All right, it's Episode 2. So Cal Saturdays, hanging out
with Barry Spears. My name's Louis Ribot.
Thanks so much for making us a part of your horse racing
weekend. Heavy, heavy, heavy in the Cal
breads at Santa Anita this weekend, which always means
plenty of opportunity for lots of value as well.
Barry, good evening, man. Rave reviews on episode 1.
How are you, buddy? You got to unmute for me this
week. This week?
You understand what unmute is, yes?
My bad. No do overs.
Yeah, Doing well. You know, I, I was, I was really
excited about last week, you know, first episode and we did a
pretty good job, I thought. I thought we did as well.
Yep. Hopefully the people got
something out of it and we're doing it again.
There you go, we'll get back at it here.

We'll talk about them as the episode goes along, Barry.
But we start like we usually do, by the way, little little tease,
little extra. Ready to give out that try to
hit that cross country pick 5 as well on Saturday.
So there you go. A little little extra, little
extra, get in on that too. So we'll handicap a couple races
at Gulfstream Park to close the show today.
But race 1 is on the turf as it seems to be every Saturday at
Santa Anita's, a state bred race, an allowance optional
claiming $61,000 and the Kitty here, we're going a mile on the
turf course there. Essentially this is a non 2
lifer race, Barry. We've got a big favorite in
America's Mark the one horse. But I'm looking at our notes and
we both are going to try to beat this horse right off the bat.
Yeah, You know, favorites on the rail are just.
I loved seeing that because I love betting guests, horses like
this, you know, recent maiden breaker going long for the first
time, 6:00 to 5:00 on the morning line.
No, thank you. No thanks.
Who did you lay that on instead? I think you've got a little bit
of a price here at least. Yeah, I thought Sunset Grazing
is the horse kind of the beat here, that Golden Gate
Debutante. I think that's what it is.
The GG Debutante was a pretty good race.
I'm not really sure what kind of trip this horse got in that
Santa Anita Cal Cup Oaks, but I do know it wasn't anything to
write home about. The horse did get blocked late.
If you go back and look at that replay and it does set this
horse up. But really why I like this horse
is stepping on the gas. Want this horse to get to the
front. I don't think there's a lot of
humongous speed in here where this pace is going to get really
hot. And I think grazing can sunset
grazing can really, really dictate the pace here.
I know that horse was 60 to one last time, but my goodness.
You're taking six to one with the six horse here.
I'm going to try 9:00 to 2:00 with the two horse here in Chili
Philly. Herrera Yak team combination
here. Similar set of races to what
you're describing for the number six in Sunset Grazing.
But we get Chili Philly here, man, I, I, I always try to do
this, Barry, if I see a 5th place finish, but it's a close
finish. I always want to know what that
blanket look like, how the horse was handling that.
All that kind of stuff gets Lasix here, which I really like
as well. Yak Teen having a really, really
good start to the meet as well. Winning at 17%.
Interested here because if I get 9:00 to 2:00 on this horse bear
that, that feels like really, really good value to kick off
the day in Southern California. Who do you have in the second
spot? I I didn't like Chili Philly.
They're coming out of the same race.
Chili Philly was 40 to one in that race and sunset grazing was
60 to one, but they didn't run like it.
If you look at that, that that replay, they were really kind of
coming hard late and you know, kind of got swallowed up.
The line on sunset grazing doesn't look as flattering.
And I think that's why the morning line is the way it is.
So we'll see how how this comes out.
There you go. A couple of class droppers
there. One of my favorite steaks names
in the country is the Soviet Problem Stakes at locile, of
course, Chili Philly now and alumna of that race this past
year at Los Alamitos. Some maiden 51st date breads
will be Race 2 at Santa Anita. We move on to that one here on
Socal Saturdays. We're presented by
amwageramwager.com. Get that 100% deposit match up
to $150.00 today. We're going 6 furlongs on the
dirt here. Barry, I'll go first here
because I like a long shot here. Long shot in a Nate Hornsfield 6
to one here on a first timer for Jorge Parabot and I know a lot
of people think of him as a locile trainer and do some other
things as well. Man hit it 13% last year is
already offed. What, nine of his first, excuse
me, two of his first nine races at Santa Anita this year.
The reason I'm including this horse is because all of his
numbers in maiden claimers in first starts, etcetera, all
makes sense. The horse has been working on
the Tepeda. But if you go back to when the
horse was working on dirt, the the workouts were lights out.
And so my hope is, and you talk about these break, you know,
these workouts from the gate, February 2nd, really, really
good workout for this one. A daughter of Ronsky in this
case. So to me a real chance at least
to get some incredible value because Barry, I'll be honest, I
don't think she's going to be 6 to one.
