Look Back at the Derby & Look Forward to Preakness
Full Transcript
Alright, welcome to another episode of the horse-racing
happy hour Louis. We want to reset a little bit
doughy. The week after Derby always
needs a reset Michael. I agree.
We kind of want to make sure that we stay connected with what
we're all about. And so for our listeners, number
one thing I think we're all about is making horse racing fun
and approachable like that is if we had a mission statement I
think that would be it, right? We make horse racing fun and
approachable and we hope You win a little money along the way.
Sure that thing that's perfect. So you know we kind of got away
from our drinking games from making it fun talking about some
of the other issues. Sure, we're always going to
handicap there, there's going to be a handicap part of it, but we
got to thinking I do those roots, I agree.
I think we gotta remind people that we are look, look, people.
This is this is a show but it's a drinking game as well and we
have some rules on this show. We have some rules on the show.
People need to be aware of. All right, first rule to show.
Mike is what first rule the show.
We're going to go the dad joke, I'm gonna drink a beer.
That was not one, you had on your sheet, it is not yet.
So, we're gonna drink after course.
Anytime there's a dad joke, Zach will put the dad joke, hashtag
on the screen. He's not ready right now, so
he's shaking his head at me. So they'll be the dad joke thing
and of course that's a drink Okay.
All right. So, what's next one?
I think anytime there's a humble brag.
Anytime someone brags about something.
There it is, everybody. Here's the dad jokes, tragic,
and humble brag, and drank drank.
I think another one, if I mention a king Guillermo sure a
field pass or another horse, that wasn't great, but that if
there's even have fun as well as muscle, that's a good name.
And we, I think that, if you, if there's needless parchment,
yeah, have to drink of anything. You have a Of a trainer of a
track of a city that we're about to visit.
What's up? Baltimore has dispersement from
me saying that wet paint would have to fall down the whole
field and and I said me, she had no shot at winning.
So, yeah. And again, if we think a horse,
is the class of the race that that horse is going to Rio
stretch out, season all, that's it.
Mmm-mmm-mmm talking about Peter Pan this weekend to it.
Stretch house, isn't it? New York.
When I tell you what? Oh Peter Pan not like the kind
that you use for your dog. But you know, I don't erase I
use gif. Then of course, if anyone says
classical class, if you think there's a horse that's heading
head and Tails above lengths ahead, Dan links ahead is Dan
would say on our show, if he's like, said Mike, then we'll go
with a classical class and Drake.
So anytime you hear those things go ahead and drink.
We have had listeners, tell us that they they're, they're not
drinkers. So they got a milk and cookies.
Let's do whatever you got to do, have some ice cream, that's wise
matter. Okay, Snickers bar.
Yeah, just have whatever your whatever.
You're going to have with us along the shaman Godly that's
like I'm not that big of a drinker either.
I have a decent bourbon collection but I don't
necessarily drink that much so I probably really usually only
take a drink during the show, done a normal week so sure.
It's just the way it is. All right, what else?
But have some fun with us play along.
You can also find us on you find us on Twitter during these shows
at horse, happy hour, if you're watching anywhere else.
If I decide, which will be able to answer to that as well.
See your comments on there, which is actually kind of cool.
As we actually get the comment. Yep.
Coming through stream yard. So we can add the 100% well,
Challenger there while. And we'll make sure that all
that is available to you as well.
Just so people know our travel schedule, we will be in
Baltimore next week, if you're going to be the Preakness or on
black-eyed. Susan day shoot us.
Something a horse-racing happy hour gmail.com or add horse a
PR, and Twitter. So, we'd love to feature, has a
show next week will be Friday, Saturday Friday 10:00 to noon
and then 11:00 to 12:30 on Saturday.
So we will be the little simulcast with ESPN radio.
So yeah. We good great stuff there,
appreciate them. By the way they made, they
carved out a 90 minutes for us on Preakness day and so that was
not on the schedule and program director over there or guy Andy.
Make sure that happens. We really appreciate Daniel, be
sitting in, with us for those shows from Denver, and so,
that'll be fun as well. What I mean, what would they
played? Otherwise, like college
baseball. No at 11:00 on Saturday is ESPN
national, okay? So yeah.
Oh, it's terrible. Yeah, it's like Riri recapping
the NFL draft, and that Matt Jones, usually, too.
Sounds like yeah. Yeah, yeah.
It doesn't matter. Yes.
Well, I do think we need to have some Derby weekend.
Takeaways, I think we saw some really great performances from
great horses outside of the Derby in the Oaks, but we always
do Caravelle, still in her grade form.
We saw Cody's wish bounce back like he hadn't taken any time
off. Like, great really great.
Both of those sprinters going to be a problem all year, do we
think? Which could turn into Al this
year. Matali might be a little bit of
stretch especially since you know I think spring we're
talking five straight hundred-plus Beyer speed
figures. That's true.
Well I mean he's flying and he's a sprinter on that front too,
so. But I think we're going to, you
know, he's headed for another close award, you know, I think
that's right. That's it seems good and help
you'll go through and you'll get to the Breeders Cup and we'll
see what he does on California. And you know who else do you
like in that Springer glass really, you know, compared to
him, right? I don't.
Yeah. We had and we had major
sprinters retired last year, right?
So that class really opened up as far as Cody's wishing a bunch
of dudes if we're talking about, that's pretty classy.
So I do think, you know, with him in most of his races Class
Clown class. Yeah it's one of the things
actually. I was thinking about.
Yeah, and I'll drink for you. You just making sure that Zach
not Stone up. Is the GBC.
All right, mr. Zack alone.
So it was one of the things actually.
I was thinking about today, as I was doing, you know, getting set
up for the show. I was like, just kind of going
back and look at those what we vote on for the eclipse Awards
and just kind of taken those races that fit that mold and
just let the credit, you know, just start separating them out.
Like, hey, here's our spring races or major spring races all
that kind of stuff and just paying attention to it that way
and and then you know, hopefully having a little bit more idea on
the rankings. When so, when it comes time to
vote, we're prepared for it. So instead of having Hoosier
Philly as Champion two-year-old Philly wagon will didn't age.
