from Tyler, right? You pick up Irad Ortiz Junior,

the Eclipse winner of. Course, and in my mind, that's a

horse that the Tampa Bay Derby so hard to handicap because the

field isn't great. It's so long ago, but no pace to

run into it. He still makes his own race, he

still runs into it, right? He still does that.

And so it looks slow on paper, but when you go back and

actually time the very end of that.

Race. That's when you get into the

weeds with this. Stuff, but it's the fact.

Right catching freedom's. The same way, and that's why I

like catching. Freedom.

Yeah, so. My top two are third and second

in the final fractions and I didn't know that going into

handicapping them. So it kind of cemented how I

feel about those two horses. Glad to see them in the top.

It doesn't really matter where you rank on that list.

You just have to be under 13 on that last furlong and then under

38 on that last three furlongs, right.

So yes, another horse that's on there, W Saratoga.

Junior. That guy doesn't need to do

He's got a great man, bun and chest hair.

His wife is beautiful. He's got everything.

Dante wants to be that. Yeah, he does, right?

And you hear from Saffy and I ask him.

I ask every trainer. Do you allow yourself to dream

about the winners? And they all say the same thing.

Yes, I have to dream. Otherwise, this job is such a

slog. That I can't.

You have to have the dream. It's such a difficult job.

It's so time consuming. It's so physically demanding.

And then you get Dante on. It says the exact same.

Thing. Yeah.

And he's an assistant trainer for a man who has 13 starters

this. Year I'm going to go, I'm going

to say that most successful people are that way.

I think that's right. You know, not just in training

or anything. I mean, that's a life.

Lesson The best days are coming. Yeah, and those two guys had

that in common. I love that about horse.

If you don't, if you don't dream right, then it can't be

possible, right? You got to, you got to, you

know, it's got to, you got to dream at first, right?

And then turn into reality. So hey.

His name is Whit Beckman. He is the trainer of Honor

Marie. He'll be running in the Derby

tomorrow. Wait, how does that

introduction? Even sound?

How great is that? Yeah, it's kind of surreal to

hear those two words. You know, they're saying this

together. But yeah, it's a it's a cool

thing to hear and it has nice ring to it.

Yes, years. Years to come as well.

There you go. Yeah, No, that's right.

First of many. We we know that for sure.

Otter Marie in the race tomorrow in the Kentucky Derby.

What can you tell us about this horse?

I I wonder if he's the buzz horse or if people just like

you. I can't.

Figure it out. I mean, I hope he's the buzz

horse because they think he's got a legitimate shot to win,

but you know, if they like me all the same.

He is in the top five for the final fractions theory.

We were actually just going over some of those statistics.

Do trainers pay attention to things like that in determining

where to run races is the did the stats come up like that or

do you just have a side say I've got a 2 Turner.

I know the breeding, you know honor Marie, you know a son of

honor code. Obviously he's going to be able

to get the distance. Is it more of that kind of stuff

or do you? Take all of it into into account

determining. Yeah, I think when you have a

horse like this, I mean obviously you know you have a

two term pedigree early 2 year old.

So you know you have your sights set on you know the kind of top

here, you know races as three as a three-year old and you need

the horse to take you there. You know, once you kind of get

to that spot, I think when you're kind of picking, you

know, your spots to run, you might look at a few of the

internal dynamics of races and how these horses are run.

You know, to figure where they're better suited to.

You know, get the point to get to the Derby.

But for the most part, you have the horse to take you there.

There. The seven horse tomorrow is

Honor Marie. I am standing next to a St.

X alum. Go ahead and gush.

I mean, yeah, well, Mike Adolfo here, anyway, you you won the

Kentucky Jockey Club. How hard is it to win a prep

race in November and actually make it to the starting of the

Kentucky Derby? I mean, I honestly, every time I

get a horse into a starting gate anyway, I kind of look at it as

a small miracle, just because, you know, so much goes into the

nation on so many levels. But you know, from that point in

November to get to this point where we just had our final day

of training is like, I mean, it's a huge relief and burden

because there's just so many days in between and everything's

got to go, you know, perfectly fine.

You don't have much room for air in a race like this.

