Not that long ago. It it was really not that I know

it really wasn't right. I mean just really 25 years ago

Why not? We're here every week at this

time. My name's Lou Yerbok, he is

Barry Spears. Apologies to you listening on

the non live feed of this thing in the 1st 40 seconds of the

show or so, but we'll get into it, I promise.

Wishing well this weekend. And Barry, since we've been

doing this show, we have seen many good cards.

This is about as good as we've ever seen.

Brother, how are you today? Hanging in there, excited about

this card. Actually, there's a couple of

horses I I do like quite a bit that probably won't be

favorites. So yeah, I'm always anxious to

to cash in on one of those. No doubt about it.

Of course, the Derby prep this weekend is the Battaglia up at

Turfway Park and they have their their monthly races leading up

to the Preakness over at Laurel Park as well.

Frank Vespi, Mackenzie Pfeiffer joined me yesterday for that

Barry, you and I are going to head W to Santa Anita for this

card. And cool thing to be able to

announce on this show as well is that Barry and I will be out

there for Big Cap Day as well. So in a couple of weeks, we'll

be making our way to Los Angeles, the great Race Place

itself. Really appreciate everybody out

there. Wanted to say quick shout out to

Jasmine Torres, who works out there in their publicity area

group. And she has been super, super

proactive on this and making sure that we've got a spot to be

both for my radio show on Friday and then for the podcast itself

on Saturday. The plan right now is on

It's like, I don't know, it's why you and I went a little bit

earlier for the Breeders cup this year, right, because we

just wanted to see Del Mar sort of on normal, quote UN quote

normal day, right? You know, it, it'll be nice to

be at Santa Anita. Yes, it's it's big cap day, it's

San Felipe day, whatever. It's still part of their normal

program, right? It leads into the Santa Anita

Derby, right? It's not their like big biggest

day. So I'm actually excited to be

out there for that. And you know, it's a I've only

ever been to Santa Anita for the Breeders Cup.

Right. And I have never been to Santa

Anita. You know, I, I have to live

through you for now until we go out in a couple weeks, but it

should be a good time. I'm, I'm excited to finally meet

some people that that are real regulars at Santa Anita that

didn't get out to Delmar, things like that.

So it it's going to be cool to to be out there.

Yeah, I, it's, I, I'm so excited to get to take you there.

I the other part of it is you can't understand why people feel

the way about Santa Anita that they do until you go there,

right? It's one of those you learned

that at Del Mar You you learned that at Del Mar, right?

Everybody shut up about Del Mar. Now you love Del Mar, but the

it's a I'm very much excited to just be there on an LA day, if

that makes sense right now, where it's not a bunch of guys

like me that are in from out of town where it's just OK, this is

he who's here. It's what I love.

You know, Churchill on a on a Friday at noon, right?

Those those are my people, right?

That that's who knows, I should say my be those are our people,

Barry, right. That's, you know, the the normal

early pick three out of Friday, couple of starter allowances and

a claimer, right? Those are our people for sure.

It's part of a 10 race card and as I was telling Barry to open

the show, as good a race, a set of races as I can remember that

Barry. Race one on the card here and

guess what it is? It's a mile race on the turf

because God intended it that way at Santa Anita Park State

Bread's here, optional claimer at the $50,000 level.

They're running for $70,000 in here and we're on on the

three-year olds, 3 year old side of things here, Barry.

Enough horses entered in this race.

We got nine straight up just three-year olds running at this

condition. I was very worried, Barry, We,

we did the card last week and it was not like this.

And so this seems to be balancing out so, so much of

that. Where'd you land in the first

one? Yeah, this I thought this race

was kind of interesting because you got horses that were running

in better races last year and land in this spot to start their

year, which is kind of ominous. I you would figure some of these

might be headed into like a state bred non yeah, K bred kind

of states, yeah, and and and you'd think they would start

there, but they're end up in here.

I guess it's more due to timing than anything else.

That being said, I do like a horse in the 6th Ventry strand

that didn't show a whole lot in the speed figure department, but

I think has a lot of upside. They're getting Hector Berrios

on Saturday, the last race at this $50,000 level at six

furlongs on the main on the flat 6 furlongs, which does make a

difference. I think the stretch out makes a

lot of sense being from both Dioro Bernardini Mayer should be

able to stretch out just fine and should get a pretty decent

trip there. There's some speed in here so

the pace should be honest and I think Hector Barrios gets this

one over the hump at a non favorite price. 649 for Barry

here in the first race. I do not have the four in my

handicapping. Barry.

Third beer, I do think is one of the more logicals here dropping

out of the Audi. Logan, one of those what,

frankly, one of those steaks you're talking about.

Oh yeah, I mean, third, third beer is definitely the horse to

beat in this race. I I just have a little bit of

reservations that a, that the horse ran OK in that five horse

field. Probably should have ran better

in my estimation, and I don't think the pace actually really

suits this source. I think they would rather run

with some faster horses upfront. I'm really trying to figure out

how good Third Beer is, because obviously we saw that horse in

the Zuma beach. One of my nice scores over

Breeders' Cup weekend was that stark contrast who won that

race, ran second to Gestad, both of them in that race as well.

And I think I threw third beer in Barry into my Exacta hoping

to get the kind of pay that we did.

I think was that an 80 to 1 Barry something?

Ridiculous. Yeah.

Something like that. Yeah.

Yeah, Something crazy. Must be nice and can't wait to

get back to the West Coast and but the but I was I I put third

beer in that spot and then he didn't show up.

I just I wonder I'm hoping I'm hopeful that this is a good

horse he moves takes a step forward here.

I worry though, like you opened and talking about that he's he's

regressing unfortunately and so one to watch, but I decided to

go ahead and play against him. Barry, I'll play you're 6 and

you're 9, but I'll go in the opposite direction.

The 9 horse here try and turf for the first time will be can't

help myself. And this is at least in part

because of what I saw with Plutarch, believe it or not, as

Floran Giroux was out West, I think that he's going to have

this one run a lot more like it did over the 6 1/2 at Santa

Anita a couple of races back as opposed to like it was in the

King. Glorious where Hector barriers

let this one fall behind quite a bit behind.