Well either she was good, she was gonna be talking about.
What is your feeling? Yeah, those Wagon Wheel.
They're just terrible through three rolls, right?
I mean, it is what it is, but you're voting for two-year-old
not for what they're going to do in this airing very true.
It's not like a preseason poll. That's right.
I would say, you know, the takeaways for me from the two
big races on the weekend, 30 braces.
That was a crappy, Oaks the fields terrible.
It's not good, what? We finally have a bad class of
Phillies, right? Matter is I'm gonna if she can
In use on with her, you know. Brilliant.
Well, she's for so she's actually the older spreads on
saying but I don't like the distaff, the older going into
that British guy Simon sheet, that's hard to lose.
And so I that group is not great and then I do think we're lucky
that we still have you know, secret Oaths and some of those
other horses are sticking around.
How does that mean a pretty mischievous?
Can't win a bunch of races I think she can ab sure.
Yeah and then I do think we have at least a couple red
carpet-ready other horses in that group that in the acorn can
be really interesting in a mile right over the one turn.
But I don't know why you wouldn't go ahead and turn her
back. You know if your Brendon Walsh
cool runner in the acorn I think she'll be totally fine with that
company. Yeah yeah Acorn and actually you
know we'll see what that I really hope we get chain skip
therefore that day. Yeah we're gonna yeah.
You know, and I gotta admit, we worked your tail off for a lot
of that stuff for Forte, okay? And it was, it was just
disappointing for me to have him scratch out.
Well, talk about, I mean, was it was just disappointing for him
to scratch and all right. I want I want to bring something
to the show. Yeah, I think the allowing the
state Steward to do. The scratch is as bad, a mistake
as Donovan, McNabb a couple years ago, not knowing that NFL
games can end in ties, like not knowing that rule and asking for
clarification when your Todd freaking pledge or the day after
means that you didn't do your homework.
And you did not know the rule, because if you scratch that
horse, 10 seconds before the state Stewart says something,
you're on an in the Preakness and then you're running in the
Belmont and they blew both of those races.
And I want to be really clear about how He's out for 14 days
from training, he has to pass a blood test and have a good
workout before we can do anything in the blood.
Test takes 7 to 10 days to come back.
We are talking about a 20-day buffer that is a full week after
the Preakness and then you want that horse to turn around and
run a mile and a half. It ain't happening.
Well that's a good taken. Especially like we're seeing
that like we're seeing like whether or not we're going to
see some of the other scratched horses kind of come back right
away. And because usually when you
have a type of tracers going to run forever in the Belmont and
an angel of Empire that I mean I just I I think they've set
themselves up for a massive failure.
A because if this horse, think about it, he wins for grade ones
coming at. I know he got dq'd out of once.
He's down to three. If he comes in wins the
Preakness wins a classic race, even if he doesn't win, the
Belmont that changes his breeding forever man.
Yeah, it really does. Because then you've seen okay,
two-year-old Champion. He was great.
Then comes back wins a classic race in the spring.
This to me is a catastrophic error on the, on the part of my
pleasure. And frankly, at that point you
got to go to your owner and say, dude, you got to back off here.
You got to, let me make The decision here.
You need to trust me as the trainer as the game planner, but
he didn't know the game plan. No.
And I think we actually started what the buzz that we heard
that, we heard that they were going to scratch him on
Thursday. Yes.
And then we started hearing Buzz about the Stewart's potentially,
scratching him late Friday, right?
Does that sound right to you? Yep.
So it was not a surprise that don't think to anybody that
pleasure should have known that that was on the possibility list
and yeah, you're exactly right. I mean, it shocks me how little
when it comes to those. Of things, whether it's
substance is or whatever else. And I know that the drugs can
matter from track to track but this is the Lions deferring it
over time because they want the wind at Soldier Field.
There you go. It's that bad, man.
This is a terrible. I mean, it is a legitimately a
legitimately terrible long-term decision for this horse.
I'm good Horseman by the way, of course by people that are a
Horseman and a great owner. Yeah, very few people, don't
more money into the game than micro pulley.
He cares in a very serious way. Now, the only thing I'll say is
He's a New Yorker. One went 1-2 in the Belmont with
his horses last year would not be surprised if they try to
figure it out. But boy, you're putting that
horse in a tough spot, man, that kind of layoffs.
And I don't know that part actually bothers me a little
bit. I don't know where you could run
them after that, though. Well, the same time, you know,
it's because you want to hit America at least when the
Traverse then right. Is the idea.
It is the Kentucky Horse Racing commission, that sets the
suspension, the Maryland, Jockey Club.
And and naira have to choose the whether or not they want to most
the time they do. They almost always over honor.
Yes, you know, it's where they normally honored but they don't
have to honor the suspension, you're right.
But as you said, usually they do so I think that's what's gonna
happen here. So it'll be interesting to see
but yeah, I mean, it took a little I'm done.
I'm gonna be real honest. It took a lot of the windows
sales for me. I didn't I didn't have a, I
didn't enjoy things as much, and I did two things wrong.
The first thing is, I never got over the fort a scratch as far
as my handicapping. Sure.
Sure, I never adjusted it. The second thing I didn't do is
use the only horse in the race from the Florida Derby.
The best predictor for success of the Kentucky Derby.
What are we doing? Yep, there's a terrible Choice
by me. Terrible mistake.
And so I know I look Looking Back Now.
For me that those are bad gaps and those should never happen
when what I talk about these things all the time and then I
don't follow through on them as just Onyx.
I want to just look at the pace though because I think one of
the things that was kind of crazy for me is for the second
straight year. I did not think we had a rabbit
in this race. Sure.
You know is reincarnate. Going to turn into a great one
turned with me. I mean, who knows?
I mean did we not see a bunch of horses in this race that
probably should have been in the past, a mile?
Yeah. Or even Seven, seven furlongs
races, you know? I mean Cyclone Mischief is in
fifth place. One, two, three, four, five,
six. He's in sixth place at the
quarter mile pole, they go 22 and to man.