I think you'll get 12:50 on this horse by the time we get to the
game. Yeah, that, that sounds about
right. This is another tough race.
I mean. It's all the whole day stuff,
dude. Yeah, it's great.
It really is. I honestly, I, I want to give a
shout out to this card because it's very good and very
difficult. It's it's definitely a challenge
throughout the whole thing. There's full fields.
I mean, I, I think it's, it's really we're going to get some
decent prices and and everybody's going to be happy.
That being said, I ended up going outside with Tapatia Leah
and this horse is a full to a horse named Tapatio Leo who's
very fast and I think this horse is just figuring out a little
bit slower than that one because she's actually showed a lot of
speed and improvement in the last race.
I think that can only continue. This field isn't anything to
write home about. As far as pedigree goes, there
really isn't much to go off of and Tapatia Leah looks like the
horse that has the most upside. The only other horse that I
would give a little mention to would be the four free
nomination, but other than that I'm really not enthused with
many of these. I have the eight in the second
spot. I'll mention buds and suds the
the two horse here. Only reason I want to mention
this horse is because they have slowly climbed the ranks with
this horse, right? So we we started in maiden 20 at
Santa Anita back in October with this horse.
Once the horse did move to Santa Anita, it has slowly risen in
the ranks running into maiden 32 last time.
And so just an interesting 1. I don't know that this horse
will ever get over the edge, but if you are playing an exacta
trifecta, my goodness, throw the two in there 'cause that horse
has seems to have figured out going to get the same amount of
food for an executive. It runs first.
So there you go. Speaking of Tapatio, Tapatio or
Cholula, where does Barry Spears?
Fall, I'm not a hot sauce or spicy food person.
My wife is like the opposite. She's the extreme of that, so I
guess that's why it works. There you go No, that's right,
yin and Yang, folks, it's been around for a long time for a
reason. Tapatio is the proper answer in
that case. Race 3 is the next one.
It is the wishing well. It's the feature for the card
and it is a six furlong Sprint on the turf, $100,000 here for
Phillies and mares 4 and up. This is look, this is a
essentially race for non grated stakes winner since August
Barry. But I I feel like a fun field
here, frankly. Queen Maxima comes in as the
overwhelming morning line favorite three to five out of
allowance company. So we got some other horses not
in that kind of company. I am trying to to nail down if
Flavia Pratt's actually going to be out there for Saturday.
People don't know because the Rebel was supposed to be run on
Saturday. He was supposed to be at
Oaklawn. So he was actually going to ride
Friday at Turfway in the Cincinnati Trophy and then he
was going to go down to Oaklawn. Well, now he's scheduled a ride
at Turfway, then Santa Anita, then Oaklawn.
You'd have to give me a really nice play to be able to pull
that one off. But nonetheless, if he is there
on Saturday, I expect him to be very disruptive as he has been
on the entire beat, winning 1/3 of the freaking races.
Barry, where did you fall in a Race 3 here in the stakes?
I like it. You got a little bit of a long
shot here. By a little bit, I mean a big
long shot. Yeah, I'm going to throw 1
downfield here and take #4 May Ray's girl.
I'd like this horse's efforts on the grass and on the grass only.
I know they're stretching out a little bit here, but that race
at Delmar is probably one of the better races by any horse in
this race, and you're not. It's not going to get the kind
of play that it probably should because of the fact that it was
an allowance race. If it was in the stakes race or
even a lower stakes, you know, ungraded steak, I think this
horse's odds would come down more.
But we're going to play what we we got.
And then in the La Cienegas, this horse really didn't have a
shot, was way out wide. And that that feels way, way,
way tougher than this one. So that being said, we would
want to see Edwin Maldonado step on the gas here.
I don't really. Think was just going to ask you,
do you think they're going to send this horse?
Yeah, he's got to they got to go because you got to out quick the
the inside horse Queens Maxima or queen Maxima, sorry, and I
think this horse is just naturally faster than Arctic
breeze. Stay in scam.
I don't believe wants the lead. They'd rather sit.
So that being said, this horse could get away with possibly
getting away with some easy fractions and you know, be right
there late. Yeah, States came an interesting
one because her experience on the mile track there at Santa
Anita is is good and then she gets into these Sprint races and
she hits the board, but it just doesn't seem like she gets over
the hump in those races. So I just I laid it on Flavia
and Pratt here with long sort of by default here.
I think too, back in the Senorita, you saw what she
really is before that, of course, winning a stakes at this
level in a listed sort of stakes.