Smooth, smooth and sturdy. And I I I wonder if the mile is

a little bit too much, but I think they're at least going to

try to get close to the lead from that outside post and make

a run at it from there. So I'm interested in can't help

myself here. I know you kind of agree with as

well. The six year adventure stand is

really interesting. I want to make the case, though,

for dark blue, who's coming out of a maiden win at Santa Anita

over the same course. Not very fast though, in a

minute, 37 flat. Some of the fractions were

probably about what this horse is going to have to do.

What I do like though Barry was that was first time going a

mile. That was the first time this

year running with Lasix. I think those conditions match

up again here. Son of Maxfield.

Obviously the distance ain't going to be a problem and so

I'll put the three horse here in the second spot for me, 9, three

and six for me. I'm going to try to beat Third

Beard here, which means for sure people go ahead and single that

horse in the early pick 5. You have third beer might be

tough, but I I'm willing to I'm willing to bet against in this

spot though. Yeah, give it a try to open the

card there. Here's Barry and I am Louie.

We hang out every Friday and do something called SoCal

Saturdays. Going through the entire card

out there at Santa Anita Park. We'll be out there ourselves for

the San Felipe and of course, the Big Cap in just a couple of

weeks. Race 2 on the card.

Up next, of course, starts the early pick.

Four $5000 claimer here, 6 furlongs on the dirt Berry,

$16,000 in the Kitty. When you see the name Morello,

do you get the reference? Yes, Tom Morello.

There it is. All right, one of these for many

places. But of course, Rage Against the

Machine, a favorite of this show.

You can tell by my sweater. And there's nothing, Barry,

there's nothing more satisfying than having Rage It Against the

Machine, just bumping in your minivan and confusing people.

It's very, very high level stuff.

Very high. Level stuff.

Well, I have to get a minivan, and I also have to invest in

some Rage Against the Machine. I need 2.

Things. There's a lot going on there

that aren't going to happen for Barry because he's living a

little better than I am. I went to the five horse here,

Barry. I'm going to try to beat Morello

in this spot. Went 5-2 and three in here.

The outside horse in Carol's comic, 5 to 2.

Tyler Baze gets them out. And you know what's good, Barry?

The second that I pointed out that Tyler Bayes was one for 50,

he went and won and went ahead and won four of his next 20

miles, which is good for Tyler Bayes.

This one was last seen at San Anita in his 6250 claimer.

I think the horse will run a very similar race and I think

it's good enough to win here. And so if that horse can get up

and finish this race in sub one O 5, I think it's got a real

shot here. And I'm just not when I look at

a Morello, for example, who is O for 10 in 2025, one for six in

2024. I'm in no position to take a six

to five kind of price here, Barry, so I'll put him second

because I do think he's the second most likely winner here.

But 5-2 and three for here. I'm not even going to talk

through Alpine Thunder. I just put a third horse up

because I feel like I'm obligated to.

Where'd you land in this one? Yeah, I reluctantly landed on

Morello. I think they were just running

this horse in spots they couldn't win for a long time.

Just in a little bit of disbelief because they did pay a

pretty penny for this horse, but this is the level for this horse

at this point in time. His races were just a little bit

better than everybody else's. Even though he probably won't

get the best of trips, I don't believe even in this spot, I'd

like to see him a little bit closer to the pace and look like

he tried to do that the last time.

Going a mile at the $16,000 level drops all the way to 5

where they probably can win. There's not much in here.

So I, I, I think they'll be OK. I thought Gentlemen's Club might

show some speed and hang around. That's really the only thing.

There's really not much on paper.

And, and actually Morello, if they were smart, they would try

to go to the lead here and outlast these horses.

But we'll see what happens. And then Alpine Thunder, kind of

the clunker should pass horses late.

Yeah, I think that's probably right.

Gentlemen's Club's an interesting one just cuz like

you said, if this one just keeps going, I think he's probably a 7

furlong horse that lives in California.

And so he's got to run a bunch of 6 and, and miles, right?

I mean, I think he's that probably that kind of horse.

It's just the conditions don't seem to match up with him for

sure. Barry Spears Lyubo hanging out

with you. Moving on to race three out

there on the card on Saturday at Santa Anita Park.

This is the horse racing happy hour.

We're back on the turf going a mile again on the Philly side of

things here, $50,000 optional claimer for non 2 lifers.

Phillies and Mares 4 and up in this one, Barry.

I landed on the four Miss Artois.

If you look at this horse's last four races, they were hung out

completely wide in just about all of them.

One one of the races to break the maiden at Del Mar in August

of last year and just kind of kept getting wide trips.

They found a level in this $50,000 level that they probably

fit best. It gets massive post relief

here. I think that makes all the

difference. I like Miss Artois quite a bit

in general. If we get 6 to one we might be

pushing all in. Yeah, Tiago Pereira rides here

second in my handicapping as well for Richard Baltus.

And this is one that's run two straight, very good races.

Ran out of gas, the one before that at Santa Anita.

So if the horse can hold up for that mile like we saw at Del Mar

back in August at a mile on the 16th, frankly should be good to

go there. I totally agree with you on that

one. You also have the one in your

handicapping braking from the rail, not something that you

love usually, but Lila horse we've talked about before.

We'll break from there. Yeah, same kind of deal was out

wide the last two trips didn't get very much out of them, at

least post position wise and and was hung out wide.

Now they're on the drop, gets a better post position, but not

the greatest post position. That's pretty much why I put

this horse second. I I think they're going to lay a

little bit closer to the pace. Kimura seems to tend to do that

and I think that's the plan should be formidable.

I'm I'm really intrigued in the price because if this one kind

of gets overlooked because of that layoff, I might kind of

center around just those top 2 alone.

All right, So 41 and seven for Barry, but a gap between the one

and the seven there in his handicapping, I would quite of a

different direction. I had the four second of my

handicapping. So obviously very much in

agreement with Barry on that. I think there's a 10 to one shot

in here, Barry that's got a big boy shot.