Yep. And that is, I mean, I mean, get
a Turf Sprint that's fast. Verifying was up front all the
way to the third, 3/4 of a mile. Yep.
You know, you had so verifying up their kings Barnes was up
there. We can, Carney was up there.
It's to Phil's was the only one that was able to stay up, you
know, basically be upfront, stay up front, you know, it's gonna
be interesting to see how many milers how many how Who joins
Cody wish maybe in that, in that Sprint.
Mmm, does pulls the Whitmore, you know, sure because those
crazy fractions also helped Masia time a jewess 16th.
And then, you know, started making his move around us to
say, man, that's not how you want to win the Derby.
That's not a winning running style and Irving.
What was before the point system, it was the way you want
to do before. The point system was in place.
We're going back to something like that.
It's crazy. It is, it is, it is, it is still
just shocking to me. Again, before John Asher, passed
away, you could basically look at certain Trends and you knew
that the person the horse had to be a stalker had didn't
necessarily to go wire to wire, but had probably had to be in
the top four top five had to, you know, win, 100 Point Race be
undefeated, a three-year-old like all these things happened
and the favored. One the favored one, the favored
one, the fair one ever since the racists been just different.
I don't know if trainers have figured out how to steal points
and get horses in the field, you know, obviously.
Now that we're going out to fifth place that changes things
to. It's it's just it's different.
The only thing that is now held true for a massive majority of
derbies is you want to be in first or second at the eighth
pole and major was in second place at the eighth pole.
Yeah. And then did the passing right
there? And that was, that was all she
wrote. And by the way to feels is,
first of all, right? Yes, yes.
And the to them finish 12, that's a, that's a sign, right?
Okay, by the way, just pet me. Derby pick win.
Place show. That's what we've learned about
this show and I'll admit. Now, I got to take the Jeff
Ruby's as a serious freaking prep race to filtering great.
Look, all code, horse is a great horse, a really good horse, and
he's gonna win some races and somebody's gonna pick some stuff
off, kind of the way that, you know, mid-majors can compete in
the NCAA now because they can get players, they couldn't get
before. Yep.
Like these, all seven are cases Series race man, right?
Well, I'm not, it's not that, it's just that it's still.
When you look at the track, the track is a mid-major track,
right? Sure, sure.
Four horseshoes. A mid-major track, all those
things. Are we Of horseshoe.
We, you know that Rachel but at the end of the day like we're
seeing horses, get started out there or even when prep races
out there and it's it's kind of cool to see you know you don't
know. They don't have to follow those
traditional routes. So I'm looking up right now.
If the Stephen Foster is 3 and up or if it's 44 and up only I'm
a I am worried that we're not going to see Mage not seen for
what. Oh I hope Mage.
I hope mage If you, if he wins the Preakness and goes on to the
Belmont, I hope we don't pull another justify.
But only reasons a three-year-old, the stress on
the bone. So Mage.
Yeah. Oh, absolutely.
And that we don't see that horse again after the Belmont.
I'd love to see how this horse continues to mature.
I think we can see a great horse in the fall and you know, and if
you listen to my interview yesterday with dr.
Burrows has. He talked about that?
Very popular by the way already today.
It is thousands of downloads. Yeah.
Awesome, dr. Rosen who's going to be a friend
of the show? And I think we're going to have
on several times just a wealth of knowledge.
Knowledge has been around horses.
Like I said he worked on freaking Secretariat, right.
He was with Swale who surprised by the way?
Obama were humblebrag going for Greg broseph.
Yeah and not for me but but the thing I love about it and this
is the kind of a cool story. He didn't tell him it on the
show but my favorite Derby horse is Hulu.
And you know, if you remember Winning Colors charismatic.
Okay? My clothes.
Yeah, you know, 8899 kind of thing.
So, charismatic breaks his leg in the Belmont and dr.
Burrows, actually just happened to be there on the rail, he was
the first person first vet to get to, to get to charismatic
and so it's kind of cool. So, yeah, you know, he talked
about it a lot about how important it is for those horses
to kind of get that stress on those bones to strengthen those
bones so that they can do, In. It's it's going to be one of
those things. I mean, he, he actually
considers a lot of that changing of the surfaces is a big one.
As far as while we're seeing some of these horse realities, I
will say, I think they've done totally right by Mage and the
fact that they're waiting until tomorrow to even make a decision
on shipping to Baltimore. I think shows that they have
that horses, do very active, Churchill Downs.
This afternoon, he'll be out there tomorrow again and I think
you'll get a very definitive answer from them that he'll
leave here. Sunday in the in the so weird to
say now. But they're driving them to
Baltimore because there's no, there's no horsey Express
anymore. And so he'll take that truck
down the road just like you and I will next week, but it's a
pretty dry by the way, I'm not mad about.
I love that drive so she got that gas mileage.
I'm not mad about other news, just to kind of hit on real
quick. The Breeders Cup announce their
winning. You're into British a challenge.
So, the Derby we get the point system.
To determine who the field is right there.
Breeders Cup has has always Winning your in races which I
think makes the sport just stupid.
Interesting for people trying to figure out who's going to raise
some reasonable. I love the Breeders Cup
challenge to yeah. Especially since, you know it
brings in, so they've done a very good job of branching, out
to Japan chili, lots of different places where you
actually have to pay attention, obviously a bunch of European
races. You'll have things like the
Shoemaker mile, but the sudha Keenan.
What I love is Breeders Cup to me is as Forward Thinking An
entity as we have in horse racing because they include
these these groups. So, like, you know, we watch the
Japanese flying to say and I need a couple years ago and just
smack people around about Breeders Cup Classic.
They might see it again and we might see it again this year Del
Mar and so I'm I'm liking how much they are not just focused
on North American European racing but also looking West to
Japan and trying to figure out or very East.
Well, well, you're right mean, they'll first one on the on the
list is To the first three are Japanese right Victoria miles on
May 14th. The Shoemaker Mi seen Anita and
then you the you get the yesterday just sudha Kenan.
