All right, everybody settled for The Bard.
It's time for this week's edition.
Horse racing happy. Our lawyer ball hanging out with
producers Zach for the time being the horse himself, the
Hall of Famer, the man who has more points scored and more
rebounds in Kentucky. History than any other player
but cares way more about horses. Now his name, he'll join us at
8:15. So about 15 minutes but we'll
get going on the episode here. Where were you listening?
I always mean it. When I say A thanks for thanks
for hanging out with us tonight. It is January. 12th, we are
going to talk Busan de as we get into our first 20-point prep
outside of the Breeders Cup for the Oaks.
This is when we start looking, especially going to turns at
Aqueduct. I love to start looking at the
Phillies as they get into this part.
Season and I kind of want to update those.
Those Derby ranks, those those those Oaks rankings because I
know I'm a little bit different than other people, especially
any oxide. But I do think that there are
some horses on the male side that might be able to translate
that form from the two-year-old year, to the three-year-old
year, usually pretty difficult for the forces, especially on
the male side to do that. And so, we'll talk about that.
Like I mentioned we will have that we will have to do Saudis
takes this weekend. And, of course, that's an
aqueduct. It's very easy to Poopoo
Aqueduct. But we forget how much of the
weight of the naira calendar Aqueduct carries?
This is absolutely part of it. And so, you know, you get into
this time of year and they're just running and running and
running it at an aqueduct. Do you know the Queens
neighborhood in which Aqueduct is situated.
One producers action. It's probably the coolest name
for a neighborhood for horse racing that we have I I can I
could tell you the directions on how to drive there.
I just hate. I know in New York City where
Aqueduct is, but I could not bring the Queens neighborhood.
It is in his Ozone Park, so that's what we're looking for.
So, yeah, this is a, this is an interesting race because we have
gotten some really good horses out of this race.
We've gotten last year's winner was magic circle.
She hasn't done too much since then.
The grass is blue 2021 is come back when a couple stakes races
Harvey's little oil I won this race in 2020.
Always shopping in 2019. So there's been some recent
winners who have actually gone on to very good three-year-old
campaigns as well. I don't know who the most famous
winter would be, maybe has to kill a 93 Wayward last in 1981
and so she I know we're last trade by cash as - and was went
on to win, multiple grade ones, dreamy me, the 89 winner went on
to become a great one winner, multiple graded Stakes Winner
and as to kill, like I mentioned in 1993 that was back when It's
mental still riding the diver circuit.
So, lots of I mean, seriously, good.
Oh, you know princess of Sylmar won this race in 2013.
I'm leaving her out and I shouldn't do that.
She became multiple grade one winner as well.
So we've seen some nice, some nice photos come out of this
race. Actually, a little disappointed
in the field, this year, only five forces there are, there is
a maid in this race as well. An affirmative lady.
I think he's got a real shot at actually.
It's so that's kind of interesting grandma grandma
ocean, making sure that she's involved for that one.
She has gone to two turns, Lost by a neck last time out to Julia
shining who we now know to be a very, very good Oaks Contender
frankly. And so you know, once Julie
shining already won one of our 10 point races on the way to on
the Kentucky Oaks Trail, I should say and so for her to be
back in this field, it but it must find just got home from
from basketball, practice. Yeah.
Makes me think that with the experience over the track gets
many Franklin, the irons which I really like and it should be a
part of it. Be interesting to see a maiden
winner in the Posada but frankly she's already run against a
very, very good company. And look, we're gonna get rain.
Today we had rain today we're going to rain tomorrow and
queens track, probably gonna dry out a little bit on Saturday,
but we still might have good muddy conditions, I don't know
somewhere in there so she went over that sloppy course last
time so she's already got that experience something to watch
for sure. A cult of course in the space as
well, broker made in over a good cause Aqueduct in a mile, that's
one term. We are going a little bit
further here in Milan and 8th which is the start start to
finish on the starting line and the Finish Line at Aqueduct to
have a mile and an eighth Dark Horse in Ozone Park and still be
interesting to see where we land there and as Dan his opinion on,
that race as well. But I am going to go with the
main I think that she gets it done, I think that affirmative
lady steps up for Grand motion here.
Maybe Franco, it does get the win here, brakes are made and I
think she's ready to do it and I think that she's I don't want a
horse for course, but she seems to be really comfortable at
aqueduct. To be really cold.
So that'll be interesting for weather but like I said that she
wanted December over sloppy, go in a kind of a crappy day in the
early part of December. Gives me a thought that they
think she's really ready to go with this one.
I also do like that that routing experience that she has.
If you're looking for more of an off, the board kind of horse,
Aniston is in this race broker Maiden but big big margin.
Last time out and at Aqueduct late, November a bit of time off
for Todd pleasure. G Jose, Luis condo for this
Mount, the to them limited typifies.
The 29% a top, Knocking, 33% of third of the race, is over all
together. Todd Lee, starting to lean on
him, a little bit more in the winter months.
So I would look at those two. I know that there's going to be
a bunch of money that comes in on gambling girl, which is the
Carmouche Pletcher combination. No reason not to.
Look at that horse as well. But look, it's only a 5-horse
field. Who knows what the conditions we
might get down to something like a like a four-horse field here.
So you're gonna have to be really selective if you're going
to, if you're going to bet this race again, this is the last leg
of that grand slam bet that we talked about and I were before
At, I really like you try to finish pick one of the top three
horses in the previous three races.
So essentially it's a show show show and then you have to have
the winner in the last race and that would be the Busan to this
weekend. And so kind of a cool
opportunity there, unfortunately, because the five
horse, I don't think it's gonna pay very much, so I'll be
staying away from the Grand Slam this weekend.
I was hoping for a bigger field, because I was going to do some
Grand Slam talk for the handicapped exception.
But instead we're gonna stay here and get talky-talk late.
Pick for at Turfway, which will have, I think?
If not the biggest favorite of the weekend, one of the biggest
in the likely exchange will talk about her when they enjoyed the
show later. Zach, if you would go ahead and
pull up these replays from last week, we got our first winner in
the drill into Drome. Of course, the second oldest
Stakes race in the United States.
And this was Luca night left to go.