This is one that's been running at the optional 20 level.

Does have to move to the 50 here, but tried stakes company

in the Turf Classic State bread last time at Santa Anita.

A mile and an eighth is the only time this horse has missed the

board and he only missed by two and a quarter lengths from the

winner, frankly, and so missed 3rd place by about a length.

I think dropping back into this company and I think Armando IU.

So 12:50. You're going to give me this

horse at 12:50. Goodness gracious.

Already won this year at Santa Anita.

Going to be high and. The dirt.

Do you think so? Goodness gracious, I'll take it.

So give me all of it. I I The numbers at the optional

claiming level were good enough. I saw enough.

We get back to the turf again here there's a horse that's run

15 times. Only run 3 * 2 of those wins

were in four starts on the turf. I don't know what I'm missing

here, but she gets back to the turf here.

Give me stop digging the six the six horse here 5 year old

daughter of Marazzic. Sure, why not let's go.

But I think her best form is right now out of the Callahan

barn. He and I you so need to

breakthrough together for me to really buy into the jockey

trader number here. But I I I love this horse in

here. This is a Barry that's a Barry

Spears play and he should be ashamed that I got to it before

he did. The 9 horse in here is

delightful Laura. Have you noted delightful Laura.

I I had AI don't know how you grew up, Barry, as far as your

friends and and how you interacted with their families,

but I had like I was really lucky.

I had like three or four other moms who were like really

formative moms in my life. I was really, I wonder what was

Dave Laura, nice lady. How about that?

Hey, it's always cool to have a nice neighborhood like.

That no kidding, She was. She was the popcorn mom.

That's what I really liked about Laura.

You come up with those always like nice fresh popcorn.

Oh, let's go cookies or something.

Yeah, but she was the, their house always smelled great and

she always made popcorn. That was that was Laura.

So she was delightful. She'll break from the outside in

the 9. Victor Espinoza gets the mount

and it's interesting. He's actually getting, I don't

know, he's riding half of Mike Smith's number, something like

that. Whatever.

But he's winning, dude. Dude wins when he rides that's

exactly right. And this is 1 coming off of a

bunch of very good turf runs, frankly, a second by a neck,

third by a half, second by 3/4 and then a win before that in a

maiden 62 five. And so I, I think this one fits

at this level, Barry and I, I think the life of Laura, a

daughter of Uncle MO, makes a lot of sense in this grouping.

And so we will move on now to race 4.

Race 4 on the card here with Socal Saturdays, Louie Rambo and

Barry Spears on the so the excuse me on the horse racing

happy hour. Race 4 is a maiden 1256 furlongs

on the dirt here. It's Cal Brats and we're looking

for Phillies and mares 4 and up for this condition.

Barry and embrace 4 means I go first here.

I landed on the four horse, not so surprising to anyone that I

like a second time starter and that play for me is that second

time starter in here. Daughter of great stuff keeps

Thiago Pereira here. I thought in the first run,

Barry, it was interesting because it's amazing what can

happen to a horse on debut. And Mackenzie Pfeiffer did this

to me yesterday on the show where she was describing a

maiden run for Taj Mahal, who will run in the in the Miracle

Wood at Laurel Park tomorrow. And she was saying he

essentially learned four things in his maiden run and it was how

to start, how to deal with getting bumped, how to, you

know, sit in the pocket and then how to pass horses at the end.

She was like, he might have gotten A4 race, elementary

education in one race, that kind of thing.

Play for me got like a triple education last out for sure.

So the horse breaks just fine. But then you could tell the

horse gets out of the gate and it's like, oh, wow, there's

there's seven other horses here. And the horse breaks from the

outside, breaks out a little bit, comes up with the group,

then falls back a little bit, then gets into the pocket and

then fades at the end. To me, the fade at the end,

Barry, is very normal on debut, right?

You're just not ready to go with these furlongs at full speed,

whatever. But this horse seemed to really

put it together about halfway through the race, Barry.

I'm hoping that carries through through the whole thing here.

So I'll take the four horse on top in this spot.

I went to the two horse after that as my computer acts like a

jerk. There we go.

Bitter truth. First timer here for Craig Lewis

and this is this is Craig Lewis's level Barry.

This is what he does. He's living in the maiden

claiming world. He's living in the claiming

world. He's living in the debut maiden

claimers. He's winning 20% of those two of

his last 10. They pay by the way, at 382.

ROI Abelescano gets them out here.

I'm just fascinated by this horse here, Barry, because all

the other ones. That are in this race other than

play for me have shown an ability to not get anywhere near

the leader at the end of the race.

And so I'll try the one that hasn't made a mistake yet and

then I'll go to the 8 horse after that in Tom Starr.

Another short number at 5:00 to 2:00, but was very good last

time at this level. Finally got back down to this

level has been good in this kind of company both at Losal and

then here. So I'll go with those three in a

row. 4/2 and 8:00, you got the same three.

You got a different order. Yeah.

I I kind of think that those are the horses that we'll

concentrate on, the horses that really haven't run as much as

the others, although Tom Starr, who I did include is has 13

starts. But the horses that have run in

this race don't look particularly good.

They they've kind of proven themselves to be win challenged

at this point. And my thinking here is just let

bitter truth go to the front and see how far they can take them.

This horse has been, you know, training 4 furlongs, 5 furlongs.

I I think the stamina will be there.

It's just a matter of how fast this horse is early, you know,

but there's also that situation. Everybody kind of goes and, and

it could get a little heated up front and that's kind of why I

included Tom Starr. I think this horse is probably

the best closer at this particular level, but again,

just doesn't want to win, so it's always going to be a

crapshoot. I I would never take a horse in

this race that's under 2 to one, but here we are.

Yeah, I think the the prevailing theme from Barry and me there is

that play the two and the four and then move on with your life

is probably the way that we would look at this is, you know,

if you're playing, like if you're playing pick 5 or

something, we would lean on those two horses.

Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.

OK, alright. Don't want to speak for you

Barry. You know that's the purpose of

this guy. Back and forth format.

One of the same. It's all good look alike too.