Yes. But then you get the one in
Santiago right there. So yeah that's all I mean I
think you're exactly right there.
Taking it out there. Trying to get the world's best
in the Breeders Cup. The your they're having a llama
qualifiers, it's fantastic thing.
My parents have been all over South America so for our tenth
anniversary, 20th anniversary of the summer for for the planet,
me. 10th our tenth anniversary, went to Machu Picchu because she
always wanted to go. Okay, so what to Peru?
It's really the only place I've been in South America.
Very, I love. It was great.
My dad and mom went to Santiago Santiago de Chile.
So that's like the most modern amazing City they've ever been
to, huh? So apparently we need to go to a
clue. Be Pico de Santiago, I go watch
the gone. Premier Cru Pico Falabella, let
me know that I just realized that the Belmont Stakes is on my
anniversary. So we might have to have will
take the ladies with us. Yeah, we might.
Hey honey. We're going to New York for our
anniversary. Yeah, I can't hang out with you
on our anniversary for 10 hours. It is funny to watch Churchill
the like the Thursday after Derby.
The Way back when there's it was a nice crowd.
Is probably sure people there, whatever but they're all like
one section. Do you like the Twilight racing
on Thursdays? I do.
I do too. I think they say what you will
about Churchill but they figured out how to you know really make
horse racing accessible and some other day.
Anyway 12:30 on Thursday, there would not be 5,000 people there.
Absolutely not. But they literally five times
many people you get done with work and you can head over
there. You can they usually really good
beer specials and you know, there's worse days.
It's been Thursday evening. Yes for so I'll be there
tomorrow, we pick three. Yeah, every Friday that they're
open. Yeah, they show gets out at
noon. I love it.
I have my past. Excuse me.
I'm covering the races. Sorry Darrow's.
All right, so do but to answer your question, yeah, put a bow
on this part of the show. The winning is awesome.
Yeah, it's not hated you finished fifth in Japan now.
Did you win in Japan? So, you get a bunch of horses
that are winners. I love that about the Breeders
Cup. I think it's a great sister.
I would actually like to see Churchill move to maybe the
50-point races be, and they basically are winning or in,
right? We know that but we were pretty
close to having, you know, 45 points, almost didn't get you in
the Derby. This year, I would have liked to
say, you know what, it's not 50 points.
If you win the rebel, it's an actual winning.
If you're in your you, in the restaurant and guaranteed spot
in the gate, no doubt about your in the race.
What do you think about that ahead with 50 with a rebel?
Now, I'm not into that. You has to be one of the
Confidence Game skipped. All those races.
Because he knew he was in King Guillermo skipped all those
races because re cousin, I don't, I don't think that's a
way to. We need the fields.
We need the interest in those races.
We do the field size to do. You want to bet on horses?
Little sanity to special going off right here at Churchill
Downs, and the Club 55 horse-dealing.
You I'm not into that advocated actually giving points to less
horses. Yep, but elevating the number of
points in the earlier, races on the card when I was writing for
sure. Vo.
But I think, Rach. That is a lie.
Yeah, it's pretty good one. Yeah, I got it drinks.
Good job out here. I do with my beer.
With there you go. Mike's a home address is not
correct in the directory for the national tour front.
That's the office address. But you know, it's also
incorrect, right? So don't go to Mike's office.
It's not there. Oh man.
All right, good, but I mean Grant takeaway major worthy,
Kentucky Derby winner, I think absolutely yeah you look good.
I mean I can't take anything away from the horse whatsoever I
I am just intrigued if we're going to see this quick Pace to
start the race becoming more of a trend.
I mean, it was, it was blistering both years to neuro.
Yeah. Two years in a row, which we had
not seen that. I mean, as soon as I was this is
this a whole bread ghosts hanging out next to Lockhart
MacLean during the race. Don't think so, not a homo do.
So when we saw the 22 22 3 opening opening fraction, we
looked at that and you're like, man for a classic race for them
to go back to me, that is That's blistering speed and we kind of
talked about it on the show on Friday like 23 and a half is
kind of like the number. That is kind of the cutoff to
me. It's like 23, 30, 23 .6.
Yeah, is the is the is the Park. Yeah.
And so they wrote more than a full second faster than that and
if s and then even that second fraction they get in 23 just
under 23 for. I mean they were flying so is a
forty five point seven, three on that half mile and man I mean
that's just a lot. To ask for horses.
You have never gone that distance before to try to keep
up with that pace and it set up perfectly for a closer maze.
Took advantage of it. I've not seen the overhead
replay the race of you. Yes.
So I'd love to do you make any rectangular moves and it just
opened up for them or what do you know?
He was just the best horse on Saturday.
Okay, great. I mean, I'm not trying to be
flip. I mean, I really, I think he
just is the best horse in that field and that it gives me hope
that he could be really interesting and in nine days,
and that we're going to go watch I mean I think if he wins his
excuse me, if he runs his that race again, it was pregnant.
Yeah. This feels not it's not terrible
but it's not nearly what the field is the modern Preakness
field. Exactly.
Yeah. So I mean I think it's a it's
definitely something where he could go and get it done.
All right. So so you want let's talk real
quick Preakness. Yep.
Who's going to be going from the we know so far from the Derby.
Yeah. So horses that we've seen at
least disarm is on his way which is interesting.
Because you ran three weeks before the Derby.
Now, he's going to run two weeks after the Derby going old
school. That is old school as bleep and
that isn't as muhsin. Yeah.
Right about one another as muhsin, but it's a lot of
drinking, it's a lot. There's a lot of drinking and
then the winner of Oakland's bathhouse is right about one.
He'll be in there and then Derby.
Runner-up to Phil's is also a possible for Larry of Ellie.
Do you think he runs No, I'd I think that horse it could very
well be a problem in the bone and the Belmont.
Yeah, he lived like you want to keep going, right?
So I don't think he does but the the interesting thing is that
there's some Rumblings that Julia shining my try to bring
this field or that a DeRosa wrote an article.