They are head and head here. Arctic arrogance is ready to
challenge a very game lugan night, down towards the inside,
trying to rally on his General banker.
And from the back, its neural network, who still has five
lengths to make up a final Furlong and they are
shoulder-to-shoulder here in the Jerome.
Arctic arrogance did not run by Logan night who's very game to
the inside for a 16th ago. Look at night is still there.
Arctic arrogance, couldn't pass Logan night game and Winds of
the Jerome. It's lugan night Right.
Over Arctic arrogance, then General Baker and neural network
in woman. So, an interesting thing here,
this is the one mile over one turn at Aqueduct.
Of course, I don't hate that by the way, for a prep.
What's typical interesting to being his last week, they do
Derby prep, it's give me someone to remind, then they come back
for it, okay, prep, and they go to turns with the latest right
away, but we claim so, little more expected, apparently of the
women in New York than they are of the men.
And so it's, it was interesting. The only thing I'll say for in
Laguna nights Here in winning the race is, got out there and
they got challenged and found an extra kick in the stretch.
You will I like it when younger horses?
Have that kind of mentality? No, you're not.
Passing me. I'm going to be the best in the
stretch and that's what we got. Really good night this past
week. So literally watching that
replay today. I was thinking, how does it feel
to be the six horse? We're like, you give it your all
and the whole time your neck away and he's watching.
Pleasure trip for training, Mike McCarthy.
You too. So, you know, not not going to
be not hurt for connections there.
So I think that, you know, that's the kind of horse that
will see, probably stay in New York, right?
Go to the Gotham and then eventually go to the wood.
And so, frankly, if the horse likes likes Aqueduct unless
Belmont, I don't think there's a reason not to do that.
Try to qualify for the Derby. That way, if you can get into
the Derby around the Derby, see what happens.
And then come back running back in the Belmont.
I think he's that kind of horse, so Goodwin Liu can night.
Not would not be in my top five. Ten kind of verses for the Derby
right now, just because I'm a little I don't know how good
that field was to me, it wasn't great, but like I said, the
point of the race is right now is just to win them and get the
points and get yourself a spot at the table for the Derby.
Let's go ahead and look out west in the Sham.
I mean, Look, Backwards sweeps. The top three, which means that
there were no points for the top three finishers in the Sham, for
the Kentucky Derby Trail but reincarnate, his longest shot on
the board, pulls it off in the Sham and this is what it looked
like. Coming down the stretch, it's an
Indian National Treasure angles to the outside as they come to
the 16th pole, Newgate on the Outside and are resilient
reincarnate trying to fend. Them off reincarnate, new gate
National Treasure reincarnate and one Hernandez to take the
Sham. So a couple of things come up
for me here. You know that that race doesn't
happen. If baffert doesn't enter all the
horses together at the yeah. She exact right?
Number one, number two, I think we're past the point with Juan
Hernandez and Southern California that he's not going
to get bumped for a derby Mount. If his horse, if that if he
makes it so free card, it makes it down the Derby Trail.
I think Juan Hernandez is going to be your jockey and I and I
and I welcome that because I think he's terrific and I think
he's gotten to the level where he deserves the Derby Mount, if
he's the one who Pilots a horse through that West Coast path, to
the derby, we have to ask the question because we asked it
every year. Now, there are four last year
this year, who's trained in this horse and three months.
Yeah, who's trying to a sports on a month-and-a-half?
Excuse me, I mean, even that that's do.
So, do we do we go down the chimney?
I tear out again, are we going to, you know, stay out west with
it, with the trainer is the ownership group going to look
somewhere else? I mean, this is an ownership
group that is wildly wildly loyal to Bob baffert.
I don't anticipate them doing something outside of what
baffert advises. Because they see this Derby and
this year at Churchill as the last of the of the two-year ban
and they'll get back to whatever they were doing beforehand.
No sense from baffert that he's hanging it up or going to go do
something else anytime soon. So I think they see I think they
see these as a couple of Road bumps.
It will be more interesting to me this year to see how many
horses get entered out of the baffert barn in Maryland at the
Preakness because I do think we'll see a bit of that.
By the way Zach started having those preliminary conversations
about the Preakness buddy. Oh man we're going to get it's
the best it's the best trip. I'll just come pick you up.
The RV. We'll drive out there together
Nick's room for an RV there. Yeah, yeah.
You know, the the hey, by the way, by the way, if you told me
that was the same race. I believe you just happen to be
unheard of course of the picture Ricardo just held off held off
the other two that picture. So yeah, I mean not only is bad
for not bowing out but he's Bowing in like you're seeing
more and more of his horses as what he does.
Yeah. Two races.
Like, he's pumping them out like nobody's business.
Yeah. So it'll be again.
Interesting to see where the, or they land in which Barnes and
all those sorts of things, I don't know.
You know, I think you're gonna see more you act in Runners with
with sort of Bedford instructions and we'll see how
they run once they get here to to the Kentucky Derby.
I think there's a chance that if they get a better starting to
get a better path and a better race, you might have seen the
Kentucky Derby winner in that race.
In those three what are those three horses?
And so you know it's been a little bit since you know we've
had that was authentic the last one must be 2020 so it has been
too long but you know, Santa Anita Derby winner coming over.
Winning the Kentucky Derby has been one of the best predictors
of success in the in the Triple Crown Series is that sanity to
route and so hopefully those horses are able to transition
Barnes and do just as well in the new barn as they have been
doing in The baffert part, I was more impressed with reincarnate
that I was with Lou good night but of course he doesn't have
any points unfortunately on the Kentucky Derby Trail.
So I can't really put them in a rankings anywhere because I
don't know where he's going or what is Route is going to look
like and which Barn he's going to be in.
And so hopefully we will see those horses back at it.
Just kind of think about this since before.
The Senate need a derby. Hang on.
I'm better than this. I promise.
All right. Well, you look that up.
I mean, yes, the man, the myth, the legend, the old man on the
back porch and he's probably band, and the excuse me, the oh
my gosh, why am I losing my place here?
The Sham out saying. I need a last weekend.