It's obviously we are from the same mother race 5 closes out

the early pick five of course and starts that pick six.

I'm sure there'll be a carryover $32,000 Claver 6 1/2 for once on

the that's such AI don't know why that's so funny to me Barry,

There are so many you and I This is This is why we get along

because you and I have weird senses of humor and we we find

weird things funny and just the yeah right and and the the

carryover. I don't know why that's funny to

me, but it just is. 6 1/2 on the turf here for four and up 32

claimers. Non winners of a race since

January are allowed to wait here.

Barry and Odd Dubbard race means you and my odd fellow get to go

first. Thanks.

But I thought this race was kind of interesting and a little bit

all over the place there. There seems to be a sort of what

I would call cheap, inexpensive speed here.

OK, all right. And it kind of opens this race

up for somebody to kind of take over.

And I think the Six Pioneer Prince can do that.

I I found it interesting that Doug O'Neill goes to Edwin

Maldonado off the layoff here. And I don't know if you've been

paying attention, but Doug O'Neill has been doing this sort

of recently. Horses, you know, on off a long

layoff, getting a speed rider and, and kind of getting

forwardly placed and winning races.

He did it last week down the hill.

And I think this horse kind of fits that same mold running it

in mile races, cutting back to 6th and, and in fact, you could

arguably say this horse's better races have come at the Sprint

distance and you could say his May 4th race, 2024 might be one

of his better races overall. I think this is a a very

winnable spot for a horse like this because there's a lot of

question marks with a lot of these horses, including Pioneer

Prince. But I'm willing to take that in

a race that seems to be wide open and ripe for a price. 62

and 11 for Barry. I'm going to go ahead and have

you talk about the two horse in here as well in Central

Dispatch. Shorter price here coming out of

a 6 1/2 are. What do you like about this one?

Yeah, I mean this horse showed some resolve after the the year

and year plus layoff was keeping good company before that.

You see Motorius in there, Doctor Venkman in there one time

in in the maiden race. But this horse hasn't really

proven to to be outstanding, but hasn't proven to be bad either.

I mean, this horse won a couple of races on the flat course,

which is encouraging. I'm not really sure what to make

of this horse, but I think this horse is probably better than

more than half of this field. So he's Barry's a top 362 and

11:00. I'm going to have you keep going

here. The 11 horse is Harsen horse

that we've talked about for for sure on this show.

I think both of us picked him when he won at Del Mar back in

November. Off the bench in January.

Good second place finish at the 25 level moves up to 32 here.

Kind of needs a trip and that's why I put this horse third.

Plus that plus the outside post is really going to make it

difficult. But this horse, you know, given

the right circumstances, if this pace kind of heats up up front,

this horse will become running late, like really fast.

So I wouldn't discount that because there are versions of

this race where this pace can get really hot.

But I I don't suspect that's going to be the case.

I I think it's going to be moderate at best and a horse

like the one I picked on top high and your Prince should get

a nice, you know, kind of stalking trip.

When I open the show, Barry talking about how good this card

is, it's this kind of race that makes this card freaking

awesome, right? I mean, this is such a tough

race. It's great.

It is, you know, if you have a strong opinion in this one and

you're willing to press it, you could probably make a fair

amount of money in here. Barry and I went very different

directions in this one, other than we both had the two in our

handicapping. I went with the three and the

seven on top. I think Dodge is just really

interesting here. Juan Hernandez gets the mound

for Vladimir Seren and this is one that almost won at the 50

level last time. I think 32's probably a little

more apartment for this son of Cairo Prince.

And before that, though, we saw him on the dirt, finished

fourth. Before that though, he was

disqualified from purse money and wouldn't be eligible for

this condition, you know, for actually, yeah, he would be.

And so one at the 30 at the 40 level.

Excuse me, over 6 furlongs at Santa Anita under Juan Hernandez

back in October. I'm expecting a similar return

to form there here, second off the bench.

I thought he looked really good last time, too.

No one was catching Beef Winslow that day, which is reminder, a

great name for a horse. And and so I just I think he

fits in this level really, really well.

I'll go to the seven next and that is Code Duelo, another

horse that you and I have talked about a fair amount on this show

as well. One over the six furlongs last

time at the 25 level here at Santa Anita.

And that was only the first turf run since December of 24 for

this horse, who's largely been living at Los Alamitos since

then, but gets back on the turf last night for Craig Doloz and

goes out and runs off the page under Hector Barrios, with whom

he has won two of his last three mounts, including this one.

And so interested to see this one stay on the turf because I,

I think they they got back to what this horse is good at,

where he wins a third of his races on the turf, but he's also

won half his races on the dirt. This is just a horse that that

runs all over the place, man. And and it's, you know, he

doesn't get credit for a lot of them because he's running in

like that mixed company kind of race over there at Los Alamitos.

But man, he's he's just a winner.

I love Co duelo in this spot. So I'll go a little different

than Barry by a little, I mean a lot. 372 Barry Witt 62 and 11.

We both have the two in our handicapping.

So let's let's hope it's not Central Dispatch because that's

boring till Barry's right or something with Pioneer Prince.

Or something or something. Something large.

It's something different than that.

That's exactly right. But man, I mean that that's the

race I think one of them buried that really showcases why this

is just such a fun, fun card there on Saturday.

Let's move on to the late Pick 5 starts in Race 6 and this is

one near Barry and I go first on the even races, which is a

choice you and I very different on this race, which I really

liked when I saw our notes right before I sat down.

But I went with the favorite here in bow tie boys who I

thought looked really good last time had a waved claim.

So Tim Yakking got bailed out last time someone tried to buy

this horse last time. He's been favored in four of his

last six races and hasn't won any of them.

So I'm hoping here I won one of them, I should say at the maiden

20 level at Santa Anita. It's a horse that's finished

second five times. I'm really hoping the switch to

Kazushi Kimura pushes this one through the line at a little bit

better a little bit better and and and ends up winning here.

Armando Yuza was aboard last time horse got rundown by teeing

off and so just hopeful that we'll get over the the finish

line here. I'm sure Barry will tell you why

that's a terrible pick in just a second.