Okay. So you think there's nothing to
it was that needless Misfortune. Yeah, probably was listen.
Shouldn't she just run the black-eyed?
Susan, I'm afraid to. I'm just really happy that after
years and years of awkward interactions between us.
The ball out. Like, I actually converse with
that, DeRosa on, multiple occasions, this weekend, to me.
That's a win. Did you shine his head?
I did not show his head, just shine my head.
I think the awkwardness between us for whatever for whatever
reason. It's basically there because
he's awkward, I think, but I think we made up hatred.
That's why you think that's what it was.
Yeah. It could have been it.
It was what he was working at church.
A lot of care about about that hrn like that's flatter.
Yeah, whatever had it. But yeah, I think that's going
to be the interesting thing to see, you know, we're going to
see blazing sevens, come back, I guess that's a legit person.
First mission one, the Lexington is going to be in this race and
I think I'll favorite for a lot of people.
Okay. Right.
Brad Cox wins Lexington makes that run up the rail against the
baffert and Arabian lion. Right wins one of the Derby
preps. I get it.
It's 20 pointer but wins the Derby prep, right?
And that's what you want from a three-year-old is a quart of
object coming back with National Treasure.
Which I Yeah, you think he's not a distance horse?
Yeah, I don't, I don't think he's a distant Source, I mean,
but we'll see. I think he's, I mean, he's the
one turn milder all day long. Okay.
Yeah, I'm gonna listen, you know, the the horse that won the
tie that SEO is a good magic. Mages, a good magic.
Okay, you know, maybe we'll get a little performance out of
perform the interesting day. 83, the last Deputy testimony last
winter of at SEO and the Preakness it's been 40 years.
Can we get one? On the 40th anniversary.
You know, it's pretty cool because you and I actually even
really just parchment. Even though we before he started
knowing, you know, about Mason jar, we knew a little bit about
lazy 7/7. We had this discussion about how
good of a sire good. Good magic is showing to be
early in his early, his stud career, right?
So it reminds me, actually, the early returns here, remind me of
the first year of the Gun Runner's or we like, oh we knew
he was going to be good, but good.
Gosh, I mean even better than we thought it feels like that a
little bit with good magic. Great Confidence Game for the
Derby. Yep.
Coming back. Our boy.
Kevin thought that he was going to be a big.
Kevin Conroy was going to be a big player in the deer and 10th.
Are you like me that if a horse runs 10th in the derby?
You think of that as like a second or third in like an eight
horse field? Yeah, I think there's no,
there's no shame in running 10th in the dirt.
I agree. Yeah.
I mean yeah there's no shame. It's stunning.
How many great horses did not win the Derby right, right?
Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
So National Treasure, you mentioned blazing.
Sevens is coming in for Chad Brown.
I think that's isil's favorite for this race magic.
Yep and henrique. You have you followed this horse
at all? I'm not he's not on my list.
So okay, so Henry Q is an interesting horse because he is
coming out of as I go to Aquabase Aquabase.com, he's a
blame and a Malibu other side, came out of the Sunland, Park
Derby in, one, the mine that bird Derby.
At Sunland Park. So he's one of these new
Shooters with a lot that we don't know about him.
He switched to the Doug O'Neill bar.
Okay, and my Columbus is on the show, by the way, from blind
squirrel, shout out to him. Thanks for joining the show.
He lost a low expectations, do you remember outside it like
that had the Lowered Expectations at what was that?
Not the best? Was that I think that's like
five or was? It was it was I think it was a
producer Zach. The answer to this.
Go ahead and jump in but like Lowered Expectations.
No, no on a polluted river under a bridge.
Oh great. So good the but Henry Q flying
in for this one. Just a weird shooter and the
Preakness is a weird race man. It just is and so sometimes you
get these kinds of starters me Rombauer, couple years ago,
Wednesday El Camino, Real dirty, the El Camino.
Real Derby winner is going to shoot out to and I'm forgetting
his name right now hang on. By the way, what about, you
know, we did all this following the road to the Preakness and
all that stuff and the tessio winner, the only one there
that's going to be in the out of that group.
Yes. Okay.
Chase the chaos coming out of Golden Gate Fields, will ship
for the Preakness. Okay, I feel great for that
group. Here's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to needlessly this Merced horse.
I had nine days ahead of the dirt of the, the Preakness, just
wins for sure. Yeah, they tried him in Derby
prep down at Santa Anita didn't work, but they should have that
thing. I don't, that's not a, I'm not
mad at them. It's not going to work out,
okay? It's okay.
And the horse isn't gonna hit the board, and that's okay.
But to get to run your horse in a classic races.
Unbelievable. And so, I feel great for them.
I said the same exact thing about rich Strike last year, so
they go the last horse to win the Preakness in run.
In the Kentucky Derby was in 2019.
War of will. Ya and justify one the year
before that. Yep.
Before that though is cloud computing, you did not race in
the derby. So we've had an early voting
Rombauer, Swiss skydiver, no Derby horses.
Have one in quite a while. Jump on the show for five
seconds. Were you there for the war of
will Preakness with me in 2019? Or were you not at that one?
I wasn't that one hole. No.
No. It wasn't that 2019.
Okay. All right.
Sorry. You are Justified with me, for
sure. Yes.
Yeah. In the fog, that was an all-time
trip. All right.
You can go away. All right.
So the the justify if you, if people don't remember it, go
back and watch how foggy it was man.
The justify pretty big. I'm good.
Yeah, it was a great. You couldn't.
I mean there's no reason watch TV.
You couldn't see anything well and calmest, go back and listen
to The Columns call and the day of rabbinic all, is it like Try
to fill time because I can't see them.
They can't see anything. They're like, I guess they ran
that in 48 and shades. Like they have no ideas.
It's just all Alzheimer, but literally we I was with a group
of friends, I done the show and we're just past the finish line
by about 100 seats. And we can't see anything.
Can't see, anything, can't see anything and then a group of
five horses, just explodes out of a cloud.