And so for me, you know, they tried this horse in the Breeders
Cup Juvenile a couple years back.
Felt good about her running in 2023 in that in that level.
So if I get that level of horse and I can get Flavia Pratt, I'm
not going to get 6 to one. I understand that I'm getting
5:00 to 2:00 or whatever it might be.
By the time we get there, I'll lean there.
I just Barry, I have so much trouble finding the way that
stay in scam wins this race. That's really the most difficult
thing for me to try to figure out is how does this horse flip
the last five races where it's been close but never goes past
anybody? Is it a Frankie Vittori?
Is it that kind of thing? I actually wonder if Stay in
Scam might not try to get the lead in this race.
I think there's a chance that that horse just gets the lead
and goes for it. It has worked only a couple of
times and those are usually in these kinds of sprints, but I I
think Stay in Scam is going to try to get the lead.
I would use the One and the Two here.
And frankly, I don't know how much value you're getting with
the one, except that, as we pointed out, Barry, other parts
of this card like like Race 2 offer incredible opportunities
at long shots and that kind of stuff.
And so maybe you can overcome, you know, Flavian Prada, Juan
Hernandez on the Favorite. I'd feel more comfortable with
staying Scam getting the lead if they were going a mile.
I'm not sure he's quick enough right at the beginning of the
race. You know what I mean to to
actually get the lead here. I mean he is quick don't don't
get me wrong, but I just think the intent on May Ray's girl is
is probably more than what Stan Scam wants to commit to.

So those pesky pick sixes that I try not to play but I love, not
going to lie, I'm one of those guys.
We move on to Santa Anita race 4 for this coming Saturday.
It is another of the state. It's not a state bred, but
folks, this is for part of the program to include Northern
California horses in the Southern California program.
It's an $8000 claimer going a mile on the dirt course for
$17,000 to your 4 year olds and up.
Non winners of a mile do get a little bit of help with some
weight. Barry, good luck.
Wide open one here. Really really fun gambling race.
Absolutely, and these lower level type races are notorious
for this kind of chaos. I mean, this race, they all look
the same other than maybe a two that might end up going to the
lead, but have at it. I I mean, I, I couldn't talk
anybody off anyone in this race maybe other than the seven.
I landed on Tyshawn a little reluctantly only because this
horse has the kind of right running style for the race like
this. I think the drop down will put
this horse more forwardly placed than he's has been and I think
that's the place to be kind of second flight in closing.
Tayshaun still running. We saw him as a three-year old
in the Arkansas Derby. He's now 8 and I hit the board
seven of his nine runs last year.
So he's still out there clopping along, like you said, dropping
out of that 25,000 sort of category.
He was at Del Mar for 20. This is a considerable drop down
for him. I have him second in my
handicapping here. Bury to the four horse, an
impossible task ran at the $10,000 level last time, but
before that did win over this course over the same conditions
at $8000 before. So I, I think this horse has a
serious shot under Edwin Maldonado, who by the way,
terrific start to the meeting out there at Santa Anita,
winning at 19% and peppering the board as well with 25 times
hitting the board in 63 three runs.
So I do think there's some, there's a chance that some, you
know, some other horses to win here.
Would I be stunned at any of them winning?
Probably not. But in this case, we'll try to
lean on a couple of others. I know you think the Seven's
interesting here as well. Yeah, you know, it's upward
mobility. I, I think, can pick up some
pieces here. This horse's dirt form isn't all
that bad and this race again is is is kind of a wild card and
this will probably be kind of a lone closer type situation for
this horse. He's definitely going to be way
back, but the way that these faint hearted types up front
will be, this horse could pass horses and get into this number.
His his sire smiling Tiger. It was a I hate to use the word
plotter because I in horse racing, we know what that means.
It's just a horse. He's it's the same all the time,
right? It's like he runs his pace, he
does his thing and if he's like that man, then yes, absolutely
could pick up the pieces at the end.
Closing the early pick 5 is another state bred maiden
special way going a mile on the turf there $60,000 and this is
for 3-4 and five. You're old.
So we're already seeing 3 year olds have to run against 4 year
olds here. Barry, I'll go first in this
one. I like the two on top here.
Surprised to know when Flavia and Pratt comes to town.
And I rode this horse last time on debut at 6 1/2 furlongs on
the dirt. Obviously, we're switching to
turf here, which Mark Lat does is at a good rate.
Also go Sprint around a 26%. So I'm going to lean on that one
there, Barry. I'm going to trust Flavia and
Pratt to get this horse over the turf of the horse since that
dirt work, or excuse me, search that dirt run has been working
very well in the dirt as well, but gets a spot here in a state
bread race. Where did you land?