Grand Easton will break from the inside.

Go on the mile here. This one I think is just a class

fit Barry. It was competitive last time for

part of the race before falling out of a $25,000 claimer gets

back to 16 here. I think that drop makes a lot of

sense. Broker maiden his main, excuse

me, at the 12 five level. And so this is more where this

horse needs to be living. I think Abel Escono for Isidro

Tamayo and again we talk about guys, this is what they do.

This is what Isidro Tamayo does when races at this level.

And then finally in my handicapping here, I went to the

three horse in Irish element, Emma Seal Haramiyo rides here in

Boyberry. He moved West and people

discovered him quick, didn't. He's having a nice time out

there. Man, Oh man, did he and Doug

O'Neill very good in a maiden 20 last time.

Doug went ahead and threw this one in a clamor.

No maiden company here, just straight up in this one for me.

I'll go with it. I will follow along here.

So Irish element in third spot for me.

Barry, where'd you land in recess?

I landed on the 8. Can you hear me knocking with

the idea that there really isn't much speed in this race?

And in fact, I, I don't really think bow Tie Boys wants to

lead. I think they were kind of gifted

it last time and didn't really want it.

And, and that explains the, the, the defeat at $1.30 on the

dollar. That's tough.

But. If you look at that horses races

from last February, that maiden win, you'll see that the horse

was in maiden special weight dropped and immediately saw

results. Then they stretched out and the

horse won. Then something went amiss and

then here we are. You know, they they ran one more

race in April, didn't, didn't fire at all and ends up in the

spot where Dan Blacker does a really good job with horses off

these kind of layoffs, long, long layoffs and they get into a

race where there's really not much going on.

I mean, there's horses that don't want any part of the lead.

I'm under the impression that Frenchie should go right to the

front. I agree and never look back.

That would be the play here by far because if they're the

controlling space, the pace, and they get to the front early, I

don't think they lose this race. 6 to one I'm willing to take.

I doubt we'll get that. I'd probably say we'll probably

get 4 to one, OK, 9:00 to 2:00-ish, but I'm OK with that

all. Right.

Yeah, that Maiden 32 run would indicate that that horse could

do exactly what you just said Floral Giroux should do when he

gets aboard. What do you like about the seven

horse here? And Uncle Evco, do you have an

Uncle Evo? Was another one.

I do not. I wish I did, but what would

EVCO be short for? That's it's a fair question

there, Barry Spears. It's a really, really fair

question. I'll work on that while you

describe why you think you can win.

Yeah, well, you know, this horse was OK on the dirt and they ran

a nice race at Santa Anita January this year, 16th, and

that race kind of stacks up with everybody else here.

They went on the turf. Clearly this horse doesn't want

any part of the turf. They go back to the dirt.

I think they might be able to get a good run behind the speed,

whoever that may be. Hopefully it's the eight and we

hit this exacticole. Uncle Evco, of course, a son of

Smiling Tiger, bred in Kentucky. And then Smiling Tizzy, you have

third spot here. Kyle Frey picks up for Jose

Valdez again. Been on this horse for quite a

while. Broke his main at the 30 level

at Los Alamitos. What do you make of him in this

spot? I think that the drop in class

makes sense. The last run they were kind of

wide the whole way. Should get a better trip.

Hopefully, you know, this horse really just doesn't like to

finish races off, but hopefully they can get in the picture.

And then we hit the Try Cold 876.

This is for Phillies and Mares 4 and up here, Barry, that haven't

won a great at stake since August of 2025.

So this is kind of the the best of the rest group except that

man I, I this is this is a fun, fun field again, Barry, And it's

just one of those races. I think that makes this card so

darn fun this weekend. Where'd you land in the wishing

moment? Yeah, this, this is a tough,

tough race. I mean, you have a question

mark, complete question mark in the four Saratoga Special.

Don't really know what you're going to get there.

Gratefully was in good form, comes back in good form.

You have jungle piece who has a lot of speed so you can got

everything that you want as far as a horse player in every angle

possible. But I landed on the three.

I'm about to go at 12 to one morning line.

I think they figured out how to ride this horse in these kind of

races. 2 back or actually 3 back.

So back in October, October 25th to be exact, 2025, they ran in a

restricted. Race.

Well, it was those the ratings handicaps.

Yeah, the rating, right. And they didn't fare so well in

that event. Then they went on the shelf

until January 8th of this year and you'll see the difference in

running style. They kind of came off the pace

behind gratefully didn't get the best of trips, didn't get it

room out and you know, just just kind of caught traffic.

Then after that comes out of that race and wins from coming

off the pace. I and and honestly, you'll see

that Marco Demero goes to the two who I wouldn't discount in

this race at all. But I think they figured that

out how to ride this horse. Demero going to the Mandela

horse really doesn't. You know, that doesn't sway me

either way because he has been riding for both of these barns,

so he had to pick one there's, you know, out of.

Evil. And that's a mount that got

abandoned by Juan Hernandez, so it's not like he took some some

bum out, right? Right, it's not you know, it's

nothing that would be that would raise a whole bunch of red flags

and be like, Oh well, he's leaving this horse because he's

no good. I think he's just, you know,

looking for future considerations.

But I think I'm about to go is probably sitting on a good trip

here. Like I said, jungle piece has a

lot of speed and should be out there winging it.

There's a enough pace in here for this horse to get a good

trip and I think the three slot is good.

They can sit kind of right behind the pace and and and get

first run and I think that might be all the difference.

You and I went to two similar horses in our top three in the 8

and the six. I have the six on top here and

that is the favorite. And gratefully, Floral Giroux

picked something out here. Little bit I4 for four lifetime

2 on races. Take it off the turf, one at

Saratoga, one at Aqueduct, and then the horse comes back on the

turf for the first time. Dylan Davis gets the win there,

comes out West for the Falcone barn and goes ahead and wins

under Umberto Rispoli by a billion.

Easy, easy to go against this horse here, Barry, if you think

that Lasix is going to make a big difference, right?

There's always a chance that that's the case.