Kind of cool just to find the front and everyone's catching
up. I mean everyone's catching up
and he wins by like a neck and any time someone tells me he's
not a worthy. Triple Crown winner.
I say that's because you weren't at Pimlico.
Yeah, 2018 because that was an unbelievably be here.
Dewayne Lucas. Yeah, it was just, it was a
Lucas. What was the horse in a bottle?
Yeah. Oh, Lucas talk so much bleep to.
It was such a great race. I don't, I don't know that under
better conditions that we don't get the same thing, but Lucas
was so confident. I really appreciated that
actually, the other thing is I was there for the Pharaoh
Preakness and it down poured for like five minutes before the
race and they weighed the jockey afterward.
He weighed 20 pounds over crazy and they comes back in the
Belmont. Like no big deal because he's
pharaoh. I'll tell you that's going back
to that Derby. You know, since we brought me
when Lucas one of the coolest things that Derby week for me
was being nice and exceed, oh, sure.
It was freaking awesome. He was great, he was great.
So, all right, let's a bunch of great guests last week too.
And thanks to all of them because, I mean, it was just a
tremendous for. I mean, like, when the, when the
one of the lead writer for Sports Illustrated like, yeah,
I'm just trying for the beginning.
Yeah, of course. No problem.
No problem. Let's go.
Yeah, I think we're not Facebook friends.
Actually. Really, huh?
So there you go. We're going to move on to the
handicapping session of the show.
Me and Pat, 40 hanging on Facebook.
All right, so by the way, I have a sequence in the green sheet on
Saturday, it is at Churchill Downs.
We are now going to talk about Belmont on the other hand,
retracing.com, five bucks, or Saturday, Manowar Stakes.
We're going to start right now 600,000 our race.
They give mrs. Belmont the inner Turf course
Mound. 3/8 a one of those route route route Turf course races
for four year olds and up we go. It's um really.
You know we got we're going to heavy favor here with a
two-horse, a great Point. Yep.
But I think a very worthy Contender and red and white as
well. Sure.
Who do you do, where did you settle it on this one blue?
So the horse that's going to get overlooked here is verstappen
who just won the Elkhorn at Keeneland going to mile and a
half and that horse. It needs to be remembered.
If they ran the that race. At this distance, he would have
won and then they ran it in a mile-and-a-half anyone.
Anyway, okay, so he won the race twice.
If we run it at the different distances as far as I'm The
running him at Turf way before that and he was fine on the
synthetic but he got to the Keeneland grass and he was
great, he's never run a Belmont but this is a horse that's 1/3
of his last eight races and we're talking about,
everything's in the kind of company that you want to see
steps integrated company for the first time last time out and he
wins that race. I love the fact that he did that
you keep Declan Cannon. Here, what's different here is
deck eidos, the course a little bit of Belmont hasn't been up
there this year but he does actually know it.
He's hitting it. A sneaky 12% once in a while you
see a jockey percentage and you think, oh, Tom Percent.
That's what a lot of crappy horses and a lot of crappy races
to be very honest about Declan. He usually doesn't get a horse
of this quality. The for verstappen I think has a
shot here but you're right. The horse that I love in this
race is Red Knight. The one, he's three seconds in
five finishes at the distance but he picks up irad here, man.
Last time they were together, they won.
Yes, it was at a mile and a half.
I get it but I think that Iran is going to know the course.
He's going to know what to make the move.
Right night is totally capable. How awesome we talk about fall
in love with the Phillies Man, the long-distance geldings.
Yeah can be that for us to. I've got to see Red Knight and
so many great race has really made my summer last year in the
turf cup at Kentucky Downs in September so it's really fun,
watching him race. So look for him tomorrow.
Excuse me on Saturday, as well. I don't think you can leave more
important point out of your tickets.
I think he's absolutely got a shot here.
Read really well on the Arabian, Peninsula.
And what I love about this horse breaks, his Maiden going, I got
to get this right, going, a straight line run.
Then goes left handed and winds. And then later goes, right
handed in wins. And now he's coming over here to
run left-handed. That's just a talented horse.
That's all that is you get Frankie to Tori here.
You get Charlie Appleby Charlie Appleby his last nine Runners.
Four of them have one on their first try in North America.
Obviously, one of my favorite stories from Derby.
By the way, Louis, it was, you know, we're, we're, our media
boxes is right next to the normal commoners, who get to sit
next to us and lots of times, there's out-of-towners it seems
like More out-of-towners at Derby.
Now, our media desk is literally one bar away from a box from a
box. That's right.
So, I had this, you know, group of Fairly attractive, you know,
mid-shift your women hitting on me the whole time.
And then I notice that I don't know, get out of the way for
you. Yeah.
I mean it's called being a friend.
You could have been a wingman, you know.
But you know, it's all right. Yeah.
I'm not that kind of good and then over but then one of the
guys on Saturday says hey why is their Turf racing was there dirt
racing and luckily I knew the answer and a damn fine question.
By the way, it is greats, like why is their Turf?
And I said, well, they said Chicago, where they're from?
They the Chicago people was the Elvis and all those guys.
Okay, yeah I can't remember where those guys were from
honestly. But you know I said well
basically when you know it was it's it's Turf racing over in
England and they they turn right?
Correct. And so what gives if you want?
Yeah, well, they did over here is they said hey Fu England.
We're going to put you on dirt and turn left and that's the
true story. That's why there's dirt racing
and then they added Turf racing a little bit later.
So here in America. So that's that's the story, all
right. So anything else to say about
the man-of-war Stakes? Just I mean, just a fun.
It's interesting because this is only two weeks after we had, you
know the the wood for the old Forester Turf here, right?
So we still we still see a really good group of turf horses
here, going to turns. And so I it gives me a little
hope that we're going to have a bunch of Great to turn Turf
horses, Turf races, excuse me. This summer Manowar, of course
one in 1921 the Preakness and the Belmont but could not win
the Kentucky Derby. So two legs of the Triple Crown
but could not win it when you did not did not did not win it
so I guess he was capable. I mean man towards a pretty good
look pretty good horse you know he has legs does he does he's
alright yeah alright we're going to move on to the great three
Peter Pan Am on 8th on the dirt for three-year-olds Louis.