I'm landed on on what I believe is the horse I like or I think
is most likely to win on the card and that is number 8 Miles
Finch and I'm going to tell you why so.
That is the purpose of this medium.
I agree. Yes, it's clear to me looking at
this horse's 2, 6 furlong races that this horse wants no part of
the pace of a Sprint race and it was even more evident in the
January 18th race. This horse has to go long, but
this horse will have to show speed going long and I think the
blinkers make all the difference.
Getting JJ, you know, versus Pratt to me is almost a cancel
out and the fact that they attract JJ Hernandez here says a
lot. You know, Pratt leaves and he
slips in it. It says a lot.
But honestly, if you go back and watch those races, this horse
wants to go a mile and everybody else in this race sort of is
kind of iffy. I I mean.
I went through. Pedigree wise they don't look
like they really, you know, no go getters here.
So I, I think this might be a wide open kind of race,
especially with the king of clubs who seemed a little well
meant first out, just didn't do it right.
So I I want that one to prove it to me.
I I think speed of Elon, the one here is really interesting as
well. Frankie Vittori gets them out
here in place of Tyler Bayes was really close.
We'll be slightly off the pace for this one on Saturday.
I'm interested in Speed of Elon at 8:00 to 1:00.
I'm a little surprised, Barry, by that number given how well
the horse ran on debut. I thought, you know, you get
Frankie Vittori to do that. We would not send an 8 to one.
We'll probably send that, I don't know, 4 to one, something
like that. I think if you can get that
horse at 59 to two, something like that, that's a playable,
playable horse in this spot. The one horse on the inside as
well. You like the four horse here as
well. I you're kind of going all over
the place. I like this.
Yeah, I I think this horse might appreciate the stretch out and
the move to turf. Ohm was a decent turf horse in
his own right. Christina's heat has a has a lot
of horses. I mean, there's there's some,
you know, good pedigree back there where this horse and and
his siblings and halves and everybody else kind of likes the
turf. So I would give that one a shot
in here. Those two races at the maiden
$50,000 level weren't all that bad.
Got into a little trouble. I'm I'm I'm going to give that
one a shot. I mean honestly I'm an 84 cold
exact in this race. Oh nice, there you go, love it.
All right, 84 cold exactly for your guy Barry Spears lawyer
beau hanging out with him on Socal Saturdays, of course.

California breads. And we welcome in the claimers
at the 10,000 level. Optional claimer in this spot,
$18,000 purse going a mile again on the dirt Berry and another
one. Boy, this feels pretty wide open
as well. I, I actually had the opposite
view. I, I, I thought this was a 2
horse race between the, between the 8 and the 10.
They they hooked up last time, kind of closing, passing all the
slower rivals and we're ahead apart.
And I think the same thing is going to happen.
And I actually think Crown Magic is going to come out on top
again. But it it really looks like an
instant replay of the January 26th race.
There you go. So that's 8 Crown Magic and 10
Veritas Equitas available to you.
I'll go with the six year JB books.
Like how that horse looked three back at Fresno and an optional
claimer tried up into those allowance ranks at Pleasanton
last out. I get Giovanni Franco here at
9:00 to 2:00. I'll take that all day.
I really wish his percentages were a little better starting
out, but he's trying to win these kinds of races.
And frankly, as you pointed out, Barry, as they card more of
these kinds of races and we see the field sizes going up,
percentages are going to go down, right?
These days of, you know, 30% riders and all these kinds of
things, it is inevitable that they're going to go down.
So I think I think a lot of Giovanni Franco, frankly, and I
think that this horse will be just fine in this kind of
company. A son of Ken Tharos in this
case. You know, it's interesting Barry
too, because this this race starts the late pick 5.
And I was going through it and it's, you know, big field, big
field, big field, big field, all the things.
And with some of the with all the state bred sort of things
going on. I mean just in my handicapping I
have long shots in the second spot, first spot, second spot
alone in my top three of handicapping.
Just within this sequence. Dude, this might pay stacks.
It's got it right. I mean I mean, unless it just
doesn't look like it's it's going to pay peanuts, especially
like what happened last weekend where the prices were a little
down in in the early part of the card.
But I think this this whole card is pretty good.
I. Think.
It prices throughout. I think we will as well.
We move on to race seven Saturday at Santa Anita.
Another state bred maiden special weight going a mile on
the turf again, this one for three-year old Phillies.
We get a nice field of 13 for this one.
God bless you people at Santa Anita for this one.