I think I've seen enough from this horse to know that if

you're going to win in the mud at Saratoga, in the Excuse Me in

the Slap at Saratoga, the mud at Aqueduct, the Turf at Aqueduct

and then the turf at Santa Anita, I'm going to go ahead and

trust that form in this spot. So I will put gratefully on top

in the Wishing Well. I'll go to the 9 next, not

because it's 69, but because I think it has the second best

chance to win in Jungle Piece. Antonio Fraser rides for Phil

d'amato and this is one we saw in the Maddie down at at Del Mar

last time in October. I think that was we were there

for that 1 I think. Yes.

We were Halloween day, I think, and but before that, this one

was at Kentucky Downs, before that in the San Clemente.

You have to really go back to find this horse sprinting at six

furlongs. And so if you look at what

they've been trying to do with this horse, Barry, is those five

and four furlong workouts on the Tepita at Santa Anita to really

try to get this horse geared up. A flying one the other day at 59

and one backing up another 59 and one that was a bullet the

day that that happened. I think jungle piece here,

Antonio Fraser, who has been riding well, should give Phil

d'amato a real shot here in this one as well.

Horses all turf up and down in the breeding and I think fits in

here. I think she does really, really

well in the wishing well in this spot.

We both have the eight in our handicapping.

But, and so I'm going to let you talk about Egyptian Mile, the

South African breeder. Yeah, I, I think this horse has

some upside. You know, ran good and, and

early on, once they moved to the States, this hadn't got the best

kind of luck. And I think it's mostly because

of the running style. This horse does like to close

from from kind of out of it. I don't particularly think that

the flat 6 furlongs is, is better for this source.

I'd rather see this horse down the hill, but here we are.

They're still fast and I think they'll be coming late.

Yeah, the Del Mar 5 furloughs behind Navy Bell who's also in

this field. If that race is 5 1/2 more sense

of winning it. So it's I'm with you.

I I think I think Egyptian ball makes a fair amount of sense in

here. This is 1 as well, Barry.

That was only going right-handed overseas.

And I know that, you know, lots of people don't care about that.

I happen to in look, I'll pull I'll pull receipts here because

it happened in Southern California.

It's why I liked ethical Diamond 2 left-handed races right before

he came over. He was good at both, added to

the formula for me wanting to bet on that horse.

So there you go. I do think the left-handed thing

matters. I think getting to the US and

having to do that a couple of times made a lot of sense as

well. What do you make of Navy Melon

here? You know, is this just too far?

Is 6 furlongs actually just too far?

I think so because they they were two weird things.

This horse's running style, you know, they were coming off the

pace, they were on the lead. I don't, I don't really know

where they fit here. You know, you you would think

this horse does have the talent and they do to win a race like

this, but how is the question I I don't really know what sort of

running style to employ. To me it looks like they might

need a pace meltdown in order for this to actually happen for.

Yeah, fascinating stuff. Was in the Las Nagas last time

out there down the hill at Santa Anita, not available this

weekend, and so we'll be running in the wishing well over the

flat ground there. Late Pick 3 kicks off in Race 8

This is for state bred and it's $35,000 in the purse.

Berry Race 8 means I'll go ahead and go first.

The 8 horse in Race 8 is my play here.

Third time starter in Twisted Humor who's been running first

at the 20,000 level in something that I know not everybody loves

but ran well so they moved the horse up and I thought showed

really well in 50 and should do just fine at this level.

Once again has been working I think well enough.

Keeps Edmund Maldonado in this spot, so I think Jeff Bondi can

get off the schneid with this one in the spot here.

Twisted humor on top for me. 8-9 and five.

California Cat first timer on the outside for Edward Freeman.

One run or one winner, I should say. 4 starts this year. 8

winners last year. How about that?

But only 46 starters. So it does win at a good clip if

the San Luis Rey works mean anything.

California Cat got a real shot here, let's put it that way.

So. But this is also where Ed

Friedman lives. He's 29% maiden claimers.

He debuts his horses here and that last workout was an obvious

attempt to really get some speed into this horse.

By far the fastest work at San Luis Rey over 4 furlongs that

day. Excited to see this one get out

on the track. 8-9 and five for me.

The five horse in here is Shady Stripes.

Ron says gets them out here. One for his 35 to start the meet

here. Barry with 9 third place

finishes. That is when you know you

probably are riding the third best horse in a lot of races and

so he'll be aboard the third best horse in this race in my

opinion. And Shady Stripes, who he has

been aboard the last two times, horse hasn't made a mass of

himself at all. He's run third both of those

races. He's just not as good as the

other horses at this level. He's probably a maiden 20 kind

of horse, Barry, maiden 32, something like that.

So I'll put Shady Stripes in the third spot, 895 for me.

I know you went to a different direction.

The seven horse here in Meridian May caught your eye.

Well, maybe Shady Stripes isn't an ass, but he could be a zebra.

Ouch. That's a Stripe joke.

Bad joke, but I went I went to the 7 Meridian May and do.

You know what you just did, Barry?

Do you know what you just did? This is what you just did.

It's terrible. You ever, you ever have to admit

that one of your own, your own flatulence is terrible.

Like, even like if you're offended by your own fart, just

how bad the fart is, you were so offended by your own joke that

you had to, like, point out how bad the joke was.

Yeah, that's exactly right. You're like, you know what?

That one's on me. I'm Barry Spears.

That one's on me. That's that's on me.

Yeah, I'll take full responsibility for that.

Department, that's exactly right.

What do you like about the seven-year?

Well, you know, it's the idea that this pace in this race is

going to get hot. Like you said, California cat.

If those works mean anything, the source is going to be fast.

Out of the gate. Twisted humor is fast.

You could even say the four voices of autism will probably

try to go to the engine. Even the one little Tessa

blinkers on bullet workout on Valentine's Day.

Maybe even Lindy's dream. So you get that kind of line up

and you might get a race that gets hot up front.

And I think Meridian may might be the horse that benefits a lot

from that. I know they started this horse

on the dirt, which they probably should have, but I think they

just ran on that turf race just to get another race into this

horse, not for the chance that they were thinking they they

were going to win it. I mean they drew the 9 hole.