He was you're picking so we have a potential new shooter so we
did the road to the Preakness shows.
We talked about the tessio the Peter Pan.
Is the tessio of the New York circuit.
Okay? Okay, so this is the hats.
According to my Columbus, that made you attracted to the women.
Is that current could have been. If I will say, Bishops, Bay is
in this race. The nine and this is a brad Cox
entry who's Running a Fairgrounds and you mentioned
something earlier in the show Mike which is that we need to
change our mindset about where horses come from that could be
great. Yep.
Because we are in a an interesting spot in horse racing
right now. We are in contraction so we're
going to have fewer tracks. We're going to have fewer, Mega
trainers. We have more bears stadiums.
But we are going to see that those people have to spread
their horses around so that they can win for their ownership.
Okay. So you mentioned horseshoe
Indianapolis that's a spot for Brad Cox it was it there right?
He uses allspark yeah uses Turfway uses fairgrounds right.
He's all over the place because he has to be his barn.
So big, right? So what we're seeing is the
assistant trainer is the new small trainer.
And so in this case Bishops Bay coming out of Uncle and I'll
come O Pioneer, the nylon, the bottom ninety seven speed figure
breaking his heavy favorite in this race at 4:52 never run.
Without Lasix. Yeah, we're going to one turn
Mile and an eighth because you can do that at Belmont.
Do you know why you can do that at Velma?
Because the track is ginormous because a mile and an eighth or
mile and a half is the normal track.
So you have to have all the other options available right
there. Huh.
I'll have to come out of the shoot there.
He's interesting, and I think he's probably the play.
I think, if you want to make money, you have to try to beat
that horse. Okay.
They got your, your boy henrique Ulysses entry in this race.
You think he's gonna scratch? No, I think he's gonna run.
So no to the prettiest tree. I think he's no to the
Preakness. I think he's going to run about,
okay? And so this is where I think
Doug O'Neill, Lance. I think he's going to be there.
Frank into Tory's already lined up to drive to ride him.
I think that's where they're going to go.
So classic catch. Ran in the five.
Horse here, gets I read for the second time.
What did they do last time they were together?
Well, they won a race to Churchill.
There's a pretty big Stakes race Patricia.
Yeah. They won at Gulfstream Park in
an optional clever. Oh, you're talking about this
horse? Okay, yeah.
Not just I read with trash like they're together all time.
Running second in the yeah. No, not that.
So, get him back. What's interesting about this is
as run in that in the wood Memorial.
I was really hoping one of the horses and so I was hoping we
would get one of the top four finishers in the wood here, just
a horse that was used to a deeper track on Long Island.
We're talking to get that, unfortunately, but I do think
you get classic catch here. I'm gonna put him on top of the
five 9:00 to 2:00 in the morning line, pleasure.
And I read, I don't think it's an accident that they're here
with this horse classic Empire. On top Malibu, moon on the
bottom 143 this year with a third place.
Finish best speed figure was in the would look at his speed
figures. Last three times out 78, 80 to
85 in a row isn't improving horse.
Already used to being on the deeper track on Long Island
which we're going to find a Belmont.
I think that he's the horse. I'm definitely going to play on
top here, top pleasure. By the way, over seven to start
the Belmont meet before today. Oh yeah.
Or second place finishes just a bit of bad luck, but I read 348
to start the meet at 38%. So I'm not worried about that.
There are some other horses here that I think are interesting.
I'm fascinated that Brad Cox is horse slip.
Mahoney is for 21, and you're getting 922 on classic catch who
he finished behind in the wood Memorial.
Does pick up Joel Rosario. I understand that.
But I would much rather have the five here in classic catch.
So if you wanted to go really short here, I would go 59, I am
fascinated by Henry q and entering that horse here.
Because apparently what I think the dog.
Oh Neal thinks is if he doesn't have to be on the lead which he
has been in previous races or maybe he inherits the lead and
he just does the damn thing. He can be a long distance horse
as well. That's a blame for the Malibu on
the bottom as well. So maybe that's a three-year-old
angle that he's looking for, but I would go five and nine in this
race. All right, we're going to move
on to the Run happy and just because everything's named after
unhappy, right? So, this is actually named
after. This is actually named after
unhappy steaks, I don't think they actually They should
probably have to sponsor this though, right?
They should but run happiest. Don't there's anybody run.
Happy. This is the actual like
run-happy that's actually just run happy.
It's just given to him which is good.
So this is a sorry I lost my train of thought.
Oh you're funny, great, 364 long Sprint on the dirt four year
olds and up hundred seventy five thousand dollar purse and
actually this is the legit pretty decent field for grows
great three for sure. Yeah yes totally like here.
Alright so I'm going to draw A line through a race.
All right, and give you candy man rocket.
The for at 1:53 hated Oak Lawn and I'm not going to hold it
against the horse. Okay has run a Belmont before
ran a second in the Gold Fever which is a list of takes your
behind Barren by a nose. And I mean went back and watch
that Iran's on Baron the to, they're going to take a ton of
money because of that. And and so to be there, they're
very equal horses here. I think the Candy Man rocket
under Junior Alvarado, everyone on the show, whoever listens
knows that I loved you. Alvarado.
And so, I'm gonna use the 4 on top here, 722 on the morning
line. I do think you have to use Baron
here. I think that you could draw a
line through his last race. A twisted, right is in here, the
three at 1:51 and you're getting a lesser known writer and
Hernandez who ran well at parks. We see more and more of this mic
where we see this movement, between Pennsylvania, and
Maryland, and Pennsylvania and New York and we see those
runners run well. Yep.
Right. It was something we talked about
in the previous shows. And so Twisted ride, although
running and Stakes. A company has one now, four in a
row. And before that lost to repo,
rocks by a neck at parks it six-and-a-half, furlongs, we're
going six furlongs here which is frankly, just Sprint to the turn
turn and then Sprint to the Finish Line at Belmont.