Sassafran probably going to be the favorite at post time for
Juan Hernandez. Barry, I like a long shot in
this spot. I'll get to him right away.
And that is the 10 in Big whoosh.
Look at this race last time out. Of course we're hearing about
Sassafran from a good third place by half a length behind
Lady Lady Mendelssohn. What if I get 12 to one on a
horse that finished fifth but by one length in a blanket finish
last out and I get the upgrade to Acio Espinosa in the irons
here. Leonard Powell trains and old
school Northern California combination here between these
guys, Of course, the grand, I'll say also Espinoza, of course, is
the answer to the trivia question.
Who won the last race at Golden Gate Fields?
But last out I thought looked really good.
Getting the extra distance. I think needs to stay closer to
the lead this time, but I think as I will be able to do that.
So man, upset of the day for me. 12 to one the 10 big whoosh.
Wow. I'm impressed.
I I do like that race though, that January 23rd race, race
5:00 on that day, I thought guilty of having fun getting the
switch to Frankie probably is the difference maker.
He can really, if, if he really wants to follow Sassafran all
the way around and just take over and, and I'm hoping that's
what his plan is. I, I'm not really too sure how
far Sassafran really wants to go.
I know last time the horse got Lasik's first time and, and took
him a long way, but it was, it was a fairly easy trip and and
didn't last. I, you know, I, I almost was for
certain this horse was going to finish second and didn't.
So I, I like guilty of having fun quite a bit here.
I think. Hello, kiddo, kiddo just missed.
You'll probably get the same trip with the same kind of
result and then your horse. I also like as well the 10 big
whoosh, not swoosh. Hopefully a little swooshin
swooshin past other horses. How about that?
I I would 1021 here man, you and I totally agree on guilty of
having fun. That might be that might be a
fun exacta box hole 210 pay a little bit by the time we get
yeah get there to Saturday for sure.

We'd love to have you over with our friends at Amwager.
Totally available for all of our friends in Southern California.
We move on to Race 8. You.
Know man. These are fun we got we got too
much of A rhythm though Barry I'll tell you what that's the
problem This show should be a lot longer but whatever 6
furlongs on the dirt for a maiden special weight.
This is actually open company here, 3 year old maidens in this
spot. So lots of Kentucky breads and
other things as well. Nice field of nine here as well.
We get tis secure as the five to two unraced favorite for Baffert
and Juan Hernandez, The Baffert Pratt combination actually
coming in second on the morning line at 3:00 to 1.
Barry and I got to I know you, I've known you for a while.
Tell me why you're trying to beat those two.
I just think that, you know, if one of the Bafferts was really,
really like, you know, well meant Derby trail kind of thing,
we would have heard about this horse already.
I know to secure is probably the goods in this spot, but I always
try to look for ways to beat horses like this because, you
know, down the line the source is going to be better than all
of these. Right?
Most likely, yeah. Yeah.
But if there's a time you can get them, it's early.
And you know, even American Pharaoh lost first time out.
In fact, I think it was on that beat that horse, correct.
But this is the time to do it. And I think Kid Dynasty the one
has a great opportunity to do so.
The the horse has some pedigree with some win early types in
there that they're not completely precocious.
But I think this horse should be able to get it done early.
I like the fact that Yak Team has a steady stream of five
furlong works coming into this, and to me that spells a lot of
intention. I think this pace is going to be
fast, and I don't think Frankie wants to to go heads up with
anybody. I think he's going to be
content. Let the horse just get out of
the gate and pick a spot. It's clear, at least from what I
can see, that this horse can run, which is half the battle in
in these kind of things. So Kid Dynasty is where I'm
landing at 8:00 to 1:00. I don't think this horse could
be 8:00 to 1:00, but that's where.
I'm going, I agree with you. I've got him in the second spot
behind Voldemort just 'cause I think I wanted Voldemort on the
top. No, I'm just kidding.
It's actually based on works as well.
You know, with Yak team. It's interesting Barry, 'cause
you know, I just gave 2 Bafferts and a yak team.
You can see the Baffert effect on how he he times his workouts,
how he does those sorts of things, those 5 furlong
workouts, you know, add in a six for a long kind of thing.
We see that almost. Identical to what Stafford does.
Yeah, that's exactly right. So very clear where those come
from for sure. Race 9 is the start of the late
double there of course a $5 double reminder.
Race 8 starts the late pick, 315% take out, three dollar
minimum. Really, really great wager, as
is the late double for 5 bucks. Race 9 is an optional claimer
open company on the downhill turf course, one of my favorite
courses in America. Barry, do you have a favorite
course in America? I love, I love before they
screwed it up, the turf racing at Churchill Downs over a mile
and an eighth was awesome. That course, you had enough time
to run up to, you know, enough of a run up on the on the front
stretch. Then you had the backstretch to
sort it all out. And then of course, a long run
and that long stretch. I love those mile and an eighth
races at Churchill and the downhill turf course might be.