Of course, baffert goes, 1, 2 3, is his longest shot in the
field. Reincarnate gets the Victory out
there. I was more impressed with him
that I was with Luke and night New York.
What did you think of those two races?
Yeah, you know, as Luca night was my pick and you asked me on
our show and that was or I couldn't think of his name.
But that's who I liked. I think he was 41 on the morning
line, you know, reading the recap of that race Lily.
And I'm glad I'm not there because I hate cigar smoke.
But I'm getting these out of the way before you come back to
town, son, or yeah. But it doesn't sound like
they're too excited about the Derby.
I, they don't much think this horse wants to get a mile and a
quarter, so if the owners don't think he's a Derby horse, I
don't know why we should that's fair enough.
Did you, did you? Like, I told fact that I
thought, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the Derby.
Winner is one of those top three finishers in the Sham.
What's Say you of that, well, they'd have to go someplace else
with it would have. Preferred is still not eligible
to run in the derby. I I don't know, I don't know.
I was I wasn't terribly impressed with that race.
You know the big favorite runs. Third.
I don't even know. Louis if those are the three
best, three-year-olds that baffert has in his barn right
now and forever, Brad Cox has loaded.
You know, you Todd's going to have the two-year-old Champion,
I would be surprised if one of those three horses wins, the
Kentucky Derby. It's Forte on top for you right
now. Yeah, until somebody knocks him
off. Yeah, Brad Cox seems to be
loaded. He's running a Saturday, he's
running a horse in the by Justified that broke ass Maiden.
The Saratoga in an allowance race and it looks like he's got
six or eight horses on the Derby Trail.
I'm kind of interested in logins.
I think, if I make a Derby Derby BET right now, it logins would
be my horse because he ran in just a second start of his life,
you know, he ran for taped to a neck and so if you forced me to
make a derby a future book, Derby bet I'd be on logins,
would you have Cave Rock as Baffert right now.
No my top my top baffert would be the horse you and I saw
breaking. Ow.
Yeah. Team one Arabian.
Lion. Yeah, I would say that.
I mean that was kind of impressed.
Yeah, that screams bad for to write to win that race as
detailed and then come back and be better as three.
Yeah you're right. I would put that horse at the
top because not only did he win And I think Louis by seven or
eight lengths, but it was another seven or eight lengths
by 4. So I think right now, I'd say
that's baffert stop three-year-old.
Jeju Bob effort, when he walked onto the track.
No, do you have a Budweiser? I don't I'm doing a dry, I'm
doing a drop January. So did you ever get out of
paying for Dana's? Smells like it did.
Yes. Okay.
Are there because all right, good enough.
Oh, man. So on the Oakside because we do
have the Busan to this weekend and I was disappointed in the
number of horses here, but I do think there's a really
interesting clearly here. She's coming in as a maiden in
the ground motion Barn. I think affirmative lady,
because of that wet experience. We're going to rain tomorrow.
In Ozone, Park is an interesting entry here.
She's also gone that Mile and an eighth that Aqueduct gets maybe
Franco here in the iron. So I love it aqueduct.
I think he's unbelievable. Did you, did you land on anyone
in the pousada? Do you have any jokes sort of
rankings feelings? I was between the two and an
affirmative lady though. They paid a lot of money for
that Curlin. Philly.
On the bottom but she broke her maiden Louis running a mile and
an eighth in a minute 58 and one, you know, you might be able
to run a mile 51. So, I'm throwing her out, I
don't know. Do you think, do you think that
the Motions freely one? I mean, she's got a huge wet
number. Yeah.
Do you think she won cuz she wanted the two terms or do you
think she won? Because it was a sloppy
racetrack. That's a good question, but you
did run in that demo so we get to the the horses back from that
gamble girl. The one of course as well.
For pleasure and Kendrick. Carmouche I think when you're a
daughter of arrogate you do want the two turns.
And I don't know that the wet number bothers me because like I
said, I think we're going to have some moisture in that track
on Saturday. The interesting thing will be
Dan race time, it might be 35 degrees, right?
So it'll be interesting to see, which of these Phillies doesn't
hate the cold because it'll be cold, but you look, if you look
at a cult Chad, Brown has done this in the past.
He's left some good horses in New York.
Over the winter. I think the horse that won the
Preakness this past year. He's running him.
Yeah he stayed in New York all winter so they paid six hundred
twenty-five thousand for this Filly into Mischief.
I don't know I if you force me to pick one I think I'd take a
cult. Okay so a cult is in the two
spot for Dan Issel there, and then I'm going to be on
affirmative lady coming out of that demoiselle against Bye.
Julia shining Julie shining of course does have those ten
points from the demoiselle to go with it.
I was laughing. Dan before you came on, they ran
the Jerome last week. It was a mile over one turn at
Aqueduct, and they are going to run the demoiselle and the Busan
do for the girls. And both of those will be over
to turns. So we expect more out of the
women in New York that we do the math.
There were girls About it. Is they run the a quarter of a
mile over one third. So they do all this prep work
over two thirds and then they're big.
They're big Showcase in the spring for the it for the
ladies, not to be fair. By the time they get to the too
late summer. They're running the damn
Alabama, 10 for a walk straight, so it's a there that's, that's a
serious race. Alright.
So there you go. There's the Busan that ends the
the excuse me, the Grand, Slam bat that we've gone over on this
show. Before you got it's essentially
a show Bent for the first three legs.
You have to pick the winner of the poisson DU, it's a dollar
minimum, it's a fun bet. It's a way to hit the BET, eight
nine, ten different ways, that kind of thing to try to hit as
many times as possible. My sense though because of that
five horse filled with Busan to knock it a plate.
Not going to pay much this week. So I will be saying way
personally, but good luck. If you're playing that one, I
brought down on because he loves to handicap and we are going to
go look at the late pick for and turf Way park.
Cool thing. If people don't know, the take
out radon pick fives at turquoise 14%, the takeout on
pick force is only 15% so you can actually get a pretty fair
shake at Turfway Park. This is the lowest Exclaiming
price can and I have ever handicap together.