And so kind of an interesting thing here, man, I'm not on
drafted here. For some reason.
Last win was at Aqueduct over six furlongs in December.
I think that horse is not, I don't know.
There's something about it. I do like the move to Jose
Ortiz, here for the dog and barn, but I I don't know.
I'm off of drafted. So that's needless.
Was parchment. The one will definitely win
their unhappy on Saturday. I mean, if a merchant horse, the
horse is definitely, especially greatest my gosh.
But no, I'm with you, man, this is a very legitimate grade 3.
They've got three steaks on Saturday, it's nine hundred
seventy five thousand dollars of Belmont.
They're doing, they're doing it up there.
I love it. Alright, so there you go.
That's our show again. Next week we will be at Pimlico.
You can catch us talk about that before.
Okay, before we hang up because you've never been, I've never
been to the Preakness, been to Baltimore, not speaking.
Yeah, I've been to tracks and shitty parts of towns.
Before I've been highly by the way, that should be a rule.
Once we go non non. What's up with your audience?
Laughing? Okay, the first cursing you
should have to drink. Okay.
All right, that's fair drink juice.
What do you mean expectations for Preakness since I've kind
of? So if everyone wants to know, I
always describe the Derby's the Derby.
Yeah. And then how do I describe the
Preakness as the county fair of the Triple Crown?
Sure. Yeah.
Are you ready for a County Fair? Sure.
I mean, I listened, I expect the show up in there to be like some
Mega In the infield with a whole bunch of just drunk college
kids, listen to live music in between races.
I'm guessing you can hear the loud music in this thing all the
time. Yeah.
Which I'm on favor of I love the lab music instead of like the
same DJ track. We were here at Churchill Downs
the whole time was like, you know, I love the fact that they
got the concerts in the concerts, take a little break,
probably during the horses racist and then they keep going.
So do you know who I'd performing a Preakness?
I do not. Who's anybody good?
Bruno, Mars Runo, Mars. Good name.
That's a pretty. Oh, you know, I'm actually
excited about. Okay?
Sophie Tucker. There you go.
You know who's Sophie? Tucker is, I don't talk to me.
Sophie, Tucker has done a couple Apple commercials, like they did
the best friend. So, she's kind of a, it's a guy
and a girl, and they're kind of techno.
Oh good. Yeah, but they're like that.
Yeah. Who else is on that list people?
Like, I really didn't know. Okay, well, I mean, I'll pull
back. All right.
Pull back up real quick because that listen, I'm I think I'm
going to, that's probably. Okay.
Mars is a get man. Yeah, Bruno Mars is a get.
He's a big name. Yeah.
How much what do we got to do to get a mug?
You know do we just head to toe? Jump you guys like go get me a
mug Chompy. Go give him a hug.
I mean he's got that kind of pull their right.
I get it. The other part of this by the
way, if you're going to be a Preakness, we're going to be at
Peter's poorhouse both Friday and Saturday.
Well yeah, I'll be there on Sat on Friday.
Mike won't be, he'll be sleeping.
I don't know about that. We'll see.
Maybe There's a little walking mall right next to where we
stay, okay? That has a bar, a breakfast
place a steakhouse. And then other places that I
haven't gone to, I just going to go to Baltimore.
Get crabs will do that. Okay.
Yeah. Not the sexual transmission.
So it's going to ask her what her name is but yeah.
I feel like you're locked out of heaven.
No, I'm not at like the dad joke, I'm trying to, I guess he
will drink here. I get you.
I get it. Back me up here.
All right, but as far as everything else like I'm that
was a horrible joke. Thank you Zach.
Yeah. You know I will say this.
It is no, it's double. He doubled down and adjunct that
needless besmirch but that's right.
Lou and I have very different senses of humor.
I can tell you that right now. So okay.
So but the other is there any, do you have any expectation at
all? I'm kind of interested in this
actually because I've never traveled with, you know, okay,
that we not Not really, I mean, I've been to horse races in
other parts of the country and different tracks.
And well, you've been a beautiful places.
I've been this crappy places to like I said, like highly.
It was highly as gorgeous and Islam, but it's in a crappy PC
part of him. But listen, I've been a patch.
I've been Ellis. Okay, then turn off, you know,
I've been there, I've been a teacher feedback was really
terrific. Now, let's carefully carefully
I'm with you so that like, you know, I don't have, you know,
that horse racing runs again, but like, like college ever been
to a race track. That has 120,000 people at it
and the bathrooms all don't work.
Yeah, well down 120,000 people but highly of the bathrooms
didn't work so 100% I got that doesn't surprise me at all.
That's one of the nice things about having a penis is that can
be wherever I want you to. Someone may have figured a
parking lot, over Derby weekend. That's all I'm the only thing I
did. The only thing I will give
expectation to is because we have access to the Preakness
roof to Pimlico roof, okay? You will get to chat with The
Baltimore City snipers from the police department, okay?
Are they, the police department? The FBI police department, okay?
And they use the binoculars up there to scout the talent.
Yeah, they probably have a list. I'm sure I just it's it is the
easiest Triple Crown race to try to cover.
It's not even. Close is the best good.
All right, I got no, I know you love it so because also I think
you'll be stunned at how many people you know, just walking
around to like what like Tracing media and stuff.
Yeah, a little-little glitterati.
Most of them know who I am but I don't know who the hell they
are. So got it.
That's good for your business that you're in the people
business. It's right.
Yeah, it'll be great. I think that's actually was
really fun for us. The first time we went to the
theater be. Yeah.
Right. You know, we got to kind of be
with a lot of those people. Those people in a way getting
those people do. I mean by the most people, you
know, I mean nerds, that's what I mean.
No nerds like us. I got to be with a lot of those
people in a way that we just got to hang out and got to know each
other a little bit better and you know it was it was good.
So I'll just say I know a DeRosa and I'll be fine.
That's the key to everything. That's right.
It is out here. All right, we're gonna we're
gonna pay the tab. We're gonna get out of here.
We'll see you from Baltimore next week.
Take care please.