I got to say I'm probably partial.
Everything. It's pretty wild.
I'm partial to the downhill because one of my bigger scores
I've ever had was Bobby's kitten in the British Cup Turf Sprint
and that was down the hill. So I, I gotta say that that
probably is my favorite cuz I have Bobby's kitten everywhere
in my house. But yeah, so, so I guess, I
guess you could say this down the hill is is my favorite
course. It's way up there, you and I
like it. Also eligible in this spot.
We're going down the hill, by the way, to to fill this out.
Optional, optional claimer here, 61,000 in the Kitty here for
four and up, which have never won, blah, blah, blah, blah,
blah, blah, blah. So not 2 lifers essentially at
this level. Barry, you and I both think that
if Noble Reflection draws in, give him the race and this might
be a spot where you go a little skinnier in the late pick 5.
If that horse gets in. If that horse doesn't get in,
this. This is really wide open.
I I mean, the, the favorites don't look all that great.
A lot of these horses are are kind of getting back into this
sort of thing going down the hill because they don't cart too
many races down the hill anymore.
And you get those, you know, flat 6 or 6 1/2 and it's a
totally different race. And usually what I do is I I
disregard all those races completely and just look at the
downhill form if they have. I agree.
I agree. Because it's such a niche.
I mean, just the way the races are run down the hill and the
horses get acclimated to doing that and if they like it, they
repeat it. I mean, I mean, what was that
horse that Mike Smith rode the I think it was a Philly that won
out there, won the Breeders Cup out there.
It was just kind of like a 6 1/2 specialist.
But it'll come to me eventually. But I I think you know, horses
that like 6 1/2 down the hill will always like it.
That being said, I landed on number 11 Tom Horn.
I think this horse has some. Those two grass races were
pretty good, and I think going down the hill will make it even
better in a race that doesn't look like it's going to be
supersonic pace up front. Yeah, I like that a lot
actually. Having Edwin on this horse
almost guarantees you're going to be in the lead, especially
with this horse. And it's a matter of him just,
you know, kind of getting a hold of this horse and maybe even
possibly slowing him down a little bit.
If not, I've seen him do the opposite where they just or
where he just goes and runs them off their feet.
And that could actually happen in this race as well.
So either way they want to play it, I'm good with it and at 8:00
to 1:00 it's almost a no brainer for me.
There you go, that is the 11 horse Tom Horn in this spot.
I like a slightly longer shot here, again mentioning Flavia
and Pratt, but this horse in money makes money.
The four horse here, 6:00 to 1:00 in the morning line for
Mark Clatt. Trainer Mark Clatt.
This horse ran three times last year, never ran worse than
second, and that included runs in January, October and
November. A little bit of time off here.
Love the layoff angle here, 21% and two back.
Like you mentioned, Barry, this horse does have the experience
on the downhill turf course in a maiden race, finishing only half
a length behind Western Ave. who's also in this race and
should probably get a look. 15 to one on Western Ave.
That that's a legit number, yeah.
Yeah, it might be. I mean, this is a really tough
race if you if you take out like, you know, if the AE
doesn't get in, this is a tough race.
It can go a lot of different ways and and you know, the chaos
coming down the hill can can be incredible where you see those
horses dashing down the middle of the track trying to get
there. So it's always fun.
It is always fun we move to the closer before we do that, we
remind you one last time about our friends at am wager get the

Amwager today. All right, so let's get to the
closer. Nothing to talk about here
except that it is the closing race of all of the pick fives a
mile on the turf here. Open company for Phillies and
mares 4 and up, which have never won 21,000 essentially for non 2
lifers in the spot as well. Barry, I'll let you go first
here. I thought an interesting race.
I went with a horse sort of closer to the inside with a
jockey that I've mentioned a lot of times, but I'll let you go
first. Yeah, I got an idea that this
this race might end up being a little crazy.
So I took #7 quick Kate on top, you know, you can throw out that
dirt race on January 23rd. It was just a non factor.
There was only four horses in the race anyway, and it's just a
complete toss. But this horse's grass races
are, are pretty good. And the one off the bench on New
Year's Day, it was excellent. And getting back to that and
Juan Hernandez probably is the best move here.
Seems to be quite a bit of speed for this horse to run into.
I think they're going to get a great trip.
We're going to go with Quick Kate to the hoop.