It is 8,000 dollars for a 25 thousand dollar person race five
here adds roughly a mile on that synthetic going the two turns,
it is a one-mile course and so we start at the start line and
we finished at the same line. Dan did you have a strong
opinion on this race? This was the leg in this
sequence where I felt the I felt most like spreading that there's
no question and that's it. That's exactly what I did it
because, you know, 8,000 The cheaper the horse, I'd find
Louis the harder it is to handicap probably because they
can they can run a great race and come back and throw in a
clunker. Totally true as because I'm so
short the rest of the field, the rest of the pick for.
I used Five Horses here. Okay, great.
Oh no, sigh. You six sources here, I use the
to the three and I and I, I don't know.
I-i'm, I must not know what I'm doing because I use six horses
and didn't use the five horses. 321 on the morning line, love
use the 2, the 3, the seven, the nine ten, eleven to start pick
for. I like I like to go heavy on the
front end anyway, even if I don't care.
So, I want to be alive before the before the first race in.
So that is terrible advice from Uncle Dan, but we will accept it
here. Happy hour, don't play those.
Don't play those ticket. You single?
Where you got a single people, you know, it's interesting saw
the sing-songbird is in the campus.
Fletcher, Barney hasn't run anyone in 2023 at Turfway but
has had since was successful for on the synthetic at 15%.
So here's an interesting trainer.
A lot of horses in this kind of race, this is where Dan is,
right? You can get that 12:48, kind of
number to start off your sequence here and so I also
landed on included the, the foreign - well I do have the 5
just because the horse did run a big number last time out at
Woodbine over a very similar surface tan, but I have her
think it's her. Yeah, her to show mayor in the
third spot. I would tend 9 up top 10.
I do think safe travels is probably your most likely winner
won at the 15 level gets claim, the running her back at the 8th
level, here a couple weeks later Cipriano Contreras, just claims
horses and does this, he wins and 17% and claimers you know,
second off that that Leo Off with this horse, he wins and 17%
with that and overall was really, really good at Turfway
in that holiday meet leading into this one here.
And so I do have the 10 on topless with Contreras and
Esquivel and then on I landed on second on the 9th 821 here.
Dan from our caste and long Machado that's kind of a jockey
pick. I'll be real honest there's no
fraud or Carlos in this race and so I really trust a lot of a
child who's already hitting at 22 percent this month at Turfway
coming into the day, whatever he's doing tonight.
Added to the to the list Marc kasky a little less successful
the turf way than I think we would expect but this is this is
a nice horse coming out of optional claimer last time this
course ran at this kind of level at the 7500 level at Woodbine
lost by a by a length. And so that's the kind of horse
that we talk about Dan in these in these 8K.
Claimers can jump up and have another good day, right?
Kind of an every other horse and so she's got a serious shot
here. And then yeah, five and four
were mine. Next to after.
That's why I went for horses wide in the opening legs and the
6 race is an allowance over six. Furlongs, that is a six Furlong
shoot at Turfway seventy six thousand dollars in the purse.
Mr. Four-year-olds it up which has never won three races, I
think Dan we had a Jonathan Wong trainer on the on the show a
couple weeks ago. Yeah, and he's moving his barn
here and he said, one of the things he loves is that the
condition book, a Turfway, says things like, for four year olds
and up, which have never won three races period stop end of
conversation. Simple, simple.
This is why there's so many horses in the race because it's
so easy to meet the conditions. Yeah, yeah, you're absolutely
right. You know, he's been racing a lot
in California and they have to have about four or five
conditions / R8 too much seven horses in the field.
You don't have to do that at Kentucky.
You know, you write a typical condition and especially
especially Louis if you're if you're giving away seventy six
thousand. H it at Turfway Park, you're
going to, you're going to get a lot of horses.
Do you think it's interesting that we have a we have an a
Skittle. Um, here.
I'm sorry. Say it again.
So the three horse ran. It Royal Ascot.
Oh, yeah, well, and the Norfolk think.
Yeah, that's my top pick for an, ER, for a number of reasons.
West. Wesley, ward has a 30% with
layoffs horses like this. He does have Corrales, who's
having a great meat. The horses by not this time
who's one of my all-time favorite sires?
They thought enough of this horse.
As you just said to take him to Royal Ascot, he's been gilded
since his last race blinkers on. I think anybody else in this
field is going to have to run a lot to beat the three horse.
Yeah, I think you're right, they moved him to Turf way to train
as well, right? So I think they've been pointing
to something like this. I imagine with the anticipation
of running them into steaks company.
Next time I would if he does like this and Attic.
I have them on top as well. If you look at that Norfolk
sticks that he ran that group to a task.
It he runs fifth by a length in just an absolute blanket finish.
So if he can do that a tasket my senses, he'll be just fine to
Turfway. It purple dreams in this race
and I'm including Purple Dream coming out of the optional
claimer ranks moving into the allowance ranks here.
Did win last time. We ran a really solid 110 and to
over the 64 a long course there. If we can replicate that sticks
for a long time from the one whole horse.
Great great. But I think we'll have enough
time under Joe Ramos to make a move as well.
Paolo Lobo had a terrific, unbolt holiday mean at Turfway,
the two of them hitting at 33%. Joe off to a slow start since
the beginning of the year. But I think that can be turned
around very easily with better horses and do those things
Wesley word, by the way. First nine races, at Turf way
since the new year for wins three seconds, it's obviously
putting his horses in spots where they can wait, yeah,
that's the only other horse I use.
Who's Louis was the a horse. It looks like he might be a much
better horse which is funny for for a total and Candy but will
to run you go back to that race at Churchill Downs, two races
ago. That that was a, that was a
under there and you know, maybe he just doesn't like the
synthetic as much as the dirt but with Machado like been
Colebrook. I think he's Whispering.
I think he's an up-and-coming young trainer and so, and in
addition to the three, I use the eight.
Yeah. I like the been decided to stay
at Turf way because I think that if you give them a year to
figure it out, he'll be able to come back next year.
Be even better. I left that horse out only
because I watch that race last time out and that I don't think
that horse likes the synthetic. Yeah, something it does so but
but you know it's interesting that you mentioned twirling
candy. The Sire since I started doing
this show I think he is the most versatile sire that We've talked
about because far as surfaces distances because you'll see,
you know, some of his his his kids go, run to turns over the
dirt, love it, they Sprint on the turf.