You know, it happens once. They can only meet a certain

age. So, you know, you know, we're

just fortunate that everything kind of works out.

I, like you know, faded hand racing gods are in, you know, in

favor of the horses that making the gate.

You had him in the Louisiana Derby.

He finishes second to a very likely contender, very top of,

you know, probably single digit kind of odds in this race and

catching freedom. What did you like about that

run? What did your horse learn

running a mile and three sixteenths?

Down there at the fairgrounds. Well, I think you know for him

we've kind of seen his running style as when he wants to set

himself pretty pretty far back. And I don't think it's something

we have to necessarily be resigned to.

I know more horse has a little more speed, but if we have to

kind of improve position, if there is a pace that doesn't

necessarily you know, lead to you know, deep closer, you know,

kind of finding that final, you know that you know the final

kick to kind of get there. You know we got to got to look

at you know how close or how far away we need to keep the horse,

you know in that first turn and just kind of seeing how the pace

goes. We talked to Danny Gargan on

Monday about society man and Frankie Dettori getting them

out. One of the things he liked about

Frankie getting them out was his experience with very large

fields in Europe. Do you feel the same way about

Ben Curtis getting them out here?

Absolutely, absolutely. And I think too, just with the

style my horse runs, you know, kind of being a, you know, deep

clothes and sorts and, you know, kind of having to weed his way

through traffic. I think experience in these

large fields, the Europe is kind of the standard will absolutely

help And kind of some of the poise, you know, especially

early on in the race when things just get Jarred around, stuff

around you may not have the perfect position and just kind

of having, you know, the ability to overcome a little bit of that

mentally and not get, you know, in any kind of, you know, panic

state or anything. Honor Marie, his trainer is

Whit. Beckman joins us here on the

All right, enough. About the horse, let's talk

about your experience and how you got here to the Derby.

You're a little kid growing up in Louisville.

Is is the Derby, as a trainer, even on the radar for you?

I mean, I think when I got into this in the 1st place, I think

Derby was always that kind of prize at the end of the tunnel.

You know, it's one of those races for me as a, you know,

Louisville and growing up here and going to the Derby every

year and just how, you know important and special the

community. It's always been something

that's been very close to me and you know, to be here is a little

surreal, especially to kind of get here in a, you know, fairly

short of kind of opening up on stable.

But at the same time, you know what we prepare for.

I've had tremendous experience in the, you know, the people

I've worked for top Fletcher, Chad Brown and Hardy, and being

around these top tier horses and just kind of seeing what goes

into the management, you know, the preparation and the getting

the race like this. Louis, there's nothing more

Kentucky than the Beckman family.

I mean, Whitson, horse racing, Bows and bourbon.

I mean, that's it. It's crazy.

You got it all set. How did you actually get your

start in horse racing? You know, I kind of out of high

school, you know, I graduated in 2000 and I did go down to

College in Charleston briefly. Then, you know, went to the

University of Louisville. I get college, you know, college

try a few times. It really was fun in any gaining

any traction and what was kind of bringing me, you know,

passion or connection or anything.

And then just by happenstance, I started kind of helping out

around some stables from Barnes and just really kind of got the

bug. And I just took a job out at the

racetrack for a guy named Walter Bender and it just kind of

blossomed from there. And I ended up getting into some

really just top you know, tier jobs, very high profile jobs

with top trainers and just kind of rolled from there.

Well, Wood Beckman with us. He's got Anna Marie in the Derby

tomorrow. We talked to several trainers.

This week we even talked to Dante Lowry.

He's the he's the exercise rider on West Saratoga.

He wants to be a trainer when he grows up.

He. Wants to be whipped back when?

When? He grows up.

How about that? Do you allow yourself to dream

about that Kentucky Derby's winter circle?

Yeah, I think we've all, you know, you know, when you go to

bed at night, you kind of try to put yourself to say when you had

dreams and kind of try to put yourself at the end of the end

of the experience. You know, feel the feelings

involved. And you know, it's one of those

things, I don't know that you can really, you know, prepare

for just how how that's going to feel, but well.

And I you know what I did. I did the professional thing.