Quick Kate to the hoop. She's the number seven horse
here in the closing one here. Clubhouse ride on the sire side
of those things, so obviously built for the turf that way.
I went to a different long shot with my handicapping for this
one. Barry.
Included in my handicapping at least is the 8 horse
sophisticate. MM Smith gets the the ride here.
Ran it a mile and an eighth last time.
Gets back to a mile here where the horse has at least had some
success. Hit the board in all three runs.
Has one at Santa Anita before, like I mentioned, over that mile
and an eighth. So I think the 8 is really
interesting here. Should be an include in any of
your exact or trifecta plays. I did lean on Flavian with
Eternal Reign. The two of them already have won
at this distance over this course in a maiden special.
First time trying anything in North America.
Trainer Phil d'amato goes 23% back-to-back with winners and
this is just what he does really, really well.
He and Flavian Pratt are winning at 39% in their last 33 races at
Santa Anita. Give me the two horse in this
spot. It will be nowhere near a four
to one, but I am interested in a four some kind of you know,
involving the 8:00 and then I like Tirupati for Jonathan
Thomas and Kyle Frey here was really good under Kazushi Kimura
last out at the distance in a non 3 lifer gets to drop into
this company. I I don't exactly understand
how, but the source isn't in for the tag gets to drop into this
company. Interesting breeding here.
Barry, daughter of Matoli, I don't think of at all with with
grass. I think of as a sprinter, but
this horse has done some really good work going longer,
including at Woodbine and then eventually, of course, moving
out here off of the mile race. Last out.
I think the five here or excuse me, the six Tirupati.
Why is it hard for me? I don't get it.
Tirupati should be one that you include in your your your wagers
as well. Yeah, it seems like, you know,
they're like you. They were shocked at this horse
being a grass runner going a mile right?
Two turns. I, I mean, look at how they
started that horse out. They were like, yeah, we, we got
a speedy type and turns out it's a mile speed type, not a six
furlong speed type. So right, yeah, no, that horse
would run good. I, I, I couldn't make a case
against that horse. One that I, I will mention is
the 12 Kentucky gal. Yep, I think this horse has some
talent. Probably needs a better trip.
I think Barrios could do that. I'm just not enthusiastic about
the 5:00 to 1:00. And I think that horse is
actually gonna get better a little bit, too.
Another track where you can obviously use the Amwager
platform is Gulfstream and we will see a cross country pick 5
on Saturday. Something Barry and I really
like about it is has a dollar minimum on the wager.
So it it bumps up how much you can spend.
It also stops people from just pushing the all button whenever
they feel like it in other races as well.
Makes them actually have to handicap.
Some of these races we've been talking about it's an all turf
pick 5 and I we won't do this every week Barry, but I thought
just a fun sequence and these races at Gulfstream.
Good luck. Shout out to my buddy rhyming
last name to Louis Rebo, Brian Nadeau sending the lines down
there in Gulfstream Park. We love that guy for sure.
Solid. And I, and I asked him about
this Barry because I can't figure it out.
Saffy Joseph Junior based at Gulfstream.
Best chest hair, man bun combination in the game.
Not close, not close. Like fantastic hair.
OK, even your chest hair. Oh, he's crashing.
Oh, he looks. Oh, he looks great.
Oh oh, looks great. And it's like curly and it
shines in the sun. Oh, it's beautiful.
Yeah. It's.
I hate the guy. Yeah.
And Brian Nadeau's got the best. Yeah.
He's got the best fade and soul patch in the game.
And, like, it's like, what is it about Gulfstream that gives guys
great hair? Rod Nicoletti still dominating,
Right? Like, no, What's going on down
the Gulfstream? Like, what do I got to put my
water here? This is not working out for me.
I think it's it's either, it's either the sulfur or the Cuban
sandwiches, I don't know. OK, you know what?
It might be the pork. It might be that that might be
the answer. Yeah.
Or the mustard. One of the two we go to.
We go to Gulfstream for two races, Races 10 and 12 on the
card there a mile on the turf course for race 10 and optional.
Excuse me an allowance optional claimer $96,000 in the purse
here and this is for fillies and mirrors.
That's I just want to get that part 4 and up in this spot names
that I'm sure a lot of people in our audience do know already.
Barry between a voodoo magic a spinning colors.
I don't know if you've been watching Gulf St. very recently.
Big beautiful went ahead and broke her maiden by a billion
the other day. Where did you land and race 10
at Gulf Street Park. And by the way, good luck.