Well they run anaesthetic well, it's pretty remarkable, frankly,
Royal. And and that's why Louis, he's
now, he now stands for sixty thousand dollars.
I think, I think he started out like 10 or 15, it sounds right?
Yeah, and now he's up to 60 so yeah.
Had some real nice horses and this is a serious.
This is a serious breeding job to moms out of his bio to sort
of humor. So this is a serious song,
breeding job on the 8th there as well.
Small fields to begin to pick for only 11 horses and nine
horses in the fifth and six races.
That is horrible sarcasm. I apologize in advance and we go
to the heat, the feature of the day and turf way.
It's the likely exchange, it's the seventh race of my love
that. Synthetic course, again start at
the start line finish at the start line.
One, turn here. I think we have a We have a
horse Dan that's going to win by open lengths.
Is my issues, my single? Yeah.
And I think she's my horse at the day.
I think she's no question. And her name is.
Kate's Kingdom from the the bill Walden barn?
And is that animal kingdom, which is interesting because
Animal Kingdom on his path. To the Kentucky Derby qualified
by winning Jeff, Ruby steaks at Turfway Park.
What's interesting is it was on the previous surface, but it
looks like his progeny are doing just well, the new one do.
Yeah. And and you know this, you see
that they change trainers here between our October 22.
William wall may actually sold this fill in November and I'm
doing this from memory which is never a good thing.
I think brought five or six hundred thousand dollars.
And she I mean she wanted grade 3 up at Woodbine before they
sold her and William Walton and his crew are just easy horses,
too easy, people to root for. So yeah.
Yeah. I picked for I've got a single
here with Kate's Kingdom. Yep.
You and I agree. She's for Freight Lifetime on
the synthetic, and by on the synthetic, I mean she's running
in Stakes company and she's waiting half of them on the
synthetic. That's what she is.
And so, right, I expect you're very much to be the best here.
If you're looking for another horse to use maybe in an Exacta
or Trifecta, something like that, you do have maybe later
here with Gerardo karelis, ability Mori.
The two of them, 48%, it Turfway Park.
If you wanted to go off and try to beat her, that would be the
horse to you. Use, she's just not as fast.
I mean, simply put, she's just not as fast.
Last time out, Kate's Kingdom beat beat a kiddie ride and beat
a champagne lady that field, is better than this field and she
won it by 4. She wanted by 3/4 of a length.
I think that she's gonna be able to pull away B&B in an even
better spot than that. So I, um, I'll look for her.
She is a deep closer. So if she does, get some some
trouble, she might not be able to do it.
The interesting thing about about maybe later.
Is going to be mid-pack, third, fourth place.
So there is a chance that that's the horse that jumps up, you
know, and takes the money here. But like I said, I think the
cakes Kingdom simply put is a better finisher and she's just
faster. So I think it sets up to be a
fun race but I think at the end of it, she'll be sitting there
by herself and in the Winner's Circle as well.
One for over ten races last year including that my charmer add
Turfway Park, which is listed steaks at the same level as this
one will close the day with a fifteen thousand dollar claimer
15, 2015, 10. If you I want to take the pounds
for non to lifers us, Phillies a 4.
And up, of course, I've never won two races.
One of only six states a little bit behind that starting line.
I love this sequence and because we get the two mile races, we do
get the nice allowance print in the middle and then we get
disclaimer at the end. I went again.
Fairly skinny. I have three horses here at and
how did you go? Well, I this race.
You know, what you have to do? When you handicap is, you have
to not only handicap the horses, you have to handicapped, how
much money you want to put into as sequence?
Very fact that, you know, the it looks like there are two
standout favorites in the middle of the field so you can't get
too crazy and so because I went six deep in the I only went too
deep here. Okay, and it's, and it's the two
favorites. It's a 9 and the 10.
As we always say, Louis pay attention to the also eligibles.
Because if the 11 draws in, I excuse me.
The 14 grows in, I think you have to use the 14 ran today.
Okay. So that I looked it up only
because it said on the floor Mentor today that horse Drew in
today so that horse ranch today, okay.
All right. So that makes Is it easy?
I'm nine, ten. And in this, I would tend 79
here. Dan.
I'm gonna include only time you're Joe Ramos, Claude Brown
field. One, risk is Myriad third last
time at this level over a mile and just ran out of a little bit
of steam. I'm wondering maybe the horse
can get the can get the distance this time.
Try that mile for the first time since September last time out
and so had been running in. Sprint's got back to going to
turns in the last time out. So I'll be interested to watch
horses run seven times with synthetic never won but I'm
detecting 2338 ticket Louis because I see not only are you
making good points but she's also by not this time.
There it is. All right. 72.
My ticket. Okay.
I just 11 and 12 runs last year. I get it but that's the level
we're talking about 11 and 17 runs.
I get it but we're talking about Joe Ramos.
So I really like again, slow start to the year but did when
18% of his races last year between horseshoe and Annapolis
and here and Ellis Park in other places.
And so I think he's, I think, she's at least got a reasonable
shot here for your philly. As you mentioned by, not this
time, tap it on the bottom side to the breeding really makes
sense, right? So to go to turns here and get a
little bit extra distance, so hopefully she'll be able to step
up and do just that one horse in here that was right behind her
was hat-trick the eight and that's a little one, which I do.
And so I always that's turquoise to Huntsville.
I look I look like one which I do.
Just creates a good run for a horse.
He might trick hat. Might be the horse that does it
likes to run right off of the pace.
Second third, that kind of thing and it did win to back at Belle
Terre over firm, go go to Milan to 16.
So at the distance, the horse has been going well and so so
it'll be interesting to see but I'm with you, I think Loma,
visit Loma Vista, this is just where karateka Rollins wins
these races. This is what he does is hurt
when he wins these walk-off races over and over and over
again, he gets better as the The day goes on.
It's a would not be surprised to see him and Mike maker.
I don't know. They're only hitting at 21%
Turfway Park. Damn, that's all, you know,
crappy terrible at sort of stats, all the stats on the
horse makes sense. It's in the blinkers off
actually on that horse because she is 14, 10 lifetime.