It kind of looked like they were just out there for the for the

exercise gets into a way better spot on a slight stretch out.

Well, not even slight stretch out.

It's not a stretch out, but I think that their running style

will actually benefit. And the horses that they ran

against, you'll see. I can't even pronounce the

French name there. Who finished second, came out of

that race to win and good golly, Tis Molly came out of the first

race and won. So I I think the company lines

are there, the running style's there, the race shape is there.

I like the seven quite a bit. Mike piping of course two for

his last seven, made special way to maiden claimer, which is what

he'll be doing here and goes turf to dirt right at about 10%

and so should be an interesting runner in this spot.

You went 7-8 and six. You agree with me on the 8th,

but the sixth horse I did not talk about in Cammies Grove.

Yeah, the 6th is another one that should benefit from a hot

pace up front. You'll see in that race in

November, they came from off the pace, from the rail after, you

know, starting slowly. If they get any kind of break

here, they should be able to position themselves well for a

nice run, you know, into that hot pace.

But we'll see. I mean, 4 to 1 seems to be a

little bit short for me in this scenario, but it it's going to

be close as to who's going to be higher at post time, the six or

the seven? Barry Spears Lyrubo hanging out

with you late Double starts race. 95 dollar minimum on the

Another one of these races that I think just makes this card.

And this is one of those races. Race 9.

Where'd you Lander? You know, I've been wanting to

bet this horse at this trip for quite a bit actually, since I

saw this horse run at Delmar back on October 30th.

They I thought, should have won that race and just didn't get a

good trip. Tempest Vollit actually got the

better trip and and has proven to be a pretty good turf horse

coming out of that race. Then they went to the lead

inexplicably in that next race and and kind of dumped it and

then ran a better race against a horse that was actually in that

let it ride at Del Mar hiding in Honduras and Tempest Vola and

and again, didn't get a great trip lands here, which I think

is the optimal spot for them. You know, this 50,000 level.

They certainly fit, but I think they're going to get a great

trip off the pace here. I know they're probably going to

be, you know, kind of forward, but kind of mid pack and running

down a horse like burning rubber shouldn't be that hard in a race

like this, considering who they've been running against.

And I think that might play out exactly to a tee.

So we want this 24 cold. While the Crocodile only ever

gone left-handed, including a 7 furlong win in the Winter Series

at Dundalk before coming over, has been very, very good in high

level races, third in both the Oceanside and the Let It Ride.

As Barry pointed out, both of those by less than a length and

frankly was very good in the math is mile last night, which

is a grade 2. So no shame in that one there in

December again, 24 and 10 for Barry in race 9.

I went with a lot of horses here too, Barry.

So I'm going to go ahead and and actually update my my stuff

because I have four horses I want to talk about for this race

and this is I I just Barry. I love this card so damn much.

The five. Let's talk about the five

period. Should we talk about the five

period? Let's talk about the talk.

Let's talk. So Yakalev, you bastard, you

listen to me. You lost a proof.

He rides last time out. And.

You're better than that. I know you're better than that.

I've watched you down the hill. This last time out.

We saw you go back from a mile, you know, peel it back a little

bit. Maybe it didn't work out with

tomorrow and you're 2 miles with him.

Get back to Hector. Do you remember those days?

I do. Oh, I remember the Hector days.

Oh. Man 50 optional over six

furlongs, boom first place. 32 optional over a mile, boom first

place. I remember those days Yaka left.

I remember I was I was there in spirit, but I was there.

And then last time I saw you on the car and I got excited.

I threw some cash down on you, brother, and it was 7 O one.

I'm not mad. Not mad.

But you ran like 7 to 1 and you know what?

Yaka left. You're better than 7 to one.

I've seen it. You're better.

It's time to step it up. It's time to be better.

It's time to trust Hector. Bury us.

You go. 2. Trust your connections.

So I got Yaka left on top. I think he can really go ahead

and win this thing. I went to the 10 horse next

Barry in Amer Amerhall, excuse me, 5 to 2 here should be the

favorite by the time we get there.

I had to pull up last time going down the hill in an optional and

before that though does have experience winning at the

distance. This horse last two times on the

hill one and then second by ahead.

If you take out the last race, of course, was it also won a

Kentucky Downs on the 6 1/2 right?

So not a one to one comparison, but doesn't seem to mind the

undulating hills of different places.

Daughter Palace or son of Palace Miles in here.

I think he's got a real shot as well.

Then went to the 11 horse in De Capo.

This is a Barry Spears special right here.

Look at this horse. Did Del Mar going a mile on the

turf. I'm going to go ahead and just

make that something that I think it happened this weekend because

this is one that won at 6 1/2 at La Salle.

Do it a little bit at the right turn there when you get to that

top of that stretch and then pulled away like crazy in that

one in a maiden special. I I just I'm always interested

in horses that are good at that kind of thing getting down the

hill. What do we do with Ballyvon Gig?

The answer is we have no idea. But this one last out was right

behind Yakalev in that race and I think they might have found

something by accident with this horse.

If you look back at Del Mar, November, beginning of November,

at least Barry in an optional level at the five furlongs just

ran out of gas right at the end. Ran out of gas last time as

well, but tried him in the Stormy Liberal just got part.

Do you remember that race? How much of A blank and finished

that Stormy Liberal was at the end of November was spectacular.

But I I think this is a race where you can get there too.

So 510-1112 for me here. Barry, how about that little pep

talk for Yakovlev? Why not little pep talk?

Should I do a weekly pep talk for a horse?

Is that something we should add as Socal Saturdays or was that a

terrible segment? Oh, I can't hear you at all.

How could your sound go out right now as I just make an ass

of myself talking about Yakovlev?

Terrible. You're a bad person, Barry

Oh, no, it's muted again. We'll move on to the closer

race. Ted, We'll close up the card on

Bury a mile on the turf for Cal, not for Cal brand, excuse me,

for Phillies that are three years old.

Open the the card with three-year old males on the turf

and go with three-year old females on the turf at the end

here. Race 10 means it's my turn to go

first. Barry and landed on the 9 horse

in this one. A second time starter shocking

to everyone watching in daring pursuit.