Yeah, I I took a flyer on the import in the Clemont barn,
Louisa Beret not really enthusiastic about French horses
running on extremely firm turf, but I have to say that usually
when they send these horses over, it's usually established
that you know the. That's what they.
Need firmer ground is what they want and it kind of appears that
way. I mean, this horse at Dovo went
an allowance race a mile and 1/4 and ran pretty good and I think
that level is probably a little better than this.
So this horse should fit. The only thing that would be the
the problematic piece would be the distance, but this horse ran
a mile a few times and and was right there against what I think
would be better horses. So I'm not really sure what
you're going to get it for a price, this horse might be
favored. Because the one voodoo magic
might take some money too, but I'm going to go there.
And and Madame Mischief was the other horse that kind of caught
my eye, has some established form that might be a little bit
better than these. And at 5:00 to 1:00 is is
probably worth including. I have her on top and that horse
hasn't won since the French and Indian War and so I don't like
that's how wide open this race feels to me.
It is a long time, but I do trust Edgar Zayez has never had
a mount on this horse before. She's been really good her last
two out, frankly, both at this level and optional claimers
going a mile in a 16th. Hopefully the mile will suit her
a little bit better in this spot.
But I also wanted to mention the three horse here spinning colors
Ray Lou Gutierrez off to kind of a slow start there this year at
Gulfstream Park. But this horse was right there.
I don't know if people remember this race.
This is the one that the the totes got screwed up and this
became a non wagering event, Barry and it was late December
there a little bit of time off here for this horse runs runs
pretty well when she's got a little bit of that as well see
July at Saratoga. So this horse has good form
previously fur trainer Mark Hennigan.
So I'm hoping that we see a little bit of what we saw last
time she got caught at the at the line by St.
Loot. That's a horse we both like and
so that's not a stunner either. So I think the three horse in
here is a must include as well. Last one we'll talk about today
is last one we'll talk about today is the closer at
Gulfstream Park. A maiden special weight over the
7 1/2 furlong two turn course there on the turf at Gulfstream
Park. Purse $94,000.
This is for three-year olds, but in this case, after taxes comes
in at 2 to one, Barry. And I think that that's a very
reasonable thing to put on that horse offer.
Wesley Ward has been beaten by a neck last two out.
Maybe it's Junior Alvarado that gets his horse over the hump.
What says Barry? Barry says no, does not get over
the hump again. This is the the whole drawing
the rail thing, you know, especially a speed horse.
They they got to go and it's going to be hard for this horse
to keep that kind of pace all the way around, just breaking
the maiden against, you know, or trying to break the maiden.
This horse is going to get a lot of pressure from a lot of crazy,
insane horses that probably don't know how to run.
And when that happens, you got to lean towards some horses that
have run already. And I think the Todd Pletcher
makeover package on Abundance makes a lot of sense here.
I, I, I think the jump up in buyer speed figures from the
seven furlongs to the synthetic mile and the 16th kind of tips
this hand. I know the the post position
isn't ideal, but again, these are these are nutty horses that
are new to the game. Blinkers on Lasik's Edgar Zeiss,
who's who's actually been riding Lights Out for the past two
months. I feel real confident in this
horse, OK? I like the 10.
If the 11 draws in and Edgard for some reason gets that mount,
that's a must watch as well, yeah.
You got a. HuffPost position though, on the
outside there, but that's a kind of horse I think has enough
speed to make it up throughout the other race there.
Go ahead. I'm sorry, but I didn't mean to.
Cut you off. No, no, no, no.
That one is is key. I I was going to mention that if
he, if he does choose one or the other, if that one draws in,
it's definitely worth thinking about.
But I know from yesterday I had a horse that I picked race rains
off the grass and I didn't like the horse.
I like the AE. OK.
One and I jumped off them, so don't do that too often.
Don't do that, people. That's right.
Betting mistakes, they do happen a lot.
Yeah, I'll. Just trust your handicapping
right? Yeah, no, yeah, I usually, I'm
pretty good at sticking with my selections.
I usually don't waver but the off the turf got me and the
whole thing went down in flames. There you go.
So there was races 10 and 12 at Gulfstream Park.
They'll be part of the cross country pick 5 on Saturday, all
turf between Gulfstream and Santa Anita.
Again, if you are in Southern California, so is
amwageramwager.com. Go get signed up today, $150.00
up to that amount. 100% match from the Barry.
Thank you so much, man. I'm sure we'll catch up very
soon on this show, but hopefully a couple more winners tomorrow
and frankly given the cards, couple more long shot winners
tomorrow. How about that?
Yeah, that's what we look for. You know, that's how I play this
game. No chalk zone.
No chalk zone. Well, good night everybody.