But maybe a little concerned that she's, you know, I'm always
interested in when they when they take the blinkers off of a
horse, that's more of a closer because you would think the
blinkers wouldn't be an issue but maybe they do.
Some of that awareness of where they are in the group.
Like you got to get going now because there's, there's seven
eight horses over here. It's time to go.
Go, go. So the interesting to see Amazon
queen, like you mentioned, the nine are no devil core and
Declan Cannon together on this one, not a combination.
We see very often but Delacour man, that aren't underrated 23
percent last year in all Races last year.
But with over 200 races. So I'm a Trader that really gets
it. Done.
He wins. He's won it claiming races over
his last 16 at four. A four percent.
So this is where Delacour really picks off these races.
So I agree with you, the tenant on this horse has been training
in turquoise Park. All the work makes sense Loma
Vista the same exact thing been working.
Actually here down the street at Churchill Downs training track
but should be good to go when she gets up to Florence has one
run that one race that I mentioned last time out with
with Gerardo as well. All right, Dan I appreciate you
jumping on. What are we talking about on the
show tomorrow? Since I know you're a very busy
man. You make the show sheets and
Everything else? Yeah yeah I've already started
my show prep for tomorrow morning.
I appreciate you very much Dan. So yeah, though, Dan and I host
a weekday Sports Talk radio show from 10 to noon here in in
Louisville, on ESPN, Louisville ESPN, 680 1057.
You can stream it anywhere in the world if you go get the app
or if you go to ESPN little.com. So if you want to hear Dan, yell
at me in the mornings, you're very, welcome to go do that.
Usually I talk a lot less and and talks a lot more.
And so if you like Dan Issel, come find us there, danceon On
Twitter at Daniel 44 as well. Go give him a follow.
He tweets once every two months and so it only to only to cause
trouble is only good to go. But, you know, I had a good
Well, they're probably getting it for nothing, but that's not,
that's not true. Thank you.
But you wrapped up three different story deals day.
Where do you think all the alcohol and scars come from?
Yeah, that's right. That's how they pay.
Well, I was telling Dad the we've covered the four, major
food groups, with our sponsors, on the show, pork pizza coffee
and pop over. Yeah, popcorn kick a rock, it's
gonna be great. Time.
I was at the radio station, there was free wings, so I can't
exactly complain. We did that.
Today was a good day. Oh man.
Yeah, so I can appreciate you jumping on.
No, always happy to do it. You guys, dancing in a couple
hours. It is something Zach.
Had you told me when I was a kid.
All right, so what here's what's going to happen guy from West,
Michigan? You're going to move to
Kentucky. You're gonna have four kids and
you're gonna host a radio show with Kentucky's all-time leading
scorer and rebounder. No, none of that though.
It's like people think sponsored and able to talk about horse
racing and And by the way, my sequence for Turfway park is in
the sheet this weekend, Green Sheet racing Green Sheet
racing.com, go check that out. I turned all that in today
around 2:00 1:30. Yes, I guess those chicken wings
exact mentioned and so go check that out, Green Sheet, a great
sponsor of our show, of course and so Green Street Racing.com
Zach. We've done a good job here.
We had some funny. I want to give a shout out
because we had a year in review shows we put out three and three
days. Great.
Great numbers from our listeners, really appreciate it,
but also Got some response because our guys on sure of a
very critical of Ron flatter. And I have to say, I agree with
John. But I also really like Ron
Flanders hope. Like, so it's interesting thing
about podcasting Zack is that is that you get to talk about what
you like, right? And you and if you're lucky like
the, you get to talk to people, you like, right?
So I get to talk to Dan and ranjan and we have race Rachel
on. And, you know, we have those
ponies on, we do whatever, right?
And, and so, I want to set up next week by the way, Zack and I
are doing a double header Hang out with you for two shows.
Next Thursday, one at 7:00 eastern wanted 80s, 7:00
eastern, Laurel Park Stakes preview.
They got a bunch of State breads going next to be going to be
great. I'm excited.
I got the Ping from Maryland. They said, hey can we do a show
and I thought, oh crap, I've already booked someone from
Fairgrounds are guy John dueling track announcer down at
Fairgrounds because little Compass next weekend.
And I said, you know what This is the horse racing.
Happy hour. If I have to drink twice to be
great. That's what I'm gonna do.
So we're do a handicapping show at 7 about the stakes of oral.
We're going to talk about that, pick five that all state. 35,
reminder 12%. Take out at Laurel, totally just
one of the best values in the country so we'll go through
that. Plus you get Dave Rodman?
My favorite track, announcer in the world so that's awesome.
Then at 8:00, we'll do the normal Show preview.
Look back to the races that we talked about today.
Specially the Busan do but we'll look back at the Busan to talk
about that. How badly I did on this pic for
being totally wrong. And then we'll get into, will
get into what's going on at the fairgrounds with our guy, John
Dooley, Zack. That's gonna be an interesting
show if there's John, no, no, John is a I don't want to call
him a neanderthal with technology but it's close.
Close, close close. He is the version of the Luddite
that handle technology but has given up.
He's never needed it. Be the track announcer.
Exactly. Like, on my calf.
That's just life. You know.
And so but he if, you know, if you recognize the name, John
Daly for years called the action, that Arlington so-called
more than more than probably two dozen are lead to Millions.
And then, of course, moved the fairgrounds in the winter, so
you do the Chicago, New Orleans circuit every year has picked up
the duties at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
So I have had beers with John at a Buffalo Wild Wings.
How about that? So he was, he was enthusiastic
to come on tomorrow when I was texting him in only John Dooley
fashion. He was sitting in a Hooters
because of course, We'll get her next week, 7:00 8:00, you can
watch, you can listen whatever it is.
However, you honestly, when we say it we made it however you
access the show, we really appreciate it.
If you haven't tried it up, we do have the video stream on
Spotify. If you use the Open Spotify, it
is free. You're going to have to watch
them ads but it's, it's worth it to see my beautiful face and
the, the beautiful face with one day in Israel.
So there you go. So ya know what's funny is that
because I started getting the text This is always the time of
year, I always get the text. Hey man, do you have space for
me for Derby. Hey man.