I'm hoping essentially that I'll get a a sweep of the late double

by Hector Barrios. I would accept that.

That would be very nice. But Derrick pursued here.

We'll try the mile on the turf for the first time stretching

out for Dan Blacker here. This all just seems to make

sense, Barry. I think all of the elements are

here. First start in January, comes

back now gets a little bit more distance.

Keep the jockey. It seemed to work.

Not this time is going to be just fine over two turns.

Warfront on the damn side, all the things.

I think they're in pursuit in the number that six to one makes

a lot of sense in here. So I'll go with the nine horse

on top. Second time starter for Dan

Blacker, the four horse, second in my handicapping in Daria,

First time starter in North America for Phil D'amato who

only wins 1/4 of his fixes doing that.

This is one that went left-handed first time, almost

one frankly on the synthetic at Dundalk.

Should have a real shot here as well.

And then finally, Barry, I went to the six horse here in chairs.

Coin, another Irish bred, was last seen really doing good work

over the turf court, which I think will have some moisture in

it this weekend. Barry probably going to be

listed as good. Jose Ortiz was in town that

time. Antonio Frazier gets them out

here. We're throwing the blinkers on

Barry, which I really appreciate because this was one if it

started any better last time we'd be talking about it in one

of the non twos, right. I mean we just would be and so

if any kind of better start. So I first Lasix blinkers on.

I think that's a really good combination.

I feel pretty sound about these 3946 at the end.

So Barry's going to tell you about 3 very different horses

now. Absolutely.

As far as the last race goes, I'm sure you're going to be

quite in a conundrum if Beef Winslow draws in.

It's going to be bad for me. Hello my horse.

But I, I thought the one channel place looks pretty good in this

spot. They went to lead November 29th

and I think that's the the plan on Saturday with Doug O'Neill

going to harm Mio Drawing the rail only accentuates that along

with the bullet on February 12th.

I don't really see much speed beyond that horse.

And if they get to the front, I, I, I think this horse is faster

than Shane the Shanes of the brains.

And, and beyond that, there's really not much unless somebody

just tries to get a fire and gets out there.

But I don't think that's gonna happen.

I, I think Channel Place might be able to get a fairly easy

lead here and take them all the way at 12:50.

I'll take it. I don't think we're gonna get

12:50, but. 110 and three for Barry in the closer here.

That is I have the wrong race up.

That is channel yours in here. Yeah.

No, I'm sorry about that. Yeah, the 10 horse here in this

spot is your rack. Another one that makes a ton of

sense in here, stretching out for John Sadler.

Yeah, I paid a lot of money for this horse too 950,000.

Well, good point, yeah. And really haven't shown too

much. I I mean the horse does have

potential. I think to stretch out makes a

lot of sense here and getting top riders.

I I think this horse is probably better than most of this field

just off town alone. So we'll keep that one in the

mix. It's in second. 110 and three

last horse we'll talk about today is Araya man did you go to

did you go to a problem with her?

I can't remember. Zoriah will break from the no

OK, nevermind that was a different friend.

Zoriah will break from the three different different bro.

But Michael McCarthy trains here good second timer stretch out I

think makes a lot of sense. This is a look we we talk about

you know, 0900 and 50,000 pro. This is a big boy breeding job.

This is a big boy breeding chart.

Zustar Oasis Dream on the damn side as far as grass horses.

This is a big boy, big boy breeding job.

Well, yeah, they, it seems they they might have bought this

horse privately. So you know, who knows what they

paid for this one? You know Mike McCarthy's horses,

first time, you can usually just put a line through it.

In general, I I think they're better suited.

They got the race under their belt.

The stretch out makes a lot of sense.

This horse probably will be able to turf pretty easily,

especially going longer. Maybe this is too short.

That's the only question mark for me.

Interesting. Yeah.

A reminder Barry and I will be out your way for Big Cap Day

that is beginning of March. We will be out there to visit

you. We'll be out there for Friday's

races as well. If you live a life where you

can't be there on Saturday and and well, actually, if you live

a life where you can go both days, that's what you should do.

But if you live a life where you could be out there on Friday,

boy, that's going to be a lot easier of a day to hang out with

us. So come on on Friday, come see

us 11:00 though Pacific Time on Saturday.

We'll get started at Clockers Corner for our show on Saturday.

So please, please, please come by, come say hi.

Handicap that day. Big cap on that day as well.

We'll have some guests for you as well.

I know I've confirmed Sean Collins, Barry's working on some

folks. I'm working on some folks, but

hey, if you are part of our if you're watching this, you're out

whatever, we would love to just have you as part of this

Mar trip was was obviously, you know, like a an icebreaker for

you for sure. Excitement level for Del Mar was

what? An excitement level to go to

Santa Anita is what? Honestly, I think it's about the

same. It's like I was going to say so

this. Is 30 on a scale one?

So you and I are the same here. And I think you, you, I, I

opened with something that was very personal for me, But I know

that you agree, which is it's going to be nice to be there

when it's not Breeders' Cup actually, right, when it's just,

it's just Santa Anita. Yeah.

I mean, you know, the the one thing about I know about Tampa

is you go there on the Wednesday, you know, the crowd

is is what it is. You know that those are the

horse players. Those you know especially.

Absolutely. Things like that.

That's what I feel like this is gonna be going out to Santa

Anita on big cap day. This is their time to shine.

But it's not the hugest day they have or but it's a very big day

and you'll get all those regulars and kind of a horse

players day. It really is.

So come on out. We'll be out 11:00 start time at

Clockers Corner on Saturday. We'll go as long as we need to

to get that show in. I'll do my radio show from the

press box there. So not available to hang out at

7:00 AM, but the guys will be out there for workouts.

If you want to hang out with Sean, want to hang out with

Barry, watch some horses run around.

If you haven't done the Clockers Corner thing, my goodness.

It's one of the great experiences in North American

racing. So make sure you get out there

and check that out as well. Well, Barry, we did the damn

thing. We will do it again next week.