What do we do? If we're picking this?
Hey man, what's going on with this?
And I love I love because because this is how I got into
the sport, was that we moved here.
And you know, this is you went, you went on the first one, we
got into it by going to the Oaks.
Yeah. And then having a derby party at
the house and that's how I sort of started getting into this.
I think our first was 2009, No 2010.
We went to the ocean 2010 because I only know that because
Kristen was still, we just had a kit, that's how we notice.
It's like, it's so, so we go to the the 2010 Oaks, and then it's
kind of built from there. And, you know, the first derby
with. Did you go to, orb, did you go
to Derby 139 with us? Yes.
Yes. Okay, good.
And so, or was my first derby and we got into it that way, but
it's fun. Now that I'd become the touch
point for so many people to figure out what to do.
You've been public Would be you know, what a freaking blast.
That place is also the Preakness is so different and so great.
And so we'll be doing all those things and then go to figure out
Belmont, we got to figure out Breeders Cup and Matt determine
if you are listening my friend. We want to figure out a trip in
the fall where we come to Golden Gate, either the weekend before
the weekend after breeders come. And so we're going to fly out to
either San Francisco, hang out with you and then drive down to
San Diego or to l.a. she's keeping stats and Anita. it or
we're gonna fly out to LA, go to the Breeders Cup and I'm going
to drive up your way to do that and I'm going to spend a week
pretending I don't have a family and aren't those great weeks
back when you get to pretend you today, are it's more like I get
to happily talk about my family rather than actually talk to my
family, you know, like like Family, happy to see when I'm
with them. But, you know, you know, that as
a parent. Yeah.
The Daily Grind man is really out of here.
Yeah, it's totally. It's like it's his where's Anya?
I mean that's one of the reasons why I've learned to like
absolutely love the RV because we do it as a family.
There's like, nowhere to go nowhere to be and like, you
don't have those opportunities. When you at home, right?
Like, there's always something. It's, like, kids got to go to an
activity. War, it's who's in charge of the
TV or whose friend's house or that?
Yeah, right. My brothers, my brother's doing
this, and yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, no.
But you know, we're going on vacation in February, the
family. And I just, I'm already like
looking forward to one of the best things about those
vacations and you're talking about with the RV and we're
going to be staying, you know, somewhere in.
Yeah. Every time we do these and I'm
sure you do this to your like how can my kids do this?
Can they, you know, can and then Time they they show up, they do,
they're great, right? And there also we have a great
time, you know you're at you You create these memories with your
kids and you realize, oh shoot, I should have been created so
many more of these memories. That's it's really it's really
the case in so I'm excited that we made these place for February
and we'll go figure that out. But like I'm worried about my
kids being stuck in a small metal box while we're on the
road and then they don't care and they love it.
They love it. Yeah.
Everything's great for them and then click I like you're like
why can't we live in the RV? And I'm like well that's a
question unto itself. There are lots of Pages about
that my son, but yeah, so I think so that lots of fun again
or starting a PR Green Sheet, race increase your racing back
home, which I got all those things.
We're going to have some cool stuff.
The spring. So stay stay, stay tuned.
We'll be getting it all those things but I think we should
wrap it up Zach. What a 747 is just about, right.
If you play this on 1.2 you probably got out of here in 40
minutes. You're welcome.
And so yeah. Not good to go.
Zach. You got any any strong feelings
on any of the races? We talked about, you agree with
us on the singlet Turfway. Oh my gosh, Strikers, young that
sing. Okay, that is such, it's such a
good race and that's a solid horse, you know?
It's the one thing that now that I've talked myself through that
race, I'm a little convinced maybe later is going to jump up
and pick it off for no reason. Despite the speed ratings and
all those things which would be fine.
But that's the horse racing is about but she's 3423 lifetime, I
just I can't exactly. And that's a second favorite.
I can't do it. I mean I just it's also you know
what I've really appreciated. she ate about horse racing about
this podcast, is We I feel like are on that that first wave of
people who are really appreciating secondary racing
markets right where you get a lot more pressure on an aqueduct
a Turf way. Oh, we're gonna talk more old
next week where we talk Fairgrounds.
Absolutely, I'm with you. It's not a horse racing isn't
seven races, which is what it feels like when you watch
coverage. Yeah, and so and be seated even
pump up. It line, you know?
I mean it. Yeah, no, you're right.
I mean, it is what it is. I think, even the derby cover.
I'm not going after just the Derby, right?
It's the Derby database that. I'm not going.
I'm not going after him to see. By the way, they do a great job,
but, but they didn't. I mean, I never heard about
flight line on Sunday Night Football.
Yeah. They should've just showed to
show the stretch at the Pacific mile or the Pacific classic sees
me to show that he still wants him to do it be okay.
You'll be. All right.
People are like, what what what is the horse doing?
What? What did he do there with a
horse? Do it.
But that's, that's what we should go over.
There is no, I'm happy to do it and you know, we go to Indiana
Derby every year. It is the it's the local you
know, horse racing is is like college football and that it's
wildly local wildly Regional and and it's one of the cool things
about this podcast is that we get to talk to people all over
the country. You know, James Welch, jumps.
On from Scotland, I must say all over the world.
Yeah, it's so funny to me. That live here and they're like
dude I don't get to halfway in the winter, I bet Aqueduct, I
bet Fairgrounds I bet, you know, Oaklawn, I bet go string
whatever it is you know, I bet Santa Anita, I bet Golden Gate,
you know, whatever it is and it's so fun to that horse
racing. People are like, no, I'm going
to find my thing and I'm gonna follow that thing and you're
right. Yeah, it's, it's that way, you
know. And and I always, you know, I'm
sure people who listen, this podcast is trying to hear about
it. But, you know, that trip to both
wherever you're so special for me.
I yeah, I really enjoy it. The people at Pimlico or so,
dude, they hand you the scratches on black-eyed.
Susan day practice day and they're handwritten.
They are written in the ladies. There are great, but they on the
room, I remember, I remember it was a man, It's gotta be 20.
whenever The Royal Wedding happened with Prince Harry,
Who's now obviously a douchebag. And I have a theory on that.
By the way, we should get into that right now, but it was like
Qibla Co and then royal wedding. And I remember walking up front
to grab this crap. That's, that's a lie.
They walk around with the week of the wedding.
Yes, they met was in 2018. Thank you.
And so justify. There you go.
Yeah, and so I am there and they're walking around.
They're handing out the scratches.
These hands. In that photocopied, scratches
at the Preakness. And I said, man, I thought I was
going to get away from the world wedding and the woman little
shoe Smiles. Me she goes, no chance.
Great, that's perfect. And so he like, And especially
media will tell you. It is the easiest triple
Commerce to cover not even close and it's and I get you can talk
about the structure, you can talk about, whatever the view
from the roof and the view from that that that look over hanging
from the Press Box. Frankly As Good As It Gets in
horse racing for media and I'm not complaining about 322 at
Churchill that we've got our spot in 65. 66, I get it.
It's awesome when they take care of us.
Oh man, but drink for that roof, it's something that's true.
Yeah. Right.
Yeah you hang out with the Baltimore sniper squad on the
roof there? No it's different and it's it's
own thing and what was the interesting thing?
So I didn't do this last year but the year before, I'll be
there, this spring next year they started they started just
putting out coolers of beer, it wasn't that there was a
bartender like it Derby. There wasn't, you know, you
know, there wasn't cocktails, it was cans of beer and I remember
thinking, This is preakness. This is it.
This is it. They get it.
They know what they are. They don't mess around.
And frankly, by the way, for the Preakness underrated for Derby.
Therefore for me to underrated you can if you get a good rap,
you could a good salad, you know, like underrated.
They do a good job there. And so they do, they do Sports
food, like the kind of food you would expect if you went to a.
I don't know that. I kind of disagree.
I I have the chicken, right? It's like a chicken salad,
wrappers. Of the last.
It was delicious. It was great though.
I don't know. I go down to slum.
That's a star. Wow, pretty sure that's the
other part that. Yeah, the fries.
Well the other part is like that in or Paddock.
Yeah. That they have and people
standing at the glass. No, it's different.
It's really fun and it along it, right?
They knew what they were going for and they did yeah.
Long Live Pimlico man. If we can get Maryland, sports
betting at Pimlico to so they can raise enough money.
To keep that place open, give them 30 slot, machine, something
cripes Almighty, just let him have some, but yeah.
No, for sure. I, yeah, I'm an unabashed in fan
and I love the, I mean, here's I always, by the way is up because
because this is a number that I remember seeing.
Yeah, Maryland's first month of sports betting, Five hundred
million dollars? Yeah, of course.
Yeah. Right.
Right. Like one month like the race
tracks of Maryland need to take advantage of that.
You know I agree with you. Yeah, this poor schmuck in those
places, I'm with him. In Charlestown racing, it Races
and slots. That's right.
Across the border in West Riot across the board.
Jim Laurel could could pick up some easy.
Money Pimlico could pick up some easy money made, especially
Pimlico, it's right in the middle of the city, but Laura
was Laurel is great. It's there's no no reason to
look ho Baltimore. Yeah, because of the laws there,
there's no reason Pimlico. Shouldn't have an OTB slash
sports book on the armor. Yep, no reason.
No reason, go figure it out but for sure.
I, but yeah, it's it's very easy to cover.
The stakes. Barn is is one of the most
unique things in North American Racing where all of the best
horses are in the same place. All of the trainers are there.
The sound bites are easy to get that.
Indoor Paddock thing is so easy. It is, it is really its own, its
own thing. And look, I love Churchill but
it there's nothing like coming back this mad because your know
it is your shoulder to shoulder with everybody.
That's right. Absolutely.
But when we watched American pharoah wins, Jay-Z and Beyonce
were literally across the track from us.
Right - right? No, it in the tent.
Was that your first Preakness? Those, my first Preakness with
good seats. I can see the race.
I wanted to freakness once dude, you would be getting those seats
was just the perfect. It was crazy, Finish Line like
perfect and those great but like I see you have the grainy cell
phone photo, where we literally, we were sitting on the finish
line of American pharoah coming in in the literal pouring and
sheathing ring, they did a interview after he was carrying
20 pounds of water. Yeah, absolutely. while I was
wild you and I Go back.
If you are listening right now, go back and listen to Larry
calmness or Dave Rodman. Try to call that race because
they don't get serious like the camera here's a bit ly.
An eighth of a mile where you could not see a horse.
And you know what I think about The things that I've seen,
that's why by the way the justify Triple Crown is as good.
It's not the so Pharaoh. Plus the Breeders Cup Classic is
different. It's a different class.
I get it, but to win on the radius Derby ever.
And then to go to Pimlico with like, whatever that fog is
called admire Marilyn. I don't even know the name of
it. See you something.
I'm sure. And then to win the Belmont and
then literally to go to the front of the Belmont, it just
win. Like just go on front style fund
is as good, a Triple Crown is you'll ever see.
It really is because he wanted all the conditions and I mean
just just so different just so so different.
But I do remember being there for the fair, one with you.
And the guys in front of us had been to the derby. 50 years in a
row, do you remember? Yeah, they decide it because it
was the 50th year, they had gone to the derby.
They were also going to go to the entirety of the Triple Crown
and what a hell of a year to pick in 2015, because they got
to see that. And so, just the best.
I remember being so happy for those guys that they were going
to York with a horse that very clearly had a shot.
I mean, American fare was so, obviously different he was so,
obviously different. I've been to a couple days
before that I've been, you know, the following sport a little bit
but Pharaoh was so obviously different and it was very cool
to see him to win that gosh, because they're running and the
lightning is off in the distance.
It was wild, it was wild, and it reminded me how much TV drives
everything well, and it's because everything was like, no,
no, yeah, that's right. So, it was like, cloudy and we
were like, oh yeah, you know, it's, it's my train a little
bit. And then like half the only if
they're, if there's ever a horse that could just swamp this
without even tripping, it's American pharoah, like that's
it. It and he did a trip.
No one can get up the acceleration to get past him.
No, and he's right out. Front stayed out front.
That was his style, man, for sure.
All right, Zach, let's get out of here.
